Expert Picks: Valspar Championship

How it works: Each week, our experts from PGATOUR.COM will make their selections in PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf. Each lineup consists of four starters and two bench players that can be rotated after each round. Adding to the challenge is that every golfer can be used only three times per each of four Segments.

Aside from the experts below, Golfbet Insider Rob Bolton breaks down the field at the Valspar Championship in this week's edition of Power Rankings .

Betting picks

WILL GRAY (Lead, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Keegan Bradley (+4000) – Going back to the well with Bradley, one of my picks at Bay Hill who always starts quickly at Innisbrook Resort. Should’ve won here in 2021.
  • Longshot: Kevin Yu (+10000) – Consistently strong off the tee this year, which you need at Innisbrook. When the other parts of the game have clicked, it’s netted him top-10 results.
  • Top 10: Doug Ghim (+400) – He’s still in search of his first TOUR win but has cobbled together five straight top-20 finishes, including a T16 result last week at TPC Sawgrass.
  • Head-to-Head (H2H): Adam Hadwin (-110) over Beau Hossler – The former Valspar champ should rebound from last week’s club toss/missed cut. This is more of a fade of Hossler, who has missed the cut in four of five trips to Innisbrook.

BEN EVERILL (Senior writer, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Sam Burns (+1100) – If you only get one winner option Burns is the man to take at Innisbrook until he proves otherwise. Two wins and a T6 last three years here and showed glimpses of great at TPC Sawgrass.
  • Top 10: Nick Taylor (+300) – I went close to plumping for Taylor as my outright but let’s just pick up some quick units here instead. T10 last year and one of the best putters on TOUR this season so far.
  • Longshot: Adam Schenk (+6600) – Runner-up here last time out he certainly knows how to get around this joint. Finally showed some recent form with a top-20 last week at TPC Sawgrass.
  • H2H: Doug Ghim (-140) over Sepp Straka – I was hoping Ghim would fit into the longshot bracket but at +4000 he’s under that mark (but still worth an outright look). No worse than T16 his last five starts… he’s potentially building to something big.

CHRIS BREECE (Senior Content Manager, Golfbet)

  • Winner: Sam Burns (+1100) – I’m not going to overthink this. Way too good here every here. He’s been trending upwards. A few bad holes derailed him from being in contention at THE PLAYERS.
  • Top 10: Nick Taylor (+300) – He’s been in the mix almost every week in 2024, including Thursday/Friday at TPC Sawgrass. He was T10 here last here.
  • Longshot: Matt NeSmith (+10000) – His two finishes here have been T3/T21. Had two good rounds at TPC Sawgrass last week for a T26.
  • H2H: Justin Thomas (-125) over Brian Harman – I’m banking on the mental exhaustion from Harman after a close call last week.

MATT DELVECCHIO (Social Content Manager, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Nick Taylor (+3500) – There’s so much to like about Taylor and his game so far this year. Was in the mix for a bit at THE PLAYERS. Nothing worse than a T39 finish since his playoff win at the WM Phoenix Open. Combo that with the fact that he likes Innisbrook (T10 last year), it seems to me all signs pointing in the right direction for Taylor.
  • Top 10: Brian Harman (+200) – He’s been putting up some really low numbers lately and I see no reason to think that will stop this week. T5 here in 2022. I considered Harman for outright as he looks like he’s ready to win but I’ll settle for a safer pick with a top-10 finish.
  • Longshot: Brendon Todd (+6600) – Todd has been very hit or miss this season. He has the game that I think will allow him to maneuver around Innisbrook and get him within striking distance for a run at the win come Sunday.
  • H2H: Nick Taylor (-120) over Eric Cole – Going back to the well with the double down on one player. Taylor aside, Eric Cole’s game has been in a bad place as of late, with two missed cuts in his last four events. With that being said he’s also a boom or bust candiate (T21 at Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, T10 at The Genesis Invitational). I’ll bet on the bust this week.

How to play golf: Tour pro strategy lessons

Published: 13 August 2021

Strategy tips from the world's best golfers.

Strategy tips from the world's best golfers.

