Chinese Tourist Visa (L Visa) – The Complete Guide

travel visa for China

If you need information about how to obtain a tourist visa (or L visa) for China, you’ve come to the right place.

If instead, you’re interested in another type of visa (work, student, business, etc) then you can read our complete guide on Chinese visas .

Do I need a visa to visit China as a tourist?

  • You are in transit in China for less than 144 hours .
  • If you’re staying in Shenzhen (on the border of Hong Kong) for less than five days or in Zhuhai (at the border with Macao) for less than three days .
  • If you’re staying on Hainan Island with an organized tour with a minimum of five people for a maximum of fifteen days.

To stay for tourism reasons in Hong Kong or Macao for less than six months no visa is required (depending on your nationality).

When should I apply for a Chinese visa?

Where can i apply for a chinese tourist visa, in your country.

In many countries visas are by now handled by the CVASC ( Chinese Visa Application Service Center ).

As far as the United States goes, you need to contact the Chinese Consulate in your state of residence ( here you’ll find a list of consulates ).

If you’re not a US resident and your country isn’t on the CVASC list (see the link above), then you’ll have to contact one of the Chinese Consulates in your own country.

Note that, aside from rare exceptions, it’s not possible to send your passport and request a visa through the mail; you have to show up in person at the CVASC or at the Chinese Consulate.

If for some reason you don’t want to, or you can’t show up personally, you can use an agency to get your Chinese Visa . This will have a supplementary cost, but it may still be cheaper than the cost of the trip to the nearest CVASC or Chinese Consulate.

In this case, you’ll have to send your passport (and other necessary documents) to the agency and they will handle everything. To apply for a visa service through an agency you can use the form above on the right.

At the moment we recommend Visa HQ, a reputable agency that charges 79 USD for its Chinese Visa service. Click here to learn more!

From 2016, in some cases, you can also apply for a group visa online . You can click on the previous link to learn more.

Even if in theory you can only apply for the visa in your country of residence, in practicality you can also get it elsewhere, so long as it’s a country that holds diplomatic relations with China. The easiest place to get one is certainly Hong Kong. You can check out our complete guide to applying for a Chinese visa in Hong Kong to learn more.

How long will a Chinese visa last?

How much does a chinese visa cost and how long will it take to get one.

In general, obtaining a visa will take four business days. To get a visa in 2-3 business days you can apply for the Express Service (it costs an additional 20 USD); while to get a visa within one business day you can apply for Rush Service (which costs an additional 30 USD). Note that the Rush Service is granted only in documented cases of extreme urgency.

What documents will I need to get a visa?

  • A passport valid for at least six months (that is it will not expire in less than six months and has at least two empty pages);
  • Photocopy of your passport (both the photo page and pages with Chinese visas);
  • A properly filled-out visa application ( you can download it here );
  • Two passport photos;
  • A return air ticket to and from China ( click here to read our guide on flights to China ) plus your intended itinerary during your stay in China;
  • Your proposed itinerary for your stay in China . Even if, in my opinion, it’s a formality since I’ve never heard of anyone getting in trouble for not having followed the itinerary presented during the visa application process (obviously so long as you don’t go to Tibet – or in other limited access areas – without having the necessary permits);
  • Receipt from the hotel, which must be reserved before applying for the visa and contain the full names of all people that will apply for the visa ( click here to read our guide to reserve a hotel in China ).
  • As an alternative to a hotel receipt, you can also present an invitation letter from a Chinese citizen or a foreigner with a residence permit. The letter should contain information about the applicant (such as your name, gender, and date of birth), information about your stay in China (itinerary, length of stay, etc), and information about the person that is inviting you (name, telephone number, address, signature and copy of their Chinese identity card, or if the person isn’t Chinese, a copy of their passport pages containing their photo and residence permit).

How do you read a Chinese visa?

The visa is valid for three or six months from the date of issue. If for example you have a visa valid for three months, the visa will become unusable if you don’t enter into China within three months of the issue date (this is the reason that you don’t want to apply for a visa too soon).

Number of entries

The number of times you can enter and exit China with the same visa. If you have a single entry visa, this will expire automatically once you leave China (note that visiting Hong Kong or Macao counts as leaving the country).

The number of days you can stay in China (starting from the day you enter the country). For a tourist visa the stay is a maximum of 60 days.

Hi there :) I am planning a bike travel to China. However, I plan to exit China via land border and therefore will not be able to provide a return flight ticket. Do you know how to handle that at the visa application? All the best!

' data-src=

You can try to provide a train ticket, but it will depend on the embassy o CVASC if they accepted it or not. Notice that at the moment they are not emitting tourist visas (it seems that tomorrow they will start again), so the requirements could change.

The information is well understood. Thou would like to help me with agency what it means

China L Visa (Tourist Visa): Requirements & Application

From December 1, 2023, until November 30, 2024, ordinary passport holders of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia can benefit from a 15-day visa-free entry to China Mainland. This applies to purposes such as tourism, business, transit, and visiting friends and relatives in China.

