Croatia Eliminates COVID-19 Travel Entry Rules — What to Know

Previously, visitors had to show proof of vaccination, a negative COVID-19 test, and proof of accommodations within the country to come as well as fill out an entry form online.

croatia travel news

Croatia became the latest country to eliminate all COVID-19-related entry requirements this week, allowing travelers to visit without any testing, vaccination, or quarantine rules in place.

The European country reverted to pre-pandemic entry requirements on May 1, choosing to not extend the "Decision on Temporary Restriction of Crossing the Border Crossings of the Republic of Croatia," according to the Croatian National Tourist Board . Instead, "entry into the Republic of Croatia is allowed subject to the conditions of entry valid before the COVID 19 epidemic."

Travelers are permitted to enter the country from the air, land, or sea, according to the tourist board.

While there are no pandemic-related rules at the borders, masks are still recommended to be worn on public transportation and in indoor restaurants. Face coverings are only required in health care and social welfare institutions.

Currently, Croatia is averaging just over 690 new cases each day, according to Reuters , which is a significant drop from its peak in January. So far, the country has vaccinated just over 54.6% of its population, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center .

Croatia joins several other European countries in either easing COVID-19-related restrictions or doing away with them altogether like the United Kingdom , Sweden , Iceland , and Ireland . Others have rolled back restrictions like the Netherlands , which dropped pre-arrival testing for vaccinated visitors, and Italy , which just lifted its "Green Pass," no longer requiring visitors to show proof of vaccination to visit places like restaurants, bars, and museums.

Travelers who do go to Croatia will find southern Europe's first dark sky community in the town of Jelsa on the northern coast of Hvar, as well as stunning island resorts and palace escapes .

What to expect when traveling to Croatia this summer as rules are eased

For travelers heading to  Croatia  this summer, vacations have gotten much easier to manage as the tourism board announced that all remaining pandemic entry restrictions have been dropped.

Following similar measures in other Mediterranean countries like Greece and Cyprus , Croatia has eliminated domestic restrictions and entry rules like the requirement to complete a passenger locator form and to present proof of vaccination or recovery at the borders.

The measures had been in place until April 30 and the government announced this week that they had decided not to extend them.

Do you need a visa to go to Croatia?

“All travelers entering Croatia can now do so under the same conditions of entry that were in force before the  COVID19  pandemic, i.e. with valid  travel documents ,” the Croatian National Tourism Board said on Tuesday.

Croatia also did away with the mask mandate. Now it's only required to enter healthcare facilities.

How to get around in Croatia

There’s now little sign life was ever curtailed in Croatia over the past two years as domestic measures have been dropped too. Hospitality venues are open and operating at full capacity, festivals have returned, and beaches and museums are already welcoming steady streams of visitors even though the tourism season has yet to get into full swing.

See the best of Croatia with this week-long itinerary

"With a number of new hotels, restaurants, and events confirmed for this summer, Croatia is set for a strong season ahead," Darija Reic, director of the tourist board’s office in the UK, said in a statement.

Croatia is bordered by Hungary to the northeast, Slovenia to the morthwest, Serbia to the east, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro to the south covering an area of 56,594 km² and a population of over 4 millions of people (2021). It is the home of the intersection of Eastern and Western Europe, this diversity expressed through its architecture, cuisine, art and literature. The Mediterranean influences from Greece and Italy are most noticeable in the coastal areas.

croatia travel news

The Adriatic Coast is undoubtedly the most popular tourist destination in Croatia and a mecca for those looking for a holiday at Croatia’s paradise beaches and islands. It has the most concave coastline in Europe and boasts 1,185 islands and islets, of which only 66 are inhabited!

Croatia once rated as the 18th most popular tourist destination in the world – This vibrant, thriving country ranks highly among Central European countries for education, healthcare, quality of life and a dynamic economy.

Croatia is not a part of the Schengen area, but if you have a valid Schengen Multi Entry Visa (Visa type C) you can enter Croatia. Note that there is only Multi Entry visa, not Single Entry.

Croatia blog: When to go?

croatia travel news

When is the best time to visit Croatia? Croatia has mixed climate zones, with the north having a temperate climate while the central and mountainous regions have chilly air. Spring and autumn have gentle winds blowing along the coast. And winter in Croatia is very cold and snowy, especially in the central and northern regions.

The weather in Croatia is very diverse, when the North is characterized by a temperate zone, the midland and mountainous areas have a cold air. In particular, in the winter in this country is very cold and snowy, very suitable for those who love skiing, fishing on glaciers, …

Croatia blog: Getting there and around

croatia travel news

There are many ways to get to Croatia such as by ferry from Bari, Italy, by train from neighboring countries, by plane… We chose to take the train from Salzburg, Austria to Zagreb, Croatia (when the train stops at the border of Slovenia and Croatia, there will be customs to check passports.) The train takes 6 hours, you can choose the night train to sleep overnight to save money and have more time to exploring. Because we went to Plitvice the next day, we had to take the day train, in general, it was quite tiring, and there was no shops to buy foods on the train.

