Stopped first at Ship's Cover, where Cook spent so much time reprovisioning on several trips, It's a beautiful sight to spend some time. Saw some dolphins and tons of birds. recommended. The meeting point is central, easy to board, plenty of seats, great commentary by captain. It’s amazing dropping mail into remote locations. • 896Tweetie 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful Boat Tour, Great Company! Excellent boat tour of the Queen Charlotte Sound from Picton. Beautiful day, calm water and gorgeous scenery. The narration by the captain was interesting. the 2 short stops to get ashore were nice. Overall a very enjoyable tour. A very relaxing way to see this area. The staff at Beachcomber was all very friendly, flexible and helpful. We've a tight schedule to make the last shuttle bus back to the cruise ship terminal. Becky at the Beachcomber office offered to ask the shuttle bus to come closer to the boat dock for us to get on in case the tour boat sometimes come back a little late. When we informed the captain of our tight schedule he made sure that we arrived back to the dock even a few minutes ahead of schedule time. Now that's great customer service. • Bob55Auckland 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles If you advertise discounts, honour them! The company offers GoldCard discount, but only if you book by phone which attracts a credit card fee. I went to make a one way booking on the mail run but they initially refused to give me the discount even though there are no exclusions in their advertising, I had previously received the discount on a one-way booking, and the office had confirmed the fare would be discounted, in advance. The commentary on the trip, like that on many ferry & bus trips, was engaging for the punters but riddled with inaccuracies (e.g. ‘the NZ King Shag is the world’s rarest seabird’ – it’s not even New Zealand’s rarest, maybe the 4th. ‘The karori (sic) introduced by Māori is the size of a mouse and didn’t do any harm to the environment’ – far from the truth). Overall, there was a distinct ‘brown man good to the environment/white man bad’ theme. In reality Māori were responsible for the extinction of around 50% of NZ's vertebrate biodiversity prior to European settlement. Read more Written 9 March 2024

  • lifeisabeach2015 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Afternoon My husband and I went on the afternoon cruise-only mail boat tour. Initially we were disappointed when the weather turned just before we were to set sail. Despite the grey skies and intermittent rain, we ended up thoroughly enjoying the cruise, mostly because of the fantastic narration by Captain Jason,. His knowledge about the history of the Sound was impressive and his passion for the on-going conservation efforts inspiring. Even if the weather is inclement, be sure to get off the boat at Ship Cove if there is time for a stop. It is well worth seeing. Thank you Captain Jason for a wonderfully informative cruise. The Marlborough Sounds must be one of the most spectacular spots in the world. The colours and the sites are really fantastic and you don’t have to go to Canada or Sweden to see the best. Add a very good and comprehensive commentary by a real local and you get the idea of how special and proud they feel about his magical place. Fantastic afternoon. Read more Written 28 February 2024
  • wrightd2311 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Two great trips We went out with Beachcomber twice and had two great trips. We went out on the Mailboat and had a great time popping in to lots of interesting little coves to deliver mail and groceries. The skipper Jason was very informative and fun, really passionate about the ecosystems of the sounds, both above and below the water. On the second day they took us to Mistletoe Bay for our walk to Anawika. The timings were great and everything worked as planned. A really great team all round. We would highly recommend these trips. • H5807KPchrisg 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles It was great until ....... We took Beachcomber Cruises to/from two different landings on Endeavor Inlet on Queen Charlotte Sound and hiked between the landings. We arrived in plenty of time to catch the return, and we were told that we would arrive back in Picton by about 5PM. About 25 minutes after leaving our pickup point, they turned around and went back to pick up several more passengers. We reached Picton at almost 6PM. When we complained to Beachcomber, they failed to acknowledge any fault. From other passengers, we learned that Beachcomber had agreed to alert the late passengers prior to their arrival and failed to do so. Almost 50 passengers had to sit on the boat's uncomfortable seats for an extra 55 minutes and miss their dinner plans. Read more Written 21 February 2024

There’s no doubting the beauty of the awesome scenery, and dropping off mail at remote local jetties along the Sound was fun. but what really made the trip special was the fantastic commentary from Jason our skipper. He was not just local and knowledgeable - his family goes back generations on South Island and he has lived and worked here all his life - but he was passionate about the place and its nature and ecosystem and that passion and enthusiasm was totally infectious. We benefitted from his deep knowledge of the local environment and its history- and he was fun. A really special day and highly recommended Read more Written 19 February 2024
  • 343pe 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Use another company I have to say this is the most disappointing cruise trip I have done in New Zealand in three weeks. For $75 we sailed across the channel to drop people off at a lodge, then moved to the next cove to feed fish for 10 mins, then went slowly passed a moored log container before viewing a big cruise ship and then picking up folks who had visited a nature reserve. NOT the trip that was advertised or expected. If I had wanted to be on a bus/taxi I would have not signed up. I contacted the company about my experience but did not hear anything back except "they sent my comments to corporate". VERY poor. Read more Written 14 February 2024