China plans to enable citizens of Switzerland, Ireland, and Thailand to visit China Mainland without requiring a visa. We don't know the exact date yet, but once we do, we'll announce it on our website.

China L Visa (Tourist Visa) is designed for foreigners who wish to visit China for tourism.

In this article, we will share the details of the China L Visa, including the application process, requirements, and other vital information to ensure your trip to China goes smoothly.

Who Needs a China L Visa?

China L Visa is required for normal visits to China Mainland for almost every foreigner.

If you are planning to travel to China and you are not eligible for any of China's visa-free policies (such as the 144-hour transit visa exemption ), then you need to apply for a tourist visa (L visa) to enter China.

China Tourist Visa Requirements

To successfully obtain a China L Visa, you are required to provide the following documents:

1. A Valid Passport

Original signed passport with at least six months validity and two blank visa pages, and a copy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate.

2. A Completed Visa Application Form

The China visa application form  can be downloaded from the China embassy website of your country or our website. You need to complete it by computer, print and sign it.

3. A Recent Passport-Style Photograph

You need to prepare a recently taken color photo (bare-head, full face) against a light background of the size of 48mm×33mm.

4. Proof of Legal Entry or Residence Status (applicable to applicants who apply for visas outside their country of nationality)

If you are not applying for the China visa in the country of your citizenship, you need to provide proof of legal stay, residence, work, or study in your current location, as well as a copy of the document.

5. Original Chinese Passport or China Visa (applicable to former Chinese citizens who have acquired foreign nationality)

If you are applying for a China visa for the first time after acquiring foreign citizenship, you need to provide the original Chinese passport and a copy of the passport's information page.

If you have previously obtained a China visa and are now applying for a China visa with a new foreign passport, you need to provide a copy of the information page of your new foreign passport, as well as copies of the China visas issued on your previous passport.

In case the name on your new passport is different from the name on your original passport, you will also need to provide an official document proving the name change.

6. Additional Supporting Documents for China Tourist Visa

If you are planning independent travel (free travel) in China, you need to provide proof of round-trip international flight tickets and hotel reservations within China.

If you will join a guided tour within China, you need to provide an invitation letter issued by a registered China travel agency.

The invitation letter should include the following information:

  • The invited person's personal information includes full name, gender, and date of birth.
  • The invited person's planned itinerary includes arrival and departure dates and tourist destinations.

You are advised to submit the visa application approximately one month before the intended date of entry. This allows for sufficient time for processing and ensures that the visa is obtained on time.

How Many Times Can I Enter China on a Tourist Visa?

The number of entries allowed on a China tourist visa depends on the type of visa issued. In general, there are single-entry, double-entry, and multiple-entry tourist visas available.

A single-entry visa  allows the holder to enter China only once during the visa's validity period. Once you leave China, the visa becomes invalid, and if you plan to re-enter, you will need to apply for a new visa.

The duration of stay for each entry is usually limited to 30 days.

A double-entry visa  permits two entries into China within the visa's validity period. This means you can enter China on two separate occasions. After the second entry, the visa becomes invalid.

The multiple-entry visa  grants multiple entries into China within the visa's validity period. With this visa, you can enter and exit China multiple times during the specified duration.

China 10-Year Visa (Long-term Visa)

China's 10-year visa is an option for travelers who frequently visit China for tourism or personal purposes.

This long-term visa allows multiple entries into China over up to ten years. The maximum stay per visit is 60 days for tourists.

If you are holding a US, Canadian, or UK passport, you are now eligible for a 10-year visa for tourism.

  • A Quick Guide to Chinese Tourist Visas

the china guide blog

Since China does not have mutual visa-free agreements with many countries, ordinary passport holders from most countries who want to visit China as a tourist must obtain a tourist visa (L visa) unless they meet one of the visa exemption criteria.

While it does involve some documentation and logistics, applying for a Chinese tourist visa doesn't require too much effort or time. In this article, we will provide an overview and some tips on how to apply for a tourist visa for China or take advantage of one of the visa exemption policies. Please be aware that all government regulations are subject to change without prior notice. Contact the visa office at the Chinese embassy or consulate nearest you for the latest requirements for a Chinese tourist visa.

Chinese visa

Types of Chinese Tourist Visa

China usually issues three types of tourist visa: single-entry (valid for 3-6 months), double-entry (valid for 6 months), and multiple-entry (valid for 6 or 12 months). Single-entry tourist visas usually grant a maximum stay of 30 days, but you can ask for up to 90 days. The number of days you receive partly depends on the passport you hold. Tourist visas can normally be extended no more than two times within China.

US citizens are eligible for a 10-year multiple-entry visa with a maximum stay of 60 days per entry. In order for US citizens to be eligible for the ten-year visa, US passport holders must have more than one year of validity remaining on their passports. If their passports have one year or less of remaining validity (more than 6 months), they will receive a visa with less than one year of validity.

When and How to Apply for a Tourist Visa

The single-entry tourist visa normally has a validity period of three months so it's best to apply for a China tourist visa 30 to 60 days before your intended date of entry. If you apply too far in advance, the visa may expire before you arrive in China.

