Adaptive cruise control supplements conventional cruise control with an active vehicle-to-vehicle distance control feature. Designed for use on freeways and express ways, in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode, your car automatically accelerates or decelerates in order to maintain a preset following distance from the vehicle traveling directly ahead of you.

To activate the system, press the "ON/OFF" button at the end of the stalk on the lower end of the right side of the steering wheel. The radar-ready indicator will appear in the Multi Information Display.

Accelerate or decelerate to your intended speed, then press the stalk down to set it. If you want to go faster, push the stalk upward and hold until you've reached the desired speed and then release it. Or, if you want to slow down, push the stalk down and hold as you decelerate, then release it once you've reached the desired speed.

To cancel cruise control, tap the brakes, pull the stalk towards you or turn the system off with the ON/OFF button.

Adaptive Cruise Control was designed to maintain the preset distance between your car and the car driving in the same lane directly ahead of you.

When it’s active, it automatically adjusts for changes in the speed of the vehicle traveling directly ahead of you in order to maintain the vehicle-to-vehicle distance you set.

In the event that you would like to change the preset distance between vehicles, you can do so by using the radar range button located on the lower right side of the steering wheel. Simply press the button repeatedly to cycle through the ranges available. You'll find them displayed on the Multi Information Display. And finally, you can disable the distance holding feature by pushing the cruise control stalk away and holding it until the indicator disappears and the conventional cruise control indicator lights up.

Where Is Cruise Control On Toyota Yaris?

Selecting the cruise on/off buttons on your car will start the cruise control system. The controls are typically positioned on the turn signal lever or the steering wheel itself.

Has the 2018 Toyota Yaris get cruise control?

Toyota is aware that it is much simpler to build a dependable car with tried-and-true components than to attempt to ride the cutting edge. Although sometimes necessary, that philosophy has been overused in the Yaris. It appears to be years behind its rivals and other Toyotas.

Good little automobiles have experienced a revival during the last five to ten years. Newer models of the Honda Fit, Kia Rio, Ford Fiesta, and others illustrate that we can now manufacture desirable, well-rounded automobiles at an affordable price, despite the fact that they were frequently perceived as poorly built, unrefined cars for those who couldn’t buy something better.

For less than $19,335 each, the Corolla, Corolla iM, and Yaris iA feel like real contemporary automobiles with contemporary refinement.

I could overlook the harsh plastics everywhere because the class pricing necessitates the use of certain inexpensive materials, but most rivals at least attempt to give the interior a pleasing aesthetic with a few pieces of glossy trim or brightwork. Not so in this case, where the infotainment looks pasted in and there are large seams everywhere where panels were installed.

It also includes a rather peculiar collection of tools. Every Yaris comes with automatic high beams as standard equipment, but automated lights are not available. Given that installing automatic high beams is more difficult and expensive, that seems odd. The Toyota Entune infotainment system, which has been a pain to use since it began, is included in the basic versions, but cruise control is not.

Additionally, only high-end versions are equipped with an immobilizer, which assures that the engine won’t start if the key’s chip isn’t recognized. Its addition is practically free because it is basic anti-theft equipment.

The Yaris makes me lose all fondness for its manual transmission thanks to a clunky, ambiguous shifter and only five forward ratios. Even in this low-power class, the 106 horsepower produced by the 1.5-liter engine is pitiful. Additionally, it uses a loud and crude method of delivering its meager power. While the floaty handling doesn’t quite match the bouncy ride, road and wind noise may be heard inside the cabin.

The Toyota Yaris from 2019 has cruise control, right?

In a recent press release, Toyota announced its plan to replace the Toyota Yaris iA with merely a regular Toyota Yaris in the existing lineup. The Toyota Yaris and Yaris iA will be combined to become the 2019 Toyota Yaris, but with a few nice additions to tie everything together. For more information, keep reading!

Toyota Yaris Features and Trim Levels

The new 2019 Toyota Yaris will come in three trim levels, L, LE, and XLE, as opposed to the previous Toyota Yaris iA’s single trim level. Numerous great features are available on all of these model levels, including as a cruise control, rearview camera, and 7-inch infotainment touchscreen. These features are all included as standard equipment in every model.

Another wonderful standard feature for a car at this budget is the low-speed pre-collision system, but if you want adaptive cruise control or blind-spot monitoring, you’ll need to seek elsewhere. Whether Apple CarPlayTM or Android AutoTM will be offered, as they were in the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback, is unknown.

Toyota Yaris Exterior Changes

With the exception of a fantastic new honeycomb feature in the grille and a piano black and chrome trim, the 2019 Toyota Yaris largely retains its previous appearance. 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, and outside heated mirrors with LED turn signals are standard on the LE and XLE trim levels. The exterior of the new 2019 Toyota Yaris is elevated by all these fantastic features.

