2023-2024 New Zealand Hunting Packages

Incredible new zealand hunting packages for red stag, himalayan tahr, chamois, fallow deer, & elk that deliver the unforgettable adventure you’ve always dreamed about..

Update January 2023:  New Zealand was closed to tourists from most countries for all of 2020 and 2021 as well as most of 2022 due to COVID. So, we still have a gigantic backlog of rescheduled hunts that we’re working through. For that reason, we’re not booking any new hunts or responding to any enquiries about hunting in New Zealand in the future until we get that cleared up.

At Big Game Hunting Adventures, we specialize in providing our clients with an outstanding New Zealand hunting safari from start to finish: expert assistance with planning for your trip, high quality accommodations, delicious food, a friendly and experienced hunting guide, and unparalleled hunting for numerous species of wild game.

Due to our exclusive access to high quality private land, we provide incredible New Zealand hunting safaris that few other outfitters can match. We specialize in hunting on foot for Red Stag (Red Deer), Himalayan Tahr, Elk (Wapiti), Alpine Chamois, and Fallow Buck.

Since we hunt on such well managed private land with good road access, we conduct our Chamois and Tahr hunts without using a helicopter . No other New Zealand hunting outfitter can match our historic success rate or consistently harvests big, mature Tahr and Chamois without using a helicopter like we do. For this reason, we are the premier destination for hunters who want a free range hunt on foot for these alpine species.

What Happens If I Don’t Take An Animal Included In A Package?

We historically have success rates approaching 100% on most species of game. However, since we do practice fair chase hunting, nothing is guaranteed and hunters do occasionally fail to take an animal they were after. So, if you do not take one of the animals included in your package, you will receive a $3,000 refund per species not taken. That being said, while we will make every effort to recover all animals wounded during our hunts, any animal wounded and not found will be charged full price.

What Is A Typical Day Like When Hunting New Zealand?

A normal hunting day normally begins early in the morning when the hunters wake up and eat breakfast. Generally, the hunters and the guide leave the lodge around sunrise in a 4×4 vehicle carrying a cooler full of drinks, snacks, and lunch. Depending on the game being pursued, weather conditions, and the desires and physical abilities of the hunter, you’ll either drive or hike to a good vantage point and glass for animals. Once one is located, the hunter and the guide will plan and execute a stalk on foot based on the prevailing wind and time of day.

The hunters will likely eat lunch during a break from the hunt in order to maximize the time afield. The hunt then continues until dusk, when the hunters return to the lodge for dinner and to prepare for the adventures of the next day!

What Are The Accommodations Like On A New Zealand Hunting Safari?

Hunters will stay in our well apportioned hunting lodge located between 5 and 40 minutes from our various hunting areas in the central South Island of New Zealand. With individual rooms, wifi internet, a communal dining room, an outdoor fireplace, and a miniature golf course the hunting lodge is the perfect location to relax after a long day of hunting.

Best Caliber For Hunting In New Zealand

Most of our hunters use cartridges like the .270 Winchester, 7mm Remington Magnum, .30-06 Springfield, and the .300 Winchester Magnum. Depending on the exact species you’re pursuing, be prepared to take a shot in the 50-350 yard range.

Bringing Your Rifle To New Zealand

Bringing a hunting rifle to New Zealand is a relatively simple exercise. In order to do so, you’ll need to apply for a visitor’s firearms license through the New Zealand Police web site . We will provide the necessary information to complete your application after you book. Start your application about a month before your hunt.

Among other things, the New Zealand Police ask for proof that you’re allowed to own firearms in your home country. If you live in a state or country that requires a firearm license, simply use that as proof. However, American hunters who do not live in a state with firearms licenses will need to use something else as proof, like a current hunting license. Other than that, applying for a New Zealand visitor’s firearms license is relatively painless and the Police are generally very helpful.

Once your application is complete, the Police will send you an email stating that your license is approved and that they’ll issue it to you upon arrival in Auckland. The license costs $25 NZ and you’ll need to pay for it in cash and with exact change .

Several weeks before your trip, contact Air New Zealand and inform them that you’ll have a firearm in one of your checked bags and ensure that they annotate that on every single flight in your itinerary, both coming and going. Let them know that you’ve already applied for your permit with the New Zealand Police.

