Formed in 1973, the pop rock band Pablo Cruise hit their peak in the late 70’s and early 80’s reaching the Top 40 five times with their signature hits ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ and ‘Love Will Find A Way ‘ making it as high as number six on the Billboard charts. ‘Don’t Want To Live Without It’, ‘Cool Love’, and ‘I Go To Rio’ would further define their blue-eyed soul and yacht rock persona. Their third album 1977’s ‘A Place In The Sun’ and the follow up release ‘Worlds Away’ in 1978 garnered Pablo Cruise platinum status.

After achieving national success, the band took an extended hiatus in the mid 1980’s, resurfacing for a short while in 1996, and then again in 2004. While three original members perform in the band today, lead singer and guitarist David Jenkins has been a mainstay in Pablo Cruise throughout, spending a few years with the country rock band Southern Pacific beginning in 1987. The remaining original members of Pablo Cruise include Cory Lerios (keyboards) and Steve Price on drums.

Even with the bands downtime, and his stint in Nashville, it is Pablo Cruise that has defined Jenkins’ career. “I’ve always enjoyed being in the band. I think we’ve created good music and songs that have held their own.” At 72 years young, Jenkins is in a good place in his life. “I’m just happy to be healthy and be working. It’s only been the last few years that we’ve learned to fully entertain the crowd. What I mean is we’re having more fun than we’ve had in the past. We kid each other, and try to make if more fun for the audience.”

pablo-cruise-1.jpg

Like many of his contemporaries Jenkins was inspired by the Fab Four. “Seeing The Beatles on Ed Sullivan was a pivotal time for me, and many artists that came up during the 1960’s. I had my first guitar by then, so I was already bitten by the music bug. Of course I had played in band in high school. When The Beatles hit America it all changed for a lot of us who were teenagers at the time.”

Jenkins laughs sharing a story about his parents. “I’m not sure they were sold on me being a rock star. I recall one morning when I didn’t want to go to high school, and my father came into my room, and popped me out of bed saying ‘you’re going’. I had this picture of Bob Dylan hanging on the wall, and he literally snatched it off and wadded it up.”

Although the Jenkins family lived in Michigan and Wisconsin early on, it was in Orlando, Florida where David’s journey into a music career began. “I had college age buddy who said his family was moving out to California and asked if I wanted to go, and maybe help drive a car. My folks weren’t enthused about it but they sent me off. We made the trip through Texas and Mexico before ending up in the bay area of San Francisco. I had maybe four dollars to my name.”

It was the mid 1960’s and Jenkins immersed himself into the music scene. “I think we were there two days and my friend says ‘do you want to visit a guitar shop’. To a musician that’s like saying do you want to watch porn. Of course I wanted to see where some of the musicians were buying their tools of the trade.”

In need of money Jenkins took a job at one of the musical instrument stores. “It was owned by a man named Mr. Hart whose son just happened to be Mickey Hart (drummer for the Grateful Dead). The shop owner asked me if I could teach guitar. I said yes, even though I had only been playing for about a year or so. Through that job I met Mickey, and he and I became quick friends, and still are today. But back then we were struggling musicians looking to find our place in the San Fran music scene.” The two would end up rooming together for a short while. Jenkins would help write music for the track ‘Down The Road’ released on Hart’s 1990’s album ‘Over The Edge and Back (Best of Mickey Hart)’.

Rock n’ roll history has proven San Francisco was a hotbed for musicians, and up and coming bands in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. “It’s amazing how much music was going on at that time, and it wasn’t just the Dead or Jefferson Airplane. On the south side of the bay area there were cats like Sly & The Family Stone. I remember seeing them just before they took off, and I’m like I’ve never heard funk played like this before.”

For various reasons Jenkins did return back to Orlando for some time. “I enrolled in college, taught guitar in the afternoons, and was playing clubs until late at night. I would wake up and did the same thing over and over again. Of course when your 20 years old you have a lot of adrenaline.”

With a musical itch to scratch he found his way back to northern California. “I knew music was what I wanted to do with my life and the San Francisco scene was calling me.” He, Lerios, Price, along with Bud Cockrell formed Pablo Cruise in 1973. They had an eclectic style right away. “We were influenced by so much of the music in the bay area, it just made its way into our music. Cory was really the driving force behind us instrumentally, while the rest of us focused on the songs, and just being a band.”

