‘Star Trek: Klingons’ One-Shot Review: Remembering Kahless the Unforgettable

kahless star trek

Review: Star Trek: Klingons

After a duel between him and his brother ends in tragedy, a young hermit calling himself Kahless sets out on a journey that will mark the birth of a prophet for the Klingons and equip their civilization with a powerful purpose. The writing team of Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly along with artist Timothy Green II combine breathtaking vistas, thunderous dialog, and brutal action to craft a comic epic worthy of the legend of Kahless.

STAR TREK: KLINGONS Regular Cover by Timothy Green II

Things have been mostly quiet on the Star Trek comics front but it’s about to get very busy. Mirror War has just crossed its midpoint with four issues, more Star Trek: Discovery comics are on the way , and the Klingons one-shot has arrived, the first in a series of comics about different alien civilizations in the Trek universe. Veteran editor Heather Antos whose resume includes nearly a decade of curating comics in publishing houses like Marvel and Valiant joined IDW in April as Senior Editor and later took over the reins of the Star Trek imprint. Between three series and teases on social media about more Trek comics coming, it’s clear she’s bringing her ambitious vision that brought about the relaunch of the highly influential Star Wars comics back in 2015 to Star Trek. There’s no such thing in my book as too many Trek comics (or any comics for that matter) but if everything that’s coming our way is as enjoyable as this one-shot, I predict that a glorious season of reading picture books awaits us!

Catch me up, Scotty

Spoilers for the STAR TREK: KLINGONS comic follow. The tale begins at the foot of the Kri’stak mountain on Qo’nos so long ago in Klingon history that its history and myth are touching each other. Kahless has just taken his brother Morath’s life with a blade freshly forged from Kri’stak’s holy flames. A mysterious revelation gifted unto him during the making of this blade has compelled Kahless to end his family’s existence as a hermit atop this mountain. Morath and this previous life are small, necessary byproducts needed to ensure the success of the colossal task that the blade has placed on him. Armed with it on his back, Kahless sets off on a path to unite the Klingon tribes and bless them with a message that will reverberate across time and space for millennia to come.

The Writing

Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly ended their landmark comic series Star Trek: Year Five with #25 in October. The duo moved on to big comic ventures in DC and Marvel and just when I thought Star Trek comics were in their rearview, they announced much to my delight that they’re returning for this one-shot. Lanzing-Kelly, like veteran writers David Tipton, Scott Tipton, and Mike Johnson, proved with Year Five that they possess a deep, polished understanding of the Star Trek storytelling style. Whether we only get them for a comic here and there or they come back with another maxiseries, any Star Trek comic that bears their name is an automatic addition to my pull.

kahless star trek

Lanzing-Kelly paints a fascinating portrait of Kahless. He’s part Moses, part Man With No Name, part Tony Soprano. The duo is captivated with alien cultures in Star Trek and continues to make us take off our rose-colored visors to examine key moments in their past. Writer Brandon Easton drew from a similar concept well in Year Five 21 when Spock is pulled back in time and learns that Surak is violent and vengeful, the opposite of what his teachings make him out to be. Lanzing and Kelly take this to the next level in Klingons by taking the Starfleet shackles off. Everything you imagined the Klingon past to be when Worf speaks of it is presented here in its terrifying, blood-soaked glory. In that respect it’s probably not the best comic for an eight-year-old or a Trekkie who’s not a fan of graphic violence, to read.

kahless star trek

Timothy Green II is a veteran artist whose earliest work goes all the way back to 1996. I was surprised to find that his wide range of comic art didn’t include a Star Trek comic because he draws Klingons really well. His Qo’noS landscapes are vast and look lived in. They are inspired by spaghetti westerns and movies like 300 while his action exhibits the quiet, almost meditative spirit of samurai manga. Artists like him are strong counterarguments to people who say Star Trek action is not its strong suit. His art here shows that with the right story and when done by the right artist, it can be incredibly strong, perhaps its strongest suit. Green also draws Klingon features particularly well and adds just enough subtlety to distinguish their faces and body shapes when we see them in close-ups. Colorist DC Alonso complements Green’s pencils well with a palette full of bright red and orange shades, giving Qo’noS a visual identity that stays with you long after you put the comic away. I really hope this isn’t the last Klingon-centric comic painted by Green and Alonso.

What’s The Verdict, Q?

STAR TREK: KLINGONS is an excellent comic. While its unapologetic portrayal of Klingon culture might not be for every Trekkie, the thought-provoking narrative about a mythological Star Trek figure adds a humanizing, sympathetic layer to our favorite Bat’leth wielders.

'Star Trek: Klingons' will reveal the legend of Kahless in new IDW comic

Break out your Bat'leth for February's new Klingon-centric special issue.

Kahless the Unforgettable will star in his own one-shot in Star Trek: Klingons launching in February 2022 from IDW Publishing.

Since their introduction in "Star Trek: The Original Series" in 1967 during the first season's "Errand of Mercy" episode, the barbaric warmongering alien species known as the Klingons have been one of sci-fi's greatest foes of the Federation.

Created by screenwriter Gene L. Coon, legend has it that the purple-blooded antagonists were named after Lieutenant Wilbur Clingan, an officer who served alongside " Star Trek " creator Gene Roddenberry in the Los Angeles Police Department.

Now after hundreds of appearances in "Star Trek" TV shows, animated series, commercials, books, comics and Hollywood feature films, Klingons have emerged as an internationally known race whose imposing stature is matched only by their inherent hostility. You can get caught up on your Klingon lore with our Star Trek streaming guide to see Trek TV shows and films. Related: The 15 Most Bizarre Alien Species Featured in 'Star Trek'

To honor the Klingon legacy, IDW Publishing is adding to their vast lineup of "Star Trek" comics and graphic novels with a special, oversized one-shot in February aptly titled " Star Trek: Klingons ." It's all part of IDW's new expanded Trek offerings focused on the origins of the franchise’s diversity of alien entities.

