How would you like to go to sleep in Spain and wake up in Italy? You can do just that when taking a cruise—you can be exploring caves in Mallorca one day and eating gelato in Sicily the next. And the Costa Smeralda cruise ship can take you there (and dozens of other places too!). Not only is it one of the largest ships in the world, it is also packed with top-notch entertainment, unique food choices and eclectic bars. Plus, you only have to unpack once. Don’t you love that about cruising?

About Costa Smeralda Ship

Costa Smeralda is the flagship of Costa Cruises—it is their largest operating cruise ship and is the fifth-largest in the world. Within its massive 337-meter-long frame are 20 decks, 2612 passenger cabins, 19 restaurants, over a dozen bars and other amenities. It can carry a maximum of 6554 passengers and 164 crew members. Wowza!

YouTube video

Staying true to its Italian heritage, the cruise ships has severals areas that are designed and pay homage to Italy, like the Bel Paese (a type of Italian cheese) and landmarks such as Piazza di Spagna and Trastevere.

Another impressive fact is that the Costa Smeralda cruise ship is environmentally friendly. It runs entirely on liquefied natural gas, which helps improve air quality and reduces greenhouse gas emissions!

Construction of the ship started on July 4, 2018, by Meyer Turku (a shipbuilding company) and was launched to sea on March 15, 2019. After a series of sea trials, it was handed over to Costa Cruises on December 5, 2019. Costa Smeralda started its inaugural cruise on December 21, 2019.

Costa Smeralda Experience

Cruising aboard the Costa Smeralda is a one-of-a-kind experience. Aside from taking you to dream destinations worldwide, their excellent service guarantees a fun, safe, and relaxing cruise for everyone.

Excursions & Ports

There are many different fun excursions for each port/destination, from riding a historic train in Mallorca to wine-tasting in Messina to traveling around Barcelona on an electric bike.

My Mediterranean itinerary went from Barcelona to Rome and had dozens of different outings to choose from. And don’t you love it when you pick the right cruise excursion? That’s exactly what happened when our Costa Smeralda ship ported in Palma de Mallorca. I picked an excursion to the Caves of Drach. Have you ever heard of them? They consist of four connected caves that have a length of over 2 miles and depth of 80+ feet. As if that’s not bucket list worthy enough, there was a beautiful concert performed in the depths of the cave where the musicians glided in on lighted rowboats.

Caves of Drach Palma de Mollorca in Spain

Our next port brought me to Sicily. It was my first time there, so it was hard to pick an excursion, but a tour of the pretty little hilltop town of Taormina was the winner.

We walked the cobbled streets peaking into picturesque narrow walkways and cute shops until we reached the ultimate historical gem—the Greek Theater that dates back to the 3rd century BC!

Restaurant and Bars

Once you get a taste of one of the two dozen restaurants and bars, you will be wishing for more sea days! From a Nutella bar to scoops of Gelato just as good as on the streets of Rome to an authentic Italian pizzeria where the pies are topped with mozzarella made fresh onboard, the tastes of Italy don’t disappoint. Did I mention the Campari bar that’s dedicated to the bitter Italian liqueur?

Annette's drink on the Campari Bar onboard Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

Though Italian-food centric, the cuisine onboard is also inspired by different regions worldwide and will surely make your tongue dance! Theres a poke bowl station, made-to-order sushi togo that can be enjoyed anywhere on the ship and a teppanyaki restaurant where the chef’s show is just as good as the lobster he put on my plate. Hungry yet?

Entertainment

You’ll have as much fun as doing shore excursions onboard the Costa Smeralda ship. From watching dazzling live musical shows to zipping down the water slide, there is endless entertainment for all ages!

For the adults, don’t miss trying your luck in the casino, and at my personal favorite game—video roulette (bet on number 19 for me!). You can also lose yourself in music in their Silent Party, wearing headphones that play the songs you choose.

Costa inside Smeralda Cruise Ship

Definitely pay a visit to the ultra-unique CoDe Museum that celebrates Italian design from the 1930s to today. It includes everything from furniture to fashion.