European Tour, PGA Tour, Major and Ryder Cup winners share their golf strategy secrets to help you play better golf, lower your handicap and win those matchplay clashes with your mates.

As amateur golfers so many of us fail to lower our handicaps or enjoy matchplay success because, despite physically knowing how to play golf, we drop silly shots due to poor strategy on the golf course.

RELATED:  Putting coach Phil Kenyon saves you six shots per round

Ian Poulter consults his yardage book.

We asked a selection of European Tour, PGA Tour, Major and Ryder Cup winners to share their professional golf strategy lessons to help you play smarter golf and achieve your goals. whether it’s to lower your handicap, break 100, 90 or 80 or simply take the bragging rights in your next matchplay clash with your mates.

RELATED:  Five simple steps to lower golf scores

Lee Westwood knows his yardages for every club and swing.

Lee Westwood: “Know your average yardages”

Handicap golfers don’t hit enough club a lot of the time, so they often find themselves coming up short. Most of the trouble is at the front of the green, so you’re usually better off being long than short.

It also doesn’t help that most people think they hit the ball further than they really do. Choose your club based on your average carry distance and favour the longer club if you’re in doubt – unless there’s serious trouble just over the green.

I write my average carry distances on my clubheads as a reminder.

Soren Kjledsen's putting has helped him to victories.

Soren Kjeldsen: “Leave yourself below the hole”

Shorter par 4s often have tricky greens as one of their main defences, so consult a yardage book to see where the slopes are and how severe they are.

Sometimes eight-feet uphill can be easier than four feet downhill or across a slope – even if it means leaving a chip short on purpose, rather than running it too far past.

RELATED:  Best Putters

Ian Poulter knows a thing or two about matchplay!.

Ian Poulter: “How to win at matchplay”

Be aggressive. If there’s an opportunity to get to a green, I’ll go for it. On a short par 4, or somewhere that gives the best chance of making three, I will be really aggressive in matchplay. You’ve got to take on risks. Cautious golf doesn’t win in matchplay.

You have to hit driver where you can to leave yourself as short an approach as possible.  If you don’t, your opponent will, and you don’t want to give him a chance.

Make them hole out I’ve heard this idea about giving putts early to pile the pressure on later, but it’s absolute nonsense. If you give a three-foot putt, a player is entitled to put the ball down and hit it as a practice anyway, so it’s irrelevant. Make them hole everything but a simple tap-in every time.

Ian Poulter celebrates at Medinah.

Expect the unexpected. As much as I’m trying to hole everything, I always expect my opponent to do the same. Even if it looks as though your opponent is out of the hole, you still expect them to hole their next shot.

RELATED:  Why the harder you try, the worse you play

However, there are times to be sensible. Birdies are what win holes, but if your opponent has hit it in the water and the best they can do is bogey, there is no point being overly aggressive and bringing in an error for them to get off the hook. Take par if that’s what you need to win the hole – just keep your opponent under pressure.

Ryan Fox has won around the world.

Ryan Fox: “Choose the best lay-up”

If I’m laying-up I’d prefer to leave myself a full swing, but it depends on the flag.

If it’s at the back and you have a lot of green to work with, the closer you can get to the green the better. But if it’s at the front, a lot of the time you can’t bounce it in, so you’ve got to leave yourself a full shot so you can stop the ball with height and spin.

Francesco Molinari has won some of golf's biggest events.

Francesco Molinari: “Play for the middle of the green”

For the average golfer, the secret to hitting more greens is picking a club that should find the safety of the middle of the green.

You shouldn’t always just go for the flags because, very often, doing so can leave you in all kinds of trouble.Always play to the distance of the middle of the green.

Percentage-wise it’s much simpler and is likely to give you a better scoring chance than going, say, for a short flag and coming up short, or going for a back flag and flying the green!

Chris Paisley has won on the European and Challenge Tour.

Chris Paisley: “It sounds obvious, but keep the ball in play!”

It depends on the length of the hole and course, but you don’t always need to take driver on every par 4 and 5

RELATED:  How to cope when your form deserts you

You can save yourself a lot of strokes by getting the ball in play with a 3-wood, especially if driver brings hazards more into play or you can’t reach a par 5 in two anyway.