Their self titled debut release (1975) and the follow up ‘Lifeline’ (’76) hardly made a dent in record sales or produced radio worthy singles. But when ‘A Place In The Sun’ rolled out in 1977 with the ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ as the lead single, Pablo Cruise began to make waves in music industry. “That song definitely put us on the map.”

A Top 10 hit for seven weeks, Jenkins wrote the song about a relationship he was in at the time. “It posed the big question. Do I stay or do I go? It made for great lyrics and gave us our first bona-fide hit, so that was good. I’m not sure I found any answers in my relationship right away, because I was still dealing with it when ‘Love Will Find A Way’ hit the charts a year later.”

After several years of floundering Pablo Cruise was happy to have finally arrived. According to Jenkins it was just the next step on the journey. “We always imagined we’d be successful. When ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ hit we just thought it was the natural progression for the band.”

By the mid 1980’s Pablo Cruise had run its course. There had been a few member changes by that time and Jenkins says they put the band on hold. Not wanting to sit idle Jenkins joined the country rock group Southern Pacific who had had mild success during the 80’s. “They were already established but looking for a new singer. Even though I had friends in the band I still had to attend a cattle call, essentially auditioning for the band.” Jenkins hung around for a little less than four years with Southern Pacific.

Fast forward to 1996 and Jenkins and Cockrell got back together for what would be a partial reunion of the band. “Cory and Steve were busy with other projects so they couldn’t take part. I’ve been the one constant in the band. Back then I had to license the name to perform as Pablo Cruise. It’s just part of the business side of the music industry. But music is what I do, and I wanted to play our songs again, and there were fans out there who wanted to hear us.”

A fuller reunion came in 2004 with Cockrell sitting out. The three original members have been performing now for the past 15 years. “We’re having so much more fun now. We like to say we’ve forgotten what we didn’t like about each other, so we just get up on stage and have fun every night.” Jenkins couldn’t imagine doing anything else with his life. “It’s a cliché’ but I was born to play rock n’ roll guitar, and to sing.”

When he’s not on tour Jenkins splits his time between California and Tennessee. “I own two homes. One in northern California and the other in Nashville. My wife’s family is from Nashville area, and we bought the family home a while back. So apparently we need two of everything, cars for both homes, guitars, and more. It’s a nice problem to have, but I’d be fine with one home.”

Jenkins is married to singer songwriter Jaime Kyle, an established Nashville music tour de force all on her own, penning hit songs for Faith Hill and Heart. “I may be partial but she’s definitely a talented songwriter. We have a studio for my wife where she works on her own projects.”

After more than four decades in the music industry, including touring and recording Jenkins admits he and the band have gone through many changes. “I guess we’re a little more mature, but that’s easy to say at 72. We manage our time better. We have more fun and appreciate what we’ve added to the musical landscape during the rock n’ roll era. We don’t take anything for granted.”

Several of Jenkins career highlights have been off stage. “I remember we were doing something with Paul Anka back in 1980 in Vegas, and he said do you want to go see Sinatra. Of course we all jumped at the chance to see a legend perform. After the show Paul said do you want to meet Frank? Who wouldn’t want to meet Sinatra. We go to a side door. Paul knocks and Frank answers and invites us in. Frank said he liked our music, and we ended up having a drink with him. How cool is that.”

Another highlight for Jenkins was when he performed with a Nashville superstar. “I’ve always been a big fan of Vince Gill. Not just his music, but he’s one of the best musicians working today. I gave him a song one day, and charted the music for his band. He literally surprised me by calling me onstage during one of his shows to perform the song. I’ve shared the spotlight with many rock n’ rollers, but sharing the stage with Vince was a thrill for me.”

While meeting the Chairman of the Board and performing with Gill were iconic, meeting another industry heavyweight was just as impressive. “I was with David Gest, our publicist and we went to see Aretha Franklin perform. After, I got to meet her. That was an incredible moment for me. All of the artists I grew up listening too or jammed with in San Francisco had a major impact on my life. The reason I played with Southern Pacific is because I truly love country music. If you take all music in, I believe it makes you an all around better performer. I’ve been very fortunate over my life and career.”

