How to Tour Hollywood's Best Sights in One Day

hollywood california tour

Betsy Malloy Photography

If you want to explore every nook and cranny of Hollywood , it would take you several days - but if you've only got one day, you can still enjoy the best of what it has to offer. Here's how to navigate the most interesting and enjoyable parts of Tinseltown, while avoiding the gaudy, mundane and just plain cheesy parts.

Charge up your camera, put on your walking shoes and gas up the car. You've got a lot of ground to cover and not much time to do it.

How to Spend Your Day in Hollywood, California

If you get up fairly early and don't dawdle, you can see all of these sights in a day.

  • Take a Real Studio Tour: If you're looking for a theme park with thrill rides, go to Universal Studios , but if you want an authentic, behind-the-scenes tour that shows you how movies are made, take a tour at one of the other studios instead. The tours take about two hours and some studios are closed on the weekend.
  • Farmers Market : It's not quite in Hollywood proper, but the Farmers Market is close by and a great place to get an inexpensive meal. Early risers can start their day by eating breakfast here. If you're off to a slow start, go in the early evening and enjoy a meal at one of their award-winning food stands.
  • See the Hollywood Sign : You can see the Hollywood Sign from many places around Los Angeles, but a quick drive up Mulholland Drive or above the Hollywood Reservoir will reward you with a glimpse of living in the Hollywood Hills and some great city views, too. Allow about an hour for the round trip drive.
  • Hollywood Bowl : If your day can extend into the night , this summer concert series is one of the best outdoor music experiences anywhere.
  • Hollywood Boulevard : This is where you'll find the Hollywood Walk of Fame (sidewalk stars) and Grauman's Chinese Theater (stars' hand- and footprints), as well as the Hollywood and Highland complex, the Dolby Theatre and lots of fun Hollywood kitsch. Allow two to four hours to see it all, and while it's the one don't-miss attraction in Hollywood, go in the late afternoon and stay into the early evening if you can.

What You Won't See in Hollywood, California, and Why

Even though Hollywood is a small portion of the larger Los Angeles area, you still can't see it all in a day. These are some of the popular activities that aren't included in your one-day experience:

  • Sunset Strip: This section of Sunset Boulevard has a big reputation, but there's not that much to see unless you want to go to the clubs at night.
  • Stars' Home Tour : We say skip it. Few of today's stars actually live in Hollywood, and much of what the guides tell you is made up or just plain wrong. There are better ways to spend your time.
  • Forest Lawn or Hollywood Forever Cemetery : Unless you're a fan of old Hollywood and want to pay tribute to the stars of yesteryear, these places won't hold much interest for you.
  • Universal Studios : It would take you a whole day just for Universal, and while it's a fun theme park, its studio tour is cursory and scripted.

Getting to Hollywood, California

Hollywood isn't a city, it's a Los Angeles neighborhood . The easiest way to get to Hollywood is to take US Hwy 101 (north from downtown) and exit at Highland Avenue. If you're coming from the south or west, enter 6801 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles CA into your GPS system, which will take you the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue - or locate that same spot on your Los Angeles map and navigate yourself there.

24 Hollywood tourist attractions you shouldn’t miss

Hollywood attractions can be overwhelming (and often disappointing), so stick to these iconic L.A. movie theaters, hotels, restaurants and landmarks

Michael Juliano

Hollywood boasts an international reputation like no other neighborhood in Los Angeles. But ask your average Angeleno what they think of it and you’ll likely be met with groans. Yes, it’s busy, touristy and often in disrepair. But parts of Hollywood still sparkle with gems of old glamorous hotels and celebrity hangouts along with an emerging urban cityscape and working production scene. Follow our guide to what to see in Hollywood and tour the iconic movie town’s must-visit attractions along with a few stops away from the crowds on the Walk of Fame and Sunset Boulevard .

Hollywood Bowl

Hollywood Bowl

  • Things to do
  • Event spaces
  • price 2 of 4

This gorgeous outdoor amphitheatre has been hosting concerts since the LA Philharmonic first played here in 1922. Nestled in an aesthetically blessed fold in the Hollywood Hills, the 18,000-seat venue can bring out the romantic in the terminally cynical. It’s the summer home of the LA Phil (and boozy picnics); as long as there’s no performance, it also doubles as a public park .

Madame Tussauds Hollywood

Madame Tussauds Hollywood

  • Arcades and amusements

There are easier ways to meet your favorite stars than stalking their homes, or trying to sneak your way into the VIP areas at expensive clubs. Simply head to Madame Tussauds Hollywood and hang out with the likes of Brad Pitt, Harry Styles, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga and Marilyn Monroe. And the best bit? They’ll stay still for all your snaps. Nobody will ever know...

Chinese Theatre

Chinese Theatre

  • Movie theaters

The forecourt of this iconic movie theater, filled with foot and hand prints of Hollywood icons, is kind of a tourist-choked hot mess. Most people flock here to measure their own extremities against the likes of John Wayne and Judy Garland. But past that, it’s an entirely different story. You can avoid the crowds by catching a flick inside, where the auditorium is as stunning as the IMAX screen’s laser projection quality (perhaps the best in town ).