Sitting on the top deck gave the most awesome views, Dress warm for the wind whatever the weather is on land! The captain’s commentary was spot on and informative and he was accessible on the bridge o have a chat with and ask questions. The whole trip lasted just under 4 hours and was well worth it! Ship Cove Cruise

  • Description

Cruise from Picton, up through the beautiful Queen Charlotte Sound to historical Ship Cove. Along the way your skipper will provide a commentary on the surrounds, history and the wildlife be it bird, fish or mammal!

Enjoy a site visit at Ship Cove, named by Captain James Cook in 1770 when his ship The Endeavour anchored here to replenish supplies of food, water and wood. It became a favourite anchorage of Captain Cook and he returned here a further four times between 1770 and 1777.

Take the opportunity to dabble in the creek where Captain Cook made home brew for his crew and share the beach with the resident wildlife. Have your photo taken beside the Captain Cook Monument commemorating his visits to this area or just relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

Upon re-joining your vessel cruise via Endeavour Inlet to view Furneaux Lodge and Punga Cove Resort before returning to Picton.

Beachcomber Cruises keep cups, we are proud to say we no longer use single use cups as every year New Zealanders throw away nearly 300 million disposable coffee cups – and only one out of every 400 is recycled. Throwing away one cardboard cup doesn't seem like much, but multiply that by the number of free coffee cups we gave away each year and the difference a reusable cup can make is clear. Changing habits takes time, but it's worth it. The environment is crucial to our well-being and to our future, and we should take every opportunity, however small, to reduce harm. We sell our own keep cups in office so you can enjoy tea and coffee on board selected vessels.

I enjoyed the views of the ria from the boat and the walk to the lookout and it was good to see a little blue penguin in its nest box. However it was spoilt by the noise from the boats. I don't know what you need to do to remedy this but it did spoil the trip

A Fabulous Day Out for the Nature Lover

Everyday life can be a humdrum affair, but wherever you live, you will feel a million miles away and a thousand times more relaxed as you cruise past the dolphins and furry seals with the marine birds crying overhead. From Motuara on a clear day, you can make out the North Island – and wait till you see the view from the Cook Strait lookout.

Sense the History

motuara island bird sanctuary and ship cove cruise from picton

All in all, this is an incredible day out for all the family, dolphin-watching and taking a guided wildlife ramble. Parents love to see their children having fun in the fresh air and learning, rather than huddled over a phone in their room. For adults, there is no better way to shake off the cares of the world by being in a part of it where nature rules. Traffic? Noise? Stress? Not around here. It makes you glad to be alive.

Our  nature tours in NZ are also popular with couples of all ages. What could be more romantic than sharing such a wonderful experience with someone you love? If you would like to get up close and personal with the dolphins check out our dolphin swimming tours .

What to expect

We’ll be searching for Dusky, Bottle-nose, Common, Orca and the rare Hector’s dolphins that frequent this unique area. Whether it’s watching a group quietly cruising along or marvelling at their high leaps, back-flips and somersaults during social bouts, dolphins are a magnificent sight! Our special Department of Conservation permit allows us to seek out and interact with all species of marine mammals that live in the Sounds. We’ll take you there and provide respectful interactions with these amazing creatures.

Welcome to Motuara Island

Motuara Island is 100% predator-free and is home to some rare species such as the yellow-crowned Parakeet and Saddleback. Explore the island on your own or go with our knowledgeable guide who will point out and describe the resident blue penguins, rare saddleback, melodic bellbirds, cheeky robins, native pigeons and yellow-crowned parakeets (kakariki). If it’s a clear day, you will also be able to spot the North Island in the distance. The view from the Cook Strait lookout is absolutely spectacular!

Friendly Birds

The birds on this predator-free island are fearless, plentiful and very vocal. It’s not unusual for you to be able to get very close to these amazing creatures – there’ll be plenty of photo opportunities. Our expert guides will be with you all the way – our team are passionate about the local environment and love to share its unique aspects with our small groups.

