Kevin from ‘The Office’ is finally coming to Rochester

brian baumgartner tour

It’s been a long time coming, but Brian Baumgartner, who played slow-taking, chili-spilling accountant Kevin Malone on NBC’s “The Office,” is coming to Rochester.

The actor will be at Innovative Field for Office Night Wednesday, Aug. 23, when the Red Wings have a 6:45 p.m. game against the Worcester Red Sox. Tickets ($13 to $25) are on sale on the team’s website, milb.com/Rochester .

Baumgartner originally was scheduled to visit in 2020, but the season was canceled because of COVID.

In keeping with “The Office” theme, the Aug. 23 game will feature “the Works Pretzel," Flonkerton (a fictional game played during “The Office” Olympics) and Poor Richard’s Pub, the dive bar where “Office” characters went to drown their sorrows.

The Office Night the team hosted in 2019 was one of its most successful promotions. Three-thousand people lined up to meet Leslie David Baker, who played disgruntled paper salesman Stanley Hudson on the wildly popular sitcom, at a game against Scranton Wilkes-Barre that drew 12,248.

“(The) line to meet him was the longest line we’ve had for any appearance of a celebrity guest since I’ve been here — any football or baseball or entertainment icon,” the team’s general manager Dan Mason said at that time.

The turnout was so massive that the Red Wings didn’t take Baker away for the first pitch or an on-field interview, as planned. Instead, he spent three hours straight meeting fans and taking pictures with them.

Post-“Office,” which originally aired from 2005 to 2013, Baumgartner has found big success on a smaller screen. In 2021, he made more than $1 million on the Cameo app, which offers personalized messages from celebrities. He also has hosted podcasts about “The Office” and authored a chili cookbook.

Exclusive Campus Visit by Brian Baumgartner Sept. 15

Best-selling author Brian Baumgartner, who played Kevin Malone on The Office will be on campus for an exclusive Q and A session and book signing with University of Scranton students, faculty and staff on Thursday, Sept. 15. His latest book “Seriously Good Chili Cookbook” publishes on Sept. 13.

“The Office” cast member and New York Times best-selling author Brian Baumgartner will visit The University of Scranton on Thursday, Sept. 15, for an exclusive Q and A with students, faculty and staff, followed by book signing just for members of the University community. The event comes two-days after publication of his latest book, “Seriously Good Chili Cookbook.”

Baumgartner was on campus in November 2021 for a student Q and A and book signing for his then just published book “Welcome to Dunder Mifflin: The Ultimate Oral History of The Office,” which became a New York Times best-seller.

Baumgartner will be on campus as part of a tour to promote his second book, “Seriously Good Chili Cookbook.” In real life, Baumgartner is “a true chili master and aficionado,” who is “just as serious as his fictional counterpart about making the most perfect pot of chili.” His first cookbook features 177 chili recipes hand-picked by Baumgartner. Written in a humorous and friendly tone, the book showcases specific styles of chili, including Texas chili, Cincinnati chili, vegetarian chili, black bean chili and home-style chili, as well as other regional and international variations and a bonus recipe of the official “Kevin’s Famous Chili” recipe from The Office. The book is also peppered with fun chili facts.

Baumgartner played Kevin Malone on The Office, which originally aired on NBC from 2005 to 2013, was among the most popular shows on Netflix and can now be seen on Peacock. He was among the cast members who visited the University for The Office Convention in 2007 and The Wrap Party in 2013. He was also on campus for the taping of his popular podcast on the history of The Office , which was the precursor to his first book, “Welcome to Dunder Mifflin: The Ultimate Oral History of The Office.”

Called “The definitive history of The Office” by E! News , “Welcome to Dunder Mifflin,” co-authored with Ben Silverman, the executive producer of The Office, is based on hundreds of hours of exclusive interviews with the actors, creators, writers, producers, directors, network executives and crew members of The Office, who share their favorite stories of the making of what became the most-watched series in the world.

Pre-registration is required to attend the Q & A , which begins on Sept. 15 at 4:30 p.m. in the McIlhenny Ballroom of the DeNaples Center. A book signing immediately follows at 5:30 p.m. Both events require Royal cards for access.

“Seriously Good Chili Cookbook,” published by Fox Chapel, can be pre-ordered at the University’s book store or its webpage, with copies available prior to the book signing.

