Do you have to say: Don't write too fast or is don't write too quickly also possible?

If there's a difference here, it's very subtle, and either would be ok in general. "don't write too quickly" may imply the speaker wants the writer to reflect before writing, and "don't write too fast" might refer to the speaker's wanting the writer to slow down his writing speed; but I think this is a little too fine a point to be important, in general.

Maybe "fast" qualifies a movement speed, and "quickly" refers to the shortness of time?

Thanks a lot to all of you! You have found the answer fast ! I would use quickly here but is fast absolutely wrong?

I just think that BE uses "quickly" more often. In AE "fast" is used more.

Fast is an adjective. Quickly is the adverb form of this descriptive word. The 80/20 Style Guide for Professional Quality Business Writing Stephen Kunkel, Ph.D. Do not write too quickly.

I wonder is this almost-hidden dislike of fast something to do with the extensive use of fast as an adverb meaning much else apart from quickly? Oh, I've just seen river's post. Fast is also an adverb - only one of its definitions overlaps with quickly.

A possible rule of thumb: quick relates to time, whereas fast relates to speed. Virtdave might have already said this.

Thomas1

I've heard many times the folloing kind of phrase; "come quick". In this case quick is simply used as an adverb (quickly), even WR dictionary lists it's function as an adverb . Could this be a colloquial usage or it's widespread in formal register too? Would you use "quick" in nurdug's example: don't write too quick ? To me it sounds wrong and weird but I'm not a native.

Quick is an adjective. It appears occasionally as an adverb, but is generally considered ill-educated - although accepted in idioms such as "get-rich-quick" insofar as these idioms are accepted. j0ckser's beetle that is quick in first gear is using one of the very many definitions of quick (adjective), for example (OED): Full of vigour, energy, or activity (now rare); prompt or ready to act; acting, or able to act, with speed or rapidity.

The Slippery Slide

I know this thread dried up a long time ago, but as I've just been wrestling with this question at work, I'll throw my ideas into the ring. It strikes me that 'quick' is used to describe time spans that are/seem shorter than expected. 'Fast' describes physical speed. Adverbial use should follow this pattern too. So I could drive from New York to Connecticut by going all the way around the border of the United States at two hundred kilometers an hour. It would take me a long time, but I would be going fast. Or I could drive straight there, by the shortest route, at five kilometers an hour. I would be going slowly, but arrive more quickly. I could say, "The car was fast, so the journey was quick." So when people say, "Today went really fast," they should be saying 'quickly'.

Harry Batt

I've looked under the table, behind the door and beneath my handbook for writers but failed to find any reference for a grammar rule to explain fast and quick. My lacking grammar rule holds that if it ain't in the book it must be colloquial. I can't see the difference in meaning between fast on the draw and quick on the draw; yet, quick on the draw has the colloquial edge. As it is with a quick drink or a fast drink but quick drink has become the preferred usage. A quick learner is probably as bright as a fast learner but we say that he learned fast as often as quickly. The ideas we get could arrive fast as a flash or quick as a flash and we would choose quick. It is as difficult to use fast as an adverb as it is to use quick. But we would say "He was speeding fast and not speeding quickly."

Many things are not covered in books, and those are the things that it is interesting to speculate about. That's kind of the point of the forum. We don't say 'fast drink' because that would refer to physical speed, and might result in spilling beer down your shirt. We say 'quick drink' because we're in the pub for a relatively short time. We say quick on the draw because the period between reaching for the gun and pulling the trigger is shorter. There are often overlaps, of course. A quick learner is someone who reaches proficiency sooner. A fast learner is someone who performs the process of learning at high speed. Do they amount to the same thing in this case? Maybe. That is why they might be considered interchangeable. But not always.I think your examples fit the pattern I suggested, colloquial or otherwise. And in making my suggestion, I went against my own instinct, which is that 'fast' as an adverb sounds clumsy and uneducated. It may or may not be correct, but I've never felt comfortable with it.

This week's question

What are the differences between 'fast', 'quick' and 'quickly'? - Ruben on YouTube

Answer this

Is 'fastly' the correct adverb from the adjective 'fast'?