Unless you are traveling as part of a group, you will need to arrange your own visa. Some countries have visa agents but this adds substantially to the cost. If you are able to go straight to the embassy/consulate nearest you, it will be cheaper. You can search on the internet to find the Chinese embassy or consulate closest to you. You can also apply for a Chinese visa outside of your home country—just make sure that you are able to fulfill all the application requirements.

Visa applications are normally processed within three to four working days, but you can choose to pay an extra amount for rush service. If you go to the visa office in person, you may be able to get a visa on the same day for a fee.

When applying for Chinese tourist visas, the procedures, requirements, issue time, and fee may vary from country to country. Details and application forms can be found on the website of the Chinese embassy in your country. If you need an invitation letter for your application, we can help issue one.

Whatever country you are applying from, make sure that your passport is valid for at least six months at your time of arrival in China.

24, 72, and 144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

China allows 24, 72, or 144-hour visa-free stays for travelers from certain countries who transit via mainland China for a third international destination (Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan are included).

The 24-hour visa-free transit is relatively simple: it applies to travelers from most countries at most Chinese ports of entry, except the airports in Shenzhen, Yanji, Mudanjiang, Fuzhou, and Huangshan. The stopover time is calculated from your scheduled arrival time until your scheduled departure time. Travelers with this visa-free transit are allowed multiple stops (for example, USA-to-Beijing-to-Guangzhou-to-UK) as long as they leave mainland China within 24 hours.

Xi'an, Chongqing, Guilin, Harbin, and Changsha also allow 72-hour visa-free entry for transiting travelers with passports from certain countries. The 72-hour period is counted from the moment you receive your entry permit. Travelers with this visa-free transit are only allowed to travel within the city they entered. For example, if you enter through Xi'an Xianyang International Airport, you are only allowed to travel within the Xi'an area.

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Shanghai-Jiangsu-Zhejiang region, Guangdong, Chengdu, Kunming, Xiamen, Qingdao, Wuhan, and Liaoning allow 144-hour visa-free entry for transiting travelers with passports from the same countries as the 72-hour visa-free transit. The 144-hour period starts from 00:00 of the day following your arrival; that usually means a few extra hours to spend in China. Travelers with this visa-free transit are not allowed to travel outside the region or province they enter. For example, if you enter through Beijing, you are only allowed to travel within Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei province, so you cannot visit Shanghai and/or depart from Shanghai.

Countries that are eligible for the 72-hour & 144-hour visa-free transit

European countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Russia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia (FYROM), Albania, Belarus, and Monaco Countries in the Americas: the United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Chile Countries in Oceania: Australia and New Zealand Asian countries: Korea, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar

Here is a tool from the Chinese government that allows you to check if you are qualified for one of the above forms of visa-free transit.

How to apply for visa-free transit

To apply for any of the above three forms of visa-free transit, you must present your plane, ship, or train ticket with confirmed seat and date (a standby ticket is not acceptable) for a third country that must be different from the country you traveled from. For example, if you are doing a USA-to-Beijing-to-Hong Kong trip, you are eligible for visa-free transit, but if you are doing a USA-to-Beijing-to-USA trip, then you will not be eligible. You may also need a visa for the third country or region if applicable.

Make sure that your passport is valid at least 6 months from the date of entry, and remember to fill the arrival/departure card at the airport or on the airplane before you land before you apply for the visa-free entry permit.

Other Visa Exemption Policies

Travelers holding a valid ordinary passport from one of the following countries are eligible to visit Hainan province for 30 days without a visa: Russia, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Norway, Ukraine, Italy, Austria, Finland, Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, UAE, Qatar, Monaco, Belarus.

Visitors must travel with a travel agency registered in Hainan province. They can enter Hainan Island through any airport or ship port in Hainan province, but are not allowed to travel outside the province.

Foreign travelers arriving in Shanghai on a cruise ship can visit Shanghai and some other Chinese cities (including Beijing) for up to 15 days without a visa provided they leave China on the same ship. Travelers making use of the 15-day visa exemption are required to travel with tour groups (of a minimum of two people) organized by a travel agency that is registered in China. Travel agencies must submit details of their tour groups to the authorities at least 24 hours before the ships arrive in Shanghai; this means that travelers need to book the tour in advance to leave enough time for the travel agency to complete the application.

No visa is required for ordinary passport holders from the following countries: 90 days: San Marino 30 days: Bahamas; Ecuador; Fiji; Grenada; Mauritius; Serbia; Seychelles; Tonga; Barbados (June 1st, 2017) 15 days: Brunei; Japan; Singapore

Travel to Tibet

The requirements for visiting Tibet are very different from those for other provinces in China. All travelers to Tibet must arrange their trip in advance with a registered travel agency. This is the rule and there are no exceptions. Tibetan authorities issue a Tibet Travel Permit only after a traveler has secured a Chinese visa. Depending on the places you would like to visit in Tibet, you may need further documents such as a Military Permit and/or Alien Travel Permit. Contact us for the most up-to-date information on how to travel to Tibet.

