Reinventing libraries in era of crises

Libraries seminar

By Michael R. Malone [email protected] 03-23-2024

Kelly Miller , the associate dean for Learning and Research Services at the University of Miami Libraries , and Guayana Paez-Acosta, a well-being community colleague, offered a bilingual webinar on March 20 that outlined how campus libraries have implemented new mindfulness and well-being programs to address the uptick in stress, anxiety, and depression in an era of climate and other crises.

“As libraries are reinventing themselves, moving beyond [simply being] repositories of books, you can make the case that libraries are actually realizing their tree-like qualities and becoming sites of presence and balance and care for life itself,” Miller said.

“By offering mindfulness meditation and well-being programs intended to support mental health and connection with self and others, libraries can become for campus communities what trees are for life itself, sending out nutrients to the life around them and in turn, receiving nourishment and support through deepening connection and care,” added Miller, the University Libraries newly appointed director of mindfulness and well-being programs.

Hosted by the Network of Libraries of the Hemispheric University Consortium, "The Library's Role in Building Community Well-being and Resilience in an Era of Climate Crisis" webinar attracted viewers from across the Americas and from as far away as Vietnam. The program included research, mindfulness exercises, and a case study of the University’s strategic focus of the past few years.

At a “time of collective heartbreak” related to the climate and other crises, university libraries are committed to exploring how their efforts and programming might relate to United Nations sustainability goals, Miller said.

She shared her own story that led her to embrace mindfulness practices and outlined the University of Miami Libraries’ implementation of programs geared to address the growing mental health problems in the United States, and especially on campuses. The initiative launched an expanded offering of virtual resources during the pandemic.

“Over the past eight years as part of a strategic strategy, University Libraries has developed a series of programs, especially evolving around mindfulness and well-being practices, that complement our existing learning and research services—and have helped us to fully realize our role at the heart of the campus,” Miller explained.

Some of the seeds of those programs can be seen in stress-relieving activities usually around exam time that are now offered weekly as part of the expanded mental health programming, Miller said.

Last year, University Libraries piloted its new “Breathe and Be” program, inspired by Miller’s association with Kincentric , a holistic leadership institute. The program, which incorporates movement, meditation, and helps to deepen personal practices, is being offered this spring.

Crises such as the climate emergency have prompted librarians such as Miller and other faculty to ask and anticipate how curricula should change. One change has been toward the emerging interdisciplinary curriculum on campuses—a focus at the University reflected in the new Climate Resilience Academy .

“We anticipate that mindfulness and well-being sessions may support these emerging curricula, so we are preparing for that and beginning to work with the leaders of the Climate Resilience Academy,” Miller explained.

Paez-Acosta, an entrepreneur, facilitator, local meditation teacher, and founder of Athena Lab for Social Change, collaborated with Miller to explain the directives in Spanish.

The City of Ulyanovsk

miami university campus tour

Foundation «Ulyanovsk Capital of Culture»

Our beautiful city of Simbirsk was founded in 1648, and in 1924 it was renamed Ulyanovsk in honor of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin), who was born here. It is located in the European part of Russia, 890 km southeast of Moscow on the two banks of the longest river in Europe – the Volga. The population of the city is 625 thousand people, the population of the Ulyanovsk region is more than 1,2 million people.

The ARCHITECTURE OF THE CitY and the landscape

Today it is a city of contrasts : with its ancient wooden buildings of the 19th century and modern residential complexes; it is a museum city telling about tsarist and Soviet Russia, and the Russian Silicon Valley; it is the birthplace of such opposites as Alexander Kerensky and Vladimir Lenin – the leaders of the February and October Revolutions;

Foundation ULYANOVSK - CAPITAL OF CULTURE_PHOTO 3_poster 3

Ulyanovsk is a city where two rivers, the Volga and Sviyaga, flowing in the opposite direction, form the “interfluve” – a territory unique in its energy…

If desired, you can walk from the center of Ulyanovsk almost to the very outskirts of the city – the only inconvenience may be windy weather, which is not uncommon here, because Ulyanovsk is called the “City of Seven Winds” for a reason. However, this phenomenon has its undeniable plus – despite the fact that the industry is quite developed, the air even in the city center is always clean.

miami university campus tour

It is because of this feature of our city that the first wind farm in Russia was built in Ulyanovsk in 2018, the second one was launched in 2019. Today, in a cloudless weather, 28 windmills can be seen from the other bank of the river. Due to wind energy, about 8 percent of the Ulyanovsk region’s electricity needs are replenished, and more than 70 thousand households in the region are provided. In addition to wind energy, the region is also building up competencies in solar and hydrogen energy, microgeneration, and energy storage issues.

The "Presidential Bridge"

A walk along the Embankment as well as a river walk will allow you to appreciate the expanse and grandeur of the Russian Volga River and admire panoramas, including the legendary railway “Imperial Bridge”, built in 1913 under Emperor Nicholas II, and also the modern engineering structure “Presidential Bridge” – one of the longest bridges in Europe, the third longest bridge in Russia. The embankment boulevard is the location of a number of interesting historical buildings and monuments such as a monument to the letter “Ё” created by Nikolay Karamzin, a famous Russian historian, author of “The History of the Russian State” who was also born in Ulyanovsk.

Gastronomic specialities

The gastronomic highlights of the Ulyanovsk land can be called  dishes of Volga cuisine  – stuffed Volga fish (catfish, walleye, pike) and traditional pancakes. The local mineral water with a high content of organic substances, which has unique healing properties, is also a unique feature of our region.