Check the airline web site for details and carefully read their regulations regarding traveling with firearms. You’ll need to pack your rifle in a lockable, hard sided case. Air New Zealand also requires that you fly with your rifle bolt and all ammunition in a checked bag separate from your rifle.

Finally, fill out a US Customs Form 4457 and have it certified by a US Customs agent before you depart on your trip. This form serves as proof that you owned your rifle before you departed the United States and did not purchase it abroad. This form is required to bring your rifle back into the states after your hunt.

About hunting in New Zealand

Beautiful vistas and a large selection of game to hunt await the hunter visiting New Zealand. Whether you are a seasoned international hunter or just looking for your first international hunting experience, this South Pacific nation is an ideal destination. A hunt in New Zealand is easy to plan, and it is a safe and welcoming country. Because it is stable and friendly, New Zealand is also a perfect place to include your spouse or family in your adventure. New Zealand offers very diverse terrain that accommodates the desires or physical limitations of all hunters. Hunts can be conducted from the comfort of a five-star lodge with a swimming pool and spa, or from a tented spike camp in the wilderness. The easily accessible lush and grassy lowlands are home to estate hunts which can be accessed via trucks or ATVs. This is often a good option if a companion chooses to stay in the lodge and enjoy the amenities or do some touring. Hunters may also choose remote wilderness hunts in the high alpine ruggedness of the Southern Alps, which are accessed mainly by hiking or helicopter. These are more physical hunts with thick brush and steeper terrain. You can also choose a combination of both. A large selection of game awaits the hunter visiting New Zealand. The majestic red stag is always a favorite for hunters and usually the focus of the hunt. The Himalayan tahr is another of the pinnacle species in New Zealand and can be very challenging to hunt in the steep, rugged terrain where they live. Other species include the handsome fallow deer, chamois, and many other varieties of deer, goats, sheep, and even water buffalo. Again, this selection offers choices to fit every hunter’s tastes and capabilities. All of New Zealand is picturesque, with many locations combining coastal beaches transitioning up to majestic rocky peaks, making this a photographer’s dream. Touring is easily incorporated with a hunt and can include historic sites, glacier hikes, scenic train rides, paragliding, hiking, and helicopter scenic trips. New Zealand makes for a complete hunting vacation adventure that will be sure to please all tastes.

What you need to know

  • 1. Planning your trip
  • 2. Upon arrival
  • 4. After the hunt

Planning your trip

Flights are readily available into New Zealand from most countries. Entry into the country is easy and the authorities are friendly and make the process very comfortable. Visitors from a long list of visa waiver countries don’t need to apply in advance for a visa for a stay of three months or less in New Zealand—a visa will be issued on arrival. Check the list of visa waiver countries at https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas .

At least one month before you leave, apply for a temporary firearms license from the New Zealand Police. This is a simple process that can be done online. Your outfitter should assist you with this and provide any pertinent information, and you can also find information here .

The other option, if you’d rather avoid this process, is to rent a gun from your outfitter, but check with your outfitter to make sure they have guns available.

Upon arrival

After clearing immigration you’ll pick up your baggage from the carousel. If you have brought your own firearm, you must declare it to Customs, who will refer you to the New Zealand police. They will check your passport and other paperwork, collect the $25 license application fee (you will have to change currency in the arrivals area since this fee must be paid in New Zealand currency), and issue your firearms permit and import license. Be sure your hunting boots are clean; as an agricultural island nation New Zealand is extremely careful not to allow the import of foreign soils or nematodes.

The most sought-after big-game species in New Zealand are red stag, fallow deer, Himalayan tahr, and Alpine chamois, but there are many other huntable species on the North and South Islands including Arapawa sheep and several types of deer. All of these species are available in both free-range situations as well as behind high fences, so be sure to find out from your outfitter what type of hunt is on offer.