There are 4 types of cabins you can choose from in Costa Smeralda that will suit your needs: Inside, Ocean View, Balcony, and Suite. All have air conditioning, a flat-screen satellite TV, WiFi, hairdryers, a safe, 24-hour room service, and world-class comfort. Plus, I was super impressed by the roomy bathroom that had lots of storage!

My Premium Balcony let me enjoy the breeze while having a more open view of the sea through the balcony.  Waking up to different Instagrammable sights and places is definitely a perk for me!

Sports and Wellness

Your mind and body will thank you for pampering yourself with Costa Smeralda’s variety of wellness facilities. These include a swimming pool and jacuzzi, relaxing massages, beauty treatments, and so much more.

For some people, going on a trip around the world is not complete without taking a souvenir with you back home. You’ll have tons of shopping opportunities while at port, but there’s also plenty of things to choose from inside Costa Smeralda. From beauty products and perfumes to accessories and clothing, even gifts and essentials, you’ll have the perfect item that suits your needs.

With brand names such as Clinique, Chanel, Tommy Hilfiger, and Guess, you will know the quality is top-notch.

How to Book at Costa Smeralda

You can book a cruise at Costa Smeralda on their official site . They have a lot of itineraries to choose from. You can also filter the results by putting in your preferred departure port, duration, and price to see the ones that best fit your needs. I can definitely vouch for an epic Mediterranean cruise!

They also offer cruise and shopping discounts, as well as other perks for Costa Club members. If you are interested, you might want to check that out as well.

Going on a cruise is not just about seeing different places and experiencing new things on land and sea. It is also about going on that journey to the unknown and discovering more of yourself in the process. The Costa Smeralda can take you on that journey.

Costa Smeralda Cruise Guide

The 6,518-passenger Costa Smeralda was named after Sardinia’s popular tourist coast, and spends her time in the Western Mediterranean. Costa has invested time and money into the cabins on this ship, commissioning a well-known Italian architectural firm to add things like bathroom walls made to look like marble, a full-height window in the shower to improve lighting and create the feel of more space, and a photographic panel with an embedded television depicting an Italian city view in the cabin.

Debuted in December 2019, the Costa Smeralda accommodates more than 6,500 passengers and 1,600-plus crew members, making it one of the largest cruise ships within Costa's fleet. The ship was the first within the line (and within the Carnival brand, Costa's parent company) to be powered by liquefied natural gas, the world's cleanest burning fossil fuel.

Stateroom options on Costa Smeralda include Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Terrazza cabins, plus two different kinds of suites. While Inside and Ocean View cabins provide basic accommodations and amenities (including a television), the Balcony Terrazza and Suite rooms provide more space and a small- to medium-sized veranda with seating.

Outside of their cabins, cruisers have access to 11 dining options. Sushino at Costa is the cruise line's first sushi bistro delighting guests with an authentic Japanese experience. Those interested in learning more about cooking can test their skills in the kitchen lab and get tips from a top chef. When it's time for a cocktail, guests can head to the Aperol Spritz Bar for the classic orange aperitif.

The cruise ship also features a spa, a skywalk that lines the perimeter of the ship's top deck, boutique shops, a pool and a water park complete with a waterslide. Passengers with children between the ages of 1 and 3 can also take advantage of a supervised kids club.

Costa Smeralda sails throughout the Mediterranean.

Cruise Like An Italian On Costa Smeralda

By Author Daryl and Mindi Hirsch

Posted on Published: October 21, 2021  - Last updated: February 28, 2024

Pinterest images: photos of Costa Smeralda and Pizza with caption reading

Discover what it’s like to leave the daily grind and cruise like an Italian on Costa Smeralda, the world’s fifth largest cruise ship.

Deck on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

When you embark on a Costa Smeralda cruise you have to place all luxury pretense aside and transport yourself to the land of pizza, pasta and Fellini.

