See portsmouth, nh and the isle of shoals on this fun summertime day trip..

Our Day INCLUDES: * Overview of Portsmouth, NH – Settled in 1623, Portsmouth claims to be the nation’s third-oldest city. It served as a focal point on the Eastern seaboard until the late 1800s when rail travel did in the shipping industry. John Paul Jones’ ship The Ranger was built in Portsmouth, and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (which lies across the river in Maine) was established in 1800 as the country’s first Naval shipyard.

* A Great Meal at the Portsmouth Gas Light Company in Downtown Portsmouth! – Welcome to The Grill at the Gas Light. Built in 1837, this building is the former home of the city’s first utility, the Portsmouth Gas Light Co. Over the last 170 years, it has stood the test of time-including Portsmouth’s “Great Fires.” If you look closely on the eastern wall, you can still see original brick charred by the fires. Today the restaurant is appointed with rich textures of wood, brick and copper paying homage to the Gas Light Company’s role in Portsmouth’s storied history. In fact, every week they burn more than a cord of aromatic wood in the brick oven kitchen to prepare their unique wood-fired bistro cuisine. We hope you’ll feel as at home at the Gas Light as we do. Once your lunch is completed take some time to browse the shops and sights within walking distance of the restaurant.

* The Harbor Cruise – Join us aboard the Victorian style M/V Thomas Laighton and experience the fascinating legends of our legendary New Hampshire & Maine Seacoast. Little known but historically crucial, the legendary Isles of Shoals, located 9 miles off our coast, are an intriguing archipelago of 9 islands steeped with history. As we glide through Portsmouth Harbor, we will see a unique working port with tugboats, tankers, the nation’s oldest and active naval yard, the closed castle-like prison- “the Alcatraz of the East”, our quaint Olde Port waterfront, a famous grand resort hotel, 5 historic forts and 3 lighthouses proudly guiding mariners safely through our waters. Our own Isles of Shoals historian will guide us through these same waters for the duration of the trip.

Touring Locations Include: Isle of Shoals Cruise.

Plated Luncheon Meal Choice at the Portsmouth Gas Light Company:

The Great Bay , often too shallow for traditional sailboats, is perfect for a flat-bottomed gundalow to set sail along the serene shores. For 2023, we’ll be back on the Great Bay for August 29-31 and September 8-10. Stay tuned for updates or email us for us updates and ticket availability.

The Cochecho offers quiet passage through the river once used extensively for transporting brick by gundalow. We were happy to join in celebrating Dover NH’s  400th Anniversary as we led a parade on the Cochecoo on June 24, 2023. We sailed the Cochecho previously in 2016 & 2017.

We sailed from Newmarket’s Mill district in 2014 & May 2018 along the Lamprey River .

The  Merrimack River in Newburyport/Amesbury saw a gundalow sailing upriver of the bridges in 2022 and 2019. The Gundalow Piscataqua first sailed the Merrimack in 2017, which was the first time a gundalow sailed there since 1899! We plan to return again around September 2024.

The gundalow has also traveled up the Bellamy River in Dover in the fall of 2017-2019.

Homeschool Sail

Step aboard the Gundalow and head out on the Piscataqua River for an exciting 2 hour sail. While on board, participants will set the sail, steer the vessel, learn to navigate, tow for plankton, and explore the human impact on our watershed.  This educational program is geared towards students ages 7 and up.

Please email [email protected] if you would like to plan a homeschool sailing group for this season!

the Oar House

Harborside dining in beautiful downtown portsmouth nh.

The Oar House is located in Portsmouth's Olde Harbour area, which in the late 1700s and early 1800s was a thriving seaport. In December 1802, 120 buildings burned in Portsmouth's most disastrous fire, including the wooden mercantile structures that occupied the restaurant site. The citizens of Portsmouth rebuilt almost immediately, in the early months of 1803, using brick to eliminate future fire hazards. The buildings on Ceres Street, including the one now occupied by the Oar House, were constructed at this time.

We had dinner here and ordered the stuffed lobster. It was so fresh and delicious. We would recommend it and definitely order it again. On the other hand we ordered the lobster pasta. It was delicious as well...
The lobster roll was generous, service was good, restaurant was clean. In all, a nice experience. AND it had parking !
Ate there over the summer, and it was a great experience. Wife and I had the oysters and lobster. The oysters were some of the best I've ever had. The staff was friendly and efficient. Would highly recommend and look forward to eating here again.
Went here for lunch after a cruise. Our family had a great time. The NY Strip was wonderful. The stuffed maine lobster was fantastic. The clam Chowder was good. We enjoyed ourselves and our server was wonderful...

Jennifer R:

The Oar House is a classic establishment in Portsmouth, NH. We were here for the weekend and wanted a a nice cocktail by the water prior to shopping downtown. I was so happy with the service, food (and prices!!!!) we came back for dinner!
