3 days - Tambopata Amazon Jungle

This place was great, very rustic but cute huts. We really enjoyed the common area as that’s where we would chill out and have some drinks in the afternoon. The food and people were great, our guide Franklin was amazing, if you go I highly recommend him!!

Macaw clay lick and sandoval lake 5D/4N Tour

Macaw clay lick and sandoval lake 5D/4N

It was a great experience overall. The guides were good. On the 5 day, it's quite an interruption to switch locations - I wonder if this could be made smoother. There is also the issue of illegal mining right alongside the Tambopata lodge, and the lodge is deforesting land itself for a banana plantation - we'd hope there would be ways to resolve this, and really steer the lodge into being a force for good in the environment. It would be ideal to add a few extra clothes lines for guests.

Machu Picchu Jungle Trek 4D/3N (Biking Only) Tour

Machu Picchu Jungle Trek 4D/3N (Biking Only)

The Jungle Trek was completely incredible. Arguably this is a better way to reach the Machu Picchu point and it’s nothing I could have imagined! There was mountain biking, rafting, zip lining it was a lot of fun. Every detail was taken care of. Fortunately the groups were small, so we were able to enjoy the trail in a better way. The other companies have more than 15 people so it’s less friendly. Our guide was top level. He is a kind person, also very funny! Thank you and keep up the great work!

I always wanted to do zipline activity and was very fond of white water rafting. Both my wishes came true and honestly, I had the best experience of these activities through Bamba experience. They really did so well right from the planning stage till the execution. They were successful enough to make my tour exciting and full of adventures. I am glad that I chose Bamba experience. Thumbs up to their amazing service.

7-Day Inca Jungle Trek Including Biking, Inca trail, Rafting, Zipline

We had a group of 8 people doing to 7D/6N tour. The 7 day jungle trek was totally epic and I would highly recommend this tour if you are seeking adventure and new experiences. This trek has the perfect mix of adrenaline culture and fun. and it is also cheaper than other treks offered in Cusco. So if you want to have a great adventure with a lot of adrenaline and especially ending in Machu picchu, do this trek. We learned about the history and culture of Peru while hiking/biking/zip-lining/whitewater rafting to some amazing views! All hotels and food are included. the Peruvian cuisine was amazing! Highly recommend!