This is a ship where fashionistas stroll the corridors while flocks of energetic ragazzi e ragazze play on waterslides and in game rooms. All the greatest hits of Italy are here and, if you can get past some of the cultural differences, Americans like us can jump head first into the Italian mashup.

Pro Tip Don’t cruise without travel insurance !

Windy Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship Selfie

We love eating in Italy so much that we’ve built a good portion of our website around pasta in Emilia-Romagna , pizza in Naples , truffle hunts, risotto and generous amounts of vino.

Costa ships like the Smeralda serve plenty of Italian cuisine and they do it well. But you’ll need to embrace a variety of Italian cultural quirks when sailing on this ship since only 10% of its passengers are US citizens. Food is just one Italian aspect of the Smeralda experience.

Discover our Italian food favorites .

Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship Statue

This isn’t a cruise where passengers should expect to be served hand and foot. However, considering the value of the rooms, it’s easy to justify paying for extras like individual pizzas, a range of Italian salumi, homemade pasta and an excellent steak or two.

During our voyage, we traveled from Barcelona to Rome with two exotic Mediterranean port stops along the way. However, we felt like we arrived in Italy days before we actually disembarked the ship in Rome.

Discover our favorite restaurants in Barcelona and Rome .

Italian Style Cruising On Costa Smeralda

Hallway on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

The Italian style of cruising with Costa Cruises is immersive.

We caught the vibe as soon as we boarded the Smeralda and observed an interior layered in chrome and daring 60s retro furnishings. On this ship, chairs are shaped like high heeled shoes and marble laden lounge areas resemble a cross between ancient Roman temples and hair salons. Even the ship’s public bathroom stalls sport a uniquely stylish striped decor that evokes memories of old-school ice cream parlors.

Design Museum on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

Curious cruisers can peruse CoDe, the unique Costa Design studio curated by Matteo Vercellon. This onboard museum highlights Italy’s role in the design of couture, furniture and automobiles.

However, we were most struck by our initial lunch buffet filled with dozens of cured meats like Proscuitto di Parma, Mortadella and spicy, spreadable Calabrian Nduja… and that was just one station. Another station served piles of cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano, Fontina and Mozzarella. The kitchen pulls fresh mozzarella on board the ship. You can’t get more Italian than that.

Mozzarella Cheese on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

Bruno Barbieri, a Michelin-starred chef and TV personality hailing from Emilia-Romagna, helms Costa’s culinary program. His influence is best experienced in specialty restaurants like the Bellavista Club where dishes include Blinis topped with Italian caviar and freshly made Buffalo Zizzona cheese balls that, in an Italian nod toward unsubtle sexual suggestion, look strangely bosom-like. (That being said, the creamy, fresh mozzarella was super tasty.)

And, while it’s easy to find pizza and gelato on board, there’s plenty of uniquely Italian entertainment too. On this ship, performers croon hit songs like Mambo Italiano without translation or irony. We found oft-performed Italian hits like Musica leggerissima harder to shake from our heads than an Italian attempting to shake a cigarette habit. Good news! Costa Smeralda is non-smoking except in designated areas and on private balconies.

Charcuterie Plate on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

Despite details like marble floors and velvet chairs, cruising on Costa Smeralda is a relatively affordable way to experience Europe without a big price tag. We liken it to RyanAir with its austere, unadorned cabins and an overwhelming number of foods available for additional fees. Since most extras aren’t expensive, we recommend splurging without hesitation on items like sushi, pizza and gelato.

We can easily visualize a group of hipster/gen X friends having a hoot on this Italian cruise. There’s not much better than singing along to That’s Amore and gorging on pizza while floating across the Mediterranean. These kinds of memories last forever.

Cruising with Costa Cruises During the COVID 19 Pandemic Any fears we had about post-pandemic cruising were alleviated by Costa’s comprehensive health protocols that included on-site COVID testing and daily temperature checks as well as mask requirements in all public spaces. The cruise line also limigd capacity to 60% at the time of our cruise.

Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

If you think that the Costa Smeralda cruise ship is big, you are correct. It’s one of the largest cruise ships in the world. Currently, only four ships exceed its size.

Not only is Costa’s flagship vessel the world’s fifth largest cruise ship, but it also has 20 decks, 2,612 cabins and capacity for 6,554 passengers. Launched in 2019, the ship also sports 11 restaurants, 19 bars, a wellness spa with 16 treatment rooms, four pools and one massive water park.

Beyond its impressive stats, Costa Smeralda stands out for its ‘pace not waste’ approach to serving food and its utilization of liquefied natural gas (LNG) fossil fuel.

Balcony Cabin on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

Staying in a balcony cabin during our cruise was a comfortable way to travel from Barcelona to Rome. Simultaneously simple and comfortable, the 205 square foot room included a firm queen bed, couch, desk and chair. It also featured basic amenities such as a smart television, hairdryer and wi-fi.

We particularly appreciated the cabin’s 45 square foot balcony. This private outdoor space was our ‘happy place’ for viewing sunrises and chilling after a busy day at sea.

Pro Tip Although our bathroom had ample amounts of soap next to the sink and in the shower, neither shampoo nor conditioner was provided. Be sure to pack these necessary toiletries unless you’d rather purchase them on the ship.

Staff And Service

Pizzaiolo on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

Considering that Costa Smeralda employs 1,678 crew members, it’s no surprise that it’s easy to find assistance when necessary. That being said, many crew members work behind the scenes to ensure safe, stress-free journeys for the ship’s international passengers.

We primarily interacted with food service personnel during our voyage. We found these crew members to be both professional and polite. Further, they were all proficient in English even if it wasn’t their primary language.

Pool on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

With four pools on the ship, swimmers and sunbathers didn’t have to search long for a spot during our autumnal cruise. As a bonus, some water spaces are designed for families and that’s not counting the ship’s ginormous water park.

Blissful Massage on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

There’s no bliss like the bliss of a getting a massage during vacation. We achieved this enviable state during a couples massage in Smeralda’s Solemio Spa.

However, massages aren’t the most interesting aspect of the ship’s spa. Unique offerings include a thalassotherapy pool with swings and a snow room filled with actual snow. Brrr .

Casino Table on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

While gambling isn’t the main event on this family-friendly ship, Costa Smeralda has a full service casino with more than enough tables and machines to satisfy risk-taking cruisers with euros to burn. Gaming options include roulette and black jack as well as video-enhanced slots.

Onboard Entertainment

Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship Entertainment

Costa Smeralda’s entertainment stands out for one main reason – much of it is presented in Italian.

Many of the ship’s performers sing Italian songs, some of which are familiar and some not. To us, the Italian entertainment was a fun element, especially the shows performed in small venues and intimate settings.

Fans of more elaborate entertainment can join the crowds at the ship’s Colosseum and Sanremo Theater. Options at these venues included Broadway-style productions and acrobatic feats during our cruise.

Gourmet Dinner on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

Food is the main event for the majority of cruise enthusiasts… including us. Accordingly, we were pleased to discover a vast variety of dining options during our Costa Smeralda cruise.

While most items available in the main dining room and at the buffet are included in the base cost, the cruise’s more interesting food options require extra fees. While these fees are relatively minor, they can add up if one isn’t careful.

Italian Specialties

Pasta on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

When we cruised in Asia, we ate Asian food . When we cruised in France, we ate French food. Likewise, when we cruised on Costa Smeralda, we ate as much Italian food as was humanly possible.

To be clear, finding Italian food on the cruise wasn’t a problem. Instead, the challenge was to find stomach space for the ship’s wide range of Italian cuisine. We’re talking about Neapolitan pizza and Venice ‘s Cicchetti .

Cheese and Cured Meat on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

And how could we forget the inevitable piles of cheese and charcuterie from Italian cities like Bologna and Modena that tempted us at buffets and restaurants at breakfast, lunch and dinner? We can’t.

