"We used this app in Jackson,WY and through Teton National Park. As we drove through Teton NP, we listened to the historical story of the area. It gave us so much more understanding of the area and added so much to our drive. It’s really easy to use and added so much to our trip. Would gladly use it again."

- NewJersey.com

"Great app for visitors & locals - This app rocks. Learned so much about Jackson Hole and the surrounding areas just by having my phone on me. Anyone who is adventuring in the wild Wild West should consider having this app on their phone. You’ll be surprised with how much you can learn on your trip!"

More time could have been spent talking about the culinary aspects of the Napa area.  It is obvious that good wine goes with good food.

The crowds in certain areas were overwhelming to walk through.  The information was a little too much about early Hollywood.  But overall it was a nice experience.

Loved having Chris Thomas King guide me through the French Quarter. The tour was fantastic and the MUSIC!

Tutto bene!  (SelfTour’s Translation: “All’s Good”)

Loved the ghost stories.

I took this tour on a very hot, humid day and thought I was going to die.  Thank God for the snack vendor outside the Air & Space Museum.  Since I found the tour very worthwhile, my recommendation to others is to break it up over two days.

Has anyone used the GPSmycity app? What audio walking tour do you recommend?

In doing some research for an upcoming trip I ran across this app: GPSmycity which apparently has 6,500 walks in 1,000 cities. Many of the reviews are from bloggers who also got free subscriptions so the reviews are fluffy and somewhat suspect. I have also found other reviews that were quite negative (all information plagiarized from Wikipedia) and that the app is not very stable which is pretty concerning but with 6,500 walks it makes me wonder if it might be a good app.

What I'm interested in is how easy is the app to use, are the audio directions accurate, is the information useful etc. I have used the RS audio walking guides and am looking for something similar. I find walking tour directions from guide books challenging to use - you're always referencing your book/print out distracting from the enjoyment of the walk. I'm hoping someone on the forum has used this app and can give me some honest feedback. In the meantime, I'm going to download a couple of walks for my city and test drive it here.

And please let me know if there is a audio walking tour app you can recommend - it sure would be wonderful to have one!

The annoying, persistent pop-up ads on the app's website don't exactly instill confidence.

It would be helpful to know where you will be visiting.

@CJean: This trip we will be in Amsterdam, Lille, Bayeaux, the Loire Valley (bike trip) and Paris. The cities for which I would most like to have audio walking tours would be Amsterdam and Paris; I think the rest of the itinerary lends itself to wandering around more than purposeful agendas.

Well...maybe you should just try it out? What do you really have to lose if it doesn't pan out? Cost much?

You can of course just pay for a walking tour in most/all of those places with a human guide. That's what I often do. RS has audio guides too for Paris and Amsterdam no doubt even if they aren't GPS-guided.

@Andrew: We've done all the RS audio walking tours and have some guided tours but for this trip, as we've been to Paris several times previously, I was hoping to find some more independent walking tours that took us a little further afield. There are so many useful apps available I was hopeful that perhaps there was something that fit the bill.

Many years ago, we did several walking tours in NYC that we downloaded as audio files (long before apps existed) that were absolutely fantastic taking us into neighbourhoods and to restaurants that we might not otherwise have found on our own. And all of them were narrated by locals. Probably one of the best memories we have of all of our trips to NYC.

5 Top Apps for Self-Guided Tours: Create Unique Experiences for every Guest

It's always a thrill to see visitors flock to your doors. Whether you're a museum operator, give guided tours of historic sites, or manage the entertainment at a ski resort, your ultimate goal is to give guests the experience of a lifetime. That's what all the planning, organizing, pomp, and circumstance is about, after all — enriching people's lives and leaving them fuller than when you met them.

When you make your visitors' experience and engagement a priority, your guests are more likely to share the love for your destination. Encouraging folks to explore independently is one of the ways to ensure they have a totally unique experience.

Now, how do you do that? Support your efforts with interactive experience and self-guided tour apps that allow your guests to learn, discover, and explore at their own pace. And what a difference that can make!

How a Self-Guided Tour Can Enhance Your Visitor Experience

An app is the simplest way to implement a self-guided tour for visitors. Their phones are already an extension of how they view and communicate with the world. Your visitors don't want to roam your premises with paper maps. Beyond the environmental implications (and mess for you 🗑), they'll spend so much time trying to follow directions that they won't have the opportunity to be present. Today, self-guided tour apps make it possible (even...easy?) to connect your guests to information without distracting from their environment and surroundings. And they'll stay engaged long after they’ve visited!

Self-guided tours give people the opportunity to explore at their own leisure. Apps provide the support your visitors need to get the most out of the experience. They can include interesting facts and trivia about your destination or exhibit, for example. They can gamify the tour by incorporating a scavenger hunt or a mystery for visitors to solve. Of course, apps are also there to provide the bare-bones support that every participant requires, including routes and maps.

5 Best Apps for Self-Guided tours

If you’re ready to elevate the experience for your visitors, these apps make an enormous difference. Here are five of the best apps for self-guided tours to consider:

Goosechase lets you create interactive experiences that coax curiosity and joy out of every guest. Founded over 10 years ago as a scavenger hunt app, Goosechase has evolved into an app you can build virtually any kind of interactive experience on. Trivia game with strangers? Photo tour of your sculpture garden? Scavenger hunt in a maze of local graffiti alleys? It's all possible.

