Looking for the best Balacar tours available? Whether you’re already in town or visiting for a day, here you’ll find the ultimate adventures to explore the Lake of 7 Colors. Read on!

Bacalar is a small town located in the southern part of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico . It is known for its breathtaking lagoon, often referred to as the Lake of Seven Colors.

I had heard friends talking about the Bacalar Lagoon since 2017 or so, yet I never added this destination to my itinerary till my last visit. Big mistake! Bacalar quickly became one of my favorite destinations in all of Mexico. The color of the water is unreal!

The range of tour options available in Bacalar is wide. There are tours within Bacalar in which visitors can explore the lagoon and swim in its crystal-clear waters . You can even visit nearby attractions like the Cenote Negro or the Pirate Canal.

Additionally , some tours depart from other popular tourist destinations in the region. You can start your day trip in Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, or other towns along the Yucatan Peninsula.

These tours often include transportation, a professional guide to explore the area with, and meals.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor to Bacalar or a returning traveler, there’s no shortage of adventures to be experienced.

👉 Trust these Bacalar tour picks? Absolutely. My six months in Mexico and ten years in the travel biz have taught me what makes a tour unforgettable. These Bacalar tours are my top choices, chosen for their engaging itineraries, expert guides, and a focus on sustainable practices.

I generally use Viator and Get Your Guide to book tours around the world. I especially recommend them for their great cancellation policy. If your travel plans change, you can cancel most activities up to 24 hours in advance and get a full refund.

Limited time? These are the very best tours 👇

This was a great tour of Lake Bacalar. I felt like I was visiting the lake with a friend, and not with a commercial tour. We were able to visit many places and could dive in areas that had no one but us. Jonathan was very informative and I also appreciated how conscious he is about preserving the lake. We felt he was willing to adapt to our needs and wishes. Also, the sandwiches given as the snack were delicious and homemade! I definitely recommend this tour! MariaIsabel_R – Read more reviews

Getting from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar: A traveler review

Find the ride you need in.

Bacalar’s majestic blue water entices travelers to visit. We’ll help you explore the best options for traveling there from Playa del Carmen.

Bacalar Pier

If Playa del Carmen’s non-stop party scene leaves you wanting to get back in touch with nature, Bacalar is an excellent getaway. However, one look at a map might have you scratching your head about how to arrive there.

There’s no doubt about it—a trip to Bacalar requires planning. Unlike traveling to Playa’s nearby destinations like Tulum and Cancun, taking a minivan from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar isn’t as easy, and bus departures are less frequent. Nevertheless, this trip is doable and worth it. So, I’ll show you how to get from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar based on my experience.

  • Where exactly is Bacalar?

Bacalar is a small town that sits on beautiful Lake Bacalar, near the Belize border. The distance from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar is about 280 kilometers.

tour de playa del carmen a bacalar

Locals lovingly refer to Bacalar as the “Lagoon of Seven Colors” because of its many shades of blue, ranging from midnight blue to turquoise. The brightness of the blue colors varies depending on environmental factors , but I can attest that even in cloudy weather, the lake is utterly alluring.

  • Transportation options to Bacalar

You have three main options for getting from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar. They include:

  • Taking a car from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar
  • Taking a minivan from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar
  • Taking an ADO bus from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar

Traveling to Bacalar by car or minivan is advantageous because it’ll get you there in as little as three hours if you don’t hit traffic. They also offer 24/7 departures since they’re private transfers. On the other hand, the ADO bus is a great fit for budget travelers, and it’s about a four-hour journey.

  • My experience taking the ADO bus

If you’re a budget traveler, the first question on your mind is likely: Is there a bus from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar?

There is, but make sure you head to the ADO Playa del Carmen Alterna bus station, not the ADO Playa del Carmen Turistica bus station. Otherwise, unless you left enough time to take a taxi between the two stations, you’ll miss your bus and will need to buy another ticket. Ouch!

The ADO bus schedule from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar is another factor to consider since there are only a few bus departures per day. I decided to spend two nights at the lake. So, when I was looking at how to travel from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar, I chose a morning departure to make the most of my first day there.

ADO bus amenities

Unlike taking a minivan to Bacalar, the ADO bus offers larger seats with more legroom. You’ll also have access to an onboard restroom, a personal standard outlet and USB charging port, and extra-large windows for enjoying the views.

tour de playa del carmen a bacalar

Speaking of the views, it’s unlikely you’ll find any Playa del Carmen to Bacalar bus reviews raving about the scenery. However, the highway transforms from an overly developed area to lush tropical foliage the further you drive away from Playa.

Getting your timing right: The ADO Bacalar bus schedule

There are only four ADO bus departures per day. Therefore, it’s best to book your bus tickets to Bacalar in advance since seats can sell out, especially for the morning departures.

The Playa del Carmen to Bacalar bus schedule is as follows:

Your bus will make a quick stop in Tulum to drop off passengers and let new ones on (so, no, you’re not in the clear to move from your assigned seat once you depart Playa).