Sensible golf helped Colin Montgomerie to plenty of wins.

Colin Montgomerie: “Take your punishment and don’t make it worse”

Too many amateurs try to do too much, rather than thinking positionally to make the next shot as easy as possible.

RELATED:  Nine golf strategy mistakes we all make

If you find yourself in trouble make sure you get out of it as easily as possible – you don’t want turn a bogey into a double or triple.

Andrea Pavan loves his driving iron.

Andrea Pavan: “Consider using a driving iron off the tee”

I use my 18° driving iron quite a lot. It’s an integral club in my bag. It’s really good off the tee on tougher driving holes, especially when the fairways are hard and fast in the summer.

Related:  Me And My Golf’s best-ever tips

The lower flight is really good when it’s windy and it can go pretty far; it’s also good for hitting second shots into par 5s. I’ve used a hybrid in the past, but I prefer the long iron off the tee, so I stick with it from week-to-week. The only drawback is that it’s not as good out of the rough as a hybrid.

To hit driving iron your ball should be just ahead of centre, but it has to be before the low point of your swing – under your left shoulder – to help you hit slightly down.

Everything else is like a normal iron shot – good balance, weight centred between the feet, and a slight forward lean of the shaft at address.

Peter Hanson has six European Tour and two Ryder Cup wins.

Peter Hanson: “Aim on the safe side”

Even if you’re feeling comfortable and you have a relatively short club in your hand, I’d still aim three or four yards to the safe side of the pin if it’s near the edge of the green – just left if it’s on the right, just right if it’s on the left, just long if it’s at the front, and just short if it’s at the back.

Never take dead aim at the flag because you always want to give yourself a bit of margin when the penalty for missing the green is so harsh.

Marcel Siem talks through his next shot.

Marcel Siem: “Check the pin position”

It’s vital you walk to a position where you can see the green and flag if the shot is blind, especially if it’s a hole you’re not very familiar with.

The pin position and any hazards around the putting surface will obviously affect the club you need to hit, but also where you can’t miss the green and what miss will leave a simple up-and-down.

Bernd Wiesberger knows how to shoot low scores.

Bernd Wiesberger: “Use your shots, that’s what your handicap is for”

If you have a handicap, then a hole’s par is meaningless. Adjusting the par on the card with the shots you get will make a good round seem much more achievable and prevent you making big mistakes.

Target holes where you think you can beat your par but acknowledge holes where bogey (or even double) is acceptable – just not a blow-out!

Chris Kirk's strategy changes for the hole's shape.

Chris Kirk: “Increase your margin for error”

Think about the shape of the hole. A straight drive may give you 15 yards to work with in the landing zone, while a draw will shrink your target to five-10 yards, and a fade will increase it to 20-30 yards.

RELATED:  Best golf balls for beginners and high handicappers

If the hole doesn’t suit your shot shape, then take a shorter club that puts you in a more generous part of the fairway.

A short par 4 doesn't always mean hitting driver for Joost Luiten.

Joost Luiten: “Play the percentages on par 4s”

It’s always tempting to hit driver and get the ball as close as you can to the green on shorter par 4s. But that isn’t always your best chance of making birdie or par, especially when there’s more danger around your driver landing area.

The benefit of a shorter par 4 is you can aim for the wider part of the fairway with less club and still leave a short iron to the green. Sometimes, accept you’ll have a little longer shot in if that makes it easier to hit the fairway with your tee shot.

I’d rather have 130 from the fairway than 100 yards out of the rough or a trap because you can control the ball better.

Valspar Championship betting guide: 5 picks our gambling expert loves

Our expert likes Justin Thomas' prospects this week.

Getty Images

Welcome to our weekly PGA Tour gambling-tips column, featuring picks from GOLF.com’s expert prognosticator Brady Kannon. A seasoned golf bettor and commentator, Kannon is a regular guest on SportsGrid, a syndicated audio network devoted to sports and sport betting. You can follow on Twitter at @LasVegasGolfer, and you can read his picks below for the Valspar Championship, which gets underway Thursday in Palm Harbor, Fla. Along with Kannon’s recommended plays, you’ll also see data from Chirp,  a free-to-play mobile platform  that features a range of games with enticing prizes, giving fans all kinds of ways to engage in the action without risking any money.

