Me voilà reparti 2h30 après. Me voilà au col (2645m).

Gran Paradiso Hiking Self-Guided Tours

Gran paradise trek overview.

Discover the heart of the Italian Alps: Gran Paradiso National Park. Nestled between the iconic Mont-Blanc and Mont-Rose, this breathtaking region boasts soaring peaks like the Grand Paradis at 4,061m (13,323.49 ft) and enchanting valleys echoing with rich Aosta Valley traditions.

Trace a journey steeped in history, from Celtic origins and Roman influence to the noble House of Savoy. Experience Italy’s first national park, a sanctuary born from Europe’s earliest wildlife protection efforts and home to the majestic Ibex.

You’ll embrace seven or eight (depending on which tour you choose) exhilarating days, sometimes following the famed Alta Via 2, journeying from Valgrisenche to Val de Cogne.

Prepare for challenging ascents reaching up to 3,300m (10,826.77 ft) and immerse yourself in the pristine alpine landscapes: larch forests, mesmerizing mountain lakes, and vibrant meadows following marked trails to guide your adventure.

COMPARISON OF GRAN PARADISO 7- DAY IN PRIVATE ACCOMMODATION VS. 7-DAY TRAVERSE

Ruitor Glacier seen while hiking in Gran Paradiso National Park

We’ve created two routes to appeal to hikers who want more creature comforts and the ability to modify.

  • Both routes have 7 days of hiking. 5 days are different and 2 days are the same.

On the 7-day Gran Paradiso Traverse, there are no variants or rest days, so it’s not easy to modify.

  • On the 7-Day Paradiso Traverse, you’ll be hiking closer to glaciers and moraines so the terrain is rockier and the hiking is more strenuous. The paths are marked, but not as well as on the Private Accommodation itinerary.
  • On the private accommodation tour, you’ll sleep at lower elevations in private accommodation (except for one night) so you may have a more restorative sleep. You’ll also have your own private bathroom (except for one night).

7-DAY PRIVATE ACCOMMODATION ITINERARY

village of Rhême Notre Dame in Gran Paradiso

Day 1: Hike From Valgrisenche – Col de l’Epée – Rhême-Notre-Dame

Today is an exciting day. From the village of Valgrisenche, you’ll hike to the Church of St-Joseph above the village and start a long ascent on the Alta Via N°2 route, which passes by the refuge of the “Sword” where you can stop for a refreshment.

The ascent is very gradual and continues in the alpine vistas up to the scree of the Col Fenêtre (2875m / 9,432.42 ft). Dominated by the imposing Ruitor glaciers, Valgrisenche offers spectacular views, where you can stop and enjoy the rewards of your uphill hike.

From the Col Fenêtre, it’s a fast and steep descent into the Val di Rhême. You’ll spend the night in the serene village of Rhême Notre Dame, nestled among towering peaks.

  • Hiking Details: ~ 15km (9.32miles), 1280m (4199.47 ft) ascent, 1175m (3854.98 ft) descent
  • Night: village of Rhême Notre Dame
  • Included: Breakfast and dinner

Day 2: Hike From Rhême Notre Dame – Plateau de Bénévolo – Rhême Notre Dame

Today, you’ll take a short bus ride to start hiking at Thumel, the hamlet that marks the end of the road, deep into the Gran Paradiso National Park. You’ll first hike on a wide trail that leads to a beautiful alpine valley. You’ll continue hiking to Benevolo Hut, where you can stop for a refreshment before continuing up into a “Dead End” alpine valley.

Hiking around Mount Truc de Tsanteleina provides a spectacular view. It almost seems like you can reach out and touch the glaciers with the vertical wall of the Granta Parei (11 110ft / 3,386.33m) proudly standing in front of you. Then you’ll hike back down to Thumel and take the shuttle bus back to the village of Rhême Notre Dame, where you’ll spend the night.

  • Hiking Details : ~16km (9.94miles), 1050m (3444.88 ft) ascent, 995m (3264.44 ft) descent

Day 3: Hike From Rhême Notre Dame – Col de l’Entrelor – Eaux-Rousses

Today, you’ll continue hiking on the trail following  Alta Via N°2. After crossing the “Doire de Rhême” the path climbs into the forest and joins the Entrelor mountain pastures. You’ll hike up the Entrelor Valley to reach the eponymous pass located at 3007 meters (9,865.49 ft) above sea level. From this point, the main chain of Gran Paradiso, you’re treated to an incredible view!

