Lonavala – Things To Do, Where To Stay, How To Travel, And More

Visiting Lonavala? Read this travel blog and find 7 recommended things to do in Lonavala no one should miss.

The diverse land of Maharashtra offers plenty of opportunities for tourists to have a relaxing holiday. For people living in Mumbai for example, Lonavala, located less than 90km away, is a popular hill station.

With an elevation of over 2,000 feet — and a wide range of activities like camping, waterfall rappelling, rock climbing, and trekking — Lonavala is one of the top places to visit in India .

Whether you’re an adrenaline junky or someone who only wants to cosy up and relax, rest assured that there are enough things to do in Lonavala for everyone. So let’s talk about my visit first and start with other nitty-gritty details.

lonavala hills

When I first visited Lonavala, with a group of friends, two years ago, I had no idea what to expect. I thought even a weekend might feel too long there. But it turned out that the place had so much to offer that visiting the place for two days was a total injustice.

It is a perfect getaway to recharge the batteries and get a holiday experience whose memory would last a lifetime.

And speaking of what to see and there, here’s my list of…

Things To Do in Lonavala

Tiger’s leap.

Tiger’s Leap was given its name by locals after a cliff, as it resembled a leaping tiger. This place is ideal to enjoy a number of water sports, including rafting and swimming. In the monsoon, one can enjoy the mini-waterfall that flows into the stream below. At Tiger’s Leap, one can experience the bounty of nature as they trek through the region. So yea, Tiger’s Leap is number 1 in recommended things to do in Lonavala.

Lonavala Lake

This artificial lake was constructed in 1876 to conserve water for the areas of Valvan and Shirota. But with time, it has transformed into an impressive tourist spot. Come here to find some alone time, to read a book or even for some bird watching. What makes this place even more interesting is that tourists are totally allowed to take a swim in the lake and even try their hands at fishing. It reminded me of the lake I saw in Auli in Uttarakhand .

Rajmachi Point

Stop at the Rajmachi Point when travelling between Mumbai and Pune. It is one of the most popular destinations which includes the Rajmachi Fort which belonged to the famous King Shivaji. There are several monuments in and around the Rajmachi Fort. Close to the fort are two small forests called Shrivardhan and Manoranjan. Rajmachi Point is also famous for its topography which has a deep valley on three sides and a thick and dark forest on the other. So yea, Rajmachi Point gets the well-deserved number 3 spot in my things to do in this Lonavala travel blog.

Bhaja Caves

The Bhaja caves were built around 200 BC by Buddhist nuns. And they hold excellent architecture which can be seen in sculptures like the prince with his chariot, and animal sculptures such as elephants and tigers. There are 22 rock-cut caves in total, and each of them has substantial characteristics. One can moreover find is a small waterfall in the last cave and a pond beside it.

Lohagad Fort

Built in 1564, the Lohagad Fort is another architectural marvel. It was initially a prison and served as a treasury for Shivaji. The hillfort is located at an altitude of 1050 meters which resembles the fangs of a scorpion. Lohagad Fort also offers spellbound bird’s eye views of Karle and Bhaja caves.

Ryewood Park

For any nature lover, Ryewood Park brings out the best in wildlife and nature. With several sprawling lawns, it is known for its variety of flora. Initially, it was designed as a botanical garden but was later opened to the public.

Nagphani Woods

Nagphani, which is also known as the Duke’s nose got its name from the top of the cliff which resembles the hood of a snake. It is ideal for trekking and hiking with its impressive inclines and slopes. Since it has a great topography for trekking, one can also dot across the forest and visit a few important landmarks.

How to Reach Lonavala

Now that you know what are the top things to do in Lonavala, next up is learning how to reach Lonavala.

And it doesn’t matter what part of the planet you’re coming from, with a comfortable flight to Mumbai, and a couple of hours drive, you can reach there before you even realize it.

If you want to take a flight, the nearest airport with connectivity and better flight rates is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. And it is less than 100 km away. From Mumbai, there are regular buses – both ordinary and luxurious. Other than that, it is also possible to hire a cab right from the airport and travel conveniently. Since the distance is less than 100km, a taxi won’t cost much either and will be quick and convenient.