"There is no 'Star Trek' without the vast population of alien species calling the universe home," said editor Heather Antos in an IDW press release . "From Klingons to Ferengi, Vulcans to Trill and beyond, it's so exciting to delve deep into what makes each of the species a unique addition to the world of Trek, Mirrorverse, or otherwise!"

Here in this extra-long issue the topic is the rise of the feared warrior king, Kahless The Unforgettable. Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly ("Star Trek: Year Five") with art via  fan-favorite Timothy Green II ("Starlord," "Annihilators," "Animal Man"), "Star Trek: Klingons" chronicles the life of the most formidable fighter in the Klingon Empire, from the death of his cowardly brother Morath to his triumphant campaign at Three Turn Bridge.

"I was, in large part, raised by “Star Trek” and no culture helped me come to terms with my masculinity, my anger, and my personal code of honor more than the Klingons," Lanzing said in the same press release . "So when I tell you the only thing more exciting to me than taking the Enterprise crew on their final journey in 'Star Trek: Year Five' is getting to show the man behind the myth of Kahless The Unforgettable, you can believe it."

According to Lanzing's longtime creative partner, Collin Kelly, the Klingon people provide a rich counterpoint to the Federation.

"They present a lifestyle that is loud and fearless, but also incredibly egalitarian and fair; no matter who you are, respect is earned, not given," Kelly said in the IDW statement . "We've been pitching this story since before we'd ever been hired to write 'Star Trek.' We never in a million years thought it would be a story we actually got to bring to life. And with an artist of the caliber of Timothy Green II — whose detailed, beautiful work owes so much to the greats of Japanese tradition — this will be a saga worthy of Kahless."

" Star Trek: Klingons " will arrive on Feb. 23 with cover variants including Cover A by interior artist Timothy Green II and a Retailer Incentive edition by Alexandra Beguez.

The next entry in IDW's new prestige-format series will be "Star Trek: Ferengi" in April, starring the Milky Way's most calculating and greedy aliens.

IDW Launching New Alien Spotlight Series, Starting With ‘Star Trek: Klingons’ Telling The Legend Of Kahless

kahless star trek

| November 17, 2021 | By: Joe Andosca 4 comments so far

Last month IDW wrapped up their Star Trek: Year Five series and the lead writers behind that are moving on to take a deep dive into the lore of Star Trek’s most iconic aliens, starting off with a one-shot focusing on Kahless.

Star Trek: Klingons coming in February

Today IDW Publishing announced the release of Star Trek: Klingons for February, which will be the first in a series of extra-long one-shots spotlighting the franchise’s many memorable alien species. Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, two of the lead story architects on the Star Trek: Year Five series, join artist Timothy Green II ( Starlord , Annihilators , and Animal Man ) to tell the legend of Kahless the Unforgettable. The story of the legendary Klingon warrior and founder of the Klingon Empire will be told: “from the death of his coward brother Morath to his victory at Three Turn Bridge.”

“I was, in large part, raised by Star Trek… and no culture helped me come to terms with my masculinity, my anger, and my personal code of honor more than the Klingons,” says Lanzing. “So when I tell you the only thing more exciting to me than taking the Enterprise crew on their final journey in Star Trek: Year Five is getting to show the man behind the myth of Kahless The Unforgettable, you can believe it.”

“The Klingon people provide a rich counterpoint to the Federation. They present a lifestyle that is loud and fearless, but also incredibly egalitarian and fair; no matter who you are, respect is earned, not given,” says Kelly. “We’ve been pitching this story since before we’d ever been hired to write Star Trek. We never in a million years thought it would be a story we actually got to bring to life. And with an artist of the caliber of Timothy Green II — whose detailed, beautiful work owes so much to the greats of Japanese tradition — this will be a saga worthy of Kahless.”

Star Trek: Klingons will be available with two cover variants, including Cover A by interior artist Timothy Green II and a Retailer Incentive edition by Alexandra Beguez.

More Star Trek alien spotlights to come, starting with Ferengi in April

IDW will continue its series touring prominent Star Trek species starting with Star Trek: Ferengi in April, featuring “the Milky Way’s most cunning and avaricious aliens.”

“There is no Star Trek without the vast population of alien species calling the universe home,” says editor Heather Antos. “From Klingons to Ferengi, Vulcans to Trill and beyond, it’s so exciting to delve deep into what makes each of the species a unique addition to the world of Trek, Mirrorverse, or otherwise!”

IDW returning to Trek aliens

While not directly related to this new series, between 2007 and 2009 IDW published two volumes of Star Trek: Alien Spotlight, with a total of 11 issues, each covering a different alien species.

First Look At Brent Spiner’s Return To ‘Night Court’

I really enjoyed the previous incarnation of the Alien Spotlight series, and I look forward to this one.

Glad they’re doing the proper Klingon look

Excellent news! the alien spotlight stories have been great in the past

This story would have made a fantastic TV show too. But it’s nice that someone is tackling it anyway. It’ll be interesting to see if the storyline follows the conventional/traditional Klingon version of Kahless’s life or if they go in a somewhat different direction — the reality deviating from the myths at some points, but Kahless still turning out to be a genuinely great man (even greater than the myths, perhaps).