Peru Jungle Tour Reviews

This trip was truly the trip of a lifetime. Jesus really submerges you into the Peruvian culture and the three days you’re there, you are nonstop with activities. Our guide was so knowledgeable and he made the trip. His family grew up in the rainforest so he was able to tell you the history about most things there (the families, the foods, the animals etc). We went during rainy season, and still had a wonderful time. If you’re looking for adventure, meeting wonderful people, and being in nature - this trip is for you!
Had a great experience and program (although they changed the order compared to what was shown). My guides were really helpful and spoke English really well (I had Fernando and Luiz). I would recommend staying as long as possible because the weather conditions may not be ideal and as with nature, you need patience and luck in order to see wildlife.
We booked this trip quite long in advance because we were looking to do something that was not just a plain hike but included a lot of once-in-a-lifetime activities. This absolutely did that. Arriving in Cusco we stayed at Milhouse hostel (brilliant) and had a very informative pre-departure meeting the night before we left on our trek. We were 5 people and a guide which made it really wonderful and personal. The guide was able to give us all such great information. THE GUIDE Percy is probably the best guide in Peru :) His knowledge of the local culture and mountains and jungle are amaaazing. He grew up in Machu Picchu/ Aguas Calientes. You cannot ask for anyone better. He had such a great skill for always taking into account where our stamina levels were and what we were up for. THE ACTIVITIES Riding a bike for about 50km down a winding mountain road sounded like the least "scary" of all our activities but I have to say it was quite hectic for me. A bit scary but in a good way. The views are stunning and its an amazing experience but please be safe on those roads. We could not do the white water rafting unfortunately since the river was too high. I really appreciated the company being honest and rather cancelling an activity (and refunding us) rather than doing something which is not safe. The zip lining was amaaaaaazing. I read some pretty scary reviews before the time but this was wonderful. We felt 1000% safe. No crowds, no long lines, no time waiting around between zip lines. The suspension bridge was such a thrill as well. The hot springs were absolutely wonderful. Such a special place with the clearest water and spectacular views. Sitting around afterwards gazing at the mountains and enjoying a few cervezas was one of the highlights of our week. THE ACCOMMODATION They prepare you for "no Wi-Fi and almost no hot water." We had fantastic Wi-Fi every night at our hostels and great hot showers. The rooms are clean and mostly very spacious. The staff is absolutely wonderful. Accommodation was way above our expectations. THE FOOD The food was great. Mostly 3 course meals in local restaurants which feels like you are eating in a long-lost family member's dining room. Always enough bread, generally followed by a delicious soup, a main and sometimes a dessert. Accompanied by juice and coca leaf tea. Beer and softdrinks for your own account. THE GUIDE Did I mention how awesome our guide was. MACHU PICCHU Our last day on Machu Picchu was exactly worth all the hype. That place is amazing. Mind boggling. Great views. Amazing history. So much mystery and ambience. MY TOP TIPS 1. Mosquito repellent. Tons of it. Our guide warned us before the time and our group did not have more than a few bites but we passed other groups who were pretty much walking around as mosquito-buffets. 2. Sunscreen. Wear it. Lots of it. Tons of it. 3. Pack light. Our backpacks were too heavy because I didn't listen ;) Don't do it to yourself. Pack light and then take out a few more things. 4. Learn all you can. Eat local. Drink the local beer. Walk around in the local markets. Ask tons of questions. Learn a bit of Spanish so you can great people, thank people and ask a few basic questions. (Where? How much? How many?) FINALLY The hiking on the 2nd day was a bit tougher than we expected but other than that the physical impact is really not hectic. Do this trek if you want to see Peru from a whole new perspective.

How to Visit Amazon Jungle Peru – Everything You Need to Know

The Amazon Rainforest, often called the Amazon Jungle, is the largest rainforest on Earth.

It spans multiple countries in South America, including Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.

Hi, we’re Rach & Marty!

We’ve visited every country in the world and want to help you get the most out of your travels!

Whether you need an expertly planned itinerary , some experienced hints and tips , or just craving a delicious food adventure , we’ve got you covered!

Visiting the Amazon Jungle had been on our bucket list for quite some time, so after spending the best 2 days in Lima , we arranged a side trip to the Amazon Jungle Peru.

To help you plan a visit to the Amazon, I’ve compiled this guide that includes our best travel tips, prices and details on visiting the Amazon Jungle in Peru.

Table of Contents

The Best Time to Go

Exploring the Amazon Rainforest is a year-round possibility, given its consistent weather conditions throughout the seasons. Anticipate warm, rainy, and humid weather, regardless of the time of year.

The wet season spans from January to June, featuring temperatures ranging from 23 to 30ºC (73 to 86ºF). Daily showers are a common occurrence, sometimes with substantial intensity.

wet weather raincoat amazon jungle peru

However, it’s important to note that the higher humidity during this period results in more mosquitoes.

The dry season, from July to December, includes the latter half of the year. During this period, temperatures average around 26 to 40ºC (78 to 104ºF). While there is less rain, occasional heavy showers can still occur. Reduced rainfall results in a drier atmosphere in the jungle and lower river levels.

This creates advantageous conditions for exploration on foot and provides an excellent chance to spot caimans as they contend for diminished food supplies.

The most popular time to visit the Amazon is in July and August. The height of water in the jungle is reasonable, and you have a higher chance of spotting more wildlife.

Where to Go And How to Get There

Two notable areas in the Peruvian Amazon jungle are popular for ecotourism and wildlife experiences.

  • Iquitos, the largest city along the Amazon River in the Peru jungle, is the northern gateway to the Peruvian Amazon basin.
  • Puerto Maldonado is a city in southeastern Peru in the Madre de Dios region, part of the Amazon rainforest. It serves as a gateway to the Tambopata and Manu National Reserves, two of the most biodiverse areas in the Amazon rainforest.

