The coast-hugging Cinque Terre Express.

10 of the best railway journeys in Italy

On train rides from Venice to Sicily, best book a window seat on these spectacular Italian trips

The Cinque Terre Express

One of Italy’s loveliest rail routes is the coast-hugging track along the Cinque Terre in Liguria. Called an express, it’s more of a gentle pootle above all five of the Unesco-listed seaside villages in this celebrated national park. Setting off from La Spezia, the route ends in Levanto. You can hop on and off for strolls along the labyrinthine lanes of colourful villages, such as Riomaggiore, Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia and Manarola – or stay put and drink in the sight of tiny village-crested bays and inlets, fronted by pristine thumbnail beaches. The Cinque Terre Train Card allows access to all hiking routes and unlimited train travel between the villages. One- to three-day options from €18.20 at cinqueterre.eu.com

The Circumetnea, Sicily

The Circumetnea railway links the Sicilean cities of Catania and Giarre/and goes around Mount Etna.

If you don’t fancy hiking Sicily’s most famous volcano, a thrilling alternative is the Ferrovia Circumetnea from Catania that encircles Etna’s base, ending its journey in Riposto. This dramatic journey sees you rattling across lava beds, past fields of prickly pears and little hamlets, then soaking up across Etna’s foothills views of its snow-capped, smoking peak. Constructed in 1898, it’s 110-km long and the whole route takes around three-and-a-half hours. Try to board one of the green or red vintage rolling stock that look like dinky vintage school buses – they were made by Fiat in the 1950s. Tickets cost €7.25 from circumetnea.it

The Bernina Express

The Bernina Express

Train buffs consider the legendary Unesco-listed Bernina Express route from Italian Tirano to St Moritz to be one of the most spectacular rail journeys in the world. The highest railway in Europe, it has spiral viaducts to get up the mountains. At times, the train clings to the mountainside thousands of feet up – and you’re rewarded head-swivelling with views across the Brusio viaduct, then there are waterfalls and glaciers, and up to the ear-popping peaks of the Italian and Swiss Alps. Autumn is pretty when the leaves change colour and begin to fall and winter, when the mountains are snow-draped. The Italian section of the Bernina Express starts from Tirano, which has links with trains from Milan. The four-hour train journey costs from £49. Panoramic carriage seats need to be booked in advance at rhb.ch

Reggio Calabria to Scilla

Reggio Calabria to Scilla it

It only takes 20 minutes, but if you have time to kill before catching the ferry to Sicily, the train ride from Reggio Calabria’s promenade-set Stazione Lido to the seaside town of Scilla is a delight. Leaving the rather ugly port area, you can expect glimpses of neat coves and sandy beaches, then little islets and fishing boats, and, on the approach towards the Strait of Messina, Mount Etna itself. Arriving at Scilla, spend time exploring this charming fishing village set on ochre-green cliffs. Highlights include its sprawling clifftop castle, broad sandy beach and excellent seafood restaurants. Tickets one way from £2.10 through Rail Europe

Trenino Verde, Sardinia

Trenino Verde, Sardinia

Sardinia’s dinky Trenino Verde (little green trains) trundle along narrow-gauge tracks across some of the island’s most stunning regions – all the way from the coast to the mountains. Don’t expect speed: tThese dedicated routes are famously slow as recounted by DH Lawrence in The Sea and Sardinia . But who needs to be in a rush when you have the chance to discover the wild heart of this extraordinary island? Pulled by a 1956 diesel locomotive, one of the most dazzling routes travels from Arbatax to Villagrande. Across the flats of Tortoli, you climb to mountainous Gennargentu national park. Daylong guided Trenino Verde train journeys including multiple stop-offs at points of interest and delicious food tastings cost from €55pp, sardegnatreninoverde.com

