When is the best time to book a cruise?

Erica Silverstein

The best time to book a cruise is when you've done your planning, picked a ship and found a cruise fare that fits your budget and offers good value. But that doesn't stop vacationers from wondering if they'd find a cheaper price if they wait to book tomorrow, next week or next month.

I'd love to give you a magic date to circle in red on your calendar, so you'd know for sure that was the best time to book a cruise. The truth is there's no one best day, but knowing a few things about how cruise lines price cabins and when they tend to run promotions will help you identify high-value deals. When you see one, you'll know it's as good a time as any to book your next cruise vacation.

What is the best day to book a cruise?

Everyone wants to know the cheapest day to book travel — as if fares drop like clockwork on Wednesday morning and rise with the sun on Thursday. It doesn't work that way.

It used to be that lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line would offer midweek sales on select cruises every Tuesday or Wednesday. These lines still offer the occasional flash sale, but they don't always fall on the same day of the week.

Within a given cruise sale's promotional period, I've seen cabin prices fluctuate daily and I've seen them stay the same for a week. It all depends on how many cabins a cruise line has allocated for a specific fare class and whether those rooms happen to sell out or not.

I could tell you that it's cheaper to book a cruise at the beginning of a sale because availability is greatest. However, if the line sees a certain cabin category on a specific ship failing to sell as expected, it could drop rates halfway into the sale period.

The exception is world cruises (and other highly anticipated and publicized short-season sailings, like Great Lakes cruises ). World cruises have sold out within hours, even with price tags of $150,000 per couple.

What is the best month to book a cruise?

If there's no best day to book a cruise for the best deal, you might think there's a best month. While you can find cheap cruises any month you look, I can give you some pointers about which months are most likely to feature cruise sales with value-added promotions.

The best months to book a cruise are January through March, when nearly every cruise line launches some kind of "wave season" promotion , and November through December, when Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales often start well before Thanksgiving and end days or weeks after. You might find a cheap cruise deal or a fare packed with extras (like complimentary beverage packages, free kids fares or reduced deposits).

Are you guaranteed to find the cheapest, most freebie-laden pricing during these months? Of course not! Cruise lines sometimes inflate prices before a sale, so deals for 30% or 50% off may not be as good as you think. Or, the cruise line may offer its best fares in a one-off sale at another time of year.

Whether the winter months are the best time to book a cruise depends on which itinerary you're hoping to book and how popular that sailing is that year. In a year when Alaska cruises are popular, the wave season promotions in January and February might not be especially good because the lines don't need to discount to fill cabins. But if Alaska cruise bookings are soft, the wave season specials could be the best of the year as cruise lines pull out all the tricks to fill ships.

What is the best time of year to book a cruise?

I could say that winter is the best time of year to book a cruise because that would cover the late-fall Thanksgiving week sales and wave season promotions. I can guarantee that your cruise line will offer some promotions during the winter, but that doesn't mean it's the best time to book.

If you want to book a solo or family cabin on a Mediterranean cruise in July, you likely want to book much earlier than January for the most availability and the best prices. As I said earlier, great sales and deals can pop up year-round, including on other holidays such as Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.

How far in advance should I book a cruise?

All this talk of the best time to book a cruise raises the question of how far in advance you should book. The key to the answer is recognizing that cruise lines adjust pricing as cabins sell out (or fail to do so) on any given ship and itinerary.

Cruise lines want you to book as early as possible. Not only do they get cash in hand sooner, in the form of your deposit, but they can rest easy when a ship sells out early, knowing they don't have to work to get people to come on board and spend more money.

Therefore, cruise lines often offer their best fares when bookings open to incentivize travelers to book early. Cruises open for bookings a year or more in advance. For example, as of March 2023, I can book a cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line through spring or fall of 2025, depending on the ship.

Now, it might be the itinerary I'm looking at won't be popular, and the cruise line will lower the fare closer to sailing. Or, the itinerary will sell well, and prices will only go up from the original price. I can't know for sure, though I can guess that peak-season trips to popular destinations on a newer cruise ship are more likely to sell quickly. Christmas and New Year's cruises , top suites and limited specialty cabins (such as solo and family cabins ) also tend to sell out early.

If you ask me, the answer to "How far in advance should I book a cruise?" is as early as possible for the most popular cruises and cabin categories and at least nine months before most sailings.

Can I book a cruise at the last minute?

Yes, you can book a cruise at the last minute, but that doesn't mean you should.

In the cruise industry, a last-minute booking is considered any cruise purchased after final payment is due, generally 60 to 90 days before sailing. That means you have to pay the entire cruise fare at the time of booking rather than paying a deposit and the rest at a later date.

The final payment date is a day of reckoning for cruise salespeople. It's the last date that undecided travelers can cancel without penalty. Once final payment is due, the cruise line has a more accurate picture of who is likely to sail (since once you pay, you're likely to go, barring an emergency). At that point, the line can see if the ship is comfortably full (meaning it can hold prices steady or raise them because it's not worried about filling the ship) or is too empty (meaning it better run some promotions to get more folks in cabins).

If it's the latter, that's when you get last-minute deals on cruise ships with unsold cabins. However, even if that last-minute cruise is cheap, the 11th-hour airfare or pre-cruise hotel booking could eat into your savings.

For the real procrastinators out there, the absolute last day you can book a cruise before its departure has changed over the years. Currently, a cruise line could accept a booking mere hours before sailing, as long as boarding is still open and the ship's manifest (the list of passengers and crew members on board) has not been submitted to the authorities.

In actuality, most cruise lines will sell available cabins through the day before sailing, but limit or deny same-day bookings. Depending on the line, you may only be able to book cruises within a day or two of departure directly with the cruise line's reservations department.

Booking a cruise just days before sailing should only be attempted by travelers within an easy drive of the cruise port. You should also make sure that you have time to get any necessary documentation, as well as make related travel plans.

How do I know if I'm getting a good deal when I book?

Regardless of when you're booking a cruise, you'll want to know if the fare you're paying for your vacation at sea is a cheap deal, average or overpriced. Sadly, the best way to know that is to do your research.

Tracking prices allows you to watch the rise and fall of cruise fares over time, so when the fare drops, you'll recognize the price as a deal and be able to pounce on it. This strategy is best if you plan to book early and aren't as concerned about the ship selling out immediately.

Don't forget to watch for value-added promotions, as well. For example, Norwegian's Free at Sea promotion currently includes six booking perks (free beverage package, shore excursion credit, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, extra guests and buy-one-get-one-free airfare).

If that sounds like too much math homework, I recommend that you call a travel agent . A cruise-knowledgeable travel adviser can help you plan your trip and determine if the current pricing is good or if you should hold out for a deal.

Bottom line

I'll say it again: The best time to book a cruise is when you see a price and promotion that seems like a good value to you. If you feel like you're getting your money's worth on a cruise purchase, go ahead and book that dream vacation. There's no way to be absolutely sure you're buying when the cruise fare is the lowest possible price with the maximum number of fare inclusions.

Sometimes you may be forced to choose between the cheapest possible fare and one that offers a greater total value, given the included perks. Knowing when cruise lines will likely run promotions will help you strategize, but sales can pop up anytime — and not every promotion offers the cheapest fares.

Stop trying to game the system and focus instead on planning the perfect cruise vacation you and your loved ones will reminisce about long after you've forgotten how much you paid for the trip.

When it comes to finding cruise deals, timing is important. Like other forms of travel, there are certain windows when travelers can find particularly good fares – and others when it's harder.

"If you're looking for a deal over Christmas, you're probably not going to find it," said Stephanie Goldberg-Glazer, chief experience officer and owner of the travel agency Live Well, Travel Often. "That's just how it is."

But arming themselves with that knowledge and remaining flexible can help travelers book the cruise they want at the right price. Here's what travelers should know about the cheapest times to take a cruise.

What is the cheapest time to go on a cruise?

Travelers can often find deals by sailing when kids are in school and steering clear of major holidays, Goldberg-Glazer said.   For instance, cruises for the week after New Year's can be half the price of those during the holiday with a wider selection of cabins.

"Once you book, there's just generally more availability a little bit longer because the holidays book up so quickly," she said.

But remember that destinations can be seasonal, which may narrow the window of opportunity. The Alaska cruise season, for example, lasts from May to September, while the Caribbean season typically stretches from November through April.

Passengers may also find bargains on repositioning cruises – when cruise lines move ships from one part of the world to another between seasons. Those sailings tend to occur in the spring and fall, and travelers can find them labeled as such on cruise line websites or through a travel agent.

Prospective cruisers can usually find "a lot of good deals at the beginning of the year" during wave season , Goldberg-Glazer said. That period typically lasts from January until March.

However, the optimal time to book may depend on when you plan to sail. Goldberg-Glazer recommended booking as far in advance as possible.

