Train travel in europe..., train travel in asia..., train travel in africa..., train travel in america..., train travel in australasia, uk to finland without flying.

It's easy to travel from London to Helsinki by train and ferry, a wonderful 2-day 3-night journey across Scandinavia with a lot to see on the way.  It's a great alternative to an unnecessary flight.  On this page you'll find a step-by-step guide to planning, booking & making a journey from the UK to Finland by train or ferry, with train & ferry timetables, approximate fares, and the best way to buy tickets.

Train times, fares & tickets

small bullet point

Useful country information

Which route should you choose .

There are several good options for reaching Finland in comfort without flying:

Option 1 , London to Helsinki using the Hamburg-Stockholm sleeper

Option 2 , London to Helsinki via Stockholm with overnight stops

This also follows the route shown in red on the route map below , but instead of sleepers & overnight ferries it uses daytime trains with an overnight hotel stop in Hamburg and Stockholm.  That means it's not as time-effective as option 1, it takes 3 days & 2 nights and if you want any time in Hamburg or Stockholm you'll have to add a day.  But if you prefer day trains and hotels to sleepers & ferry cabins, this is the option to take.  Times, fares & how to buy tickets are shown below .

Option 3 , London to Helsinki by train to Hamburg then ferry from Travemünde to Finland

Take a morning Eurostar to Brussels & onward trains to Hamburg, spend the night there before taking a local train to Travemünde and the daily Finnlines ferry from Travemünde to Helsinki.  This route is shown in dark blue on the route map below .  Times, fares & how to buy tickets are shown below .

Option 1 :  London to Stockholm using the Hamburg-Stockholm sleeper

This is easily the nicest way from the UK to Helsinki & Finland, taking 2 days, 3 nights, including an afternoon at leisure in Hamburg and the best part of a day to explore Stockholm and its amazing Vasa museum .  It includes a ride on a sleeper train from Hamburg to Stockholm and the highlight is a cruise across the Baltic from Stockholm to Helsinki, past the many beautiful islands.  In the inbound direction this option takes just 48 hours, still with a day to explore Stockholm.

London ► Helsinki

Day 2, travel from Brussels to Hamburg, leaving Brussels Midi at 08:23 (08:25 weekends), change at Cologne Hbf , arriving Hamburg Hbf 15:14.

Silja Line also operates a transfer bus from Stockholm Cityterminal (next to Stockholm Central ) to the terminal, buy tickets from the ticket machines or from the driver, check times at the Silja Line website.  Or you can take a taxi.

At the Värtahamnen terminal, check-in for the ferry is painless:  Walk up to one of the self-service check-in machines, click the touch screen for English, scan the ferry ticket barcode on your phone or printout, click to confirm and out pops your ferry boarding pass which is also your cabin key.  Go through the automatic gates using the boarding pass and walk onto the ferry.

In Helsinki, it's an easy 1.8 km 23-minute walk from Silja Line's Olympia ferry terminal to Helsinki station.  Or if you walk out of the terminal and turn right, you'll see the tram terminus for trams 2 & 3.  Buy a ticket from the machine using a contactless bank card, tram 2 will get you to a stop in the city centre a block away from Helsinki station, tram 3 takes a slightly longer route but goes to the tram stop right outside Helsinki station.  Helsinki's iconic cathedral is a 1.3 km 16-minute walk from the ferry terminal.

Helsinki ► London

Silja Line ( www.tallinksilja.com ) offers a luxurious overnight cruise ferry direct from Helsinki to Stockholm every day, sailing from Helsinki Olympia Terminal at 17:00 arriving in Stockholm Värtahamnen at about 09:45 next morning, after sailing past the many islands.

A range of comfortable cabins is available.  Map of Helsinki showing Silja terminal .

Day 2, travel from Stockholm to Hamburg by sleeper train, leaving Stockholm Central at 17:34 and arriving Hamburg Hbf at 06:00.

Day 3, travel from Hamburg to Brussels by train, leaving Hamburg Hbf at 08:45, change at Cologne Hbf , arriving Brussels Midi at 15:35.

You travel on comfortable ICE trains with restaurant car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi.

Tip:   Allow at least 1 hour between trains in Hamburg when connecting out of the sleeper, ideally 1-2 hours.

Tip:   An earlier arrival is possible using Eurostar (formerly Thalys) between Cologne & Brussels, but I recommend using the trains shown above as this gets you (a) a cheaper price and (b) a through ticket with cast-iron passenger rights in the event of a delay and missed connection in Cologne.

How much does it cost?

London to Brussels by Eurostar starts at £52 one-way or £78 return in standard class, £97 one-way, £140 return standard premier (1st class).

Hamburg to Stockholm by sleeper train starts at €44.90 with a couchette in 6-berth, €69.90 with a couchette in 4-berth, €79.90 with a bed in a 2-bed sleeper or €164.90 with a single-bed sleeper all to yourself.  All prices per person per bed.

Stockholm to Helsinki by direct overnight ferry starts from around €88 including a bed in a shared 4-berth with Viking Line or €111 with sole occupancy of a cabin with Silja Line.  But there are whole range of cabin types and prices, just check both ferry company websites.

All these fares are dynamic, varying like air fares, so book ahead.

How to buy tickets

Step 1, book London to Brussels by Eurostar at www.eurostar.com .

Tip:   If returning, book Eurostar as a round trip, because unlike most other European trains, a return ticket costs less than two one-ways.

Step 2, book Brussels to Hamburg at the German Railways website int.bahn.de .

Booking opens up to 6 months ahead .  You print your own ticket or can show it on your laptop or phone.  I recommend registering when prompted, so you can log on at any time and check or reprint tickets.