The Legend: Kahless the Unforgettable [ ]

Within the bloody stained pages of Klingon history, there exist the deeds of great heroes with the greatest of them all being the story of Kahless the Unforgettable who forged the Klingon Empire sometime during Earth's 8th century . ( VOY episode : " Day of Honor ") One of the stories of the great warrior came about when his brother Morath told a lie. Kahless was determined to teach his brother a lesson for he had dishonored and shamed the family name for his act. Instead of fighting, Morath would flee across the valleys and the mountains to the edge of the sea, but Kahless pursued him tirelessly. At the shore, Kahless and his brother fought for twelve days and twelve nights until he repented of his crime. ( TNG episodes : " New Ground ", " Firstborn ")

At some point, Morath betrayed his family by slaying his father. Kahless held his father's lifeless body in his arms and could not believe what his brother had done. Morath would take his father's sword and throw it into the sea as he believed that if he could not possess it then neither would Kahless. This would be the last time the two brothers would speak. Kahless would then look into the ocean where he wept for the sword and his father with the sea filling with nothing but his tears that flooded the shore. His people would beg him to stop, and Kahless did only to walk into the water in order to find the lost sword. He would search the murky depths of the ocean where he held his breath for three days and three nights until he eventually found his father's sword.

In this early history, Kahless was known to have visited the underworld in order to search for his father. At this point, he had invented a combat form known as Mok'bara . Teaching him this art, Kahless helped his father remember his body and returned to the land of the living. ( TNG episode : " Birthright, Part II ") One of Kahless' noted accomplishments was single-handedly fighting off an entire army at the Three Turn Bridge . ( DS9 episode : " Let He Who Is Without Sin... ") It was also said that he made use of an archaic three pronged bladed weapon that became the trefoil symbol of his House . ( TOS video game : Klingon Academy )

In such times, the leaders of the Klingon people served without honor who were cold blooded individuals that crushed their people's warrior spirit and the worst of these tyrants being Molor, son of Marqagh. For nearly two decades Molor lived a high life while his subjects lived in languish with any dissenters who lost their lives. None were capable of standing against this cruel ruler that held an iron fist around the Klingon people. From this tyranny came a brave warrior that was Kahless who pledged that he would not stand the tyrants injustice anymore and would rather die than live under Molor's rule. ( TNG episode : " Firstborn ") He promised a brand new glorious empire which was rooted in the principles of honor. He attracted a great many warriors, including the leaders of the Hand of Flame , three honorable masters each of whom were skilled in a single different but equal form of combat. Kahless would take his newly trained army and march them on to Molor's capital where they were ready for battle in order to gain their freedom. ( TNG video game : Klingon Honor Guard ) Another one of Kahless' companions was a person called Amar who died to help secure the new future for his race. ( VOY novel : Full Circle )

At some point in his travels, Kahless is said to have been cared for by the beggars Krak and Grak . He is also said to have overthrown the powerful House of Bronal . ( ST episode : " Klingon Fable: The Legend of Gorath ")

Among the legends comes the story of when Kahless was condemned to die by the hands of Molor who had been greatly angered by his attempts at inciting a rebellion against him. The night before the scheduled execution, Kahless asked that he be allowed to say his farewells to the moon and the stars as he knew that in Gre'thor he would never see such sights again. Kahless promised that he would come back and for this, Molor granted his last wish as he understood what he meant. The next day, Kahless returned at dawn where he was put to death. ( TNG episode : " Birthright, Part II ") When the Klingon Empire was forming, Kahless took the symbol of his House and bequethed it to the developing Empire as one of his lasting legecies to his people. This became known as the Heart of Virtue and became a prevalent concept within the warrior culture of the Klingon race. ( TOS video game : Klingon Academy )

Another celebrated accomplishment at the dawn of the Klingon Empire was at the Great Hall at Qam-Chee when the city garrison fled before the onslaught from five hundred warriors who stormed the settlement. Only Kahless and the Lady Lukara stood their ground and their actions sparked the greatest romance in Klingon history. ( DS9 episode : " Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places ") The two would eventually be married and were nearly killed by Molor's troops who attempted to slay the two warriors. ( DS9 episode : " You Are Cordially Invited ")

The battle that followed lasted for twenty days and twenty nights with many good warriors losing their lives in that glorious combat. However, the army of Kahless had the advantage by being trained in the arts from the honorable three high masters which resulted in their victory on the twentieth day. In order to survive, Molor fled the city to seek refuge in the nearby mountains. Kahless himself also left the battle where he journeyed to the Kri'stak Volcano where he forged the first Bat'leth from the molten lava with a lock of his hair by plunging it into the summit; the sword of honor . Cooling the metal from the waters of the nearby Lake Lusor , the weapon of the Klingon's people was made. ( TNG episode : " Rightful Heir ", DS9 episode : " The Way of the Warrior ") With this new weapon, Kahless searched the mountains for Molor and the two battled at the highest point of the cliffs that surveyed the plains of Ghol qul . As the battle below continued, Kahless and Molor were locked in mortal combat who fought for the fate of Qo'noS itself. Finally, the battle ended and Kahless emerged the victor. Taking his bat'leth in his hand, Kahless looked towards the sky and unleashed a roar like thunder to Sto-vo-kor to let the Denziens know that a great many brave and honorable Klingon warriors were about to join their ranks. His howl was heard by the two armies below and the fighting stopped as they too took up the death cry. The tyranny of Molor had ended.