"I think that, realistically, if you can book a year or more in advance and block off the time and know that's going to work for you, then that's perfect," she said.

She cautioned travelers booking nonrefundable deposits – which they may not get back if they have to change their plans – to be certain the reservation they make will work for them. But those booking refundable deposits "have nothing to lose," she said.

Answered: What’s the Cheapest Time to Take a Cruise?

One of the biggest draws in cruising is that it can be an affordable vacation. Sail the right time of year and some itineraries can be had for as little as a couple of hundred dollars.

Carnival Sunshine and Liberty in port

In return, you get your room, meals, entertainment, and the opportunity to sail to exotic foreign ports. The same vacation with each piece paid for individually would be considerably higher.

That said, there is little argument that the price of cruising has risen sharply since trips returned and, at least for now, the era of ultra-cheap cruises is in the past.

If you’re wanting to save money, however, there are definite times of year where it is much cheaper to sail than others . We analyzed cruise prices to show you the least expensive time of year to head to sea.

The Rule of Thumb on Cruise Prices (When You’ll Pay Less)

There are cruises all over the planet from the far reaches of Asia to Antarctica. Without a doubt, the most popular place to sail, however, is the Caribbean. So while each part of the world may have variances in the cheapest time to sail there, we’re going to focus on trips to Mexico, The Bahamas, and the Caribbean from North America.

Not only do literally dozens of ships sail to this part of the world across every cruise line imaginable, but cruises also go year-round. With an unlimited sailing season, there are natural variances in the prices due to demand.

As a general rule of thumb, when it comes to the Caribbean the prices are highest when school is out and lower when school is back in session .

This makes sense. Families are a major component of cruise demand. When kids are out of school, it means that more people are able to sail. It also coincides with the traditional summer travel season. As a result, prices are pushed higher. When kids head back to class, that demand from family cruisers is lessened, meaning lines often lower prices.

So when is the actual cheapest time to cruise?

We Studied 16 Months of Sailings to Track The Cheapest Time to Cruise

The issue with determining the least expensive time to sail is that many ships sail different routes through the year. A ship might sail from one port for a few months with several different itineraries and cruise lengths, before moving on. Departure ports, routes, and trip length all impact prices, making it hard to judge one cruise against another.

However, we were able to find a cruise that would answer the question. Carnival Cruise Line offers a three-day sailing regularly throughout the year from Miami. This trip aboard Carnival Conquest is as simple as it gets. It sails from Miami to Nassau and back, week after week.

Because the itinerary is offered with no changes for more than a year in advance, it makes a perfect candidate to study as we have regular pricing throughout the year to compare.

That’s exactly what we did, taking each cruise and the headline price per person for the lowest-cost interior cabin.

Now, what’s important to us isn’t the actual cost of the trip, only the cost in relation to other dates . With this cruise sailing regularly throughout the year, we are able to see exactly when it is least expensive and more expensive.

Take a look:

Fares Vary Widely, But You Can Save in Fall/Winter

As you can see, the cost of this specific cruise varies widely from a high of roughly $450 per person to a low near $200 per person. And because it’s the same cruise week after week, the only difference is when the trip sails.

It should jump out that the most expensive time to cruise is in the summer. Months like June and July see consistently high prices. That’s followed by times like Spring Break and the Christmas holidays.

Again, these are all times when school is out and more people are able to sail.

This chart also answers the least expensive time to cruise. Here, you can see that the fall and winter months see the best rates . Specifically September through early December have low fares. January and February also see low rates too as many people wrap up the winter break and return to school and work.

Now, this doesn’t mean you can find low rates other times of the year. In particular, we often see low rates in April and May that aren’t shown here.

The bottom line is that if you want to sail to the Caribbean for less, look in the fall and winter months, outside of Christmas and New Years. There may be other times that you can find a deal, but this is generally when you see the lowest fares.

Saving money feels good — almost as good as sitting on the top deck of a Caribbean-bound cruise with a cocktail in hand. But why not have both? Saving money on that Caribbean cruise (or any cruise for that matter) is easier than you think — you just need to know how the industry works, including the best time to book a cruise, when you can score an upgrade, and how to get the sailing you want without breaking the bank.

Pricing fluctuates based on itinerary, the ship's age, the type of cruise, and how soon the vessel is scheduled to sail. But the best time to book a cruise depends heavily on you: when you want to travel, what you want out of the experience, and how comfortable you are waiting until the last minute.

When to Book Early

If you have your sights set on a high-demand sailing — on a new ship or during school holiday dates — the best time to book a cruise will be as soon as fares are released. This is the only way to guarantee a spot (and secure a particular cabin location).

Cruise Critic explains that many popular sailings offer their best rates when fares first go on sale and then increase prices as the ship fills up. This rule is especially true for luxury itineraries, Disney cruises , and new ships.

When to Wait

If you're not interested in high-season travel or experiencing the latest cruise ship, you can play the waiting game and pounce as soon as fares drop. As any seasoned traveler knows, you'll often find lower rates or free add-ons as the departure date approaches and the cruise line works to fill the ship.

While holding off may result in a once-in-a-lifetime deal, keep in mind that your cabin and category choices may be minimal and there's no guarantee you'll be able to book at all. This approach works best for people with flexible work schedules or retirees who can adjust their dates to snag these less expensive fares.

Tracking Fares

The only way to really know the best time to book a cruise is to track fares, which is not an easy task. Luckily, rate tracking on the Shipmate app and Cruise Critic make it a bit more realistic. They'll let you know if there's a price drop, taking some of the extra work off your plate.

Best Time of Year to Book a Cruise

The best time of year to book a cruise is often January through March. During this period — also known as wave season — industry-wide sales occur and the price of that cruise you've been dreaming of may drop significantly. It's also a good time to find booking promotions, like free upgrades, prepaid gratuities, or onboard spending money.

Best Time of Month to Book a Cruise

While there isn't a "best time of the month" to book a cruise, monitoring fare changes over several weeks can help you spot any price drops. Cruise prices fluctuate frequently based on availability, demand, and special deals. Unless you're interested in a high-demand sailing, be patient and look out for flash sales.

Best Day of the Week to Book a Cruise

People often wonder if there is a specific day of the week when cruise prices consistently drop. Unfortunately, fares don't rise and fall on a set schedule, and it's impossible to predict when they'll change. One 2016 study by CruiseWatch.com found that, on average, cruise fares dropped the most on Thursdays. The data also found that Wednesdays were the worst for price hikes. These data points are constantly fluctuating so your best bet is to track fares throughout the week.

Understanding When and Why Cruise Prices Drop

Wave season may be a popular time to find cruise deals, but not every company releases its best deals and promotions during that period. Sales (or lack thereof) are often based on what is and isn't selling. If a cruise is filling up quickly, the company has no reason to release a sale to entice customers. But if a cruise's departure date is fast approaching and the ship is only partially booked, prices will drop and complimentary add-ons will increase, resulting in some happy customers.

You’ve finally landed on the cruise you want to take—maybe it’s a winter expedition to Norway to see the northern lights or perhaps you’re keen on sailing around the Galápagos to see the islands’ impossibly curious animals—but now the question is, when should you book? Is it better to secure reservations far in advance or do you stand a better chance of snagging a deal if you wait?

We polled travel advisors who specialize in cruises to better understand when the best time to book a cruise is. Here’s what they had to say.

When is the best time to book a cruise?

While there’s not necessarily a wrong time to book a cruise, there are time frames where travelers can benefit from discounts and promotions.

Beyond holiday periods such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday , and Labor Day when there may be some flash sales, January and February are particularly good times to book a cruise , as the first two months of the year are considered “wave season” in the cruising industry. It’s when companies are looking to base load their ships for the year.

“Wave season is when cruise lines announce incredible promotions in an effort to sell as much unsold space for the year as possible,” explains Jeremy Hall, a travel advisor at Cruise Vacations International.

Those promotions could include free stateroom upgrades, highly reduced cruise fares, discounts on deposits, free sailings for children, complimentary airfare, and discounted beverage packages, among other offers.

Windstar Cruises : Book a Windstar sailing by February 29 and you can choose an additional perk, which could include a free night in a hotel (pre- or post-cruise) or up to $1,000 in onboard credit. Those who book a premium suite can upgrade to the all-inclusive fare, which includes alcohol, Wi-Fi, and gratuities. Our suggestion? Sail the Mediterranean with Windstar this winter , when there are fewer crowds and no extreme heat.

How far in advance should you book a cruise? Is it better to book early?

Travelers who are less concerned about deals and more focused on a specific destination or making sure they get choice accommodations may want to take a different approach to booking a cruise. Cruise companies open up bookings for sailings as early as two years in advance. While that might sound like plenty of time to mull over sailings, William Kiburz, a travel advisor at Coronet Travel , says the earlier you book, the better, especially when it comes to expedition-style or specialized cruises, as well as sailings to Alaska , as those are itineraries that often sell out more than a year in advance.