Then, you’ll begin a long descent into the Valsavarenche, but there are a few lakes that make for great rest stops and the mountain pastures of Djouan.

You’ll spend the night in the hamlet of Eaux-Rousses, where pristine alpine waters converge with ancient stone streets, offering an untouched retreat from the modern world.

  • Hiking Details: ~15km (9.32miles), 1280m (4199.47 ft) ascent, 1330m (4363.52 ft) descent
  • Night: Hamlet of Eaux-Rousses.
  • Inclusions: Breakfast and dinner

Day 4: Hike From Eaux-Rousses – Refuge F.Chabod – Pont – Eaux-Rousses

You’ll reach the starting point with a quick 10-minute transfer to take you to the Praviou Damon bus stop, where you’ll start hiking. The trail begins gently on switchbacks through a conifer forest, eventually rising up above the trees into open meadows of colorful wildflowers and sweeping views of the surrounding peaks.

You’ll reach  Rifugio Chabod (2750 m / 9,022.31 ft), which makes a great stop for lunch, then you’ll traverse along a high path that meanders over rocky terrain and alpine grassland beneath the moraines of the Gran Paradiso Glacier.

Along the way, keep an eye out for whistling marmots, chamois, and golden eagles.

You’ll then descend to the valley floor at Pont’s hamlet and return to the hotel in Eaux Rousses by shuttle bus.

  • Hiking Details: ~16km (9.94miles) / 1170m (3838.58 ft) ascent – 1040m (3412.07 ft) descent
  • Night: Eaux-Rousses

Day 5: Hike From Eaux-Rousses – Col du Lauson – Ref V. Sella

Today is a long day, so we recommend an early start. Directly from Eaux-Rousses, you’ll get back on the “Alta Via N°2” hiking trail to the alpine plateau of Levionnaz and Lauson Pass (3296m / 10,813.65 ft). It is the highest non-glacier pass in Gran Paradiso National Park!

Then, you’ll hike down a steep rocky section, a favourite spot for ibex, so keep your eyes peeled to reach the grassy alpine meadows, a favourite spot of chamois.

Soon after, you’ll reach Vittorio Sella Hut (2584m / 8,477.69 ft), where you’ll spend the night.

This is the longest climb of your Gran Paradiso hike, but it’s done on a very pleasant, winding, gradual trail. The elevation is indeed significant, but the effort is quite manageable.

  • Hiking Details: 17km (10.56miles), 1665m (5462.6 ft) ascent, 755m (2477.03 ft) descent
  • Night: Rifugio Vittorio Sella

Note: Even though there is a lot of elevation gain on today’s hike, it’s gradual. Locals even do this path with their bikes (not e-bikes, proper bikes)!

This hike is VERY beautiful. We also have an easy alternative hike for Day 5 if you want to rest the day before doing this long ascent.

Day 6: Hike From Ref V. Sella – Herbetet – Valnontey – Cogne

Today, you’ll hike on an impressive balcony route leading you to the bottom of the Herbetet Cirque near the eastern slope of the Grand Paradiso.

It’s a vast glacial cirque home to many glaciers and the major peaks of Valnontey. The descent reaches the eponymous hamlet of Valnontey. There’s a free shuttle bus from Valnontey to take you to the superb village of Cogne, where you’ll spend the night.

  • Hiking Details: 14km (8.69miles), 160m (524.93 ft) ascent, 1070m (3510.5 ft) descent
  • Night: village of Cogne
  • Inclusions: Breakfast

Day 7: Hike From Cogne – Lac de loie – Cogne (optional)

Lago de Loie makes for a nice rest stop on your Gran Paradiso Trekking tour

Lago de Loie makes for a nice rest stop on your Gran Paradiso Trekking tour

You’ll take a bus from Cogne to Lillaz, where you’ll start hiking. The trail cuts across a larch forest and then takes you to the Bardonney alpine valley. In this wild grazing pasture, time seems to have stopped. A short climb leads to a perfect viewpoint, and the panorama looks just like a postcard!