Important Note

Be sure to double check the visa requirements at the Chinese embassy or consulate in your country before you travel to China, as China's visa policies, especially their visa exemption policies, can be confusing and are subject to change from time to time. Sometimes the visa rules may be interpreted differently by various cruise lines or local officials at the port of entry.

In order to avoid any possible confusion or inconvenience, we suggest that every traveler who plans to take advantage of any visa-free policies check with the relevant port of entry in China or the Chinese embassy/consulate in your country before you travel to China. Before you board the plane bound for China, you can also ask your airline to check if you will be able to get the visa-free entry permit upon arrival. If you are not sure whether you are eligible for the visa-free entry permit, you can instead apply for a regular transit visa or a tourist visa in your home country. If you are planning a tour with us, our travel specialists will also help you with the visa issues. ■

How to Apply for a China Visa — a Step-by-Step Guide

How to Apply for a China Visa — a Step-by-Step Guide

From December 1st, 2023 to November 30th, 2024, travelers from France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia can enjoy a 15-day visa-free entry to China for tourism, business, transit, and visiting friends and relatives in China.

How to Apply for a China Visa

Planning to visit China, but don't know how to apply for a China visa? We're breaking it down for you with our step by step guide, follow the steps and get your China visa efficiently.

The visa information we provide is for reference only. We are a travel agency. If you book a trip with us, we can provide you with the invitation letter when applying for a tourist visa.

1. Find out if you need a visa

The first thing is to check whether you need a visa or not. You usually need to apply for a Chinese visa unless you meet one of China's visa-free policies . 72- and 144-hour visa-free transit offer great convenience if you have a layover in China.

2. Find out which visa you need.

There are many types of China visa . Choose a visa type that applies to your situation. If you are planning to go on a vacation in China, apply for a Tourist Visa (L Visa).

3. Prepare the required documents.

The following list of documents are required for any China visa application:

  • A valid passport. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months when you enter China.
  • A complete visa application form (The visa application form can be downloaded from the Chinese embassy website or from our website. You complete it by computer, print and sign it. In some countries such as UK you should complete an online form . On the form, you might find an item "Serial number of invitation letter of the authorized organization", you may skip this item if you don't have an invitation letter, or the invitation letter is not of this type.)
  • A recent passport-type photograph (head and shoulders only, front view, with a white background, approximately 48mmx33mm)

Along with the aforementioned generally required documents, several additional documents are required depending upon the type of China visa applied for.

For instance, if you are applying for a tourist L visa , you need to prepare an air ticket booking record (round trip) and proof of a hotel reservation OR an invitation letter issued by a Chinese travel agency. ( An invitation letter could be provided by us without extra charge if a China tour of 3 days or more is booked .)

An invitation letter can replace the air ticket and hotel booking if you are planning to stay with friends or family who live in China and can't provide the hotel confirmation, or if your travel is being organized by a travel agency (or other duly authorized organization) in China . We can provide you with the invitation letter if you book a tour with us.

4. Submit the application.

You may submit the application to the Visa Office at Chinese embassies or consulates, or China Visa Application Service Centers (also called CVASC) if they are operating in your country.

Starting from 2018, visa applicants from more and more countries (including the U.S., the UK, and Canada) have to make their visa application in person and have their fingerprints collected .

The regular service processing time is 4 days, and the rushed service takes about 1 day. The latter is only available in extreme emergencies pending a consular officer's approval.

5. Pay the fee and collect your visa.

Go to the place where you apply for China visa, pay the fee and collect your visa.

The fees vary enormously depending on your nationality and number of entries. Here we listed China visa price for some countries for your reference. It may change based on the updated policies.

The fees shown in the table are only for the cost of visa. If you apply through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center, the service fee and tax are required.

When to Apply for a Visa

It is important to get your visa early, but not too early because it is only valid for 90/180 days for single/double-entry visas from the issue date.

It is usually recommended that you apply for the visa one or two months before the intended travel .

Apply for Special Permits, If Necessary.

If you are planning on traveling to the Tibet Autonomous Region, you will need to get a Tibet Travel Permit from a Chinese travel agency. As a travel agency based in China for more than 20 years, we can help you apply for the Tibet Travel Permit.

China is known for its architectural wonders, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, martial arts and delectable cuisine that varies from one part of the country to another. China is also the largest exporter and importer of goods in the world, and that’s what makes it a destination frequented not just by tourists but by business travellers as well. If the pandemic has played a spoilsport to all your plans of going to China earlier, then we’ve got good news for you! China recently resumed issuing all types of visas, and our step-by-step guide will help you easily apply for a visa to China.

Identify if you need a visa or not

The first step is to figure out whether you need the visa or not. As per the Chinese Visa Application Center, citizens of 53 nationalities, while transiting through China, can exit the airport and visit the country without a visa for a limited stay. Below are the details for visa-free transit.

Transit without visa (twov).