Samantha Robichaud, a travel advisor and owner of Fabulous Adventures Travel Company , says that booking early also means travelers have more choices when it comes to travel dates, staterooms, specialty dining reservations at preferred times, and shore excursions.

Todd Smith, owner of AdventureSmith Explorations , says that if you want to go on an expedition cruise, which typically involves a smaller ship, it’s imperative to book early.

“ Booking last minute also means you get what remains available instead of the best trip, ship, cabin, and program for you,” Smith says.

Another reason to try to book early: The cabin price is usually lower. “Cruise fares tend to rise as the time before departure draws closer,” Hall says. “Even though you may see a new promotion announced for the cruise you booked six months ago, chances are you got a better deal because the cruise fare more than likely went up before that new promotion was announced.”

There are often perks for guests who book early. For example, Holland America Line offers an early booking bonus that allows guests to enjoy all the benefits of the standard “Have It All” package, including shore excursion and specialty dining credit, plus included gratuity, a low-price guarantee, and upgrades to premium Wi-Fi and an “elite” beverage package, which covers all premium spirits, beers, and wines.

Is it possible to score last-minute cruise deals?

If pricing is more important than preferred accommodations, travelers can opt to wait until closer to the departure date to see if they can take advantage of any last-minute offers . It’s a bit of a gamble—you risk the ship selling out. And, in the 11th hour, flights to the port might be more expensive.

To find deals, travelers can sign up for email newsletters from various cruise lines, as the companies often send out updates on flash sales. You can also search the cruise line websites—some, like Holland America , have pages on their website dedicated to last-minute deals.

Hall says that his company typically sees more last-minute deals with river cruises than ocean cruises. He also notes that last-minute deals usually involve added amenities or a waived single supplement.

Will working with a travel advisor get me a better deal?

“There are so many ways to get a good deal on a cruise, and nobody knows better than an experienced travel advisor ,” Hall says. “There are so many promotions, amenities, loyalty programs, and pricing structures these days—it makes finding the best deal a daunting task. Your travel advisor will know precisely how to narrow down the search field to find the right cruise and deal for you.”

Robichaud echoes that sentiment, saying that travel advisors can leverage relationships with cruise companies to get discounted rates or free add-ons. And Smith notes that agencies that book a lot of cruises often receive free upgrades for their clients as an incentive from cruise lines aiming to build up a loyal network of travel advisors who sell and book their cruises.

Are there better times for families or groups to book a cruise?

Only certain ships and expeditions offer accommodations large enough to fit three or four people, so groups and families looking to stay in the same cabin should book as soon as possible because options may be limited.

As Robichaud notes, rooms that can accommodate more people tend to fill up fast during holidays and school breaks; if travelers have a specific sailing in mind, it’s essential to book early.

Judy Perl, president of Judy Perl Travel, adds that for parents looking to travel around school schedules, it’s worth noting that spring break is often the cheapest for cruising, and summer break offers more destination options. The winter holiday season is always significantly more expensive, she says.

How to bid on a cabin upgrade

Just as some airlines offer the opportunity to bid for a business- or first-class seat upgrade , many cruise companies offer travelers the opportunity to bid on stateroom upgrades.

  • Some cruise lines will email confirmed customers before their voyage, offering them the chance to bid on a higher class of cabin at a steeply discounted price.
  • Travelers suggest a price they’re comfortable with spending.
  • If the cruise company accepts the offer, guests will be charged the amount of their bid and receive an updated booking with their new room details.

Robichaud says she just got back from a Virgin Voyages sailing where she was supposed to have a Sea Terrace stateroom but won her bid for a Mega RockStar suite (complete with daily spa access, a bottomless in-room bar, a personal butler, and access to a members-only sundeck). Similarly, some companies have dedicated landing pages on their websites where guests can bid. When bidding for an upgrade online, be aware that you can’t cancel your bid once accepted (but you can cancel or change the offer before acceptance).

Upgrades are also available after you’ve boarded the ship. Perl recommends that people keen on a larger room go to the purser’s office and inquire if there have been any cancellations or no-shows. “Once the ship leaves the dock, typically, it is no longer under revenue management control back at headquarters,” Perl explains. “The ship can make their own pricing decisions about what to charge to maximize the yield on their available inventory.”

What’s worth it and what isn’t in terms of cruise add-ons?

Amenity add-ons, like beverage packages, onboard credit, Wi-Fi, laundry service, and included gratuities, only have a value if you are going to use them. A person who drinks only one glass of wine each day or someone who likes to disconnect from tech on vacation may find little worth in an unlimited drinks package or premium Wi-Fi, respectively. It’s important to know the value of these items for you and purchase accordingly.

Best Time to Book a Cruise, According to 11 Travel Experts

Is there a best time to book a cruise?

We asked travel experts for some valuable tips.

Table of Contents

January is an ideal time to book a cruise primarily because not many other people are booking cruises then

The best time to book is the moment you know what you want to experience, the best time to book a cruise will always be last minute, when you book, when you travel, what you book, pre and post-cruise airfare, onboard offers, become a local, bring it on, winter months, as a general rule of thumb—the farther you are traveling, the further out you will want to consider booking, another great time to book cruises is during “wave season”, in my opinion, the best time to book a cruise is based on the season, early morning on weekends is a great time, the best time to book a cruise often comes down to preference, planning, and peace of mind, what matters is not when you book your cruise, but when you set sail, if you’re cruising with children, it’s essential that you book a cruise as early as possible, frequently asked questions.

Cruises are great vacations to book and take year-round but some times of the year are better times than others to book a cruise. If you are looking to book a cruise when there are the lowest fares and the most availability the best time to book is in January.

Since it is after the holiday season, most people have either finished a holiday vacation and have no intention of booking another one soon.

Regardless of the reasons, cruise lines realize not many people are booking cruises during these times so you can often find the best deals of the year. Cruise lines typically provide good sales in January to encourage potential cruisers to fill their ships.

Another advantage of booking in January is you will often find the most availability for the cabins of your choice.

Early January is a particularly good time to book a fall cruise because many others have not booked these cruises. Many people are not yet thinking about fall vacations in January, and you can use this time to snag some of the best cabins on the ship, often at lower fares.

I recommend others plan so they can book their cruises in January. You will be ahead of the game to likely find more availability of cabins on the ship and great deals that will get your vacation off to the best start possible.

Cruise lines tend to be very flexible in their approach to early depositing. In my business, I often plainly tell clients to book when they think they want an itinerary, as soon as possible, the earlier in advance, the better. As long as there are clear terms regarding any penalty period, time is on their side. More on that below.

Avoid being the last in line

It’s also because, if they want the itinerary, there are 7 billion other people on the planet who might want it too – some of them might want it so bad they’d put down a deposit before you and then you’re the last in line.

Typically, there is a very fair penalty period and a tiered system of deposits allowing would-be cruisers to pay an amount proportionate to the duration or category of their sailing. For example, a 3-night Bahamas vs the 7-night Mediterranean; or an interior cabin vs a suite.

So, if they book far enough in advance, they will have the best opportunity to choose a cabin which suits them rather than a cabin which is the pick of the left-overs. There’s the first benefit.

Early booking bonus

It is a real thing, not on every sailing but it does exist. Second benefit.

Cruisers will have a longer lead-in time before their final payment is due and the start of applicable penalty periods

For many cruise lines that means the flexibility to jump to a better promotion later if one comes available. Savings, sure, but also bonus amenities or whatever else might be valid and on offer with the promotion.

Staying flexible and booking it during a week where there are no official holidays in sight and there is lots of capacity, like the Caribbean.

Of course, that’s difficult for most people that must plan their vacation in advance. Several times during the year the various cruise lines will have special promotions that can reduce the cost of booking by over half. The cost of a booking isn’t just the cost of the stateroom.

Very often you end up spending more money onboard, so it’s important to make sure you get additional things for free, like a la carte dining, Wi-Fi, unlimited alcoholic beverages and credit for shore excursions. That’s when these sales come in handy.

For cruise itineraries with high demand, the best fares will be when they first go on sale. This is especially true with luxury cruises and Disney cruises. Keeping track of all of this can be tedious. And signing up with the various cruise line emails can very quickly overwhelm your inbox.

So, I always suggest to my guests to let me know well in advance what cruise they are interested in. And when the sale comes up we can let them know and get them booked relatively quickly.

For cruises, booking with a travel agent will still get you some of the best deals. That’s because 82% of luxury cruise sales in the USA are still handled by travel agents and our tremendous amount of booking volume will generally get you better rates than if you attempted to book on your own.

There are two key times to book your Cruise vacation to save the most money.