When planning your journey, there’s no rule on choosing the best area of the Amazon to visit, but you should consider your itinerary.

Marty Madre de Dios River Peru Amazon

For instance, diverting to Iquitos might be impractical if you travel to Cusco or Lima. Instead, destinations like Manu National Park or Puerto Maldonado, the entry point to the Amazon rainforest, are closer and logistically make sense.

You can book a flight to Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado from Lima or Cusco. You can also take a bus from Cusco to reach these cities to begin your Amazon Jungle experience; this is the most affordable option.

While visiting Lima, we booked this 3 Day Jungle Tour to explore the Tambopata National Reserve.

We started our Amazon Jungle trip by booking a flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado on Skyscanner and found the price of flights to be very reasonable.

The Perfect Itinerary for 2 Days in Lima

How Many Days Do You Need in the Amazon Jungle Peru

We’d recommend setting aside a minimum of three days to visit the Amazon Jungle in Peru.

In this timeframe, you can embark on several excursions that provide a glimpse into the captivating offerings of this region.

The most popular Amazon Jungle packages are 3 or 4 nights

Book A Tour or Travel Independently

We usually travel independently and book logistics as we go; however, after crunching numbers and working out the logistics of getting around in the Amazon Jungle in Peru, we found that it was much easier and more economical for us to book a packaged tour.

There are many tour operators to choose from online. After comparing many options, we decided to book this 3 Day/2 Night Amazon Jungle trip as it’s a Peruvian-owned company with excellent reviews from past guests.

For this complete package, including airport transfers, 2 nights’ accommodation in a bungalow Garden Lodge (with private ensuite facilities), all meals, drinking water, activities and a local guide, we paid approximately USD 350 per person, as we booked a nicer room with private facilities.

Where To Stay

Amazon Garden Lodge bungalow

The overall accommodation style in the Amazon Jungle Peru is typically jungle lodges in various regions.

The choice is up to you whether you opt for a remarkably luxurious or more basic option. You can expect comfortable accommodations in these lodges, usually in twin-share or double cabins with attached ensuite bathrooms.

It’s important to remember that your lodge is in a remote location, so electricity may only be available for specific hours during the day. This was the case with our lodge, so whenever electricity was available, take the opportunity to charge your phone, cameras etc.

The rooms have mosquito nets and fans to ensure a cool and protected night’s sleep.

jungle tour peru

You may choose a bungalow accommodation with shared bathroom facilities for those travelling on a budget.

Most of the lodges are within a 1-1.5 hour boat ride from Puerto Maldonado Boat Pier.

Accommodation providers usually offer all-inclusive packages that include transfers from Puerto Maldonado airport, accommodation, all meals, and several daily excursions.

Amazon Jungle Lodges in Peru

Numerous jungle lodges are situated along the river, ranging from inexpensive ones with very basic amenities to more stylish lodges with comfortable bungalows.

Here are my top picks for Amazon jungle lodges for varying budgets:

BUDGET: Hacienda Herrera Tambopata – Offering garden views, this property provides accommodation, a garden and a terrace. Pick up and drop off from airport or bus station is provided for free, has to contact property for arrengments. Is a 20 min boat ride from El Triunfo Port to the lodge.

MID-RANGE: Amazon Planet – A true ecolodge within a protected area surrounded by rainforest and wild animals in their natural habitat. Free airport transfers, river transfers, all meals are included. Jungle excursions and adventure activities in the area such as treking, biking, fishing, and boat rides can be arranged.

Full program itineraries are available for an add-on rate. The rooms in Amazon Planet feature private bathrooms and terraces. Breakfast is served daily. The on-site restaurant offers a daily menu and can cater to special diets upon request.

LUXURY: Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica – Located in the Peru Amazon Jungle, this hotel features tours to the rainforest, a massage spa overlooking the Madre de Dios forest and rooms with hammocks and balconies. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in the rates.

There are eco-friendly bathroom amenities and private bathrooms. The hotel is a 45-minute boat ride from Puerto Maldonado. Cusco is a 25-minute flight away.