The trail continues across the hillside to Lac de Loie (7 720 ft / 2,353.056m), from where you can admire Mont Blanc… towering high in the distance!

On the way back down to the village, you’ll come across the spectacular Lillaz waterfall. A free shuttle bus takes you back to Cogne.

  • Hiking Details: ~12km (7.46miles), 870m (2854.33 ft) ascent, 870m (2854.33 ft) descent

VANOISE - GRAN PARADISO

tour grand paradis

Wild trek between two main National Parks

Founded in 1922, the Gran Paradiso National Park, first natural park in Italy and Europe, was created to protect wildlife and  remains a safe haven and protective area plants and animals including: chamois, ibex, marmot, fox and vultures. This park sits alongside its little brother in France,  the Vanoise National Park. Both of them together offer a protective area of over 1200 km2. Between the parks is a large natural mountainous barrier, traversed by high mountain passes. This tour makes the most of the rarely frequented wilderness and unmarked trails. A physical tour with basic mountain comfort offering a real immersion into this virgin mountain space.

You will like

The ascent begins with a superb mule track bordered by drystone walls in the heart of a larch forest, which eventually leads us to the Lavassey pasture (2194m). From there, the vegetation gradually disappears to give way to the alpine meadows in the heart of which is the Chabod hut (2,710 m). Night in the refuge. Elevation gain: 876m

Ascent of Gran Paradiso The day begins early, using the light from our headlamps we ascend gently along the imposing northwest face of Gran Paradiso to the Laveciau Glacier. At 3600m, we reach the Glacier du Grand Paradis and continue on the classic route. The last 50 vertiginous rocky metres, lead us to the summit (4,065m) from where we enjoy an exceptional view of the Alps. Descent to the Victor Emmanuel refuge (2,732 m) by the classic route where lunch awaits us. Night at the refuge.  Vertical gain: 1355m - Vertical drop: 1353m

Modification of the program in the event of bad weather conditions : If the weather on Day 2 is not compatible with the ascent of the Gran Paradiso, the modified program consists of reaching the Victor Emmanuel refuge by the panoramic path and attempting the ascent on Day 3. In this case, return to Chamonix in the middle of the afternoon.

Day 3 : Descent to Pragnieux We make our way back by a magnificent panoramic path, which offers many viewpoints of the Valsavarenche peaks. It brings us back below the Chabod refuge, from where we finish the descent by the same path we took the day before. Return to Chamonix by mid-day. Vertical drop: 898m

Bonne rando !

tour grand paradis

A wild and spectacular ski tour for experienced skiers, topping out at 4061 m! The Grand Paradiso National park is an unspoiled mountain treasure. Comfortable huts contrast the testing mountains!

Visit the Gran Paradiso National Park

Ski a 4000m peak, savour italian food and wine, remote five day ski tour summiting italy’s 4000m peak.

The summit of the Gran Paradiso was first climbed in 1860 by J. J. Cowell, W. Dundas, M-A. Payot and J. Tairraz. Over time it has become a landmark for beginner mountaineers, and climbing it will be an unforgettable day. The first ski tour was completed in 1932, and today’s route is the route taken by these pioneers.

Standing at 4 061m, the Gran Paradiso is a proud, solitary summit in the western Italian alps. Located in the Valle d'Aosta region, it is the only 4,000m peak not sharing a border with another country. It lends it's name to the massif (which is the only summit to exceed 4,000 meters) and to the national park.

The Gran Paradiso National Park was created in 1856 as the royal hunting reserve of King Vittorio Emanuele II , to protect the ibex,  and in 1922 became the first Italian national park. There is an abundance of wildlife in the park. Located between Piemonte and the Valle d'Aosta, it covers an area of 70,318 hectares and is a wild, wonderful environment for ski touring.

A 5-day circuit leaving from and returning to Cogne via the summit of the Gran Paradiso and the beautiful and wild valley of Piantonetto. We will enjoy legendary Italian food and hospitality, taking in this mythical mountain from a special and unique perspective.

We leave the skis at the base of the mountain ridge and follow it back and forth. The summit (4061 m), with it’s iconic virgin statue offers us a wonderful view of the Mont Blanc, Mont Rose, and the Matterhorn. A lovely ski from the top of Italy leads us to the famous Vittorio Emanuele II hut (2735 m).