After the conflict, Kahless decreed that the honorable three continue to teach their skills to future generations as gratitude for their assistance in the battle against Molor. O'gat , Kollus , and To'Kar swore an oath of loyalty to Kahless and placed their D'k tagh knives on the ground; one by one. The resulting shape embodied strength, duty and sacrifice with Kahless drawing a circle around it which formed the symbol of k'roth ch'kor . This represented honor, the force that united all the Klingon people and became the symbol of the Kingon Empire. ( TNG video game : Klingon Honor Guard )

Using the Sword of Kahless, the great warrior would go about many tasks such as the formation of the First Klingon Empire . He would use it to harvest his father's fields and carve a statue of his beloved, the Lady Lukara . ( DS9 episode : " The Sword of Kahless ") Other famous acts he accomplished included slaying the demonic Fek'lhri and skinning the Serpent of Xol . ( Decipher RPG module : Aliens )

A noted story from long ago tells of a storm that was approaching the city of Quin'lat and where everyone took protection within the city walls except for one man who stood outside. Kahless spoke to him asking him what he was doing to which the man replied,"I am not afraid. I will not hide my face behind stone and mortar. I will stand before the wind and make it respect me." Rather than change the mind of the man, Kahless decided to honor his choice and sought refugee behind the walls. The next day, the storm had passed and the man had been killed to which Kahless stated that the wind does not respect a fool. ( TNG episode : " Rightful Heir ")

In the Eleventh Tome of Klavek , a story is told of Kahless' deed of when he entered into the afterlife in order to rescue his brother Morath from the Barge of the Dead and deliver him to Sto-vo-kor. The legends speak that Kahless would return to the land of the living with wounds that he suffered from in the netherworld. ( VOY episode : " Barge of the Dead ")

Sometime after being declared Emperor of his people, Kahless was involved in a great battle against the traitor Bardak Linron that lasted many days which became known as the Battle of Fom Kerdeth . A truce would be called with the traitors best general, Renarg , approaching the Emperor's tent with a list of demands. As Kahless went out to relieve himself, Renarg ignited explosives strapped to his body which killed a great score of warriors though the Emperor survived and ultimately lost the battle. ( DS9 novel : Vengeance )

The last act of Kahless before he departed for Sto-vo-kor was giving The Story of the Promise where he prophecized to his people that he would one day return. Looking up at the sky, he pointed at a distant star and told his people that he would one day appear at that location. The decades that followed, the Clerics of Boreth would form a monastery at that location waiting for the day that the greatest warrior of the Empire would return. ( TNG episode : " Rightful Heir ")

The Man: Kahless, Son of Kanjis [ ]

The story of Kahless would be far different compared to the legends that the Klingon people speak of. His life began in the Heroic Age in Klingon history where he served as a warchief within the armies of Lord Molor . He would serve his master well and saved him on one occasion against outlaws. This life would forever change during his attempt at collecting 'taxes' from the village of M'iiriah whose inhabitants had no grain or livestock to give. Taking pity, Kahless left the village but Starad , son of Molor, attempted to burn the village down as part of his father's orders. Kahless would stop the young warrior and fight him to the death. Kahless would owe his life to one of his warriors known as Morath for helping him in the battle. Starad's death sealed Kahless' fate as a newly made outlaw.

He and his band of outlaws would travel for many miles until they reached the keep of Lord Vathraq and decided to secretly drink from the river. There they found a group of naked Klingon women who Kahless attempted to calm. He would gain the favor of one of them, Kellein , daughter of Lord Vathraq, who provided refugee to Kahless and his band as well as food for the night. Kahless attempted to explain that his band had no intention of attacking the tyrant Molor, but they did not believe him and Kahless abandoned attempting to explain it. He would journey outside the keep where he was attacked by Kellein and the two had a night of passion where they decided to be mated the next time Kahless returned during the time of the Growing . He would wear a Jinaq amulet till the time would come.

Kahless would continue to evade Molor's army and on one occasion had to escape into the mountains from Molor who led the army himself this time. Morath would lead Kahless and the band to safety through a secret passage through the cold snow covered mountain. They would return to Vathraq's Keep during the Growing but only found the dead to greet them. Molor had sent his army and slaughtered the inhabitants, including Kahless' beloved Kellein.

In grief, Kahless would abandon the band of outlaws and attempted to run from his woes. To him, there was nothing left to live for and he simply wished to join his lover in death. However, this was not to be, for not far behind him was his comrade Morath, who he grappled for six days and six nights. This would continue until Kahless' mount collapsed from exhaustion and Kahless begged Morath to allow him to end his life. Morath refused, stating that Kahless would have to pay with his life. Kahless misunderstood, pointing out that he had been trying to end his life, and Morath clarified that the payment demanded was not a death, but a life; a life dedicated to being the outlaw who would bring Molor down. Kahless finally relented and agreed to the task. Thus, the beginning of the legend would be born.

Kahless' army would grow from other outlaws who would spread his message that he would end Molor's tyranny once and for all. Among those he encountered was Edronh who Kahless met earlier and this time, had lost his son, Rannuf to one of Molor's raids. Kahless would battle another one of Molor's army which was led by the tyrant's other son, Yatron . The two would battle' with Kahless being the victor and robbing Molor another one of his sons but not before being wounded by one of the soldiers of the tyrant's defeated army. Kahless urged his warriors forward to take the initiative after defeating the enemy army's leader before he collapsed from his wounds. He would next face a dream where he entered the afterlife and met Kellein who told him to go to the Kris'tak Volcano with a lock of his hair and forge a sword at Lake Lusor , which would be the legend of the first Bat'leth . Kellein would disappear from the dream, but not before urging Kahless to continue the battle against Molor. The son of Kanjis would next be visited by the recently deceased Rannuf, who told him that his father, Edronh, would betray him, for the old warrior was weary of battle after his son's death and believed that it would end once Kahless was killed.