The final stop on the PGA Tour’s 2024 Florida Swing takes place this week in Palm Harbor in what will be the 24th edition of the Valspar Championship . As in every year of its existence, the Valspar will once again be played at the Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course, famous for its three finishing holes, known as “The Snake Pit.”

It has been two straight weeks on Tour now that the shortest-priced player on the odds board ( Scottie Scheffler ) has gone on to win. But 16-1 is the shortest price I’m taking this week, as maybe we are due for a longer-shot winner again, like we saw in the first nine weeks of the season.

PGA Tour pro Taylor Moore stands with caddie on tee at 2023 Valspar Championship

2024 Valspar Championship odds: Defending champion is our long-shot pick

The Copperhead Course is a very challenging par 71 that stretches to over 7,300 yards. It really does not have the look of a “Florida course” as it features narrow fairways lined with pine trees, undulation, and elevation changes. Similar to last week at The Players, ball-striking, precision iron play, hitting greens in regulation, and the short game will be key to success this week. Over the last eight editions of the Valspar Championship, the average winning score has been less than 12 under par.

Players will use a number of different clubs off the tee this week because accuracy and position off the tee is crucial. There are five par 3s with distances ranging from 190 to more than 200 yards. This boils down to over half of the approach shots taken this week coming from the neighborhood of 175-200 yards. Hole Proximity from this distance was a key area of focus for me this week as well as Strokes Gained: Approach, SG: Around the Green, Good Drives Gained, Greens in Regulation Gained, Scrambling, and SG: Putting (Bermudagrass).

Courses with similar layouts and skill set requirements to the Copperhead Course are: Sea Island, where they play the RSM Classic, Muirfield Village (the Memorial), TPC Twin Cities (3M Open), TPC Deere Run (John Deere Classic), TPC Southwind, which now holds a leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and Harbour Town, where they play the RBC Heritage.

I’ve landed on five players this week and played them each for both an outright win and a top-20 finish. It was in this column last season that we correctly tipped Taylor Moore. Let’s see if the Valspar Championship can be kind to us once again in 2024.

Justin Thomas (16-1)

I feel like we are maybe getting a little better price here than we would normally, off of Thomas’ missed cut last week at the Players. What is lost in that however, is the fact that JT was gaining over 4.5 strokes on the field last week for SG: Approach before packing his bags for the weekend. It was the short game that let him down. He’s always been excellent around the greens and in fact, ranks 11th in this field over the last 36 rounds for SG: Around the Green. If his iron play continues to be on point, I believe he’ll contend here once again — at an event in which he owns three top-10 finishes and two top-20s. Leading up to the Players, his form was quite good, with four top-12 finishes in five starts. As far as the correlated courses, he has a win at TPC Southwind and a runner up at Muirfield Village, as well as top-10 finishes at Harbour Town and TPC Deere Run.

Doug Ghim (46-1)

The former star at University of Texas continues to pop in the stats when it comes to ball-striking courses and it has paid off for Ghim , specifically at the Players, where he now has three top-30 finishes in four tries, including a 16th-place finish last week. For example, Ghim’s rank in the field this week over the last 36 rounds is eighth for SG: Off the Tee and SG: Approach. He’s 12th in Greens in Regulation Gained and 23rd in SG: Around the Green. He’s top-30 in just about every stat I considered this week. The form is on too as he comes into this week with five straight top-16 finishes this season.

PGA Tour player Doug Ghim raises his hand to his ear oon 16th hole at 2024 WM Phoenix Open

Andrew Putnam (70-1)

Off of his eighth-place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, we were on Putnam last week at TPC Sawgrass where he got off to a good start but faded over the weekend into a 53rd place finish. Oddly enough, it was with the putter where he lost over three strokes to the field last week — but yet is ranked 14th in this field over the last 36 rounds for SG: Putting (Bermudagrass). So I am going to back him again at another course that makes sense for his strengths. Putnam is No. 1 in this field for Greens in Regulation Gained and is second in Good Drives Gained. He ranks 10th in Scrambling and 20th for SG: Approach — all over the last 36 rounds. He owns top-5 finishes at TPC Southwind and Muirfield Village and top-12 finishes at Sea Island and TPC Southwind. Despite last week being somewhat disappointing, he has still only missed one cut in eight starts this season.