Language points

Fast and quick - the similarities

Fast and quick are both adjectives and both mean 'moving or happening at speed'. You can often use either and the meaning is the same.

  • This car is very fast. This car is very quick.
  • The punch was so fast, the boxer didn't see it. The punch was so quick, the boxer didn't see it.

Fast and quickly are adverbs of manner – notice 'fast' not 'fastly'. Again, they mean moving or happening at speed. In many cases you can exchange them.

  • The lightning struck fast. The lightning struck quickly.
  • He punched me so fast, I didn't see it! He punched me so quickly, I didn't see it!

The differences

Quick can mean 'happening over a short time' or 'finishing quickly'.

  • Let's have a quick meeting. Can I have a quick word?
  • After only a quick glance, her quick thinking came up with a solution.

Quick can also mean 'intelligent' or 'understanding quickly'.

  • He's very quick. Show him something once and he's got it.

Fast  can be a noun meaning 'a period of not eating'. It can also refer to something that is ahead of time, such as a watch.

  • Is it time to stop fasting? I'm not sure because my watch is fast.

Collocations and fixed phrases

  • In quick succession means coming speedily one after another.
  • Cut someone to the quick means hurt their feelings greatly.
  • Play fast and loose with somebody or something  means treat something / someone without care.
  • Hold fast  means remain firmly where you are or keep the same opinion.

No, we do not use 'fastly'. 'Fast' is both an adjective and an adverb.

Word Choice: Quick vs. Fast

3-minute read

  • 10th June 2019

Whoosh! Zoom! Wheee! We have a need for speed today, so we’re focusing on the words ‘quick’ and ‘fast’. Both terms are related to rapidity, but there is a subtle difference between them many people overlook. So join us for a speedy look at how to use these words correctly .

Quick (Speedily or in a Short Time)

We can use the adjective ‘quick’ to refer to something that happens at speed or in a short amount of time. The key in both cases is that ‘quick’ implies brevity of action. For instance:

John was always quick to respond.

I’ll give your essay a quick look before you hand it in.

These uses are similar, but the second doesn’t necessarily require speed. You could have a ‘quick nap’, for example, which would be short but static.

The adverbial form of this word is ‘quickly’. For example, we might say:

She moved quickly to catch the falling vase.

Many people now also use ‘quick’ as an adverb. This is fine in everyday conversation as long as you are clear about your meaning. But you should always use ‘quick’ with nouns and ‘quickly’ with verbs in formal writing.

Fast (At High Speed)

‘Fast’ is another adjective that we use when something happens at speed. This can be a movement, a reaction, or the rate at which something happens, such as a process. For instance, we could use it as follows:

Sherry was faster to respond than Tim.

The fast pace of change took some by surprise.

In these cases, then, ‘fast’ and ‘quick’ are largely interchangeable.

Find this useful?

The main difference between these words is that ‘fast’ does not always imply that something takes a short amount of time. For instance, we can also use it to describe something that can move quickly for long periods:

I’ve always loved fast cars.

In this case, ‘fast’ refers to the potential for  sustained speed. It would be unusual to say that a car is ‘quick’ (although a journey in a car could be quick).

One exception to this general rule is ‘fast food’ , which is so called because it is made quickly. It does not, however, move fast unless you throw it across the room, which is widely considered impolite.

If anything, eating fast food will probably slow you down.

On top of this, we can use ‘fast’ as an adverb when describing an action:

You always drive too fast .

Here, again, the emphasis is on sustained speed more than brevity of action.

Finally, ‘fast’ has some other meanings unrelated to speed, such as ‘hard to move’ or ‘abstain from food’ . However, these are harder to confuse with the word ‘quick’, so it should be easy to avoid errors.

Summary: Quick or Fast?

These words are often interchangeable when referring to something that happens at speed. But ‘quick’ and ‘fast’ also have some distinct uses:

  • Quick usually implies brevity (i.e. that something happens in a short time).
  • Fast does not necessarily imply brevity (i.e. something can be ‘fast’ and occur over a long period). In addition, ‘fast’ can imply a capacity for speed (e.g. we might identify something as a ‘fast car’ even when it is not moving).