When Kahless awoke, he was being tended by a healer known as Bandac and surrounded by his closest warriors. He demanded to know where Edronh was, and Morath led him to the place the chief said his warriors would rest. However, when arriving at the region, they found nothing and Kahless' vision had come true. He told some of his warriors to appear as they were sleeping but remained armed while the rest would take hidden positions to engage in a flanking action against Molor's coming army. The attack would be a success and Edronh would be dealt with by Morath. Another victory was achieved by Kahless' army.

At the end of the battle, Kahless would demand a blacksmith be brought to him. He also stated that he wanted a hundred of the slain enemy warriors' swords for the task. Though distorted by the myth that would happen in later years, this was how the first bat'leth would be made. He would equip some of his best warriors with these bladed weapons.

Kahless would next lead his army against the citadel of Molor himself in Qa'yarin . Eventually reaching Molor, Kahless and Morath found him a weak, frail old man. In a bout of pity, Kahless gave Molor a dagger to kill himself with honor, and Molor repaid him by throwing the dagger. It sank into the chest of Morath, who had thrown himself in its path. Morath died, and Kahless slew Molor. The dagger was preserved, and the people came to believe that Kahless' blood stained it. Eventually, it was used to create a clone who was, after all, the clone of the man who was responsible for the Klingons' code of honor.

The Final Reflection : Kahless epetai Riskadh [ ]

Written nearly a decade before Kahless was even mentioned in Star Trek: The Next Generation , the novel The Final Reflection portrayed a much more modern (but equally revered) version of Kahless. In TFR , Kahless lived much more recently, after the Klingons had warp drive and wars with the Romulans . Commanding a fleet in battle with the Romulans, Emperor Kahless became "He Who is Not Forgotten" after his ship was badly damaged and he had his hand strapped to his command chair, so that no one could say he fled it, or that another had commanded his ship at its end. The crew could then be evacuated to other ships, since Kahless had taken on all of the ship's destiny (and died gloriously in battle). Thus the Klingon exclamation "Kahless' hand!"

According to the FASA RPG timeline, Kahless became the first sole Emperor on reference stardate -1/9001 and with the newly-developed warp drive launched an empire in the stars. The first Klingon-Romulan war began on stardate 0/0002.01 , and Kahless died winning the final battle of that war on stardate 0/0306.15 . ( FASA RPG module : The Klingons , 2nd Edition)

The greatest legacy that Kahless bestowed upon his people was the development of the warrior's code of honor , by which all Klingons live their lives. ( Decipher RPG module : Aliens ) Kahless' teachings of honor are believed to be the key that held the Klingon people together and prevented them from falling into self destructive wars such as those experienced by the Pa'uyk . ( TNG novel : Infiltrator ) It was also known that Kahless himself oten used stealth against a superior enemy and it was considered an entirely honorable tactic. ( DS9 novel : The Courageous )

Some stories of Kahless became known to the Federation not long after first contact between the two cultures. However, given the acrimonious relations between the two, the Federation's understanding of this figure remained extremely limited and flawed, until the peacemaking efforts leading up to the Khitomer Conference . During an encounter with the Excalbian Yarnek , who wished to study the human ideas of good and evil, Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock were forced to confront a being presented as, "Kahless the Unforgettable." However, as this Kahless was created only from Kirk's knowledge , he manifested as a QuchHa' Klingon, and exhibited no sense of Klingon honor. ( TOS episode : " The Savage Curtain ") Years later, Kirk related this experience to Klingon Captain Koloth , who taught him about the Klingon view of Kahless. ( TOS novel : In the Name of Honor )

Summary [ ]

O'Brien, Kira, Bashir, and Odo listen to Kor

O'Brien, Kira, Bashir, and Odo listen to Kor tell his story

Dahar master Kor is seated in Quark's , regaling a crowd with the story of the glorious battle between Kor, Kang , and Koloth and the forces of T'nag . Almost the entire bar is gathered around the old Klingon , except Worf , who huddles uncomfortably nearby at the bar, quietly listening. When Kor finishes, Jadzia Dax notices Worf sitting alone and invites him to meet her old friend. Worf declines, reminding her that he is considered an outcast by most Klingons, but she insists. Introduced by Dax anyway, Kor calls Worf a traitor and a pariah, " the lowest of the low, " followed by a long uncomfortable pause – after which he smiles, extends his hand, assures a visibly upset Worf that anyone so disliked at the highest levels of the Klingon Empire is a friend of his.

Shroud of the Sword

Kor shows Dax and Worf the Shroud of the Sword

Kor invites Worf on a mission to recover the Sword of Kahless , the mythical, millennia-old weapon of the Klingon Empire's legendary first leader – an artifact missing for centuries. A Vulcan geological survey team mining bakrinium discovered evidence of the sword's presence without realizing its significance and gifted the Shroud of the Sword to Kor when he was ambassador to Vulcan. Dax, feeling the effects of all the bloodwine she has consumed, decides to check that the shroud is genuine the following morning. She leaves to go to bed, while Kor and Worf continue drinking.

When the drunken Kor finally retires to his quarters after first speaking with Worf, he is attacked by a Lethean named Soto , who reads his mind.

Act One [ ]

The next day, Dax finds Kor passed out following the attack and assumes he is merely hung over. He obviously doesn't remember his encounter with the Lethean, but does recount being thrown out of Quark's and spending some time in Worf's quarters drinking Yridian brandy Worf was saving for a special occasion. Turning to the cloth, Dax explains that she has verified the authenticity of the Shroud, particularly since it shows evidence of Hur'q DNA . Kor, becoming very excited, is ready to go, but she asks him where he got it, first.