Sam Ryder (95-1)

Like Ghim, Ryder also recorded a 16th place finish last week at TPC Sawgrass, where he gained strokes on the field in nearly every category. He began the Florida Swing with a 21st-place finish at the Cognizant Classic. Ryder has finished seventh at both Muirfield Village and TPC Twin Cities. He has a runner-up finish at the John Deere Classic, a 13th at Sea Island, and has a top-20 to his name here at the Valspar Championship. Over the last 36-rounds, he ranks fourth in this field for SG: Approach and is second in Hole Proximity from 175-200 yards.

Lee Hodges (125-1)

What impresses me about Hodges is how he has done on ball-striking type courses this season and done so against “Signature” status fields. He finished 24th at the Genesis Invitational, 12th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and 35th last week at the Players. Against a field much lighter in star-power this week, I like his chances to shine. Growing up in Alabama and playing collegiately for the Crimson Tide, he is very familiar with the Bermudagrass surfaces and that showed up last week where he gained nearly four strokes on the field with the putter. He won last season at TPC Twin Cities, has a 13th-place finish at TPC Southwind, and a 12th-place finish at the Memorial. The timing might be right for Hodges to win on Tour again.

2024 Valspar Championship odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions by golf model that's called 10 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the valspar championship 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

xander-schauffele-pga-golf-usatsi.jpg

The Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida, has hosted the Valspar Championship since 2000, and it will serve as the host again this year when the 2024 Valspar Championship begins on Thursday. Longshots have been thriving at this event in recent years, including Taylor Moore winning at 50-1 last year. Despite winning the title in 2023, Moore is listed at 90-1 to repeat in the 2024 Valspar Championship odds. Xander Schauffele, who came up just short of winning The Players Championship last week, is the 8-1 favorite on the PGA odds board.

Some of the other 2024 Valspar Championship contenders include Sam Burns (11-1), Justin Thomas (12-1) and Jordan Spieth (12-1). Which golfers should you be targeting with your 2024 Valspar Championship bets? Before locking in your 2024 Valspar Championship picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up over $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2024 Valspar Championship field is set, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 Valspar Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the Valspar Championship 2024: Xander Schauffele, a seven-time PGA Tour champion and the odds-on favorite, fails to finish on top of the leaderboard. Schauffele is coming off an impressive T-2 finish at The Players Championship last week. He's now finished T-9 or better in four of his last six starts on the PGA Tour.

However, Schauffele hasn't been victorious at a PGA Tour event since winning the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open. He's also struggled with accuracy off the tee this season, ranking 100th on tour in driving accuracy (58.59%). The Copperhead Course at Innisbrook puts a premium on positioning off the tee, which doesn't bode well for Schauffele's chances to finish on top of the leaderboard.

Another surprise: Beau Hossler, a 45-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Hossler unfortunately etched his name in the record books at TPC Sawgrass during the second round of The Players Championship, hitting the 1,000th ball in the water at the par-3 17th hole since 2003.

He wound up missing the cut in that event, but he had been playing quality golf to open the season. Hossler made the cut in his first six tournaments of 2024, finishing T-6 at the Farmers Insurance Open. He also ranks inside the top 20 on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: putting, making him a valuable longshot betting option this week.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 Valspar Championship picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 25-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Valspar Championship, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the Valspar Championship 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected Valspar Championship leaderboard , all from the model that's nailed 10 golf majors, including last year's Masters and Open Championship.

2024 Valspar Championship odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

T he last leg of the Florida swing, the 2024 Valspar Championship , takes place this week at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Fla. It's not a signature event like the last 2 tournaments were, both won by Scottie Scheffler, but it still features a strong field led by Xander Schauffele .