If you’re flying to Mumbai or Pune and then travelling from Pune Airport or Mumbai Airport to Lonavala, you will have to do the rest of the journey by road. The best way to travel is by hiring a taxi from the airport or renting a car and driving from Mumbai to Lonavala. Doing so will be a great experience too as the drive is very scenic. Mumbai Pune Expressway or old Mumbai Pune Road NH4 are used to drive between the two destinations.

If you are coming from Pune, the distance between the two destinations will be around 80km.

Other than driving, there are gular buses from both the cities (Pune and Mumbai) that take less than two hours.

If you are coming on a train, you will be happy to know that we have Lonavala railway station too with great intercity connectivity from Mumbai and Pune. And regular passenger trains from Mumbai and Pune make it very easy to travel on the train too. It is moreover the most pocket-friendly way to travel between the destinations, and very less time-consuming too, given there are no delays.

Where to Stay In Lonavala

If you’re thinking about where to stay in Lonavala, look no further than the super-cosy Treasure Island Hotel. Tucked away from the main-town of, this place offers breathtaking views of mountain peaks and glimmering waters – something you would want to live your holiday for.

If not, there are at least 100 more places to choose from, and this includes budget hotels as well as high-end resorts.

A few places to choose from are Upper Deck Resort, Fariyas Resort, The Machan, Cloud 9 Hills Resort and Zaras Resort Khandala, among others.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Lonavala

Though you can visit any time you like, the best time is considered sometime between October and May. The only season I will suggest you do not visit this place is during monsoon. Between June and September, this entire region in Maharashtra gets heavy rainfall. But then again, some people may love this season more and enjoy the greenery and travelling during non-peak season .

lohagad

Other Tourist Places Nearby

It is one of those places that have numerous tourist destinations around. For example, other than Lonavala Lake, there are numerous lakes around. This includes Tugauli Lake, Bhushi Lakes, also Walvan Dam. So yea, if you are travelling in your own car or motorcycle, you can drive around and explore more than just the main town.

The popular hill station of Khandala is moreover only 5km away.

If you are into yoga and meditation, you can visit Kaivalyadhama Yoga Hospital located only 2km towards Karla. If you are visiting Bhaja caves (that I mentioned about above in the things to do in Lonavala list) you can visit Kaivalyadhama Yoga Hospital on the way. You will find a number of European tourists learning Yoga there. Also, the 2nd century BC rock-cut Carla caves are worth visiting too. I didn’t mention it in the list above because Bhaja Caves are more interesting.

A Bit About The Location

As I mentioned above, it is located in the western part of Maharashtra on the slopes of the Sahyadri mountain range. The entire mountain range covers an area of 140,000 square kilometres in a stretch of 1,600 kilometres. Other than Maharashtra, the Sahyadri mountain range cover a part of Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat too. Sahyadri mountain range is otherwise known as the Western Ghats.

The Sahyadri mountain range around Lonavala has an elevation of nearly 600m above sea level with pleasant weather throughout the year. The weather is another reason why many people visit this place.

According to the Tourism of India website, Lonavala is an important place since the 2nd century BC when it was a popular Buddhist town. The caves that you find there are also Buddhist meditation caves. Other than here, you can find Buddhist caves around many places in Mumbai, including the popular Kaneri Caves.

So yea, other than a popular tourist place, Lonavala is a significant historical site too. Many archaeological students visit the caves in the region to study and do a thesis. It is said that Chattrapati Shivaji, the founder of the first Maratha Empire, also ruled this area, before it came under the Peshwa rulers. The place was, in the end, taken over by the Britishers during their rule in India.

That’s all in this ‘Things to do in Lonavala’ blog. If you think I’ve missed any points, please share them in the comments below.

Parsi Colony Lonavala

Spreading over an area of 38 square kilometres , Lonavala, along with its sister hill station, Khandala is the highlight of the Sahyadri Range on the Western Ghats in Maharashtra. With the highest point rising to 2041 ft, the hills of Lonavala and Khandala make a clear demarcation between the Deccan Plateau region and the Konkan Coast . It is often called the City of Caves owing to the series of ancient natural caves of Karla, Bhaja, and Bedsa that line the region.