Since the bands name is fictional, there has always been a bit of a mystique surrounding what Pablo Cruise meant. Jenkins agrees with the overall assessment. Pablo, represents an honest, real, down to earth individual, and Cruise depicts his fun-loving, easy-going attitude towards life. In essence, that's what Pablo Cruise music is all about. Honest, real, down-to-earth vocals. Enjoying the best of both worlds. Jenkins adds, “Experiencing Pablo Cruise live is what it is all about. We’re the kind of guys you want to hang out with. We bring the party and good times with us.”

Low country fans can witness David Jenkins and Pablo Cruise when the guys perform their fun loving music on Friday Nov 8th at the Coastal Carolina Fair at the Exchange Park in Ladson. Pablo Cruise is scheduled to play at 8pm at the lakeside amphitheater. “We’re looking forward to playing for fans in Charleston. We know it’s a great city with a long history, so we’re excited about playing there.”

For Pablo Cruise, second time's a charm

pablo cruise net worth

Man, that must've been some wedding.

By the time the 2004 nuptials of Steve and Nancy Price were over, Pablo Cruise — a band who hadn't played together in two decades — were back together.

The original members of the San Francisco-spawned band — Price, David Jenkins, Cory Lerios and Bud Cockrell — got up to play as part of the celebration. And it felt good.

But it took a little more time for Lerios, Jenkins and Price (Cockrell, who died in 2010, opted out) to make the reunion more than a one-time deal.

"We decided in 2005 to put it together and see how it worked," said Lerios during a recent phone conversation to talk about the Pablo Cruise's Feb. 7 concert at the Admiral Theatre. "We didn't take it too seriously. It was kind of a weekend thing.

"Then, around 2010, we found a new bass player," Lerios said, referring to Larry Antonino, who's been with the band ever since. "Great bass player, really good singer. It kind of energized the band. We were all already really good singers, but Larry made us sound even better."

The incarnation of the band that will play at the Admiral will have yet another great voice. Robbie Wyckoff, who spent five years with Roger Waters' band on the seemingly endless "The Wall Live" tour, signed on in 2017 to add more vocal depth, percussion and something Pablo Cruise had never had before: a front man.

"Robbie's become a major part of the show," said Lerios, who was in Park City Utah for the Slamdance Film Festival, where his two sons (Michael and Demitri, who perform as Fox Wilde) were playing for an event. "He's a phenomenal front man.

"We never had a guy up front like that," he continued. "We're all players. So having Robbie helps a lot with the show."

Pablo Cruise hit Billboard's Top 25 singles chart five times during their 1975-83 heydays. Both "Whatcha Gonna Do?" (from 1977's "A Place in the Sun") and "Love Will Find a Way" (1978's "Worlds Away"), both co-written by Lerios and Jenkins, hit No. 6 in America, and "Whatcha Gonna Do?" found its way to the top of the chart in Canada.

"I think we came up with a pretty unique sound," Lerios said of the band's rise in the fertile — and crowded — San Francisco music scene. "You don't want to be compared to another band, because that's the kiss of death. We never tried to sound like anybody else. We just took what we all had and put it together."

After 1983's "Out of Our Hands," though, Pablo Cruise was an on-again and (mostly) off-again proposition. The celebratory 2011 live album, "It's Good to Be Live," was their only release since, and their first and only live package.

And Lerios — who maintained busy careers as both a session musician and composer of TV and movie scores during the band's lengthy hiatus — said there isn't a new CD on the horizon.

"We do have a couple of new songs," he said. "One of them, ‘This Time,’ we play quite a bit live."

Lerios said Pablo Cruise like to maintain a pretty steady four-shows-a-month live schedule, which allows them in front of audiences, but allow allows ample outside-the-band time.

"That seems to suit everybody's needs," he said. "We just go where the shows are. We were just up in Longview (in mid-January), but we can't wait to get back up there. We hope the people up there are ready for us."