Although it is a direct train, but it will separate carriages in Villach, the upper half goes to Klagenfurt, Austria, the lower half goes to Zagreb, so please note that you should sit in the correct train car. Train fare for Salzburg – Zagreb route is €39/person.

Getting around the capital of Zagreb

We only stayed in Zagreb for a while, so we mostly walking. The only way to go to Zagreb airport is by bus. The airport bus running from 4:30am to 9pm, every 30 minutes with a trip. One-way fare is 30 Kuna, but you can’t buy it online, you have to buy it at the ticket counters.

You can check ticket prices and timetables at the following link .

croatia travel news

Zagreb – Plitvice Lakes National Park

You can go to Zagreb Main Bus Station to buy tickets at the counter or buy online. But I saw that there was a bus trip every 30 minutes, so you don’t have to buy it in advance.

croatia travel news

It is recommended to buy a cheap 2-way ticket (cheaper 50 kuna) but the playing time is a bit short of 5 hours (due to the traveling time from Zagreb to Plitvice takes more than 2 hours already). This depends, but we saw 5 hours is enough to visit key attractions.

You can check ticket prices and running times at the following link .

Zagreb – Dubrovnik

croatia travel news

According to Google, you can get to Dubrovnik from Zagreb in two ways:

  • Bus : also buy tickets at Zagreb main bus station, take 12 hours, cost 355 Kuna.
  • Plane : Croatia Airlines, flight time 55 minutes, fare depends on time of flight.

At first, me and my sister planned to take the bus for cheap, but fortunately, we discovered that Croatia Airlines has a ticket price for people under 25 years old, only 80% of the regular fare. It also offered both night and early morning flights, the price is only about 405 Kuna, which is not very expensive, so we decided to fly.

Before I went, I was also a bit nervous because If fly to Dubrovnik at midnight, afraid lack of vehicle to get to city center. So I just emailed to ask my hotel owner, and he said there is a bus operates 24/24 every time a flight lands. You just need to come out of the restricted area to see a ticket counter of Atlas company.

One-way ticket is 40 Kuna, if you buy a round trip ticket, you will only pay 70 Kuna, so I recommend buying a round-trip ticket combo for convenience. Information about this bus route can be found on the following page.

croatia travel news

You can also enjoy the beauty of Croatia by cruise. Croatia has many islands, so choosing to travel by cruise or ferry is both comfortable and exploring many points. Every day the cruise will dock for you to visit the city or other destinations on the shore in Croatia.

croatia travel news

Self-driving

If you have an international driver’s license, you can rent a private car. This helps you not have to depend on the timetable of the bus and go faster and more convenient. Car rental is about 35-40 euros/day, of course you must know how to drive and show your international driver’s license and a deposit.

Croatia blog: Where to go?

Zagreb has all the essentials of a capital city: Pedestrian streets, museums, galleries, open-air cafes and a quaint downtown in the center city. However, do not miss the Dolac Market, the colorful St Mark’s Church or the Museum of Broken Relationships.

croatia travel news

Gornji Grad (Upper Town)

Gorniji will be introduced first by guides when traveling to Croatia because it is located in the heart of Zagreb. This district has a large square, surrounded by St Mark’s Church – the parish church, the spiritual place of the Croatian people. Tourists often gather here quite a lot, because they want to learn about the culture, beliefs and lifestyle of the local people.

croatia travel news

This is not a very famous Croatian destination (compared to Split or Dubrovnik) but I really like this beautiful little city. Also because it is quite small, it only takes about 1 day or even half a day to explore Zadar. Just hang around in Zadar’s Old Town and walk along the beach leading to the Sea Organ, sit and watch the sunset in special music created by waves crashing against specially built rocks to create sound, then walk out to Greetings to the Sun to enjoy an interesting light party when it is completely dark, it is enough to fully feel Zadar.

croatia travel news

Personally, I find the sunset in Zadar even more beautiful than in Santorini I watched last summer. Maybe I was lucky to come on the day the sun set was so beautiful, but anyway, I highly recommend that you try this extremely interesting experience once.

Split is the second largest city in Croatia, also a popular destination for beach lovers. Like Zadar, Split has a very lovely old town with Let Me Pass street known as the narrowest street in the world. After visiting the old town, you can walk out to Riva – a coastal road with 2 soaring rows of coconut trees and stalls selling colorful handmade items. I still remember the feeling of walking along this road in the smell of the salty sea, the gentle breeze and gazing at the Mediterranean landscape with the blue sea in golden sunlight and the mountains looming in the distance. In addition, you can also climb up to Vidilica cafe on Marjan hill for a panoramic view of the city.

croatia travel news

But Split isn’t just that. Another reason make Split is famous is because it is surrounded by many lovely islands like Hvar or Brac. In particular, the Zlatni Rat beach near Bol on the island of Brac is the place that often appears on Croatian postcards. There are daily ferrie from Split to these islands, so it is very convenient to travel, even in the peak summer season you can combine to visiting 2 islands in the same day because the ferry runs continuously.

