More About London

London is an ancient city whose history greets you at every turn. To gain a sense of its continuity, stand on Waterloo Bridge at sunset. To the east, the great globe of St. Paul's Cathedral glows golden in the fading sunlight as it has since the 17th century, still majestic amid the modern towers of glass and steel that hem it in. To the west stand the mock-medieval ramparts of Westminster, home to the "Mother of Parliaments," which has met here or hereabouts since the 1250s. Past them both snakes the swift, dark Thames, following the same course as when it flowed past the Roman settlement of Londinium nearly 2,000 years ago. If the city contained only its famous landmarks—the Tower of London, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace—it would still rank as one of the world's top cities. But London is so much more.

The heaviest tourist season runs mid-April through mid-October, with another peak around Christmas—though the tide never really ebbs. Spring is the time to see the countryside and the royal London parks and gardens at their freshest; fall to enjoy near-ideal exploring conditions. In late summer, be warned: air-conditioning is rarely found in places other than department stores, modern restaurants, hotels, and cinemas in London, and in a hot summer you'll swelter. Winter can be rather dismal, but all the theatres, concerts, and exhibitions go full speed.

It's virtually impossible to forecast London weather, but you can be fairly certain that it will not be what you expect. It's generally mild—with some savage exceptions, especially in summer. In short, be prepared for anything: layers and an umbrella are your friends.

Top Experiences

Tower of London : Iconic castle and infamous prison, the Yeoman Warders and their ravens will regale you with tales of the exploits of history that occurred within its walls. A viewing of the Crown Jewels will complete the visit.

Buckingham Palace : Official residence of the monarchy when in the city and backdrop to the famous Changing of the Guard ceremony occurring daily in the summer, and four times a week weather permitting at other times of the year at 11 a.m., subject to change.

Westminster Abbey : With over 1,000 years of history, this still functioning church houses the final resting places and memorials to many former monarchs and important figures of history such as Robert Browning, Charles Dickens, Stephen Hawking, Sir Isaac Newton and Queen Elizabeth I, to name a few.

Thames River Cruise : A sightseeing cruise through the city during day or night is a unique way to view aspects of the area only viewed by water.

London Eye : 360-degree views of the city from a glass enclosed pod circling on a large ferris wheel.

British Museum : With free entry, you can explore millions of years of human history and culture. With more than 60 galleries and rotating exhibits, you will find plenty of interest, including Egyptian culture and the Rosetta Stone, to the sculpture and pottery of the Roman Empire.

It’s free, and a great way to see some of London’s loveliest landmarks. Start at Westminster, then marvel at Big Ben and Westminster Abbey before walking along to the Southbank to Tower Bridge. Eat deli style

Once you’re shopped out in Marylebone, make for cool deli La Fromagerie for fine cheese or nibble on Indian street food at Roti Chai.

Get cultural

See some theatre in the West End. For last-minute tickets head to Leicester Square’s TKTS booth, where you can buy tickets from as little as £15. The Lion King and Matilda are fun-filled family classics, while controversial The Book of Mormon remains a crowd-pleaser.

Shangri-La London

Wake up in style at the Shangri-La London, 125 metres high. All rooms offer phenomenal city views, but there's something quite magical looking out from London's highest infinity pool.

Spoil yourself

Splash out at Spring at Somerset House where super chef Skye Gyngell serves seasonal cuisine in leafy surrounds. Expect to pay around £150-£200 for a dinner for two. Afterwards zip to the nearby Radio Rooftop bar at ME London for cocktails with a view.

London Vacations

Thanks to traditions like the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, the pageantry associated with royal family weddings, and cultural attractions such as the British Museum, vacations in London expose you to a rich tapestry of accessible opulence at every turn. Even if you've had London vacations in the past, it's unlikely that you were able to put a dent in the countless attractions that the city has to offer. So, why not visit all the heritage on the banks of the Thames again—or for the very first time? Founded by the Romans around 2,000 years ago, London is one of the most historically steeped cities in all the modern world. With over 8 million people and 300 languages spoken in the city alone, London is a true global city that welcomes all visitors with open arms. And, when you use Travelocity to book your holiday package in London, you’ll save enough money to make the Queen blush.

Major Attractions

You'll have a variety of options when it comes to hotels in London, some of which are just as historical as the surrounding sites. Dozens of iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace and Big Ben are within a short walk or public transit distance. Take a ride on the London Eye or wander through Covent Garden, a popular shopping and tourist site. Feel like taking a bit of a break? Visit the London Zoo or go for a stroll through the expansive Hyde Park. Driving in London can be hectic, though, so it's best to do some research while purchasing vacation packages in London to determine if a rental car the right option for you.

London Hotels

In a city as historically fabled as London, it’s no surprise that many of its hotels are as prestigious as the quintessentially royal properties they neighbor. So, instead of staying at a run-of-the-mill roadway inns, a room at one of these emblematic accommodations should be in order:

  • St. Ermin’s Hotel, Autograph Collection – Like a diamond set in the middle of two sapphires, St. Ermin’s is situated in the heart of Westminster right between the eponymous abbey and Buckingham Palace. The hotel’s classic architecture and antique interior design components are complemented by state-of-the-art technologies and modern amenities. After a day exploring the wonderful neighborhood, recharge your batteries with a classic British afternoon tea at the Tea Lounge at St. Ermin’s.
  • The Rembrandt – Just south of Hyde Park, and equidistant from the Natural History Museum and the world-famous Harrod’s department store, the historic Rembrandt pampers its guests in understated elegance from the moment they step foot through the lobby door. Enjoy an aromatic exfoliation or other body-rejuvenating treatment at Aquilla Spa, savor a traditional roast lunch at the Palette Restaurant, and sip a proper Pimm’s No. 1 cocktail at the 1606 Lounge Bar.
  • Sofitel London St. James – Repurposed from the former Cox’s and King’s Bank building just steps from Trafalgar Square and the National Portrait Gallery, the Sofitel is a destination in its own right. The expert therapists at the award-winning So SPA are trained in multiple exhilarating international treatments. And, the well-appointed guestrooms and Balcon restaurant are both a splendid mix of French chic and British charm. Perhaps the best display of world fusion at the Sofitel, though, is in its St. James Bar signature seasonal cocktail menu which features flavors, spirits, and mixers from around the globe.
  • The Bailey's Hotel London – Spend your London nights in a bygone time with a stay at The Bailey’s. This Victorian-era townhome has been renovated into one of the city’s most stunning luxury hotels. Detailed stonework, stained glass windows, and a sweeping lobby staircase punctuate the posh property. While its fashionable South Kensington neighborhood serves as a beacon to pleasure-seekers, business travelers will appreciate The Bailey’s proximity to the Millennium Conference Centre next door.

Festivals and Events

London is host to some of the most exciting seasonal events in the U.K.:

  • BluesFest: In November, cut a rug to the sounds of major musical acts at this music festival.
  • Bonfire Night: Be awed by the fireworks displays that light up the city sky on this night.
  • London Marathon: For the especially adventurous and fleet of feet, the London Marathon is held every April.
  • Summer Brew Fest: If you're looking to visit during the summer, you have the city’s annual beer celebration to look forward to in June.

London’s Calling

You can save a royal treasure by bundling your flight and hotel together on Travelocity. Packaging your travel and accommodations together is the best way to find a cheap vacation in London. So, if you're thinking about visiting the historical hamlet, make sure to check out Travelocity’s London package deals to make planning your trip that much simpler.

The 23 best hotels in London

Melanie Lieberman

With tens of thousands of rooms spread across London's hotels, travelers have no shortage of choices when it comes to booking a place to stay in the Big Smoke. And even once you stay at all the best hotels in London, more will join the ranks every year.

There are iconic London hotels in some of the poshest neighborhoods that have legacy and reputation on their side, and affordable hotels that prioritize communal spaces designed for mingling with others. Families might prefer something casual from one of the larger chains.

No matter what type of trip you're planning , these are some of the best hotels in London — and you can even use points at many of these properties to put a stay here within reach.

What is the best area to stay in London?

Some of the most convenient areas to stay in London for first-time travelers include West London neighborhoods such as Covent Garden, Mayfair, Holborn, Soho and Leicester Square, which are within walking distance of the city's great theaters, royal parks and palaces, and many bustling restaurants. If you are flying in or out of Heathrow Airport (LHR) , West London also puts you slightly closer to the airport, especially if you are near Paddington, the terminus of the Heathrow Express.

For travelers eager to explore new neighborhoods, there are the grittier, more creative neighborhoods of East London, including the popular enclave of Shoreditch with its world-famous Indian eateries. Alternatively, the bohemian neighborhood of Brixton, the unofficial capital of the British African-Caribbean community in London, buzzes with art, music and delicious food.

Travelers seeking a quieter and more residential stay may prefer Kensington, while areas along the south bank of the River Thames, such as Southwark, put visitors close to attractions like Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, colorful Borough Market and the Tate Modern museum.

Since making its London debut in 2013, the Rosewood has transformed an Edwardian belle epoque mansion on High Holborn into one of the most in-demand luxury hotels in the city.

Italian marble is abundant here, from the grand seven-story staircase coiling around the interior of the hotel to the bathrooms in the guest rooms and suites. Other elegant touches throughout the rooms and suites include decorative wainscoting and rich textiles befitting a London hotel, like tweed chairs with pintuck details.

Grab a cocktail at the gentlemen's club-inspired Scarfes Bar, a cozy spot with more than 1,000 antique books and live jazz anchored by a roaring fireplace, or any of the Rosewood's multiple drinking and dining venues.

Rates at the Rosewood London start at around 616 British pounds ($758) per night.

It's no surprise that this self-described "super boutique hotel" punches above its weight with pops of color, staff uniforms worthy of a stage production, theatrical busts and bathroom vanities reminiscent of backstage dressing rooms. After all, The Londoner, which debuted in 2021, is in the center of London's bustling entertainment district, just steps from Piccadilly Circus and the city's famous West End theaters.

Behind colorful doors with crystal knobs are unusually spacious rooms in a city known for economizing square footage. Of note are the oversize bathrooms with separate water closets for Toto bidets and rainfall showers clad in colorful, gleaming tiles.

But it's the hotel's clublike venues that really stand out. Guests have access to an exclusive lounge — no outsiders allowed — that serves complimentary light bites and beverages throughout the day. Or, mingle with the locals at 8, the rooftop bar serving Japanese-inspired cocktails. You might even catch live music at the lobby-level Champagne bar, The Stage.

Rates at The Londoner start at around 423 British pounds ($517) per night.

In a city known for astronomically expensive hotel rates, The Hoxton provides a more affordable stay without sacrificing style.

The Hoxton, Shoreditch was the brand's first property, which reclaimed a parking lot in the bustling East London neighborhood. It paved the way for a series of innovative hotels that focus on large, communal public spaces and compact rooms that offer everything travelers need but few of the extra services that many can live without.

For travelers who don't mind squeezing in to save money, the Hoxton's "Shoebox" rooms offer tight quarters (at the Shoreditch property, from 130 square feet) with a double bed and a small, monochrome tiled bathroom.