In case you have a layover in China while going to another country, then China offers a transit without visa (TWOV) that allows passengers to travel visa-free for 24 hours, 72 hours and 144 hours. While TWOV for 24 hours is available to almost all nationalities, visa-free transit for 72 and 144 hours is only given to citizens of 53 countries, including the USA, Canada, the UK, Russia and Australia.

Exemption of visa

Brunei, Japan and Singapore nationals enjoy a much wider exemption. They can stay in China without a visa for up to 15 days. If you are not meeting any visa-relaxation criteria due to your nationality or travel plans, then continue reading to know the whole procedure to get the visa.

Types of visas

China, just like any other country, has multiple types of visas. So, the next step in this procedure is to identify the category of the visa you require, as that will determine the documents to be included with the application.

There are four main types of visas:

  • Diplomatic visa
  • Courtesy visa
  • Service visa
  • Ordinary visa

Ordinary visa is further divided into 16 categories:

  • Tourist visa(L)
  • Business visa (M)
  • Work visa (Z)
  • Study visa (X1)
  • Study visa (X2)
  • Non commerce visa (F)
  • Private visa (S1 – long term)
  • Private visa (S2 – short term)
  • Family visa (Q1 – long term)
  • Family visa (Q2 – short term)
  • Crew visa (C)
  • Permanent residence (D)
  • Journalist visa (J1)
  • Journalist visa (J2)
  • Transit visa (G)
  • Foreigner of high talent (R)

Once you have worked out your category of visa, the next step is to fill in the application form available online and schedule your appointment for the submission of documents. Depending on where you live, the appointment can be scheduled at the Chinese embassy/consulate or the visa application centre appointed by the Chinese government. You can also hire a travel agent to help you submit the application. Once the appointment is set, collect all the documents required for the visa.

China visa requirement

Below are the documents that are mandatory for all the applicants applying, irrespective of categories.

  • An original passport that has six months of validity from the date of entry to China, along with two blank pages on the passport.
  • A photocopy of the bio-data page.
  • Two recent photographs (33mm X 48 mm in size) over a white background.
  • A visa application form duly filled in and signed.
  • Submit original and photocopy of valid certificates of residence, employment or student status and any other certificates you may have of your legal stay.
  • Covering letter – mention details as per your visa type and category.

If you are applying for a tourist visa (L)

Assuming that you are visiting China for a vacation, then below are the supporting documents that must be attached with mandatory documents.

  • Confirmed round-trip air tickets and hotel bookings. Or an invitation letter issued by the invitee in case you have been invited.
  • Covering letter detailing the itinerary, including the number of days you plan to stay and places to visit. In case you have been invited, then also mention the name, address and contact number of the inviting/contact company/person.
  • Bank statements from the past six months, along with an original bank certificate or a letter from the employer of the applicant, mentioning the following details: name, contact number of the employer and the applicant’s income statement.

Chinese visa application process (online & offline)

After filling in the online visa application form and scheduling an appointment, you have to visit the embassy/consulate or the visa centre on the appointment date. You will be called at the counter to submit all the documents. The staff will review these documents and give you a payment invoice for the visa fee along with the cashier’s number. Pay the fee and cross-check the details in the pick-up form. In case you have any questions, then you should contact the staff immediately. It is important to keep the pick-up form safe as it needs to be presented at the time of passport collection.

You can check the status of your application online and later go to the embassy/consulate or the visa centre for passport collection. You can apply for a visa offline as well, where you need to make an appointment at the Embassy/consulate or the visa centre.

The visa fee for a single entry and double and multiple entries varies from one country to another. Therefore, it is advised to check the cost of the same on the website of the embassy/consulate or the visa application centre.

Visa renewal process in China

The visa can be extended in China; however, you must apply for the extension at least seven days before your visa expires. The process can be initiated at Local Entry and Exit Administration under the Public Security Bureau.

Chinese visa verification process

All documents need to be self-verified before submission. Along with the application form, the documents are sent to the embassy for verification. The verification process usually takes four business days after the submission of the application; however, it can take longer than that. In case you wish to expedite the process, then you can opt for the express process, which takes two to three business days.

How to Apply for a China Tourist Visa

Before embarking on your China trip, it’s necessary to obtain a Chinese tourist visa, aka L visa or travel visa, unless that you are eligible for China's visa-free policies . No matter you will join a group tour or travel independently, you need to apply for the visa on your own in most cases, but there is a slight difference in the two scenarios.

Join a group tour

If you book a tour from a China agency like TravelChinaGuide, the process might be easier. You can ask for an invitation letter from the agency, which is of great help in visa application and can improve the chance for visa approval to some degree.

Travel independently

Round-trip tickets and hotel reservations are required for tourist visa application for independent travelers. Submit as detailed supporting documents as you can to justify your travel itinerary. Usually the hotel bookings should cover your whole stay length in China and be consistent with the dates of arrival and departure shown on your tickets, otherwise your visa may get rejected.