The historic town of Trogir and the harbor located in the south of Croatia next to the city of Split is an attractive destination. It was recognized as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site in 1997 and it has many valuable historic buildings. Trogir is very special thanks to the architecture. The old city surrounded by walls is filled with churches, castles, houses and palaces from different periods including everything from Roman to Baroque style.

croatia travel news

A coastal town with a rich Roman architectural system, typically the Pula Arena. Built between 27 BC and 68 AD, this arena was also used to host concerts or large events. If you are not a history buff, rest assured that the poetic scenes here are enough to please anyone.

Euphrasian Basilica

Euphrasian Basilica bearing bold with the ancient Byzantine architecture of the Mediterranean. It can be said that the government and people have extremely preserved this sacred place to keep its original shape, even though it has undergone many events such as fires and earthquakes. Stepping into the cathedral, visitors will be really surprised by the unique design and shape. The pillars of the Basilica were built solidly and firmly to support the whole cathedral. Finely carved details, harmoniously coordinated colors create a masterpiece of art.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with turquoise lakes, limestone canyons and hundreds of waterfalls. Plitvice is the largest national park in Croatia with a special topography of mountain lakes. It is also because of this special terrain that the natural scenery here is majestic and enchanting. It is not suprise that people call this Paradise on Earth for nature lovers.

croatia travel news

To get to Plitvice, the closest and fastest way is from Zadar. That’s why I chose to fly to Zadar first. However, from the capital Zagreb or Split, there are also direct buses to Plitvice, so you can rest assured that it is very convenient to getting here.

Hvar Island

This is one of the most famous islands of Croatia. Hvar is home to many sunny beaches, lavender fields and lush vineyards. In addition, the site also has a poetic city center with Gothic palaces or marble streets. A potential Croatian tourist destination.

croatia travel news

Croatia’s most famous tourist city, which was chosen as the setting for the movie Games of Thrones. Although not as famous as Venice or Amalfi, Dubrovnik is a destination not to be missed when coming to the Mediterranean. If you has been to Santorini and loves the unique architecture with two colors of white and blue. Then in Dubrovnik you also can find a brilliant beauty of white walls and orange-red tile roofs of ancient houses lying close together. Dubrovnik is super easy to visit as its most famous and most beautiful places are the Old Town and the city walls.

croatia travel news

This is a very charming destination, like a miniature version of Dubrovnik. An island owns dense forests. The name given to the island was originally Korkyra Melaina (Black Korcula) with its coves and rolling hills. Korcula is definitely a highlight of any trip to Croatia giving you the opportunity to indulge yourself in the sea and sunbathe on the beaches. It is also home to some of Croatia’s best wines and local olive oils.

croatia travel news

Mljet Island

As an island off the coast of South Croatia, most of the island area is green forest, creating a fresh atmosphere. The rest of the island is fields, vineyards and small villages scattered like a poetic, peaceful picture. Renting a bike to explore the pine forest, boating on one of the tranquil lakes and shopping in the small but well-stocked supermarket will keep you busy and excited during your trip to Mljet.

croatia travel news

This cosmopolitan seaside town offers tourists the best: Enjoy sunny beaches and cool seawater, with bustling streets, exciting tourist attractions vibrant nightlife just a few kilometers away. Makarska also has a very special Malacological museum in the basement where you will see a large collection of fossils, snails, seashells and other interesting historical objects!

croatia travel news

This is a Croatia tourist spot you should set foot in and soak up the vibe atmosphere with a glass of Shiraz in hand. If you want to explore more, renting a bike is an easy and fun way to see the stunning island.

croatia travel news

Sipan is a popular day trip destination, especially as you’re likely to encounter companions during your stay. A trip around the island will allow you to see the Gothic Rector’s palace, palace ruins and the iconic 16th-century castle that surrounds the peaceful village of Suđurađ…

A very small town located on the Pelješac peninsula. Trstenik is a great place to soaking up in the sunlight and enjoy the clear blue beach. If you prefer to stay on the go, you can visit the town’s winery or enjoy some delicious food at one of the roadside restaurants. With a population of just 116, this town is remote and quaint, and it’s great for a night away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

croatia travel news

Pakleni Islands

Near Hvar island, the Pakleni islands attracts many tourists to its beautiful coastline. In contrast to the bustling town of Hvar, you’ll find quiet, secluded beaches and natural wonders on the many islands that make up the Pakleni archipelago. From an island of Jerolim you can visit the diving paradise off the island of Stambedar, which will give you exciting underwater adventures.

croatia travel news

Brač owns one of the most famous beaches on the Dalmatian coast. Brač offers great relaxation on white pebble beaches. It’s also a great place to hike for breathtaking views at the highest peak on the Adriatic Islands, Vidova Gora peak, stands the tallest in this tiny town.

croatia travel news

In addition above attractions, you can buy tours to neighboring countries to play such as Montenego, Bosnia & Herzegovina. Prices range from €40 – €50 for a full-day tour. We didn’t have much time, so we have to miss these points.

Croatia blog: What to eat?

Croatian cuisine is a blend of long-standing traditions with Italian, Turkish, and Hungarian flavors. Thanks to its long coastline, Croatian cuisine is famous and diverse with seafood dishes. The culinary characteristics of this Mediterranean country is delicious grilled dishes and hot stews.