It's a leap up from a hostel stay, but guests will certainly be inspired to join the locals in the cozy sitting areas in the lobby or its two restaurants: the Hoxton Grill and Llama Inn.

What you won't find is a gym or a spa, but the lobby staff will provide you with a discounted pass to a nearby fitness center.

Rates at The Hoxton, Shoreditch , can be found from 219 British pounds ($268) per night.

Multicolored marbles, dignified terra cotta tiles, stained-glass windows and ornate balustrades are a few of the elegant details that make the Kimpton Fitzroy London feel more like a regal estate than a chain hotel.

Revered architect Charles Fitzroy Doll, who worked on the dining room of the RMS Titanic (yes, that Titanic), designed this architectural masterpiece.

Even in the rooms, thoughtful touches like upholstered canopy beds, rotary-style phones the color of the city's iconic double-decker buses, picture-frame wainscoting and marble bathrooms make guests at the Kimpton Fitzroy feel like dignitaries visiting London for royal affairs.

Breakfast here is casual, with simple breakfast sandwiches, eggs Benedict and pancakes at Galvin Bar & Grill. Later, you can order a cocktail at Fitz's and sip it on a scalloped velour sofa beneath a twinkling disco ball or grab a seat in a leather armchair by the mantle.

In addition to the bold design, which doesn't shy away from its grandeur, the Kimpton Fitzroy stands out as one of the best hotels in London because it offers Kimpton loyalists all the perks travelers have come to love about the brand: complimentary social hours, pet-friendly policies and Raleigh bikes you can use for free during your stay to explore the city.

Rates at the Kimpton Fitzroy London start at 321 British pounds ($392) or 56,000 IHG One Rewards points per night.

From its enviable address on Park Lane, the JW Marriott Grosvenor House puts guests within walking distance of London's most iconic sites and attractions, including Hyde Park and Buckingham Palace.

Inside, the JW Marriott — the former home of the dukes of Westminster and Gloucester — delivers a classic hotel aesthetic consistent with the JW brand, with plenty of dark wood accents contrasted with neutral hues, light marbles and floral prints evocative of Hyde Park at the cusp of spring or autumn.

Distinctly British dining experiences (such as afternoon tea and evening canapes) are available to guests who have executive lounge access, and the nod to traditional hotel experiences continues at the JW Steakhouse, which sets the tone with dark wood paneling, cast-iron crockery and black-and-white photographs.

Or, enjoy live piano music while tucking into afternoon tea (open-face sandwiches with smoked Scottish salmon, buttermilk scones, treacles, tarts and lemon possets) at The Park Room, which has an English home aesthetic elevated by white tablecloths and jewel-tone velvet booths.

Rates at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House start at around 380 British pounds ($465) or 52,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Playing on the area's affinity for street art, the Andaz Liverpool Street, which has undergone a series of renovations and refreshes, brings splashes of color and saturated velvet furnishings to this Liverpool Street mainstay (it's been a hotel since the Great Eastern Hotel opened in this red-brick landmark in 1884).

The lobby has a distinct sense of movement, home to a funky bar with steamer trunks, exposed brick and gleaming gold accents.

The artistic flourishes continue in the guest rooms, where you might find the modern furniture accented by pops of fuchsia. Whether you book an entry-level room or one of the designer suites, expect amenities such as Nespresso machines, yukata robes and the brand's signature complimentary minibars.

When it's time to eat, head to Lady Abercorn's for a whimsical British pub experience, including dishes like Punjabi mutton curry, bangers and mash with sage-and-onion gravy and — what else — fish and chips with tartar sauce and minted peas.

Rates for the Andaz Liverpool Street start at 268 British pounds ($328) or 17,000 World of Hyatt points per night.

Nothing short of a London legend, this renowned art deco hotel is often hailed as the first luxury hotel in England. Even its bars and restaurants are attractions in their own right, such as the Thames Foyer, with its gazebo at the center where pianists might play tunes while guests sip tea beneath the atrium's glass dome.

Or perhaps you've seen images of the black-and-gold Beaufort Bar, which serves vintage Champagnes to well-heeled guests, or the glitzy American Bar, where travelers tipple vintage cocktails while listening to live jazz.

When it's time to bed down, choose from Edwardian or art deco-inspired rooms, most of which offer views of the River Thames or the city. Best of all, you can now use Accor points to offset the cost of a stay at this Fairmont-managed hotel — and don't forget that Capital One miles transfer to ALL — Accor Live Limitless.

Rates at The Savoy start at 680 British pounds ($827) per night.

Having served such esteemed guests as Napoleon III and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle since opening its doors in the 19th century, it's no surprise this luxury hotel has such an impressive reputation.

Today, The Langham continues to exude British elegance, with upholstered headboards, elegant wood furnishings and wainscoting in the accommodations.

Splurge on an executive room or suite for access to the hotel's club, where you can sip glasses of Taittinger Champagne while nibbling on canapes designed by chef Michel Roux Jr., of London's two-Michelin-starred Le Gavroche.

Of course, you can always visit the Langham's other celebrated dining and drinking venues, including Artesian, with Japanese influences in the pagoda-inspired bar and on the menu. Afternoon tea in the spectacular Palm Court is a particularly decadent and quintessentially British delight.

Check out the Langham's fitness and wellness offerings, including the 16-meter swimming pool in a former bank vault.

Rates at The Langham London start at 405 British pounds ($495) per night.

Another art deco landmark with a litany of celebrities and heads of state in its guest book (among them Audrey Hepburn, Queen Victoria and Kate Moss), Claridge's doesn't refresh its interiors with every passing design trend.

Instead, one of London's most iconic hotels stays true to its roots with decor such as lacquered wood headboards, shagreen lamps, a cozy neutral palette and thoughtfully appointed marble bathrooms you won't want to leave, thanks to Toto water closets, the brand's namesake products and heated mirrors (so you'll never lose your reflection in the steam).

Beneath a 1930s Rene Lalique glass panel, you can elbow up to the black-marble horseshoe bar at The Fumoir, which specializes in vintage spirits served from Lalique decanters. Or, retreat to The Painter's Room, a study in Provencal style marked by a stained-glass mirror and a striking blush-colored marble bar that opened to much-deserved fanfare in 2021.

Rates at Claridge's start at 919 British pounds ($1,124) per night.

The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park straddles London's Knightsbridge and Hyde Park neighborhoods, placing travelers at the nexus of London's poshest addresses.

While here, take advantage of the hotel's celebrated culinary program, including Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, which has two Michelin stars. Here, Blumenthal plays with historic British dishes, such as scallop frumenty (circa 1390) and powdered duck breast (circa 1670), with blackberry tarts (circa 1800) and brown bread ice cream (circa 1808) leading the dessert menu.

There's also The Aubrey, an outpost of Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong's Japanese izakaya experience that's sure to delight frequent jet-setters, the jewel box-like Rosebery (for afternoon tea and Champagne cocktails) and the namesake Mandarin Bar, anchored by a catwalk-style bar and filled with eye-catching design elements by Adam D. Tihany.

Designer Joyce Wang led the guest room refresh, incorporating Hyde Park-inspired natural elements and art deco flourishes such as custom onyx chandeliers, leather-topped desks and Volakas marble bathrooms stocked with Diptyque products.

Rates at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park start at 840 British pounds ($1,028) per night.

For travelers who crave color, texture and individuality, few hotels compete with Ham Yard Hotel, a Soho property from Firmdale Hotels that turns a hand-crafted aesthetic into unquestionable luxury.

The 91 rooms and suites were individually designed by Kit Kemp and channel an "urban village" vibe through an array of patterns and prints — expect a riot of seersucker or chevron, ikats or florals, jacquard or stripes. All rooms, though, have expansive floor-to-ceiling windows and granite bathrooms with oak accents.

The carefully orchestrated cacophony of color and texture continues in the public spaces and restaurant, Ham Yard Bar & Restaurant, where travelers might sample a smoked haddock Scotch egg with butter crab curry or share a juicy chateaubriand with friends. If you're treated to a sunny London day, dine in the heated courtyard.

Or, head to the fourth-floor roof garden, where you might spot the herbs and vegetables that will season your dinner. Other unusual amenities and facilities include the Croc bowling alley, which dates to the 1950s and will make you forget every preconceived notion you have about bowling with its Howard Hodgkin artworks and silver baby grand piano.

Rates at the Ham Yard Hotel start at 536 British pounds ($659) per night.

If you remember seeing The Ritz in "Notting Hill" starring Julia Roberts, you'll recall the hotel has main character energy.

With its Michelin stars, majestic marble columns, gilded chandeliers and museumworthy frescoes, the eponymous restaurant is one of the many alluring amenities at The Ritz London. Here, you reserve dinner dances led by full bands that hark back to a simpler era.

Lean into the over-the-top luxury by reserving a spot for afternoon tea in the hotel's former ballroom to sample teas curated by tea master Giandomenico Scanu and nibble on tiered towers of pastries and cakes.

The rooms are designed with the sort of romantic aesthetic you'd expect to find in the manor of a duchess — marble bathrooms, monogrammed linens and gold-and-marble mantles. You might find a television tucked in the corner, but guest rooms and suites at the Ritz are meant to evoke far less modern moments in London.

Rates at The Ritz London start at 753 British pounds ($921) per night.

The former Curtain boutique hotel has been transformed by Accor into the 120-room Mondrian Shoreditch London , an unfussy retreat with small rooms, reasonable rates and smart design touches, such as retro Marshall radios and cozy leather sofas.

Guests love the marble showers, which double as steam rooms, and the design details that nod to the neighborhood (exposed brick, Studio Graphite artworks).

When it's time to eat and drink, head to Laurel's on the Roof for California-influenced cuisine any time of year, thanks to the retractable glass roof, or dip down to Bibo for tapas created by chef Dani Garcia of Michelin acclaim. Save room for sweets: a chocolate mousse for two and a glass of Pedro Ximenez dessert wine.

One of the most-loved amenities is the beautiful (albeit tiny) mosaic-bottomed heated swimming pool on the roof, which guests can access until midday. There's also an elegant fitness center reminiscent of old-school athletic clubs with Technogym equipment and Peloton bikes.

Rates at the Mondrian Shoreditch London start at 271 British pounds ($338) per night.

Warm, welcoming and modern accommodations capture both the spirit of 21st-century London and the Four Seasons brand — particularly if you book a room with a terrace or a suite with a fireplace.

It's all about the amenities at the 196-key Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane, including the private chauffeured ride in a Bentley anywhere within 2 miles of the hotel, plus twice-daily housekeeping when many hotels are doing away with the service altogether.

You can even sightsee while squeezing in your workout on the 10th-floor gym, which offers views of Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye observation wheel in the distance, or while waiting for your massage at the rooftop spa.

Rates at the Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane start at 761 British pounds ($931) per night.

With an exterior harking back to the hotel's origin as a duo of houses belonging to the Duke of Westminster, you might not expect the organic blend of classic design with contemporary lines.

Even the most basic rooms have curvaceous dark-wood writing desks and soothing color schemes, as well as marble bathrooms with bathtub televisions for late-night soaks with your favorite show. The modern amenities continue with Dyson hair dryers and Bang & Olufsen speakers.