So, for example, we offer a fast proofreading service. This refers to the rate at which we work, even if it may still take a while to finish checking a longer document. But if someone offers to give your document a quick look, this usually implies spending only a short time checking it.

  • Setting Goals

Creating a Nutrition Plan

Meal planning, physical activity, hydration and sleep, tracking progress, coping with challenges.

Healthy weight loss plans include eating well, being physically active, and getting enough sleep so you feel your best now and for the long term. Health is about more than a number on the scale, so this weight loss advice looks at the bigger picture.

There are no quick fixes or fad diets that are known to sustain weight loss in the long term. These weight loss plans and fad diets are based on restricting calories or removing specific food groups. Most of the time, it's impossible to follow these plans in the long term, so weight loss is not maintained over time. That's why this article offers sensible nutrition, exercise, and sleep goals, that can be sustained for life. A healthy lifestyle can help you feel your best now while preventing chronic diseases in the future.

Instead of going "on a diet" which you eventually go "off," this sustainable plan includes realistic goals and small changes that can last a lifetime. It also includes a variety of delicious and nutritious foods, as well as exercise that's fun and enjoyable, and tips on healthy sleep.

Setting Realistic Goals

First, decide if weight loss is the right strategy for your health. It's common to have an unrealistic view of what a healthy weight really is. Use this guide to determine what your ideal weight is so you can set an appropriate goal.

If you need to lose weight, aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week (or 4 to 8 pounds in 30 days). People who lose weight slowly and gradually are more likely to keep the weight off long term compared to those who lose a lot of weight very quickly.

Set SMART goals that are:

  • M easurable
  • A ttainable
  • Ti me-bound

A goal such as "I will lose 10 pounds" is not time-bound (no timeline is set) and may not be attainable, since weight fluctuates based on many factors, such as hydration, hormones, medications, food intake, and activity level.

A SMART goal that contributes to weight loss may be: "I will replace my daily can of sugar-containing soda with water for the next 30 days." It's more important to set goals about sustaining a healthy lifestyle than about reaching a target number on a scale. The goal of reducing sugary drinks is more realistic than "I will lose 10 pounds," which is harder to control or achieve.

Eating well plays an important role in weight loss and maintenance. A winning strategy for weight loss includes both caloric restriction and adequate exercise. While calories are part of weight control, it's too narrow to think that energy-in and energy-out is the only factor to consider in weight loss. These factors are also involved:

  • Medical conditions
  • Physical activity levels
  • Medications
  • Environment
  • Mental health

Your best bet is to work with a health care professional for a personalized weight loss plan. If that is not possible, you can follow the general information in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans about the role of nutrition in weight loss. It recommends a varied diet that includes:

  • Vegetables and fruit
  • Grains (including whole grains)
  • Protein foods

The amount (portion) of food that you should eat is specific to your current weight and your weight loss goals. Learn more about how to set calorie goals here . Even if you cut back on calories, it is important to eat a variety of foods to get all of the protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals that your body requires. It's also vital to focus on aspects beyond food. Physical activity, hydration, sleep, and other components are all interconnected in your weight loss journey.

Your body requires nutrients every day so it functions properly. The Dietary Guidelines were designed to ensure that nutrient needs are met with a variety of foods including vegetables, fruit, protein, and grains. You can plan meals using the five food groups in the USDA's My Plate model. When you plan meals, consider these plate proportions:

  • Make half your plate vegetables and fruits.
  • Make a quarter of your plate grains. Choose whole grains at least half of the time.
  • Make a quarter of your plate protein from foods such as poultry, fish, eggs, meat, legumes, nuts and seeds.
  • Have a serving of calcium-rich foods such as milk, soy beverage, or yogurt.

The exact amount of food you will need depends on your goals (see section above). In addition to eating more whole foods like vegetables, you can also cut back on heavily processed foods like fast food, packaged snacks, baked goods, and candy.