What you can see in the amazon jungle in peru.

The Amazon jungle in Peru is like a vast garden with many plants. You’ll find towering trees, like the Ceiba and Kapok, that stand really tall. Some trees, like the rubber tree, have been essential for making rubber.

There are plants that people have used for medicine for a long time, like the Cinchona tree, which helps treat malaria, and the Cat’s Claw, which indigenous communities have used traditionally.

On the trees, you’ll see colourful plants called bromeliads and orchids. Palms, like the Açaí and Assai, give us tasty fruits.

Vines and climbers, such as the vanilla orchid and passionflower, make the forest look even more beautiful. All these plants create a rich and amazing environment in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest.

monkey island Amazon Jungle Peru

The most commonly seen animals in the Amazon jungle are monkeys (squirrel monkeys and howler monkeys), caimans, sloths, frogs, tarantulas, piranhas, and birds such as herons, and the hoatzin (stink bird).

If you’re fortunate, you may see the endangered giant otter.

Of course, the frequency and proximity of wildlife sightings often depend on luck when exploring the Amazon Jungle.

Nonetheless, it remains a fantastic destination with ample opportunities to encounter and observe various forms of wildlife.

Discover Lake Sandoval: Visit Lake Sandoval, which is located in the Tambopata National Reserve. Hike 3 km through the park to reach the shores of Lake Sandoval.

What to Pack for Amazon Jungle in Peru

We recommend packing some lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing, and you will need a waterproof jacket (or poncho ); plus, it’s worth considering waterproof pants .

TIP: Dress in light, neutral colours to avoid mosquitoes.

Trousers and long sleeves are necessary when taking jungle walks to protect yourself from mosquitoes and spikey plants.

Add the following items to your packing list:

  • A head torch for night walks through the jungle.
  • Binoculars for a closer look at the Amazon wildlife.
  • A good power bank to charge your electronics, as electricity is limited.
  • Mosquito repellent is essential whether you travel in the wet or dry season.
  • Practical walking or trekking shoes , although rubber gumboots are usually provided.
  • A wide-brimmed hat to protect your head from the sun during river cruises.
  • Sunscreen – it gets scorching in the Amazon Jungle.
  • A reusable water bottle to keep hydrated. Your accommodation provider will provide drinking water during your stay.
  • A good book – View our recommendations for great travel books .

And to make the most of your visit, we recommend focusing on high wildlife areas. These select tours are inclusive of ground transfers, accommodation, guided tours and meals, so you can focus on the breathtaking forest.

And here’s a little more information about each of the tours above, complete with view previews to give you a sense of what to expect on your Amazon adventure .

The Tahuayo Lodge Tour

An Amazon Rainforest tour from the Tahuayo Lodge provides a fantastic adventure into the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve. This is a wildlife-rich reserve in the northern Amazon Rainforest about 150 km from the rainforest city of Iquitos in north Peru.

Emerald Tree Boa - Amazon Jungle Adventure Tours In Peru

From the Tahuayo Lodge , you are assigned a private Amazon guide and have a custom itinerary, which means you can focus on your interests, such as photography, bird watching, Amazonian plants, monkeys, canoeing, hiking, or a general experience.

To maximize your adventure, you can choose to camp in the rainforest and spend a night under the stars. This is a great option for a closer experience of Amazonia and hearing the sounds of an Amazonian night is sure to provide some fond memories.

Tahuayo Lodge

For those of you looking for even more adventure, as the Tahuayo Lodge started as one of the first adventure camping experiences in Amazonia you also have an option of an Amazon survival course. Over one or two nights you will head out to learn survival and how to live off the surrounding rainforest. Note this has a small additional rate.

Black Caiman, Tahuayo Lodge, Iquitos, Peru

On the standard experience of the Amazon Rainforest, you can enjoy visiting two different lodges. The recommended time for a tour here is 8 days where you can tour the jungle in a variety of ways. On tours of 6 days or more, you can also visit the Tahuayo Amazon Research Center, which is located in more pristine rainforest.