Specifics of hunting

Because all of New Zealand’s big-game species were introduced at one time, they are considered pests in many areas and therefore some methods of hunting that are not legal in other areas are accepted here. That sometimes include hunting from helicopters, which is not considered fair chase by most hunters. However, because of the steep mountains, many outfitters allow clients the option of being dropped off on a mountaintop by helicopter and continuing the hunt on foot; this is a widely accepted practice in some areas of the South Island. In other areas, however, hunts are conducted entirely on foot. Hunters pursuing the mountain game species should be aware that the terrain is extremely rugged, steep, and challenging.

After the hunt

Once your hunt is completed your trophies are usually transported to a local taxidermist to prepare them for export. In some cases, if time permits, you may take your trophies home with you but in most cases they will be shipped to you for import into your country for delivery to your taxidermist of choice. Trophies may also be mounted by one of New Zealand’s expert taxidermists and then shipped to you.

The terrain and hunting conditions are varied with large native Podocarp forests, scrub lands (reverted pasture) and open grass pastures which make for a perfect landscape for both the deer and the hunter. What time of year is best for deer hunting in NZ

Deer hunting in the north island is a great way to spend some quality time outdoors. The best time of year for deer hunting in NZ is early spring, when the deer are shed their winter coats and the days are starting to get longer. There are also a few other factors that can make deer hunting in NZ even more enjoyable, such as the fact that the deer are more active during this time of year and they are also easier to spot as they move around in search of food. So if you’re looking for a great opportunity to deer hunt, make sure to book your guided hunt in early spring.

Types of deer you can hunt in New Zealand

New Zealand is home to a variety of deer species that make for popular game animals. In the North Island, you can find red deer, sambar deer, and wapiti, while the South Island is home to red deer, whitetail deer, and fallow deer. The importance of a good guide while deer hunting in NZ

Deer hunting in New Zealand’s north island is an extremely popular tourist activity, and for good reason. New Zealand is home to some of the world’s most beautiful deer, and the country’s herds are managed carefully to ensure a sustainable population. BLUE DUCK STATION HUNTING

Hunting for conservation.

New Zealand’s only native land mammals are pekapeka or the short tailed and the long tailed bat. Humans have introduced all the other land mammals that now call New Zealand home. As these mammals are introduced there are often no predators, add in mild winters and an abundance of food resulting in unsustainable high numbers. Hunting plays an important part of controlling numbers so that our native flora and fauna are not destroyed.

At Blue Duck Station we believe in utilising the whole animal that we have hunted. We feed ourselves and our dogs and service our small mammal traps with the animal. Nothing is wasted and we know our meat is free range, fresh and organic.  Our knowledgeable guides will ensure you have a fantastic learning experience in our remote NZ bush.

Uncontrolled deer numbers can be detrimental for the forest. Problems include lack of regeneration, cleared undergrowth, trampled ground cover, compacted subsoils, exposed tree roots and stripped bark.

We offer guided hunting for both red and fallow deer; the first hunt here is always guided, repeat guests to our lodges are welcome to hunt without a guide by prearrangement and provided they have a valid New Zealand firearms licence. Please ensure that you book early for the roar.

Prices: $295 for a guided hunt or $500 full day (maximum 2 people per guide). Red deer: $500 for a meat deer or spiker. 8 pointers are $800 plus $100 for every additional point. Fallow deer: $250, for a meat deer or spiker. Stags are priced from $800 depending on the head.

Goats are browsers and will eat a wide range of plant material including shrubs, trees, grasses and weeds. They are also agile and can accelerate erosion and push holes in fences. Goats are in abundance on the station and hunting them with a guide is the perfect introduction to larger game for the inexperienced hunter or young fella who wants to learn stalking and bush skills.

Prices: $175 per person for a guided hunt (minimum two people – includes the animal)

Rabbits and hares are primarily an agricultural pest, competing with livestock for pasture and causing extensive damage to erosion prone soil to the point that land can be rendered useless. They can also cause damage to vulnerable native plant communities. Small game are the ideal introduction to shooting and processing your own meat.

Price: $120 per person including all animals

small_game_hunting

Feral pigs can cause long term impacts to the ecosystem, compete for food with native animals, can cause damage to kiwi feeding areas and they also kill lambs and cast sheep. Our pig hunting  includes a guide, ATV transport and experienced pig dogs.