But it's the food and beverage program that lands The Connaught on best-of lists time and time again. The Connaught Grill is now helmed by chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and the only thing more impressive than the exquisite woodwork is the parade of dishes coming from the wood-burning grill.

There's also the colorful, light-filled Jean-Georges at The Connaught (perfect for people watching) and gauzy Red Room, which appears like a reverie behind a velvet curtain separating it from the Champagne Room.

Of course, guests can also book a table at Helene Darroze at The Connaught, the hotel's three-Michelin-starred restaurant with sumptuous leathers, velvets, hand-crafted wood furnishings and seasonal tasting menus.

Rates at The Connaught start at 929 British pounds ($1,137) per night.

While West London is a solid destination choice for first-time visitors, there are many attractions in the east of London, too.

Intercontinental London — The O2 enjoys stunning views of the River Thames and overlooks the 20,000-seat O2 arena, one of the United Kingdom's largest indoor spaces with past performances from the likes of Adele, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Beyonce and Bon Jovi. Nearby, you'll find the IFS Cloud Cable Car, the ExCeL London convention and exhibition space, and London City Airport (LCY), which is much closer to Central London than Heathrow Airport (LHR). Many major financial institutions are also headquartered at Canary Wharf, a stone's throw from this hotel.

Rooms feature plenty of natural light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, and the granite bathrooms have a separate bathtub and walk-in shower, and signature Agraria toiletries.

Dining options include Kinaara, the hotel's award-winning Indian fine-dining restaurant, with options like Keralan crispy duck with tamarind, Indian Ocean king prawns with black garlic chutney and fiery lamb curry simmered in cipollini onions, perfect for an early dinner before a show at the O2. The hotel's Meridian Lounge serves quintessentially British afternoon tea and hand-crafted cocktails.

Rates at Intercontinental London — The O2 start at about 249 British pounds ($300) or 44,000 IHG One Rewards points per night.

Rooms at this Rocco Forte hotel are whimsical and eclectic; no two are exactly the same, though they all mix subtle patterns and textures to great effect.

Like the rooms, the restaurants at Brown's effortlessly blend classic ingredients and style with contemporary, eccentric flourishes.

Charlie's, helmed by executive chef Adam Byatt, serves British dishes from silver trolleys beneath coffered ceilings while gleaming wood walls and illustrative wallpaper with botanicals and birds give the space personality and warmth. At The Drawing Room, which employs similar design duologies, guests can enjoy a leisurely afternoon tea.

Brown's Hotel is also a popular pick for families with young children who don't want to sacrifice an iota of luxury: Easy-to-book interconnecting rooms and family suites afford families generous floor plans and amenities that will keep the little ones entertained.

With the Rocco Forte Kids program, you might find a stylish play tent set up in your room or suite upon arrival, plus a host of treats and extras specifically for the youngest members of your family (including Albemarle, an oak-wood monkey toy to play with for the duration of the stay).

Rates at Brown's Hotel start at 765 British pounds (about $935) per night.

Unmistakable vestiges of designer Ian Schrager are all over The London Edition , from the walnut wood-paneled walls and faux fur throws in the rooms to the members club-inspired Punch Room with a wide-ranging sonic landscape that, occasionally, includes live music.

But you won't mistake The London Edition for a night at New York's bygone Studio 54. This hotel is decidedly British — particularly Berners Tavern, the moody restaurant with hundreds of framed photographs and paintings on the walls and an ornately carved plaster ceiling. Grab a seat at the pewter-topped bar for cocktails worth crossing the Atlantic for.

Rates at The London Edition start at around 398 British pounds ($486) or 55,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Presiding over Hyde Park is The Dorchester, a hotel dating back to 1931 that is preparing to emerge from a significant renovation.

Light, airy design elements are emphasized throughout the rooms, suites and public areas, nodding to the city's lush parks (think: dusty rose, pale sage and heather blue), bringing brightness and femininity into the historic property.

Guests will discover entirely new spaces, too, including a flower and pastry shop showcasing the talents of in-house florist Philip Hammond and pastry chef Michael Kwan. There's also a new contemporary art collection to explore and Vesper Bar, a glowing, glamorous space that replaces the former watering hole known as The Bar.

Not all of The Dorchester's well-loved institutions are being overhauled or replaced, however. Travelers can still book a table at Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester, which maintains three Michelin stars.

China Tang continues to serve traditional dim sum in a dazzling art deco space with Eastern influences. Chef Tom Booton, known for kick-starting his culinary career at 15, is the youngest-ever chef of the revamped The Grill.

Rates at The Dorchester start at 899 British pounds ($1,099) per night.

If you're familiar with Dukes, you might be an Ian Fleming fan — or a diehard anglophile. Either way, this elegant property in quiet St. James's is all about the details. Marble bathrooms are stocked with fragrant Penhaligon's toiletries; most have deep soaking tubs.

At the historic Dukes Bar, you can sip world-famous martinis poured tableside while waiting for a Bond villain to amble over to one of the deep-blue velvet club chairs. All-day dining is served at GBR — Great British Restaurant — a beautifully mirrored space serving a variety of steaks, Yorkshire chicken, Cumbrian lamb neck and more.

But for many travelers, the hotel's quiet address in Mayfair truly sets it apart — a timeless retreat you can adjourn to beneath a Union Jack flag for a final martini before drifting back to your guest room or suite.

Rates at Dukes London start at 351 British pounds ($488) per night.

Housed in a former — you guessed it — fire station, this hotel is the brainchild of celebrated hotelier Andre Balazs. Even though it opened in 2014, the hard-to-book tables at its eponymous restaurant and limited room count ensure the hotel is still one of the hottest spots in London.

Also keeping the heat level high are its en suite gas fireplaces (most rooms have them) and heated bathroom floors. Cozy corner banquettes and armchairs in the room are upstaged only by the gleaming mahogany-paneled headboards.

But since the hotel holds tables specifically for its guests, you won't want to waste too much time sitting around your room. Despite the price tag and the acclaim, trust us and order the black truffle wood-fired pizza with blue cheese, taleggio, Parmesan and pecorino, plus the rib-eye steak.

Rates at Chiltern Firehouse start at 651 British pounds ($760) per night.

Since its debut in 2021, the NoMad London has caught the attention of hotel industry insiders and travelers with its striking public spaces — particularly the eponymous restaurant housed in a multistory glass atrium.

The answer to the chartreuse-hued banquettes and cascading foliage in the conservatory-style restaurant is the deep red velvet-and-leather boudoir-inspired library replete with highbrow texts that nod to the transatlantic love affair between New York City and London.

The frenzy of opulent design decisions continues in the guest rooms, where glittering mosaic-tiled bathrooms with gold fixtures complement the embossed leather headboards and damask-print textiles.

For drinks, head to Side Hustle, where Mexican-influenced cocktails and plates take center stage. Don't miss the tequila mai tais served in skulls and topped with crowns of pineapple leaves and citrus slices.

Rates at the NoMad London start at 373 British pounds ($456) per night.

London’s top attractions

The London Eye

1.  The London Eye

  • Things to do
  • Event spaces

What is it? Much like the Millenium Dome – or, as it's known to those who don’t remember the twentieth century, the O2 Arena – the London Eye was built to celebrate the year 2000. Since then, the Eye has been a resounding success and it’s hard to picture London’s skyline without it. It rarely ever comes to a stop, so you won’t be standing on the ceremony when you get on. Before you know it, you’re halfway into the sky and taking in sweeping vistas of the city.

Why go? The view, obviously.

Shrek’s Adventure! London

2.  Shrek’s Adventure! London

  • Theme parks

What is it? An interactive tour that starts with a breathtaking 4D ride through the sky before you crash-land near a certain ogre’s swamp and find yourself having to flee from the wicked Rumpelstiltskin. You’ll encounter a few favourite characters while you take on different missions, such as liberating Pinocchio from the Wheel of Torture and cooking up some spells with the Muffin Man.

Why go? To have a giggle on a whirlwind trip to Far, Far Away.

Madame Tussauds

3.  Madame Tussauds

What is it? In 1802 Marie Tussaud made her waxwork debut in the capital (32 years after she founded the show in Paris). By 1884 she decided to lay down permanent roots in Marylebone and she’s been there ever since (well, her legacy at least). Visitors to Madame Tussauds today will find over 150 lifelike models including contemporary stars like Drake and Dua Lipa and historic icons like Einstein and Marilyn Monroe. Elsewhere The King stands proudly on the Royal Balcony and stars like the Marvel cast have their own Hall of Heroes.

Why go? To snap a selfie with all the famous faces. Instagram, incoming.

The View from the Shard

4.  The View from the Shard

  • Towers and viewpoints
  • London Bridge

What is it?  The capital's tallest tower, having joined London's skyline in 2012.  Measuring 310 metres, The Shard was built with everything in mind: offices, homes, hotels, bars, restaurants and, of course, the alluring viewing platform. From the highest point, the public are allowed access (floors 69-72) you get stunning 360-degree views of the city. There’s a silent disco on selected Saturday nights and other events, such as gigs and gin tastings throughout the year.

Why go? The floor-to-ceiling windows allow exceptional views out across the capital, especially on a clear day.

The London Dungeon

5.  The London Dungeon

What is it?  A tour of London’s nastiest historical moments, with gory stories retold with humour, gooey props and gruesomely costumed actors. You can board a traitor’s boat to the Tower of London, dash through the streets of Whitechapel in pursuit of Jack the Ripper and glimpse plague London.

Why go?   Gore-seekers can ride a recreation of The Death Express, a line which carried the deceased to their final resting place in Surrey.

Up at The O2

6.  Up at The O2

  • Sightseeing
  • Greenwich Peninsula

What is it? Ever wondered what London looks like from 53 metres above North Greenwich? Find out with a ticket for Up at The O2 where you can choose from Daytime, Sunset and Twilight climbs. The ultimate AAA pass gains you access to the roof, where you’ll be able to see across the capital, spotting famous sites like the Olympic Park, Thames Barrier, The Shard and Canary Wharf.

Why go? For an incredible 360-degree view – and that adorable climbing onesie.

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

7.  Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

  • Sport and fitness
  • Parks and gardens
  • Olympic Park

Remember the London Olympics in 2012? Feels like a lifetime ago – and a very different time – but we were promised a legacy and, if the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is the yardstick, we got one. The buildings and all that parkland are now one of London’s best attractions, drawing swathes of tourists and Londoners every year. The  London Stadium  (host to big concerts with headliners like The Weeknd and West Ham FC as well as various athletics championships). The southern section of the park is home to all the stunning parkland, including children's play areas, four walking trails, a couple of dozen public artworks, plus the attraction of ascending the remarkable  ArcelorMittal Orbit . Make sure you check out foodie hot spots like  Hackney Bridge food market  and the award-winning floating restaurant  Barge East . It continues to honour its reputation for state-of-the-art sporting venues – from the  Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre  as well as the Zaha Hadid-designed  London Aquatics Centre , which is open for public swimming and diving sessions, followed by the VeloPark, home to road, track, BMX and mountain biking. There’s more to come too. Heard of East Bank? Set to be London’s newest cultural quarter with world-class experiences from BBC, Sadler’s Wells, UAL’s London College of Fashion, University College London and the V&A East. In short: a lot of great stuff to explore.

