The largest privately-owned bus and coach company in the Midlands has gone into administration.

Travel de Courcey, which is based in Coventry, says it’s been ‘forced’ into administration after a fall in passenger numbers and income because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The firm's CEO, Adrian de Courcey, says it's a “deeply sad day.”

The company says it called in the administrators after seeing “a huge and sudden collapse of business,” which hasn’t improved enough since lockdown measures were eased.

The firm cites its Coventry to Leicester service as an example - which it says has often been running without any passengers at all.

Coventry bus and coach company invests £3m to double its hq.

travel de courcey companies house

One of the UK’s largest independent-owned bus and coach companies has doubled the size of its Coventry headquarters after investing £3 million in a state-of-the-art depot.

Travel de Courcey has created an impressive 18,000 sq ft building which includes an engineering facility incorporating eight bays to repair the company’s 106 vehicles, wireless vehicle platforms and LED lighting along with offices for staff with the entire operation being powered by biomass wood chip.

Their ambitious plans went ahead after receiving help from the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) Growth Hub to resolve an issue over the lease at its site off Rowley Drive in Baginton, where it has been based since 1981.

CWLEP Growth Hub Commercial Manager Jeremy Moore and Planning and Development Adviser Bill Blincoe enlisted the support of Coventry MP Geoffrey Robinson and Coventry City Council Deputy Chief Executive (Place) Martin Yardley to arrange a meeting with council officers to agree a new 150-year lease.

Adrian de Courcey, Chief Executive of Travel de Courcey, said the intervention of the Growth Hub was instrumental in the business and its 300 staff staying in Coventry rather than extending its depot in Birmingham.

He said: “We had outgrown our previous building and started to look at other sites but we realised it made sense to stay where we were because it is a perfect location for the majority of our work.

“Part of the depot had a 99-year lease and the other part had a 12-year lease so it didn’t make sense to invest £3 million when we only had 12 years remaining on part of our lease.

“We got in touch with the Growth Hub to explain our problem and they were fantastic.

“They contacted Geoffrey Robinson, who has always been supportive of business development in Coventry, and he spoke to Martin Yardley which led to a meeting with Coventry City Council.

“Phil Costigan from Band Hand Button led the negotiations on our behalf and we have signed a 150-year lease.

“Jeremy, Bill and Craig Humphrey at the Growth Hub have been incredibly supportive and this project wouldn’t have happened without their commitment to our vision and their support in helping us to meet with key stakeholders including Coventry City Council.”

Adrian said Travel De Courcey now have a high-tech depot which has taken 12 months to build to meet their needs in the short and long-term to further grow the business which operates 24 hours a day 364 days a year.

“We previously had a 1980s-style workshop and there was more accidental damage caused in there to our vehicles than out on the roads because space was so tight,” he said.

“We can now fit in eight vehicles and we have more charging points for our electric vehicles. With the way the industry is growing, there will be no diesel vehicles soon and to survive in this industry we have to be at the forefront of electric vehicles.”

Jeremy Moore, of the CWLEP Growth Hub, which is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, said their work with Travel de Courcey perfectly illustrated their services.

“We are here to support businesses in many ways and one of those can be helping to resolve lease or planning issues by knowing the right people to get in touch with to settle any issues to ensure the growth of a business,” he said.

“It is great that we have played our part in making sure Travel de Courcey which was set- up nearly 50 years ago has not only stayed in the city but is continuing to grow all aspects of its business.”

Much-loved Coventry bus and coach company falls into administration

travel de courcey companies house

A much-loved Midlands transport company has been forced into administration after its business collapsed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Travel de Courcey, based in Coventry, is the largest privately-owned bus and coach company in the Midlands and operates a network of services across the area including to hospitals, schools, the Ricoh Arena and the NEC.

The 48-year-old company, which employs around 180 staff, took the decision after a dramatic decline in passenger numbers and income.

Adrian de Courcey, CEO and son of its founder, Mike, said: “ Travel de Courcey, like every company in our industry sector, has been severely impacted by the Covid-19 crisis.

“ We have assessed all aspects of our business going forward and it is clear that, due to the reduction in our services and vastly reduced passenger numbers, we have had no alternative but enter into the administration process.