Later, Captain Sisko is listening to the explanation in his quarters. Apparently a Vulcan geological survey found it accidentally in ancient ruins on an uncharted planet in the Gamma Quadrant , where it must have been left by the Hur'q. Hoping to restore Federation /Klingon relations, Sisko allows them the use of the USS Rio Grande .

On the way, Kor stops to make a speech, clearly excited about the journey and feeling fortunate to be accompanied by Dax and Worf. The trip takes several hours, so Kor rests and Worf does some mok'bara exercise, pausing to thank Dax for introducing him to Kor. Kor has a fantastical dream of returning the Sword in the Hall of Heroes to Gowron, where the statues of Kang and Koloth come alive, reuniting with him. Soon, though, the team reaches the planet. Since the Vulcans had mapped out the ruins well, Kor knows where to look – an area that once was the Hur'q Central Museum . However, there is a force field that Dax needs to spend time on to break through.

Beaming down, they set up force field destabilizers. They successfully create an interference pattern and the field is gone. Upon arrival in a subterranean vault, the three get into a deserted chamber, but find that all the artifacts hidden there have been removed.

Act Two [ ]

The three are very disappointed, but Worf, unwilling to give up, discovers another chamber. Hidden by a holographic projection , it has a sensor which seemingly only admits Hur'q life signs . Using the Starfleet tricorder to fake them, they enter and finally find the Sword of Kahless. Worf, dumbstruck at seeing the actual sword in person, reaches out to hold it, but lets Kor hold it first.

When they exit the chamber, they are confronted by several Klingons led by Toral, son of Duras , who hired the Lethean to attack Kor and learn about their plans to recover the Sword. Worf initially thinks that Toral wants to be the one to bring back the Sword to restore their family's seat on the Klingon High Council which they lost a few years earlier , however, he says he can lead the Empire himself. Toral also challenges Worf, mentioning the fact that Worf spared his life. Though outnumbered, Kor, Worf, and Dax brawl their way past Toral's group and escape into the caves. Toral's ship was jamming their communications with the runabout, though. Worf suggests that they try going to the surface, so Dax has Kor make sure no one follows.

After a while, Kor asks Worf about his encounter with Toral. When he learns Worf declined the Right of Vengeance , he has second thoughts about him, even calling him not a real Klingon. He blames him for their current predicament, and Worf retorts that Kor earlier boasted about the mission in public, leading Toral to him. Worf goes onward, and Kor expresses regret bringing him along to Dax.

Act Three [ ]

As they trek through the caves, Kor grows increasingly bombastic about plans for the Sword and the Empire when they return. Stopping to kill and cook a rat they find, Kor jokingly exaggerates their encounter with it. Worf is not amused, and further objects to Kor's use of the Sword to hold the meat. Kor ridicules him, and says Kahless used it to skin the Serpent of Xol . Painting Worf as an idealist, he scoffs at the idea of giving the Emperor the Sword instead of Gowron. He expresses that it would require a true warrior to unite the Klingon people, not someone like Gowron or even the reborn Emperor Kahless. Worf disapprovingly supposes Kor wants to take that role, and Kor says the Empire could do much worse. Dax tries to settle the conversation by moving the group along.

Later, Worf decides that it is his destiny, not Kor's, to possess the Sword and lead his people. While Kor gets more food, Worf explains his newfound meaning of his vision of Kahless when he was younger to Dax. Dax is caught in the middle, but it also appears that Kor has been listening from around the corner.

Act Four [ ]

The long journey takes the three of them to an abyss, though there is a ledge they can use to continue. Kor slips and loses his footing, but still gripping the Sword. Worf saves Kor by grabbing the other end. Straining, he tries to convince Kor to let go and land on a ledge below, but Kor refuses, believing Worf is deceiving him. Dax helps pull up Kor and they both look down, seeing the ledge, which is dangerously small. Kor then confronts Worf, saying he tried to kill him. He demands the Sword, but Worf instead raises it against him, and they almost start fighting. Dax holds on to the sword herself as the other two squabble over it.

Later, they stop to take a break. Kor and Worf continue to bicker while Dax observes and tries to stop it. She holds the Sword and a phaser even as she sleeps.

Act Five [ ]

Dax is awakened by the sound of Worf and Kor, ready to fight to the death. They are interrupted when Toral's party catches up to the trio and begins another battle. Kor enthusiastically takes the Sword and engages them. Worf is confident in him, as he has the Sword, and joins him. They soon subdue the whole group, however, Worf and Kor turn on each other, and Worf is on the verge of killing Kor when Dax stuns each of them with her phaser. She turns to Toral and forces him to deactivate the jamming signal, then transports the three of them back to the runabout.

Kor and Worf regard the Sword of Kahless

Kor and Worf view the Sword one last time

Later, on board, Worf and Kor realize that the Sword turned the two of them against each other, and will probably divide the Klingon people as well. Worf ponders if they really were meant to find it; Kor firmly asserts that it was so… but sadly notes that they just were not meant to keep it. They make the decision to beam the sword into space, leaving it to destiny to decide when it should be revealed to the Klingon people.