Westminster Abbey

8.  Westminster Abbey

  • Religious buildings and sites
  • Westminster

What is it? Like the Pantheon Crypt in Paris, where you can see the tombs and memorials of great figures from history, Westminster Abbey is a popular attraction to peruse the graves, tablets, busts and stone dedications. In fact, seventeen monarchs are buried here, along with dukes, countesses and history’s ‘celebs’ (Think Darwin, Dickens and Hardy). Founded by Benedictine monks in 960 AD, there have also been 16 royal weddings here and every single British coronation has taken place within the Abbey's walls since 1066.

Why go? To see Gothic grandeur in all its splendour.

Buckingham Palace

9.  Buckingham Palace

What is it? A chance to see world-famous art, glimpse regal opulence and get inside HM’s headquarters. Tourists and locals alike know the façade of Buckingham Palace, which stands at the end of The Mall. But it was only in 1913 that this addition was made, by King George V and Queen Mary. Before that, in 1633, the palace wasn’t even royal – it belonged to Lord Goring, who was forced to hand over ownership to the Royal Family (under King George III) due to a flaw in his contract. Poor chap.

Why go? To snoop around the most famous royal residence in the world.

Hampton Court Palace

10.  Hampton Court Palace

  • Historic buildings and sites

What is it? A resplendent palace with plush grounds on the edge of south west London. From the Tudor indoor tennis court to the Royal Maze, from the King’s private loo to the Magic Garden adventure playground, there’s something here for all ages. History buffs and art enthusiasts should purchase a ticket for the Palace and Gardens; those with little ones in tow will appreciate the Magic Garden and Maze ticket. Make sure you keep an eye on the site for their seasonal opening times.

Why go? To get lost in the Royal Maze.

The Houses of Parliament

11.  The Houses of Parliament

What is it? The seat of British democracy. Take an audio tour through the House of Lords and House of Commons to bring the building to life. It takes around 90 minutes and features leading parliamentary figures such as Mr Speaker and Black Rod.

Why go? For a dazzling combo of history, politics and architecture.

St Paul’s Cathedral

12.  St Paul’s Cathedral

What is it? Iconic as St Paul’s may be, the cathedral as we know it today is in fact version six, at least. Mark five was razed to the ground by the Great Fire of London in 1666, mark three was also destroyed by fire, in 1087, and mark four fell to ruins under Henry VIII’s leadership. Thankfully Sir Christopher Wren’s design, which was completed in 1708, survived 12 monarchs and two world wars, notably the German Blitz of WWII. If you’ve paid for the main admission you’ll be treated to an introductory talk before being taken on a 90-minute tour.

Why go? To test your hearing in the Whispering Gallery.

Afternoon tea at the Ritz

13.  Afternoon tea at the Ritz

  • Restaurants
  • price 3 of 4

What is it? An occasion to enjoy finely cut sandwiches, fresh cakes and the tinkling of shiny silver teapots in the gold and white splendour of the Ritz Hotel’s former Ballroom. It’s so popular that you can book sittings from 11.30am to 7.30pm every day – sure, it’s not strictly the afternoon, but it’s all accompanied by the delicate sounds of a pianist, harpist or string quartet.

Why go?  For the unlimited scones and sandwiches.

Tower Bridge

14.  Tower Bridge

  • Tower Bridge

What is it? There’s more to this ornate Victorian bridge than something cool to look at: you can actually venture inside. Check out the engine rooms with their whirring wheels and pistons, then head up to the glass-floored viewing platform above the draw bridge, where you can delve into this magnificent structure's story.

Why go?  Time it right and you'll see the bridge rising up to let paddle steamers and barges through. Want to know a fun fact? A full schedule of bridge lift times is available on their website .

Kensington Palace

15.  Kensington Palace

What is it? Where William, Kate and the kids hang their hats. This tourist attraction has a chic style: it played host to the most fashionable salons in Georgian times, was home to Queen Victoria in her youth, then sassy Princess Margaret and then classy Princess Diana. Now the main palace is a pretty visitor magnet with tranquil gardens to wander.

Why go? To be blown away by the outfits in the ‘Royal Style in the Making’ exhibition.

Big Ben

16.  Big Ben

TOURS SUSPENDED TEMPORARILY

What is it?  Big Ben is the nickname of the Great Bell inside Westminster’s iconic clock tower, but even locals think ‘Big Ben’ when they see the Elizabeth Tower. You can’t get inside for a tour due to maintenance work but you’re a minute away from the river, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey here, so it’s an easy visit.

Why go?  To see the world's most celebrated clock face to face.

Wembley Stadium

17.  Wembley Stadium

What is it? The venue where England won the World Cup in 1966, and the Lionesses won the Euros in 2022. Wembley still has a magic about it, even when you don’t have a ticket for a match or a rock concert. Take the tour and you’ll get to walk down the players’ tunnel and climb the 107 Trophy Winner’s steps, plus, with the use of 360-degree video, experience the electric atmosphere at some of the stadium’s biggest events.

Why go?  To peek  behind the scenes and sense that Cup Final magic.

The National Gallery

18.  The National Gallery

  • Trafalgar Square

What is it? A huge art museum right on Trafalgar Square that’s free to enter. Perfect, whether you’ve got ten minutes in your lunch break to check out Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ or time to wander the entire collection of Western European paintings from the thirteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Check out the Friday Lates for after-hours access to exhibitions, creative workshops and life drawing sessions.

Why go? To be swaddled in artistic greatness.

Churchill War Rooms

19.  Churchill War Rooms

What is it? A secret, secure bunker, tucked behind Downing Street and Parliament Square, where Churchill and his cabinet could monitor how World War II was going, receive intelligence and give orders. It’s the little details that give the biggest impression, from a daily-updated weather noticeboard to the scratch marks on Churchill’s chair (caused by his ring on a stressed day).

Why go? For history lovers to see the rooms just as they were left after 1945.

National Portrait Gallery

20.  National Portrait Gallery

  • Charing Cross Road

What is it? Just around the corner from The National Gallery, this is the home of a stunning collection of portraits, from paintings to photography, capturing the essence of notable royalty, celebrities and our enduring fascination with the human face. The permanent collection is free to visit, with ticketed special exhibitions.

Why go? To wander among the great and good.

Thames RIB Experience

21.  Thames RIB Experience

  • Victoria Embankment

What is it? A high-speed ‘rigid inflatable boat’ that will have you zooming up and down the river. If you want to ramp up the excitement on the Thames – the kind that would make 007 proud – hop aboard the RIB to travel at speeds of around 35 knots (roughly 40 mph).

Why go? Because it’s the most thrilling way for adrenaline junkies to see the sights.

National Theatre

22.  National Theatre

  • Public and national theatres

What is it? Only the greatest theatre in the world (well, we would argue so, anyway). Take your pick of entertainment from the three theatres, and if you’ve got time to kill pre- or post-performance, take a seat at one of the various bars or restaurants.

Why go?  To witness shows that champion rising talents and showcase big-name stars.

Royal Albert Hall

23.  Royal Albert Hall

  • Music venues
  • South Kensington

What is it?  Across the road from the ornate golden memorial statue of Prince Albert is another dedication. The construction of Royal Albert Hall was ordered by Queen Victoria and named after her late husband. Since its completion, the hall has hosted music and theatre and continues to do so to this day – most famously the Proms.

Why go? To experience the dazzling Victorian opulence.

Tower of London

24.  Tower of London

What is it? O ne of the capital’s best and most well-known historical attractions.  The Tower of London offers wonderful architecture, gruesome stories, hands-on activities for younger visitors, costumed actors and guides, and worryingly confident ravens.

Why go? To get an eyeful of the Crown Jewels.

Royal Opera House

25.  Royal Opera House

  • Classical and opera
  • Covent Garden

What is it? Covent Garden’s grand old opera house. You don’t have to be super-rich to get in on the action – there are reductions for students, senior citizens and those on credits, plus regular ticket offers for all. Why go? To see a right royal opera or ballet performance.

Why go? For a breath of fresh air in the busy city.

Shakespeare’s Globe

27.  Shakespeare’s Globe

What is it? A painstakingly accurate recreation of the kind of theatre Shakespeare would have written all his plays for. If you’ve never been, book groundling tickets and stand in the open-air pit like you’re at a rock festival. It makes Bard’s poetry seem a lot less like homework and a lot more like first-rate drama.

Why go? For a raucous, interactive take on  theatre.

Somerset House

28.  Somerset House

What is it? An elegant eighteenth-century landmark and cultural hub on the north side of Waterloo Bridge that hosts several art exhibitions and events at a time, incorporating the Courtauld Gallery and temporary exhibitions in the Embankment Galleries. Why go?  For some of the best art and architecture London has to offer.

Kew Palace

30.  Kew Palace

What is it? The favoured residence of George III looks more like a massive, ornate biscuit tin than the glittering home of a royal. Why go? To discover an often-forgotten treasure.

Cutty Sark

31.  Cutty Sark

  • Ships and boats

Why go? To finally get your mitts on a flagon of Butterbeer.

Why go? For studious research or to geek out on paper-based artefacts.

The British Museum

Hyde Park

41.  Hyde Park

What is it? A massive central London park that’s easy to take for granted. Wander into Hyde Park’s vast greenery and eventually, you get to the Serpentine lake, where you can take a dip, go boating, board a solar-powered ferry (in summer) or eat pizza by the water. Why go? Because life’s more fun if you stop for a stroll, a bike ride or a picnic.

Highgate Cemetery

What is it?  A beautiful, crumbling north London cemetery full of overgrown paths that will lead you to several Grade II-listed catacombs and a number of famous remains, including poet Christina Rossetti, architect Sir Lawrence Weaver and philosopher Karl Marx. 48.  St James’s Park

The two islands in its lake are home to wildlife and there’s the Princess Diana Memorial Walk to follow if you fancy some gentle exercise.

The Fashion Person's Guide to the Coolest Places to Stay, Dine, Shop, and Go in London

London images

Welcome to Who What Wear Travels , a series of curated guides to destinations the fashion set loves. Consider this your download on everything from the chicest stays to the most memorable meals to the perfect travel wardrobe, all vetted by stylish locals and well-traveled fashion folks.

If you have any interest in fashion, chances are you've been to London, know someone who was just there, or want to go. It's one of Europe's biggest, most bustling cities, and one of the world's major fashion capitals. And like its fellow fashion capitals, there's always something new to see and do. There's so much, in fact, that it's hard to know where to start.

The times I've visited London, I've felt like I barely even scratched the surface of the sprawling city with all of its unique neighborhoods. When I speak to people about London, the consensus is clear: There's something for everyone, and if you don't gel with a certain neighborhood, there are plenty of others to choose from. Influencer Lizzy Hadfield summed it up best, telling me, "Each borough is like its own little city. It’s a sprawling city, and people who live here tend to really stick to the area they live in. And every area has so much to offer: great restaurants, shops, galleries. You could have an incredible London experience without setting foot in Central London once."