Although the price of the 2019 Toyota Yaris has not yet been disclosed, it is anticipated to be in the same range as the outgoing model, which starts at $15,950. Expect to see the new Toyota Yaris shortly; it will probably arrive in showrooms in the fall of 2018!

How does the cruise control icon appear?

The controls needed to operate it are often located on the steering wheel or one of the car’s indicator stalks.

You’ll frequently need to depress a button labelled with the cruise control icon, which is a speedometer symbol with an arrow pointing in a specific direction (seen on the stalk below).

The following buttons are typically used to activate cruise control:

Cancel Instead of the off switch, there should be a button that just pauses the system, in case you get stopped behind a slower vehicle. The similar effect is produced by pressing the brake pedal.

Resume or Res After pausing the cruise control, press here to resume it. The vehicle will resume moving at the predetermined pace.

Up and Down, plus and minus These change the preset speed of the cruise control. You can hit the minus button to slow down, for instance, if you’re on a highway and come to a set of roadworks with a lower speed restriction.

Using the brake pedal will immediately pause the system and cause the car to slow down just as if the system were turned off, allowing you to override cruise control whenever necessary. The speed of the car will rise if the accelerator is pressed. The cruise control typically stays on when you release the gas pedal and brings the vehicle back to its predetermined pace.

How does cruise control work?

Each vehicle model’s cruise control differs differently, however the majority of systems function quite similarly. Start cruising by following these 5 steps:

1. Increase your speed: Cruise control is best used on a freeway or dual carriageway where you can maintain a consistent pace of at least 30 mph without stopping frequently.

2. Turn on cruise control: Once you are traveling at the speed you want to be (while staying inside the posted limit), activate the cruise control system. The controls for it often sit on or behind the steering wheel, and when it’s turned on, a light will be seen on your dashboard.

It’s important to identify the buttons before using cruise control for the first time in order to avoid fumbling around while driving and potentially dangerous situations.

3. Set the cruise control: Press the set button after turning on the system. Your car will receive this communication and maintain the present speed. The dashboard indicator will turn green in the majority of cars as a result. Once the cruise control is in place, you can let up on the gas and the vehicle should continue to go at the same speed.

4. To accelerate: To increase the vehicle’s speed, most cars have a “up” arrow or “+” button. The system will typically be overridden if the accelerator pedal is depressed.

5. To slow down, either use the brake pedal or the down arrow on the cruise control system. As soon as the brake is engaged, the cruise control will turn off for safety reasons.

The “cancel” button has several functions, including pausing cruise control so you may regain full control without the system completely turning off. The speed you chose to cruise at should be maintained.

How is a Toyota cruise used?

There are more buttons and gadgets in our cars than we sometimes know what to do with. How to operate the cruise control on a Toyota is one of the features that drivers inquire about most frequently. Fortunately, the procedures are simple and will improve the effectiveness and regularity of long distance travel.

Instructions for using Toyota cruise control

With the stock located on the right side of the driver’s steering wheel, cruise control can be activated. Additionally, indicators that reflect whether cruise control is engaged and the selected speed are displayed on the Toyota’s Multi-Information Display (MID).

  • Push the ON/OFF button on the stock in order to turn the system on.
  • On MID, the cruise control icon will appear.
  • Boost or brake to the desired speed.
  • To set speed, press the stock down.
  • On MID, a set indicator will appear.
  • Press stock up to accelerate in one-mile increments to boost speed.
  • Hold the stock up continually while you accelerate in bigger steps.
  • To adjust speed, release the stock.
  • By pressing the stock down, you can slow down in one-mile increments.
  • Hold down the stock continually to reduce speed in larger steps.
  • Pull the stock in your direction or apply the brakes to turn off the cruise control.

How can I tell if the cruise control on my car is on?

First, assess the highway’s driving conditions. Inclement weather is not intended for usage with cruise control. When determining whether to use your car’s cruise control, use caution. Before engaging cruise control, especially if it is your first time using the device, make sure there are no impending obstructions.

  • Even if the road appears to be empty, it would be a bad idea to use cruise control in such weather.

Increase your speed. The legal limit for traveling on an interstate is often between 55 and 70 miles per hour. The cruise control speed range is great. Never try to increase the cruise control speed on your car past the speed limit. This is reckless and dangerous.

Turn on cruise control once you’ve reached the appropriate speed. The cruise control system’s buttons are often found on the steering wheel in cars. To prevent an accident, identify these buttons by consulting your owner’s manual when the automobile is not in use.