1. Prepare your passport and ensure its validity is no less than six months. 2. Book round-trip tickets and hotels, and print the booking records. Alternatively, book a tour from a travel agency and get the invitation letter. 3. Complete the application form online. (See 8 Tips for Filling out Chinese Visa Application Form ) 4. Book an appoinment with Chinese embassy / consulate or CVASC which has jurisdiction in your residence area and submit the above documents at the appointed time 5. Collect your passport and visa on the appointed date and pay the fee.

How Much Does a China Tourist Visa Cost?

How long does it take for the application.

It normally takes only four working days. In case you are in a hurry, you may apply for the expedited services like same day collection service or 2-3 day collection service. Of course, such services require an additional fee.

How Far in Advance Do I Apply for a Tourist Visa for China?

It's recommended to apply six weeks ahead of your planned visit, which is neither too early nor too late.

How Long Is a China Tourist Visa Valid?

A China tourist visa is normally valid for three months from the date of issue. For US citizens, they may get a multiple-entry tourist visa valid for 10 years. The allowed stay duration ranges from 30 days to 90 days decided by consular officers on the basis of your travel itinerary.

The main difference between a Business Visa and a Tourist Visa for China lies in the purpose of the visit, the activities that you are allowed to engage in, and the documentation required to apply. Here are the key distinctions:

Whereas, with the Tourist Visa (L Visa) you can engage in leisure and recreational activities but not business-related or employment activities.

Documentation Requirements:

The other difference is in the documentation required. For Business Visas, you typically need to provide documents related to the business purpose of the visit, such as an invitation letter from a Chinese business entity and details about the planned business activities in China.

In contrast, for the Tourist Visa, you require documents that indicate the tourist nature of the trip, such as flight itinerary and hotel reservations.

Can I change my visa type while in China?

In certain circumstances, it may be possible to change your visa type while in China.

If you are considering changing your visa type, you’ll need to provide valid reasons for the change, such as a change in employment, study program, or family circumstances and you’ll need to provide documentation.

It’s important to start the process well in advance of the expiration of your current visa as changing visa types may take time.

Before you attempt to change your visa type, it’s highly recommended to consult with the local immigration authorities or the Entry-Exit Administration to understand the specific requirements and procedures applicable to your situation.

Can I apply for another visa for China before it expires?

Generally speaking, yes, you can apply for another visa for China before your current visa expires.

However, this will depend on your specific situation and the rules and regulations set by the Chinese authorities.

China Tourist Visa (L)

The majority of foreign nationals are required to obtain a visa for China order to travel to and enjoy a stay in the country, depending on the purpose of their stay. Eligible citizens who wish to travel to China for a holiday or purposes of sightseeing are first required to obtain a China tourist visa .

It is expected that that an electronic China tourist visa application will be implemented in the near future, eliminating the need to apply for a visa in person . However, at the moment, it is currently necessary to apply for the tourist visa for China from a Chinese embassy or consulate by providing a range of supporting documentation.

Who Needs a Tourist visa for China?

All foreign citizens who are not from one of the few China visa-free countries are required to apply for a tourist visa for China in order to travel to the country for a holiday. Citizens of the following countries are visa-exempt for China for short stays :

There are also a number of exceptions for visa-free travel for certain non-visa waiver foreign nationals , depending on which regions of China they are visiting, and whether they are transiting through China on the way to an onward destination or not.

What Is a L Visa for China?

The China tourist visa (classified as an L type visa) is issued for a short stay in China for purposes of tourism and sightseeing . For the majority of eligible nationals, the tourist visa for China is usually issued as either a single or double entry visa, valid for 3 or 6 months . Citizens of the UK, the United States, Canada and Argentina may be issued a 10-year China tourist visa with multiple entries, although 10-year validity is not guaranteed.

An approved tourist visa for China usually permits a maximum stay of 60 days with each entry to the country. However, the final decision about the length of stay permitted, as well as the number of entries and the period of validity, is made at the discretion of the individual Chinese consular representative who grants the visa.

Those who wish to travel to China for other purposes such as to work, study, or visit relatives, are required to obtain one of the other visa types for China to visit the country.

How to Get a Tourist Visa to China?

In order to obtain a Chinese tourist visa , it is first necessary to meet the tourist visa requirements for China , which involve having:

  • Passport from an eligible country valid for at least 1 year from the date of application, containing at least 2 blank pages
  • A completed China tourist application form, printed and signed
  • A recent photograph of the traveler taken against a white background, passport-sized (33mm x 48mm)
  • A copy of round-trip flight confirmation and a hotel booking confirmation with the applicant’s name highlighted
  • An invitation letter from a Chinese citizen and a photocopy of both sides of that person’s Chinese identity card

Once the applicant has met all of these requirements, it is necessary to present the China tourist application form and all of the supporting documentation at the nearest Chinese embassy or consulate . Once all the documentation has been submitted, applicants are given a pick-up slip that indicates the date they should return to pay the visa fee and collect their approved tourist visa.

It usually takes around 4 business days to process the China tourist visa application, although in same cases it may take less time. Nevertheless, applicants are advised to apply for the tourist visa for China between one to two months before the intended arrival date in China, to allow time to solve any complications that may arise during the application.