Below, we look at the 2024 Valspar Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

Schauffele is the betting favorite at Innisbrook, coming in with very short odds of +750. Sam Burns , a 2-time champion of this event, is 2nd with odds of +1100, followed by Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas at +1400. Defending champion Taylor Moore  is +6000 to win in back-to-back years.

The Copperhead Course at Innisbrook is 7,340 yards (par 71) and has yielded a winning score between 7-under and 17-under each year since 2010. The finish at Innisbrook is far from easy, with the final 3 holes being dubbed the "Snake Pit." It's a pair of par 4s (16 and 18), with a 200-plus-yard par 3 (17) in the middle, yielding a scoring average over par each year in that 3-hole stretch.

Valspar Championship – Expert picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 3:12 p.m. ET.

Sungjae Im (+2200)

Im hit a rough patch this season where he didn't finish better than 44th in 5 straight events, but he seems to have found something in the last 2 weeks. He finished 18th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T-31 at the Players Championship, and he comes to Innisbrook where he's come in 4th and 29th in 2 career starts.

Nick Taylor (+3300)

Taylor just missed out on a top-25 finish at the Players due to a 3rd-round 76, coming in 26th after shooting 66 and 68 in the 1st 2 rounds. He has 3 top-25s and a win already this season, including a T-12 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Taylor finished 10th here last year.

Valspar Championship picks – Contenders

Doug ghim (+4500).

It's been 2 months since Ghim finished outside the top 20. That's hard to believe, but it's true. He's finished between 8th and 16th in each of his last 5 starts and now ranks 4th in total strokes gained this season. At +4500, he's a bargain.

Keith Mitchell (+4000)

Mitchell has only played here twice and he made the cut both times, finishing 11th back in 2017. He's 7-for-8 in cuts made this season and has finished in the top 25 four times already, ranking 33rd in total strokes gained – a very respectable number for Cashmere Keith.

Valspar Championship picks – Long shots

K.h. lee (+12500).

Lee finished 21st here in 2021 and 19th last year, which are the only 2 official starts he's made in this event (WD in 2020). He's been hot and cold this season, finishing in the top 30 three times and missing the cut in his 4 other starts, but that's the type of player you want to target as a long shot.

Matt NeSmith (+12500)

NeSmith has only played this event twice but his record is good. He came in 21st in 2021 and 3rd in 2022 before skipping it last year. He may have found his game at the Players, where he finished T-26 on Sunday, so he could head into Innisbrook with some momentum.

Five Things to Know About the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship

Rose zhang returns to lpga tour after breaking for stanford studies.

  • Seri Pak Championship
  • Tournament News

Ruoning Yin of China imitates a selfie as she poses with the trophy after winning the DIO Implant LA Open

If there is one word that best describes the LPGA Tour’s return to action at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, it would be, well, return. Not only does the LPGA arrive back in the United States to begin a four-month campaign of competition that will see players crisscross the country, but it also marks the reemergence of one of the game’s preeminent stars as Pak is lending her name to the Los Angeles Tour stop for the very first time, just as the best in women’s golf have all seemed to finally aligned their schedules to go head-to-head in Hollywood. Here’s a closer look at the field of 144 players vying for a piece of the $2 million purse that is up for grabs at Palos Verdes Golf Club.

Pak is Back

Since Seri Pak retired from the LPGA Tour in 2016, sightings of the World Golf Hall of Fame member are few and far between. But with the addition of Pak’s name to one of the Tour’s two annual L.A. stops and her newfound role as tournament host, her sheer presence this week will provide a whole new generation of rising stars a chance to learn from and get to know one of the pioneers of women’s golf who changed the game globally. “Mentoring the next generation of golfers and giving back to the game I love is at the core of everything I do,” Pak said upon being announced as host of the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship. The Korean superstar won 39 times worldwide, including 25 times on the LPGA Tour, five of which were major titles. Pak joins fellow Hall of Fame member Annika Sorenstam and major champion Michelle Wie West as the third player to currently host an LPGA Tour event.