Little Trains of the Dolomites

Little Trains of the Dolomites it

The elegant vintage Renon narrow-gauge mountain railway is one of the oldest and steepest funicular railways in Europe. It chugs all the way to Collalbo, past undulating meadows and towering jagged mountain ranges. Join an escorted rail holiday and you get expert guidance around the mountainous rail routes. The trip includes a ride on line 700 between Mezzolombardo and Caldes, with spectacular views over Dolomiti castles and a dramatic ascent up one of Europe’s steepest tracks, the Mendola funicular railway. The nine-day Little Trains of the Dolomites tour runs in September and May from £1,499pp, including B&B accommodation and excursions, arenatravel.com

Rome to Siracuse

Noto, the capital of baroque stylethe street leading down at the famous town of Sicily – Noto, the capital of baroque style

Travel to Sicily by rail doesn’t sound easy and yet it’s one of the best direct long-haul Italian journeys around. Your train is shunted across the Strait of Messina via ferry while you can go up on deck for a breath of sea air. Kick off from Rome in your air-conditioned carriage for the 11-hour scenic ride to Naples and Salerno, then on to Taormina, Catania and Syracuse. Once in Sicily, coastal and mountain views turn to seascapes as well as glimpses of snow-dusted Mount Etna. Book in advance for super-economy tickets from £66.70 one way, second class at Rail Europe , links with Trenitalia

Venice to Florence

Venice to Florence

Ditch the car and link two of Italy’s top must-see cities by rail. It takes just over two hours to swap the canals of Venice for Florence’s meandering Arno. Travelling by train ensures a stress-free ride and some of the most gorgeous snapshots of the country along the way. En route you pass the exquisite Renaissance towns of Bologna, Prato and Ravenna, then through the mountains of Emilia-Romagna and alongside the vine-terraced hills of Tuscany. If you’re after a direct route, catch the high-speed Frecciarossa – but a more leisurely journey, admittedly with changes, ensures time to absorb those dreamy panoramas. Tickets from £26.50 one way, booked in advance from Rail Europe

Venice to Rome rail holiday

Venice to Rome rail holiday

A small-group rail holiday is a great way to take in Venice, Florence and Rome, staying in hotels along the way and experiencing local culture. Highlights include leisurely walks, museum visits and sipping an Aperol spritz in the quieter canal-side cafés of Venice; then a detour rail trip to Pisa. In Bologna, the focus is on food, with a tasting session of DOP meats, cheeses, wines and tortellini-making in the food markets of the Quadrilatero quarter, and in Florence and Rome, there’s plenty of time to explore the highlights of both these cities. A seven-day Venice to Rome by Railway tour costs from £1,498pp, including return flights, with responsibletravel.com

Rimini to Lecce

Follow Italy’s sparkling Adriatic by regional rail and you’ll be rewarded with dreamy sea views and glimpses of historic towns and small fishing villages. The line from Rimini down to Lecce is an absolute treat – and though it takes about six hours, you’ll shore up some unforgettable images. Swapping Rimini’s glitzy beach clubs for workaday Pesaro, the Frecciabianca stops at Ancona, Pescara and Foggia in Puglia. Occasionally, the track heads inland beneath the hills of Umbria and Tuscany, finally reaching dazzling baroque Lecce. Celebrate with a local pasticciotto and a spritz – almost as delightful as the journey itself. Tickets one way from £55.70, through Rail Europe or Trenitali

Italy’s 10 most spectacular rail journeys.

From breathtaking alpine adventures to sun-soaked seaside trundles, Italy’s trains are the perfect way to explore this fabled country...

1. Rome to Pompeii

The high-speed line connects the capital to Pompeii (Shutterstock)

The high-speed line connects the capital to Pompeii (Shutterstock)

A new train linking Italian capital Rome and the ancient city of Pompeii has recently started running on every Sunday of the month, with the service taking less than two hours to get from A to B.

For the first time, visitors to Rome will be able to take an easy day trip to this impeccably preserved archaeological wonder without having to change at Naples, while passengers will be entertained and educated en route by videos about the Roman town.