“ This move is very much a last resort brought on by global circumstances beyond our control. We saw a huge and sudden collapse of business at the start of the lockdown and it has not improved sufficiently for us to be a going concern.

“ For example, we operate a service from Coventry to Leicester and on many days, it has run without any passengers at all.

“ It is perfectly understandable that people have been very cautious about public transport and many of those who have returned to work have taken alternative forms of transport.

“ Travel de Courcey is a family-owned and run company which has always valued the dedication and loyalty of its staff. We have been consulting with colleagues and it has been very hard for everyone.

“The company has been a huge part of my own family ’ s life and we are immensely proud of the contributions and achievements of all our employees over many years. Our thoughts are with all our colleagues, customers, suppliers and the local communities we serve. It is a deeply sad day.”

Travel de Courcey has a proud history of innovation and received a Queen ’ s Award for Enterprise in 2017. The company was also the first in the UK to operate fast-charging electric buses.

Matt Hardy of insolvency practitioners Poppleton & Appleby has been appointed as joint administrator.

He said: “ Travel de Courcey is far from alone in this sector in suffering financial hardship and we will be working to salvage what we can from what is a very sad situation. We are expecting interest in certain strands of the company. ”

Business News: After 50 years It's still a great life at Travel de Courcey

TWO employees at award-winning Coventry firm Travel de Courcey have clocked up an impressive half a century on the buses.

General manager Bob Wildman and operations supervisor Sue White have each been driving the city-based business forward for 25 years. And the pair were celebrated for their hard work and commitment to the business at a ceremony this month.

Sue was first to join Travel de Courcey in 1984 as part of the on-the-job training course school leavers – known as YTS – and memorably welcomed Bob to the team three years later.

Sue, who had a three-year break from the firm to have her children, said: “On the morning Bob arrived for his first day of work, we were stuck for a bus driver.

“Before he had a chance to put down his briefcase, I asked him if he could drive a bus and if he knew how to get to a local school. Thankfully, he answered yes to both.”

As a 16-year-old, Sue’s career began as an office junior an she moved on to the operational side of the business, helping to manage the drivers’ rotas and timetables.

She said: “When I joined I was working in a little caravan in the depot’s yard which was the office.

“Things have moved on so much since then as the company has grown but it’s still the same job that I love. Just like Bob’s first day, we all pull together to get the job done and it’s all hands on deck if need be.”

Bob joined as general manager and has been instrumental in developing it from a small local operator to one of three private bus and coach companies in the UK, and the largest in Warwickshire and the West Midlands.

His 40 years in the industry was capped in 2011 when he was named Bus Manager of the Year at the premier national awards for operators. Travel de Courcey was also awarded Bus Operator of the Year for fleets of its size in the UK.

And more recently the company scooped the Customer Service Award in the Coventry Telegraph Business Awards 2012 on Friday night.

Bob said: “We had a fleet of about 20 vehicles when I joined and now we’re heading for 120 to support our local, regional, national and international operations. I have enjoyed being part of a business that has gone from strength to strength as we have maintained a policy of steady but consistent growth.

“Our number one prioerty remains the same as the day I joined which is to get our vehicles out on the road and to move our passengers to where they need to be.”

Sue and Bob were presented with a carriage clock in recognition of their service by Travel de Courcey’s founder and managing director Mike de Courcey.

It has been a busy couple of years for the firm – which has been growing in size and winning a wealth of new contracts across Coventry and Warwickshire.

Most recently Travel de Courcey has taken over the Park & Ride North bus route and to mark the occasion, bosses have given the service a rather unique facelift.

The firm has put the once familiar sight of burgundy and cream buses back on Coventry’s streets – and named the vehicles after cars associated with the city.

The new-look single-deckers for Park & Ride North, which transports passengers from Courthouse Green into the city centre, are reminiscent of Coventry’s burgundy and cream buses in the 1950s and 1960s.

Both have been named after the famous Sunbeam models, Rapier and Stiletto, as part of Travel de Courcey’s decision to brand its buses with names of cars that have links with the city.

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