The mechanism is often activated by pushing a larger button labeled “cruise.”

Set the cruise control after the cruise control system has been turned on. Most likely, this will only involve pressing another steering-wheel button. You can take your foot off the accelerator after you’ve set the cruise control. The vehicle must maintain its speed.

Keep a close eye on the road when operating a vehicle that is being accelerated by a cruise control system. You will need to turn off cruise control before you slow down or stop, which will cause a delay in your reaction time.

Most models either feature additional buttons or let the driver temporarily press the accelerator pedal while in cruise control.

Either hit the corresponding cruise control system button or swiftly press the brake to slow down. Almost all car models automatically deactivate the cruise control as soon as the brake is applied as a safety measure.

When driving on the interstate, using cruise control is a terrific method to manage your speed. By avoiding abrupt accelerations and decelerations, setting your vehicle’s cruise control to a suitable speed will also cut down on fuel use. Be warned that if you are prone to driving fatigue, it is not a good idea to utilize cruise control. Many motorists believe that being able to unwind their legs while driving and not having to pay strict attention to their speed increases the risk of driver tiredness.

Here is a video explaining adaptive cruise control, which is a precursor to autonomous vehicles and is becoming more and more common in new cars every year:

Tested: 2019 Toyota Yaris Shines in Its Class

Toyota's budget sedan provides driving fun and an upscale interior.

land vehicle, vehicle, car, automotive design, motor vehicle, mid size car, ford motor company, hatchback, ford, compact car,

The Yaris is not the market's most affordable car —that honor belongs to the Nissan Versa . But it is Toyota 's entry-level product and also one of Toyota's three models shared with other brands, the others being the 86 and Supra sports cars, which were co-developed with Subaru and BMW. The Yaris is almost entirely a Mazda 2 with a lightly restyled front end. The partnership seems to be working, as the Yaris has made it through two name changes over five years, first debuting for 2016 as the Scion iA and then transitioning to the Yaris iA in 2017 after Scion's dissolution. Its latest designation positions the Yaris to sell both as the current sedan and as a hatchback starting in 2020 .

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Steering wheel, Center console, Mode of transport, Automotive design, Gear shift, Mazda, Steering part,

Although it lost two letters for 2019, the Yaris gained two trim levels and is now available in L, LE, and XLE guise. Starting at $16,530, the Yaris L is a fantastic bargain, offering standard air conditioning, cruise control, two USB ports, a 7.0-inch touchscreen with a redundant rotary controller knob, satellite radio, six speakers, six airbags, forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, steering-wheel radio controls, and complimentary scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles. Our XLE tester turned up the charm with a combo of faux and real leather inside, leather interior trim, automatic climate control, attractive 16-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, LED headlights, and rain-sensing wipers. All of this for a modest $19,470. Our only complaint is that the XLE can only be had with a six-speed automatic transmission; a six-speed manual saves $1100 on lower trims.

Beyond the build sheet, the Yaris's interior strikes a pleasant balance between stark and overstyled. Blue stitching and soft-touch materials significantly distance the Yaris from the penalty-box interiors typically found in this price class. Some cost-cutting measures were clearly made behind the scenes as evidenced by prevalent road noise. The back seat and trunk also are a bit stingy on space. For maximum volume in this class, see the Honda Fit . The largest demerit inside the Yaris is the absence of a center armrest. A full center console would be welcome, but without so much as a flip-down support the driver's right arm hangs uncomfortably limp. It is the only piece out of place in an otherwise well-designed cockpit.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Mazda, Mid-size car, Automotive design, Family car, Mazda6, Compact car, Mazda3,

Fortunately, there's pleasure to be had in keeping both hands on the wheel. While its affordable pricing and premium materials are significant, what cements the Yaris as our favorite subcompact is its driving verve. Despite the car's unimpressive 191-foot stop from 70 mph and 0.84 g of lateral grip around the skidpad, its well-weighted steering and composed chassis work together to provide a playful and competent feel on the road. Less playful is the engine, a wee 1.5-liter inline-four that produces only 106 horsepower and 103 lb-ft of torque. That means that, even though it carries around just 2458 pounds, the Yaris needs 9.6 seconds to reach 60 mph and a lazy 17.4 seconds to cover the quarter-mile. Toggling the transmission's Sport mode or shifting it manually is necessary for any spirited behavior, but once you get up to speed the Yaris is a treat to pilot. And it comes standard with a digital clock.

LOWS: Unsettling front-end design, cabin noise at highway speeds, no center armrest.