Disney Cruise

If it’s a Disney Cruise you have to book as far out as possible. This would be around one year out from your sail date. As time goes by the cruise prices go up for Disney Cruise Line because of the limited availability. It’s very difficult to get a last-minute Disney Cruise Line deal.

Other cruise lines

For other cruise lines, you can apply the same strategy or also search one month before your vacation and pick up great last-minute deals. 2019 is a great year to take a cruise vacation. There is a great deal of stateroom availability in the cruise industry overall. So there are great deals out there for cruise vacations.

If you are booking Christmas week, summer, spring break or any times when kids are out of school, expect to pay top dollar for your cruise.

For the best savings, you need to stay away from when everyone else vacations

Hurricane Season sounds horrible but we have traveled many many years during September and October out of Florida ports and have had perfect vacations. So plan your cruise vacation during these low seasons.

Looking for a really cheap 3-day or 4-day extended weekend trip? Try Carnival Cruise Line, MSC or Costa for really amazing rates. You can even find great deals on Royal Caribbean too. These 3-4 day cruises are also a nice way to try a cruise for a first-time cruiser or to try a new cruise line.

Look into the bundled price for airfare and transfers to and from the port. Then price these yourself or ask a travel agent to put together the options for you. Sometimes you can rent a limo to and from the port for less than transfers from the cruise line. Also, you can get some great deals on pre and post-cruise hotel nights close to the port and eliminate the worry of missing the ship.

While on your cruise, stop by the future cruise booking desk. All cruise lines have these and they will offer you extra incentives to book your next cruise now. You don’t have to know the exact dates or pay in full and they will add your travel agents name to the reservation so they get credit and can help you with the cruise when you get back home.

We get Florida resident last-minute cruise deals all the time at Pixie Vacations and they are so good we often contemplate moving to Florida.

If you are retired and love to cruise, you could get to a Florida port from most places in Florida with a quick drive. Image waking up and just hopping on a Caribbean Cruise from your back door.

Check with your cruise line or travel agent to find out what you can bring on. Some cruise lines let you bring beer and wine onto the ship and this can save you some money those sea days when you want to grab a drink.

The winter months are the best time to book a cruise since cruise companies like to offer reduced prices, along with great incentives like free upgrades, in order to get travelers booking during their quietest time of the year. It’s always best to use a cruise comparison website to find and snap up awesome cruise packages at bargain prices.

Julie Karp

Cruises from the U.S. to the Far East or Australia are best booked 12-18 months in advance. Similarly, a Cruise to Alaska is best booked a year in advance.

Wave Season is the sales period that historically takes place between January and March since a large percentage of cruisers book their trips in the early months of the year. The new year, an empty calendar plus the cold winter months get travelers thinking about vacations and because of this cruise lines and travel agents often offer extra incentives.

Chaz Hitz

Like birds and whales, cruise ships also migrate to specific locations based on the seasonal weather patterns. This is why Alaskan cruises are in the summer and not at Christmas time.

Whereas Australian and South American cruises are the best during the winter holidays where the sun is good and warm. With this in mind, I have my clients book at least 8 months or more out from their select departure date.

Ever had to get up early to go on holiday, yes? Then you’ll have to repeat that feat to get the best deal on cruises, with 5 am being the ideal time to get the best deal. No late night comparison shopping or checking cruises in your lunch. Get up, get on (the internet) and book that cheap cruise.

Need further encouragement (discouragement) the best day to book is on a Sunday, usually a lie in the day for most people, well not you, well not if you want to secure a cheap cruise that is.

For further saving tips, ensure to book at least 2 months in advance if you can and if you are rechecking cruises, use an anonymous browser, else sites will raise prices as will recognize your IP address and will know you are too keen.

When to book a cruise is a battle between cost savings and preference. If you book early and the sailing goes on sale, you miss out on the savings, conversely, if you wait to book, the airfare may increase and offset potential savings.

Cruise lines throw in enticements (free gratuities, free drinks, free shore tours, onboard credit, etc.) and discounted deposits throughout the year with their best specials during Wave Season (Jan-March).

If you want a particular cabin on the ship, sail on a popular theme cruise or are using airline miles for the flights, then you may need to book early to ensure your needs are met. For destinations like Alaska, pre/post hotels are tight in Seattle so booking early is encouraged.

When it comes to the best time to book a cruise, many people think that they can save a lot of money by booking their trip at the right time. For example, if you book early in the year you might save money compared to booking in the height of summer. Truth is, that’s just not the case.

Think about if there was a certain time when booking your cruise meant cheaper fares. If that was the case, many people would put off their bookings until that time of year. The result would wreak havoc on the cruise lines, who want you to book sooner rather than later. As a result, fares are similar no matter what time of year you book. Where there is a difference is in when you sail.

As a rule of thumb, it’s much cheaper to sail when school is in session.

When school is in, families can’t set sail easily, which lowers demand. As a result, cruises during the school year can be hundreds less per person.

Cruise ships have a limited number of places for children of each age group, and family cruising is quickly becoming more and more popular. I’ve seen so many people miss out on being able to book a cruise because they’ve left it too late and there are no spaces left for children – although there may be plenty of adult places left.

What’s more, you can get some great deals by booking early. I’ve booked cruises almost two years in advance and paid just £1 for each of my children – which has cut the overall price of our cruise in half!

What is a cruise?

A cruise is a type of vacation that takes place on a ship where passengers travel to various destinations and enjoy multiple activities and amenities on board. Cruises vary in length, itinerary, and style and are popular with travelers of all ages and interests. Whether you want to explore new places, relax and unwind, or participate in fun activities with family and friends, a cruise is a unique and exciting way to experience the world.

What types of cruises are available?

There are many different types of cruises, depending on your preferences and budget. Some popular types of cruises are:

Ocean cruises take place on large ships that sail across oceans and seas, visiting multiple ports of call along the way.

River cruises  take place on smaller ships that travel on rivers, offering a more intimate and immersive experience.

Expedition cruises focus on exploring remote and exotic destinations such as the Arctic, Antarctica, or the Galapagos Islands.

Luxury cruises offer the highest level of comfort and service with upscale amenities and exclusive experiences.

Theme cruises focus on specific interests, such as music, food, wine, or sports, and offer special events and activities related to the theme.

What are some popular cruise destinations?

Cruises can take you to a variety of destinations around the world. Here are some popular cruise destinations:

Caribbean:  The Caribbean is one of the most popular cruise destinations known for its white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and tropical climate. You can visit various islands, such as Jamaica, the Bahamas, and St. Maarten.

Alaska: Alaska offers a unique and breathtaking experience with its rugged wilderness, glaciers, and wildlife. You can take a cruise along the Inside Passage and visit ports such as Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway.

Mediterranean:  The Mediterranean is known for its rich history, culture, and cuisine. Popular ports of call include Barcelona, Rome, and Athens.

Hawaii: A cruise to Hawaii offers the opportunity to experience the islands’ natural beauty with their volcanic landscapes, lush rainforests, and stunning beaches. You can visit ports like Honolulu, Maui, and Kauai.

Europe: A European cruise can take you to various countries and cities, such as Paris, Amsterdam, and Venice, allowing you to experience different cultures and cuisines.

What can I expect aboard a cruise ship?

Cruise ships offer a variety of amenities and activities to keep passengers comfortable and entertained during their voyage.

Common onboard features include:

• Restaurants and bars serve a variety of cuisines and beverages. • Entertainment venues, such as theaters, casinos, and nightclubs. • Sports and fitness facilities such as gyms, pools, and basketball courts. • Spa and wellness centers that offer massages, facials, and other treatments. • Children’s programs and activities for kids of all ages. • Shopping boutiques that sell souvenirs, clothing, and other items.

A cruise is a fun and convenient way to discover new destinations and spend a relaxing vacation with family and friends. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned veteran, there’s always something new to discover on the high seas.

What should I pack for a cruise?

When packing for a cruise, it’s important to consider the type of cruise, the destinations you’ll be visiting, and the activities you’ll be participating in. Some general packing tips are:

• Take comfortable, casual clothes for daytime activities and dressier attire for evening events. • Pack multiple layers to adapt to weather and temperature changes. • Remember to pack swimwear, sunscreen, and other essentials for outdoor activities. • Think about the excursions you’ll participate in and pack the appropriate gear, such as hiking boots or snorkeling equipment. • Check with the cruise line for special dress codes or certain activities or venue requirements.

The Best and Cheapest Times to Cruise

The best time to cruise and the cheapest time to cruise are not always the same. The best time to be on the water is often when the weather is nicest or when you have time off. These sailings are often the most popular, but “best” can quickly turn to “worst” when you face high prices and large crowds. The cheapest time to cruise is often when most travelers don’t want to go. You may find less ideal weather or some seasonal closures, but the lure of cheap fares and uncrowded ports might make you change your mind about what you consider the best time to cruise.