Prices: $595 per guided hunt for up to two people (including the animal)

Deer Hunting

There's different types of deer you can go on the hunt for out here. First up, we’ve got the Red Deer – the big boys of the bush, complete with a mighty set of antlers. They’re a tough hunt, always on the alert and a bit nippy on their feet, which makes nabbing one all the more satisfying.

But, don’t overlook the Fallow Deer. They might not be as hefty as the Reds, but they're crafty little buggers with a spotted coat that's pretty nifty for camouflage. Hunting these fellas is about playing the long game – sneaky, quiet, and patient. Their antlers are a real sight, too – not as big, but broad and shovel-shaped. So whether you're out for the challenge of the Red or the cunning of the Fallow, each hunt's got its own flavour of fun.

man with his hunted deer red stag that he caught

Goat Hunting

A hunting classic here in NZ. First off, we've got the Chamois, which are as wild as a West Coast storm. They're all over the show, in the hills, making for a cracking good chase. They've got some serious agility, so you'll need to bring your A-game. But when you do manage to outsmart one, you'll have a great trophy.

Then there’s the Arapawa goats. Now these ones, they’re a bit special – I reckon they’re one of the rarest goat breeds in the world. They carry a wild, shaggy coat and they're tougher to hunt because they’re pretty scarce and love to hang out in the rougher patches. Bagging one of these is a real notch on the belt, showing you’ve got what it takes to track and hunt the cleverest of the lot. If you goat hunting in NZ is as good as a pie from a roadside dairy – bloody satisfying.

Goat hunting in NZ is as good as a pie from one of our dairy's – bloody good.

Why Free Range Hunting

Free-range hunting in NZ is the real deal – you're out in the open, stalking game in their natural environment, no fences, no feeds, just proper hunting.

It's the freedom of the hunt that's the drawcard. You, the land, and the game, all playing out the oldest game there is, but don't worry you're in good hands.

Choosing free-range means you’re in for an authentic experience. Its something special being out in nature and a great chance to reset and refresh you're brain in the crazy world we live in!

If you want the real hunting experience in New Zealand then you want to come and get out with us and see what it's all about.

At Poronui Hunting we want to make your New Zealand hunting trip as memorable and as easy as possible. And if you’re looking to hunt for a red stag trophy ,  you’ve come to the right place!

It’s important you have the right clothing and equipment for the climate and the hunting terrain in New Zealand. The weather can change suddenly, especially in the forest or at high elevation, so you need to be prepared. Four seasons in one day is a phrase that could have been coined to describe New Zealand, and, remember, the seasons are opposite those of the northern hemisphere.

New Zealand is a small mountainous country, and our climate is heavily influenced by maritime conditions. As a result, weather conditions can fluctuate significantly at any time of the year, and it pays to be prepared.

The terrain can be challenging and a good level of fitness is recommended, especially when stalking a stag over a couple of days. You’ll be traversing hillsides, dropping over mountains, and creeping through streams and gorges in search of your trophy stag.

Different species of deer can be found in hard antler practically all-year round in New Zealand. The main hunting season is between late February and the beginning of August when red stag, sika, and fallow deer are in hard antler. The rut commences mid-March for red stags, followed a month later for sika, fallow, and then rusa.

hunting trip nz

Chamois and tahr are both available in their summer coats down at Glazebrook during this time.

hunting trip nz

The start of the hunting season. Red and sika stags are in hard antler by the third week. A great time to look over plenty of stags in the open country and pick a really big trophy that is in good shape before the rigors of the rut.

hunting trip nz

Big monster. Early in the month the sika stags are in the open before they head to the bush before the rut. Mid-March it's all on for the red stags with the rut reaching its peak in late March and early April.

hunting trip nz

As the rut of the reds begins to tail off, the sika are really hitting their straps, usually towards the end of the second week. As if this isn't enough, fallow bucks will make themselves heard before the end of the month.

hunting trip nz

The red stags move away from the hinds during May in preparation for the winter. In the South Island the chamois and tahr coats are in their prime. The tahr commence their rut and bulls are generally higher in the mountains with groups of nannies.

hunting trip nz

In the South Island the chamois and tahr coats are still in their prime. Towards the end of June, expect to see stags out in the open in bachelor groups as they try to pile on condition.