From the Amazon Research Center, you can tour the 1,000 acre primate research grid where researchers are studying Amazonian monkeys, which makes it easier to watch these fantastic animals displaying normal behaviors.

The Tahuayo Lodge also has the largest canopy zipline system in Amazonia adding to the adventure. Not only providing an exhilarating experience, the canopy towers holding up the zipline are great places to look out over the canopy. A family of giant otters have recently taken up residence near the lodge and manatees were just released into the reserve with the help of Tahuayo Lodge staff.

The Tambopata Research Center Tour

Jaguar - Amazon Jungle Adventure Tours In Peru

One of the most remote lodges in Amazonia, if your ideal Amazon Rainforest adventure includes some more activities than tours of the wildlife and environment but a little less adventure than a private Amazon guide, canopy zipline, and Amazon Rainforest survival course as offered at the Tahuayo Lodge, we recommend the Tambopata Research Center .

Tambopata Research Center

This is another deep Amazon Rainforest lodge positioned in the center of the highly diverse Tambopata National Reserve. Tambopata is a fraction of one of the largest protected areas of tropical forest on Earth and you can find some incredible animals and plants.

The lodge is also positioned near one of the Amazon’s largest clay licks to see hundreds of brightly colored macaw parrots. In addition to its remote location, the clay lick is the main attraction at this lodge.

Enjoy guided tours around the Tambopata Reserve to find many different monkeys, colorful birds, and fascinating reptiles. In addition to the wildlife tours, you can choose from some extra experiences including a cultural day and a romantic sunset cruise.

Clay Lick - Tambopata Reserve

Not only a great place to see monkeys, colorful birds, and fascinating reptiles, some lucky guests even get to see jaguar sunning themselves by the river. Explore 5 different habitats of the Amazon and you can enjoy a small tower for wildlife viewing.

Animals you’re likely to see from the Tambopata Research Center include the macaws already mentioned, but also titi monkeys, capuchins, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, tamarins, marmosets, capybara, caiman, agouti, peccary, and even occasional sightings of harpy eagles.

The Tambopata Research Center is Rainforest Alliance certified and provides accommodation for researchers studying the Amazon. There is also an ongoing research project at the macaw clay lick and you’re more than welcome to chat to scientists about their research.

As this is very deep in the rainforest, visitors to the Tambopata Research Center will also stop at the Refugio Amazonas Lodge on their way to the lodge, which we will mention later on this list.

The Refugio Amazonas Lodge Tour

Harpy Eagle - Amazon Jungle Adventure Tours In Peru

The Refugio Amazonas Lodge is located in the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve and is a fantastic choice for soft adventure in the Amazon Rainforest.

Accessed from Puerto Maldonado, the Refugio Amazonas Lodge has a large spa area to enjoy a massage and spa treatment and children have their own trail system around the lodge. This helps communicate things about the forest and wildlife in a relatable way for children.

Refugio Amazonas

As a recent addition, guests to the Refugio Amazonas Lodge can also add-on an experience to the famed Chuncho clay lick, which is visited by hundreds of macaws and represents one of the largest macaw clay licks in the Amazon Rainforest.

You can enjoy the 30 meter scaffolding canopy tower to have great views over the rainforest to see colorful birds, such as different parrots, toucans, and tanagers. You may even spot monkeys as they move through the trees.

Enjoy a lake visit to spot hoatzin birds, horned screamers, and caiman. With your naturalist guide, you will also explore the rainforest itself on a network of trails to find an abundance of rainforest life, such as the many different monkeys, frogs, lizards, and different mammals. The Tambopata Amazon is known for its sustainable harvesting of Brazil nuts and we will visit a Brazil nut concession, as well as an ethnobotanical trail, and working jungle farm.

As a bonus, the rainforest surrounding the Refugio Amazonas Lodge has been found to be a popular place for harpy eagles and there have been different nesting sites located over the years. Make sure you send a message using the booking form to ask if there has been one located at the moment. This is the most powerful bird of prey in the Amazon Rainforest and holds almost mythical status.