Although this route is more about the destination than the journey, it's an exciting step for Italian tourism who are using modern transport to make their cultural landmarks more accessible.

2. Tirano to St. Moritz on the Bernina Express

The Bernina Express in winter (Shutterstock)

The Bernina Express in winter (Shutterstock)

This breathtaking train journey between the Italian city of Tirano to the Swiss Alpine resort of St. Moritz isn’t just one of the most amazing rail journeys in Italy: train buffs regard it as one of the most spectacular train routes in the world.

UNESCO have listed it as a World Heritage Route, recognising not just the incredible scenery, but the engineering skill needed to build it as well. It is the highest railway in Europe and uses spiral viaducts like the one at Brusio, to climb into the mountains. Expect tunnels, bridges, mountains and glaciers. And the most memorable four hours of your life.

3. The Cinque Terre Express

A train at Manarola station in Cinque Terre (Shutterstock)

A train at Manarola station in Cinque Terre (Shutterstock)

The rail journey between Levanto and La Spezia only takes 20 minutes or so but it is arguably one of the most spectacular in Italy. It hugs the Ligurian coast and links the five pastel-coloured villages that that cling to the cliffs here.

Unsurprisingly, much of the journey is spent in tunnels. But the snapshots of vineyards, olive groves and picture-perfect villages when you emerge into the sunlight are all the more intense for that.

Besides, the joy here is alighting and exploring the colourful villages by foot.

Those feeling energetic could catch the train to Riomaggiore and walk along the Cinque Terre trail to Monterosso. Each village reached offers a plethora of restaurants, bars and cafes to refuel. And a railway station to help you on your way when your legs get tired.

4. reggio calabria to scilla.

Short and sweet, this 13-minute train ride from Reggio Calabria’s lungomare (promenade) to the seaside town of Scilla certainly offers a lot of bang for your buck.

Heading towards the Strait of Messina, you’ll spot the silhouette of Mount Etna in Sicily and pass inlets and islets and fishing boats bobbing in the water.

Finally, you’ll reached Scilla, named after the Greek mythological creature that feasted on sailors, but today a popular beachside fishing village, dominated by the Castello Ruffo, an ancient fortress sitting on a hill overlooking the town.

5. Trenino Verde, Sardinia

The Little Green Train of Sardinia (Shutterstock)

The Little Green Train of Sardinia (Shutterstock)

You don’t catch a train in Sardinia to get somewhere fast. The trains on the island have been notoriously slow since D.H. Lawrence recounted his long and languid journeys on them in his book The Sea and Sardinia .

That’s not to say they should be avoided. Sardinia’s quaint Trenino Verde (little green trains) trundle through some of the most spectacular parts of the island, rattling along narrow-gauge lines from the mountains to the sea.

Five routes have been reopened, exclusively for tourism. Choose your route and enjoy the ride.

6. venice to florence.

From Venice’s Saint Mark’s Square to the Florence’s iconic Duomo, what better way to visit the two stalwarts of Italian culture than by train?

It only takes two hours to get from the canals of Venice to the banks of the Arno in Florence. But you’ll be rewarded with views of some of the loveliest parts of Italy along the way. The Renaissance cities of Bologna, Prato and Ravenna await, as well as the mountains of Emilia-Romagna and the rolling hills of Tuscany.

It’s the best of Italy, but in a train ride.

7. Verona to Bolzano

The mighty Dolomites are the stars of this incredible rail journey from Verona to the German-speaking city of Bolzano. One minute you’re trundling through Renaissance villages. The next you’re climbing up through sleepy farmland and thick pine forests towards the glowering, jagged mountains.

It’s a magical three hours of grazing cows, alpine valleys and monumental snow-capped peaks. If you go in winter, Bolzano’s annual Christmas market awaits, where German-inspired stalls sell all kinds of Tyrolean treats.