The China-Thailand reciprocal visa exemption agreement, effective on March 1, allows holders of ordinary passports from each country to visit the other visa-free for up to 30 days per entry, with a cumulative stay of 90 days per half year. Signed on Jan. 28, the agreement promotes bilateral tourism and cooperation. In January, bookings on China’s travel service platform http://Trip.comTrip.com> Group for March trips to Thailand quadrupled over December 2023. Over 30% more Chinese visitors arrived in Thailand this March 1 than on the same day last year, according to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). In the first two months of this year, Thailand welcomed over a million Chinese tourists, re-establishing China as its primary inbound tourism contributor. [ CPPCC, in Chinese ]

  • China, Thailand enter 'visa-free' era from March 1

By Lin Zhuowei

(ECNS) — China and Thailand permanently exempted visa requirements for each other's citizens on March 1, right after a temporary visa waiver for Chinese visitors that commenced last September expired on Feb. 29.

The new deal is expected to facilitate tourism and economic recovery in both countries.

Under the new arrangement, Chinese passport holders are granted visa-free travel and a maximum stay of 30 days per entry in Thailand and vice versa. A total of 90 days stay is allowed in case of multiple entries within 180 days.

A booster for tourism and economic recovery

Thailand's promotion of a visa-free policy is regarded as a way to lift the tourism industry and national economy by enticing more Chinese travelers.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, China was a leading contributor to Thailand's tourism sector, which is a key factor in the growth of Southeast Asia's second-largest economy. However, the comeback of Chinese tourists to Thailand has been slow.

In 2019, visitors from China constituted over 25 percent of the total 40 million foreign arrivals. However, in the past year, they comprised only 3.5 million of the 28 million tourists, which fell short of the 4-million target set by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, making it only the second largest group of foreign visitors after Malaysians.

In 2024, the tourism authority has set the target for Chinese tourists at 8.2 million, with expectations running high on the visa-free policy.

"This will not only boost Thailand's tourism industry but also signify further improvement in the friendly relations between the two countries," Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin anticipated at a press conference after a cabinet meeting.

A driver of people-to-people exchanges

Chinese spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Wang Wenbin foresees a significant increase in the number of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand. "This visa-free era will bring people-to-people exchanges to a new height," Wang added.

"No need for a visa. No fee is charged. All you need is a plane ticket. It is as easy as an inbound travel to Sanya," a Chinese netizen shared her excitement in a post on China's lifestyle-sharing social media platform Xiaohongshu.

Hearing news of the continuation of the visa waiver policy, an avid traveler surnamed Xu from Beijing told ecns.cn that she plans to move up her schedule to visit Thailand.

Despite Chinese sightseers' enthusiasm, industrial experts advise cautious optimism.

"Visitors from China are highly likely to grow in numbers, but the appeal of the visa-free policy could be diluted by other countries that have announced similar policies, including Singapore and Malaysia," said Zhao Jun, founder of Lanmao Travel, a leading self-guided tour company focused on the Southeast Asian market.

"Visa-free policy for Chinese tourists is the way to go in Southeast Asia," Zhao added. With more mutual visa-free policies being reached between China and countries in the region, analysts pointed out that China will open its gate wider and there will be more cultural exchanges.

Thailand expands visa-free access for tourists from China and Kazakhstan

Passport holders from both countries will be able to enter and stay in thailand for up to 30 days without visas..

Photo of TAT Newsroom

Bangkok, 1 March 2024 – The Royal Thai Government has extended visa-free access for tourists from China and Kazakhstan, effective from today onwards.

Thailand-China mutual visa exemption

Thailand and China signed an agreement for a mutual visa entry for citizens of both countries on 28 January 2024, which officially comes into effect today.

The agreement exempts holders of valid Thai ordinary passports and valid Chinese passports for public affairs and ordinary passports from visa requirement for entering, exiting, or transiting the other country’s territory for a 30-day stay. Cumulative stays must not exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.

This is except for those with the purposes of residing or engaging in employment, study, media activities or other activities that require prior approval from competent authorities of the other country.

Thailand previously granted temporary visa exemption for Chinese tourists from 25 September 2023 to 29 February 2024.

China is one of Thailand’s largest markets. In 2023, the number of Chinese arrivals in Thailand reached 3.5 million, making it the second largest market after Malaysia and before South Korea, India, and Russia. From 1 January to 26 February 2024, Thailand welcomed 1.12 million Chinese arrivals.

Extended visa exemption for Kazakhstani tourists

The previous temporary visa exemption scheme for Kazakhstani tourists, which started on 25 September 2023, ended on 29 February 2024.

Given the significant increase in the number of Kazakhstani tourists to Thailand, the Thai cabinet has approved an extension of the temporary visa exemption for visitors from Kazakhstan until 31 August 2024.

They will be granted a temporary visa exemption for a 30-day stay on tourism purpose.

Kazakhstan is one of Thailand’s fastest growing markets and is the second largest market in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), after Russia.