Take a Hollywood and Beverly Hills minibus tour.

The Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood Sign

  • Sightseeing

Originally created in 1923, the then “Hollywoodland” sign was supposed to be up for only a year and a half, yet here it is a century later . Getting close to the Hollywood Sign, though, is an often contentious issue thanks to pressure from local homeowners. You can catch a dead-on glimpse of the sign on Beachwood Drive, or farther up the hill near Lake Hollywood Park . Looking to get even closer? Go horseback riding at Sunset Ranch or—of you’re alright with a view from behind—lace up for a trek along the otherwise off limits road on Mt. Lee Drive to where you will be standing directly above the Hollywood Sign and can experience a total 360-degree view of the cityscape.

Hollywood Roosevelt

Hollywood Roosevelt

  • price 3 of 4

This 1927 landmark, a beautiful example of Spanish colonial design, once welcomed the A-listers who frequented it during Hollywood’s heyday. It’s worth walking into the Hollywood Roosevelt just to explore its dramatic downstairs lobby—or to bowl a few frames inside swanky bar the Spare Room .

Hollywood Walk of Fame

Hollywood Walk of Fame

If you can stomach the suspect superheroes, claustrophobia-inducing crowds and never-ending line of gift shops, tattoo parlors and lingerie stores, there’s actually a fair amount of old Hollywood history and glamour to discover along the Walk of Fame. The immortalized names on those famous five-pointed terrazzo and brass stars run from the Walk’s western extreme at the Hollywood and La Brea Gateway to the W Hotel and Pantages Theater at Gower, and additionally on Vine from the Capitol Records Building down to Sunset, near where the original movie studios sprang up a century ago. For a Hollywood Boulevard Walking Tour, click here .

Runyon Canyon

Runyon Canyon

  • Parks and gardens

This 160-acre park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains has one main loop, plus a bevy of dirt hiking trails. The sea of buff trainers and their sleek, sweaty clients can get to be too much during the busy morning and weekend workout traffic, but you’ll be rewarded with some of the best views of the city (and, if you’re lucky, a chance to gawk at power-walking celebs). The southern entrance is at the end of Fuller Avenue in Hollywood; the northern entrance is off the 7300 block of Mulholland Drive.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Any cemetery that houses the remains of such celluloid luminaries as Cecil B. DeMille, Jayne Mansfield, Rudolph Valentino and Mel Blanc was bound to become a tourist attraction. Aside from popular posthumous celebs, Hollywood Forever is also home to Cinespia’s summer outdoor movie screenings, an annual Day of the Dead festival and concerts, both outside on the lawn and inside the property’s Masonic lodge.

Visit famous Hollywood sites on a bike tour.

Ovation Hollywood

Ovation Hollywood

  • price 1 of 4

Known as Hollywood & Highland when it first opened, this shopping center helped usher in a commercial renaissance along Hollywood Boulevard—well, for a while, at least. Like many American shopping malls, it eventually became a shell of its former self, but a recent makeover  that’s renamed the complex Ovation seeks to add a bit of sparkle back to the block. The parking entrances are on Highland Avenue and Orange Drive.

Dolby Theatre

Dolby Theatre

First known as the Kodak until its sponsorship swapped to Dolby in 2012, this 3,400-seat theater routinely hosts Broadway plays, high-profile screenings and the occasional concert. But the main attraction here, of course, is the Academy Awards: The annual star-studded broadcast will continue to be hosted here for the forseeable future, and all of the past Best Picture winners line the columns near the entrance.

58 Fun Things to Do in Hollywood, California

things to do in Hollywood, California

A world-famous playground for the elite, a beacon for all things cinema and entertainment, and a tourist Mecca for decades now, Hollywood is perhaps the most exciting place to visit in California.

If you’re after nightlife, the Sunset Strip has got you covered. If it’s more family-friendly fun on the menu, Universal Studios and the La Brea Tar Pits won’t disappoint. Craving some hiking and nature? Look no further than Griffith Park! And if you’re on a mission to satisfy the inner cinephile, then the array of studio backlot exhibits, movie-themed museums, and in-the-know tours will scratch that itch.

Looking for some adventurous fun? Check out iFly for some seriously fun indoor skydiving, or take it outdoors on a hike up to the Hollywood Hills.

Tinseltown is never shy of activities, especially along Hollywood Boulevard, so if you need a hand deciding what to see first, you’ve come to the right place. With so many diverse things to do in Hollywood, you’ve got to start somewhere, right?

Let’s give the spotlight to the city of stars, as we explore the best things to do in Hollywood !

  • Hollywood tours

1 – Party it up on the Sunset Strip

Hollywood Sunset Strip

The heart of the Hollywood nightlife and glamour, the world-famous Sunset Strip is a celebrity magnet thanks to its daring comedy clubs, career-defining theaters, and swanky bars.