After eating our way through Italy before we actually arrived in Italy, these were are favorites and the dishes you shouldn’t miss during your cruise:

Pizza At Pizzeria Pummid’Oro

Pizza on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

We didn’t expect to find a full-service pizzeria on a cruise ship, even an Italian cruise ship, but that’s exactly what we found at Pizzeria Pummid’Oro. This cruise ship pizzeria has a proper pizza oven and dedicated pizzaiolos.

More importantly, Pizzeria Pummid’Oro serves excellent pizzas. We sampled the Margarita and Calabrese Piccante pies for research purposes and were more than satisfied with both.

Cicchetti At Il Bacaro Venetian Bar

Cicchetti Bar on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

After first encountering Cicchetti in Verona , we became fans of Italy’s small plate concept in Venice where Cicchetti bars are a mecca for aperitivo fans of all ages. To say that we were happy to encounter a Cicchetti bar on Costa Smeralda is an understatement.

We found the cruise version to be more formal compared to typical Venetian Cicchetti bars. However, it’s still a fun concept and one that we fully support.

Gelato At Amarillo

Gelato on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

We rarely resist gelato whether we’re at home in Lisbon or in Italian cities like Bologna , Naples or Venice . After walking by Amarillo, Smeralda’s gelateria, numerous times, we finally succumbed and ordered a double decker cone to share.

Although that tasty cone was both our first and last during the cruise, we returned to Amarillo multiple times to drink the ship’s best cappuccinos. We also ordered a slice of cake one morning and called it breakfast.

Nutella Waffles At Nutella At Costa

Nutella Waffles on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

Although the chocolate hazelnut spread called Nutella is available around the world today, it was originally an Italian specialty when Pietro Ferrero started selling his creamy creation in Alba back in 1951.

Costa Smeralda serves Ferrero’s Nutella creations at a dedicated kiosk near the ship’s largest pool. Options include croissants, muffins, pancakes, waffles and crêpes. We opted for a plate of waffles topped with Nutella, strawberries and whipped cream. It was a good choice.

Specialty Dining

Steak on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

Beyond Italian specialities, Costa Smeralda offers a range of venues that justify splurging on a special meal or two. These venues serve more upscale food offerings as well as cuisine with a global slant.

Since these specialty venues involve a surcharge, be sure to check the current fees and any reservation requirements to avoid unpleasant surprises or disappointment. Once again, we believe the surcharges are worth the extra expenditure. With a bit of planning, it won’t cost you that much to skip the buffets and eat excellently on board the ship.

Sushi on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

We dined at a handful of specialty restaurants during our Costa Smeralda cruise and recommend the following:

  • Laboratorio del Gusto (Taste Lab) – interactive cooking experience
  • Bellavista Club Restaurant – the ship’s most upscale dining room
  • Sushino – all you can eat sushi and sashimi
  • Teppanyaki Restaurant – Asian grill with chefs that double as performers

Italian Drinks

Hugo Sprita on the Costa Smerelda w Mozzerella

Cruising Italian style doesn’t just involve eating Italian food. It also involves imbibing Italian drinks.

Since drinks aren’t typically included in this cruise line’s base fee, we recommend buying a drink package. This approach will allow you to fully enjoy the cruise without feeling ‘nickel and dimed’ every time you order a beverage.

We followed our own advice. Having a drink package enabled us to sample a wide range of beverages including soft drinks, wine, beer, cocktails and specialty coffee. After whetting our whistle at various bars and restaurants, these were our favorites:

Negroni Cocktails

Campari Negroni on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

No matter where we are in the world, drinking Negroni cocktails always reminds of Negronis we’ve imbibed during aperitivo sessions in Italy. We certainly felt this way every time we visited the ship’s Campari Bar.

Not only is the Campari Bar gorgeous, but it serves the most classic Negroni we’ve ever tasted at sea. The combination of bitter and sweet is one of our favorites.

Aperol Spritzes

Aperol Spritz on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

Since its debut in Padua back in 1919, the Aperol Spritz has conquered the world one glass at a time. After drinking the bittersweet cocktail in bars in countries throughout Europe, we can now add drinking an Aperol Spritz at sea to our cocktail resume.