Personally for me, I found the food in Croatia is very fresh, not industrialized like food in European countries. In addition, the dishes are processed and well-seasoned, not bland like Hungarian food or Austrian food.

Salata od Hobotnice (Octopus Salad)

This dish made from fresh octopus, served with potatoes, chopped parsley, minced garlic, lime juice and a little black risotto made from cuttlefish and cook with cuttlefish broth. This is a traditional dish in restaurants in Croatia.

croatia travel news

This dish made by a method uses a bell-shaped terracotta swing that is heated by burning charcoal at the bottom. When it is hot, the food will be put into cooking in a round tray, turn the hot pot over and then cover the embers on the bell-shaped pot. Peka is made from a variety of ingredients such as meats, seafood with seasonal vegetables, in which always has potatoes.

croatia travel news

Brodet (stewed seafood with vegetables): This is a dish widely sold in restaurants and eateries in Croatia. The ingredients as well as the way to prepare this dish are very simple. Chefs use 3 types of fish and a few types of shellfish such as clams, mussles, oysters, crabs… stewed with vegetables, seasoned with traditional spices for 50-60 minutes to mix the ingredients together, creating a rich broth. It is served with bread to reduce the greasy taste of the dish.

croatia travel news

Bakalar (salted cod and mashed potatoes)

if you go to Croatia on Christmas and New Year days, you will find Balakar appearing in almost every meal from restaurants to local homes. The main ingredient for this dish is cod. Fish before being processed will be soaked in cold water for about 3 days to melt the ice and reduce its salinity. Potatoes are mashed. In the cooking process, add a little olive oil, chopped parsley, minced garlic. This is one of the delicious dishes in Croatia you should try.

croatia travel news

Pašticada (stewed beef)

Stewed beef with special sauce is a famous dish in Dalmatia, it requires a long and meticulous processing process. Premium beef marinated with lots of spices and a variety of vegetables then left overnight to infuse then cooked with grilled bacon, coriander root, onion, nutmeg, tomato paste, prunes and stewed up to 5 hours, depending on the type of meat. The dish is often served on important occasions such as weddings, it is served with gnocchi or pasta.

croatia travel news

Other must-try dishes include:

  • Soparnik – vegetarian pancake
  • Risotto – mixed rice with stewed meat
  • Black risotto
  • Gulaš – stewed beef soup
  • Zagrebački odrezak – veal steak stuffed with ham
  • Malvazija & Teran – 2 favorite Croatian wines

11hungarian goulash soup (1)

The country is also a major wine producer, with the Peljesac peninsula famous for its red wines, and eastern Slavonia and Istria known for its white wines.

In terms of drinks, you can enjoy Italian-style kava (also known as milk coffee). In addition, pivo and white wine, red wine are also great drinks you should not miss when visiting this country.

croatia travel news

In addition, I would also like to suggest some good restaurants in Croatia:

  • Zagreb: Batak Grill Cvjetni , Boban , Vinodol, Rougemarin City, Mundoaka Street Food.
  • Dubrovnik: Nautika , Above 5 Rooftop, Trattoria Capriccio, Panorama, Revelin

Croatia travel blog: Where to stay?

Zagreb: Because we only stayed for one night, we booked the one near the train station and central bus station. HI Hostel Zagreb ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) has a private room for 2 people, but the price is cheap 15 € / room, with deposit luggage service after check out. However, the rooms here looks a bit old and the facilities are quite rundown.

Dubrovnik: We rent a room on Airbnb, 5 minutes walk from Old Town but good, cheap, the owner is super nice and even lets us send our belongings for 8 hours after checking out.

If you have good financial conditions, you should stay in Old Town to feel lifestlye and local life here, although the roads are steep with many stairs and most importantly, the price is super expensive.

Although we visited Dubrovnik in not the tourist season, the average price for an apartment here is already $60. There is a good hostel called Angelina Old Town ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) but the price is also similar.

You can buy items such as traditional handicrafts, jewelry, glassware, wood carvings, lavender bags or local specialties, wines, and olive oil as gifts for your loved ones, friends after the trip to Croatia. Most of the above items are sold in shops in Zagreb. But you should buy souvenirs at traditional fairs or festivals to save a lot of money.

Croatia blog: Travel costs

Most transactions in Croatia in Kuna, EUR 1 ~ 7.5 Kuna. In some tourist destinations like Dubrovnik, there are still some places that accept € . We exchanged money at home, so we didn’t exchange it here.

In general, travel costs in Croatia are cheaper than in some other European countries. Only in Dubrovnik, the cost is a little more expensive. You can refer to the total cost of traveling to Croatia for 4D3N as follows (price will be for 1 person and Kuna currency):

Croatia blog: Before you go

  • Currency: Croatia uses the Kuna, abbreviated as KN, 1 euro for 7.5 kuna. Withdrawal rates from Croatian ATMs are very high, sometimes a fee of 10-13% is deducted. Therefore, you should use cash in euros and then exchange to kuna or use a card when make payments. When staying in a hotel or eating in a restaurant, if the staff asks if you want to swipe a card to charge in Kuna or Euro, it is more beneficial to charge in kuna.
  • Language: Croatians can speak many languages, such as Croatian, Italian, and English as their mother tongues. Many people speak multiple languages fluently.
  • Shopping: When buying at the flea market, you should bargain. If shopping in shopping malls, you should ask the seller for an invoice and should check cash back or card balance.
  • Safety: Croatia is a safe country for travelers. However, the friendliness of the people on the street cannot be called perfect. During my travels to many cities in Croatia, I have noticed that the more touristy a place is, the less friendly it is, the bus driver is sometimes very rude.