In 1975 Pablo Cruise released its first A&M album simply entitled Pablo Cruise. The album cover was shot in the tropical gardens of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and it featured a huge gorilla standing front and center. The band, David Jenkins (guitars, vocals), Cory Lerios(keyboards, vocals), Bud Cockerel (bass, vocals) and Steve Price (drums, percussion) were no where in sight. At that point there was a bit of a mystique surrounding Pablo Cruise and when asked what Pablo Cruise meant, the well-rehearsed answer went something like this: “Pablo”, represents an honest, real, down to earth individual, and “Cruise” depicts his fun loving, easy going attitude towards life: In essence that’s what Pablo Cruise music is all about. Honest, real down to earth vocals, accompanied by fun yet elegant, infectious grooves. To hear Pablo Cruise on record is one thing, but to experience the band live is an exhilarating event!

From 1975 to 1985 the band toured the United States, Canada and Japan extensively, welcoming fans to “Climb Aboard The Good Ship Pablo Cruise.” Reaching the top 10 with mega hits like “Whatcha Gonna Do When She Says Goodbye?” and “Love Will Find A Way,”and several other top 20’s, the band went on to sell several million albums and singles collectively and established themselves as well respected writers and performers within the industry. They appeared on numerous TV shows, including Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, The Merv Griffin Show, The Dinah Shore Hour and in 1979 they broke Elvis Presley’s attendance record at the Sahara Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada, becoming the first rock band to play a casino showroom. They also became the first rock band to grace the stage at the Grand Ole Opry, but by 1985 after completing several national tours and releasing 7 studio albums in all, the band decided to take a hiatus......one that lasted nearly 20 years.

Fast forward 20 years .....In 2005 a reunited Pablo Cruise picked up where they left off and today the band performs all over the U.S. and Canada and they’re enjoying it more than ever....Since getting back together, they have released two live CD’s and a DVD all through Sony Music documenting their exceptional live shows. “One of the great things about playing shows after all these years is that the core band, David, Steve and myself are still here and lovin’ it, says Cory! Going out and playing shows these days gives us the opportunity to not only pay tribute to our timeless repertoire, it gives us a chance to see old friends and fans from back in the day as well as gaining a whole new audience!” Today Pablo Cruise is bringing more energy and excitement to the stage than ever before and with the addition of Larry Antonino and Robbie Wyckoff, the band has never sounded better..... If you get an opportunity to see Pablo Cruise live, don’t pass it up...... ” IT’S GOOD TO BE LIVE ” www.pablocruise.com

In 1987 Lerios landed his first network series, scoring ABC’s critically acclaimed “Max Headroom.” ABC’s “O’Hara and “Police Story” immediately followed. Writing to “picture” became Cory’s new found passion and in 1989 Cory partnered with long time friend and composer John D’Andrea. Together they formed Lerios D’Andrea Musicworks and aside from scoring 300 episodes of “Baywatch,” they garnered several Emmy Nominations and won the coveted award for “Music Direction for soap “Days Of Our Lives.” Lerios D’Andrea Musicworks went on to produce countless hours of TV scores and themes including “Diagnosis Murder,” “Flipper,” and “Marshall Law.” In 2005 Lerios and D’Andrea parted ways and Cory has continued to write themes and underscore for several shows including Disney’s “Kim Possible,” Universal’s “Land Before Time.” In 2015 Cory released an EP under his pseudonym, “Cory Charles” www.corycharles.com entitled “If I Could Change Anything, It Would Be You.” (Cory’s credits) www.corylerios.com

The Legend of Pablo Cruise

Growing up in Caracus, Venezuala, Pablo Cruz never dreamed of getting to America, let alone becoming a rock and roll star. He sang as a child, and by his teens became pretty good strumming a guitar that belonged to his older brother Francisco. One sultry night in the summer of 1976, while performing with a merengue band in a tiny local joint named Calcaño’s CafĂ©,  destiny found him – along with Georgetown Records executive, Ignacio Irribarren, who was on vacation visiting his family in Caracus. “He stormed up to the stage after our show and roared ‘I’m taking you with me to Nashville and I’m changing your name!’” recalled Cruz. “He’d been chugging wine most of the night so I didn’t believe him at first. But somehow he convinced me that he was serious. Maybe it was his corduroy suit in August,” Pablo said with a laugh.