Stars Are Out in Hollywood

A group of American stars in Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson, Lilia Vu and Rose Zhang are making their much-anticipated returns to competition at Palos Verdes Golf Club. For Korda, it’s the first time she’s competing on Tour since January when she won the second event of the season at the LPGA Drive On Championship after defeating Lydia Ko in a playoff. Korda skipped the Asian swing to take some time to travel to her family’s native home in the Czech Republic, spent some time bonding with her newborn nephew and shared social media posts fine-tuning her game. She finished tied for fifth last year in this event.

Like Korda, Thompson last competed on Tour at the LPGA Drive On Championship, where she picked up a tie for 16th result in her season-opener, but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t been competing elsewhere. She teed it up on the Ladies European Tour at the Aramco Team Series – Tampa and also appeared in the made-for-TV competition, Capital One’s The Match, alongside Zhang, who is also making a return to action in Los Angeles. Zhang has been away from the Tour studying at Stanford, and this week will make her first start since picking up a tie for seventh at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions in January.

And while Thompson, Korda and Zhang have taken some time away, Vu did make the trip to compete in Asia only to be sidelined by illness at the second stop in Singapore and then forced to withdraw again the following week due to injury in the People’s Republic of China. Hopefully, a healthy Vu will be ready for her return to action in L.A. where she finished tied for 11th last season.

Yin Defends

One year ago, Ruoning Yin was relatively unknown at No. 146 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, but she quickly became one of the game’s rising stars by holding off Georgia Hall for a one-stroke victory at Palos Verdes Golf Club to win for the first time on the LPGA Tour. Yin’s win came early in her career in just her 20th start, and she quickly etched her name in the history books as she became only the second player from the People’s Republic of China to win on Tour, joining Shanshan Feng. The victory became a springboard to a breakout season for Yin who went on to win her first major title at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club and spent six weeks ranked No. 1 in the world. Yin has had a quiet start to her 2024 campaign, and she will be looking to pick up her first top 10 of the season as she works to defend her title in L.A.

Long-Awaited Returns

New mothers Sophia Popov and Caroline Masson will be adjusting to life as #LPGAMoms as they make their comeback at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship. Popov last competed on the LPGA Tour in August 2022 after stepping away to rehab a right shoulder injury. During her time away, the 2020 AIG Women’s Open champion revealed that she was pregnant with her first child and has been absent from competition while on maternity leave since giving birth to her daughter, Maya, in June 2023. Popov made her official return to competition two weeks ago on the LET at the Aramco Team Series – Tampa where she spoke about feeling nervous being back on the first tee, the challenges of juggling caretaking with playing and learning to take care of not just her daughter but herself. Masson, who last competed in November 2022, will be back in action this week for the first time following the birth of her son, Benton, in April 2023.

Additionally, Lizette Salas, who has been sidelined with a back injury since the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links, will enjoy a homecoming of sorts as she tees it up for the first time since July at this week’s FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship. Salas grew up an hour’s drive north of Palos Verdes Golf Club in Azusa, Calif., and is quite familiar with Palos Verdes as she often practices at the club. She recorded her lowest round of the 2023 LPGA Tour season at the venue last year, recording a 64 in the second round, and went on to finish in a tie for 13th, her season-best result in 2023.

What’s Next?

The FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship kicks off a stretch of three consecutive events for the LPGA Tour in what will be a ramp-up to the first major championship of the season, The Chevron Championship. Following this week’s stop in L.A, the Tour heads to Arizona for the inaugural Ford Championship presented by KCC, and then players move on to Las Vegas for the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards, which is shifting from its prior May date on the schedule to March. Then, the Tour will enjoy a one-week break before traveling to Houston for the first major of the year.

World Golf Tour: Tips to help you on the real-world courses

World Golf Tour: Tips to help you on the real-world courses

Click, click, drop it in the hole

World Golf Tour is maybe the only golf game to use 3D photorealistic georeferencing in what has become a signature aspect of the game. That's how it gets its HD look. It's essentially like playing golf within images of courses. Speaking of which, WGT is also one of the few games to include real-world courses.

Some of the courses include juggernauts like Pebble Beach, St. Andrews, Bandon Dunes, and Merion. Most courses allow you to play a select amount of holes. So, that could be either the front nine or back nine, while others let you play three random holes.