8. The Circumetnea, Sicily

The Ferrovia Circumetnea – Round Etna Railway – does what it says on the tin. It starts in Catania, circles Mount Etna and finishes up in Riposto. Along the way it rattles through beds of lava and offers unmatched views of Mount Etna, a grumbling, smoking, live volcano.

The railway was built in the 1890s and is 110 kilometres long and takes three hours – a little bit longer if you are lucky enough to ride in one the older rolling stock such as Littorina, a train built by Fiat that looks like a 1950s bus.

9. the regional train from rimini to bari.

It might be just a regional train, but the Trenitalia service from Rimini Station to Bari Centrale certainly delivers first-class vistas. Following almost the entirety of Italy's glittering Adriatic Coast, you’ll be treated to mesmerising ocean views and the delightful fishing villages and historic towns that dot Italy’s east coast.

The line does head inland occasionally, treating you to views of the rolling hills of Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio. But it is uninterrupted views of the coastline you’ll remember. Make sure to celebrate with a hearty riso patate e cozze once you get to Bari. It’s almost as perfect as the trip.

10. The Inter-City from Rome to Catania

The Bay of Naples (Shutterstock)

The Bay of Naples (Shutterstock)

Arguably the best long haul train journey in Italy, you’ll start in the Eternal City and finish in Catania on the east coast of Sicily close to nine hours later.

Along the way you'll pass through some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the country, enjoying sweeping views of the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius and craggy Calabria.

It’s a direct train too, so your train will be ferried across the Straits of Messina on a ship, one of the few places in the world where this still happens.

Trains in Italy

My Introduction to Italian Trains

With regards to exploring Italy in general; trains are great, but some of the countryside regions and little villages aren't well covered by the rail network. There are exceptions though,  the Cinque Terre villages have a superb train service and so too does the coast of Calabria

Many decades ago, long before I met and married my Italian wife, Maria, I visited Italy by train on a Eurail Pass. It was a great first introduction to Italy, and I saw all the main cities - the typical tourist cities of Rome, Venice, and Florence . I loved it.

However, to really discover the Italian countryside, a car is best.  Base yourself in one town or village,  find a characteristic place to stay,  and explore.

Having said that, there are definitely some train journeys one really should take . If you are a supporter , you are always welcome to contact me for personalized advice.

Question 1: Which are the most beautiful train rides in Italy?

  • Turin to Grenoble through the Val di Susa. There are plans for a high speed train connection through this area known as the TAV, linking Turin with Paris, but it's facing a lot of protests and the slow train that exists at present is perfect for enjoying the view.
  • Turin to Nice through the mountains and the French and Piedmont countryside. The scenery and little villages en route are lovely. You normally have to change trains in Ventimiglia and sometimes Cuneo.
  • Tropea to Pizzo offers an unparalleled view of one of Italy's most beautiful coastlines: coves, beaches, and glimpses of Italian Mediterranean blue, which is a blue like no other.
  • The fast train from Milan to Rome or vice-versa is amazing. It covers the 350 miles/560kms in two hours and forty-five minutes and races through some beautiful scenery in Tuscany and Lazio.
  • Traveling aboard the Autumn Foliage Train between Domodossola and Locarno is one of the most beautiful journeys in Italy. The journey is around 50 kilometers and takes two hours. Spectacular doesn't come close to describing the magnificent scenery.
  • The Cinque Terre Train is a must - we wrote about the train and the Cinque Terre here.
  • Journey from Bari to Matera.  The train journey is incredible and Bari and Matera are two of the most fascinating towns in Italy. Both should be on your list of must visit destinations.
  • Trans-Siberian between Sulmona and Isernia. The name, Trans-Siberian, came about because of the winter scenery which recalls Siberia. Summer or winter, this high altitude journey through the mountains of Abruzzo is spectacular.
  • Volcano Train of Sicily : Circumetnea is the line's official name, and it offers a three-hour journey (110 km) through villages, vineyards, and pistachio groves while Etna glowers down upon it all.
  • Asciano - Monte Antico line : a steam train journey through some of the most beautiful Tuscan scenery. The line was closed in 1994 but was reopened by a group of dedicated volunteers. The video below has more on the route - although in Italian, the beauty of the area is clearly shown.
  • Venice Simplon-Orient-Express: This iconic train journey starts in Venice and takes you through the stunning Italian countryside to Paris. The journey takes about 17 hours and offers luxurious accommodations, gourmet dining, and breathtaking views of the Alps and French countryside. This train journey is truly an unforgettable experience.
  • Bernina Express: This train journey takes you through the stunning Swiss Alps, but starts and ends in Italy. The train departs from Tirano and travels through 55 tunnels and 196 bridges, including the iconic Landwasser Viaduct. The journey takes about 2.5 hours and takes you to the Swiss town of St. Moritz.