The Posada Amazonas Lodge Tour

Posada Amazonas Lake - Amazon Jungle Adventure Tours In Peru

A community-owned lodge you can visit from Puerto Maldonado in southern Peru, the Posada Amazonas Lodge is a fantastic choice for an Amazon tour of only 2 or 3 days. Because this is close to the base town of Puerto Maldonado and in an area rich in animals and plants, it means you save a lot of time getting to and from the lodge maximizing your time wildlife watching.

The Posada Amazonas Lodge provides comfortable rooms and is located near an oxbow lake home to giant river otters. You will head out on the lake to spot these curious and fascinating animals and learn about their behavior. Although this is the highlight of the lodge, you will also visit a small clay lick where different parrots and animals visit to get their salts.

Posada Amazonas

After your tours in the rainforest, you can enjoy the small spa area for a massage or spa treatment to help you relax surrounded by the rainforest environment. To keep you connected if you choose, the rooms at the Posada Amazonas Lodge also have wifi.

You can enjoy the 30 meter scaffolding canopy to see some incredible wildlife over the rainforest, such as many different colorful birds. Your guide will help you identify each one and you may even spot monkeys moving their way through the canopy.

You will then enjoy guided tours through the rainforest on a number of different trails to spot capuchins, squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, and titi monkeys. Other wildlife you’re likely to spot include parrots, caiman, and capybara on the river bank.

The Cusco & Amazon Tour – 10 or 12 Days

The Cusco & Amazon tour offers you a breathtaking 12-day journey that marries the historic splendor of Cusco and the awe-inspiring biodiversity of the Amazon Rainforest. If you’re interested in adventure, enjoy the incredible contrast between the Andes and Amazon.

This meticulously curated tour is designed to provide an immersive experience into the heart of Peru’s cultural and natural heritage, offering in depth exploration of ancient ruins, vibrant ecosystems, and stunning landscapes.

Your adventure begins in the storied city of Cusco, once the capital of the Inca Empire, where cobblestone streets and colonial architecture serve as a gateway to the past. From there, venture into the Sacred Valley, a testament to Incan ingenuity and spirituality, before ascending the iconic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This leg of the journey not only offers a physical challenge but also a spiritual journey, culminating in the awe-inspiring view of the ancient citadel at sunrise.

Note that the 10-day tour and 12-day tour differ by offering either the 2-day or 4-day inca trail.

The journey takes a dramatic turn as you descend into the Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest. Here, at the Tambopata Ecolodge, you will be enveloped by the sounds, sights, and smells of the jungle, offering an intimate look at one of the planet’s most vital and vibrant ecosystems. Whether you’re canoeing past giant otters or trekking to ancient Lupuna trees, the Amazon promises an adventure that is both exhilarating and enlightening.

With every detail, from accommodations to itineraries, chosen to enhance your understanding and appreciation of Peru’s incredible diversity, this tour invites you to discover, learn, and be utterly captivated. Note you’re welcome to switch the rainforest lodge with the Tambopata Research Center or Refugio Amazonas (see above) according to your preference.

Getting to Tambopata by Flight, bus or driving

Tambopata is one of the 3 existing provinces (Manu, Tahuamanu, and Tambopata) in the department of Madre de Dios.

Tambopata is located in the south east region of the Peruvian Amazon and whose capital is the city of Puerto Maldonado, which is the gateway to all the nature reserves.

To get to Tambopata, you can choose between air, land (from Lima, Cusco, and Asis in Brazil, via interoceanic highway) and by the river, sailing upstream of the Madre de Dios River (from the Beni on the border with Bolivia and Madeira in Brazil)

  • a) By Plane

Taking into account as the origin of the route to the city of Lima, you can access the air route by three commercial airlines (Avianca, Latam, and Star Peru).

These airlines have direct, interconnected flights with stopovers in Cusco and of an approximate duration of one hour and one hour and a half (without considering the waiting time in Cusco) to Puerto Maldonado.

The flight begins on the coast crossing the Andes to reach the Amazon, having a good climate through the window, the view of the route will leave you amazed.

LAN Peru or LATAM, START PERU and Avianca airlines operate daily planes from Lima through Cusco.