Ascent 1310 m / Descent 1330 m / Time 6-8 hours

Day 5 Return to Cogne

Last and magnificent day of our tour. Climb to the Teleccio pass (3312 m) by the Homonymous glacier. A long descent on the Valeille glacier, and through the valley of Valeille leads us to the small village of Lillaz (1630 m), a hamlet of Cogne.

SKI YOUR FIRST 4000M PEAK

Skiing the Gran Paradiso (4061m), the highest peak entirely in Italy, is an incredible experience and one that should be on every skiers hit list. This is the perfect mountain for your first 4000m descent with just the right amount of challenge and natural topography that really lends itself to being a top ski touring region. The view from the Gran Paradiso itself is one of the best panoramas in the Alps and the descent on skis is one to remember. 90% of the ascent to the top of Gran Paradiso is on skis and there is a short, easy rocky scramble to the very top. This is a great progression from skiing the Haute Route or those with good ski touring ability as it requires a little more mountaineering skills and skiing at altitude. Our summer clients from our Mont Blanc + Gran Paradiso mountaineering program will know all about the final rocky scramble, it definitely gets the heart beating a little quicker than normal with its airy final step - but the views from the summit are definitely worth it!

YOUR ADVENTURE STARTS HERE

Who is this for.

This Gran Paradiso ski tour is ideal for skiers with previous ski touring/off piste experience who are keen to try their hand at multi day ski touring and a 4000m peak. Some previous experience of day tours is recommended. The days are long and the packs may be heavy, but the descents are excellent.

This tour will also appeal to the more seasoned ski tourer, as the terrain offers great skiing and great views, with the bonus of skiing the highest peak entirely in Italy. Not sure whether you're ready? No sweat! Drop us a note and we'll be happy to talk it through with you.

You will spend your first, second and last night of the trip here.

March until May is the best time for ski touring Gran Paradiso. By this time the crevasses are quite well filled in, meaning a safer ascent is possible, and the days are longer to allow for more time out in the mountains. Plus the sun normally shines a little warmer at this time of year, perfect for catching a tan on the terrace of the mountain huts after a good days skiing.

MEET THE GUIDES

Ifmga guide.

Miha is an IFMGA guide from Slovenia based between the beautiful Julian Alps and Chamonix. He has been climbing for over 20 years all over the world, including expeditions to Nepal, Tibet, India, Pakistan, USA, Mexico and Peru. He summited an 8000er on his first expedition to the Himalaya, did a first ascent on the previously unclimbed Lasher peak in the Himalaya and climbed El Capitan and many routes over the Alps.

Pablo is originally from a small mountain village in Spain and came to Chamonix with only one dream to become a mountain guide. Based in Chamonix since 2013, Pablo made the Alps his playground as a guide and as an alpinist and has climbed many of the classic alpine routes. He combines mountain guiding with helicopter rescue work in Spain during the off seasons.

Roger has spent over 15 years guiding around the world. He is a Guide instructor at the Spanish School of Guides and is fascinated by discovering mountains with clients. Roger has a big passion about showing people his beloved mountains and sharing climbs and descents with skis.

Lars is a IFMGA Guide originally from Belgium, with over 20 years of experience climbing and splitboarding in the Mont Blanc massif, the Alps and the greater ranges of the world. Having lived in Chamonix for over a decade he has enjoyed the unique and unlimited climbing possibilities in and around the valley. Lars is also one of the most recognised and experienced splitboard guides leading expeditions to Kamchatka, Greenland, Iceland and more.

"My favorite mountain is the Midi d’Ossau, in the Pyrenees. It is a volcanic and unique mountain, that a stands out from the other peaks around. It is a huge fortress with many different features that provides incredible rock climbing routes, and the most important thing is that is 20 minutes from my house ;)"

"If asked about my favourite mountain or mountain range, it wouldn't be easy to answer since perfect places to climb, ski or explore can be found all over the world. But, if I had to choose one, I think I'd say the Pyrenees, not very high, but wild and still quite unknown: the mountains where I learnt when I was a child and where I can still live great adventures far from the crowd".