Question 2: How fast are Italian trains?

Answer: The maximum recorded speed in testing is 393.8 km/h (244.7 mph), although operating speeds are limited to 300 km/h (186 mph). The fastest trains are the Frecciarossa 1000   trains, followed by the Italo trains that can reach a maximum speed of 360 km/h (160mph).

Question 3: When is the best time to buy train tickets?

Answer: I find that booking for the fast trains between one and three months before traveling generally works out the cheapest. If you are booking a regional train, the prices are generally the same regardless of when you book. A good idea is to download the Trenitalia app so that you can buy tickets online, and then the ticket inspector simply scans the QR code on your phone.

Question 4: How to avoid fines when traveling by train in Italy

Answer: If you don't buy tickets online, you will need to physically validate your train ticket using the little machines on the platform before boarding, plus fill in the date and sign if it is a multi-day ticket. Not validating your train ticket, together with the fines from getting caught in ZTL zones, is the most common way tourists get fined in Italy. You can find out about ZTL zones and other mistakes tourists to Italy MUST NOT make here.

Question 5: Are trains in Italy expensive?

Answer: No, the tickets are very affordable and, considering the quality of Italian trains, are often a real bargain.

Destination Italy

Whether you are intending to visit for the Roman history or the Renaissance art, for the vertiginous mountains or the sun-soaked beaches, for the food, the wine, or the fashion, ultimately we all go to Italy for the same reason: to get a slice of la dolce vita .

Many visitors to Italy spend the majority of their time in the country’s major cities, and with good reason. Thousands of years of world-shaping history echo your every step in Rome; beautiful works of art by Michelangelo, Caravaggio and Leonardo da Vinci are dotted throughout Florence; and the canals, piazzas and squares of Venice are rightly world-famous. Each city offers incredible and varied food and whilst the south of the country is much warmer, the entire peninsula benefits from a beautiful Mediterranean climate. To only explore her cities would, however, overlook many of Italy’s greatest charms. The Dolomites form a formidable barrier to the North and provide fantastic skiing or hiking depending on the season. Tuscany’s rolling hills are home to charming medieval towns and castles, as well as terracotta-tiled farmhouses, and beaches on both the West and East coast offer the perfect chance to relax and enjoy seafood, freshly-made ice cream, or perhaps even a glass of prosecco!

Italy is very well connected to the rest of Europe, offering visitors an exciting choice of how and where to enter the country. If you are searching for that once-in-a-lifetime experience, the Orient Express runs from Venice to London and offers guests the ultimate luxury train experience. Alternatively, you might want to travel via one of the spectacular rail routes across the Alps, with stop en route in Germany, France or Switzerland. Once you have arrived, Italy has a good rail network with a mixture of high-speed and traditional trains enabling you to explore this beautiful country in ease and comfort.

Interrailing Italy

Interrailing Italy: A Summary

Interrailing Italy is straightforward, as their train system is one of the best in Europe. But, here are a few extra things to bear in mind when you are planning your trip:

🚇 The rail network in Italy connects the entire country. So if you’re worried about being able to get from A to B, don’t be! Even smaller, ‘off the beaten track’ villages and towns will have a train station. Regional trains and night trains are available in most major cities.