As you plan your next cruise, you’ll want to take into consideration the best and cheapest times to cruise and see what jibes with your vacation schedule. Here’s a when-to-cruise guide for some popular destinations.

alaska cruise ship deck.

Alaska has a very short cruising season; ships traverse its chilly waters only between late April and September. The months of June through August offer the warmest weather and are therefore the best time to cruise Alaska (and the most popular). In other months, you’ll find some closures and a bit more chill in the air, but you’ll also find the best prices. In addition, April and May are the driest months of the Alaska cruise season, so you’re less likely to be rained out of your flightseeing tour or glacier walk.

bermuda beach and bay.

Bermuda cruises sail from April through mid-November, mostly during Bermuda’s high or “beach” season. Most people travel during the summer months, making those voyages pricier, but you’ll find deals on spring and fall departures (April through early June and September through November). Bermuda has temperate weather year-round, though it does see the occasional autumn hurricane. If it’s too chilly for the beach in the shoulder season, you can always try out the island’s many golf courses and spas.

cruise ship anchored in the caribbean.

You can sail to the region year-round, but the best time to cruise the Caribbean is when it’s coldest in the Northern Hemisphere. Not only is the warm Caribbean climate a welcome respite from bad weather, but December through April is also the driest part of the year in the islands. The cheapest times to cruise are typically in the late summer and fall because of hurricane season . (If you decide to travel then, purchasing cruise insurance is a good idea.) But you can often find other patches of bargain sailings, especially during the early weeks of December and in the spring. The timing of spring discounts isn’t always consistent, so it’s best to keep an eye out and book when you see a low rate.

cruise ship in mediterranean.

Europe is so big that you can’t lump all its cruises together. The Mediterranean cruise season runs year-round on select cruise lines, though you’ll have the most options between April and November. Northern Europe and Baltic cruises have a shorter season running from May to early November, while the warmer Greek Islands and Canary Islands see cruise ships between March and December. Small-ship river cruises usually run from spring through fall, with a few sailings in December to see the local Christmas markets.

Most tourists come to Europe in the summer, but the late spring and early fall have more pleasant temperatures and not as many crowds. You’ll find the lowest cruise prices at the beginning and end of each season; prices rise dramatically for the summer months.

waimea canyon waterfall

With two Norwegian Cruise Line ships dedicated to Hawaii cruising, you can explore the islands year-round. The best time to cruise Hawaii for good weather is during the summer and early fall when the islands get the least amount of rain. Summer tends to be the most popular because of school vacation and honeymoon season. Hawaii cruises are often cheapest from November through February, with the exception of holiday cruises.

los cabos arch.

You can cruise to Mexico year-round, either as part of a western Caribbean itinerary or as a dedicated Mexican Riviera voyage. The best time to visit Mexico is during its dry season, November through May. However, it’s a popular destination even during the rainier summer months. You’ll find the best deals in the fall, during hurricane season.

New England and Canada

acadia national park autumn.

New England and Canada sailings depart from May through October. You’ve got a better chance for warm weather if you travel from late June through early September. However, if you’re interested in foliage viewing, you’ll need to go in early to mid-October. May and late October sailings will offer the lowest rates, but don’t expect to be using the onboard swimming pool much.

Cruising the World One Port at a Time

How and When to Book Your Cruise to Get the Best Rates

By: Sherry Laskin · Updated On: February 22, 2018

Yes...that's snow on a Canada New England cruise. Not a lot but enough that the crew had enough to make little snowmen! Many had never seen snow.

As soon as I started to sell cruises back in 1992, l tried to identify cruise-booking trends. At that time, the playing field was completely different from what it is today. You’ve probably heard stories when people showed up at the port with their suitcase hoping for a last minute deal if someone canceled or a stateroom was unsold. Then 2001 happened and the industry and booking tactics changed.

Now, the cruise lines want you to book your cruise early. Why? So they can use your deposit money of course. But also important, it gives them an opportunity to monitor their own booking trends far enough out so that promotions and sales can be well planned to fill vacancies.

One of the most common questions I’m asked is, “When is the best time to book your cruise for the best rate?”

Here are some reasons why people don’t want to book early.

  • They don’t want to tie up their funds 18 months before their cruise.
  • They are sure the rates will drop closer to sailing time and then they’ll get the best deal.
  • They’re not sure what their plans will be so far in advance.
  • If they wait til the last minute, there will be plenty of staterooms from which to choose. Because who takes a Caribbean cruise in September?
  • They don’t care where on the ship their stateroom will be located because they’re buying the cheapest possible accommodation.

What they don’t know is that…

  • The best deals are rarely at the last minute. Instead, book your cruise at the time of the deployment announcement; that is, when the new schedules and itineraries are made public, usually 18 months ahead.
  • Early booking means stateroom selection is wide open. Don’t get stuck with an adjoining room next to the Loud Family or under the Disco or the pool deck.
  • If the rate drops before final payment is due, ask for a price adjustment. If the rate drops after final payment…well, that’s another issue altogether, especially on the mass market cruise lines. I’ll address that further on.
  • Buy travel insurance. If vacation plans change and third-party travel insurance with a Cancel for Any Reason waiver was purchased, almost all of the monies are returned if canceling for a non-covered reason.
  • No matter what season, cruise ships usually sail full. For a certain itinerary, stateroom location or groups of family/friends, the sooner you book and deposit your accommodation, the better your selection.
  • Supply and demand rules. Full ships usually mean higher prices for leftovers.

Plan your cruise: Find and compare lowest rates .

Book your cruise late and you won’t get early dining in the main dining room..

Dining times are also affected. Book late and you’ll end up either dining at 8:30pm or most likely, all that will be available is an Anytime Dining program. Early/main seating in the Main Dining Room fills up quickly for yet another reason to book early.

When to expect rates to change in your favor? Promotions added?

Here’s a little trick of the trade. Large travel agencies block out huge quantities of staterooms as soon as the new deployment is public. While the rates may be equal to what everyone else can access, by grabbing dozens or even hundreds of staterooms, these agencies may be able to give their clients onboard credits, wine, hors d’oeuvre trays, shore excursion money and more. Enticing.

At some point, any unsold group space has to be returned to the cruise line or the agency will get stuck paying for any unsold space. This usually happens at intervals; 90, 60 and depending upon the contract with the cruise line, even 30 days before the cruise.

Suddenly, the cruise lines are faced with hundreds of empty cabins pretty close to the sailing date. Here’s when you might be able to pick up a good deal. But you must know what your cruise line’s cancelation penalty policy is so you don’t get your nose out of joint if they won’t let you reduce the rate on your cabin.

New promotions can pop up at almost any time…especially around the holiday season plus Memorial Day, Labor Day and the Fourth of July. Keep scanning the horizon.

Are you listening? Know the penalties, then decide.

Say the rate significantly drops while you are under the least amount of penalty; ex. the loss of your deposit. It can be cheaper to cancel, lose your deposit, and rebook the same cruise at a lower, discounted rate. You’ll either save money or break even and maybe be able to upgrade your stateroom. I know this works. I’ve done it for myself several times. It was cheaper to cancel, pay a small penalty and rebook myself into a higher category stateroom and still come out ahead.

A little knowledge can go a long way. No one likes to feel they’ve paid too much. And frequent cruisers know that people love to blab about what they paid for their cruise. Put any 10 people together on a cruise and you’ll probably get 10 different prices.

Bottom line.

  • Book your cruise early. Then re-book later on if necessary, following the cruise line’s booking and penalty policies. Know before you buy.
  • Use a cruise-oriented travel agent. Someone who’s actually been on many cruises and is focused on selling cruises.
  • Book early to choose your favorite dining time, the best stateroom based on your budget and the stateroom location on the ship.
  • Monitor the rates and contact your agent if the prices drop. Chances are when your agent is on the phone with the cruise line, not only will you get the lower rate, your agent might be able to combine new promotions that you would not otherwise receive.

Another little know reason to book a cruise early? If you like the best of the best, remember that the highest category suites are the first to sell out.

That’s a great question. But as long as you avoid booking a stateroom with a connecting door to another, you minimize the risk of listening to noisy neighbors. Walls are thin anyway and the adjoining door is even worse.

Did you know that the window immediately following the New Year’s celebration often harbors the  cheapest weeks to cruise ? Yes, this period hosts a treasure trove of  affordable cruise dates  that many aren’t aware of. I’ll share insights into the  cheapest time to take a cruise ,  budget-friendly cruise seasons , and  off-season cruise deals  that will have you booking your next maritime adventure without a second thought about cost.

Cheapest Month to Book a Cruise?

Cheapest Month to Book a Cruise?