In 2023, Thailand recorded 172,489 visitors from Kazakhstan, representing a 190% growth over 2022. From 1 January to 26 February 2024, the number increased 11% over the same period in 2023 to 55,566 arrivals.

Thailand expects over 20,000 Chinese tourists a day as free visa starts

The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) expects more than 20,000 Chinese arrivals per day from March 1 when Thailand and China permanently waive visa requirements for their citizens.

“The confidence of Chinese tourists in travelling within Thailand has been fully restored,” ATTA president Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn said on Friday, citing statistics of Chinese arrivals in the first two months of 2024 at over 1 million people.

“However, the government must continue tourism promotion campaigns together with private partners to attract Chinese tour agencies organising group tours and chartered flights,” he added

Sisdivachr hoped that the permanent free visa policy would help maintain Chinese arrivals at over 20,000 per day throughout the year, which would help Thailand meet the target of welcoming 40 million foreign arrivals, generating around 2.3 trillion baht in revenue.

“The key is to keep the confidence level high. The government must make sure there are no negative news that could disrupt tourists’ confidence in travelling to Thailand, especially regarding tourists’ safety,” he said.

He was referring to the news of a Chinese tourist in Phuket having to wait two hours for an ambulance after she fell to the ground while parasailing and broke her leg. The tourist recently posted her grievance on social media, which went viral.

“The government must order all provincial governors to increase measures to ensure tourists’ safety as well as improve the quality of tourist services. This will ensure that the tourists would have a good experience while in Thailand,” said Sisdivachr.

Thailand had first implemented temporary visa exemption in September last year, beginning with visitors from China and Kazakhstan followed by India and Taiwan in November.

The temporary visa waiver for the citizens of China and Kazakhstan expired on February 29, but Chinese tourists can continue visiting Thailand under the permanent free visa policy, which started on March 1.

Thailand facilitates transfer of 900 scam victims from myanmar to china, ‘fast and furious’ fun as roger federer ‘floats through thailand’.

Army of tourists: China regained its position as the top source market for foreign tourists to Thailand so far this year, according to the Thai Tourism and Sports Minister. — Bloomberg

Adisorn Sangkrajang arrived early at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport on Thursday evening for his flight bound for Shanghai.

He has been long looking forward to his first trip to China, and when the plane touched down early Friday morning, he became one of the first to benefit from the “visa-free era” between Thailand and China that took effect on March 1.

“I’m thrilled about my first trip to China, and the visa exemption is incredibly convenient,” said the 42-year-old company employee, who is travelling with 11 other colleagues.

“This is my first visit, but I might return for a second or third time,” he said.

In late January, China and Thailand signed an agreement on mutual visa exemption and to be effective on March 1.

Since then, the booking of tours to China has increased significantly, said Thai tour operator Kavisara Charoenporn, who organised a chartered flight that departed on Friday to Zhangjiajie, a picturesque spot in central China.

The chartered flights from Bangkok to Zhangjiajie have increased from two to three times a week beginning in March, said Kavisara.

Even before the agreement came into effect on Friday, Chinese tourists have enjoyed a temporary visa exemption implemented by the Thai government since last September.

The signing of the agreement became another boost.

China regained its position as the top source market for foreign tourists to Thailand so far this year, with more than 1.1 million arrivals as of Feb 25, out of the nearly six million foreign visitors received by Thailand, according to Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol.

The number is expected to continue the upward trend with visa waivers taking effect and the increasing number of flights to Thailand offered by several airlines, said the minister.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has hailed the visa exemption agreement as a milestone for the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

“This is an important step in Thailand-China relations and will have a great impact on stimulating the Thai economy, not just in terms of trade or investment.

“Mutual tourism will greatly improve income from tourists, which is sent directly to merchants in Thailand,” he said on social media on the day of the signing. — Xinhua

Five categories of visa holders get relief after visa expiration in UAE

 alt=

The UAE has given the nod for five categories of visa holders to stay back for six more months even after their visas had expired. People who got relief include Golden visa holders, Green visa holders, widows or divorced women, students who completed studies with university or college visas and skilled professionals classified by the Ministry of Human Resources. The family members of the Golden and Green visa holders could also get the benefit. The relief was granted to complete the official formalities and explore other job opportunities.

Green visa UAE introduced the Green Visa - a self-sponsored residence visa recently and it is valid for up to five years. A handful of criteria need to be fulfilled to apply for this visa. As per the notification published by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), entrepreneurs, freelancers, and skilled workers can apply for this visa. An entry permit of sixty days would be granted to a foreigner to come to UAE and complete the visa procedure.

Golden visa A long-term residency visa issued by the United Arab Emirates to attract skilled professionals, investors, entrepreneurs, and talented individuals to live and work in the country, the golden visa was introduced as part of the UAE government's efforts to promote economic diversification and attract foreign investment. It offers recipients and their families the opportunity to reside in the UAE for a longer duration without the need for a local sponsor. It typically grants a residency period of 5 or 10 years, renewable upon expiration, depending on the category and eligibility criteria.