The name of the town is derived from the Prakrit language Leni and Avali , which translates to “ a series of resting places .” Owing to the small naturally formed caves in the region. Leni , in the vernacular, refers to a resting place carved in stone, or simply, caves. While Avali means series . The history of Lonavala goes back to the time of the Yadava dynasty, followed by the Mughal occupation when the empire used the town as a strategic location. Lonavala played an important role in the history of the Marathas and Peshwas, before it was discovered by Lord Elphinstone in 1811, the Governor of Bombay Presidency, and became a summer destination.

#11 of 11 Things to do in Lonavala

Buying chikki (a type of hard peanut and jaggery candy) is almost like a rite of passage and one of the first things to do in Lonavala for most visitors. You can’t come back from Lonavala without chikki and still hope to keep your loved ones back home happy. There are countless shops that sell this yummy candy but the go-to place is Maganlal’s Chikki – the original chikki makers in the hill station. The shop is now run by the 5 th generation of the family; you can buy several types of chikki here besides namkeen and dry fruit rolls.

Another treat you must not leave without is Walnut Chocolate Fudge from Cooper’s, an unassuming little shop set up by Noshir Cooper about 85 years ago. It may be a small place but Cooper’s is an iconic Lonavala institution; there are recipes online that claim to have duplicated the walnut chocolate fudge! Make a pit stop here before leaving the rainy hill station.

Some other worthy things to do in Lonavala is to spend a day at the Wet ‘n’ Joy Waterpark – India’s largest water park, get thrilled to bits at Della Adventure Park and visit the kitschy Sunil’s Celebrity Wax Museum. My Lonavala Trip: Suggestions, Recommendations and Tips

by Riya Jogi on May 24, 2023

Your guide to Lonavala trip

They say travelling opens your mind to different perspectives and to energize my soul, I decided to make a Lonavala trip and embrace its beauty. Nestled in the state of Maharashtra, the beautiful hill station of Lonavala is all about celebrating life with lush green hills, trekking expeditions, adventure sports and so much more. So, are you ready to embrace my Lonavala tour? Let’s go and check out everything that you need to know about this absolutely stunning destination.

How to reach the location?

By airways:.

You can take a flight to Pune and land at Lohegaon Airport, the nearest to Lonavala. It is 64 Km from here which you can either cover by car, bus or train.

By Railways:

Your guide to Lonavala trip

Lonavala is reachable from the major cities of Mumbai, Pune, Nashik and others. It is always a great idea to take a train early in the morning so that you can manage your check-in to the hotel.

By Roadways:

Lonavala is well connected through roadways, and you can either take a bus which takes around 4 hours or opt for a road trip with your friends or family.

Your guide to Lonavala trip

For my Lonavala trip, I took Deccan Express from Dadar at 7:13 AM and thoroughly enjoyed the journey. While I didn’t opt for AC due to favourable weather, you may choose the AC coach for a more comfortable journey. Do not forget to try tempting hot Vada Pav from the hardworking vendors at the Kalyan Station.

I reached Lonavala by 10:10 AM to mark an exciting journey this time!

Day 1 of Lonavala Trip

Some leisure before the day begins.

I absolutely didn’t want to start the Lonavala trip as a hassle. Some holidays are not about running but rejuvenating. With such an amazing room that I found on Treebo hotels website, I was all set to enjoy my breakfast. As I entered the room, I took a nice nap because I just could not stop finding comfort in linen beds topped with the cleanliness of the room.

You know, the smell of hotel rooms hits the brain and you never really smell it elsewhere. It’s literally an emotion!

Satisfying Taste Buds at Buvanchi Misal

My Lonavala trip would have been incomplete if I did not live and eat like a local. It’s quite intriguing to know about the culture, practices and cuisines of any place so I didn’t hesitate to grab the moment by visiting a local cafe or an eatery. So, that’s what I did!

Your guide to Lonavala trip

I got to know about Buvanchi Misal from the hotel staff and immediately called the auto driver. As I reached the place, I could see how it was filled with locals, tourists, families and people all around. To my discovery, the place was pretty famous and had been serving authentic misal pav for ages! I ordered it and oh! It was mouth-watering.

lonavala travel blog

You might have eaten the spicy misal but trust me, this one was a soothing balance of crunch, smooth texture and fusion of spices. It is a must-try here! Apart from this, I tried their famous buttermilk, and it was mind-blowing to witness the pureness in preparation. The place also had other food items including Vada Pav, Sol Kadhi, Kanda Bhaji and more.