Croatia’s tourist pearl Dubrovnik seeks to reclaim city for locals

Thursday, 28 Mar 2024

Dubrovnik, located on the Adriatic’s rocky coastline, is a popular stop-off point for holiday cruises. — Pixabay

Croatia’s historic city of Dubrovnik aims to lure back locals priced out by high tourist prices with a plan next month that includes banning new private rental permits, following the example of other popular destinations across Europe.

Dubrovnik, famed for its Baroque churches, Renaissance palaces and spectacular location on the Adriatic’s rocky coastline is a stop-off point for holiday cruises and attracts millions of global visitors that bring in much-needed revenues to the nation’s economy.

But the success of the Unesco World Heritage Site has come at a price. Tourists clog the narrow streets and push up rents. Locals occupy just 30% of the Old Town’s (Dubrovnik) accommodation.

Before the break-up of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, and Croatia’s independence war, some 5,000 residents lived there. Today, 1,200 remain.

“Young people will depart us, they will leave to some other places because it will be impossible to live in Dubrovnik,” said Mayor Mato Frankovic.

The city council is expected in April to pass a regulation banning new rental permits in the Old Town and its surrounding area, Frankovic said. The move is part of the city’s obligation to meet certain Unesco rules, he said.

The city has already begun buying apartments that will be offered to young families under a 10-year lease, and will ban the short-term lease of flats in large apartment buildings. In 2018, it limited the number of tourists from cruises to 4,000 at a time.

“We shall protect the town’s historic foundations and enable the people to live and spend time there,” Frankovic said.

Other European authorities are also seeking to reclaim cities for local inhabitants. Portugal, for instance, has been acting to lower housing prices.

In Dubrovnik, not everyone agrees on the need for change.

Vedran Miovic, of the Hedera Estate agency that manages some 150 units in Dubrovnik, says private accommodation is “much better for the community” compared with big hotels and resorts, which he said only benefited big foreign funds.

Old Town resident Marija Trojenovic, however, welcomed the plans.

“Bring back people to the town because people make the town,” she said. – Reuters

Why Go To Dubrovnik

Ever wanted a gorgeous seaside fortress of your own? Picture it: Huge stone walls keeping the lapping sea at bay, while you dine in the safety of your Baroque palace. You can come close to this fantasy with a visit to Dubrovnik, which is straight out of a dream, or if you are a "Game of Thrones" fan, right out of the wildly popular TV series. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, Dubrovnik is surrounded by gorgeous medieval ramparts that have been preserved in their original form and are one of the city's main attractions.

Often called the Pearl of the Adriatic, this small city on the Dalmatian coast has it all. Travelers from all over the world flock here to experience the rich history preserved in the monuments and buildings, to taste the fantastic local cuisine, to take a few fun daytrips and to bask in the warm waters spilling onto pebble beaches. Snapshots won't do: You have to be here yourself to see what all the fuss is about.

Dubrovnik Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Dubrovnik is September and October, when temperatures aren't stifling hot yet most of the cruise ships have abandoned the port. The water remains warm for these two months, so it's a great time to dip into the sea rather than your savings. The peak season, summer, has arguably the nicest weather with average high temperatures fluttering around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. But the small city struggles to meet the demand of the large visitor influx. Correspondently, prices soar. Prices go down from October through April, but so will the temperatures and the beach appeal.

Weather in Dubrovnik

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

  • What does "Dubrovnik" mean? The founders named this city after " dubrava ," meaning "grove," for the thick cluster of trees that used to sprout from the town. Centuries of logging for ship-building has created a semi-desert environment. However, you can still find a dense forest on nearby  Lokrum Island .
  • Who built this lovely city? That's a tough one. There were multiple forces at work as different international bodies (like the Byzantine Empire, Venice and France) ruled the city. Let's give credit to the Croatians who have had to endure centuries of foreign rulers.
  • How do I communicate here? Despite its long history of international rule, you'll now find that nearly everyone speaks Croatian and English in  Old Town .

How to Save Money in Dubrovnik

  • Pack your lunch  Although the picturesque cafes will beckon to you, you can save a bit of cash by packing your lunch and taking a picnic to the beach. You can purchase goodies from the local bakeries and open-air markets.
  • Consider a Dubrovnik Card By purchasing this card , you'll enjoy free admission to several of the city's top sights , including the city walls , the Rector's Palace and the Franciscan Monastery . Passes can be purchased in one-, three- and seven-day increments.
  • Stay outside of town  We know that you've come here to enjoy Dubrovnik's delights, but taking a couple of daytrips into town might be all you need. Then, you can stay along the Dalmatian shores and enjoy fewer visitors and lower prices. The suburb of Lapad Bay is a great nearby option, but the farther away, the more you save.