hunting trip nz

July is a very good month to pick out a sika or red stag trophy. It's amazing what wanders out from the bush now that they have lost interest in females! Tahr and chamois coats are superb, though by now they will leave the nannies and start congretating in bachelor groups. In July, rusa stags will be making the odd grunt or two as they practice for the rut.

hunting trip nz

Last chance for a big red stag as the antlers will start dropping by the second week of the month. The smaller stags will not shed until September but the really big boys are a couple of weeks earlier. The rusa have come out of the woodwork and are grunting up a storm.

hunting trip nz

There are still great opportunities for chamois, tahr, and rusa.

hunting trip nz

Probably the last really good month for tahr and chamois, as their coats are climate-dependent and will start to change in the coming months. Rusa and sambar are still available, and, if fishing is on the program, the new season gets underway 1 October.

hunting trip nz

Rusa are the main trophy option in November. The spring growth drags the stags out onto the grass as they recover condition after the rut. It's also a popular time for a spring meat hunt.

hunting trip nz

Rusa and a spring meat hunt are the pre-Christmas highlights. It's possible to get chamois and tahr in their summer coats.

hunting trip nz

  • A good wind-proof, water-proof shell layer is essential at any time.
  • Layering for the conditions is preferable to wearing a heavily insulated coat, as, even in the middle of winter, a warm day would make this unbearable on the hill. This allows you to be comfortable during the chill of an early morning frost and then strip a layer or two off later as temperatures rise.
  • Camouflage-patterned clothing is an advantage but not essential, though colors need to be dull greens, browns, or olive if camouflage isn’t worn.
  • Solid footwear is important. Boots with good ankle support and a firm sole with good grip are very important, particularly in the steeper conditions found in the South Island.
  • Most New Zealand hunting is spot and stalk. Good binoculars are essential for spotting animals, with 10*40s ideal.
  • A spotting scope is ideal for judging trophies from a distance.

hunting trip nz

We work with some of the leading taxidermists in New Zealand, and can easily arrange to have your trophy mounted and sent to you back home. Taxidermy of a big stag usually costs around US$1,000. Subsequent animals are less.

hunting trip nz

If you prefer to expedite your trophy to your preferred taxidermist at home, we can help arrange this for you for an additional fee. The expediter will do the paperwork, pack the animal into the crate, and send it. Please note that meat can’t be exported to the United States.

hunting trip nz

We recommend flat shooting calibres, such as .300 Winchester magnum, which will cope with the range of species and terrain found in New Zealand. Visitors to New Zealand bringing firearms or ammunition must obtain a visitors firearms licence.

Licences can be obtained online. We recommend applying well in advance of your trip to ensure there are no issues. Note that if you intend to use a firearm and ammunition supplied by our lodges you will not require a visitor’s licence. In this instance you are under the active supervision of your guide and do not need an individual licence.

hunting trip nz

The New Zealand Government has introduced a new travel requirement for some visitors and transit passengers. It’s called the NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority), and travelers need to request theirs via the official mobile app or website. Approval can take up to 72 hours, so get yours before you go.

The NZeTA is required for travel from 1 October 2019.

Visit immigration.govt.nz/nzeta to find out if you need one.

Single and multi-day hunting trips throughout New Zealand

Hunting in New Zealand typically falls into one of three categories: public land free range, private land free range, or safari park "fair chase" trophy hunting.

At Total Safari NZ, we predominantly focus on the first two types, but of late we now also have access to one of New Zealand's premier trophy hunting properties located in the beautiful Central North Island high country.

We are focused on providing hunts with ethical hunting practices, where a "hunt" is exactly that, animals have a fair chance of escape and the hunter's skills are put to the test. Hunting for kai (food) and enjoying the stunning locations is always our primary objective for our clients, but we also understand the thrill of chasing a large stag or boar for the ultimate  souvenir.

Our strike rate for our customers is second to none and we put that down to experience, perseverance and a range of amazing hunting locations. Our single and multi-day hunting experiences throughout New Zealand target Red, Fallow and Sika deer and we also hunt wild boar, wild goats, and a range of small game and gamebirds (in season).