Two public book-signing events are planned for area residents with Baumgartner the following day, Sept. 16. He will be at a book signing at Books-A-Million at the Viewmont Mall in Dickson City from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Baumgartner will also be at a book signing at PNC Field on the Geisinger Plaza (inside the main entrance) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Friday evening event will also feature a Backyard BBQ with chili and fireworks.

‘The Office’s Brian Baumgartner ready for golf, Greenville

Mike mcmillan.

  • June 8, 2022

brian baumgartner tour

The 2022 BMW Charity Pro-Am golf tournament will feature a number of professionals joined by celebrities like baseball Hall of Famers Ken Griffey Jr. and Ozzy Smith, along with TV stars like Larry the Cable Guy and Anthony Anderson of “Black-ish.”

But for Brian Baumgartner, famous for his portrayal of Kevin Malone on the American sitcom “The Office” that ran from 2005-2013, the Greenville tournament will be a sort-of homecoming.

Baumgartner, who grew up in Atlanta, would travel to town to see cousins when he was a child. The Greenville of today, however, is a far more dynamic and interesting place than the one he remembers.

“It’s a fun town,” he said. “Greenville is a really underrated and unknown Southern town.” His go-to place when he’s in town is Halls Chophouse, a high-end steak and seafood restaurant on Main Street. He said his parents now live in South Carolina, and it’s a good opportunity to get together with family when he’s in town.

His main goal, however, is to hit the greens at this year’s BMW’s annual charity golf event , which will benefit five local charities.

Charities benefitting from the golf event

  • Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute
  • Roper Mountain Science Center
  • Mobile Meals of Spartanburg
  • Meyer Center for Special Children
  • The Cancer Society of Greenville County

“Obviously, I expect to win,” Baumgartner said. “Actually, I’m going to have a great time playing with some great players and have a little bit of fun.” He’s no stranger to golf tournaments, as he’s been a part of the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, California, for 15 years.

“I could probably play in something every week,” he said.

He’s been a part of the BMW tournament for about five years, going back to when organizers invited him to join a few years before that. Scheduling conflicts prevented Baumgartner from appearing, but now he said he makes sure his calendar is clear each year when the tournament rolls around.

“It’s a unique format where celebrities get to play with pros,” he said. “I’m mostly trying to stay out of their way.”

Baumgartner and other celebrities will play alongside golfers on the Korn Ferry Tour , a developmental organization for the PGA, who will compete for $750,000 in prizes. He said he’s always impressed with the talent he sees from the pros.

When Baumgartner isn’t hitting the greens, he can be seen — or heard, rather — in the Netflix animated series “Trash Truck.” He’s also the host of podcasts “The Office Deep Dive” and a new one titled “ Off the Beat ,” where he interviews celebrities like Jon Hamm, Kevin Nealon and Alyson Hannigan.

And much like his character Kevin on “The Office,” whose chili mishap in one episode became an Internet meme, he’s a chili aficionado, and his new cookbook, “Seriously Good Chili Cookbook,” will hit stores in September.

As to whether the iconic cast of “The Office” will return for any more episodes in a long-rumored reunion show, Baumgartner hints it’s a distinct possibility.

“We all get along; we all stay in touch,” he said. “There’s a good chance the band gets back together for another song.”

Why was ‘The Office’ so successful? Kevin Malone, aka Brian Baumgartner, seeks answers in a new book

brian baumgartner tour

The final episode of “The Office” aired on May 16, 2013. And yet the beloved mockumentary has remained a steady favorite in the years since: In 2020, it was the most streamed show of the year , according to Nielsen. What explains the comedy’s enduring appeal? Michael’s endearing antics? The Pam and Jim saga? Dwight’s inept ambition?

Kevin Malone, the show’s slow-talking accountant, may seem an unlikely character to come up with the definitive answer, but Brian Baumgartner, who played the deliciously dull bean counter, has taken a crack at it in a new book, “ Welcome to Dunder Mifflin .”

The 48-year-old actor teamed up with producer Ben Silverman to create a book written in a style that’s less like a Hollywood nostalgia trip and more like a true-crime mystery. “Instead of why is this person missing or who killed this person or whatever, the mystery is: Why is this show now more watched than anything else?” Baumgartner said in a phone interview.

Baumgartner began by conducting hundreds of hours of interviews, with everyone from creator Greg Daniels and star Steve Carell to hairstylist Kim Ferry and cinematographer Matt Sohn, for the podcasts “An Oral History of The Office” and “The Office Deep Dive.” In “Welcome to Dunder Mifflin,” excerpts from those interviews are interwoven with follow-up conversations, exclusive set photos and fascinating factoids — including the casting choices that almost were. The result is a 464-page tome that is the ultimate behind-the-scenes account.