Toyota Cars w/ Adaptive Cruise Control (19 Popular Models)

Once only seen on luxury vehicles, adaptive cruise control has become standard in many models, including Toyotas.

The following Toyota cars, SUVs, trucks, and minivans have adaptive cruise control.

Check the corresponding tables to see the relevant model years when the system is available.

toyota

Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

The first iteration of the more-basic cruise control system in older Toyota models helps the vehicle maintain a steady speed, ideal for highway cruising.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional system by adjusting the car’s speed to match the vehicle in front, especially when the latter slows down.

When the vehicle ahead changes lanes or accelerates, the ACC will return your car to the speed you set.

Newer Toyotas have Toyota Safety Sense, a bundle of active safety features which include dynamic radar cruise control.

The following rival makes also have popular models with ACC:

  • Honda vehicles with ACC .
  • Nissan vehicles with ACC .
  • Hyundai vehicles with ACC .
  • Kia vehicles with ACC .
  • Volkswagen vehicles with ACC .
  • Ford vehicles with ACC .

Edmunds' Expert Review

Kurt Niebuhr

  • Lots of appealing standard features at a reasonable price
  • Attractive interior fitted with upscale materials
  • High fuel economy
  • Unequaled handling performance for the class
  • Acceleration is slow even for the subcompact segment
  • Taller drivers might have a hard time getting comfortable
  • Sporty suspension comes at the cost of road comfort
  • Limited cargo and interior space

What's new

  • Last year's Yaris iA has been renamed to just Yaris
  • Sedan body style only
  • New front and rear styling treatments
  • Three trim levels are now available: L, LE and XLE

What is the 2019 Toyota Yaris? That seems like a simple question, but the answer is anything but. We'll do our best to keep things simple. First, the vehicle we're reviewing here is a four-door sedan, which in past years was known as the Yaris iA. Last year's plain-old Yaris, no iA, was a four-door hatchback.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2019 Toyota Yaris L 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl 6M) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.42 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

So in simple terms, "Yaris" equals sedan now. Great, but the confusion doesn't end there since this Toyota is in fact designed, engineered and manufactured by Mazda. That means it's different from other vehicles in Toyota's lineup, from the way it drives to the way you change the radio. But that shouldn't be considered a bad thing. Mazda has proven itself rather adept at building small cars, especially ones that are engaging and fun to drive.

The Mazda DNA isn't just limited to the mechanical bits either. The Yaris cabin inherits Mazda's attractive interior styling and thoughtful ergonomics. It's actually a much nicer environment than what you get in the Toyota-designed and -built Yaris Liftback. For its part, though, Toyota has included many features as standard on the Yaris, even on the lowest L trim, that many manufacturers only include as options.

While the Yaris might be surprisingly fun to drive, it is not particularly fast, even in a class where slow is the accepted norm. Other knocks against the Yaris include the slightly cramped back seat that doesn't fold completely flat and makes for an uneven load floor for longer objects. Still, we think the 2019 Yaris should be at the top of the must-drive list for anyone in search of an affordable subcompact sedan — no matter who makes it or what it's named.

Edmunds' Expert Rating

Trim tested.

The Toyota Yaris is the most fun you'll have in a slow car. Its main strengths rest in its superbly playful handling and excellent transmission. We also really enjoy the response and quickness of the steering during spirited driving stints. What the Yaris doesn't deliver is much straight-line speed. Its 1.5-liter engine makes a meager 106 horsepower, which will have you flooring the gas pedal frequently to get up to highway speeds. We measured its run up to 60 mph at a tick over 10 seconds. That's slow, even for the economy class.

And while its low-grip tires are fun when you're wanting to flick it around corners, they don't help stop the Yaris as quickly as others in the class.

It's a tough task to design comfort into a vehicle this small, and the Yaris is no exception. The seats offer above-average lateral support for steadying you through turns, but they lack lumbar support for the everyday commute. Ride comfort has taken a back seat to handling performance, which means you'll feel bumps and road texture more than you might want to.

We found the single-zone climate control system easy to use and fairly effective at keeping the cabin cool despite the lack of rear vents. Its steady stream of noise, both wind and road, is common for the class. There are no vibrations or creaks, though, which is admirable for an economy car.

Simplicity has its benefits. The Yaris subscribes to that philosophy, and all the controls are quite easy to learn and use. There's good adjustability in the driver's seat to accommodate a wide range of body types, though don't expect to sit behind anybody taller than 6 feet. Space, as with other vehicles in this class, is at a premium, and there isn't much of it in the Yaris' cabin. Nor does the Yaris try to make the space feel larger than it is.