A simple meal plan may look like this. You can repeat this 5-day plan 6 times to complete a 30-day plan.

  • Breakfast : Plain Greek yogurt with strawberries and low-sugar (3 grams of sugar or less per serving), oat-based granola
  • Snack : Almonds and grapes
  • Lunch : Tuna melt sandwich with cheese and tomatoes on whole grain bread, served with carrots, red peppers, and an apple on the side

It's easier to stay on a meal plan if you grocery shop and plan in advance. Learn tips for meal planning here .

Being physically active is associated with weight loss because exercise it burns calories. The CDC suggests 150 minutes per week of physical activity for health benefits. However, this amount may not be enough for weight loss. International guidelines recommend 300 minutes of exercise per week for people trying to lose weight.

Nutrition and exercise are both important factors in weight loss. Studies show that exercise only—without dietary changes — may help with a small amount of weight loss, but is not likely to result in meaningful weight loss. Diet and exercise are both important and should be paired together for the best results.

It's important to choose physical activities that you enjoy so you are more likely to stick to them for the long term. Choose a combination of both aerobic (biking, walking, dancing) and strength-building activities (weight lifting, resistance bands, push-ups) for the best benefits.

As a beginner, start by taking a walk every day and lifting light weights. Walk for longer and do more reps with your weights as the weeks go by. Consider these exercise tips for beginners .

Other factors that affect weight include hydration and sleep. When it comes to fluid and hydration, many Americans rely on sugar-sweetened beverages. However, excess intake of sweet beverages is linked to weight gain.

Water is a better choice than sweet beverages when trying to manage weight since it contains no calories or sugar. Replacing sugary or calorie-rich beverages with water can help with weight loss. Some studies indicate that drinking water before meals may decrease food intake during meals, which may help eaters feel more satisfied with fewer calories. Staying hydrated is important because studies show that consistently being under-hydrated is associated with increased body weight.

Studies also show a connection between sleep patterns and weight. Poor sleep is linked to increased calorie intake, mostly from snacks that are high in fat and refined carbohydrates. Poor sleep also may affect hormones involved in weight, appetite regulation, and metabolism.

Some evidence suggests that people who sleep less than seven hours per night are more likely to have obesity. If you don't sleep for at least seven hours per night, consider working with a sleep specialist as part of your weight loss program. Here are some tips to help with better sleep .

If you set measurable goals, it's easier to track your progress. For example, if your goal was to drink water instead of soda at lunch for 30 days, you can mark each day on a calendar to check your progress.

Some people like to keep a food or exercise journal to monitor progress or use a mobile app to count calories or steps. Make sure to celebrate your successes. If you falter, start again as soon as possible.

One caution for tracking progress: try not to gauge your progress based on a number on the scale. Making lifestyle changes such as improving your eating habits or being more active has so many benefits beyond weight control.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recognize that losing weight is not easy and is best achieved with a commitment to lifestyle change over the long term and with the help of medical professionals.

You will have a better chance of sustaining long-term weight loss if you make slow, steady progress that includes a combination of nutrition, fitness, sleep, and hydration changes.

In order to see real progress, don't make too many changes at once. Build up slowly instead. Perhaps the first 30 days of the journey may have progress such as:

  • In the first week, you drink water instead of a soda at lunch.
  • In the second week, you have water instead of soda and walk 10 minutes per day.
  • In the third week, you continue the first two activities and add weight training twice a week.

Remember, 30 days is just the start of this journey. Maintaining these new habits lifelong is how you will see real progress.

Staggering action sequences can't help 'dune: part two' sustain a sense of awe.

Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya are Paul Atreides and Chani in Dune: Part Two.

Dune: Part Two picks up right where Dune: Part One left off. It's still the year 10191, and we're back on Arrakis, a remote desert planet with vast reserves of spice, the most coveted substance in the universe.

The villains of House Harkonnen have regained control of Arrakis after defeating the benevolent leaders of House Atreides. But hope survives in the form of the young hero Paul Atreides, who has fled into the desert. Paul is played again by Timothée Chalamet, whose performance has matured alongside the character: Paul still has his boyish vulnerability, but now he may be tasked with leading a revolution.