Use the three Mission types (Photo/Video, Text, and GPS) to construct a checklist of fun things to do or discover at your destination. Used as an interactive tour guide, you can have your guests test their knowledge by answering trivia questions about your latest exhibit or hunting down easter eggs in your art work.

Drive friendly competition amongst guests and see who can do the most ski runs in a weekend by having riders post pics of themselves at the start of every trail. (Even better if they have to strike a pose that represents the trail name!) Inspire exploration at your park by having people GPS check-in at each interest point. The more involvement you ask of your visitors, the more fun they’ll have immersing themselves in your attraction — and walking out far richer in knowledge and enjoyment than they would have otherwise.

gps walking tour app

Loquiz is a walking tour guide’s dream because it makes gamifying locations simple. The app includes a variety of built-in templates that are easy to apply to your business. Among the templates is one for tours that makes it simple to create fun and engaging routes for each stop on the tour. Whether your tours take place indoors or outdoors, you can use the app to create useful maps that help people feel more connected to the attraction they’re visiting.

PocketSights

Designed especially for universities, colleges, community organizations, and historic sites, this app allows administrators to create tour routes from scratch. This is especially useful for organizations that may have attractions in unusual locations, like fields or parking lots: your visitors can go anywhere you tell the app to guide them! Using GPS, the app makes it easy for your guests to navigate the tour on their own. Plus, it allows you to include valuable and engaging content about each of the stops, giving people extra incentive to stop and explore while on their tour.

If you’re all about scavenger hunts, Scavify is a great option that allows for a ton of customization. Guests respond to a variety of photo, video, GPS, QR code, and question prompts that get them to engage with your material. Maybe you’re highlighting a new attraction at your museum and want to call attention to its rich subject matter - guests can scan QR codes that reveal more information, or answer trivia questions directly in the app.

STQRY has a variety of platforms to support all types of programming - walking tours, group tours, and even kiosks. Whether you work at a department of tourism or run historic walks through heritage sites in your city, you can use their platforms to create audio experiences, self-guided tours, and even your own apps to introduce visitors to your premises.

Ultimately, it’s all about the experience — and finding the right interactive experience platform to partner with makes all the difference. You’ll take every single visit to the next level when you make your self-guided tour a journey that gives guests plenty of opportunity to surprise themselves along the way. That’s how the best memories are made.

What is Goosechase?

At Goosechase, experience is everything. Originally inspired by scavenger hunts, Goosechase is an online platform that enables organizations and schools to engage, activate, and educate their communities through delightful interactive experiences. Getting Around Amsterdam

One of the most popular destinations in Europe, Holland’s capital is a fun place to visit, especially with friends, or as a couple. But, there’s more to Amsterdam than tulips and windmills! Here are a few of the top picks for your audio tour of Amsterdam.

Canals and Culture

Whether you choose to get off the beaten track or take a popular route on your self-guided walking tour of Amsterdam, give yourself enough time to experience the city by foot. There are more than 160 canals in Amsterdam, although you can just head to ‘De Negen Straatjes’ and experience this quaint area in the central canal belt. From here, take a leisurely walk past the impressive Koninklijk Palace before a cheeky visit to Amsterdam’s Red Light District for some adult entertainment (if that’s your thing).

Foodie Scene

During your trip, be sure to join in the local cuisine. Foodhallen, is a humongous hall with over 30 food stalls and bars – ideal for a big group. Pick up a taco, try out a waffle and don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy a craft beer or two! Speaking of which, beer lovers will enjoy the Heineken Experience, where you can learn about the world-famous beer from the region.

History and Culture

Amsterdam has a rich history to uncover. A must-visit is Anne Frank’s former home, this 17th-century property is today transformed into a museum and educational centre, featuring snippets from diaries she has written, offering a fascinating insight into its wartime past. For a very different type of local culture, the Johan Cruijff Stadium Tour at Ajax’s stadium is a must for football fans.

Flowers and Tulips

During your audio tour of Amsterdam, be sure to experience the local tulip fields. June and July are the best months for the flower bulb region, with events such as the Aalsmeer Flowers Festival and Sailing Flower Parade taking place. For more of this, take in the fragrant smell at Keukenhof Gardens – home to flower fields galore. Spread over 32 hectares, the beautifuldisplay includes everything from daffodils to tulips to enjoy in this photogenic area.

For Art Lovers

The unmissable Van Gough Museum is a great place to spend an afternoon, with the largest collection of his works anywhere in the world. For those who appreciate architecture, the iconicRijksmuseum is one of the most impressive sights, with a huge collection of art and artefacts to photograph.

LoveOundle Walking Tours 4+

Audio tours of historic oundle, at creative limited, designed for ipad, screenshots, description.

The Love Oundle Walking Tour app is designed to give an interactive experience around the historic town of Oundle in Northamptonshire. The app allows you to walk around the town and to be guided by a local expert on points of interest around the town and surrounding area. Once you have downloaded the app and content you are able to select from a variety of tour types dependant on you interest. There will be both audio and pictures that allow you to visualise the building, tree or points of interest that is being referred to. Pictures are available if you see three dots alongside the audio file that is playing on the Playlist page. The audio can be paused, replayed or forwarded. This app makes use of GPS to show you places of interest close to your current location. (Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life so it’s best to disable location services for the app after you have done the tour). Audio is automatically triggered once you are within viewing distance of the point of interest. Those places that you have visited are then ticked on the list of audio files. A suggested route is shown on the map, however you do not have to follow this route if you wish to choose your own order or just learn about some of the pints of interest. New tours will be added over time, so keep an eye out for our latest development.