Speaking to the appeal of London, NET-A-PORTER Market Director Libby Page said, "Whilst London has a unified identity, I love that the scene and style can vary so much depending on where you are and what you are looking for. Almost every area has something interesting to offer; big or small, there are hidden gems all over. You should visit for the architecture, the food, the parks, and the markets."

WWW Travels Tip: The general consensus is that summer is the best time visit London, given its unpredictable weather. Hadfield advises walking as much as you can and exploring the many side streets, but for longer distances, take the Tube.

To find out everything there is to know about visiting London, I enlisted some of the chicest in-the-know Londoners one could hope for. I wanted to go beyond the obvious tourist destinations such as The London Eye and Big Ben and tell you about the spots locals recommend. You're in good hands with their advice and recommendations.

Libby Page is NET-A-PORTER's market director (a role that bridges content and commerce), so you already know that her taste is impeccable. Originally from Wiltshire in the English countryside, Page was drawn to London by the fashion, and she touts the vibrancy, the community, the art, creativity, and importantly, the restaurants as what she loves most about it.

Next up is influencer Lizzy Hadfield . She is originally from Leeds, England, and now splits her time between London and NYC. Hadfield says that London is "a city of saying yes to people and new experiences" and it has hugely influenced her personal style in terms of how practical she dresses.

Remy Farrell is one of our own. As Who What Wear UK's fashion editor, she has her finger on the pulse of what's cool in London at any given moment. She originally hails from the north of England and calls London "a cultural melting pot unlike any other." She's an expert when it comes to seeking out the city's hidden gems.

One of the best hotels in ritzy Notting Hill is The Laslett , a favorite of Page. She recommends the boutique hotel for "a short stay over the weekend if you want to experience Portobello Market and dine in some of London's best restaurants." Fittingly for Notting Hill, The Laslett is made up of five Victorian townhouses. Inside, you'll find vintage furniture and interesting artwork throughout the hotel. It boasts a library, a spa, The Henderson Bar and Kitchen, and a lovely year-round terrace.

Simply put, Broadwick Soho is a luxurious feast for the eyes in one of Central London's most bustling neighborhoods. A newbie on the London hotel scene, it opened late 2023. The hotel's designer, Martin Brudnizki, describes it as "Studio 54 meets your eccentric godmother's Soho townhouse." The design of the hotel is eclectic and glamorous, so if you want a hotel with tons of personality in one of the most fun, history-rich pockets on London, this is the place. The restaurant Dear Jackie and three bars throughout the hotel are just as opulent and chic as you'd imagine.

WWW Travels Tip: The coast is just two hours away, so hop on a train for a quick getaway to some of the UK's most charming coastal towns.

Also in Central London (Fitzrovia, to be exact) is the sleek London Edition , a fashion person's favorite no matter what city they're in. The rooms are modern and minimal, with oak-paneled walls that are meant to resemble the interior of a luxury yacht. Farrell shared her firsthand experience of the hotel, telling me, "If you're looking for convenience, The London Edition is in the thick of the centre and is home to one of my favourite breakfast and dinner spots, The Berners Tavern. It is on the pricier end, but the rooms are akin to miniature chalets, complete with fluffy blankets and Le Labo–stocked bathrooms, making them feel like a vacation in themselves." If you want to stay somewhere exciting, sceney, and glamorous, you can't go wrong with this spot.

More stays to jot down: Page also recommends the perennial hot spot Chiltern Firehouse in peaceful Marylebone. The Standard in trendy Kings Cross with its quirky, retro-inspired interiors is a favorite of Farrell. Another newcomer on the hotel scene is 1 Hotel Mayfair, the sustainable hotel chain's first location in Europe.

Located in the Islington/Highbury neighborhood in North London, Westerns Laundry is one of those IYKYK places. Housed in a converted garage (an exotic thing in London, so I hear), the cozy restaurant has a seafood and natural wine–focused menu that changes daily and is written on a chalkboard in the restaurant. Page says, "[It's] off the beaten track, but I love the interior of this place—it's homely meets London industrial with an indoor and outdoor area." It's also a favorite of Hadfield, who says, "Such a great date spot, [with] an ever-changing menu. Thankfully, the Rum Baba seems to be a permanent fixture, which you can't miss. They always have great wines available, and if you fancy a stroll after, you can walk 15 minutes to the Compton Arms, another one of my favourite pubs." It's also worth noting that it has a Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand recognition.

WWWTravels Tip: It's standard for bars and pubs to close at 11 p.m. or midnight in certain parts of the city, so make your plans earlier in the evening.

Claridge's Hotel is one of several grande dame hotels in London, but it might be the most "grande" of them all. It's been around forever, but now it has a sophisticated Art Deco restaurant to add to its appeal. Claridge's Restaurant opened in mid-2023 and features modern, upscale renditions of classic British cuisine, including a traditional Sunday roast. Page shared that "breakfast here is delicious, and it's the perfect spot for a truly British bite." The Calacatta marble–laden space is also wildly photogenic. Get there early to try to snag a seat at the stunning curved bar for a glass of champagne.

Perilla is another lovely neighborhood spot in North London and comes highly recommended by Hadfield. She says, "With a changing menu and beautiful interiors (keep an eye out for the cutlery drawers built into the tables), I have never had a bad experience here. It's on the pricier side but so consistent it's absolutely worth it, and I recommend it to everyone." With its relaxed, greenery-filled atmosphere and menu of inventive takes on traditional dishes, it's no wonder it's been a hot spot since it opened nearly 10 years ago.

More meals to jot down: When it comes to pubs, Farrell says that The Devonshire in Soho is a popular choice, as is The Pig and Butcher in Islington. Hadfield names the historic Chesham Arms as one of her favorite East London pubs. Page loves The River Café for special occasions and advises going in the summertime for the ultimate al fresco experience. Another favorite of hers is neighborhood bakery and restaurant Jolene . For brunch, Farrell says Milk London and The Apple Blue are worth getting up for. And for afternoon tea, Farrell recommends The Cadogan Hotel in Chelsea and says that Millie's Lounge in The Ned is a lovely wallet-friendly option for tea. Louie and NYC export Casa Cruz are two of the fashion crowd's current favorite hot spots.

Borough Market is a can't-miss stop in Central London. It's one of the largest and oldest (as in, about 1000 years old) food markets in London. There are more than a hundred stalls, stands, restaurants, and shops to peruse. Farrell recommends going hungry and prepared to spend, as you'll want to snack your way through the market. It's advised to avoid the market on weekend afternoons when it gets the most crowded, and be sure to save room in your luggage for non-perishable wares.

WWW Travels Tip: If you need to get across the river and don't want to walk or deal with traffic, Farrell suggests taking Uber Boat (yep, it's a thing), which she says is still an untapped resource.

London is filled with a mind-blowing number of museums and galleries, but if you visit just one museum during your trip and are a fashion fan, I'd recommend Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington. The museum, which is dedicated to the power of creativity, features a vast permanent exhibit, but it's the special exhibits that people come out in droves for. At press time, you'll find exhibitions on Gabrielle Chanel; Diva , which celebrates iconic performers across time; and ones on Naomi Campbell and Tropical Modernism architecture coming soon. Just be sure to book ahead, as the special exhibits usually require separate tickets and they tend to sell out.

WWW Travels Tip: It's a good idea to bring cash (pounds) when dining out, as that's how people often tip if service isn't included on the bill. It's also wise to purchase an Oyster card at the big Tube stations to use for public transportation throughout your stay. Oh, and be sure to stand to the right on the escalator at the Tube stations.

Every one of this guide's experts sang the praises of London's many parks. In particular, they love the historical Hampstead Heath , which boasts some of London's best views. Page recommends taking a dip in the park's swimming ponds in September when they're the most mild. Richmond Park , which is one of London's eight Royal Parks and dates back to 1625, is another popular green space. It's famous for its wild red and fallow deer that roam freely in the park. Page recommends heading further southwest to Petersham Nurseries , a garden center with a beautiful restaurant and café. Primrose Hill and Queen's Park are other green spaces our experts recommend checking out.

More sights to jot down: Tate Modern is a must-see if you're interested in contemporary art, while the overwhelmingly rich British Museum is Britain's largest museum. Farrell recommends walking down the Thames from Tower Bridge to Westminster, while Hadfield says that Royal Albert Hall is "a beautiful experience for live music." Last but not least, Page calls Aire Ancient Baths London exceptional and recommends the Barbican Centre , "a turning table of interesting artists, architecture, and film."

Located just off of Soho's iconic Carnaby Street, Annie's Ibiza is where you'll find owner Annie Doble's curation of pieces from her favorite designers from around the world, her special collaborations (such as Annie's x Clio Peppiatt, currently), and her designs , one of which was just worn on the red carpet by Dakota Johnson. You'll also find repurposed dresses and vintage, so there's something for everyone. The store is a celebrity favorite and counts Amal Clooney, Kate Moss, and Cara Delevingne among its fans. There's no better place to shop for a jaw-dropping party dress.

WWW Travels Tip: Skip crowded, tourist-filled Oxford Street and head to the shops on Kings Road instead. Farrell says, "It's far quieter and has more designer boutiques, independent stores, and interesting homeware."

If you're like me and would be happy to wear nothing but Toteme day in and day out, you'll want to visit its brand-new flagship store in Mayfair. Page says, "Their new store on Mount Street is incredible, and the furniture and architecture is the perfect backdrop to their always considered collections." It's the perfect minimalist space to shop the Scandinavian luxury brand's timeless pieces. It's worth noting that this is Toteme's first European store outside of Sweden.

You can't talk about London shopping without talking about vintage. Located in East London's Shoreditch neighborhood, Nordic Poetry is one of the city's best—especially for rare luxury finds. The shop is curated by its Swedish owner, Ameli Lindgren, who travels the world in search of vintage treasures from Alaïa, Gucci, Chanel, Prada, and all the rest of the most desired designer brands. Ask any London-based fashion person for the top vintage stores in the city, and Nordic Poetry is almost certain to be on their list.

More shopping to jot down: If you've never been to Liberty London department store, it's an absolute must. The Swedish brand Our Legacy's London location is a store Hadfield says she never leaves empty-handed. Foyles on Charing Cross Road is an enormous bookstore that Hadfield says she'd gladly lose an entire afternoon in. For vintage furniture, Page recommends Golborne 44 , while Hadfield loves 2&4 Vintage Furniture . Alex Eagle is a popular high-end lifestyle store, and Lovers Lane on Portobello Road is another popular vintage store that gets an honorable mention.

The consensus is that comfort is key in London. You're inevitably going to be doing a lot of walking, and flat shoes that'll take you up and down the Tube station stairs are essential. Hadfield also recommends packing layers, as you could easily go from hot to cold (especially when taking public transportation), and London is known to rain without any given notice—so waterproof outerwear will serve you well. Page also recommends packing cashmere sweaters for a trip to London. As Farrell puts it, "To say that London weather is unpredictable is generous." She says that right now Londoners are relying on long coats with jeans and a T-shirt and a sweater tied around your shoulders. Her advice? "As with any city trip, sunglasses, fine knits, jeans for day, slip dresses for evening, and a great coat like a trench, and you're sorted." All in all, try not to overthink it. As Hadfield puts it, "Really, anything goes. Spend the morning in East London and the afternoon in West, and you will see how different the style is from one end of the city to the other."