Time for Tips

  • Sundays are super busy here, and you might feel rushed during the busy hours. Avoid them!

What a palatable Maharashtrian lunch with beautiful people preparing it! I headed to my hotel for some rest and to get ready for the next adventure.

Also, check out 15 BEST THINGS TO DO IN LONAVALA FOR AN ENTHRALLING TIME

Saying Hi to Mapro Garden

If you have ever stayed in one of the hotels in Mahabaleshwar, you cannot leave without experiencing deliciousness at the famous Mapro Garden. To give a wholesome experience to travellers, the brand has created yet another Mapro Garden in Lonavala. My visit here was worthy enough with so many things to do at one location.

Your guide to Lonavala trip

Let’s say the Lonavala trip did all the justification here as Mapro Garden is located near a long-stretched road where I could easily catch a glimpse of lush green mountains. The sprawling area is huge enough to experience solace, do some shopping and dive into a world of tranquillity.

To begin with, Mapro Garden has an enclosed dedicated shopping area where I could find loads of varieties of Mapro syrups, slushes and special Mojito mixtures. To my surprise, they had live counters all around that let you try the drink before buying it. Who doesn’t love free stuff? I literally enjoyed every drink, chocolate and cookie from here.

Time for Tips!

  • Backpacks are easier to carry as the place does not have any dedicated area to keep your shopping bags while you roam around.
  • It is best to first explore the garden because you wouldn’t want to carry your shopping bags all around!

What Can You Buy?

You can buy from a range of Mapro’s Falero jellies, candies, Mapro Syrups and the brand’s stuffed toys. You can also find products from other brands that include dark chocolate, white chocolate, a variety of cookies, nacho chips and a lot more.

My favourite ones are Mazzana Almond Dark Chocolate, Kiwi Syrup and a cute strawberry plush toy.

Moving Ahead..

Your guide to Lonavala trip

Oh, the story doesn’t end here! After a great shopping experience, I moved ahead to find a stunning view of a man-made waterfall with some colourful fishes swimming in the pond. If you are here, make sure to explore all the green surroundings and take a picture with the waterfall too!

The Lonavala trip simply got better with a huge space dedicated to delicious food. The food area is quite hyped due to the famous Strawberry cream. It was all flooded with cream and juicy strawberries, so I obviously could not resist. The cafeteria also has some great varieties of pizzas and sandwiches to choose from! You need to buy coupons first and might have to wait longer in queues during the peak season.

lonavala travel blog

Food and drinks take time for preparation so it is best to visit the cafe when your hunger levels are not at peak.

Additionally, Mapro Garden also has a clothing shop where you can collect souvenirs or buy unique women’s wear for yourself. I did check it out, however, I found it a bit pricey. At last, I said goodbye to this beautiful place and headed for a comfortable rest at the hotel.

  • You can easily find auto rickshaws from the gate itself so you needn’t worry about transportation.
  • It is ideal to pay a fixed amount to and fro to avoid getting looted.

Enjoying a Relaxing Stroll

Day 1 of my Lonavala Trip was crazy enough with shopping, photography and scrumptious food. After a hearty meal at a local eatery, I went around the hotel for a walk. It was surprisingly amazing to find the hotel staff being responsible for my safety while I was out.

Day 2 of Lonavala Trip

Witnessing serenity at tungarli lake.

Tungarli Lake is a popular serene point in Lonavala, and since I didn’t go trekking, I really wanted to explore this place. It was a long walk from my hotel and so I opted for an auto-rickshaw early in the morning. What a beautiful lake it was!

After sitting here for a while, I tried some corn bhajjis and chai from the local stalls with really sweet vendors. It is recommended to visit this place in groups as it gets crowded with locals and the way to get here is also quite. I soaked in nature here and headed back to the hotel.

With all my hunger, I went to local restaurants and enjoyed a delicious meal compromising authentic Maharashtrian varieties. A heavy meal only inspired me to rest for a while in my oh-so comfy bed for a power-packed evening.

Seeking Blessings at Narayani Dham

The Lonavala tour is specifically highlighted in my memories because of the Shree Narayani Dham . After the evening tea, I straightaway headed here. It is a divine temple with a beautiful statue of Goddess Narayani studded with glorious diamond-like shining jewels.