Step 3, book Hamburg-Stockholm sleeper tickets at the Swedish Railways website www.sj.se .

What's the journey like?

1. London to Brussels by Eurostar

Eurostar trains link London & Brussels in just 2 hours, travelling at up to 300 km/h (186 mph).  There are two bar cars, power sockets at all seats and free WiFi.  Standard Premier and Business Premier fares include a light meal with wine (or breakfast, on departures before 11:00).  There's a 30-minute minimum check-in as all border formalities are carried out before you board the train.  More about Eurostar including check-in procedure .  St Pancras station guide .   Brussels Midi station guide & short cut for changing trains in Brussels .

2. Brussels to Cologne by ICE3, Cologne to Hamburg by ICE4

Germany's superb ICEs have a bistro-restaurant car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi.  In 1st class, bistro orders are taken at your seat.  50 minutes after leaving Brussels the ICE calls at Liège, where you can admire the impressive station designed by celebrity architect Santiago Calatrava.  As you approach Cologne Hbf you'll see the twin towers of Cologne Cathedral on the right, next to the station.  More about ICE trains .  Brussels Midi station guide .  Cologne Hbf station guide .  Hamburg Hbf station guide .

Run by SJ (Swedish Railways), this EuroNight train normally has one or sometimes two sleeping-cars, two or sometimes three couchette cars and two seats cars.  Each sleeping-car has 14 narrow standard compartments with washbasin which can be sold as single or double, plus two deluxe compartments with shower & toilet which can be sold as single, double or triple.  The couchettes come in 6-berth compartments.  The seats cars have 6-seat compartments, but you should always book a couchette or sleeper if you can.  The sleepers convert to private sitting rooms for evening or morning use, the couchettes convert to seats.  Limited food & drink (including beer & wine) can be ordered from the train staff, you can see the menu at www.sj.se/en/travel-info/sj-euronight.html .  A simple breakfast box with jam, butter, rolls, yoghurt and a tea or coffee is included in the sleepers and can be ordered the night before in the couchettes.  Unlike most other European night trains, as this train is Swedish you are not permitted to consume your own alcohol.  More photos & information about the Hamburg-Stockholm sleeper train .

5. Stockholm to Helsinki by overnight ferry

An Silja Line ferry links Stockholm with Helsinki overnight every day, and a Viking Line ferry sails overnight to a similar schedule every second day.  It's a much more relaxed affair than the Stockholm-Turku route.  You can board an hour an a half before sailing rather than 15 minutes before, the ferry sails late afternoon so you have a whole evening on the ship, and there's time for a lie-in and leisurely breakfast with a late-morning arrival.  The facilities on board are top-class, from the Grande Buffet to the Lobster restaurant.  A full range of cabins is available, including suites.

Option 2, London to Helsinki with overnight stops

You travel from London to Hamburg by Eurostar & onward trains on day 1, stay overnight in Hamburg, then travel from Hamburg to Stockholm on day 2.  Take a bottle of wine and a good book, and enjoy a 2-day train ride across Europe on modern & comfortable trains with not an airport security queue in sight.  Stay overnight in Stockholm then take the daytime ferry+train service to Helsinki next day.  Or spend the day exploring Stockholm and take the overnight cruise ferry to Helsinki with a comfortable en suite cabin reserved.  What's the journey like?

Leave London St Pancras at 09:01, change Brussels Midi & Cologne Hbf , arriving Hamburg Hbf 19:14.

Leave London St Pancras at 11:04, change Brussels Midi & Cologne Hbf , arriving Hamburg Hbf 21:14.

Leave Hamburg Hbf at 08:50 arriving Copenhagen 13:34.  Leave Copenhagen at 14:19, arriving Stockholm Central 19:37.

Viking Line ( www.sales.vikingline.com ) sails from Stockholm Stadsgården terminal at 07:45 every day, arriving in Turku at 19:50.

The luxurious Viking Grace or Viking Glory has a range of standard & deluxe cabins, restaurants, bars and lounges.  A cabin is optional on the day crossing, but I recommend one as somewhere to nap, shower, relax in private.  See map of Stockholm showing ferry terminals .  How to reach Stockholm's Viking Line terminal .

In Turku, it's just 100m from the Viking Line terminal to Turku Port station, see map .

A connecting double-deck InterCity train leaves Turku Port (Turku Satama) station at 20:25 & arrives at Helsinki station at 22:56.

This is a boat train specifically timed to connect with the ferry from Stockholm.  It has Eko (2nd) & Ekstra (1st) class, a bistro, playroom & various seating options, see more about this Intercity train .

Update:  For 2 years from Autumn 2022, a bus will replace the train between Turku Port & Kupittaa (east Turku), but the bus is well-signed & well-organised.  The bus leaves from the car park next to Turku Port station platforms.  More about this Intercity train .

Alternatively, spend the day in Stockholm and take the direct ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki as in option 1.

Turku to Helsinki by train costs starts at €7.90 in Eco (2nd) class or €18.80 in Ekstra (1st) class booked in advance.

You can check sailing dates & prices for both Viking Line & Silja Line ferries on both the Stockholm-Turku & Stockholm-Helsinki routes at the Direct Ferries website .  Remember to select '18+' for adults and change With vehicle to No vehicle .  The price you initially see is for a basic passenger place on the ferry, you can add a cabin at the next stage.  When you book online you will be emailed a confirmation which you present at check-in to exchange for your boarding pass.