Historical Significance

Motuara Island was significant for Maori. At the southern tip of Motuara Island is smaller Hippa Island which was the site of a pre-European Maori Pa. The adjacent Ship Cove,  Meretoto, was where Maori first met pakeha on a sustained basis – our guides will show you exactly where. Motuara Island was the location where, in 1770, Captain Cook proclaimed British sovereignty over the South Island.

Refreshments on the way home

After returning to the boat, sit back and relax with a hot drink and cookies before making our way back to Picton and stopping to check out any extra species we discover.

What people are saying about us

“quality wildlife tour”.

Trip Advisor – 5 STAR ***** – 23 May 2017 We were lucky enough to head out with e-Ko Tours recently on a perfect late autumn day with not a cloud in the sky. We’d considered carefully which cruise company to go with and were not disappointed… The boat was well appointed and comfortable with space for everyone to move around easily. Paul, the skipper, was friendly and fun to chat to and Tristram, our guide, was superbly knowledgeable about everything we saw during our 4 hour trip to Motuara Island and back. Also much appreciated were the thoughtful hands up and down from boat to jetty, myself being not the agilest. Little things that make a big difference. We saw a wealth of wildlife whilst on our trip – 2 species of dolphin, the Hector’s were absolutely delightful as they played right around the boat, rolling to look up at us! And fur seals, rare shags, petrels, gannets, moon jellyfish, and on the island – Saddlebacks, Black Robins, Bellbirds, Wax-eyes, Fantails, and Kakariki. I advise sitting quietly by the “bird bath” – water source where the birdlife comes to bathe and drink – for best viewing of birds. It was incredible to listen to the birdsong in the bush, something that is sadly a thing of the past in so many places. Thank goodness for predator-free sanctuaries such as this. It was a most memorable day and I thoroughly recommend E-Ko Tours.

“Great team of people”

FACEBOOK – 5 Star ***** Sam Fox reviewed E-Ko Tours – May 22 · Great team of people – who all worked hard to make sure we enjoyed a fab day out. The boat is really comfortable and well set up, the commentary by Tristram was really well delivered and interesting, further enhancing our experience. We were lucky enough to see many rare bird species both at sea and on Motuara Island, plus NZ Fur Seals and both Hectors and Dusky Dolphins which was just amazing. Paul, the captain, went out of his way to find the Hectors Dolphins – which capped our day off beautifully! If you are looking for a quality wildlife experience these are your guys!

“Awesome tour!”

FACEBOOK – 5 Star ***** Laura Keereweer reviewed E-Ko Tours – December 11, Awesome tour! Nice boat, great skipper, and guide. Both know a lot about the area and about the wildlife. Enthusiastic and fun! Spotted dolphins within the first 20 minutes and was a great experience! ? Thanks so much, guys, would definitely recommend you to all people visiting NZ!

Traveler Reviews

On trip out to Island there was no information given over the loud speaker to point ut things to the passengers. Found this a bit weird as the expectation was that you would expect something like that. Once we got to the island very little info given and we were left to it with all the other passengers. Not all the passengers were able to work up the hill which was challenging to a few people. Will admit bit surprised our boat changed, but the guy on the second boat at least kept us informed of what was going on

Le lieu est magnifique ! C'était super sympa les explications au retour ! La découverte de toutes les baies est intéressante.

The native vegetation and birdsong was so peaceful and the cruise back to Picton was spectacular, visiting all resorts and ships cove on the way, loved it

A beautiful trip and a guide who had useful info. The blurb didn't say that we only had one hour on the island which wasn't really enough. It's not a big island but there is so much to see.

Great day out . Nice stable safe boats . Bird Iland , James Cook monument a must see if you are even slightly interested in the sea Lunch and serice at Furneaux Lodge exceptional . All highly recommended . Thanks to all

A well managed comfortable cruise on the Queen Charlotte Sound from Picton out to Motuara Island and Ship Cove. An hour on the Island to see South Island Robins darting around, Kureru flying at the hilltop lookout and I’m sure I heard a Kiwi call near the pathway on arrival. The Australian fur seal sunning itself on the Jetty was a surprise too. Ship’s Cove is idyllic and a bonus was seeing a dolphin pod on the way back plus watching the skipper give a biscuit to a waiting dog on a pier. Highly recommended.