Bus transportation to Puerto Maldonado (Tambopata) connects with cities in southern Peru through the Interoceanic Highway, a transcontinental and international highway that connects Brazil and Peru.

The trip by land is another wonder, it takes approximately 20 hours between Cusco and Lima and 10 hours from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado.

Leaving Lima in a southerly direction, along with the Pan-American Highway, passing through places like Ica. Then, leaving the desert behind, the Pampa Galeras National Reserve is a unique place where you can see the vicunas and guanacos, from the Inca culture.

Then we arrive at the formation of the Apurimac Canyon, we continue the trip to Cusco. From here on the South Interoceanic Highway, which crosses the geography of the Andes, with largely visible snow peaks, descend to Puerto Maldonado and approach the jungle through the town of Marcapata.

Finally, the Tambopata province is reached with its capital Puerto Maldonado city. From this point, it is possible to continue to Brazil passing through Iñapari and then continue towards Rio Branco (Brazil).

Tambopata Location Map

Tambopata tours map and location

Needs and facilities, while Tambopata tours through the jungle and the city

Need to know in the city of Puerto Maldonado(Tambopata)

  • – Money in Tambopata:

Peru uses the Nuevo Sol (S/.), Which comes in letters of S/.10, S/.20, S/.50, S/.100 and S/.200.

The Nuevo Soles (New Sun) is divided into 100 cents, with copper and silver coins of S/. S/.0.20, and S/.0.50.

There are also coins S/.1, S/.2, and S/.5, the last two come in a combination of silver and copper

2.- ATMs in Puerto Maldonado city (Tambopata province).

ATMs (Cajeros automaticos) are found almost everywhere in downtown.

These are linked to the international systems Plus (Visa), Cirrus (Maestro / MasterCard), American Express and other networks.

Most of the bank cards are accepted in highlighted international networks.

Both US dollars and nuevos soles are available at many ATMs in the province of Tambopata in Puerto Maldonado city.

For security reasons, use ATMs inside banks, preferably during the day

  • – Cash (efectivo):

Peru is an economy based mainly on cash, so make sure you have enough cash while you make an excursion in Tambopata.

When you receive local currency, always request small bills, since S100 bills are difficult to change for small purchases. And bring as many free changes as possible, especially in markets or small stores.

Do not accept spoiled or broken money as it probably will not be accepted.

The most advisable thing is not to change money on the street since counterfeits can be a problem.

Authentic bills contain watermarks, relief printing and a strip of metal that crosses the bill in clear and small letters.

In addition, small lines of colored thread and holographic points scattered on the banknote should be embedded in the paper, without sticking.

American dollars are accepted by many jungle tourism oriented companies, including hotels and travel agencies in Tambopoata.

  • – Credit Cards accepted:

Credit cards in the Puerto Maldonado are widely accepted in the best hotels but only in the city, or travel agencies and restaurants, although some can charge up to 7{0c07e28ceaa4a9113412b6d6c36566d44814efa9f018cfe1e423f838d8edf97e} fee.

The most accepted cards are Visa and MasterCard, although they are American Express and some others are valid for cash advances.

Before leaving on a trip, notify your bank that you will use your credit card in Peru to avoid problems.

  • – Cell Phones and international calls

You could buy international long distance calling cards that are for sale at most stores, you could also recharge if you know your own local cellular number.

Widely accepted are Claro or Movistar Peruvian chip number or also the recent companies of Bitel or Entel.

A few blocks from Plaza de Armas (Main Square) there are few Internet booths, specifically located on the Av, Leon Velarde Tambopata Peru. They have SKYPE and other programs to communicate through the Internet.

The country code of Peru is ’51’, the area code of Tambopata is ’82’. To call Puerto Maldonado or Tambopata from the US UU., Dial 011- (for international dialing) -51-82, then the local phone number of 6 and 9-digit cell phones.

  • – Wi-Fi in remote located Eco Lodges

In remote and rural areas there is a limited telephone service and small areas outside of Puerto Maldonado or Tambopata there is no access to the Internet.