Key Takeaways

  • Pinpoint the  cheapest weeks to cruise  by targeting the start of the year , especially when the holidays wrap up.
  • Learn about  affordable cruise dates  that coincide with the kids’ school schedules to maximize savings.
  • Understand why the  cheapest time to cruise  taps into off-peak industry rhythms for unbeatable rates.
  • Discover why  budget-friendly cruise seasons  offer not just price cuts but enhanced cabin availability, too.
  • Unravel the secrets of snagging  economical sail times  with repositioning cruises during spring and fall.
  • Get ahead with  reduced-rate cruise windows , ensuring you know the best times to book for less traveled destinations .
  • Find out when to set sail with  off-season cruise deals  that promise considerable savings for the savvy traveler.

Optimal Periods for Inexpensive Cruising

Carnival Jubilee

When asked when the cheapest time to cruise is, my answer invariably falls within the first quarter of the year. Cruisers in the know often refer to this time as the “ wave season ,” a span between January and March rich in cost-saving opportunities. The cruise industry , aware of the lull following the festive season, unveils a treasure trove of promotions and discounts to fill their fleets for the year’s voyages. These incentives can include anything from free stateroom upgrades to complimentary airfare , luring savvy travelers into setting sail at slashed rates.

The most  economical sail times pleasantly coincide with when children are tucked away in classrooms and the chaos of holiday travel has subsided. At this time, the  cruise low season  welcomes fewer tourists, translates to lower prices, and opens up a greater variety of available cabins. For those who thirst for tropical destinations, finding  cheap cruises in the Caribbean  becomes particularly feasible during this period. Meanwhile, colder destinations like Alaska present a different seasonal pricing model, which is best taken advantage of outside the summer peak.

  • Cruise Low Season : January to mid-February
  • Optimal Cruise Pricing Periods : Wave season deals (January-March)
  • Best Time to Find Cruise Deals : Just after the New Year
  • Off-Season Cruise Deals : Discounts prevalent when vacationing families are less likely to travel
  • Cheapest Months to Cruise : Historically, in late January and February

Best Time of Year to Book a Cruise

When is the Best Time to Go on a Cruise?

My advice for cruisers is straightforward: early reservation is a strategic maneuver. This ensures access to various  budget-friendly cruise seasons  and  discounted cruise schedules , which is particularly advantageous for specialty or expedition voyages where demand may soar swiftly. As expected, price points generally ascend as the departure date draws near, solidifying that the  cheapest time to cruise  is at the genesis of wave season or at the inaugural moment when bookings are first available.

  • Secure early deals during  January and February , the peak of wave season.
  • Look for luxury and specialized cruises, such as Disney and expedition cruises , when they first open for booking.
  • Be vigilant of the cheapest cruise line  promotions to maximize savings.

Best Time to Book Caribbean Cruises

Cheapest Month to Book a Cruise: When is the Best Time to Go on a Cruise? | 27

For  cheap cruises in the Caribbean , the consensus among seasoned travelers is to aim for the  best time to cruise to the Caribbean, which typically falls during the wave season.

Booking during the early months of the year, especially from January through March, can secure you a  cheap cruise in the Caribbean . This period is often punctuated by a lull in demand post-holiday season, making it the  best time to go on a cruise to the Caribbean if you’re on a budget. I’m also a big fan of cruising in October, November or Decemeber when the sailing dates are not during a holiday. Holidays sailings are often come with peak prices. Remember, if kids are out of school, the rates will be much higher.

Booking your cruise during wave season offers numerous promotions that can lead to substantial savings.

I’ve prepared a comparative table to guide you on when might be the best time for Caribbean cruise bookings based on factors such as average prices, demand, and weather conditions. This may also help you snag those elusive  cheap Caribbean cruises  we all covet:

Watching for last-minute offers can lead to significant savings for those with flexible schedules. However, I want you to know that this strategy comes with risks, including limited cabin availability and the potentially rapid selling out of desired itineraries.

When to Book Early

Sailing Year-Round From New York City

If your dream vacation includes a particular stateroom or a spot on the newest mega-ship, Waiting won’t do; the prime picks, whether cabins or dates, tend to sell out with surprising speed.

  • The early bird catches the worm: Recent high demand makes this advice, even more relevant today.
  • Anticipated releases: Booking when new itineraries are released can lock in incredible deals.
  • Marquee cabins: Early booking is non-negotiable for prime locations such as aft balconies or unique suites .
  • Peak travel periods: Holidays and school vacations call for strategic, early reservations.
  • Exclusive experiences: Small ship and expedition cruises with limited capacity similarly demand foresight. This also goes for any unique itineraries.

Cheapest Time to Cruise Alaska

Westerdam

I’ve discovered that the  best month to cruise  this breathtaking region aligns with the fringes of the tourist season called the ‘shoulder season’ in May and September. These months mark the most economical sail times to Alaska, with the onset and conclusion of the cruise calendar offering the  cheapest time to take a cruise  to the Last Frontier. While summer in Alaska can be spectacular, prices during June, July, and August surge due to high demand.

I’ve also found that  Alaska cruise deals  often include what’s known as repositioning cruises. These are one-way itineraries where ships relocate from one region to another. Repositioning cruises at the start and end of the Alaskan season isn’t just an opportunity to save but also offers a unique perspective of transitioning landscapes. By targeting these specific time slots, I can relish the uncrowded serenity of Alaska’s majesty while benefiting from some of the cheapest time of year for cruises to this destination.

Tracking Cruise Fares

Cheapest Month to Book a Cruise: When is the Best Time to Go on a Cruise? | 27

I recommend  tracking cruise fares  to snag the  best price . Patience and persistence are essential, as fares fluctuate based on various factors, including the chosen itinerary, the age of the ship, and even the time of year. Insights gathered from  cruise fare tracking  can guide you on the best time to purchase a cruise , potentially saving you a substantial amount.

Through diligent monitoring, I’ve observed that Thursdays occasionally present notable fare drops. However, there’s no guaranteed timeframe for when deals appear, so flexibility is a boon if you’re employing this tactic to  get the best deal on a cruise . While there are no guarantees with fare tracking — with some risks, like limited cabin availability — it is often worth the effort for those with adaptable travel plans.

When Is the Best Time to Book a Cruise?

Last updated: June 16th, 2021

  • Find a Cruise

You’ve decided on a cruise vacation destination—maybe to the sun-warmed Caribbean islands to unwind on powdery white-sand beaches and sip frosty piña coladas, or to Alaska to watch pods of whales at play and see ice-blue glaciers shed their snowy sides with a great showy roar.

You know the time of year you’d like to travel, and you’ve even researched what to pack and what shore excursions to reserve, but what you’re not sure about is when to actually book your cruise.

Discover the best time to book the cruise itinerary you’re considering to ensure your cruise vacation is perfect from the start.

How far in advance should you book a cruise?

Popular cruise itineraries and sailings during peak vacation times can sell out quickly,  so you may want to book as soon as the cruise date is announced. Also, when promotional pricing and specials pop up, they tend to sell out quickly, so you’ll want to book as soon as you see these announced.

Family opening and exchanging gifts inside a stateroom

Book your cruise itinerary as early as possible if you want to spend the holidays on a cruise, desire specific stateroom accommodations, especially suites, have a special occasion to celebrate and want specialty dining reservations, or prefer prime spa services such as couples massages.

Many cruises are open for booking starting two years or more before the sailing date.

Is it better to book a cruise early or late?

Woman walking on beautiful beach

You often hear that the best time to book a cruise is either really early or really late in the booking window – that is, from the time a cruise itinerary is released to about six weeks before the cruise departs. Each has benefits and drawbacks, so you’ll need to assess which is the right choice for you.

What are the benefits of booking a cruise early?

Family enjoying a luxury cruise suite

Booking your cruise early has two main benefits: price and first pick of accommodations, shore excursions, and dining times.

Generally, you’ll find that the opening advertised price will be the best price for that cruise. As the ship’s staterooms start to fill, the cruise price tends to go up, and it may not go down if that sailing stays in high demand.

With Celebrity’s Best Price Guarantee, you can be assured that if a lower cruise fare is found, or if a promotional cruise fare is advertised after you book, and your booking falls within certain parameters, the lower fare will be applied to your booking.

Booking early also means you have more first-pick selections of some important onboard features, including:

Best Accommodation Choices

Elegant interior of Veranda Stateroom on Celebrity Edge

Booking early allows for the widest choice of staterooms. Unlike a hotel reservation, when you book a cruise, you don’t just book a stateroom category. You can (and should) choose your exact stateroom at the time of booking. First, choose the best stateroom , then look at the deck plans for your ship to pick out the perfect location.

Modern interior of Penthouse Suite on Celebrity Edge

Suites on every cruise can sell out quickly, as do the most desired locations, such as mid-ship staterooms (which are closer to the main dining rooms, many of the lounges, and have less noticeable movement); top decks (where you’ll get a bird’s-eye view from your veranda and closer proximity to the pool and sundeck); and one side of the ship versus the other (on certain sailings, this may be important for the view).