Earlier this month, Baumgartner discussed his approach to the book, what he learned in all those interviews and whether he cracked that central mystery.

( This conversation has been edited for length and clarity. )

Q: Your preface poses the book’s key question: “Why is ‘The Office’ different?” Why did you want to approach this oral history in that way?

A: To me, art on every level — from theater, film, television, whatever — is infinitely more interesting when it’s about a question as opposed to an answer, right? If I just tell you why this is great, that’s not so interesting. So let’s explore what happened and why now it’s popular.

Q: One of my favorite passages was when Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais, the creators of the original British version of “The Office,” got into the nitty-gritty of why they find cringe humor so funny. How important was it to offer that kind of insightful conversation about the show, and not just a grab-bag of behind-the-scenes tidbits?

A: One of the most interesting conversations, which also came from Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais, really had to do with the fact that they did something that had never been done before, which was they inverted the love story between Jim and Pam [Tim and Dawn in the U.K. version]. As opposed to it being central — which it is on every other television show — they inverted that into the background. Yet, that is an iconic love story that people are still talking about today. But it existed in the corner, and they brought the buffoon [Carell’s Michael Scott] forward. For me, that exploration is vital, as opposed to just, “Oh, when we were shooting this scene, this is something that happened behind the scenes.”

If you hate office life, you’ll love — and laugh at — this novel

Q: How would you describe the dynamic of being both the interviewer facilitating the conversations and, as an actor from the show, one of the subjects that this book examines?

A: There was a substantial conversation early on about who should conduct these interviews. Should we get a real journalist in here to do this? And I very quickly arrived at [the conclusion] that I may not be a journalist, and I may not know exactly the right questions to ask, but what I did know was that I was going to get people to open up in a unique way. It doesn’t mean better, it doesn’t mean worse. But I thought, “If I do these interviews ... we’re going to be able to share stories that are unique and different.”

Q: All these years later, people presumably could speak more candidly about such topics as the 2007-2008 Writers Guild strike or the relationship with NBC, which came close to canceling the show early on. Did you learn anything new during those conversations?

A: To me, one of the most beautiful, touching moments in the book is when a character in the book that nobody knows, Laverne Caracuzzi-Milazzo, our makeup artist, told me that Greg Daniels sent everyone on the crew a check while the writers’ strike was going on. I had no idea. I’d never heard that. No one ever told me that.

Q: Having gone through the process of doing these interviews, releasing the podcasts and putting together the book, what ultimately is your answer to the question of what makes “The Office” different?

Brent Spiner, of ‘Star Trek’ fame, has plenty of stories about his co-stars. But are they true?

A: Well, we were making a show for people who were in offices and could relate to that, and we were never talking about a show for young people. That was never a conversation we were having. But my real discovery through this were the parallels between an unreasonable boss, who makes his employees do unreasonable things, sitting next to people that they don’t choose to sit next to day after day, and an unreasonable teacher, who makes their students do unreasonable things, sitting next to people day after day and year after year, that they don’t necessarily choose to. I think that’s the answer. That and Ben Silverman saying, “Well, it’s just . . . funny.”

Fictional WSOP Bracelet Winner, Brian Baumgartner Doubles Up

Mar 1, 2008

Brian Baumgartner, who has been waiting patiently from the short stack, finally gets the rest of his chips in the pot with [JsJc] on a [QhQc9hJd5h] board, doubling up with a full house.

Baumgartner’s patient and equally methodical style of play comes as no surprise considering that Baumgartner plays Kevin Malone on NBC’s hit show, The Office, where Kevin is the fictional 2002 $2,500 No-Limit Deuce-to-Seven WSOP Bracelet Winner. In the real world that bracelet belongs to Allen Cunningham, and although Baumgartner may not be a professional poker player in real life, he gets to play one on tv…and it shows.

This Office star explains why he has to gamble on the golf course

In a famous episode of the hit NBC sitcom The Office , Jim, Kevin and Andy take out prospective client, Phil Maguire, for a round of golf to woo him into giving his business to Dunder Mifflin. That’s when normally aloof Kevin seems quite knowledgeable on the different golf money games .

After Maguire poses a wager of $10 a hole, Kevin aggressively counters back.