Vendors will walk down the aisle selling snacks and soda. However, if you’d like to purchase something else or use a real restroom, you can hop off the bus—just make it quick and let your driver know so they don’t leave without you!

Playa del Carmen to Bacalar bus prices

The ADO bus ticket from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar costs about $30 per person for the one-way ride. I recommend booking a round trip ticket if you’ll be returning to Playa since you’ll receive a discount.

Preparing for your bus arrival in Bacalar

How long is it from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar by bus, you ask? ADO says it takes 4 hours, 10 minutes, and this was about spot-on with my experience. What I wasn’t prepared for, however, was the drop-off location.

tour de playa del carmen a bacalar

Since you’ll be taking the bus from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar from a large bus station complete with labeled parking spaces for the buses, it felt a bit jarring to be let off on the side of a busy highway in Bacalar. Be prepared with sunscreen or an umbrella—there’s no cover from the elements unless you run inside the nearby ADO waiting area.

Nevertheless, ADO’s bus “station” in Bacalar is a short walk from the center and lakeshore; within ten minutes, you’ll get your first glimpse of the beautiful blue colors that Bacalar is so famous for.

  • Taking a day trip from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar

You understandably want to see as much as possible during your time in the Yucatan, so you might be wondering— how long is the drive from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar, and is it possible to visit Bacalar in a day?

tour de playa del carmen a bacalar

The best way to get from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar for a day trip is by private car or minivan, which will take you around 3 – 3.5 hours each way. Needless to say, it makes for a long day on the road. However, Bacalar is small, and its main tourist attraction is taking a 2-hour boat tour on the lake, so it’s technically feasible to visit it in one day.

Renting a car in Playa del Carmen is another great option, and there are many car rental facilities around 5 th Avenue. Unlike in Playa, taking a car to Bacalar is easier since it offers more parking.

Regardless of how you decide to travel to Bacalar, it’s a stunning destination that deserves a spot on your Mexico itinerary .

  • cgiesbrecht999 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Contoy Island was Disappointing, Limited varieties to see. We took the trip hoping to see some interesting sites and birds but it turned out about half of the day is traveling on the shuttle or ferries with a short tour on Contoy. The rest of the time is free time. You can spend the free time shopping in the Isla Mujeres or on the beach. After getting to Contoy you can go for a 15 minute guided tour there is nothing else to do but have a lunch and then sit on the beach. You can’t walk the paths without a guide so your options are limited. The place is poorly looked after with few amenities except for “self composting bathrooms”. Make sure you bring a towel to sit on as there are no chairs or loungers provided at the beach. If you are someone that gets sea sick take some before heading to Contoy. • deanm217 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Good time We took the tour that started with a pickup at our hotel at 6:50 am. Unfortunately I thought it was 6:50 pm so we had made arrangements that morning to do the Aquarium and slept in. After we got back to the hotel, we had our bellhop check on taxi rates to take us to the Xcaret Park. That took us about 1.5 hrs going. The taxi driver who spoke adequate English stayed at the park and waited until the show was over. It cost us $180 round trip, but I had made the mistake so I paid it. We enjoyed the park. Look for the different routes on the walkways. There is plenty to see, and we enjoyed the flat-boat ride. They had a horse arena with a really good show. We followed the brown pathway to the dinner and show. We had a great seat at center court just. few rows back. The arena is set up like the Dixie Stampede if you have been to one. The food wasn’t much to my liking. I’m not saying that is bad, it was just not my cup of tea, lots of seafood type things and no beef or pork. But, when the show started about 7:00 pm, it entertained us the whole time. It had a lot of different things going on to keep it fun for all ages. I would definitely recommend Xcaret, but not the 6:50 pickup for us old timers. It was hot and muggy. Read more Written August 19, 2023

Safety number 1 concern. Must remove shoes when you initially boarding all were placed in big bag … music while boarding would be a good touch to until you reach the snorkel spot. 12+ to snorkel after a signed waiver. Photographer on Board , theres a stop to take a pic with a shark. The lunch buffet (isle Mujeres) was amazing have time for a massage and play time in the beach. The next stop I can’t recall the name you are there for 2 hours here you can rent golf carts and roam about there are local bars and restaurants. The return back was even better the fun really cranked up here. Shots pouring up, music blaring , sax/trombone player was very nice touch and delightful. Two important tips -- do not take transportation to the port. With the number of people they pick up and drop off, you could add 1-2 hours just getting there and back. I would take private transportation to the catamaran. Second, where they drop you off is a bit overwhelming -- people trying to sell you things and getting in your face to buy things. Just scoot over to a restaurant and enjoy the beach. Read more Written June 9, 2023

Hay varias formas de acercarse a este mágico lugar, por ello, aquí te dejamos la información que necesitas para saber cómo llegar a Bacalar desde Playa del Carmen . Elige la forma que más te convenga y ¡nos vemos allá!