Scroll to shop some of the wardrobe essentials that are perfect for a trip to London.

Call it cliché, but a trench coat is truly the perfect outerwear for London.

"City chic and great for running around and exploring." — Page

Stylish flats are key for a trip to London.

British girls love outerwear from Whistles.

You'll never regret investing in a Khaite sweater.

Londoners wear Chelsea boots year-round. These are Hadfield's go-tos, as they can be dressed up or down.

Page loves these "comfy and versatile" jeans.

Perfect for wearing under your trench coat for a night out.

This will make your jeans and T-shirt look wildly elegant.

You'll need these just in case the sun comes out.

The 34 Best Things to Do in London, According to a Local

Top things to do in london.

L ondon ranks high among the best places to travel in the world, attracting millions of visitors from all corners of the globe every year. It may not be one of the cheap places to travel, but there are so many things to do in London that it's definitely worth a visit. So, once you've figured out the best time to visit London and the best time to book a flight —and you've watched King Charles's coronation to get in the mood—where to start?

If you've never been to London, you'll want to make sure to see the most important sights, but also some hidden gems we locals enjoy. I have been living in London for more than five years. I planned to just stay for a few weeks, but I fell in love with the city at first sight—and I still schedule in regular time for exploring my adopted home. I love to share my favorite spots as a travel writer, and I am on speed dial for friends, family and friends of friends who are visiting. It's impossible to fit everything London has to offer into one trip (or even one lifetime!), but it's easy to make the most of your time if you just know how.

Big Ben is London's most famous landmark, so it's a must-see for all travelers. The name refers to the huge bell inside the clock tower, which first chimed on May 31, 1859, but the whole building at the north end of the Houses of Parliament goes by this nickname. Big Ben was renamed Elizabeth Tower in honor of Queen Elizabeth II 's Diamond Jubilee in 2012, but most people don't call it that.

The tower underwent extensive renovations from summer 2017, and there was much excitement when the bells first rang again in November 2022. It's still not possible to climb up Big Ben quite yet, but the big reopening for visitors is scheduled for later in 2023. Your best bet for a picture-perfect view of the tower and the Houses of Parliament is from Westminster Bridge.

Pro tip: If you want to take a selfie with Big Ben, the best spot is just behind the landmark, on Great George Street. When coming from Westminster Bridge, walk past the tower and the tube station (Westminster) toward St. James's Park, Westminster Abbey to your left. While it might be a bit cliché to pose next to a red phone box, the photo will still look great on your Instagram—and many Londoners snap this shot too.

  • Westminster Abbey

If you followed King Charles 's coronation (or other festive royal events such as Prince William  and Kate Middleton 's wedding) you're probably already familiar with Westminster Abbey . But London's most iconic church is even more impressive when you step foot inside yourself. Westminster Abbey was founded in 960 AD and has been the coronation church since 1066. It is also the final resting place of no fewer than 17 monarchs (the late Queen Elizabeth is buried in Windsor Castle), scientists such as Sir Isaac Newton and world-famous writers including Charles Dickens.

Westminster Abbey is both one of London's top tourist attractions and a working church with daily services—so be prepared for crowds and parts of the abbey closed. The church is busiest in the mornings, so visit after lunchtime if you can book a time slot.

Pro tip: While it's perfectly possible to explore the abbey with an audio guide (included in the ticket price), their guided tours are worth a bit of extra money. You will get to see parts of Westminster Abbey that are normally closed to the public, including royal tombs, the Poets' Corner and Lady Chapel—and you'll get to hear lots of interesting facts and anecdotes.

The London Eye

The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the Thames River, and it's been a London landmark of its own for over 20 years, so no list of the things to do in London would be complete without mentioning it. But is it really worth it? Let's face it, the 30-minute-ride comes with a big price tag and potentially long queuing times on top. However, on a sunny day (or at night!) the views are truly stunning. If you're lucky, you'll not only see all the London sights including Big Ben, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and the Tower Bridge but all the way up to Windsor Castle too. So if you are new to London and don't mind spending some cash, go for it. Fun fact, the London Eye is also one of the top places in the U.K. for people on romantic getaways —and, in fact, to get engaged. They even offer special proposal packages with private pods and champagne.

Pro tip: Technically, you can just show up and buy your ticket on-site, but booking online saves you time and money. There are also discounted combination tickets including a river cruise or entry to Madame Tussaud's.

The Tate Modern

Museums rank high among the most popular attractions in London—and not just because you can visit them regardless of the weather. If you only have time for one, make it the Tate Modern , which is one of the most popular museums in the world . The massive art space with its iconic tower is housed in the former Bankside Power Station and sits right near the Thames, across from St Paul's Cathedral.

The exhibition spaces spread over seven floors and include original works by the likes of Picasso, Matisse and Warhol. Like most museums in London, the Tate Modern is free to visit, unless you want to see a special exhibition (book well in advance in that case). Should you be keen to see the Tate's sister gallery Tate Britain as well, hop on the Tate Boat right in front of the building and travel door to door in style. Boats run every 20 to 30 minutes during museum open hours.

Pro tip: Fancy turning your Tate Modern visit into a fun night out? Keep an eye on the monthly Tate Lates , a mix of art workshops and talks, DJs, bars and live music.

Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace has been the official residence of the British monarchs since 1837, and even though all the royal family currently live at other royal estates , it remains the place most associated with the crown. A highlight not to be missed is the Changing of the Guard, a traditional ceremony that sees one detachment of troops taking over from the other, marching along The Mall to Buckingham Palace with musical accompaniment (expect both traditional tunes and pop songs). It takes place on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and daily during the summer, at 11 A.M. It's one of the best free tourist attractions in London. For a prime spot, arrive at least one hour in advance, as the area gets packed year-round.

Pro tip: The State Rooms inside Buckingham Palace are open to visitors on selected dates during winter and spring, as well as for 10 weeks in summer. Tour tickets sell out quickly, so check dates and book as early as you can.

The Tower Bridge

Walking across the Tower Bridge is a must-do when in London. But nothing beats watching the landmark lift for tall vessels, including cruise ships , to pass through. River traffic has priority on this stretch of the Thames by law, meaning ships can request a lift any time of the day, bringing the traffic on the bridge to a complete halt. On average, the Tower Bridge opens twice a day. But what's the secret behind being at the right place at the right time? Luckily, it's pretty simple, as you can check online  to see when the bridge next lifts.  Then, make sure to arrive on time to watch the spectacle unfold.

Pro tip: For a full view of the lift (and great photo opportunities), position yourself on the river banks or a bridge opposite Tower Bridge. For a more close-up experience, stand on either end of the bridge.

Portobello Road Market

In the 1990s, the movie Notting Hill , starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, made the West London neighborhood of the same name known around the world as a romantic travel destination . But even if you're not a fan of rom-coms , Notting Hill and its famous Portobello Road Market —considered the largest antique market on the planet—have a lot to offer. The stalls, fold-out tables and shops are packed with vintage treasures, from lamps and chairs to paintings, jewelry and secondhand clothing, which makes it a great place for souvenir hunting. The market is open six days a week, but Saturday is the main day when all the sellers, antique hunters and street food vendors are out.

Pro tip: Notting Hill's signature pastel houses are just as famous as the market, and selfies on the steps around the Hillgate Place and Lancaster Road area are high on many visitors' bucket lists. Please keep in mind though that people actually live in these houses, so don't stare into their windows or leave trash behind.

The West End

The West End is London's equivalent to Broadway in New York City and the heart of commercial theater and musical productions in the U.K. More than 16 million people watched performances here in 2022, making tickets one of the hottest holiday gifts . Whether you're into the classics such as Les Miserables (running since 1985) and The Phantom of the Opera (since 1986) or want to see a feel-good musical featuring songs by Tina Turner, ABBA or Queen, this is the place. The Disney musicals are among the most popular things to do in London with kids, but they're just as fun to watch as an adult. For crime fans, Agatha Christie's Mousetrap is a must-see.

Pro tip: If you haven't set your mind on a specific show, you can score excellent last-minute deals on the day using the TodayTix app (look for "rush tickets" at 10 a.m. sharp). I've found myself sitting in some of the best seats in the house for around $30, especially on weeknights. Ticket booths around Leicester Square also sell discounted tickets.

The Tower of London

No list of the best things to do in London would be complete without the Tower of London: an iconic castle, former prison and execution location—as well as the home of the crown jewels . The royals' precious accessories have been stored here since 1661 and only leave the Tower when used on official occasions. Want to see King Charles's and Queen Camilla's crowns ? They are right here!

The Tower of London is more than 900 years old, and you can feel its history in every corner. Keep in mind that the complex is not only impressive but also huge, so plan at least a few hours to see everything. Besides its exhibitions, historic halls and the guards with their signature fur hats, the Tower is famous for its wild ravens. According to legend, the kingdom will fall if the six resident ravens ever decide to leave.

Pro tip: Tickets to the Tower of London come with audio guides. If you'd rather have a human companion, opt for a tour with a Beefeater, a working guard at the fortress.

Borough Market

Dating back to the 13th century, Borough Market , on the south side of the Thames, is London's oldest food market and a great food travel destination with more than 100 stalls and plenty of small restaurants and wine bars where you can enjoy lunch or dinner. While the market originally focused on British produce, you can now get Indian curries, pad Thai, Ethiopian stews, falafel wraps, pasta dishes and, of course, the obligatory fish and chips. There are also plenty of stalls to stock up on bread, veggies, wines and sweets to take home or have later in the day. The market is open Tuesday to Sunday.

Pro tip: Borough Market is a lunch favorite with people working at the nearby offices, so expect long queues around noon. If you can't find a quiet spot to eat, make yourself comfy at the riverbank a few minutes away by foot.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour: The Making of Harry Potter

London is full of locations featured in the Harry Potter movies (think St. Paul's Cathedral, Leadenhall Market, Borough Market or Tower Bridge), which you can explore on your own. But no place gets "muggles" (non-magic people) closer to Harry Potter's world than the Warner Bros. Studio Tour just outside the city. Here you will walk through Diagon Alley, peek into Harry's cupboard under the stairs and explore Hogwarts rooms such as the Great Hall or Dumbledore's office. You can even sample butter beer! The studio decoration changes according to season. I have seen the summer and Christmas versions so far, and Halloween is next on my list.

Pro tip: Advance booking is essential, even during shoulder seasons . Since muggles are, unfortunately, unable to arrive by broom, a shuttle bus from London's Watford Junction is included in the ticket price.

Columbia Road Market

Columbia Road Flower Market may be London's most popular place for flower shopping, and it's a weekend institution in East London. Rain or shine, the whole street gets packed from 8 a.m. every Sunday with dozens of stalls that sell tulips, roses, cacti, spider plants and banana trees. Judging by Instagram posts and people with cameras around their necks, the market might look like a bit of a tourist trap at first glance. But the majority of the visitors are locals who stock up on flowers after coffee or brunch at one of the little cafes in the neighborhood. The flowers are certainly the main selling point on a Sunday, but Columbia Road is dotted with little art shops and galleries too, so take your time to have a look around.