4. Hamburg to Copenhagen by EuroCity train

As from June 2023, Hamburg-Copenhagen trains are operated by former German Railways intercity cars like this, now shown in the timetable as EC for EuroCity .  This is only temporary, as brand-new trains being built for DSB will be delivered in 2024.  These ex-DB intercity cars have power sockets at all seats (although no WiFi).  There's no catering car, so bring your own food & drink.  More about the Hamburg-Copenhagen journey .

On 17 June 2023, the first Copenhagen to Hamburg train to use the 'new' German intercity cars is boarding at Copenhagen.  Photo courtesy of Peter Kincey .

2nd class seats in are almost all open-plan like this.  There are a handful of 6-seat 2nd class compartments in one of the coaches.

The 1st class car has 6-seater compartments like this. Larger photo .  Larger photo .

Crossing the Little Belt ( Lillebælt in Danish) from Jutland (mainland Denmark) to Funen, the island on which Odense is located.

5. Copenhagen to Stockholm by X2000

These Swedish 200km/h (125mph) tilting trains link Copenhagen & Stockholm in just a few hours, centre to centre.  They cross from Denmark to Sweden over the Oresund Link, a combined tunnel and bridge.  On the bridge section you seem to be flying just feet above the water. More about X2000 trains .

6. Stockholm to Turku by cruise ferry & train to Helsinki

There is both a day service and a night service between Stockholm & Helsinki using the Stockholm-Turku Viking Line ferries.

Option 3, London to Helsinki via Travemünde

This leisurely option runs every day and takes 3 nights outward to Helsinki, just 2 nights inward back to London.  In the outward direction it includes a day at leisure exploring Hamburg, too.  Take a morning Eurostar to Brussels and onward trains to Hamburg, and stay overnight.  After a day exploring Hamburg, transfer by local train to Travemünde on Germany's Baltic coast, then take the daily Finnlines ferry from Travemünde to Helsinki, a 2-night cruise.  This route is shown on the route map above in red between London & Hamburg and in dark blue between Hamburg & Helsinki.

At Lübeck Hbf, leave the station and follow the signs to the ZOB bus station 100m away.  Lübeck is a good place for dinner with plenty of bars & restaurants in the old town 5 minutes walk from the station.

Now take bus 30 from Lübeck ZOB bus station to Travemünde Skandinavienkai Terminal (this is the stop before Travemünde Skandinavienkai - Bahnhof Skandinavienkai ).  The bus ride takes 30 minutes, the last bus goes around 21:00.

You can check journey times from Hamburg to Travemünde Skandinavienkai Terminal at the German Railways website, just use this link to bahn.de as it has the bus times in its database as well as the trains, or you can find bus information at www.xn--sv-lbeck-95a.de .

Alternatively, take a frequent local train from Hamburg Hbf to Lübeck Hbf, then a frequent local train to Travemünde Skandinavienkai Bahnhof, Lübeck from where the ferry terminal is an 8-minute taxi ride or a 34-minute 2.8 km walk.

Helsinki's Hansa Ferry Terminal in Vuosaari harbour is 16 km east of central Helsinki, see map of Helsinki showing Vuosaari .

For example, the first departure leaves Hamburg Hbf at 06:45, change at Cologne Hbf & Brussels Midi to arrive London St Pancras at 16:57.

Hamburg to Travemünde by local train & bus costs around €19 each way.

Travemünde to Helsinki by Finnlines ferry costs between €120 and €155 (£95-£120) each way in a reclining seat depending on the day and season.  However, I recommend a cabin.  The fare including a bed in a 3-bed shared inside cabin is between €200 and €287 each way.  The fare including a bed in a 2-bed outside cabin is between €279 and €413 each way.  Children under 6 go free, and there are reduced fares for children 6 to 12 and youth fares for children 13-17.  See the fares at www.finnlines.com or the Direct Ferries website .

It takes several websites so it's best to try a dry-run on all of them first to check prices and availability before booking for real.  Here's how it's done:

2. Brussels to Cologne & Cologne to Hamburg by ICE

More about ICE3 trains .  Brussels Midi station guide .  Cologne Hbf station guide .  Hamburg Hbf station guide

3. Transfer from Hamburg to Travemünde & sail to Helsinki by Finnlines ferry

The ship has comfortable cabins with private shower & toilet, satellite TV & WiFi (paid for), cafe-restaurant, shop, bar, sundeck, gym and a free sauna

Travel insurance & other tips

Always take out travel insurance.

You should take out travel insurance with at least £1m or preferably £5m medical cover from a reliable insurer.  It should cover trip cancellation and loss of cash & belongings up to a reasonable limit.  These days, check you're covered for covid-19-related issues, and use an insurer whose cover isn't invalidated by well-meant but excessive Foreign Office travel advice against non-essential travel. An annual policy is usually cheapest even for just 2 or 3 trips a year, I have an annual policy with Staysure.co.uk myself.  Don't expect travel insurance to bail you out of every missed connection, see the advice on missed connections here .  Here are some suggested insurers, I get a little commission if you buy through these links, feedback always welcome.

Get an eSIM with mobile data package

Don't rely on WiFi, download an eSIM with a European mobile data package and stay connected.  Most newer mobile phones can download a virtual SIM including iPhone 11 & later, see device compatibility list .  There's no need to buy a physical SIM card!  Maya.net is a reliable eSIM data retailer with a 4.5 out of 5 Trustpilot rating and a range of packages including unlimited data .

Get a Curve card for foreign travel

Most banks give you a poor exchange rate then add a foreign transaction fee on top.  A Curve MasterCard means no foreign transaction fees and gives you the mid-market exchange rate, at least up to a certain limit, £500 per month as I write this.  The money you spend on your Curve card goes straight onto one of your existing debit or credit cards.  And you can get a Curve card for free.