Satellite phones work well in the Amazon lowlands, as long as the horizon is unobstructed or there is no cloudiness.

  • – Electricity

Most of the jungle ecolodges in Peru have gasoline generator or solar panels, all of them are available at night to recharge their electronic devices.

Peru uses 220 volts, 60 cycles of electricity. Travelers will require a voltage converter for 110-volt devices. The plugs are typical of the flat 2- prongs type found in the USA, Although some facilities have been observed that use the 2 rounded prongs in place.

People and local communities in Tambopata

Within the buffer zones are the native communities of Infierno, Palma Real and Sonene belonging to the Ese ‘Eja ethnolinguistic group; and the native Kotsimba community of the Puquirieri ethno-linguistic group.

For most tribes, the jungle offers a semi-nomadic existence, and in terms of material possessions, they have, need and want very little.

The communities are scattered throughout the Amazon rainforest, made up of groups ranging from family to no more than 200 people, and their sites change every few years.

For subsistence, they depend on small cultivated plots, river fish and game of the forest, including wild pigs, deer, monkeys and a great variety of edibles.

The main species of edible fish in the jungle are sabalo (a type of large catfish), carachama (a hooded catfish), and combative piranha (generally not as dangerous as Hollywood represents).

You can also find the giant zungaro and paiche – the latter, in up to 200 kg, being the largest freshwater fish in the world.

In fact, food is so plentiful that jungle dwellers usually spend no more than three or four days a week engaged in subsistence activities.

What you should not miss from Tambopata tours

  • a) The reserved area of Tambopata Candamo

Is the most economical and least known, visited mainly by organized tours from Puerto Maldonado?

These areas encompass some of the most exciting species of flora and fauna in the jungle and the world.

  • b) The Bahuaja-Sonene National Park

The newest protected area is in Tambopata Province where the famous Chuncho Macaw clay lick is located.

  • c) Lake Sandoval and the vast expanse of Lake Valencia;

Tambopata lodges

The Tambopata National Reserve, an important protected area. Here, a chain of shelters by the river offers various types of accommodation (from budget accommodation to absolute luxury hotels) within reach of countless day trips and one of the largest clay walls in the country.

Animals of the Amazon rainforest Tambopata

Hoatzin Punk chickens are easily heard while your boat passes along the Sandoval lake. If you hear a lot of whistling, grunting and vegetative sounds, you have probably stumbled upon the elaborate mating ritual of one of the Amazon’s rarest birds, the hoatzin. This is a large wild chicken with a blue face and a large crest on the head (hence the nickname ‘chicken punk’).

Scientists have been unable to classify this bird as a member of any other avian family, mainly because of the two claws the young have in each wing. To evade predators, hoatzin chicks will fall from the nest into the river and use their claws to help them recover the muddy banks.

The clawed wing is a feature that no other airborne creature has since the pterodactyl possessed. The appearance of the bird is overcome by its terrible smell, which may well be the first indication that they are close. They also have bad taste, so they are rarely hunted. In this time of depletion of the forest, they are one of the few native birds with a flourishing

  • Tambopata tours show you countless birds, frogs, alligators, giant river otters and the unusual ear of avian species known as jungle chicken (its official name: hoatzin).
  • For the best tours of Tambopata explore, plan to spend at least two nights in the area.
  • A beautiful boat ride will take you back to Puerto Maldonado. The Tambopata river, 2 km south of the city, has boats to the Tambopata reserve. The boats to the jungle lodges leave from both docks.

I wanted to thank you very much for planning the trip to Peru for my boyfriend and me. It was amazing and exceeded my expectations! We had a wonderful time and were very pleased with the accommodations in Cusco and Aguas Calientes. Our private/small tour guides were fantastic! I appreciate all the effort to get us to Machu Picchu finally.

Just wanted to say many, many thanks for helping me set up an amazing Manu Jungle adventure! My nephew and I had a blast! All of the accommodations were perfect as were the activities that we did (macaw clay lick visit, Tapir Clay Lick visit, hikes through the jungle, night walks and giant otter searching!) We have such fond memories and can't thank you enough!