Getting in and out of the front is mostly easy, but the back seat requires a degree of limberness that most won't want to deal with every day. Visibility is no better or worse in the Yaris than other vehicles in this class, which is to say there aren't any significant issues.

For such a tiny car, the 13.5-cubic-foot trunk space manages to be pretty comparable to class leaders. The 60/40-split fold rear seats don't quite fold flat, creating about a 5-inch ledge between the cargo area and folded seatbacks. There's a lack of storage space for items in the cabin, at least if you don't want them visible to the outside world. Where the center armrest would be is where the cupholders are, so the only covered space is the small glovebox.

Though not uncommon for the class, the Yaris will not accommodate a rear-facing seat safely so any other passengers will have to give up that prime shotgun location. The car seat anchors are buried a little deep into the seatbacks, but it wasn't too hard to install our car seat.

Our test car didn't come with the optional navigation system, but we've found the system to be fairly easy to use in other vehicles. The standard audio system produces a surprisingly clean sound that doesn't distort even at a higher volume. Smartphone integration is a bit lacking since Android Auto isn't offered and Apple CarPlay isn't available until the 2020 Yaris model year. There are two USBs and a 12-volt outlet to provide charging for your devices, and Bluetooth paired quickly.

The Yaris is also lacking in advanced driver aids. You won't find Toyota Safety Sense here, just a low-speed front collision warning/mitigation system that only works below 18 mph.

Which Yaris does Edmunds recommend?

2019 toyota yaris models.

The entry-level L comes with 15-inch steel wheels, forward collision warning, low-speed automatic emergency braking, a rearview camera, full power accessories (lock, mirrors, windows), cruise control, air conditioning, a height-adjustable driver's seat, cloth upholstery, Mazda's infotainment system (center console controller, a 7-inch display that responds to touch when the car is stopped), voice recognition, Bluetooth, two USB ports, an auxiliary audio jack, HD and satellite radio, and a six-speaker sound system.

Stepping up to the LE gets you 16-inch alloy wheels, foglights, a rear spoiler, heated outside mirrors, LED turn signals, and keyless ignition and entry.

The XLE loses the option of the manual transmission but gains automatic LED headlights, automatic wipers, automatic climate control, simulated leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and two drive settings (Normal and Sport).

Yaris Hybrid Cruise Control

I'm starting to get the hang of the various functions on our new Yaris.

The Cruise control took a bit of getting used to, especially as I didn't realize the switch was of the two-way rocker type.

The one with the speed limiter is a little different, and useful (for instance) where there are road works with multiple cameras.

I was trying to explain how it works to a friend, and he said it's something he would never use as it's downright dangerous.

I can't say that I agree. If it were, it wouldn't be fitted. Thought's anyone  ?

FROSTYBALLS

We have had cruise control/speed limiter on our last two i20's and speed limiter on our Aygo. We find cruise really useful on motorway journeys (especially on our annual trips to Skye - journey of 520+ miles), and, the speed limiter when travelling through average speed cameras/road works.

Can take a bit of getting used to initially, but perfectly safe.

I almost always use the cruise control on motorway jouneys. I think it's safer that not using it. I drove tired the other day and it jolted me awake my slowing down a couple of times when i got too close to the vehicle in front.

Our last several cars since a previous 09 (I think) Yaris (Mini, Smart, Jeep, Hyundai) have had cruise control/speed limiter. Recently got an 18 plate Yaris with CC, but absolutely amazed and disappointed that it doesn't have the limiter function.  😠

It also doesn't display what CC speed is set, so 'Set' is a stab in the murk and 'Resume' a gamble.

I never even thought about it until after I collected it and found out. I don't know if it would have been a deal-breaker if I'd realised sooner, but it's amazing how a simple thing like that can take the shine off a car.

By-the-by, of all those cars the Mini had the most outstanding interface for, and operation of, the CC/Limit. Really intuitive and easy to use without having to think much, and accurate in operation. Jeep and Smart were/are terrible, Hyundai ... meh.

Remind me never to drive around Leicestshire, if there's folk like you that need jolting awake!!!!

HELP help please for fruitcake sake

I this years Yaris cross and I just cannot understand how to operate cruise control with the steering wheel controls.

Please it is driving, no pun intended, CRAZY.

On the right side of steering wheel there's a two way button with an odometer icon and a lever with RES/SET.   Push it up and you should see a message on center display indicating that cruise control / radar is ready.  Reach the speed you want to mantain and push the lever down ( SET ).  The CC is engaged.  You can fine tune the speed with RES ( increment speed ) an SET ( decrement speed ).

If you push brake pedal CC disengages and you can engage it back pushing once RES.