With his keen marketing instincts and an unorthodox knack for discovering new artists, Irribarren had earned the music industry nickname “Theta Man.” Putting those talents quickly to work, he issued outlandish press releases proclaiming the next Richie “La Bamba” Valens, hired Cruz a backing band of established session players and got him right into the studio, where the magic happened
almost immediately. “It took me a week or so to fully learn to write songs in English,” said Cruz, who amazingly had primarily known only what he’d picked up studying the character Mr. French on reruns of Family Affair until then. The work was recorded, mixed and ready to go in just three months. But Irribarren had one promise still to fulfill. “He said to me, ‘We’re not going to change the way your name sounds, just the spelling.’ I was skeptical, of course, and proud of my family heritage,” said Pablo. “But he was adamant, and boorish, and we’d already come this far.” And so was born the brief pop phenomenon of a man named Pablo Cruise.

The subsequent album Cruise Control was released in February of 1977, and the easy soul of its lead single, ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ proved irresistible to light rock audiences burned out on disco and not ready for punk. As Pablo’s smash record rapidly climbed the charts, so too did his notoriety. Relocating to New York City, he quickly became a regular at famed Studio 54, hanging out with the Liza Minnelli and Diane Von Furstenberg crowd, seen canoodling with the likes of Deborah Harry and pre-Jagger Jerry Hall, and striking up a fast friendship with Andy Warhol, whose unforgettable portrait of Pablo Cruise would stand alongside the Campbell’s Soup Cans and Marilyn Monroe to become one of Warhol’s best-known works ever. One memorable night at Elaine’s, the notorious Upper East Side celebrity eatery, Pablo’s fame reached a particularly farcical level. Tom Cruise, fresh off his breakout success for Risky Business , approached him at his table and began insisting that they were related. “Dios mio, he’d obviously been doing a lot of coke,” giggled Pablo, “so I just let him believe it. Heck, maybe his name had been re-spelled, too!”

Sadly, like so many other overnight success stories, glory for Pablo was excruciatingly short-lived. Unable to recreate the mellow gold of ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ and finding himself supplanted in the popular music scene by more cutting-edge acts like Dan Hill and Christopher Cross, Cruise’s prominence faded precipitously. In desperation, star-maker Irribarren attempted to re-brand Cruise as a leather-clad, heavy metal act, hastily producing the would-be comeback album Cruisin’ For A Bruisin’ . But audiences proved indifferent to Pablo’s new tough guy persona, and less than three short years after his splashy arrival from Caracus, Pablo Cruise faded into rock and roll oblivion.

Two later notable attempts via old Hollywood connections endeavoring to resuscitate Cruise’s utterly dormant career proved painfully fruitless. Will Farrell, a super-fan during Cruise’s brief pop supremacy and hoping to help him get placed on an oldies circuit, prominently wore a Pablo Cruise t-shirt in his moving fraternal relationship film Step Brothers . But still, no offers materialized. And in the final indignity, another bid to revive Pablo’s name and at least garner some possible wedding and bar mitzvah gigs was sabotaged when a perplexing typo in the script for underdog stoner comedy Napoleon Dynamite led to the secondary character being named Pedro rather than Pablo, thus rendering what became the popular plot line of “Vote For Pedro” entirely pointless.

“Whatcha gonna do when she says goodbye? / Whatcha gonna do when she is gone?” went the telling title line to Pablo Cruise’s masterwork, his one brilliant, indelible mark on the pop music world. Little did Pablo Cruise, nee Cruz, know that she – that fickle lady named fate – would pass him so soon. That she was merely, if you will, cruising by.

Um, just kidding. Pablo Cruise was a popular late ‘70’s smooth rock band – who actually did have the hit song ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ – made up of four guys from San Francisco, none of whom was named Pablo Cruise. When the quartet were asked which one is Pablo they would commonly answer, “He’s the guy in the middle.”

And yeah, it’s not April Fool’s Day, but everyone suspects a little deceitful nonsense on April 1st, and not, say, December 5th.

nice little 70's band. 7 studio albums - 'i remember 'world's away" and 'a place in the sun" being everywhere for a while. both, along with a best of can be easily found....the other CD's not so much, and not cheap when you do find them. 2 best of's - one is the old blue cover 'classics' the other a 12 song truncated version of the first. 1 live album - a 2CD set - never heard(or even seen) this live album that was recorded 28 years after their last studio album. 5 top 25 singles. some catchy tunes, some nice songs and instrumentation too.