Kickstart the evening with dinner at Saddle Ranch Chop House, Boa Steakhouse, Lavo, or Warrior, and then after a hand-crafted cockatiel or two make your way to any of the world-famous venues in Hollywood West: from the Comedy Store to the Viper Room, Roxy Theatre, or Whisky A Go Go nightclub, known for its live rock bands, the odds of a great night out are sky-high.

With hundreds of A-listers and up-and-comers gracing the stages of these venues night after night, you might even come across the next big thing.

Even if you prefer to steer clear of the partying and simply get a taste of LA’s most famous strip, most bus tours will drive down Sunset en route to Beverly Hills.

2 – Take a hike through Griffith Park

Griffith Park, Hollywood

Home of the iconic Hollywood sign, an abundance of hiding trails that offer killer views of the LA basin, an observatory, kid-friendly zoo, and the Autry Museum of the American West, the sprawling Griffith park sells itself as a splendid place for an alfresco family day out.

Little known to tourists, yet a worthy attraction in their own right, are the Bronson Caves, a man-made tunnel that’s been featured as the backdrop for countless Western and Sci-Fi flicks. Join a walking tour and explore all this amazing park has to offer.

Hot tip: If you’re in Hollywood on the fourth of July, be sure to catch the spectacular Fireworks display over Los Angeles from here.

  • Griffith Park tours

3 – Tick Universal Studios Hollywood off the bucket list

Universal Studios Hollywood

For sheer fun and entertainment, Universal Studios is one of the best things to do in Hollywood — it’s all the fun, thrills whimsy, and magic (read: looking at you, Wizarding World of Harry Potter) of Disney without the hassle of a 90-minute drive down to Anaheim!

Universal Studio’s main draws are film and TV-themed rides like Jurassic Park: The Ride, King Kong, The Simpsons, and Revenge of the Mummy — but you’ll also find several live shows, special effects demonstrations, and an abundance of dining options.

For the main event, it’s hard to go past the classic Backlot Studio tour — an insightful trolly tour that dives into the secrets of movie production, from stunts and special effects to iconic sets like Whoville and the Psycho House.

  • Universal Studios Hollywood tickets

4 – Soak in the atmosphere of Universal CityWalk Hollywood

Universal CityWalk Hollywood

The free, smaller sister to Universal Studios, Citywalk draws in crowds before and after visiting the theme park, thanks to its slew of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

While the main focus is on dining options (including some famous names like Bubba Gump, Voodoo Doughnuts, and the irresistible Antojitos Mexican joint) there are also loads of unique stores you won’t find anywhere else in town — including the Universal Studios Store, full of souvenirs.

Looking for something a little more adventurous? Try your hand at the iFly indoor skydiving center, or see if any action flicks are playing at the Universal Cinema.

5 – Keep your eyes peeled on a celebrity homes tour

celebrity homes tour, Los Angeles

A cliche activity aimed at tourists yet still one of the essential things to do in Hollywood despite its cheesiness, a celeb-spotting tour zips around all the A-list-frequented spots in Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, and Holmby Hills, with stops at the likes of Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s abode, Adele’s stomping ground, and Hugh Hefner’s infamous Playboy Mansion.

Even if you don’t see a movie star or two out for a walk, the enormous houses and iconic landmarks you’ll pass along the way are reason enough to give it a go.

For the best bang for your buck, book the open-aired tour ahead of time — the peddlers on Hollywood Boulevard often jack up the price.

6 – Stroll along the Hollywood Walk of Fame

With millions of tourists passing through Hollywood and Los Angeles year after year, the city has created an easy, affordable way for visitors to see all the main attractions and get the most out of their trip: the Go Los Angeles Pass .

The Pass provides access to more than 30 top-rated attractions in the city, all for one low price, and can be customized to suit the duration of your trip. Best of all, it even includes a weekday visit to Universal Studios Hollywood!

Where to go next?

Checking out where to head next? Consider visiting Los Angeles , only a 24-minute drive away, where you can indulge in some of the most stunning views of the city, the Hollywood Hills, and beyond at the Griffith Observatory, get lost exploring Little Tokyo, and all its cultural hidden gems, or go beach hopping from Santa Monica beach to Venice Beach.

Fancy taking it further? Explore the different day trips from Los Angeles that are totally worth the trip! From exploring all the things to do in San Diego , Santa Barbara , Ventura Beach, Laguna Beach, or up north to San Francisco – there are tons of other beachside cities worth venturing into.

Long Beach is another wonderful city to check out only 1 hour south of Hollywood, where you can take in the scenic vibes at Shoreline Village, or venture into the supposedly haunted Queen Mary ship for a drink.

Final thoughts

From the spectacular tours bringing you closer to your favorite celebrities, getting a behind-the-scenes look at your favorite movies and shows at Universal Studios, and the incredible beaches, and social ambiances at the best rooftop bars – we hope our list of the best things to do in Hollywood has got you in the travel planning state of mind!

Happy travels!