Your guide to Lonavala trip

The temple is spread across a huge area where my eyes simply could not stop witnessing the open skies and abundantly sprawling gardens. The 4.5-acre land was decorated for a grand wedding in the presence of Gods and Goddesses here during my visit. My Lonavala trip was elevated as I stepped inside to ring the giant bell which is considered quite auspicious.

  • It is believed that you should stand in the centre of the bell and just after you ring it, you can feel all the vibrations within you.
  • I tried, and it worked, I felt different. It’s your turn now!

The temple has basic stay options. However, you can look for budget-friendly hotels in Lonavala for a comfortable stay. There’s a huge area to sit and immerse yourself in nature, and that’s what I did. Also, it is one of the best spots for photography on your Lonavala tour.

Your guide to Lonavala trip

It was a fusion of mesmerising fountains, divine prasad and spirituality in the air. The experience was topped with helpful locals and calmness here. I then moved towards the right to find a cowshed where I fed grass to cows at a minimal amount of INR 50. You can do it too!

As I moved out, I could not stop myself from enjoying the hot Vada Pav and Chai from a local stall right opposite the temple. Also, it is the best spot to witness the Rajasthani architecture of the temple from a faraway angle.

I was done for the day and headed to the hotel for a scrumptious dinner and rest.

10 THRILLING PLACES TO VISIT IN LONAVALA THAT YOU SHOULDN’T MISS THIS SEASON

Exploring the Local Market for Shopping

It was time to say goodbye to this awe-inspiring hill station. However, I was taking home memories of an amazing travel experience. I checked out from the hotel and headed for a crazy shopping time during the last day of my Lonavala trip. I took an auto and headed to the main market near the station.

Your eyes are sure to be startled by the amount of chikki shops you will find here. Maganlal Chikki is the brand which set Lonavala to be the hub for chikkis; however, it is now difficult to identify the real legacy store.

Every store offers you a huge variety of chikkis, fudges and other snacks. However, my personal favourite is the scrumptious Chocolate Walnut Fudge, Mix Chikki and Sweet Jellies. I also tried the Rose Fudge and Mango Fudge and absolutely fell in love with them! Here are some of the best shops to start your shopping.

Navratna Chikki

1/2, Markar Manzil, MG Rd, near Mavla Statue, Lonavala, Maharashtra 410401

Cooper’s Fudge And Chikkis

Coopers, opposite Viner Resort, near Laal Taki Ryewoods, Lonavala

Purohit’s Chikki & Sweets

Shop No.A1 To A4, Kumar Resorts, Old Mumbai – Pune Hwy, Takve Kurth, Rao Colony, Lonavala, Maharashtra 410401

  • The auto drivers might try to take you to manufacturing units where you can get a discount; however, the taste is not upto the mark.
  • Do not fall for discount traps without knowing the quality of fudges sold at these units.

Heading Back to Home

I literally wish I had a huge bank balance to literally buy so many nostalgic and international chocolate bars from here. However, I controlled my impulses and headed straightaway to the station. I took the train – Deccan Express at 4:25 PM for yet another scenic journey to home.

As I bid goodbye to my Lonavala tour, I promised myself to keep coming back for the thrilling adventures, soothing greenery and many unexplored destinations to visit!

Things to know before travelling to Lonavala

  • Auto-rickshaws are available for local travelling in Lonavala but fares are not decided by meter; you need to negotiate with the driver before heading to any location
  • The basic cost starts with INR 100 and can go up to INR 350 – 400 if you travel to the market in between your journey
  • You can explore places via walking however, it is difficult to navigate through maps and you might lose your way

Do’s and Don’ts in Lonavala

  • Always know if your hotel is near the East or West as the auto fare changes to a great extent if you step on the wrong side
  • Always ask the auto driver to leave you near the market area for the station as you need to climb a lot from the other side
  • Take the contact details of the auto driver and fix a good price for travelling throughout your Lonavala trip; it avoids too much negotiation with different drivers
  • It is good to buy Mapro products from the original store for genuine quality
  • Always ask the hotel if they offer a private cab facility to roam around in the city
  • Always keep your maps on while travelling to be on track

Don’ts

  • Don’t take any auto-rickshaw right outside the station; they are sure to charge higher than others. Get out of the station premises to find a reasonable price
  • Auto drivers might offer to be your tour guide for a Lonavala tour covering different points but don’t fall for it before checking reviews and availability of the place
  • Don’t roam alone after 8 PM as some parts of the hill station become quiet without locals on the road; it is all safe if you are in a group

Where did I Stay?