🚌 Journeys around Italy can also be made by bus. If you have a section of a journey that cannot be made by train, the FlixBus can be used for inter-city routes.

🇮🇹 The interrailing pass will include all trains in Italy, including Le Freece high-speed trains (although you’ll need a reservation), Trenitalia and Trenord.

🚝 You must make a seat reservation for high-speed trains, even with an interrailing pass . Seat reservations are usually around 10 EUR. This can be done on the interrailing website or at the train station. You can guarantee your seat easily there for either high-speed trains or regional trains.

Interrailing Italy

Interrailing Italy: Route 1

🇮🇹 Duration: Two weeks

🚇 Four locations in Italy: Naples – Rome – Florence – Bologna

If you’re interrailing Italy for two weeks , this is a good route to see some of the best sights in Italy. As Italy’s train network is quick and easy to use, you will be able to see some of the best cities the country has to offer in a short amount of time.

This interrailing Italy route starts in Naples. If you can, fly directly to there to cut out any extra train time from your home country. In Naples, you can spend a day or two exploring Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii. If you have time (and budget), you can take the one-hour train from Naples to the Amalfi Coast for a day or overnight trip.

The train between Naples and Rome is around 1.5 hours, so if you start your journey early in the morning, you can have some extra time in Rome, Italy’s capital city, and one of the most visited places in the country.

From there, you can travel to Florence. There are a few different trains between Rome and Florence; either fast or slow, so be sure to check beforehand. The fast train takes just under 1.5 hours, whereas the slow train takes over three hours.

Finally, you’ll end your interrailing trip to Bologna. From Florence, the train to Bologna should take under 90 minutes. Either fly home from Bologna Airport, or book onward train travel from there.

➡ Don’t forget to pre-book your accommodation! You can check out the best hostels in Italy here.

🎫 I recommend to get a city pass to save up to 50% on entry tickets and activities in Rome.

Interrailing Italy: Route 2

🇮🇹 Duration: Three weeks

🚇 Six locations in Italy : Naples – Rome – Florence – Milan – Verona – Venice

Interrailing Italy for three weeks is an ideal amount of time. From the famous Italian cities to the Italian coast and beaches of Sorrento, this is my favourite interrailing Italy route.

For this interrailing route, start in Naples. Again, this is a great starting point, as you can take a day trip to the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento or Positano . Similar to route one, you can then continue on to Rome, and Florence; where you can take a day trip to the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

From Florence, it’s a four-hour train to Milan, one of Italy’s biggest cities. If you’d still like to see more of Italy, you can head west to Verona, a romantic, colourful city along the Adige River.

Finally, your interrailing trip will end in Venice. A must-see place in Italy for all first-timers, you can get lost amongst the maze of cobbled streets and iconic canals. Fly home from Venice, or book onward travel to your next location.

⭐ Top-rated experiences in Venice

  • Explore the highlights of the city
  • Visit Doge’s Palace
  • Experience a gondola ride along the most beautiful part of the Grand Canal

Interrailing Italy: Route 3

🇮🇹 Duration: Four weeks

🚇 Eight locations in Italy : Naples – Rome – Florence – Bologna – Milan – Verona – Venice – Turin

For the final interrailing route, you will need at least four weeks. This busy plan visits at least eight locations in Italy, and if you want to take a day or overnight trip to the Amalfi Coast, Lake Como, Cinque Terre or Sorrento, you may end up visiting over ten Italian locations during your visit!

Start your interrailing Italy trip in Naples. Here you can visit Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast and some of the other surrounding villages. Next, take the 1.5-hour train to Rome , and spend a few days enjoying the famous landmarks in the capital city.

From Rome, head to Florence and Bologna, both only a few hour’s train away. From Bologna, your next stop is Milan, which can be visited for a few days as a city break, or even extended to add in a few days at Lake Como.