How it works:   1. Download the Curve app for iPhone or Android .  2. Enter your details & they'll send you a Curve MasterCard - they send to the UK and most European addresses.  3. Link your existing credit & debit cards to the app, you can link up to two cards with the free version of Curve, I link my normal debit card and my normal credit card.  4. Now use the Curve MasterCard to buy things online or in person or take cash from ATMs, exactly like a normal MasterCard. Curve does the currency conversion and puts the balance in your own currency onto whichever debit or credit card is currently selected in the Curve app.  You can even change your mind about which card it goes onto, within 14 days of the transaction.

I have a Curve Blue card myself, it means I can buy a coffee on a foreign station on a card without being stung by fees and lousy exchange rates, just by tapping the Curve card on their card reader.  The money goes through Curve to my normal debit card and is taken directly from my account (in fact I have the Curve card set up as payment card on Apple Pay on my iPhone, so can double-click my phone, let it do Face ID then tap the reader with the phone - even easier than getting a card out).  I get a little commission if you sign up to Curve, but I recommend it here because I think it's great.  See details, download the app and get a Curve card , they'll give you £5 cashback through that link.

Get a VPN for safe browsing.  Why you need a VPN

When travelling you may use free public WiFi which is often insecure.  A VPN encrypts your connection so it's always secure, even on unsecured WiFi.  It also means you can select the geographic location of the IP address you browse with, to get around geoblocking which a surprising number of websites apply.  See VPNs & why you need one explained .  ExpressVPN is a best buy with a 4.7 out of 5 Trustpilot ranking which I use myself - I've signed up as an ExpressVPN affiliate, and if you go with expressvpn.com using this link you should see a special deal, 3 months free with an annual subscription.  I also get some commission to help support this site.

Carry an Anker powerbank

Tickets, reservations, hotel bookings and Interrail or Eurail passes are often now held on your mobile phone.  You daren't let it run out of power, and you can't always rely on the phone's internal battery or on being near a power outlet.  I always carry an Anker powerbank which can recharge my phone several times over.  Buy from Amazon.co.uk or Buy from Amazon.com .

Touring cities?  Use hill walking shoes!

One of the best things I've done is swap my normal shoes for hill-walking shoes, in my case from Scarpa.  They're intended for hiking across the Pennines not wandering around Florence, but the support and cushioning for hiking works equally well when you're on your feet all day exploring foreign cities.  My feet used to give out first and limit my day, now the rest of me gives up before they do!

How to Get from Helsinki Airport to Helsinki City Centre by Train

travel to helsinki by train

Out of all the travelling that I have done within Europe during the last few years, the train journey from Helsinki Vantaa Airport to Helsinki city centre is definitely one of the easiest, cheapest as well as one of the most user-friendly forms of transportation I have ever used and is by far the best way to travel after arriving in Helsinki. During my visit, I took lots of photos and have written lots of up to date information, directions and instructions in this blog post to help anyone planning their own trip to Finland. Helsinki Vantaa Airport is located 20km from the centre of Helsinki and the airport train station is located underground between Terminals 1 and 2. After leaving baggage reclaim and customs, just follow the signs for Railway Station / Rautatieasema / Järnvägsstation and do not worry as the entire walk is inside so you do not need to go outside during the freezing cold winter months. You also do not need to worry about getting lost – it really is so simple and all of the signs are predominately in English (as well as in Finnish and Swedish) so it is impossible to go wrong. Our flight arrived into Terminal 2 and the walk from baggage reclaim and customs to the train station took just over five minutes. There are also toilets on the way to the station in case you need to use them before getting on the train to the city.

travel to helsinki by train

After following the Railway Station / Rautatieasema / Järnvägsstation signs, you will reach a series of two escalators (with a walkway between them) that will take you down to the train station itself. There are also elevators available if you have any larger bags or strollers with you.

travel to helsinki by train

Once on the platform you will see several ticket machines in the centre of the platform in front of you – you can use either these or the HSL App on your phone to buy your train tickets to travel into Helsinki. We used the machines on the platform to buy our train tickets when we arrived in Helsinki and the HSL App (we both downloaded it before travelling to Finland) to buy the tickets for our return journey a few days later. I have included full instructions of how to buy tickets using the HSL App later in this blog post.

travel to helsinki by train

Helsinki is split into different zones and as Vantaa Airport is located in Zone C and the city centre is in Zone A, you will need to buy an ABC ticket – and there are also signs along the walk to the station to tell you this. See I told you that it was easy! The ticket machines can be used in Finnish as well as in English and Swedish. After selecting which language you want to use on the first screen: Select “Helsinki City Center / ABC” Select how many Adult/Child tickets you would like to purchase.

travel to helsinki by train

As of October 2021 the current ABC single ticket fares are: Adult €4.10 Child (7-17) €2.10 Child (Aged 0-6) Free of Charge There is no price difference to buying tickets on the machines at the station or on the HSL App. You can pay for your tickets with Credit Card (Visa and Mastercard only) or by cash and all ABC tickets are valid for 90 mins from time of purchase.

travel to helsinki by train

There are two platforms at the train station – one for the P Train and one for the I Train and you can take either train as they both travel to Helsinki Central Station. The only difference is the P Train and the I Train travel in opposite directions in a loop from the city centre via Helsinki Airport and take different routes along the way. Whilst it does not matter what train you take from the airport, the P Train is slightly quicker but as they both go to the same place, take whichever train arrives first – again I told you it was really easy. Also do not worry if the information screen above the platform briefly says Helsingfors as that is just the Swedish name for Helsinki. The travel time from Helsinki Vantaa Airport to Helsinki Central Station is: P Train – 28 Minutes I Train – 33 Minutes Trains usually run every ten minutes during the day so you will not have to wait for long for the next train if you just miss one. You can find the timetable here – make sure to check what time the first and last trains are especially if travelling early in the day or late at night.