Culture & Customs

The official language in Croatia is Croatian, but many people in Dubrovnik, especially those in the tourist industry and younger Croatians, speak English. To be polite and friendly, it's a good idea to learn a few basics, such as the common greeting: "good day," dobar dan . Other key phrases include "please," molim and "thank you," hvala . Because of the complex relationship between Croatia and Serbia, it's wise to avoid speaking about Croatia and Serbia relations when chatting with locals.

The currency in Dubrovnik is the Croatian kuna (HRK). One U.S. dollar is equal to about 6.75 kuna. Since the exchange rate fluctuates, you'll want to  check it before you travel . You can exchange currency at the airport, but you might find a better exchange rate in town. Usually, your best bet is to use your ATM card to withdraw money and it's even better if you have one that doesn't charge fees for withdrawing money overseas.

When it comes to tipping, there's no standard amount and it isn't required, but generally, most service staff – from restaurant servers to taxi drivers – will appreciate at least a symbolic amount, especially as wages aren't too high in Croatia. Rounding up your bill or leaving a 10% tip on a restaurant bill is considered generous.

On the whole, Dubrovnik is considered a very safe vacation destination. But, as in any busy city, be wary of potential pickpockets that might target tourists.

What to Eat

Naturally, a city on the sea is going to serve a lot of seafood and the region's chefs love to showcase the fresh catches of the day. Mussels, tuna, squid ink risotto and more are staples at many restaurants. Other local specialties include oysters from Mali Ston (a village on Croatia's coast), smoked ham, cheese soaked in oil, octopus salad, zelena menestra (smoked salted pork and cabbage stew), sporchi macaroni (stewed veal chunks and spices), fried sprats and grilled sardines. The best-known wines of the Dubrovnik region include reds from the Pelješac Peninsula and for whites, Pošip from Korcula. Try them all in a flight at D'vino , a popular wine bar in the Old City.

For Mediterranean dishes with a side of unforgettable views, consider making a reservation at the Above 5 Rooftop Restaurant at the Hotel Stari Grad. You'll pay a pretty penny for a table, but according to recent visitors, the views and the food are worth it. For an equally atmospheric meal that's heavy on seafood, head to Proto , which sits in the heart of old town. If you're on a tight budget but still itching to try some local seafood, Barba earns rave reviews for its "gourmet fast food" (think: octopus burgers). And when you need a break from the Dalmatian diet, consider Azur , which describes its "CroAsian" menu as Mediterranean with an Asian twist.

Getting Around Dubrovnik

The best way to get around Dubrovnik is on foot. In fact, the entire historic center is only open to pedestrians. To reach the city, many travelers fly into Dubrovnik Airport (DBV), located less than 15 miles southeast of the city. To get to Dubrovnik from the airport, travelers can rent a car, take a taxi or hop on a shuttle bus, which costs 55 kuna (about $8).

If you're arriving to Dubrovnik via cruise ship, you can take a taxi from the port to the Old City for about 70 kuna (around $10.50) or reach the area by bus. The main bus station is located at the port. Bus tickets cost between 12 and 15 kuna (about $1.50 to $2.25), depending on if you purchase tickets on the bus or at a kiosk.

Entry & Exit Requirements

For U.S. citizens entering Croatia, a passport that is valid for at least three months beyond the travel departure date is required. U.S. citizens do not need a visa unless they plan on staying longer than 90 days. Visit the U.S. State Department's  website  for more information on entry and exit requirements.

Gaining popularity in recent years, Dubrovnik is considered one of the Best Places to Visit in Eastern Europe .

Croatia Airlines 2024 Split Flights to See Welcome Expansion

Lauren Simmonds

March 22, 2024

croatia airlines 2024 split

March the 23rd, 2024 – Croatia Airlines 2024 Split flights are set to expand – much to the delight of the resident population and tourists visiting Croatia’s second largest city.

Croatia Airlines has been announcing the expansion of its flight network for some time now, but the primary focus of said announcements has been on Zagreb Airport. It seems that trend is spreading down to Dalmatia as the summer weather gradually approaches.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Croatia Airlines is expanding its network of regular international flights from Split to various different European destinations in this year’s summer flight schedule, for the third year in a row.

Direct flights from Split to the Turkish capital of Istanbul are also a new introduction. They’ll fly three times a week – on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, in the period from May the 7th to mid-October 2024. This enables Croatia Airlines to provide even better air connections between Split and international destinations. Return air tickets are available to passengers on this line at a price starting at 179 euros.

Looking further into the Croatia Airlines 2024 Split flight expansion, seasonal flights from Split to Oslo and Split to Skoplje, which were introduced last year, have been re-planned, as have the seasonal flights to Amsterdam, Bucharest, Dublin, Milan and Stockholm, which were introduced back in 2022.