While it’s easy to order an Aperol Spritz at various bars on Costa Smeralda, the smart move is to head to the Aperol Spritz Bar on Deck 17 for the full Aperol Spritz experience. This funky bar is as orange as the cocktail itself which is to say that it’s as bright as the sun during a Mediterranean sunset.

Sommelier on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

Italy is a wonderland for oenophiles who covet excellent wine produced throughout the country. We’re no exception since we adore sipping Amarone in Verona, Brunello di Montalcino in Florence and Lambrusco in Bologna, just to name a few varietals.

As one would expect, Costa stocks a plethora of Italian wines on the Smeralda. Standout bottles during our cruise included a fruity Nebbiolo from Piedmont and a ruby red Aglianico del Vulture from Basilicata.

Cappuccinos

Cappuccino on the Costa Smeralda Cruise Ship

Taking a five-day Italian cruise is tiring for travelers who want to enjoy activities from dawn to dark. That’s where coffee comes to play.

Having a drink package allowed us to order cappuccinos at any and every cafe and bar. Ironically, we found our favorite cappuccino at the ship’s gelateria. Now that’s a sweet irony!

Cruise Ports And Excursions

Grapes on Vine at Tenuta San Michele Winery in Sicily

Costa Smeralda’s Mediterranean route typically spans a week with stops in Palma da Mallorca, Messina (Sicily), Civitavecchia (Rome), Savona (Genoa), Marseille and Barcelona. However, unlike most cruise lines, this ship allows passengers to board and disembark at any stops along the way.

We joined the cruise in Barcelona and sailed to Rome with stops in Mallorca and Sicily. These were the highlights at each port:

Port 1 – Barcelona

Wine and Jamon in Barcelona

Barcelona isn’t just notable for being our port of embarkation, it’s also Spain’s second largest city and the crown jewel of Catalonia. We first visited Barcelona during our honeymoon in 2007 and returned in 2016 after spending a few weeks in nearby Girona .

This visit was different. Prior to boarding the ship, we ate an assortment of Spanish favorites, experienced gastronomic wonders, scarfed down great pizza, savored fabulous desserts, sipped crafted coffee and drank more than our share of wine. In other words, we lived large in Barcelona before boarding the ship.

Port 2 – Palma De Mallorca

Scene from Palma Walking Tour with Costa Cruises

Located in the Mediterranean Sea due west of Valencia , Palma is a Spanish city that doubles as the capital of Mallorca. Popular with sun seekers and wine enthusiasts, the city was established by the Romans and later conquered by the Moors.

Mallorca Walking Tour with Costa Cruises

While in Palma, we participated in an informative three-hour walking tour that provided us with an introduction to Palma’s sites including the Escollera seafront, the Almudaina Royal Palace and the Cathedral of Santa Maria (also known as La Seu). With a quick stop for tapas and sangria, the excursion whetted our appetites for a return visit to further explore Palma’s food culture in the future.

Port 3 – Messina

View of Messina from the Costa Smerald aCruise Ship

Visiting Sicily was our key motivation for accepting Costa’s invitation. The opportunity to taste Cannoli, Sicilian Pizza, Arancini, Cassata and Granita at the source was too big to ignore. Unfortunately, due to pandemic rules, we’ll have to satisfy that travel goal in the future.

Don’t feel bad for us. Instead of eating our way through Sicily, we drank wine instead.

Tenuta San Michele Winery in Sicily

Our Sicily excursion took us from the Messina port to Santa Venerina. This incredible experience at the foot of Mount Etna more than compensated for our inability to explore independently.

In retrospect, this cruise excursion was one of the best cruise excursions we’ve taken. Ever.

Wine Tasting Spread with Costa Cruises

While touring Tenuta San Michele’s cellar, we learned about the Sicilian wine-making process before tasting wine along with a spread of locally source meat, cheese and olives in the winery’s delightful garden.