travel to helsinki by train

Once onboard the train there are no dedicated luggage storage areas by the doors but there are racks above the seats and you can simply keep any larger bags on the floor next to you throughout the journey – just try not to block any of the aisles. There are also power points to charge your phone and you will be able to follow the journey on the television screens throughout the carriages and there are also announcements (including in English) at each stop. There are occasionally spot checks by ticket inspectors so make sure to keep your ticket handy throughout the entire journey just in case you are asked for it – we were asked to show our tickets on our return journey at Helsinki Central Station before being allowed to enter the platform and board the train. After arriving at Helsinki Central Station, you can use your ticket to transfer onto the metro, bus or tram (or even the Suomenlinna Ferry) as it is valid for 90 minutes after purchase.

travel to helsinki by train

It is also incredibly easy to buy train tickets using the HSL App . We bought our tickets for the return journey back to Helsinki Vantaa Airport using the App a few days later and it was a very quick and simple to do. To buy tickets from Helsinki Central Station to Helsinki Airport using the HSL App simply: Select “Single Ticket” and then choose “ABC” in the Travel Zone drop down list – you can also add the Departure and Destination stations if you prefer but going by Zone is much quicker and easier as you already know what ticket you need. Then select either Adult or Child and the time that you would like the ticket to be valid from – you can choose either “Now” or any time in the next twenty four hours. In the Payment Method box, add your credit card details (you can use Visa, Mastercard or American Express) and click continue. The QR code for your ticket will show in the App and you can then purchase any additional tickets for anyone else travelling with you if they do not have their own mobile device.

travel to helsinki by train

To get back to the airport from Helsinki Central Station, you simply need to take either the P Train or the I Train once again. On the information screens, as well as the letters P and I, you can also look for the names Lentoasema / Flygplatsen / Airport – they all mean the same thing but the screens continuously change between Finnish, Swedish and English. There will also be an airplane logo next to each train going to the airport.

Thanks for this! It is really useful! We are planning a trip to Finland and arrive at helsinki Airport (with 3 young kids in tow!) at 9:10pm. We need to be at helsinki train station for 11:10pm departure on the night train to Rovaniemi. Do you think this will be doable or are we going to be pushing it for time?! Your instructions look straightforward but I’m nervous it’ll all go wrong!

' src=

Hi Anna and thank you for your comment. It is definitely doable as I just checked the time stamps on my photos and we arrived at Helsinki Central an hour after we landed. As long as your flight is on time and you do not have to wait a long time to claim your bags, you should be okay.

Ah that’s great, thanks for getting back to me! We are hoping to only travel with cabin luggage so fingers crossed this helps to make the journey a bit speedier! Can’t wait to go. Thanks for all the detailed descriptions for getting to the train and buying the tickets. Actually looks more straightforward than I was thinking it would be!

It really is so easy so you do not need to worry about getting the tickets or train. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you make it!

Really helpful post, thanks a lot for this information.

You’re welcome Gaurav 🙂

' src=

Thank you Nikki. As a first-time and solo traveler, this was very helpful!

Thank you Susan and I’m so happy that I could help you 🙂

' src=

Thank you for this information! Which train would we take from Helsinki Airport to the Temppeliaukion Church?

From the airport you would take either the I or the P train mentioned in this post and once you arrive at Helsinki Central Station, it’s an easy ten minute walk to the church.

' src=

Hi Nikki, Thanks for all this information. I was wondering how much of the journey to and from the Airport is underground. And does either the I or P route spend less time underground. Asking for the claustrophobic in me 🙂

You’re welcome Lynn and as far as I can remember the trains are only underground at the airport as the journey was overground the rest of the way – however the P train would be much better for you as the I train is underground for one stop between the Airport Station and the Aviapolis Station located next to the airport. Hope this helps 🙂

👍🏼 I may give P a try or there again I may chicken out last minute 😊 Thanks for this info, it is really hard to get information on whether trains are underground or not. Obviously, for the vast majority of people it is not an issue but for some of us it is of MAJOR importance. Much appreciated.

If this helps you, there is a video on YouTube showing the whole journey on the P Train from the airport to the city so you can see how long it is underground.

Hi. Thank you for the wonderful details. The HSL app does not work outside Finland and hence not able to see the last timing of the train from Airport to the city. Could you kindly share the same? My flight lands at 10:30 pm.

Hi Aruna thanks for letting me know that the website or app do not work outside Finland anymore – they always used to work no matter where you were. Can you access them using a VPN?

I’ve just used my VPN and the last train from the airport to the city centre tonight (3rd February) is at 1:45am – hope this helps.

Amtrak’s Latest Auto Sale Is Here — With Tickets Starting at $34 and No Blackout Dates

The sale ends on March 28.

travel to helsinki by train

Alessandra Amodio/Travel + Leisure

The weather is heating up, and Amtrak wants to make it even easier to reach the beaches of Florida with an Auto Train flash sale that has tickets starting as low as $34.

The sale , which must be booked by March 28, is valid on southbound trains from April 8 to June 30, Amtrak shared with Travel + Leisure . Travel in coach starts at just $34, while kids can board for even less with tickets starting at just $17 for children 2 to 12 years old.

“Traveling from the Northeast to Florida? Skip the hassles of I-95 and save big with the Auto Train Flash Sale,” Amtrak wrote as part of the promotion. “Kick back, relax and let us do the driving from Lorton, Virginia (near Washington, DC) to Sanford, Florida (near Orlando) while your vehicle travels onboard.”