Paul has taken refuge among the Bedouin-like nomads known as the Fremen, many of whom believe he is a messiah-like figure who, according to prophecy, will help them defeat their Harkonnen oppressors. To be accepted by the Fremen, Paul must learn their ways and pass the ultimate test by riding one of the deadly giant sandworms that continually roam the desert.

Movie Interviews

Storyboarding 'dune' since he was 13, denis villeneuve is 'still pinching' himself.

Paul successfully rides the worm, and it's the movie's single most thrilling sequence — one of those rare moments when you can feel the director Denis Villeneuve flexing every blockbuster muscle in his body.

With its heightened life-or-death stakes and sometimes staggering large-scale action sequences, Dune: Part Two is certainly a more exciting and eventful journey than Dune: Part One. But even here, the high points are over too soon, and the movie quickly moves on. Villeneuve is an impressive builder of sci-fi worlds, but his storytelling is too mechanical to sustain a real sense of awe.

Admittedly, there is a ton of plot to get through in Frank Herbert's original 1965 novel, a dense saga of feudal warfare and environmental decay. Paul leads a mighty Fremen insurgency against the Harkonnens, destroying their troops and disrupting their spice-mining operations.

Paul also occasionally clashes with his noble mother, Lady Jessica, who ushers in some of the movie's more mind-bending sequences: trippy hallucinations, spooky religious rituals, and a subplot involving a telepathic fetus that reminded me of the Star Child from 2001 .

Sci-Fi epic 'Dune' is an immersive but incomplete experience

Sci-Fi epic 'Dune' is an immersive but incomplete experience

Lady Jessica is played by the formidable Rebecca Ferguson, who keeps you guessing about her character's motives as she urges Paul to embrace his divine calling. But she gets fierce pushback from a Fremen warrior, Chani, with whom Paul has fallen in love. Chani, played by a terrific Zendaya, rejects the prophecy entirely and urges Paul not to buy into it.

Eventually Paul comes to the cynical realization that it doesn't matter if he's a messiah or not, so long as his followers believe he is. Villeneuve, who co-wrote the script with Jon Spaihts, shrewdly calls Paul's heroism into question, and in doing so, pushes back against the common accusation that Dune is just another white-savior fantasy.

That said, the movie isn't as adept at handling the various influences that Herbert wove into the novel, which draws heavily on Arab culture and Muslim beliefs. As such, it's hard to watch the movie and not think about current conflicts in the Middle East — and wonder if it will have anything trenchant or meaningful to say about them. That's a lot to ask of even the smartest, gutsiest blockbuster, but Dune: Part Two doesn't rise to the occasion: It ultimately treats politics as superficially as it treats everything else.

For all Villeneuve's astounding craftsmanship, there's a blankness to his filmmaking that I can't get past, even when he's introducing a frightening Harkonnen villain played by Austin Butler, who's utterly unrecognizable here as the star of Elvis .

What this Dune needed was a director with not just a massive budget and an exacting design sense, but a touch of madness in his spirit — someone like David Lynch, who famously directed a much-maligned adaptation of Dune back in 1984. That movie was a flop, but as always, box office only tells part of the story. For sheer grotesque poetry and visionary grandeur, Lynch's film still worms its way into my imagination in a way that this one never will.

The historic stock-market rally has shown few signs of stopping since October — with the S&P 500 advancing in 16 of the last 18 weeks for the first time since 1971 .

There have been only two other scenarios when U.S. stocks climbed this fast over any four-month period since World War II, and the recent rally has “strong parallels” to both, according to a Deutsche Bank analyst.

The first scenario was when the economy was emerging from recession, such as after the COVID-19 pandemic or the 2007-2008 global financial crisis, while the second was during the dot-com bubble era in the late 1990s, when stocks saw rapid gains that proved unsustainable, said Henry Allen, macro strategist at Deutsche Bank.