It's in the manual -  https://www.toyota.co.uk/customer/manuals

But briefly, as Ricky says, press the button that has a car with a dial under it to 'arm' the system, then get to the speed you want to and then pull down on the +Res/-Set switch, and it'll lock the car to that speed in radar-guided mode.

1 hour ago, Cyker said: this is the sort of thing they should show you during test-drive and handover (But very few do!)

They don't and also they may disable beep alerts from the other safety features when they let you go out for a test drive. For any prospective buyers, it may be worth specifically asking for these to be demo'd in case it's a dealbreaker for him indoors.

10 U.S. Market Alternatives To The Forbidden Toyota GR Yaris

Hot hatches seem to have been fighting back for the attention of buyers in recent years. It's certainly like more of the small fun cars have been available to us in recent times. That's why it's disappointing that Toyota is unable to bring the GR Yaris to the U.S. especially when it is possibly the biggest market for such a car and seeing that other sport compacts are so popular.

Developed with the goal of rally competition by Toyota's motorsports arm, Gazoo Racing World Rally Team , the GR Yaris calls back to the days of homologation specials. Rally-bred rockets like the Mitsubishi Evos that found success in the mid- to late nineties, the Lancia Delta which to date is still the most successful rally car ever. And of course, Toyota's own two-time WRC champion, the Celica GT-Four. Admittedly a “pet project” of Mr. Toyoda himself and developed with none other than four-time world rally champion Tommi Makinen, quite literally at the helm serving as test driver alongside Akio Toyoda, the GR Yaris is undeniably unique.

As a four-wheel drive subcompact hot hatchback, the GR Yaris has no head-on rival. It packs more power than most performance hatches of its size and is four-wheel drive when other pocket racers stick to powering only their front tires. But with some bench racing, there are alternative hatchbacks available in the U.S. market that are equally fast and capable and could quench the yearning for the GR Yaris. From every price bracket, new and used, some options can entertain just as much in the meantime while waiting for the GR Yaris to turn twenty-five.

We have gathered information from reliable sources like the respective manufacturer websites, and Car and Driver to compile a list of U.S. market alternatives to the Toyota GR Yaris.

RELATED: The Current State Of Four Cylinder High-Performance Cars

2024 Volkswagen Golf R

Starting price: $44,740.

Hot hatch granddaddy that it is, the Golf R is the most grown-up choice in the Sport Compact car class. Even as the Civic Type-R matures to a more subdued design, the Golf R and its more traditional GTI sibling go about their way more inconspicuously. That isn't to say that the Golf R has gone soft. As Volkswagen's translation of the ultimate sport compact, the Golf R matches its nearest contention when it comes to horsepower and is arguably given an edge by its 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

As a turbocharged, four-wheel drive hatchback, the Golf R is one of the GR Yaris' closest competition, even if it is larger and makes more horsepower. And considering the spirit of a hot hatch, larger just means more practicality and more power just means more fun.

Specifications

Where the R departs though is from the fundamentals of a Golf which since its beginning has driven only its front wheels and becomes the best interpretation of what the nameplate can be, tradition and history be damned. Just as refined and elegant as the Golf's styling outside, the R trades the GTI's iconic plaid seat upholstery for Nappa leather that matches the refinement of its exterior.

The Golf R does away with the complication of various trims and variants and comes fully loaded. It leaves you only two choices, color preference, and two- or three pedals. With its intelligent 4Motion all-wheel-drive system and 315 horsepower, the R turns the Golf into a sharply-dressed all-weather thug that's suited for the family man who's still a child at heart.

Honda Civic Type-R

Starting price: $43,795.

Even though the Civic has bloated as it aged, now in its eleventh generation, Honda engineers have done well to maintain the sports car-like capabilities of the Type-R without sacrificing its daily usability. In its FL5 iteration, the performance Civic is more of a liftback than it is a hatchback certainly offering more practicality than the diminutive GR Yaris.

Developed on racetracks like Suzuka, the Nurburgring, and the Tsukuba Circuit in Japan, the hot Honda is even more performance-oriented and razor-sharp. Despite moving to more contemporary styling versus its previous generation and split opinions about its serrated and angled looks, the new Type-R has improved cooling and aerodynamics. Its larger, more functional vents and openings neatly tie into its matured presentation.

Hot hatch as it may be, the Civic Type-R is a front-wheel drive sport compact car and isn't in direct competition with the GR Yaris. But when considering its purpose as a fun, performance-oriented practical daily driver, the Type-R is aimed squarely at the same audience, delivering its flavor of pragmatic speed.