There are no blackout dates for the sale, but travelers must purchase their tickets at least one day before departing.

Travelers looking to ride in more comfort can splurge on a first class private Roomette starting at just $235 for single occupancy or on a private bedroom starting at $435 for single occupancy.

The Auto Train operates from Lorton, Virginia, to Sanford, Florida, over the course of about 17 and a half hours. Travelers must purchase a ticket as well as pay extra for their vehicle, which can include cars, vans, and motorcycles.

The sale is not valid on northbound travel.

Customers who book a coach seat are treated to a complimentary continental breakfast before arrival, while those in a private Roomette or bedroom receive priority boarding, a dedicated first class attendant, and complimentary meals on board.

The sale comes on the heels of Amtrak’s decision to change its fare structure , introducing two new fare options: “value” and “flex.” The company has said the simplified categories will translate to a more consistent booking experience.

The company has also expanded its “Night Owl” fares along the Northeast Corridor, offering tickets up and down the East Coast for as low as $5.

Guide on How to Travel from Helsinki to Lapland

A re you heading to Finland and wondering what the best way to travel from Helsinki to Lapland? Did you know that for most visitors to Finland, these are the two most visited areas? It makes sense as most visitors fly into Helsinki, spend a day or two and then head off into the vast wilderness of Finnish Lapland.

In this guide I will help you in your travel research by providing up to date information on how to travel to/from these regions of Finland, whether its by plane, train or even car.

One of the biggest factors in your decision about how to get from Helsinki to Lapland will be the amount of time you have and your budget. Below I go through the practical details on the three main transport options, providing the positives and negatives for each so you can make the most informed decision. Let get into it!

What are the airports in Lapland?

As I mentioned there are currently 5 airports in Lapland. Below are the airports with the main locations serviced from them.

Rovaniemi Airport (RVN)

Rovaniemi is the third busiest airport in Finland and is the most popular of the ones in Lapland. Located in the south of Lapland, just near the Arctic Circle, this airport is seen as the gateway to Santa Claus Village. Given the towns popularity, there are several flights a day between Helsinki and Rovaniemi. This is one of the few that also is international airport accepting flights from several major European cities.

In general, Rovaniemi can feel a quite commercial and crowded, especially during the peak winter season. This airport also serves as the hub for Pyhä  and  Salla which are popular for their natural beauty and skiing, both downhill and cross country.

Ivalo Airport (IVL)

Two popular destinations with skiers and snowboarders include Inari and Saariselka , which are both serviced by the Ivalo airport. The airport is within 30 minutes of both destinations and is the northernmost airport in Finland.

Kittilä Airport (KTT)

Kittila is one of the main airports in the northernmost region of Finland, and the only other accepting international flights. This airport services the popular ski area of Levi. Levi is a popular spot for families during the festive season, but is smaller and quieter than Rovaniemi. Additionally, the popular Snow Village can be found here.

Our favorite destination serviced by this airport is Muonio which is a laid back destination offering all the popular touristy activities found in Rovaniemi but without the crowds and is excellent for spotting the Northern Lights.

Kemi Airport (KEM)

Kemi-Tornio Airport is located on the coast of the Bay of Bothnia, serving travelers heading to Southern Lapland. Kemi has slowly become more popular in the tourist circuits for their magnificent Snow Castle that is built there every winter and for the famous Sampo icebreaker cruise.

Kuusamo Airport (KAO)

Lastly, the Kuusamo Airport serves one of Finland’s major holiday destinations Kuusamo, attracting almost a million tourists annually. Many of these arrive for skiing at nearby ski resorts, especially Ruka Ski Resort , one of the largest in Finland.

Flying from Helsinki to Lapland

Domestic flights from the capital Helsinki to Lapland airports are operated by Finnair. While the flights can be reasonably priced if booked well in advance, domestic flights on Finnair do impose an extra fee for checked luggage. Additionally, the new Finnair carry on limits are quite strict with a maximum of 8 kg for all carry on items combined. This means, that for most travelers,  it makes most sense to upgrade to the main fare price which includes both carry on and checked baggage. Once you upgrade your flight, a round-trip flight will cost a minimum of €200.  Note, if you are looking for cheap flights, sign up for Finnair’s email blast and keep an eye out for flash sales.

That said, this is still the quickest way to travel between Helsinki and Lapland. It can be cost effective if you are a solo traveler and/or traveling with extremely light luggage. However, it can be get expensive if you need to check a bag or are traveling in high season with several people

Traveling by Train from Helsinki to Lapland

Next we will move on to traveling by train from Helsinki to Lapland , which is the second most popular option.

I personally find travelling by train in Finland to be a wonderful experience and the most convenient way to get around the country. The trains are clean and reasonably reliable depending on weather conditions of course. Additionally, it is better for the environment and saves you money on accommodation if you can take an overnight train to travel while you sleep. All long-distance trains in Finland are operated by VR Train.

Day vs. Night Trains

The most popular train that visitors take to Lapland from Helsinki is the Santa Claus Express train which ends in Rovaniemi. It leaves close to midnight and arrives around 11 a.m. the next morning. If you are traveling with children, this train is great as the sleeper cabins are essentially sold as a two person cabin. Prices for an upstairs private compartment sleeper cabin which includes a private toilet run around 300 Euro one way. The train also has a restaurant car for snacks and meals while on the train. Note, Rovaniemi train tickets for the sleeper cars can sell out quickly, so book well in advance to ensure you have a cabin.