“What are we talkin’? Skins? Acey deucy? Bingo Bango Bongo? Sandies? Barkies? Arnies? Wolf? What?” Kevin says in The Office season 4 episode “Job Fair.”

There’s a good reason for Kevin, played by Brian Baumgartner , knows all these games: he’s played them, and plays them quite often.

As the actor told GOLF’s Subpar co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz on this week’s episode, when presented this choice of hitting balls or playing nine holes, Baumgartner chooses the latter, and there are usually stakes.

Celebrities at the American Century championship golf tournament

How the stars stack up: 2023 American Century Championship celebrity handicaps

“Golf is not worth playing if you don’t have money on the line,” he said on the podcast. “If I’m playing there is a wager of some kind. And if for some reason there’s not, I’m not interested.”

Baumgartner explained that there doesn’t need to be “ big money ” on the line, but there needs to be something at stake or it’s hard for him to really focus. Baumgartner says it’s partly because he has trouble focusing on practice.

He said he needs consequences in order to perform his best.

“If there’s nothing on the line and I hit a shot, then it just becomes that mental. Like, well, I wasn’t really that— that doesn’t count. Like there’s no consequence to it. So you drop another ball and hit another one and you’re not really focused,” Baumgartner, who plays to an 11 handicap, said. “Let me just try that shot again thing that doesn’t work for me.”

And while Baumgartner didn’t want to be cliche by reciting the quote from the Office episode, he did admit his games do typically take the form of Wolf, Hammer or Nassau. Although it’s more often a front/back/overall Nassau.

And that shouldn’t be surprising, as his character, Kevin Malone, cleaned up in “Job Fair,” taking $120 from Jim and $230 from prospective client Phil! Luckily, that didn’t stop Jim from getting Phil’s business.

For more from Baumgartner, including his favorite moments from playing in the American Century Championship and how The Office changed his life, listen to the full episode below.

Soooo Interesting

Every interview is excellent . Many of your guests I have not been familiar with . But I was happy to hear their life story !

Look forward to it every week!

Love this podcast! I enjoy hearing from all the guests and learning more about the behind the scenes, especially after rewatching the British and US versions multiple times during the pandemic. Always great to hear the perspectives from so many departments. Also Brian, I met you in 2018 at comic con in Philly and it was amazing! Edit: we need an episode with Mindy Kaling pleaseeee!!! Edit 2: now that this has turned into off the beat it’s a lot more variety which is fun and I do enjoy it! However some guests I honestly have never heard of or don’t find myself very interested in. I feel like some are random and not really connected to the theme of comedy happening off the beat.

Surprisingly interesting.

Very much enjoy this. Especially his choice of guests. Recommended !

Twin cities rocker brian setzer to reunite with stray cats in 2024, including two minnesota dates.

After a lengthy hiatus that found him struggling with tinnitus and sticking to his suburban Twin Cities home, rockabilly stalwart Brian Setzer will return to the road in a big and loud way in 2024 on a reunion tour with his globally renowned '80s band the Stray Cats.

Setzer and original bandmates Slim Jim Phantom and Lee Rocker — childhood friends from Massapequa, N.Y. — will play their first shows together in five years starting in late July on a tour that includes two outdoor dates in Minnesota.

The "Rock This Town" and "Stray Cat Strut" hitmakers are set to play Bluestem Center for the Arts Amphitheater in Moorhead on Aug. 8 , followed by a gig near St. Cloud at the Ledge Amphitheater on Aug. 9 . Tickets for both shows go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. at prices not yet announced, with presale options beginning Wednesday.

A Minnesota resident for around two decades now — his wife Julie Reiten Setzer grew up here — Setzer sidelined his usual holiday tour with the Brian Setzer Orchestra in 2019 after being hit with tinnitus following the Stray Cats' 40th anniversary run earlier that year. He took a first step back to touring last year with a new rockabilly trio supporting his solo album, "The Devil Always Collects."

In a statement released with the Stray Cats tour announcement, Setzer said of his old bandmates, "I've always said that we all grew up in the same neighborhood, so there's an instant feeling between us when we play. It allows us to be confident and spontaneous. Man, that's priceless."

Chris Riemenschneider has been covering the Twin Cities music scene since 2001, long enough for Prince to shout him out during "Play That Funky Music (White Boy)." The St. Paul native authored the book "First Avenue: Minnesota's Mainroom" and previously worked as a music critic at the Austin American-Statesman in Texas.