If I had to do a Lonavala trip, I was pretty sure of opting for a hygienic property. My second priority was to enjoy an outdoor swimming pool. So, I booked the hotel called Treebo Trend Five Elements through the Treebo website. I also got an amazing discount upto 5% and that literally made the day!

I took a standard room which was quite spacious for 2 people. Felt like I instantly dived into a world of tranquility and luxury, all away from everyday hustling life. The staff was courteous enough to help me with laundry and iron board service.

Let’s not forget the huge swimming pool which was all clean. I really didn’t expect that sort of cleanliness considering the number of guests the hotel had! The hotel simply exceeded my expectations and bang on, I am always booking this one. If you are planning for a Lonavala tour, this hotel serves delicious complimentary breakfast which you cannot miss.

I found it a bit lazy to go out and eat however, it was yet another way to explore like tourists so yeah, that’s a win-win deal.

Now that you have all the routes, hotel details and places to explore, go and enrich your holidays with a great Lonavala trip. Sometimes, all you need is a little time away from your occupied self.

It was just another Sunday when I got a message from  a colleague asking to pack a bag and meet him at a defined place. I reached the place in about half an hour to find an Innova waiting for me. The car was occupied by other office Junta (people) and there was one seat was left for me. And thus began a surprise road trip to  Lonavala . So at 12 noon on Sunday we started our 90 KM trip. The agenda of this trip was to see the sun set at Tiger Point .

Roadtrip to Lonavala ( Source )

It was my first road trip to Lonavala  (I had only traveled by train, before this). The route via Mumbai Pune Expressway is enchanting in itself. I recommend every traveler to try this drive at least once.

Our first destination was Bhushi Dam . As it was the month of October, the dam was completely dry with very few people around. If you manage to reach here by 3 the surprise you will get to see is the place is sunny & shady at the same time. You might have seen this combination millions of time but Bhushi Dam defines this beauty in its own way.

Bhushi Dam

The second destination was Tiger Hill .Words can’t define the beauty of this place. The beauty will make you hush and just sit their calmly, taking in all that’s around. Your mind rejuvenates. It’s hard to believe that a place so close to nature exists so near to Mumbai . We waited for the sun to set. The color transition of the sky from white to orange to dark is still alive in my eyes. By evening it becomes chilly.

We left at around 7:30 and reached back around 10.

The locals sell Sweet Corn and its related dishes in abundance and its available through out the year. The other snacks available are Corn Pakoda, Onion Pakoda, Samosa, Vada Pav .

Tiger hill at Lonavala

Waiting for sunset at Tiger hill

Lonavala is very near to Mumbai (90 KMs by road & 96 KMs by train) and one can reach their either by train or by booking a private car (both approximately takes 2 hrs). The fare by train varies from Rs.65 (General & 2 nd Sitting) to Rs 260 (AC Sitting) per head. Hiring a car depends on the vehicle but one shouldn’t pay more than Rs.4000 for a round trip. From station to various points, auto’s are available, they charge from Rs.150 to Rs.700 based on the number of sites you want to visit.

I visited Lonavala during both Rainy & Autumn season and below are the differences I noticed:

1.   Lonavala is extremely crowded during monsoons (Jun – August), however Bhushi dam remains a good visit for this season.

2.  It rains almost 24×7 during the monsoons and every frame which you see is popped up in all shades of green. That is one side of Lonavala you might not want to miss.

3.  Always opt for a train ride if you are visiting during monsoons. The scenery and the ride are quite the highlight.

4.   Lonavala is extremely different in the two seasons, making you feel you visited two different places each time.

Tiger hill at Lonavala

Lonavala definitely calls for a weekend one day trip. One barely needs to spend Rs.500 to enjoy such beauty. You can visit it any time of the year but to see its true beauty monsoons are the time to be at this hill station. Also never forget to buy Chikkis on your way back home.