Another popular route is to Kolari, which is the northernmost railway station in Finland. Travel here from Helsinki takes approximately 14 hours. Boarding is around 7:45 p.m. in Helsinki with a 10 a.m. arrival.  Even though it sounds like a long trip, it goes by quite quickly once you get settled in your sleeper cabin, grab some food from the restaurant car and then hit the sack.

If you are unable to secure a sleeper cabin, you can consider a day train. With free Wifi, power sockets and the ability to walk around, an 8 hour train would actually go quite quickly if you can keep yourself occupied! These tickets run around €75 per ticket during high season.

Take Your Car on the Train

For readers who live in Europe or have a rental car already booked, they can consider putting the vehicle on the train as well! These trains depart from Pasila Station and can be extremely handy if you have brought your car over from mainland Europe, but don’t want to drive all the way to Lapland. This is not cheap, but is a dobale option to ensure you have more access to explore around Lapland.

Train Stations in Lapland

There are many train stations in Lapland that I can’t list them all, but the main ending/starting point for the major lines include Kolari as the furthest north, Rovaniemi and Kemijarvi in the east.

Kolari is in the far north of Finland, northeast of Rovaniemi, and very close to the Swedish border. This station is perfect for those traveling to Levi or Muonio. You can reserve a shared taxi or bus from the station to both locations.

Kemijärvi is located east of Rovaniemi and from here you can easily access Salla and Pyhä.

Overall, I personally feel that if you are traveling with others or even on your own that taking an overnight train to or from Lapland is a great option. Train travel is scenic, cost effective if you have a family or a lot of luggage and you also have the option of taking a vehicle. The negatives are that it does take a long time and there are times that the trains leave late at night making it awkward for families with smaller children.

Driving from Helsinki to Lapland by Car

For many travelers further afield, this would mean renting a car and needing to return it either in Lapland or back to Helsinki which can be quite an expense.

I am not sure I would recommend this option for many, but if you have your car and you are confident on driving on the right hand side of the road, in snow or inclimate weather, you will most likely be fine.

But you must be aware that this journey is at least 800 kilometers and can take around 10 hours. That said, the journey up to Rovaniemi is along one main road and the views will be stunning for much of the way.

In general, I’d only advise driving to Lapland from Helsinki if you’re touring elsewhere in Finland, have your own vehicle and have at least a couple of weeks here to make it worthwhile and cost-effective.

Important Information for Your Finland Trip

When is the best time to visit finland.

In reality, you can visit Finland at any time of the year as there are a multitude of activities to suit any weather condition. That said, in my opinion, the best time to visit Finland is definitely during the winter months between December and February. This is when you will see the most beautiful winter wonderland landscapes and you have a great chance to see the aurora borealis. Note, it is also the coldest time of the year, so you will need to prepare for that!

What is the best way to get to Finland?

Finnair offers direct flights to Helsinki Airport from all over the world, including from here in Los Angeles. The international flights are on newer Airbus A350 planes which have ample legroom, flight cameras and more. Subscribe to their newsletter for deals and special offers if this is a trip you are looking to plan far in advance.

If you are in mainland Europe, you can also make your way overland to Tallinn and take the Viking Express over to Helsinki for a very affordable rate. Note, this is also a great day trip idea from Helsinki.

Where do you recommend to stay in Helsinki?

There are so many amazing options to stay in Helsinki. I think where you stay is dependent on what you want out of your visit. During my stay in the city I was leaving on an early morning ferry and arriving late at night from the airport so I chose the Noli Studio Apartments which were cheap, clean and convenient to everywhere I wanted to go. There are several of them located throughout the city, so pay attention to the neighborhood that you wish to be in!

If you want a little more luxury and don’t mind being a little further out, consider the Clarion Hotel which is a favorite for repeat visitors to the city.

What are the best things to do in Finland?

There are so many amazing things to do in Finland that I can’t list them all here. But a start would be to check out our top experiences in Lapland that you can find all over the region. Winter activities are some of the best on offer here in Finland.

What do I need to pack for Finland?

Layers is the short answer. The longer answer will depend on what time of year you are visiting. Assuming you visit during the high season of winter, you will need to pack a lot of warm breathable layers such as merino wool . Overall, I would say to focus on layers, good boots that have room for several pairs of socks, good gloves or mittens and a warm hat.

Travel expert shares 'incredible' experience aboard high-speed train: 'You can really feel the speed of the train'

A German tourist has gone viral after sharing their "incredible" experience riding one of China's high-speed trains, which took them nearly the full length of the country in a day.

In a TikTok video, travel influencer Ken Abroad (@kenabroadclips) reviews a train ride between Guangzhou, northwest of Hong Kong, and Beijing in the north.

@kenabroadclips Taking A Chinese High-Speed Train Across China #china #chinesetrain #highspeedtrain ♬ original sound - Ken Abroad

The journey between the two cities covers 1,428 miles — just a little less than the driving distance from California to Oklahoma.

But China's high-speed train is more than equipped for the job. Within 10 minutes of Ken's journey commencing, his train has sped up to 190 miles per hour. China's fastest trains can reach a speed of as much as 268 miles per hour .

Ken is impressed by the train's amenities too. Throughout the video, he shows off the spacious seating (enough for him, a 6-foot, 2-inch man, to sit comfortably), a drinking water fountain, and the enormous stations that serve the country's passengers.

After departing from Guangzhou at 11:53 p.m., Ken's timer shows him arriving in China's capital within 7 hours and 37 minutes.

"What's crazy is when you're sitting at your chair, you don't really notice how fast we are going," he says in the video, "but standing here at the window and seeing the trucks going by so fast, you can really feel the speed of the train."