This fun excursion gave us a firsthand introduction to Sicily’s vast viticulture. Enjoying snacks rumored to include donkey meat in a bucolic atmosphere among new friends made the experience even more memorable.

Port 4 – Rome

Pantheon in Rome

Ah, Rome. The eternal city keeps pulling us back thanks to its seemingly endless supply of pizza and gelato . Now that we’ve discovered specialty coffee in Rome, we’ll be well caffeinated every time we return to eat pasta dishes like Amatriciana , Carbonara , Cacio e Pep e and Gricia .

Discover our Rome food favorites that transcend pizza and pasta. Then consider taking a Rome street food tour .

Final Thoughts On Our Italian Cruise On Costa Smeralda

Sicily Winery Selfie at Tenuta San Michele Winery in Sicily

Cruising during a pandemic has challenges that start with nose swabs and masks and ends with bubble tours that replace independent exploration. For us, pizza, pasta and Italian cocktails justified the minor inconveniences.

Click here to explore Costa Smeralda cruise options . Who knows? Maybe you’ll find an itinerary that makes your heart sing with Italian lyrics.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.

Platinum/Imperial Program:  This morning takes us on an early crossing of Lake Beloye, or the White Lake, once known as the “tsar’s fishing grounds”, before arriving in the peaceful village of Goritsy where we tour the Ferapontov Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. He painted the temple ceiling about 10 years before Michelangelo even started on the Sistine Chapel! Return to the ship for a late lunch and afternoon cruising.

Day 8 Kizhi in Karelia

One of the most well-known Russian symbols, Kizhi Island on the waters of Lake Onega, which included in the UNESCO heritage list will amaze you! Explore a collection of ancient Russian wooden houses and windmills, and the famous Transfiguration church, built in 1714 without a single nail. It has withstood the Earth's elements for more than 150 years and yet this spectacular church remains the tallest wooden structure in the world.

Enjoy the Piano Concert – pieces by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, upon returning to the cruise ship.

Day 9 Svirstroy

While cruising along the 139-mile-long Svir River, appreciate the quiet understated beauty of a region that has long inspired artists and poets. The ship passes quaint riverside hamlets before reaching Lake Ladoga. Step ashore for a brief visit to the vacation village of Svirstroy to experience daily life in a quaint wooden village on your own. The village, which was razed to the ground during the Second World War, stands a reproduction of a traditional Russian settlement.

Here, every effort is made to create a warm, homely atmosphere and welcome each guest with personalized attention. Barbeque on the Open Deck will be organised for you upon the returning from the walking tour.

Day 10 St.Petersburg

Gold Program: After cruising along remarkable villages and enjoying picturesque scenery, we finally arrive at St Petersburg – one of Europe’s beautiful cities, the cultural capital of Russia.

Enjoy a tour of the St. Petersburg city centre, including Peter and Paul Fortress, burial place of the Romanov monarchs, and Nevsky Prospect, with its endless fine shops, cafes and museums.

Platinum/Imperial Program:  The MS Volga Dream ties up in St. Petersburg on the Neva River where we disembark for a city tour, including Peter and Paul Fortress Tour, the Royal Romanov burial site and Nevsky Prospect with its rich selection of fine shops, cafes, and museums.

During lunch you will enjoy the Red Army Choir Performance. After meal we embark on a canal cruise sailing under the city’s many historic bridges and past its magnificent pastel. The day ends with a tour of Yusupov’s Palace – a former home to one of St. Petersburg’s wealthiest aristocrats. The enigmatic story of Grigory Rasputin, the monk assassinated here by Prince Felix Yusupov, is told in this very basement.

Day 11 St.Petersburg

Gold Program: Begin today at the renowned Hermitage Museum, home to one of the most important collections of European art in the world.

Lunch is followed by a tour of the meticulously restored Peterhof, St. Petersburg’s most famous and spectacular Imperial estate, often cited as the Versailles of Russia. Visit the authentic Bath Cottage and stroll in the vast Lower Park with 176 fountains of various forms and styles and four cascades, majestic palaces and numerous gilded statues of ancient gods and heroes. The rest of the day is spent at your leisure or join one of our optional tours.