Pro tip: Columbia Road Market tends to be busy year-round, but if you want to avoid the largest crowds, it pays to show up right when it starts. For the best flower deals, come after lunchtime. The stalls close at around 3 p.m.

London's highest public garden, Sky Garden , sits on the 35th floor of the "Walkie Talkie," one of the city's landmark skyscrapers, and it provides spectacular panoramic views. Sky Garden is an oasis of plants, with an observation deck, an open-air terrace and two restaurants. Entry is free, but advance booking is essential. However, once you're in, you're in, so you can technically spend a whole day among the plants.

If you can't get into Sky Garden (or want to shoot more skyline pictures from a different angle), head to The Garden at 120, an open-air rooftop garden on the 15th floor about a five-minute walk away. It might not be as fancy as Sky Garden, but it's usually a lot quieter. I have had the whole garden to myself on weekday mornings more than once.

Pro tip: Tickets for the Sky Garden are released every Monday, and you can book up to three weeks in advance. If you're in the area but don't have a ticket, it's still worth trying your luck at the door, as they sometimes accept walk-ins.

Traditional afternoon tea

While Brits are the champions of tea drinking, afternoon tea is a lot more than just sipping on your favorite blend. The ritual dates back to the 19th century, when the ladies of the high society met for a light meal to shorten the time until dinner was served. Today, it's mainly saved for special occasions, but it also makes one of the most fun things to do in London when on a city break. A traditional afternoon tea menu includes small sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam and a selection of pastries and cakes. Earl Grey, Darjeeling and English Breakfast are the classic tea blends. If you really want to treat yourself, book a table at the glamorous salon at Cafe Royal . Oscar Wilde, Winston Churchill, Princess Diana and David Bowie were regulars here. Live piano music and champagne are included too.

Pro tip: Looking for a more casual afternoon tea option that doubles as a sightseeing tour? Hop on the Afternoon Tea Bus for a 90-minute ride.

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

While the Globe Theatre on the South Bank of the Thames isn't the original one from Shakespeare's time (that one burned down in 1613), it's still considered the writer's London home and the closest you could ever get to the original experience. The venue was rebuilt in the same shape and layout, using the original type of wood (green oak) and building techniques. Watch world-famous plays such as A Midsummer Night's Dream , Macbeth and The Comedy of Errors and fully immerse yourself in the world of Shakespeare.

Pro tip: The cheapest way to see a play (or get into an otherwise sold-out show) is the " 5£ Rush Tickets ." These are standing tickets right in front of the stage. While you might miss the comfort of a seat, you'll be closer to the action than anyone else (and save a lot of money too!). Tickets are released every Friday at 11 a.m. for the following week.

Little Venice

London is an amazing city to explore on foot, and once you've ticked off all the major sights, it's time to enjoy one of the locals' favorite walks. When I moved to London, I was amazed at how many locals lived on houseboats—it reminded me of The Netherlands, where I spent my college semester abroad. Regent's Canal is dotted with colorful narrowboats, and you can often watch their owners navigate them to and from their mooring spots. The most beautiful stretch is from King's Cross to Little Venice , a beautiful water canal area full of cafés and pubs and framed by willow trees. You will pass Camden and Regent's Park along the way.

Pro tip: Before you head on your two-hour walk, check out Coal Drop's Yard right behind the King's Cross station, with its restaurants, pubs and artsy shops, and Word on the Water, a floating bookstore.

East London's Shoreditch is one of the hippest districts in the city, with little cafes, quirky shops and bars on every corner. It's also the heart of London's street-art scene. Living in Shoreditch, I'm continuously amazed by all the murals and graffiti popping up overnight (and, sadly, often disappearing just as quickly). If you are like me and love taking edgy pictures, you will feel right at home. I always recommend Shoreditch Street Art Tours to friends visiting, a fun and comprehensive introduction to the local street-art scene. If you head out on your own, save Brick Lane, Fashion Street, Hanbury Street, Princelet Street, New Inn Yard, Redchurch Street and Shoreditch Highstreet Station on Google Maps.

To kill two birds with one stone, visit Shoreditch on a weekend when Brick Lane market (lots of food and some art and clothes stalls) takes place. Truman Brewery on Brick Lane is also home to the biggest indoor vintage market in the U.K., which is open seven days a week.

Pro tip: For a quick and inexpensive snack to go, head to Beigel Bake. The 24-hour shop is the most famous bagel place in London. Attention: They only take cash!

Paddle on the Thames River

Even for people who live in London, the city can feel overwhelming at times. Luckily though, there are plenty of opportunities to escape the hustle and bustle. London might not be the most obvious choice for water sports, but that's exactly how many locals like to spend their summer. Kayaking and canoeing are hugely popular in the city, with paddling clubs dotted along the Thames and the canals. Companies such as London Kayak Co. offer tours, including for beginners, that double as sightseeing trips , taking you past some of London's most iconic landmarks. Personally, I have become a stand-up paddling (SUP) addict, and my current favorite place to go is Richmond Park . Nothing beats sunset paddling after work or on a weekend, then ending the day on the terrace of a riverside pub.

Pro tip: You don't have to be a kayak or SUP pro to enjoy this activity. As long as you are reasonably fit (and not afraid to fall into the water, should you opt for paddleboarding) you are good to go.

Kensington Gardens

One of London's eight royal parks and formerly part of Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens is a popular recreational area where you can take a stroll, have a picnic, check out exhibitions at the Serpentine galleries, visit Kensington Palace or—if you're traveling with kids—make the most of the Diana Memorial Playground (including a wooden pirate ship and sculptures inspired by Peter Pan).

Ring-necked parakeets have spread all over London, but this park is your best bet to see them up close. And while nobody seems to be quite sure how they originally ended up in London, thousands have called it home since the 1990s. Here, the parakeets are so used to people they will land on your outstretched hands (or your shoulders or your head!) when you bring snacks (apples or seeds)—and sometimes even if you don't. Be aware, though, that the cute birds have surprisingly sharp claws, so your arms might end up looking like you've just been scratched by an angry cat.

Pro tip: The parakeets can be found near the Peter Pan statue in Kensington Garden. If you arrive by tube, get off at Lancaster Gate, walk past the lake and follow the squawking.

Summer music festivals

Glastonbury (the British equivalent to Coachella) is the No. 1 festival every music fan in the U.K. wants to attend. But London has a great number of other festivals, too, that are well worth checking out. Plus, there's no camping, so you can leave your sleeping bags and rain boots at home.

The largest event every year is the British Summer Time Festival in Hyde Park , commonly known as BST. It spreads over multiple dates throughout two weeks from the end of June. This year's headliners include Bruce Springsteen, Guns N'Roses and Pink. Other festivals I've attended that I'd definitely recommend: All Points East (two weekends in August, offering rock, indie and alternative music), Wireless (in July, a mecca for hip-hop fans), Mighty Hoopla (early June, a celebration of cheesy pop and queer culture, with lots of attendees dressed up accordingly) and Hampton Court Palace Festival (multiple days in June, come for both the music and the location).

Pro tip: For environmental reasons and due to the fact that London's summers get hotter by the year, many festivals now allow music fans to take refillable bottles inside, with water stations to be found all around the festival sites.

Barbican Conservatory

The Barbican Centre is London's largest multi-arts venue. Movies, live gigs, plays, exhibitions, restaurants—you name it, the iconic complex has it all. One of the lesser known gems is their indoor garden on Level 3, which houses 2,000 species of plants and trees as well as three small ponds. It's a great place if you need a break from sightseeing or want to spend a relaxing hour or two hiding from the rain. Plus, it's quite romantic—a friend of mine got engaged amidst the plants! Unfortunately, the whole Barbican complex tends to feel like a labyrinth with tons of confusing walkways. Schedule in some extra time just in case you get lost, and don't sweat it, because it regularly happens to pretty much every Londoner.

Pro tip: The Conservatory is only open on select days. Entry is free, but book a time slot in advance to make sure you'll get in. Tickets are released one week in advance on Fridays at 10 a.m., with a limited number of additional ones available at 9:30 a.m. on the day.

Gods Own Junkyard

Gods Own Junkyard is a surreal exhibition place packed with blinking neon signs, old movie props, circus lighting and retro displays. It's the private collection of the late owner Chris Bracey, who made signs for Soho's strip clubs before he went on to work with some of Hollywood's greatest directors, including Tim Burton ( Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ), Christopher Nolan ( Batman ) and Stanley Kubrick ( Eyes Wide Shut ).

The gallery-turned-warehouse isn't exactly close to the city center, but it ranks high among the best things to do in London. Entry is free, however you might end up taking a neon sign home from their small shop. There's also a cafe and fully licensed bar, if you want to linger for a bit.

Pro tip: It might be tempting, but Gods Own Junkyard is, unfortunately, not the place to try out your latest camera gear. You are allowed to take pictures with your phone (for personal use and social media) but not with any cameras or professional equipment.

Cahoots Underground

If you like colorful cocktails and immersive experiences, make sure to check out some of London's hidden bars. One of the coolest places I've been is the 1940s-inspired Cahoots Underground , located in a retired tube station around the corner from Soho's Carnaby Street. The speakeasy bar is decorated with tube signs and maps, the cocktails (with names like "Winston Churchill" and "Judy Garland") are listed in a newspaper instead of a regular menu, and the waiters are dressed up as ticket inspectors. What's more, there's a live piano player taking requests from guests (everything from Frank Sinatra to Miley Cyrus). Be prepared for spontaneous singalongs and people dancing between the tables.

Other hidden bars worth checking out include Nightjar Shoreditch (old-school glamour, candlelit tables and live jazz and swing), Discount Suit Company (in a former suit tailor's storeroom), Opium in Chinatown (a 1920s Shanghai-themed bar tucked away behind red curtains), Purl (1920s theme, live music and cocktail mixing classes) and Ladies & Gents (in a former public washroom).

Pro tip: Better safe than sorry—all the above-mentioned bars are very popular, so book a table just in case.

Dennis Severs' House

If you've ever wondered what everyday London life looked like in the 18th century, Dennis Severs' House gives you a first-hand taste. The building was left exactly as when the original owners, a family of silk weavers, lived there. The rooms are lit by fire and candlelight, and visitors are encouraged to tour them in complete silence to "not disturb the family." You will find yourself wandering around the living room full of faded photographs, old carpets, mugs and books. The kitchen has a fully laid table—bitten apples included! It almost feels like the family is about to return and go on with their daily routine any moment. To make the time-travel experience even more authentic, there are also added scents of food, woodsmoke and chatters of the occupants.

Pro tip: Walk-up tickets are available, but unless you don't mind standing in line for up to an hour or two, I'd recommend booking a time slot.

Talk to any Londoner and they'll probably tell you that Camden is just not what it used to be. And I'm not going to lie, the North London neighborhood has dramatically changed in recent years. Its edgy, alternative vibe is pretty much gone. Many of the charming parts of Camden Market  were replaced by fancy stalls, food courts and colorful hanging umbrellas. However, Camden is still well worth a visit, you just need to do a bit more digging. Ignore the souvenir shops and look for the small creative sellers that have stood their ground. Then head to The Hawley Arms, my go-to Camden pub and a musician's hangout. The late, great Amy Winehouse was a regular.