Memorable quotes [ ]

" You know what I like about Klingon stories, commander? Nothing. Lots of people die, and nobody makes any profit. "

" Which of us had slain him? No one could say for certain, so we cut out his heart and all three of us feasted on it together! " " Big heart. "

" Kor! I have someone I'd like you to meet. " " Oh? " " I'd like you to meet our strategic operations officer, Commander Worf. " " Ah, Worf the traitor, the pariah, the lowest of the low. (big pause then a grin) It's a pleasure to meet you. Any enemy of Gowron and the High Council is a friend of mine. " " This is a great honor. " " No doubt. " " Worf is a great admirer of yours. " " Yes. Please. (they sit) I have heard stories about you since I was a child. Your confrontation with Kirk on Organia , your attack on Romulus, your defense of the Korama Pass… " " Everything I have done pales in comparison to what I am about to achieve. I am on a quest. A quest for the most revered icon in Klingon history… "

" Damn that Ferengi and his replicated bloodwine! "

" A true warrior has no need to exaggerate his feats. " " You'd better hope that I exaggerate, or else when they start singing songs about this quest and come to your verse, it will be "and Worf came along." "

" This is the Sword of Kahless! It is not something to shovel food into your mouth! "

" The sword will unite us if it's held in the hands of a true Klingon, not a politician like Gowron , or some toothless figurehead like the Emperor . The sword must rest in the hands of someone who has been hardened by battle, pure of heart, who understands loyalty and honor. A warrior like Kang and Koloth. " " Someone like you? " " The Empire could do far worse. "

" Did you see the look on the face of that Klingon that I killed? It was as if he understood the honor bestowed upon him. The first man in a thousand years to be killed by the Sword of Kahless. " " I'm sure he was very proud. "

Background information [ ]

Story and script [ ].

  • This episode was written in an effort to more fully integrate the character of Worf into the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine world. All of the fourth season episodes to that date, with the exception of " The Way of the Warrior ", had been green-lit prior to the confirmation of Michael Dorn 's arrival, and as such, Worf tended to be confined to the B-stories of these episodes, if he even figured in them at all. "The Sword of Kahless" was the first show put together after Worf joined the cast, and as such, the producers felt it should focus on him. ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion  (p. ? ))
  • In Hans Beimler 's original draft of the teleplay, the scenes in the caves as Worf, Dax and Kor escape were much more elaborate, and involved a running battle with Toral 's forces as well as booby traps exploding, floors falling out and arrows shooting from the walls. These scenes were no doubt inspired by the opening sequence of the 1981 Steven Spielberg film Raiders of the Lost Ark , but early in the pre-production process, Steve Oster made the decision to cut them, not for budgetary reasons, but for time considerations. To set up and execute all of Beimler's gags, Oster estimated, would have added an entire day onto the shooting schedule, and that was something that they simply could not allow to happen at the time. ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion  (p. ? ))
  • In an early draft of the script Kor referred to the warship IKS K'Tanco , a vessel commanded by Kang. It is possible that this ship is the K't'inga -class battle cruiser Kang commanded in VOY : " Flashback ". For more information of that ship, see Kang's battle cruiser . ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion - A Series Guide and Script Library )
  • This episode may be the closest to the Indiana Jones series that the Star Trek franchise will ever get, with the search for the Sword of Kahless being similar to that of the search for the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade . Indeed, of this episode, director LeVar Burton says, " it's the search for the Holy Grail and it's about how the importance placed on the end of the quest, or on the object, affects who we are. The truth is that life is not about the destination, it's about the journey ." ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion  (p. ? ))
  • The episode has also been referred to as the Star Trek version of the 1948 film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre . ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Collection sleeve notes)
  • In the original script, the USS Mekong was to be the runabout used by Dax, Worf, and Kor, with the Rio Grande being the runabout used in the final episode, as the Mekong was presumed destroyed in " The Die is Cast ". ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion - A Series Guide and Script Library )

Production [ ]

  • The final design of the Sword of Kahless was done by Dan Curry , based upon an illustration by John Eaves . Originally, Eaves was assigned to design the sword himself, but after making some preliminary drawings, he went to Curry, who was the original designer of the bat'leth , and allowed him to finish the project. ( Deep Space Nine Sketchbook: John Eaves , DS9 Season 4 DVD , Special Features)
  • The blue razor Sisko uses to shave his head and beard with in this episode is identical to the razor Geordi La Forge shaved with in TNG : " Code of Honor ". According to Michael and Denise Okuda , it was the same prop from "Code of Honor". ( Star Trek: Fan Collective - Klingon text commentary )

Reception [ ]