Post-recession periods

“The last time we saw the S&P 500 advance this rapidly over four months was up to July 2020,” when equities staged a “sharp recovery” after slumping on growing instability due to the onset of the COVID pandemic earlier that year, Allen said in a Monday client note.

The mid-2020 rally was supported by massive amounts of monetary and fiscal stimulus, with the S&P 500 SPX rising 26.6% between April and July, almost taking the index back to its pre-COVID peak, according to FactSet data.

Looking further back, U.S. stocks also rallied after the S&P 500 fell to fresh lows in 2008 following the global financial crisis — with the index gaining more than 25% over the four months that ended in June 2009 once “the most acute phase” of the crisis had passed, according to data compiled by Deutsche Bank.

“Unsurprisingly, recessions normally lead to significant equity selloffs, then when the economy begins to improve again, there’s usually a fast recovery for the stock market,” Allen said.

See: Nasdaq-100 rose 3% for the first time since the dot-com bubble era. Why it brings up old memories of this ‘scary’ period.

The dot-com bubble era

Allen said the seemingly relentless equity rally also brings to mind the dot-com bubble from over two decades ago, which saw the S&P 500 rise by 26% over the four months that ended in July 1997.

The rally later was followed by a bursting of the bubble, with stocks falling for three years in a row from 2000 to 2002.

See: S&P 500’s breadth ‘still narrow’ after record peak — with these four stocks driving February gains

The large-cap benchmark S&P 500 has risen 21.5% since it bottomed in October 2023, spurred on by growing hopes for a soft landing for the U.S. economy, expectations that the Federal Reserve will soon start cutting interest rates and investor enthusiasm for artificial intelligence.

“It’s rare to see a rally this fast, and when they happen it’s usually because the economy is emerging from recession and the stock market has just been through a slump,” Allen said on Monday, adding that the only time in the post-World War II period that this wasn’t the case was during the dot-com bubble era.

Their rarity may raise fears that the recent stock-market rally is also a bubble, Allen noted.

Indeed, market participants have been debating whether the rush over the past year into the so-called Magnificent Seven stocks — a group that includes chip maker Nvidia Corp. NVDA, +3.60% and other megacap technology companies — resembles the dot-com bubble era, a period when equities also rode a wave of tech hype only to come crashing down, triggering a mild recession.

While the Deutsche Bank analyst didn’t draw a direct parallel between the recent stock rally and any of the two prior scenarios of rapid gains, Allen admitted this rally has similarities to them. The U.S. economy also has remained surprising resilient during this cycle, even with the Fed’s policy rate steady at a 22-year high since July.

The three major U.S. stock indexes finished lower on Monday afternoon, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite COMP  retreating from their record highs to start the week, down by 0.1% and 0.4%, respectively. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA dropped 0.3%, according to FactSet data.

Jake Paul vs. Ryan Bourland fight results, highlights: 'The Problem Child' destroys foe for quick TKO

Paul continued his professional boxing journey by battering another 'pro fighter' on saturday night.

For the second consecutive outing, Jake Paul made light work of a "professional boxer." On Saturday night in Puerto Rico, Paul picked Ryan Bourland apart for a first-round TKO. Paul was light on his feet in the opening moments of the fight, firing off jabs that split Bourland's guard. The jabs opened up shots to Bourland's ribs as Bourland tried to chase down Paul to get his own offense rolling. Before Bourland had a chance to get anything going, Paul moved back to the head and landed right hands and left hooks, sending Bourland reeling.

Paul kept his foot on the gas until Bourland began to wilt in the corner, resulting in the referee calling a halt to the bout at the 2:37 mark of Round 1.

"I wanted it to be a little bit longer to give the fans some more time but I'm just so happy to be here in Puerto Rico," Paul said after the fight. "You all showed that love. I love it here. If you're not first, you're last. A little bit of shake and bake. Dodge his punches and put his sorry ass on the floor."

After the fight, Paul made a call for the biggest star in the sport to step up and face him.

"Hey, Canelo. Stop ducking," Paul said. "I know you want it. I'm repping Puerto Rico. You're repping Mexico. So it's Puerto Rico vs. Mexico."