Camden's music scene is legendary, and many pubs have live gigs and open-mic nights. Some of the most iconic venues to check out for gigs include KOKO (frequented by supermodels such as Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss in their heydays), Electric Ballroom, Spiritual Records, Dingwalls and Jazz Cafe.

Pro tip: The annual Camden Rocks Festival sees hundreds of gigs around Camden Town. Check out updates and ticket information here .

A pub for Sunday roast

Sunday roast is a British meal traditionally consisting of roasted meat of some sort (beef is the most common), mashed and roasted potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, carrots, seasonal greens, gravy and apple or mint sauce. It's a big, hearty meal typically enjoyed early or late Sunday afternoon. Classic drinks to go with the foodie feast include local beers and ciders.

Sunday roasts rank high among the top things to do in London, and luckily there are plenty of options all around the city. One of the most popular is Camberwell Arms , which features five options served for two people to share. Other good choices are the trendy Blacklock Shoreditch (located inside a former furniture factory) and Quality Chop House, which has fed hungry guests since 1869. If you're a vegan, like me, or just curious about a meat-free option, head to The Spread Eagle, London's first fully plant-based pub.

Pro tip: All the above pubs (and many others around the city) are packed on Sunday, so booking is essential.

Royal Albert Hall

Opened in 1871 by Queen Victoria (and dedicated to her husband Albert, hence the name), Royal Albert Hall is probably the world's most famous concert hall. Its annual highlight is The Proms , an eight-week series of classical music organized by the BBC. But even if you're not a fan of orchestra performances, the venue is worth a visit. It's stunning inside and out and has the best acoustics you can find in the city.

What's more, the program is a lot more varied than you might expect. They also feature regular pop and rock gigs, and Eric Clapton, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, David Bowie and the Beatles have played here. You can also catch circus performances, movie nights, yoga sessions with live music and the occasional sumo wrestling event. If you go to a live gig, be prepared for the band to leave the stage midconcert for a mandatory interval. When I saw Bryan Adams in 2022, he apologized for the break, then jokingly explained that even rock stars had to follow the Royal Albert Hall's strict house rules.

Pro tip: Many of the events at Royal Albert Hall are instant sell-outs, but it's always worth checking at the box office or their website for last-minute tickets on the day of the event. If you're interested in a peek behind the scenes, book a backstage tour.

Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum in posh South Kensington is one of the best things to do in London with kids. It houses more than 80 million animals, plants and rocks spanning 4.5 billion years that are displayed in about 20 galleries. The main eye-catcher upon arrival is a 25.2-metre-long blue whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling. The female animal died in Ireland more than 120 years ago and was given a name when moved to its new home: Hope. Other highlights include dinosaurs, a giant gorilla, a Moon rock sample from the 1972 Apollo 16 mission, meteorites and an earthquake simulator. The Natural History Museum is free to visit except for special exhibitions.

Pro tip: Watch out for museum events such as yoga and tai chi classes, silent disco nights or sleepovers for grown-ups.

Gordon's Wine Bar

Gordon's Wine Bar , conveniently located close to Covent Garden and the West End, is London's oldest wine bar. It opened its doors in 1890, and not much has changed since. The moment you step into this cave-like spot you'll be transported back in time, with most of the original decor still in place. Faded newspaper articles and photos hang on the walls, and there are wine-bottle candle holders and old-fashioned wooden chairs and tables. The low ceiling further adds to the atmosphere. As expected, the bar has an extensive choice of wines, which can be paired with cheese, meat, mezze and sharing boards.

Gordon's is not only a great place for drinks and food but also for people-watching. The bar is one of the most popular spots for people to first meet their dating-app match.

Pro tip: Gordon's Wine Bar is one of the few places in London that do not accept bookings. Arrive early, and be prepared to wait for a bit—it will be worth it.

Greenwich makes a fun day out of the city—without actually leaving the city. Located in the southeast of London, it's home to an artsy market with lots of food stalls, a beautiful park perfect for taking London skyline pictures, the National Maritime Museum and the Cutty Sark, one of the oldest and best known tea clipper ships in the world. There's also the Prime Meridian at the Royal Observatory, where you can stand with one foot in the western hemisphere and the other foot in the eastern. Greenwich can be reached by tube, bus and train, but the most fun way is to take a boat from central London. Hop on board at Westminster Pier and see famous landmarks such as Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, St Paul's Cathedral and Tower Bridge from the water.

Pro tip: While it's possible to buy tickets for the boats from the ticket booths and machines at the pier, the easiest way is to just use your bank or credit card and tap in and out like you would at the bus or tube.

Saatchi Gallery

London has about 200 museums, but Saatchi Gallery is the one place I keep coming back to again and again. A registered charity, the exhibition place is known for its fun and immersive displays of all kinds of subcultures and contemporary photo shows, and it's a supporter of up-and-coming artists from the U.K. and beyond. Highlights I've seen here include a show on the heydays of the British rave scene, exhibitions on Bob Marley and French street artist JR, as well as American photographers documenting social change since the 1960s. Recently, they also had a three-floor display of the U.K.'s graffiti scene.

Pro tip: The gallery regularly hosts artists talks, and they also have "Saatchi Lates," which feature extended exhibition hours, workshops and DJ sets.

Independent cinemas

While London's big-chain movie theaters around Leicester Square all come with XXL screens and the latest technology, the independent ones are where the real magic happens. Just around the corner from Leicester Square toward China Town is Prince Charles Cinema , where both the latest blockbusters and classic movies are shown. They also have movie marathons—from Harry Potter to Terminator and Lord of the Rings— where fans gather for up to 24 hours to watch the whole series. They even encourage singalongs during music-movie marathons by projecting lyrics on the screen for a karaoke vibe.

I am a regular at Genesis Cinema in East London, which has been showing movies since 1912 and comes with bar events such as open-mic and comedy nights on top. They also charge only 5£ Monday to Thursday, which is less than a third of what you'd pay on Leicester Square. Other great places include Electric Cinema, which has leather armchairs and double beds in the front row; Lexi Cinema, a volunteer-run place supporting charities in South Africa); and Everyman Screen on the Green, where wine and pizza are served to your seat.

Pro tip: London hosts tons of small and large film festivals throughout the year, so watch out for premieres, Q&As and other special events.

Highgate Cemetery

Walking around graves might not seem the most obvious choice for a fun day out in London, but Highgate Cemetery is worth making an exception. The Victorian cemetery looks a bit cramped and chaotic, but the sunken headstones, faded engravings and missing names on the tombs make it beautiful and charming at the same time. Highgate is the final resting place of no less than 170,000 people, including many celebrities. The one resident most visitors are looking for is German philosopher Karl Marx. His grave can be found in the east part of the cemetery and is easily recognizable by a giant sculpture of his head.

Pro tip: To enter the cemetery , you need a ticket, which you can buy online or on site. If you want some background info (and to hear morbid anecdotes), you can also book a guided tour.

Hackney City Farm

Big cities and farms might not go together well at first glance, but London does have several working farms close to its busiest districts. One of the loveliest is Hackney City Farm in East London, which has pigs, donkeys, ponies, sheep, ducks, a vegetable garden, a small shop that sells homemade produce and a restaurant. The farm opened in 1984 and regularly welcomes local school kids. They also run workshops in animal handling and arts classes including pottery and woodworking.

Pro tip: Visits are free, but donations are welcome. Don't leave without a drink in their cute backyard garden.

The Bull and Last hotel review: Highgate’s smart gastropub with rooms

london tourist offers

Liz Edwards

Wednesday February 28 2024, 12:18pm

There are foodie pubs and then there are foodies’ pubs, and the Bull and Last in Highgate, north London, is a classic example of the latter. Since 2008, when it was taken over by Joe Swiers (ex-Wolseley) and Ollie Pudney (ex-Richard Corrigan), the pub — and its big-flavour, pedigree-ingredient pub grub turned up to 11 — has been a darling of the UK’s food set. The Times critic Giles Coren is such a fan of the place and its “Georgian magnificence”, he wrote the foreword to its history-and-cookbook. In 2018 it closed for a huge refurb, removing the roof to transform the two-bedroom upstairs flat into seven bedrooms, returning to the 19th-century building’s coaching-inn roots (named because it was the “last” stop for stagecoaches leaving London). Those rooms, finished just in time for the pandemic, have now hit their stride, welcoming guests from Wimbledon to Wisconsin looking for a lie-down after the best post-Hampstead-Heath-yomp feed.

Overall score 8/10

Rooms and suites

The Bull and Last is one of the best places to stay in London

Score 7/10 Local connections are big for the seven bedrooms, from the art on the walls and the hand-drawn map of neighbourhood highlights to the figures the rooms are named after — including Ruth Ellis, Dido Belle and Lady Henry Somerset. They have a more sophisticated feel than the slightly eccentric boho dining rooms on the ground and first floors — bedrooms have panelled walls in petrol-blue and eau de nil, sisal rugs on parquet floors and hexagonal marble bathroom tiles. There’s plenty of light from skylights, Crittall windows and brass swing-arm lamps, and eco credentials burnished by the carbon-neutral recyclable beds, plant-based own-brand Woodsome smellies and compostable coffee capsules from Brixton. Top-floor Faraday, with its glass-cased butterfly artwork and freestanding copper bathtub, is one of the bigger rooms, with space for a fold-out bed; Keats is smaller but has a cute blue velvet reading nook.

Food and drink

The Bull & Last, Highgate, is one of the best places to stay in the UK

Score 9/10 The Bull and Last celebrates everything that’s local and precious little that’s low-cal. This is proper diet-be-damned food (wallet-be-damned too), not least because the menu is one of those beguiling ones that draws you in with delectable nibbles (the signature Scotch egg) and starters (the multi-dish fish board is a perennial favourite) before you even get to the serious business of the mains (the ballottine of cod with trout-roe mousse is excellent). You can order a roast on Sunday, breakfast at the weekend (weekday guests not dashing off to meetings have Kalendar and other cafés just up the road on Swain’s Lane) and in summer, a tote-bag picnic to take up to the Heath. Veggie options are on offer, but aren’t the pub’s forte — as you might guess from the extravagant taxidermy throughout, including nose-ringed bulls in the bar and a huge moose over the upstairs fire. Lunch and dinner here gets so booked up that even guests are advised to make reservations in advance.

What else is there?

The Bull and Last is one of the best places to stay in London

Score n/a The Heath acts as the pub’s extended grounds and guests can borrow tennis racquets and pétanque sets to take to the courts nearby, or even borrow a Brompton bike for a summery spin.

Where is it?

Score 7/10 Hampstead Heath is there for the taking: the views from Parliament Hill; the ever-popular waters of the bathing ponds and Parliament Hill lido; Kenwood House for art and outdoor concerts. Beyond the high-end indie delis and cafés on Swain’s Lane, you’re also close to Highgate Cemetery if you want to pay your tributes to Karl Marx. You can get into central London too — though you’ll appreciate Highgate’s villagey bolt hole all the more post-bustle.