Finally, finish by visiting the canals of Venice, and onwards to Turin, one of the prettiest cities in Northern Italy.

Interrailing Italy

Night trains whilst interrailing Italy

Whilst interrailing Italy, there may be times you need to take the night train. The Intercity Notte is the main night train, and it runs every night. It’s included in the interrailing pass , but you need to book a seat in advance. Don’t forget to reserve a bed, which will be an additional 40 EUR. However, you won’t need to book a night’s accommodation, so this may save you money.

🚇 The main Italy night train route is: Milan – Genova – Pisa – Livorno – Salerno – Catania.

And of course, don’t forget to try some of the city’s renowned gelato – there are said to be over 500 flavours to choose from! – or enjoy a traditional Florentine steak (if you’re not a veggie like me).

If you’re interrailing and staying in Florence, the best hostels include Ostello Del Bigallo, Leonardo House, Yellow Square Florence and Ostello Bello Firenze . You can find out more and book your stay here!

Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is one of the most beautiful places in Italy, and it’s a perfect interrailing stop or day trip. The views are incredible, and there are plenty of things to do. There are direct trains from Genoa, La Spezia, and Pisa, or you can take a regional train from Milan and Florence.

There are lots of things to do in Cinque Terre , from hiking, swimming, kayaking, and just relaxing on the beach. There are also plenty of restaurants and bars, so you can try some of the local food and wine. If you’re on a budget, buy some cheap food at the supermarket and take it to the beach for a picnic!

There are a few hostels to choose from in Cinque Terre, with the best being either Hostel Ospitalia del Mare, Ostello Corniglia and Vanna . But you can read the reviews and find out more about the Cinque Terre hostels here!

The last Italian highlight I want to mention is Verona. Accessed easily from Milan, it’s one of my favourite places in Italy. It’s known for its Roman arena, the Verona Arena, built in the 1st century A.D. and capable of holding 22,000 spectators! It’s now often used for live music and theatre events.

It’s also associated with William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet; as legend has it that the lovers were based on two real-life young people whose graves lie side by side in a local churchyard. If you’re a Shakespeare fan, you can visit Juliet’s House, which is said to be where Shakespeare’s fictional character lived.

If you’re interrailing and staying in Verona, some of the best hostels are The Hostello, Gabanel Bike, Arena B&B and Locazione Turistica Cittadella . Check out all of the hostels in Verona here.

4) How do I book tickets to interrail Italy?

Once you’ve bought your interrailing pass and have a destination plan, you can book your seat reservations. Your interrail pass is activated when you reach the first location that isn’t your home country/city.

Have a look at Interrail’s train timetable to find times and destinations. Most trains will require a seat reservation (especially high-speed and sleeper trains). Slower train seat reservations are usually cheaper, or in some cases, free. You can also book your seat on italiarail.com , where you can avoid interrail fees.

5) What tours should I do in Italy?

Looking to book a tour whilst interrailing Italy? Tours are one of the best ways to see the hidden gems of the country you are visiting. If you’re travelling during peak season, I highly recommend pre-booking your tours to ensure you don’t miss out!

When travelling, we use this company to book our tours . Tours include skip-the-line tickets to the world’s most iconic attractions, walking tours by top local experts, immersive food and beverage tours, cooking and craft classes, bucket list experiences, and niche offerings you won’t find anywhere else!  ➡ You can check out available tours in the Italy with prices here!

6) Do I need a SIM card to visit Italy?

If you’re not from Italy, it’s worth downloading an eSIM on your phone to ensure you can use it for directions and avoid roaming charges as soon as you arrive.

ESIMs are easy to download and ready to use within a few minutes of purchasing! Plus, there are eSIMs available for the entire continent of Europe, so there’s no longer a need to hunt down free Wifi! ➡ You can check out the prices and packages for eSIMs here!

About the company.

Why travel with great rail journeys?