Paul vs. Bourland was the chief support bout for Amanda Serrano's defense of her unified featherweight championship against Nina Meinke. Just prior to the Paul fight, online reports began to circulate saying Serrano would not be fighting due to an eye injury.

The injury was confirmed following Paul's bout, with both Serrano and Paul, who is Serrano's promoter, speaking to the crowd after those in attendance were told they would receive full refunds for their tickets.

"I came ready to fight 100 percent," Serrano said. "I came to show my fans and put on a great show. I can't because I had something wrong with my eye. I had my hair done as you can see. The doctor wouldn't clear me. I wanted to fight. I wanted to fight in front of my people."

Paul backed his fighter with his own comments.

"Amanda put in a hard camp but the doctor wouldn't let her fight," Paul said. "Her cornea was exposed. ... This happened super, super last minute. We did everything we could but her cornea is exposed and you can't risk losing your sight just for one fight."

CBS Sports was with you throughout the entire way on Saturday with the live results and highlights below.

Fight card, results

  • Amanda Serrano (c) vs. Nina Meinke, Unified featherweight titles -- Fight canceled
  • Jake Paul def. Ryan Bourland via first-round TKO
  • Jonathan Gonzalez (c) def. Rene Santiago via unanimous decision
  • Krystal Rosado def. Gloria Munguilla via majority decision

Jake Paul vs. Ryan Bourland -- Round 1:  Paul opened the fight pawing with a few jabs before a left hook missed. Paul did land a hook moments later before popping more jabs. Bourland tried to bull his way in before eating a few shots to the body. Paul continued to mix in those body shots while moving and forcing Bourland to chase. Paul's jab continued to do good work along with getting in some body shots. A right from Paul wobbled Bourland and more follow-up shots had Bourland reeling. Bourland wasn't firing back as Paul continued to land hard shots. Paul connected with an uppercut and more right hands as Bourland was stuck in the corner covering up. Finally, as Bourland began to slump down, the referee jumped in for the stoppage. Light work for Paul. Official result: Jake Paul def. Ryan Bourland via TKO, Round 1

According to an ESPN report, Amanda Serrano's main event fight may be off after something fell in her eye ahead of the fight. Updates are forthcoming.

Jonathan Gonzalez successfully defended his WBO junior flyweight title by unanimous decision over Rene Santiago in a competitive fight. That was the final bout ahead of the first of the night's two big fights. Up next: Jake Paul takes on Ryan Bourland in cruiserweight action. Speaking honestly, this should be light work for Paul.

Wanna Walton, who has had roles in many major shows, including HBO's "Euphoria," Prime's "Utopia," and Netflix's "The Umbrella Academy," but has been boxing since childhood, just had a bit of a setback. Walton, in his second bro bout, went to a majority draw with Joshua Torres, who entered at 0-1-1.

Scores were 39-37 Walton and 38-38 twice.

Hello and welcome to CBS Sports coverage of boxing live from Puerto Rico. It's a fun night on tap with both unified featherweight champion Amanda Serrano and her promoter Jake Paul in action. Serrano is set to defend her trio of titles on home soil for the first time since 2021 when she takes on Germany's Nina Meinke. Paul, meanwhile, takes on the unknown commodity of Ryan Bourland.

There's plenty of other fights set for tonight, with some already ongoing, so be sure to check in all night for our coverage.

Senate leaders likely to seek quick dismissal of Mayorkas impeachment case

WASHINGTON (AP) — For the third time in five years, senators will be sworn in as jurors for an impeachment trial. But the chamber is expected to spend far less time on the charges against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas than the ones brought against former President Donald Trump — or maybe no time at all.

The Republican-controlled House impeached Mayorkas by a single vote margin on Feb. 13, recommending that Mayorkas be removed from office over his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. With two articles of impeachment, the House charge that Mayorkas has “willfully and systematically” refused to enforce existing immigration laws and breached the public trust by lying to Congress and saying the border was secure.

Democrats say the charges amount to a policy dispute, not the “high crimes and misdemeanors” laid out as a bar for impeachment in the Constitution.