This means that during this upcoming tourist season, Split Airport will be directly connected with 21 international destinations, i.e. 22 airports (Amsterdam, Athens, Vienna, Berlin, Bucharest, Dublin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Copenhagen, London Gatwick and London Heathrow, Lyon, Milan, Munich, Oslo, Paris, Prague, Rome, Skopje, Stockholm and Zurich).

International flights approach pre-Covid levels with new and expanded routes

Planes are parked at Incheon International Airport. [NEWS1]

Korea's international flights are projected to reach 98 percent of pre-Covid levels during this summer, with new routes established between Incheon and Croatia's Zagreb and Australia's Melbourne.

The number of international flights will increase to 4,528 per week on 231 routes between domestic airports this summer from March 31 to Oct. 26, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced Thursday. This is up by 520 flights per week compared to last year's summer season,

This summer's new or resumed routes are flights from Incheon to Zagreb in Croatia, Melbourne in Australia and Mexico City in Mexico. Additional routes from Korea's regional airports include Gimhae in South Gyeongsang to Bohol in the Philippines, Daegu to Zhangjiajie in China, Muan in South Jeolla to Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia, and Jeju to Xian in China.

Flight frequency expanded from last winter on routes including Poland, which increased from five to seven times a week, and the United Arab Emirates, rising from 21 to 28 times a week. These expansions came after airlines were granted widened traffic rights last year.

In addition, flights to the United States have increased from 193 to 232 times a week, while those to Europe have risen from 114 to 139 times a week.

"Just as we've recently expanded traffic rights to Indonesia, Mongolia and Kazakhstan, we intend to keep broadening our international routes to enhance citizens' travel convenience and support businesses," a ministry official said.

Labour crunch forces Croatia to open doors to Asian workforce

Durga Phuyal had hoped to start anew when she landed in Croatia, but the Nepali migrant faced an uphill battle to adjust to life in the Balkan country.

Phuyal is among the tens of thousands of migrants who have flocked to Croatia from as far afield as Asia, as the small EU country desperately tries to overcome a chronic labour shortage.

Traditionally reliant on seasonal workers from Balkan neighbours, Croatia is increasingly counting on labourers from Nepal, India, the Philippines and elsewhere to bridge the gap.

Mass emigration and a shrinking population has created tens of thousands of vacant positions in construction and the service industry in the tourism-dependent country, famous for its picturesque beaches along the Adriatic sea.

But not everyone has put out the welcome mat, with migrants facing cramped and expensive housing, and occasional anti-immigrant rhetoric that has spiked ahead of elections.

In Nepal, Phuyal paid 7,000 euros in total for the various fees, documents and travel expenses before landing Croatia.

But after barely a month after arriving, she had lost her job and was offered no assistance by the agency that helped hire her.

"It was very difficult," the 27-year-old said of the two-month ordeal.

"I had no job, no accommodation, no food."

The country provided nearly 120,000 non-EU nationals with work permits in 2023, a 40 percent jump over the figure from the previous year.

But in the run-up to general elections in April, right-wing parties have accused migrants of threatening the country's security and stealing jobs from Croatians.

Migrants have also been regularly pilloried online, with social media users mocking them for gathering during New Year's festivities in Zagreb, calling the celebrations "Advent in Kathmandu" and "Nepali New Year".

Ethnic Croats comprise more than 90 percent of Croatia's population -- nearly 80 percent of whom are Roman Catholics -- making it one of the more homogeneous societies in Europe.

Language barriers along with conservative attitudes toward outsiders have presented myriad obstacles to welcoming in the new labour force.

"Unlike countries that throughout their history had contacts with diverse cultures -- like France or Britain -- Croatia is facing for the first time a situation where it is encountering very different groups," said Dragan Bagic, a sociologist at the University of Zagreb.

- Not 'mentally' ready -

According to forecasts by the Croatian Employers' Association, the country of just 3.8 million could need as many as 500,000 foreign workers by the end of the decade.

Newly arrived migrants have been most vulnerable during their search for housing, according to experts.

An investigation in a local newspaper in the capital Zagreb said 32 foreign workers were found living in a cramped 83-square-metre (893-square-foot) apartment in the city.

Classified advertisements aimed at foreign workers typically offer tiny apartments with nearly a dozen beds, priced at 200 euros ($216) per person.

A Nepali workers representative said their wages in Croatia range between 560 and 1,000 euros per month.

To meet the challenge, the Croatian government is preparing to amend the law on foreigners to better regulate accommodation, provide language classes and oversee the growing number of temporary employment agencies.

Arcely Bhing, a 48-year-old Filipina who works at a printing company, said Croatia was not "physically or mentally" ready for this wave of immigration.

Attending mass in English every Sunday in Zagreb, where she is joined by dozens of other Filipinos, has helped fight homesickness.

"It's a big thing for us Filipinos because we are also a Catholic country, most of us go to church," she said.

Andjelko Katanec, a priest at the Saint-Blaise church that has been holding mass in English since 2019, said integrating into Croatian society was a "big challenge" for migrants.

"They risk being isolated outside work," he said.

"The history of mankind is the history of migrations," Katanec said.

"We have to organise better ... to welcome the immigrants better, offer them more opportunities and better conditions."