Great Rail Journeys is the UK's leading operator of holidays by rail. There is no-one who understands rail holidays like we do - and no other company offers a better choice of escorted holidays by rail anywhere else in the world.

We pride ourselves on providing you with a truly first class holiday experience, in every aspect of our tours:

The Best Rail Travel

We have been organising outstanding tours for more than 30 years. In that time, we have built on our detailed understanding of both UK and international networks, and are true rail experts. We ensure that we travel on the most convenient trains and (where applicable) the most comfortable sleeper trains.

On most of our holidays, rail journeys are made in the highest class available on the train - and this is included in the price of the holiday, rather than being offered as an upgrade option with more to pay. On the Eurostar we generally travel in Standard Premier Class, the first class option for leisure travellers, with a light meal, alcoholic drinks and tea/coffee served on board. On most holidays we continue in First Class on inter-city routes across Europe all the way to your destination.

Our New Departure Office At St Pancras International

Traveling on one of our European tours? To make sure your holiday gets off to a relaxing and stress-free start, we now have our own special dedicated departure office at St Pancras International station. From the very beginning, your Tour Manager will be there waiting to greet you. Then it's just a short step to your train and the start of your wonderful holiday experience.

Brilliant Hotels

In our three decades of experience, we have carefully selected our hotels based on their individual style, warm welcome and excellent service - ensuring that they meet the high standards our customers have come to expect. We have worked closely with several of our hoteliers for a number of years, and many of the hotels we use have become firm favourites with Great Rail Journeys' customers in that time; we use them year after year because our customers tell us how much they enjoyed their stay.

We know how important it is to stay in a hotel within easy reach of the attractions, and so our hotels are generally ideally located for the station and the places of interest. Each hotel boasts comfortable beds, spacious bathrooms and plenty of storage, whilst minibars, hairdryers, in-room safes and telephones are a feature in almost every hotel on our programme. The star rating of each hotel varies between 3 and 5 stars; we look for our hotels to have the perfect mix of excellent facilities, a great location, and which offer fantastic value for money to our customers.

We include many meals on our tours. These are served in the hotel - or sometimes in a popular local restaurant. As we dine together, meal times are often the most sociable times of the day. Included meals are clearly shown on each tour page.

Fantastic Excursions

Also included in the price of your holiday is the exciting programme of excursions listed in the itinerary. Our excursions have been meticulously planned, and have been carefully refined and tweaked over the years, to give you a wonderful balance of cultural, historical and social experiences of the regions you visit.

On most of our excursions, in addition to your Tour Manager, you will be accompanied by a local guide - enabling you to get a true insight into the area. In some cases, we include excursions to off-the-beaten-track destinations that simply would not be stumbled upon without this local knowledge.

I am also looking for customer reviews for Great Rail Journeys, the UK company. Has anyone been on them? What are they like? Good? Bad?

' class=

I have not been on a 'Great Rail Journeys ' holiday but as something of a regular European rail traveller I read the small print of their adverts with some interest.

Do they use the Eurostar service ? apparently not

Do they use a specially chartered train ? apparently not

Do they use named 4/5 * hotels ? apparently not

Do they include all meals ? apparently not

Is all porterage of luggage included ? apparently not

My conclusion is that the £1500 aprox' price verges on the extortionate.

Remember the Alpine scenic trains such as the 'Glacia' and the 'Panoramic' are available to all from any ticket office.

I will admit the cost in good hotels could be 1K for 9 days but I would love to do it.

' class=

Most of the hotels we stayed in were fine. Luggage was transported where necessary (ie anywhere where there was anything other than a very short walk), the travel was first class, the tour manager was excellent. We met people who'd been with them before the change in ownership, and they said how different things now were. We met no-one who would repeat the experience, although the company told us they had a 50% repeat booking figure.

They appear to have a huge advertising budget (front page adverts in the Telegraph, many in the Mail on Sunday and Sunday Times). It may perhaps be better to spend some of that on the food budget so that people recommend them to others. They will certainly get no free advertising from us.