The 214-213 vote, a narrowly successful second try after the House had rejected the effort a week earlier, was the first time in nearly 150 years a Cabinet secretary had been impeached. And while the Senate is now obligated to consider the charges, Senate leaders have shown little interest in spending much time on the matter. Two-thirds of the Senate would be needed to convict Mayorkas, and not a single Democrat has signaled support for the impeachment push.

Still, there is a process that senators have to follow under the rules for impeachment, and all Democrats would likely have to stick together to dismiss the charges completely.

A look at next steps and the Senate’s options once the Mayorkas impeachment moves across the Capitol:

CONVENING AN IMPEACHMENT TRIAL

Under impeachment rules, a group of House managers — members who act as prosecutors and are appointed by the speaker — will deliver the impeachment charges by reading the articles on the Senate floor, usually after making a ceremonial walk across the Capitol with the articles in hand.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has not yet said when that will happen, but it could be as soon as this week, when the Senate returns to session after a two-week recess.

Senators will later be sworn in as jurors, likely the next day. The Senate must then issue a summons to the official who is being tried to inform them of the charges and ask for a written answer. But Mayorkas would not have to appear in the Senate at any point.

After that, the rules generally allow the Senate to decide how to proceed. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., hasn’t yet said what he will do, but he is expected to try and dismiss the trial in some manner, if he has the votes. Democrats control the Senate, 51-49.

VOTING TO DISMISS THE CHARGES

If Schumer can muster a simple majority, Democrats could dismiss the trial outright or move to table the two articles, ending the House’s effort and allowing the Senate to move on to other business.

Getting to 51 votes would require every single Democrat and the chamber’s three Independents to vote to dismiss, or potentially fewer if any Republicans join them.

While several GOP senators have questioned the need for a trial, it’s unclear whether any of them would go as far as to vote to dismiss the charges right at the start.

Some Republicans are vocally opposed to that approach. In a letter last week, Utah Sen. Mike Lee said in a letter to Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell that Democrats should not be able to “shirk their Constitutional duty.”

But McConnell has little control over the process. If Democrats stick together and vote, they can dismiss the trial — only a simple majority is required.

In Trump’s second impeachment shortly after the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., raised an objection that the trial was unconstitutional because Trump had already left office, effectively a move to dismiss it. Most Republicans voted in support of Paul’s objection.

REFERRING TO COMMITTEE

If Democrats are not able to dismiss the trial or table the articles, there is a second option: They could follow the precedent of several impeachment trials for federal judges over the last century and hold a vote to create a trial committee that would investigate the charges.

While there are no hard rules on how to form a trial committee, the Senate has in the past passed a resolution authorizing the party leaders to each recommend six senators and a chairperson to run it. Those committees had the ability to call witnesses and issue final reports to the Senate ahead of eventual trials.

While there is sufficient precedent for this approach, Democrats are likely to try and avoid a trial if they can halt the process completely, especially in a presidential election year where immigration and border security are top issues.

Echoing Trump’s defense during his impeachments, Schumer has called the House effort a “sham.”

“House Republicans failed to produce any evidence that Secretary Mayorkas has committed any crime,” Schumer said. “House Republicans failed to show he has violated the Constitution. House Republicans failed to present any evidence of anything resembling an impeachable offense.”

MOVING TO A TRIAL

If the Senate were to proceed to a trial, senators would be forced to sit in their seats for the duration, maybe weeks, while the House impeachment managers and lawyers representing Mayorkas make their cases. The Senate is allowed to call witnesses, as well, if it so decides. Senators also have an opportunity to question the two sides before a final vote on whether to convict.

While the right flank of the Senate’s GOP conference is lobbying for that scenario, senators in both parties have said they don’t think it’s the best use of the chamber’s time. And some Republicans have suggested the process was not serious enough in the House.

North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis said earlier this month that he thinks Mayorkas has fallen short but that “there’s a lot of time that goes into a thoughtful impeachment process, and a couple of hearings in a month, or month and a half doesn’t seem like it fits that bill.”