Our hunting packages can be, altered, combined or fully tailored to suit you or your groups goals, timeframe and budget. So get in touch with us to start planning your hunting adventure today!

All prices are in (NZD) New Zealand Dollars

WILD BOAR “PIG HUNT”

Cost: $750 Per day (up to 4 people)

Available: March - November

They are a real test of a hunter's skill and toughness. Not everyone is able to get in and “mix it” in the scrub with one of these beasts! At Total Safari NZ, we hunt pigs mostly up close and personal with dogs and knives.

A day of genuine kiwi, free range hunting for hogs, is the aim of the game here. We use a trained pack of specialist dogs and we probe remote locations to try and outwit one of these exceptional animals on their home turf.

The thrill of the chase and unpredictability of the hunt is one of the best and most addictive parts of pig hunting in New Zealand.

Price includes:

A day's Pig hunting (up to 4 people).

Accommodation and meals if more than one day.

Expert hunting guides and dogs.

Any hunting equipment required.

Field dressing of animals for butchery.

What You Need to Know About Hunting in New Zealand

Have you got game.

Hunting in New Zealand is a way of getting outdoors surrounded by stunning scenery and helping with the conservation effort in New Zealand . When we pesky humans started migrating to New Zealand, we introduced a whole bunch of species that are a pest to the natural ecological environment, as well as farming and forestry. With no natural predators to these game species in New Zealand, there is a vast amount of game to hunt in New Zealand.

Hunting independently in New Zealand needs to be planned well in advance of arrival, as you need a visitor’s firearms license before you can apply for the New Zealand hunting licenses. So the best option for visitors who want to try a spot of hunting is to go with a qualified New Zealand license holder such as a specialised hunting tour. For those on a working holiday, this could mean your WWOOFing host , as hunting is a popular sport among farmers in New Zealand.

How to Get into Hunting in New Zealand

There are a few ways you can learn how to hunt or enjoy a hunting experience in New Zealand as an overseas visitor.

  • Use a commercial hunting guide – Although guided big game hunting is ridiculously expensive, you can find some cheaper options from locals who are more into the conservation side of hunting rather than making a big buck.
  • Join a local hunting club – For those staying in New Zealand on a working holiday or an extended break, settle in a town or city in New Zealand and look up the local hunting clubs online. Chances are you will meet experienced hunters who can teach you some skills.
  • Do some WWOOFing – Again, if you are here on a working holiday, do some work for accommodation on a farm. Check out WWOOFing profiles that mention hunting and let your WWOOFing hosts know that you are easer to learn. Check out more about WWOOFing at Everything You Need to Know About WWOOFing in New Zealand

Game Species in New Zealand

Here’s a list of the main species that you can hunt in New Zealand.

The Best North Island Hunting Locations

Manawatu-whanganui.

You can find some of the most remote hunting locations in the North Island’s forested Manawatu-Whanganui region. Fallow deer, wild pigs and goats can be hunted with Remote Adventures near Waitotara. Delve further in the Whanganui National Parktohunt pig, deer and goat in the backpacker-style farm stay of Blue Duck Station. Learn more about the area in Manawatu and Whanganui destination categories.

The Wairarapa District of Wellington holds three forest parks ideal for hunting: Tararua, Rimutaka and Aorangi. You can hunt on some stunning coastal properties for deer with Wildside Walks.

The Best South Island Hunting Locations

Nelson/tasman.

Hunt red deer, tahr, chamois, fallow, goats and pigs in the Nelson Lakes National Park . There’s also the opportunity to hunt small game like ducks, black swan, geese, pukeko, pigeons, quail, rabbits, hares and possums. Strike Adventures has guided tours in the area.

There are a few farms in the Canterbury region offering hunting trips, such as Kaiwarua Station and Caberfeidh Farms guiding in the aptly-named Hunter Hills. Also, try Rata Peaks Station, hunting in theHakatere Conservation Park and Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park for red deer, tahr, goats and rams.

Otago + Southland

The Hawea Conservation Park has an abundance of game. There are local hunting guides to take to you areas of red deer, chamois and tahr. Delve into the Fiordland National Park from Te Anau via jet boat with FishJet for guided fishing and hunting.