Yes, VTEC and turbo just kicked in yo, with the K20C engine FL5 Type-R, but it still is a Civic. This means it retains all the available passenger and cargo space as the regular Civic hatchback. The customary Type-R touches are all present, like the copious amounts of red upholstery and stitching, brushed aluminum shift knob. New for the FL5 is a line of shift lights accompanied by a rev limit buzzer when you get to its 7,000 RPM.

Toyota GR Corolla

Starting price: $35,900.

Just when we thought we wouldn't be getting Toyota's three-cylinder performance hatchback, the GR Corolla is announced to be on sale in 2023 . It may be a different hatchback entirely, but the GR Yaris' huskier brother is just as exciting. Producing an astonishing 300-horsepower, the turbocharged three-piston G16E-GTS engine found in the GR Corolla makes 43- more horsepower than its state of tune in the Yaris to make up for the additional mass of the inherently larger Corolla chassis.

The “GR-Four” all-wheel drive system developed for the GR Yaris also carries over to the performance Corolla giving it an equal amount of flexibility. It also gets the same three drive modes that shift power bias between the two driven axles depending on the selected mode, and a six-speed manual as the sole means to change gears. The GR Corolla is no less serious about its performance capabilities, and its quicker zero to sixty time is evidence of that.

The GR Corolla is Toyota's peace offering to Americans for missing out on its homologation hatchback, and fittingly so. The Corolla is a long-established brand in the U.S. and has been tailor-fit over the years for the needs of its market. So it's hard to argue with the GR Corolla tasked to be Toyota's U.S. sport compact contender.

2023 Hyundai Kona N

Starting price: $34,950.

Yes, the Kona is a subcompact crossover, we live in a strange world, but its platform is based on the Hyundai i30 platform. A hatchback sold in the European and Australian markets that, coincidentally, is Hyundai's WRC contender against the Toyota GR Yaris.

Intended as the replacement for the well-received Veloster N sport compact, the Kona N takes up the mantle . Using the same 2.0 turbo-four engine but this time, mated to a quick-enough eight-speed dual-clutch transmission forgoing the manual found in the smaller N-car.

While the Kona N is taller and only front-wheel driven, its size and power are similar, which makes it an awesome alternative to the GR Yaris. The N treatment in the Kona isn't just more power, a re-tuned suspension and bigger brakes were also baked into the mix. “N” after all, stands for Namyang, where Hyundai's R&D HQ is located, and Nürburgring, where their N-cars are perfected.

Fun features in the Kona N are the over-boost button, giving the Kona a full 10-horsepower more for a twenty-second mad dash, contrast stitching in the signature blue of the N-division, and the same space as its more tame versions.

2022 Hyundai Veloster N

Average used price: $33,595.

The Veloster was the first Hyundai with the N Performance treatment to arrive at U.S. shores , and it didn't fail to impress. Anyone fortunate enough to sample what the Hyundai performance division accomplished would attest that N Performance hit the ball out of the park from the get-go. Unsurprising when the man who used to run the BMW M division was taking the lead at the next letter over at Hyundai.

After the success of the Hyundai i30N in Europe and Australia, Hyundai doubled on by releasing the Veloster N in the U.S. and went against the Golf GTI and Honda Civic Type-R. Although it was down on power compared to the two, it was more affordable which made it tempting to cut losses on the Type-R and opt for the Hyundai, which left the wallet thicker compared to the Honda.

The Veloster in regular trim was unusual, but its third door had made ingress and egress from its tight rear seats less cumbersome; still better than the Yaris. With such an attractive price and genuine performance, it's not hard to see why the Veloster N was considered good value for money even against the current Civic Type-R.

2016 Ford Focus RS

Average used price: $32,000.

Even against the latest and greatest fast hatchbacks, the third-generation Focus RS packs way more punch than its closest contention , arguably providing more bang for the buck. Especially with its clever all-wheel drive system, which mimics rear-wheel drive slides in its "drift mode", already seems like better value for money versus the GR Yaris and even the FL5 Type-R which is widely considered the best sport compact in the market. Packing 350 horsepower and an equal amount of torque, Ford's rally rocket is properly rapid.

As a five-door, four-wheel drive hatchback, the Ford maximizes its functionality and practicality while containing the savagery of its turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four and its stiffly sprung suspension. The insanity of its performance aside, the Focus is still able to seat four adults with enough space for the luggage of each one. So even as an older, used car option, the fast Ford is still persuasive in a tightly contested segment; massively capable, practical, and certainly remains a more entertaining driver than many in its class.

Developed in homage to Ford's rally roots, the Focus is one of the few in the class equipped with four-wheel drive which makes the Focus an even more potent performer, not picky about road surface and weather.