- 'Good workers' -

Many migrants came to financially support their families back home and often use Croatia as a starting point in Europe with an eye toward settling elsewhere.

Denson D'Cruz, who migrated from Kerala, India, said he chose Croatia because it is part of Europe's Schengen passport-free travel area.

The 30-year-old arrived last year to work as a mechanic but now runs his own import-export company.

He said he hopes to stay in Croatia for the foreseeable future because of its "climate and people who are friendly and speak English".

While some have sought to exploit the new arrivals, others have worked to help them find their footing.

After falling on hard times, Phuyal eventually found work at a temp agency  and hopes to begin work in a beauty salon soon.

"Nepalis are very good workers, adjustable, and want to learn quickly," said the agency's owner, Ruzica Kerepcic.

J.J. McCarthy second overall? + QB class red flags, Dak Prescott on the open market | Inside Coverage

Jason Fitz is joined by Senior NFL Reporters Charles Robinson and Jori Epstein to go behind the scenes on the latest rumors and news around the NFL. The trio start with takeaways from the NFL owner's meetings as Jori was on the ground in Orlando. The hosts discuss the fallout of the new kickoff rule (are rosters going to change because of it?), the two Christmas Day games and what the heck Jerry Jones was doodling in his notebook. Next, it's time to pull out the crystal ball as the hosts attempt to look into the future for some key quarterbacks, starting with Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy's draft stock has been skyrocketing lately as some rumors emerged that he could go as high as second overall. Charles gives his thoughts and what he's hearing from GMs around the league before moving onto Brock Purdy and whether San Francisco will be willing to pay him when the time comes. Charles dives deeper into the 2024 quarterback class and why every prospect has a massive red flag, and Jori gives us the latest on the Dak Prescott contract negotiations, which seem to be heading in the wrong direction. All signs are pointing towards Dak hitting free agency next offseason. Finally, Fitz wraps things up by asking about Deion Sanders' comments about choosing where his sons get drafted and whether or not player empowerment could be ascending to a new level with the emergence of NIL.

Renew your passport before this time to save money

Woman backpacker holding passport and map with suitcase standing at check in baggage at airport terminal, traveler concept

The ideal time for Brits to renew their passport to save money is a lot sooner than you might think.

So if you have plans to jet off somewhere nice this year, get your renewal in ASAP and give yourself more cash to spend on your holidays.

Experts at Travel Supermarket crunched the numbers for both adult and child passports ahead of the application fee increasing next month.

From April you’ll have pay to £88.50 for adults and £57.50 for children, compared to £82.50 for adults and £53.50 for children before the price hike.

The change comes into effect from April 11, with adults whose documents expire before December 17 and children whose run out by August 14 have advised to renew now to beat the increases.

After that point, it’s more cost-effective to wait until next year – even with the increased fees – as any time remaining on your current passport’s validity isn’t added to the new one’s 10-year validity, and you could be throwing money away by jumping the gun.

What is the 10-year passport rule?

Before Brexit , the UK Passport Office’s policy was that passport holders that had time left on their existing documents could effectively transfer the balance to a new one.

So, if a document had three months remaining, those three months could be added to a new passport.

Under these rules, up to nine months could be carried over to a new passport, bringing the total for updated 10-year passports to 10 years and nine months.

However, as a result of this rule, data from the Home Office suggests that up to 32 million people could have passports that are now over 10 years old – which EU nations do not accept.

These rules also apply in the wider Schengen Area, including in Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, though UK visitors entering Ireland aren’t impacted.

Meanwhile, the cost of a postal application for a standard passport has risen by £7 for adults to £100. For children, a postal application will now cost £69, up from £64.

Costs are even higher if applying from overseas, where an online application will rise to £101.00 for adults and £65.50 for children. If you want to do a postal application from abroad, it will cost £112.50 for adults and £77.00 for children.

Every little helps when it comes to passports, especially since there is currently a lot of confusion among those with older red ones.

Before the UK left the EU, passport holders were able to transfer up to nine months from an old passport over to a new one, including on 10-year passports.

British Passport

But if carrying this over has meant that your passport is now over 10 years old, you could find yourself unable to cross the border.

Red passports are still valid, however you’ll need to double check the expiry date. Due to what’s known as the ‘six-month validity rule’ , a number of Brits using documents issued before Brexit run the risk being refused entry to certain countries as a result.

Many countries require your passport to be valid for  another six months  before you leave for international travel – another rule that’s been slipping countless Brits up post-Brexit.

It’s worth double checking before you book, as it could mean a wasted trip to the airport and a lot of wasted money.

How long does it take to renew a passport?

You’ll typically receive your new passport within three weeks, according to Gov UK, but don’t forget that the processing time starts from when your documents are received – not sent off.

It can also take longer if the Passport Office decides that they need more information about you.

If you need a passport more urgently, you can use a Fast Track service, although you’ll have to pay a premium.

The one-week Fast Track costs £155 for adults and £126 for children, and you need to attend an in-person appointment at a passport office.

In a real pinch, the Premium one-day service costs £193.50 for adults, butcan’t be used to renew children’s passports or for first-time applicants.