"A Place In the Sun" was my favorite album. I loved the album track "Atlanta June".

Atlanta June is the first track I thought of when I saw the thread. Worlds Away and A Place In the Sun were great fun albums. They just kind of fit in between the extremes for every other genre that was on the radio. A fun show at our local college.

Always liked "What'cha Gonna Do?" as a guilty pleasure. I think they were pretty good musicians, but I've never delved too deeply into their stuff. I think later on one of the guys wound up composing ESPN's theme/background music.

Was a fan back in the day. Decided they were cheezy and bailed. Decided I had been an idiot and came back.

I had a promo of the original album when it was current, and I was fairly impressed by some of it, in particular the epic length Ocean Breeze: I listened to this one many times. I had in my stash of albums at college and whenever I'd play it, someone would walk by and ask "who is that"? The reply was always met with surprise by people only familiar with the pop hits that they later had. I don't have much time for or interest in the later stuff. But that first album is still a keeper.

Excellent band. Never made any sort of splash over here, unfortunately. Here's how I'd rank the albums: 1. Reflector 5/5 2. Part Of The Game 5/5 3. Debut 5/5 4. A Place In The Sun 5/5 5. Worlds Away 4/5 6. Out Of Our Hands 4/5 7. Lifeline 3/5 My favourite track is probably a hidden gem from Reflector, which was - inexplicably - overlooked as a single, at least if Wikipedia is to be believed: Don't Let The Magic Disappear
They released a new single in 2020 which had me hoping for a new album. No such luck, so far. Decent tune though: Breathe The current line-up is: David Jenkins Cory Lerios Larry Antonino - bass/vocals Sergio Gonzalez - drums (newest member, replaced original drummer, Stephen Price in 2020) Robbie Wyckoff - percussion/vocals

@rjp , just a heads up if you didn't already know, but they are coming to The Kent Stage in August (13th) and you can relive all of their greatness with both David and Cory still with them as the heart of the band! By the way, I've always loved Pablo Cruise, nice simple catchy tunes and that '70's A&M "sound". Speaking of David Jenkins, he later joined the band "Southern Pacific" on their third Warner Brothers album "Zuma", along with The Doobie Brothers John McFee and Keith Knudson, along with Creedence Clearwater Revival's Stu Cook! Talk about a COUNTRY super group!!! I always loved this song by them called, "Trail Of Tears"

Speaking of that LIVE album (which I do not own), but I do have a download of this great acoustic live version from said album in my "Acoustic Playlist" in my iTunes library, with Ty Tyler (whoever that is?)

What Happened to Steve Price From Pablo Cruise?

By Michael Ferguson

Steve Price, the former drummer of Pablo Cruise, has been a prominent figure in the music industry for decades. Known for his exceptional drumming skills and stage presence, he played an instrumental role in shaping the band’s sound and success during their peak years.

However, many fans have been wondering what happened to Steve Price from Pablo Cruise. Despite his contributions to the band’s success, he left the group in 1985 and disappeared from the limelight.

After leaving Pablo Cruise, Steve Price continued to pursue his passion for music. He went on to perform with several other bands and artists such as Eddie Money and Paul Kantner. He also worked on various projects as a session musician, lending his talent to a wide range of musical genres.

Despite his continued involvement in music, Steve Price remained relatively unknown in comparison to his time with Pablo Cruise. This lack of visibility could be attributed to several factors such as changes in musical trends or personal reasons.

Over the years, there have been rumors about Steve Price’s whereabouts and what he’s been up to. However, as of now, there is little information available about his current activities or whereabouts.

Despite this uncertainty, it is clear that Steve Price’s contributions to Pablo Cruise have left an indelible mark on the music industry. His drumming skills were essential to creating the band’s unique sound that enamored fans worldwide.

While we may not know where Steve Price is today or what he’s doing, we can still appreciate his contribution to music history. His talent and legacy continue to inspire musicians around the world and remind us of why Pablo Cruise was such a beloved band during its heyday.