2013 Mini John Cooper Works GP

One of two thousand ever made, one of five hundred in the U.S., track-optimized adjustable coilover suspension, 13-inch front brake discs with six-piston calipers, and functional aero improvements. If the for sale ad read a short description of what this special Mini is, some might think the description is mismatched with the photo, or that it was a joke. But those details are for this Mini Cooper. And they're all true.

As silly as the idea of a fast Mini might be, let's not forget that the Mini cut its teeth on tight circuits in Europe as well as the Monte Carlo Rally back in the first Mini's heyday. What's silly though is the performance the John Cooper Works GP is capable of. It isn't anywhere near the numbers of the GR Yaris but what the Mini manages with its relatively humble 211-horsepower is no small task .

At the expense of practicality, the Mini GP is tuned to halfway becoming a fully-caged and stripped track car, losing its rear seat and its cruise control in the process. If a multi-role fun car is the objective, the JCW GP is the wrong car. But if a factory-tuned, track-focused toy is what you're looking for, the John Cooper Works GP is one of the best front-driven performers that packs fun with its spectacular performance.

2019 Ford Fiesta ST

Average used price: $16,000.

As a sport subcompact, the Fiesta ST is the entry-level option in the same class the Yaris occupies but in GR trim, the Fiesta ST is nowhere near capable of what the GR Yaris is. But its shortcomings against the GR Yaris aren't saying the Fiesta has none. What the Fiesta ST proposes is raw fun in place of its limitations when it comes to pure speed.

Powered by a 197-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter the Fiesta ST sprints to sixty in 5.9 seconds. It won't break any records, but it is quick for the tiny hatchback that it is. Even with a horsepower figure that almost makes it to 200, the smaller Ford Hot Hatch is a rewarding and entertaining drive because it has a playful chassis and communicative steering.

The Fiesta ST is a reminder that fun and performance don't have to be expensive or complicated. At eight years old, the Fiesta ST still has a lot of life and fight left in it. While its interior may be just as basic as non-fast Fiesta variants, the eagerness of the Fiesta to please and perform is like a poodle at a dog show and is a driving experience that will influence what you look for in a performance car in the future.

2013 Fiat 500 Abarth

Average used price: $12,000.

If the Fiat 500 Abarth escapes you, you're forgiven . It is a micro car built by Fiat for the narrow and congested city roads of Europe tracing its first generation back in 1957. The original Fiat Abarths were built by Karl Abarth and his team in 1964 and were called the 695 Esse Esse. Just like the originals, the newer 500 Abarths are wider, massaged for more power, and take design cues from the originals including the red accents and Abarth's iconic scorpion logo just a few.

Old-school tuning tricks like a larger carburetor, better-flowing cylinder head valves, and performance-oriented camshafts and pistons were ingredients that gave the original Abarths more power. In the newer 500 Abarth, 18-PSI of boost via a quick-spooling turbocharger is what triggers its temper. 160 horsepower may not be much in today's heavy and ungainly cars, but it's enough to motivate the Supermini 500 to spin its tires and take it around a racetrack or a mountain road with exuberance, inducing fun or fright.

Its turbocharged 1.4-liter four is coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox that drives the front wheels. Even as a powerful front-drive sport hatch, the 500 Abarth is zealous to rotate in corners given its short wheelbase and optional 17-inch wheels allowing for 205-section width performance tires. While practicality is compromised by its small dimensions, fun is never in short supply in the Fiat 500 Abarth.

2008 Mazda 3 MazdaSpeed

Average used price: $8,000.

Back in the 2000s, Mazda wanted a piece of the booming sport compact market pie further popularized by the first The Fast and The Furious film that was released in 2001. The market was flooded with fast versions of cheap pedestrian cars and eventually gave way to the automotive aftermarket industry's explosion. Mazda's first attempt at building a sport compact car was the Protégé.

Although it was a commendable effort, it wasn't as popular as the Honda Civics that graced the front cover of many tuning magazines of the time. That's why the Mazdaspeed 3 was all the more a pleasant surprise when it was introduced to tuner car enthusiasts in 2007.

With just over 260 horsepower in 2007, the Mazdaspeed 3 is properly quick. Not just for a hot hatch but in general. For perspective, the NA1 Honda NSX which is considered a true sports car, makes 270 horsepower weighs 3,010 pounds, and hits sixty in 5.2 seconds, so the fast 3 as a hatchback was a front-wheel drive riot.

The Mazdaspeed 3 was so fast that the biggest complaint of owners was its horrendous torque steer under hard acceleration. With such blistering performance from a five-door practical hatchback, the Mazdaspeed 3 may even be a better embodiment of a hot hatch compared to the GR Yaris; even if it is older.