Preferred Times for Main Dining Room

Booking early also affords you the opportunity to reserve your preferred dining time in the ship’s Main Dining Room by choosing the Celebrity Select Dining option. This gives you the flexibility of dining early or later each day, rather than at a set time.

Early seatings are often booked first, so if you prefer dining at a set time each evening, booking early gives you the best chance of reserving your preferred time with the added benefit of a more personalized dining experience by having the same table and wait staff each evening.

Reserve Popular Shore Excursions and Onboard Activities

When you book your cruise early, you’ll have immediate access to the extensive array of shore excursions offered on Celebrity Cruises, many of which sell out quickly.

Family on a shore excursion in Alaska

For example, when sailing on one of our Hubbard Glacier cruises , there are a very limited number of spots for a spectacular small-vessel excursion that takes you close to Alaska’s amazing native wildlife, spectacular waterfalls, and the magnificent glacier located along the ship’s fjord route.

People eating dinner at Tuscan Grille on Celebrity Cruises

Early booking also lets you reserve specialty restaurant dates and times, and you can set up spa and fitness center appointments before the most desired times and locations are snapped up.

Early Booking Cancellation Policy

If it feels a bit daunting to book a cruise that’s still a year or more in the future, rest assured that most Celebrity Cruises itineraries have cancellation policies that allow you to cancel your booking up to 90 days before sailing, and as long as you cancel within the stated window, you won’t be charged the fare for the cruise.

What are the benefits of booking a cruise last minute?

For those who think that later is better, waiting until the last minute to book your cruise has some advantages, especially if you’re flexible about stateroom location, dining times, and shore excursions.

Couple hanging out by the pool while being served with drinks

If your main vacation goal is to escape the demands of everyday life for a bit and relish the luxurious amenities offered onboard a Celebrity Cruises’ ship, then last minute may be the best time for you to book your cruise vacation.

Do cruises get less expensive closer to the departure date?

Booking a last-minute cruise refers to the later part of the booking window, about three to eight weeks before the cruise is set to depart, with six to eight weeks out being the golden opportunity timeframe.

Six to eight weeks before the cruise departs is the most advantageous time to book last minute because it’s within the window for those who booked early to cancel their reservation without penalty. You may be able to score a mid-ship veranda stateroom or a top-deck stateroom because someone else has just opted out. The cruise fare may drop during this time in order to fill those staterooms before the sail date.

Tips to help you find the best last-minute cruise

  • Have a few different itinerary options in mind before you check for last-minute price drops. You might find the most exciting cruise opportunity by chance.
  • Check out the deck plan to be sure you understand the location of your stateroom. Also know that you’re rarely going to see much of a price drop for suites.
  • If you’re within driving distance of a cruise port, be open to the ships and itineraries that sail from that port.

What month is the best time to book a cruise?

Though there are peak times to book a cruise, the decision to book at a certain or “best” time comes down to your specific needs, wants, and itinerary.

Ruins of the Parthenon Temple in Athens, Greece

September and October are the best months to book a cruise for the coming year’s summer itineraries, especially for Mediterranean cruises and some popular holiday cruises.

Read: Best Time to Cruise the Mediterranean

Different offers are available throughout the year. Even if it falls outside the best time to book, you might see a special offer that you should take advantage of if it will save you money.

Guests relaxing on Celebrity Cruises Persian Garden

For example, if you know you want to spend time at the spa during your cruise, a special promotion that lets you save on an upgrade to AquaClass is a great option for you. If you are a foodie and you want to try all the specialty restaurants onboard, and you see a promotion that has a substantial onboard credit offer, take advantage of those savings and book your cruise.

Book a Cruise While You Cruise

Another one of the best times to book a cruise is when you’re actually on a cruise. We have booking specialists onboard our ships who are happy to meet with you to help you plan your next cruise.

Our specialists can help you find exactly what you want to make your next sailing even more special, whether it’s an early seating time, a similar stateroom location close to the pool, or a new destination you haven’t been to yet.

Friends raising glasses for a toast

Another benefit of booking your next cruise while you’re onboard is that there are often great incentives offered for booking while cruising. Bonuses differ depending on itinerary and timing of your cruise booking, but you’ll often see special offers that include dollars off or onboard credit you can use toward spa treatments, drinks, shore excursions, and other activities. You might even be offered a stateroom upgrade or free drink package.

These special limited-time offers (you have to book before the last day of your cruise) are worth seeking out. You’ll likely see them advertised during your cruise, but if not, make sure you head to the reservations lounge and ask what sort of onboard booking offers are available during your cruise.

Blue-footed boobies on a rock at Galapagos beach

If you’re not sure where you want to cruise next, check your daily Celebrity Today schedule of onboard events to see if there are any destination-focused information sessions.

These informative sessions are conducted by a travel expert who can tell you all you need to know about cruising to the featured destination, whether it’s the magnificent beauty and incredible wildlife of the Galapagos, the cobblestone villages and vibrant cities of the Mediterranean, or the exotic and magical cities of Southeast Asia.

When is the best time to book a cruise to Alaska?

Fireweed landscape in Alaska with Mendenhall Glacier and mountains as backdrop

If you’re planning an Alaska cruise , whether you want to sail in shoulder season when you’ll find fewer crowds and drier weather, or in peak season (June through August), you’ll want to book as early as possible.

In shoulder season, the initial posted fares may be the best fares offered, and Celebrity’s Best Price Guarantee ensures you’ll benefit from a price change.

If you’re cruising to Alaska during peak season, June through August , you’ll want to book early for suites and your pick of staterooms. Another reason to book early is to reserve shore excursions like glacier helicopter tours that sell out quickly.

When is the best time to book a cruise to the Caribbean?

Clear blue water and white sand at Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman

The best time to book a Caribbean cruise depends on when you want to sail. Peak season for the Caribbean is December through April, and that takes in the popular winter and spring holidays. These Caribbean cruises fill up fast, so you’ll want to book early to reserve your choice of stateroom or suite, preferred dining times, spa appointments, and specialty dining reservations.

Read: Best Time to Cruise to the Caribbean

If you are thinking about a Caribbean cruise during late summer or early fall (shoulder season), booking last minute may help you score a great promotional fare, especially if you have no work or school restrictions, are flexible about stateroom selection, and don’t mind cruising during hurricane season .

When is the Best Time to Book a Cruise Vacation?

By Carnival Cruise Line

When you think of going on a cruise vacation, do you imagine exploring new places, delicious food (both on board and off), and admiring the sunset from the ship’s deck? If so, you’re on the right track. Truly, these are all part of what makes cruising a phenomenal experience.

So, when’s the best time to book a cruise vacation ? These tips below will help you decide.

Who is Going on the Cruise?

Summer holidays offer excellent cruising opportunities for families. The kids are out of school, spirits are high, and the weather is just right. Plus, there are plenty of great destinations just waiting for you.

A summer cruise is a wonderful way to make family memories. Kids will also love and cherish making their own new friends. Here are just a few of the onboard clubs and activities designed for kids and teens:

little boy getting ready to cross skycourse on one of carnival’s ships

Seuss at Sea® – Arts & crafts, a character parade, interactive stories, and movies are just some of the whimsical activities your kids can experience from the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss.

WaterWorks® – An outdoor water park complete with waterslides, racing slides, splash pads and lighting effects. Let your kids take full advantage of cruise life as they splash the day away.

The Warehouse Arcade – Great for kids and teens, the ship’s very own video arcade is packed with all sorts of games they know and love, including multi-player games like air hockey and driving games.

If you’re not cruising with children, you may want to set sail during the school year when fewer families are on board. For a girls’ weekend, couples cruise or any other adults-only vacation plans, fall could be the best time to enjoy life on the cruise ship .

Any time of year, whether the kids are along or not, you can escape to the onboard Serenity Adult-Only Retreat™ . This exclusive 21+ space is made for a break from the main deck’s nonstop action. Here, you can enjoy calm sea breezes while sipping cocktails. Aaah.

Where Are You Cruising To?

With so many exciting cruise destinations like the Caribbean, Hawaii, The Bahamas , Mexico, Alaska and more, picking your ideal location can help you plan when to book your cruise.

Perhaps you’ll love the outdoorsy, rugged, and extraordinary wonders of an Alaskan cruise . Discover beautiful glaciers and wilderness and come back with stories to tell!

In Hawaii, you can get up close to a volcano, experience some of the world’s most famous beaches, and learn to hula at a real luau.

Or, head for the Caribbean ! With a variety of destinations chosen from among the region’s more than 5,000 islands and cays, there is plenty of paradise to enjoy. A Caribbean cruise also offers a fascinating mix of cultures and flavors to explore.