Two of us went on this trip and loved it. Great staff, lots of information available and great to be a part of what's going on in the Sounds with picking up people and dropping them off in different spots. The boats always arrived when they said they would and lovely to have staff ask how your day tramping etc had been when they pick you up. Nice to have the option of going to see Motuara island and the birds.

we only saw 2 birds on the island and some other animals on the way from afar. to be honest, Picton and nearby is not good place to see wildlife.

Jason was a wonderful guide - personable and very knowledgeable. The cruise itself was relaxing with beautiful scenery (of course - it's New Zealand), and the walk through the Bird Sanctuary was lovely as well. We saw dozens of native birds at very close range. Really great experience!

We had a great time on this trip, very knowledgeable and friendly skippers and staff and they took us to some remote and unique locations in the sounds. We saw baby penguins and various birds and wildlife and got a feel for life in the remote wilderness of the sounds. Can definitely recommend.

  • Bisonq 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic wildlife tour As a wildlife biologist, I chose this because I was looking for a real wildlife tour run by knowledgable people and not something just set up to run tourists around. This is the real deal - a small locally owned company with very environmentally minded folks with a lot of wildlife experience. While one can never plan on wildlife sightings in the wild, these folks know their stuff and know where to look. I saw more endangered species in 4 hours then I have seen in my entire time in new zealand. Knowledgeable and very ethical in their wildlife treatment, I was totally enchanted. • Karlin57 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Good tour, comfortable boat, plenty of birds We saw lots of birds (we're amateur birders). The place they call "the bird bath" is a great place to sit quietly and watch the birds come to bathe and drink after the rest of the group hikes up the hill for the view. If you hike, know the pace is swift so unless you're in great shape it will be hard to keep up. You're only on the island for one hour. Read more Written 25 February 2024
  • robberth482 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great bird watching It was a great tour, we saw so many species! Especially the gannet was beautiful to watch fishing. We had some waves so the 100% seasick free guarantee is maybe a little too much. Also you should know that there is no toilet on board. But overall worth going. (Especially the enthusiasm of Will, the guide, was nice to see. Read more Written 19 February 2024
  • TrailBlazer80635 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fabulous trip to Blumine and Motuara Islands We took the full day birding tour to Blumine and Motuara islands yesterday with four other Alaskan friends. It was a wonderful experience and one of the best guided nature tours we have had in NZ. The captain, Paul, was extremely knowledgeable and very adept in handling and positioning the boat in difficult conditions. Equally, or more, impressive was the young and very enthusiastic naturalist, sommelier, barista and boat hand, Will, who shared his passion and knowledge with all the guests. His knowledge was especially impressive given he has only been in NZ for three months. He is a genuine asset to E-Ko Tour’s operation and should be rewarded for his exemplary performance. They were both extremely informative as well. It was nice to get a cuppa and some bikkies on the way home and even better to get a couple of glasses of the local wine to taste. We enjoyed the walk up Motuara Island. The views from the top were excellent. It was good to see all the birdlife and the fur seals. Too bad we missed the dolphins that day. 😢 I would recommend the experience. Read more Written 18 February 2024

  • Bootsieban 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Half day to Motuara. We have visited NZ from the UK 3 times and I think this is the best tour I’ve ever done and definitely the best value for money when you consider what E-ko tours does for conservation. The boat is excellent, big enough for comfort but shaped so that it can be taken right up to the rocks for a close up of the birds. Paul captained the boat, Will was the guide and Rob the photographer who all made a knowledgeable and extremely enthusiastic team. We took the early morning tour and left on time with a group of 8 people. Paul pulled up to some shearwaters and gannets almost immediately whilst Will gave us info on the conservation efforts NZ is making. He was really enthusiastic and entertaining. We saw 22 King Shags, seals and then the highlight came when a pod of hector dolphins with a calf came to play around the boat. We arrived at Motuara Island where no bags or food are allowed and that’s where you need to make the decision whether to hike the trail with Will or stay at the bird bath with Rob. We did a little of each so we managed to get some lovely views as well as a lot of bird sightings and new information. If we’d been in Picton longer we would definitely have done another trip with E-ko tours, I can highly recommend them. Thanks guys for an awesome morning. Read more Written 14 February 2024

Our guide Will was very well informed about the wildlife we saw, and his tour on Motorua Island was the highlight for us.

The Marlborough Sounds must be one of the most spectacular spots in the world. The colours and the sites are really fantastic and you don’t have to go to Canada or Sweden to see the best. We went out on the Mailboat and had a great time popping in to lots of interesting little coves to deliver mail and groceries. The skipper Jason was very informative and fun, really passionate about the ecosystems of the sounds, both above and below the water.