Points of cultural interest

The birthplace of vladimir lenin.

Ulyanovsk can definitely be called a museum city . The State Historical and Memorial Museum-Reserve “The Birthplace of Vladimir Lenin” is a unique urban-landscape complex, occupying 174 hectares in the central part of the city and combining within its borders the historical, architectural and memorial monuments of Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk. Currently, 17 museums are located on the territory of this open-air museum. Museums that are part of this Museum-Reserve, are unique and inimitable by themselves, but seen and understood as a whole, they allow a modern person to immerse themselves into the atmosphere of the old city, to feel the rhythm of life and the aroma of the past.

A part of the Museum-Reserve, the museum “Simbirsk Classic Gymnasia” is the only museum in Russia that completely reproduces the atmosphere of the Russian classic gymnasia of the second half of the 19th century. The exposition includes authentic materials, including the globe of the starry sky, the hemisphere map dated by 1841, and educational instruments. Lenin Memorial representing the authentic heritage that retells the history of our country in the 20th century will impress you with its scale.

Ivan Goncharov

In 2015, Ulyanovsk was the first Russian city to receive the status of the UNESCO City of Literature . “The Literary map” of modern Ulyanovsk has more than forty streets and alleys bearing the names of writers, poets and literary critics. The city is the birthplace of such famous Russian writers as Ivan Goncharov, Nikolay Karamzin, Nikolay Yazykov, etc. Ivan Goncharov is perhaps the brightest personality of the entire constellation of famous citizens of Simbirsk. Every schoolchild is familiar with his works, which have become masterpieces of Russian classical literature: “Oblomov”, “The Ordinary History”, “The Cliff”… Lazy Oblomov is one of the most popular characters of Russian literature among the young people of the world. The most famous of the so-called “Goncharov places” is Goncharov Historical and Memorial Center Museum, which keeps a memorial exposition of the writer and the heroes of his works and is located on the most central street of the city also named in his honor.

the geopark “Undoria”

The Ulyanovsk region is a land of unique natural diversity. Here you can take a trip to the geopark “Undoria” – an amazing paleontological world with a unique nature frozen in time several thousand years ago. On its territory, you can get acquainted with the remains of aquatic dinosaurs and ammonites. At the end of this September, the skeletons of two unknown before species of ichthyosaurs were discovered. This year, the Undoria Geopark has applied to join the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.

Sengiley Mountains National Park

The Ulyanovsk region is the only place on the planet where the rare gemstone Simbircite was discovered. Even a monument to simbircite was erected in Ulyanovsk since it got its name from the old name of Ulyanovsk – Simbirsk. It is not very expensive, classified as ornamental, but simbircite looks unordinary, and its bright color and rich pattern attract attention. It is extremely hard to be found in jewelry stores since this stone is little known, and rare specialists outside of Russia know about it.

Another place in the Ulyanovsk region, where paleontological remains of ancient creatures have been preserved, is the Sengiley Mountains National Park . Tens of millions of years ago, the Sengiley Mountains were born in the depths of the ancient sea. Under the influence of the internal forces of the Earth, they eventually rose and carried out the fossilized remains of their former inhabitants on their slopes. Arriving there, you can contemplate the incredible beauty of the landscapes of hilly terrain with chalk deposits, adjacent to the picturesque bank of the Volga River.

“Skripinsky Kuchury”

There is a unique natural stone garden “Skripinsky Kuchury” in the Ulyanovsk region. The total area of the territory is 204 hectares.  There are many legends around the Skripinsky Kuchury. According to one of them, aliens once lived here, but at one point they left the territory forever. Some even say that during construction work in the 1980s, workers discovered several giant skeletons with large skulls. And on the bizarre stones, ufologists found notches corresponding to the map of the Universe.

Narrow-leaved peony:“the Scarlet flower”

On the territory of the Ulyanovsk region, an amazingly beautiful and rare plant has been preserved – a Narrow-leaved peony . It is listed in the Red Book of Russia. You can see the flowering of a wild peony only a few days a year in the middle of May. According to many, it is “the Scarlet flower” from the Russian version of “The Beauty and the Beast” written by Sergey Aksakov whose name is inextricably linked with the Simbirsk province. In the places of peony blossoms in the Ulyanovsk region, a festival dedicated to this magical symbol is held every year: girls and boys in Russian national costumes weave wreaths and dance in a clearing full of blooming peonies.

international transport hub

Ulyanovsk is a major international transport hub . It is located at the intersection of aviation, railway and automobile communications in all directions of Russia, as well as international air lines connecting the Volga region with Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East and China. There are 2 major international airports, a railway station, a river port capable of receiving river-sea vessels, 2 automobile and 1 railway bridge over the Volga River.

Today, there are about 200 IT companies operating in the Ulyanovsk region, at least 50 of which have serious weight at the global level. In the near future, the creation and launch of the International BRICS IT Valley is planned on the territory of the Ulyanovsk region.

Furniture manufacturing, farming and other traditional business spheres are also well developed.

Balalaika Museum

The Balalaika Museum is the first and only Balalaika Museum in Russia. It exhibits a unique collection of the rarest instruments of the 19th-20th centuries there. The history of Balalaika crafts in Russia, the study of the culture of Russian instrumental performance, the search and recording of samples of traditional instrumental music – all this can be found there.