Platinum/Imperial Program:  The morning takes you to one of the most famous museums in the world, the awe-inspiring Hermitage in the lavishly decorated Winter Palace. (To avoid crowds, we’ve arranged for you, to gain entrance before official opening hours.) After exploring the main galleries of the Hermitage, proceed to the Gold Room, usually closed to general public, with a collection of Scythian gold and elaborate imperial gifts.

Lunch is followed by a tour to the spectacular Imperial estate of Peterhof, often dubbed the Russian Versailles. The vast Lower Park, with its 176 fountains and four cascades, is a glorious place to walk, taking in majestic palaces and numerous gilded statues of ancient gods and heroes.

Day 12 St.Petersburg

Gold Program:  This morning, join one of the optional tours or explore St. Petersburg at your own pace.

In the afternoon, we travel to Pushkin town, where Catherine the Great’s Palace is located. It houses the extraordinary Amber Room, its six tons of solid amber deftly carved and framed in gold leaf. Once deemed the “eighth wonder of the world,” the room was stripped by the Nazis in 1941, but majestically reconstructed in honour of St. Petersburg’s 300th birthday.

Platinum/Imperial Program:  Enjoy a full sightseeing day with a visit to the Fabergé Museum, founded by entrepreneur, Viktor Vekselberg. The museum was opened in December 2013 to display a glittering collection of Faberge eggs and objects d’art created by Peter Carl Fabergé and his staff. Vekselberg's collection is rated as one of the world's most valuable and includes items he bought from the Forbes family in 2004 for $100 million.

After lunch, we travel to the Tsar’s Village to visit the famous Catherine’s Palace and the exquisitely recreated Amber Room. A stroll through the formal gardens is highly recommended. We enter the Pushkin grounds through the Golden Gate and ascend the staircase to the Grand Hall. The Golden Enfilade offers a glorious view of the Amber Room.

Helpful Cruise Line Information

If you've cruised before you probably have a favorite cruise line. Here at CruiseExperts.com we make it easy for you to sort through the cruise line of your choice for the best cruises at the best discounts on your favorite cruise line. Choose from the best cruise lines in the world including Carnival, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Holland America, Celebrity, Crystal, Azamara, Oceania, Viking, Avalon, and Disney. Best Cruise Deals and Discounts sorted by your dream destination

Sometimes it's all about the destination and that is certainly true of cruise destinations. The cruise port you depart from and the amazing cruise ports you visit define your experience as much as what cruise line or cruise ship you sail on. At CruiseExperts.com we understand that and have sorted these cruises by the places you'll visit on your cruise vacation. So whether it's a cruise to Alaska, a Caribbean cruise, cruises to Hawaii, a cruise to the Bahamas or Bermuda or a cruise to Mexico you'll find it easily with the help of our destination wizard. Maybe you're looking for a cruise vacation that's just a little different like a Panama Canal cruise, a Transatlantic cruise, cruises to Europe, a Tahiti cruise with a tour of the South Pacific, a down under adventure with an Australia / New Zealand cruise or even a fall foliage cruise through Canada and New England. Whatever “floats your boat” get started by selecting your dream destination on our cruise search page .

Last Minute Cruises can sometimes be the cheapest cruise deal.

Sometimes, but not always, the cheapest cruise deal is a Last Minute Cruise. You won't get a wide selection of stateroom categories or a chance to select your stateroom location but if your schedule is flexible you just might find a cheap cruise price on a last minute cruise. Last minute cruises are cruises leaving in the next 90 days. The cruise line really wants to fill those last few staterooms and sometimes will offer them at a discount cruise price in exchange for you giving up your right to a full selection of cabin categories or deck locations. CruiseExperts.com makes it easy for you to poke around and see what's available in last minute cruise deals. View our Last Minute Cruise Deals by clicking here and give it a try. This is one of our most popular website features.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).
