Watch Time-Lapse Footage of a Giant Cruise Ship's Construction
By kirstin fawcett | jun 20, 2016.
Building a cruise ship is just like completing any other large and momentous task: You do it piece by piece, bit by bit. Gizmodo recently posted a time-lapse video of the mesmerizing construction process, filmed by German video production company MK timelapse . The footage shows cranes and pulleys assembling the AIDAprima —the new flagship of German cruise line AIDA Cruises—at the Mitsubishi shipyard in Nagasaki, Japan.
The 124,500 gross ton vessel was finally completed in early 2016, and hit the open sea in April. Today, it carries 3300 passengers and 900 crew members. Watch the AIDAprima slowly transform from an empty metal shell into a grand, $645 million ocean liner as the months fly by in the video above.

Cruise Line Shares Construction Timelapse of New Ship [VIDEO]
Sarah Bretz, Contributor
- November 3, 2020
P&O Cruises officially took ownership of their new vessel Iona last month, which is set to begin sailing with passengers in 2021. It’s the largest cruise ship ever built for the UK market and the first British cruise ship to be powered by liquefied natural gas.
In celebration of Iona joining the P&O Cruises and Carnival Corporation family, the line shared a time-lapse construction video from when major blocks were being added onto the ship all the way until she was floated out for further finishing touches to be added outside.

P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said of her delivery, “ Iona ‘s delivery is a very positive signal for the future of cruising. She is now officially part of the P&O Cruises fleet and we are focused on readying her to welcome guests during her new maiden season to Northern Europe, Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands from our home port of Southampton.”
Iona is part of Carnival Corporation’s Excellence class of ships, which also includes AIDA Cruises’ AIDAnova, Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras, and Costa Cruises’ Costa Smeralda.

Iona includes many brand-new features for P&O, including a two-deck pool space with a glass dome roof called SkyDome, the first-ever gin distillery at sea, and a spa with destination-themed treatments. The ship also has eight specialty restaurants, 13 entertainment venues, and an infinity pool that looks out over the scenery at the aft.

VIDEO: P&O Cruises Iona timelapse
P&O Cruises released a timelapse video showing its largest-ever cruise ship being built.
Viewers can see the 2-year build process for the US$ 950 million (GBP 733 million) new ship , Iona , speeded-up into the footage captured at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany .
Iona, which is also the biggest-ever ship built for the UK market, was handed over to P&O at an official ceremony earlier this month. With GT tonnage 185,000 tons, the 345 m (1131 ft) long vessel has 19 decks (11 with passenger staterooms ) and max capacity 6600 (5200 lower berths).
Described by the company as its 'greenest, largest and most innovative ship yet', Iona has a 3-deck atrium at her heart and a glass-roofed 'SkyDome' by Martin Frances. Other features include 'a [world-first] gin distillery, exciting new dining, unseen entertainment concepts and unique wellbeing treats'.
MS Iona is the first British LNG-powered (by liquefied natural gas) passenger liner and has a larger capacity than P&O UK's (now 2nd-biggest) vessel mS Britannia , which can accommodate up to 5000 passengers and crew.
P&O Iona ship has a rescheduled maiden season (Northern Europe, Norwegian Fjords, Iberia and the Canaries) from Southampton UK starting in March 2021, after the company has suspended its operations until January 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-related international travel restrictions.
An as-yet-unnamed sistership will be delivered to P&O UK in December 2022.

Large-Scale Prefab: Time Lapse of a Gigantic Cruise Ship Being Built
This technique was invented under pressure, to help win a war.
In the 1940s, America commissioned crucial cargo-carrying "Liberty Ships" for the World War II effort. Hundreds of these 10,500-ton behemoths were needed, but took forever to build: The first took Kaiser Shipyards 253 days to construct. Worse, German U-Boats kept sinking them, meaning more were needed, and as the war continued an impossible order came down: Get the build time down to 105 days. A new manufacturing mindset was required.
By the end of the war, Kaiser engineer Clay Bedford* got the build time down to just 4.6 days per ship, using his radical new manufacturing method. That method was prefabrication. The ship was built in pieces, with multiple crews working simultaneously, then everything was craned into place and connected. That technique, invented under pressure, is still how massive ships like the 183,858-ton AIDAnova cruise liner are built today.
This time lapse of the AIDAnova's construction provides an eye-opening look at the process, starting with the engines. (It is crazy to me that internal combustion engines can be scaled up to this size—the first images below are of the ship's massive V-16. See the dude in the second photo for scale.)
___________________________________________
*I highly recommend reading the Liberty Ships chapter in Arthur Herman's fascinating " Freedom's Forge: How American Business Produced Victory in World War II ," a must-read for anyone interested in manufacturing revolutions. Clay Bedford was a genius.
