Featuring seven iconic characters from the original series - Captain Kirk, Dr. McCoy, Mr. Sulu, Scotty, Uhura, Ensign Chekov and Mr. Spock - each coin contains 1 troy ounce of 99.9 silver, and is struck in accordance to proof condition. The reverse design features the U.S.S. Enterprise, sculpted by Karen Worth, and the inscription: "Where no man has gone before". Each coin comes encapsulated in a display box with a certificate of authenticity complete with serial number. Each coin has a different serial number: Kirk, # 2990, Spock # 244, McCoy # 1228, Uhura # 5670, Scotty # 5233, Sulu # 5386, Chekov # 5325.

Star Trek's Captain Kirk, USS Enterprise featured on new coins

The Perth Mint is going where no mint has gone before. (So to speak.)

Two silver dollar coins commmemorating   Star Trek: The Original Series  — one portraying the iconic Captain James T. Kirk as played by William Shatner, and the other depicting the fictional starship USS Enterprise —  are among the Perth Mint's February releases. 

The Proof 1-ounce, .999 fine silver dollar coins are listed individually at $115 and as a pair at $230. They will be made available on Feb. 16, according to the Perth Mint's monthly product bulletin .

"The Captain James T. Kirk coin's reverse portrays a colour image of William Shatner as Captain James Tiberius Kirk as he appeared in Star Trek, against a representation of the  U.S.S. Enterprise  and the inscription CAPTAIN JAMES T. KIRK," the Perth Mint's online description reads.

"The  U.S.S. Enterprise  NCC-1701 coin's reverse is representative of the United Federation of Planets' logo and portrays a colour image of the  U.S.S. Enterprise  NCC-1701 flying through space as it appeared in the original Star Trek television series. The design includes the inscription STAR TREK THE ORIGINAL SERIES and U.S.S. ENTERPRISE NCC-1701," according to the Perth Mint.

Both coins feature the Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on their obverse along with the year 2015 and their monetary denomination.

The coins are issued as having legal tender status in Tuvalu. The Perth Mint will issue no more than 5,000 of the individually packaged coins, and no more than 1,500 of the two-coin sets will be issued.

Star Trek: The Original Series aired from 1966 to 1969 and spawned a number of motion pictures and spinoff programs including Star Trek: The Next Genration and Star Trek: Voyager .

The Perth Mint held a Star Trek coin launch on Jan. 30 at the 2015 World Money Fair in Berlin .

The Perth Mint of Australia has released a limited-edtion commemorative Spock coin that pays tribute to both the late, great Leonard Nimoy and his iconic Star Trek: The Orginal Series

'Star Trek' Coin Beams into Polynesia

The voyages of the U.S.S. Enterprise now include a stop in Polynesia. The tiny island nation of Tuvalu is issuing two commemorative coins to honor the legacy of the original "Star Trek" TV series of the 1960s.

The beaming visage of Captain James T. Kirk (played by William Shatner ) graces one of the coins, while his famous starship, the U.S.S. Enterprise is on the other one. Both images are in full color and include other " Star Trek " references, such as the logo of the United Federation of Planets.

"Since its debut, 'Star Trek' has developed into a cult phenomenon with a range of spinoff television series and a number of feature films being released over the past five decades," wrote Perth Mint Australia representatives in a news release .

If purchased as a set, the limited-edition coins come with Starfleet-worthy packaging: a "Star Trek" transporter machine which lights up when the lid is opened," representatives with the Perth Mint added. The coins are also available as individual purchases inside 'Star Trek'-themed boxes.

"Star Trek," based on a concept from Gene Roddenberry, aired on network television between 1966 and 1969. The series was meant to follow a five-year voyage of a starship and starred Kirk, Spock (a Vulcan alien played by Leonard Nimoy) and Leonard "Bones" McCoy (a doctor played by DeForest Kelley).

The series became immensely popular in reruns and was noted for breaking new ground in a few ways, including an interracial kiss.

The cast returned in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979, with most members reprising their roles across six films. Shatner starred in a seventh film in 1994, "Star Trek: Generations." Nimoy made two appearances in a rebooted movie version of the Original Series, which beamed up films in 2009 and 2013. Another "Star Trek" movie is expected to hit theaters in 2016.

Several other television series spun off from "Star Trek" in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. While there is no network-backed 'Star Trek' series on the air right now, several fan productions are ongoing.