  • Showrunner Ira Steven Behr was pleased with the episode. Behr commented: " "The Sword Kahless" was an interesting show to conceive. I thought it was a good Worf show, with the idea of taking Worf to that place where he crosses the line, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre . The goal consumes you, so that it wraps your mind up and you can't shake free of it. I thought that was a lot of fun, and I thought that it worked well. I thought the acting was nice – John Colicos was terrific and Michael was wonderful. I think the episode suffered a little bit production wise. Those caves got a little boring and the action scene at the end was okay, but could have been better. Recently, I've been reading a lot of things that said we didn't use Worf enough, but I thought that the shows that we did use Worf in were all interesting shows, and were definitely interesting takes and interesting riffs on that character. By the time we brought Worf into the mix, we had half the season conceptually. Not stories yet, but we knew what we were going to do in these shows and since we had those ideas, you better believe that we were going to do them, since ideas are tough to come by! " ("The Producer's View", Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The Official Poster Magazine , issue 8)
  • This episode was somewhat unpopular with some viewers when it first aired, something which disappointed writer Hans Beimler and producer René Echevarria . What particularly disappointed them was the fact that many viewers were unable to accept the notion that the bat'leth itself had no actual power. According to Echevarria, " A lot of fan reaction was that there must be a tech explanation, that the sword must be emitting something. I was astonished ." Beimler explains Echevarria's astonishment when he says, " the sword itself doesn't have any magic. It's the concept of the sword that has the power. We wanted to explore the notion that there were some dark streaks to be revealed within these characters. The minute anyone starts talking about the sword it starts infecting them, so Worf gets caught up from the very beginning ." Both men were disappointed that many fans missed this point, instead assuming that the Sword of Kahless had some mysterious power that simply wasn't revealed in the episode. ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion  (p. ? ))
  • The episode has become more popular in recent years and was voted by fans to be part of the Klingon Fan Collective DVD release.
  • John Colicos greatly enjoyed the episode, commenting: " I absolutely loved it. I thought this was a marvelous kind of tour de force, and I loved all the baiting with Worf – the fight that we had together – all of that was really quite fun to play. I enjoyed that tremendously. Hans Beimler wrote it specifically for me, and he gave me glorious opportunities – in fact he put the word 'glorious' in, too, which seems to have gone down in Klingon history" . ("The Sword of Colicos", Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The Official Poster Magazine , issue 8)
  • Upon the opening of the wormhole, Kor remarks that their quest for the sword, "will be glorious." He says something similar to Kirk towards the end of " Errand of Mercy " regarding the possibility of facing the USS Enterprise captain in war.
  • "The Sword of Kahless" was the second episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to be directed by LeVar Burton after " Indiscretion " and the first to have Michael Dorn in a main role. Burton was pleased with the final episode, commenting: " Great episode. Good Klingon stuff. I think that was the first episode I directed last season that had Michael Dorn in it so it was great to hook up with him again. That was a lot of fun for me. I thought John Colicos was terrific, too. It was also a show that was memorable for me because we spent so much time in the caves on Stage 17 . of the seven-or-eight-day schedule, we had about four in the caves, I enjoyed it. I thought that was a good episode ". Burton also coined the name "Action Barbie" for Farrell during the filming of the episode. He explained the origin thusly: " Action Barbie – that's my girl. Because she is. She's Action Barbie. She's this incredibly statuesque woman who doesn't mind throwing a kick or punching you in the groin. She's Action Barbie to me ". ("Directing The Sword of Kahless", Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The Official Poster Magazine , issue 8)
  • Terry Farrell commented: " ["The Sword of Kahless"] was great because it was the first time I did action for LeVar Burton . He didn't expect me to do well at it. When I did, he called me 'Action Barbie'. So "Sword of Kahless" was my Action Barbie episode, and I've been Action Barbie on the set ever since ". ( The Official Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Magazine  issue 18 )
  • Toral was last seen in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, " Redemption II ", in which he was played by J.D. Cullum .
  • The Hur'q are also mentioned in the Star Trek: Enterprise episode " Affliction ".
  • Worf makes a reference to Kor's battle "with Kirk on Organia," a reference to TOS : " Errand of Mercy " where Kor made his first appearance.
  • Cirroc Lofton ( Jake Sisko ) does not appear in this episode.

Star trek teases a dark fate for an original series god-like species.

As IDW's Star Trek title hits the mid-way point on its second year, it teases a dark fate for a powerful god-like species from the Original Series.

  • The last Organian comes to Sisko for help in fixing a crisis in the Pleroma, or the Realm of the Gods.
  • T’Lir reveals their true identity as an Organian, setting the stage for a big mission in the Pleroma
  • Kahless's attack on the Organians may have personal roots due to their history of enforcing peace, and curbing Klingon aggression.

Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek #18!

Star Trek has teased a dark fate for a god-like species from the Original Series. Captain Kirk and company met a number of god-like beings and races during the original Star Trek run, and these same entities have been on alert since Kahless declared war on them all. Now, in issue 18, the sole survivor of one of these races comes to Sisko with a desperate plea for help.

Star Trek #18 is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Marcus To. After being chewed out by Starfleet for his actions on the Tzenkethi homeworld, Captain Sisko is paid a visit by T’Lir, his former science officer. T’Lir was reassigned shortly after the Klingon uprising, and they tell Sisko “the veil is starting to thin.” T’Lir explains that the Pleroma, the Realm of the Gods, is in serious trouble.

T’Lir then identifies themselves as the last of the Organians, and that they and Sisko must “help fix the wound at the center of all things.”

The Organians Have a Long History in the Star Trek Universe

They were responsible for enforcing peace on the federation and the klingons.

This revelation put to bed T’Lir’s secret identity. Since issue one, Lanzing and Kelly had been hinting there was more to T’Lir than met the eye, and they were a god-like being themselves. T’Lir has been absent from the book for several months, but has now returned to take Sisko on what might be their biggest mission yet– to the mysterious Pleroma , which has been teased in past issues. This “Realm of the Gods” is under siege from Kahless and his god-killer. Judging from T’Lir’s remarks, Kahless has already made short work of the Organians.

The last of my people. The only living thing left to call Organia home.-T'Lir

The Organians were one of the first such races encountered in the Star Trek universe. Introduced in the first season episode “An Errand of Mercy,” the Organians used their vast power to impose a peace treaty on both the Klingons and the Federation. Outwardly, the Organians resembled primitive humans, and seemed to lack any kind of technology, but this was just a ruse. The Organians made one more on-screen appearance, in the fourth season of Star Trek: Enterprise , in the episode “The Observer Effect.” They have been depicted as beings of great power, yet they have been reduced to one.

Kahless Had Good Reason to Attack the Organians

Kahless' crusade just became personal.

The Organians' past actions may explain why Kahless attacked them. Kahless declared war on the universe’s god-like beings in order to fulfill the mandate of his namesake, but the Organians may occupy a special place for him. After the Organian peace treaty, the Federation and the Klingons never went to war again, and indeed the treaty can be viewed as the end of Klingon aggression. Kahless preached a message of Klingon renewal, and his attack on Organia could have been personal. The ultra-powerful Organians are now an endangered species in the Star Trek universe.