The gameplay has the classic 3-click swing approach which has been popular in golf games for decades. And although these style of control is very familiar, there are still some strategic elements to keep in mind. This, especially since you're playing on real courses, including challenging ones like Kiawah Island and Bethpage Black.

Get used to the 3-click

tour tips golf

Just because it's a recognizable concept, doesn't mean it's necessarily easy to master in WGT . Plus, if you're totally new to 3-click golf or golf games period, then it's good to get used to the controls. The cool thing is that all you need to do is press one button a few times. This is good if you want a more casual mobile gaming experience.

With this gameplay method, it's all about timing. Getting the power right on tee shots is the easy part, but making sure you're accurate will be a tad trickier. If you're too early or too late on the third click, then you'll hit your shot way right or left.

You don't need to be perfect on the last click, but if you can get the cursor near the sweet spot on the meter, then you'll be gravy. Practice on three-hole mini-games or get in a practice round and work on the three-click method. Hit some shots, get a feel for it, and you'll be set.

Read the slopes of the green

The greens in WGT can be pesky, especially since they clone the ones of the famous real-world courses. Make sure to read the greens by taking a look at the grid that covers them. If you've played golf games before, then you know what I'm talking about, but if not, then I'll explain.

The grid that is shown on the green will little beads on them. These beads will move in a certain direction based on the slope of the green. If the beads are heading right, then that means you'll need to aim your putt more towards the left and the same if it's the other way.

Keep an eye on the speed of the beads too. If they're moving fast, then that means you have to move much more to the opposite direction of the beads. Another thing is to look at the color of the grid. If it's red on a certain part of the slope, then that means it's an uphill putt. Blue means it's downhill and green means it's flat.

Use putt preview when necessary

Putting is likely the trickiest area of WGT but luckily, there is an aid that can help you out on the course. Putt previews can be utilized to help you read the greens. This a great tool that helps to make putting easier in the game. However, it will not hold your hand necessarily.

It would still be wise to read the slope of the green before using this feature. It will help make the preview more accurate. If you want, you can use the preview from the jump and you'll just have to remember which angle it was going for you to adjust your aim.

If you can read the grid, and try and put yourself in the best position you can, your preview should be right on point or close to it. The only thing you need to make sure of is having the right amount of power on your putting stroke. If you get that down, then the ball will drop right in the cup.

Club up or use spin

For approach shots, it's a good idea to see where your shot could end up when using a certain club. There are many instances where you need to club up or club down. For example, if you're using a 5-iron and it shows that the landing zone is going to be well past the green, then you should probably use a smaller club like a 6-iron instead.

If you're in a spot where clubbing up or down won't help you, then, try to use spin on your golf ball. To do this, just click on the ball on the lower left part of your screen. This will open up a small window with a red dot on the middle of the ball.

Move the dot down to provide more spin. Lifting it up will dish out less spin. By using backspin, this will allow the ball to slow down or roll backwards when it lands. So, if you know that you might overshoot your ball, then it should remain safely on the green if you use the right amount of spin.

The Valspar Championship 2024: TV Schedule Today, How to Watch, Stream All the PGA Tour Golf From Anywhere

The Tour heads to Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead Course in Florida.

tour tips golf

After last weekend's action at Sawgrass, the PGA Tour makes the short journey to the outskirts of Tampa for the 2024 Valspar Championship at the Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, Florida.

While there's an inevitable drop down from last weekend's stellar lineup, there's still set to be a host of big names ready to take on the 7,300-yard, par 71 course this weekend.

Xander Schauffele will be hoping to overcome his Sawgrass disappointment after agonizingly missing out on winning the Players Championship last time out. He takes on a field that also includes Jordan Spieth, Keegan Bradley, Justin Thomas, Tony Finau and last year's champion Taylor Moore.

Keep reading to find out the best live TV streaming services to use to watch each day of the tournament live wherever you are in the world.

How to watch the the Valspar Championship 2024 online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the tournament locally, you may need a different way to watch -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the tournament. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, nonblackout area. Most VPNs, like our Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Quick tips for streaming the Valspar Championship 2024 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble getting the tournament after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend  Brave .