China is home to the largest high-speed rail network in the world, with a total length of 28,000 miles . In 2021, it carried 1.9 billion passengers — a 23.1% increase from the year before.

This shift to rail travel has immense benefits both for travelers and the environment. For one thing, it tends to be cheaper than air travel.

Figures from China's Ministry of Transport show that rail travel is vastly more popular with travelers than flights – which is good news for China , which currently has the most carbon dioxide pollution in the world.

One study has shown that high-speed rail helped to drastically cut carbon pollution in China, even after accounting for the increase in pollution during construction. This effect was particularly pronounced in technologically advanced cities.

"I've taken this train a few times," one TikToker replied to the video. "Really amazing, the Chinese high-speed trains."

"Yikes. Train from Boston to NYC is four hours and only 350km. China is rocking technology ," another wrote.

"For a long distance journey in the US, a train ticket is usually more expensive than a plane ticket," said another. "Trains in the US are also slow, that's one major reason why passenger trains are less popular. It needs improvement."

Rick Steves: The highlights of happening Helsinki

  • Share by Email

Helsinki grew up around its busy harbour, overlooked by the gleaming white Lutheran Cathedral. RICK STEVES

Helsinki — Europe’s youngest and northernmost capital city — feels like an outpost of Europe. While it lacks the cutesy cobbles of Copenhagen, the aristocratic setting of Stockholm, or the futuristic vibe of Oslo, Helsinki holds its own among Nordic capitals with its creative spirit, zest for architecture and design, and a steamy love of saunas.

Perhaps the best way to understand Helsinki’s origins is to take the short ferry ride across the harbour to the sleepy island-fortress of Suomenlinna (now a popular park). Little Finland was long caught up in the superpower chess moves of its big neighbours, Sweden and Russia. The Swedes dominated the country from medieval times until 1809, when they lost it to the Russians, who held it until 1917.

The Swedes built Suomenlinna in the mid-1700s to counter Russia’s rising power. Peter the Great had just created his new capital nearby, at St. Petersburg, and he was eyeing the West. With eight kilometres of walls and hundreds of cannons guarding the harbour, Suomenlinna squelched the Russian threat (at least for the time being). With all that activity, small-time Helsinki took off, becoming a boom town in support of the grand strategic fort.

Helsinki is buffered by more than 300 islands, and its harbour is always busy. Frequent passenger ferries cross the Baltic Sea from Stockholm, Tallinn, and even St. Petersburg. The arrival of cruise ships — sliding through tight passages between the surrounding islands — energizes the city each day. Mighty ice breakers moored in their summer slumber are the only reminder of the bitter Baltic winters.

Almost everything worth seeing is walkable from the harbour. Most visitors head directly to Helsinki’s fun harbour plaza, called Kauppatori. This colourful outdoor food bazaar is the place in town for a casual, quick-and-cheap lunch (moose meatballs and salmon grills are favourites). Everyone from the Finnish president to visiting tourists stops by for a dash of local flavour.

Daily bus tours run from the docks for a rapid-fire overview of Finnish history and a quick look at the top monuments and churches. Or you can stretch your legs along Helsinki’s grand boulevard, the Esplanade, leading from the water into town. With wide sidewalks and a friendly park sandwiched in the middle, this is the city’s best stroll for window shopping, people watching, and sun worshipping.

Then delve into the boutiques of the Design District for some of Europe’s most eye-pleasing fashion and home decor. A surprising number of global trends — from Marimekko’s patterned fabrics to Nokia’s pioneering mobile phones to the Angry Birds gaming empire — have been born right here in design-conscious Helsinki. (The local Design Museum displays these innovations and more.)

Helsinki is famous for its 20th-century architecture, from its central train station, an Art Nouveau masterpiece by Eliel Saarinen, to the modernist simplicity of the Finlandia concert hall by Alvar Aalto. The city also boasts beautiful and diverse churches: the gleaming white Lutheran Cathedral, a Neoclassical gem; the red-brick Russian Orthodox Cathedral, a reminder of Russia’s long dominance here; and the underground Temppeliaukio Church, blasted out of solid granite and capped by a copper and glass dome.

There’s also the little Kamppi Chapel. Sitting unassumingly on a city plaza, the spruce structure encloses a windowless cylinder of silence. Inside, indirect light bathes the alder-wood panelling in warmth and tranquility. Does it resemble Noah’s Ark? The inside of an egg? Although it’s a church, there are no services; it’s open to anyone needing a reflective pause.

Overall, I find Finns to be pretty quiet and contemplative. I once wandered into a flea market in Helsinki, closed my eyes, and listened to the soundtrack of 300 Finns. It was almost silent — I could have been in a mountain meadow. So I was surprised to discover the Finnish love affair with lotteries and gambling. Slot machines and games of chance are everywhere, including restaurants and supermarkets, manned by Finns eagerly stuffing in coins. There’s even a roulette lounge at the Helsinki Airport.

A more traditional touchstone of Finnish culture is the sauna. These days, with so many Finns affluent enough to have saunas in their homes (5.4 million Finns have 3.3 million saunas), some of the working-class spots I’ve long enjoyed have gone upscale. The chic Löyly complex is typical of the new trend, with its saunas finely crafted from warm woods, a restaurant serving fashionable Nordic cuisine, and a seaside terrace for lounging.

Helsinki seems designed to promote a sense of community, and when the weather warms, everyone takes full advantage. The city blooms with bikers, picnickers, runners, and walkers, and cafés push their tables out to the sidewalk. Café Kappeli, an Old World oasis of pastry and relaxation, sits proudly at the harbour’s edge. It’s the perfect spot to sip a coffee while waiting for your ship, already savouring your Helsinki memories.