Wherever you decide to go, Carnival has put together some incredible experiences and picked the best times of year for you to savor every minute of your cruise vacation.

Plan for the Weather

No matter where you’re going, it’s easy to plan for the best weather. Cruisers to Alaska will want to go in the summer when the sun is out and temperatures are pleasant. Conveniently, most cruises to Alaska depart in these ideal summer months, with a few in the shoulder months of late spring and early fall.

If you’re dreaming of sand and sun, cruises to popular destinations like the Caribbean, The Bahamas, and Mexico depart all year round. In these sunny destinations, temperatures will vary only slightly from season to season, with the summer months being the hottest. Even in the wetter months, you’ll see short-lived rainfall that clears quickly and cools things off.

For Hawaiian destinations , you’ll have temperature and rainfall variations depending on when you go and which islands you visit. While the weather is quite pleasant all year round, summer tends to be the hottest. This makes it a great time to visit some of those famous beaches. The months from April to October are drier, while the wettest time is between November and March. Do some research to narrow down your favorite islands!

Book Early and Save

Booking early not only means you’ll get a great price, but you’ll have more time to look forward to and plan for your cruise! Studies actually show that anticipation is one of life’s greatest joys and having something to look forward to contributes to overall happiness.

You have options for your cruise, but here’s a hot tip – fall has some of the best prices of the year . After the summer crowds have died down and the weather is nice and breezy, you can take advantage of some great deals to amazing destinations . Where will you go?

Save Even More with Carnival® Mastercard®

While booking early or traveling during the fall are fantastic ways to save on your cruise vacation, FunPoints® help your budget too! How do you earn them? With a Carnival Mastercard. The fun starts with your very first purchase, where you can earn bonus FunPoints, which can be redeemed for a statement credit.

The Cheapest Time to Book A Cruise

Richard Simms

Richard Simms

  • September 8, 2019

If you’re looking to save money on sailing with Carnival Cruise Line, a new study indicates that the best time to book is 10 weeks before the cruise.

ALLURE

Want to save on a Holland America Line voyage? Book one week in advance.

And if you’re hoping to save some bucks on Disney Cruise Line, the ideal time to book is one week before the scheduled departure. So says the data compiled by price-drop monitoring site CruiseWatch.com.

How To Find Last-Minute Cruise Deals

CL EC Balcony5

This approach to booking is not for everybody. If you’re the type of person who needs to know six months in advance where your cabin is, what time you’ll be eating dinner, and where you will be sailing to… move on. But if you’re flexible with your dates (meaning you might wind up booking a different week or even month than you’d initially intended), this information could prove invaluable.

“Determining the right moment to book a cruise on one’s preferred cruise line is the most crucial factor to save money,” says Markus Stumpe, CEO, and co-founder of CruiseWatch.com.

READ MORE: 15 Cruise Tips Everyone Should Know

For example, the company’s data indicates that if you are a fan of Princess Cruises, you can save up to 55 percent by waiting until one week before a ship’s scheduled departure to book.

Of course, to take advantage of such amazing deals, you have to make sacrifices.

For example, there’s a good chance that the rooms available will be inside or oceanview staterooms. Suites tend to be booked far in advance, so the odds of them being available (let alone heavily discounted) at the last minute are pretty slim. A Concierge Suite on a Disney Magic suite recently saw a 28% price drop in the weeks before its departure, so it never hurts to check.

The Pros (And Cons) to Last-Minute Cruise Bookings

unnamed

The information was compiled by looking at more than 25,000 different sailings from 2018. “What remains true, year after year,” says Stumpe, “is that it pays to be a little flexible, especially regarding cabin type or cruise ship, unless you are looking for a specific cruise itinerary.”

How much money can one save? The amount is not insignificant. While it, of course, will vary, CruiseWatch found that by booking a Holland America Line ship one week in advance, passengers could save up to 59 percent.

The best deals on Royal Caribbean International sailings tended to be found about nine weeks out, at which point savings could be as high as 36 percent. The best way to score a deal on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship? Book a single week in advance, and you might land as much as a 55 percent discount.

One thing you probably won’t get if you book with Norwegian at the last minute? The Free At Sea perks that they’re famous for. Most of these last-minute deals would be considered “sail-away rates,” which are not qualified for most offers or promotions.

But given some of the fantastic rates available, that might not necessarily matter.

Norwegian Getaway Aerial 2

For example, a recent 5-day sailing of the Norwegian Sun had inside rooms available for $129 per person. For solo travelers, the deal was even better as the dreaded “single supplement” (which sees the price double for solo guests, as rooms are typically booked per person with a double-occupancy required).

Another thing to be aware of is that these last-minute deals often come at the price of surrendering control over things like stateroom location. At these prices, you’re going to wind up in the stateroom they have available as opposed to one meeting your specific needs. So if you absolutely must be near an elevator or dread the idea of winding up above a noisy venue, this is probably not a great option.

If you’re flexible, keeping an eye out for last-minute deals could save you enough money that you’re able to squeeze in an extra cruise or two over the course of the year.

cheap time to book cruise

Cheapest Month to Book a Disney Cruise

When you book a Disney cruise during a cheaper time of the year, you can experience a magical vacation for an affordable price. How else can you lower the cost? Here’s a look at the cheapest month to book a Disney cruise so you won’t break the bank!

Which Month is Cheapest for A Disney Cruise?

Cruises are less expensive several times of the year, but one month stands out as the cheapest.

Overall, September is the cheapest month to book a Disney cruise. This is due to two factors: the schools are back in session after the summer recess, and hurricane season is underway. Because of these factors, the Bahamas and Caribbean are less popular during September, which results in lower fares.

When it comes to European sailings, the shoulder season has the lowest fares. The Mediterranean’s least expensive months are March, April, and November. May and October are the most affordable for Northern European cruises.

Some places are not at risk from hurricanes (such as Europe and Alaska ), but if you intend to sail to the Bahamas or the Caribbean , you should be aware of the hurricane threat. While this is a risk, it could be worth it because the rates are less expensive, and the weather is pleasant despite the possibility of storms.  Travel insurance may be wise if you plan to take a Disney Cruise during hurricane season .

In addition, September isn’t a popular month to go on vacation because children are back in school after Labor Day, and parents are usually back at work.

Other Months When Disney Cruises are Cheaper

January and early february.

January (except around New Year’s) and early February are cheaper than average. The weather is still pleasant in the Bahamas and the Caribbean, so you can take advantage of lower prices and escape the cold winters back home.

May is another cheaper month to travel. The weather is starting to heat up in many destinations, but you can find good deals on airfare and accommodations. Students are still in classes during May, so families usually don’t take summer vacations until June, July, and August. For these reasons, May is another great month to take a Disney cruise.

September is usually the cheapest month to take a Disney Cruise, but October can also be affordable.

Since the weather is cooler, you will not have to worry about the heat. Since it’s not peak season, you will find cheaper airfares. You can also take part in Halloween-themed cruises during October.

Early November and Early December

Early November and early December are also typically cheaper months to book a Disney cruise.

This is the shoulder season in many places, so you can find great deals if you’re flexible with your travel dates. Just steer clear of Thanksgiving week/weekends and the weeks around Christmas and New Year’s because they are very popular (and expensive) weeks to book a Disney cruise.

What Months are Expensive for Disney Cruises?

Disney cruises are most expensive during holiday weeks and summer . The higher prices are due to higher demand, as kids are on school break and families have more time to go on vacation. In other words, the best time for prices isn’t necessarily the best time for your schedule.

The most expensive time to take a Disney Cruise is during the summer months. The reason for higher prices is a higher demand: when kids are on school break, families have more time to spend on vacation — and Disney tops the list of best cruise lines for kids .  If you’re looking for the cheapest month to take a Disney Cruise, avoid June, July, and August .

The holiday season and increased demand make mid-December through New Year’s week an expensive time to travel. Thanksgiving week also tends to be a costly week for cruises since very few schools are in session.

Other times to avoid February vacation, Spring Break, and April vacation .  Disney cruises with special themes may also be more expensive. Examples include Pixar Day at Sea, Halloween on the High Seas, and Very Merrytime Cruises.

If possible, it’s best to avoid these dates altogether and wait until an off-peak time. You’ll experience lighter crowds and cheaper fares on Disney cruise ships .

Tips for Finding the Cheapest Time to Book a Disney Cruise

Off-peak / off-season times to go on a disney cruise.

If you want to save money on your Disney Cruise, try to travel during the off-peak season. Off-peak cruises occur during the weeks and months when families are less likely to travel. Most of the time, off-peak coincides with the school year, especially during the summers and holidays or long weekends.

As outlined in the previous section, notable off-peak times include January through early February, May, September, October, and Early November and Early December. You’ll be able to find lower Disney cruises fares and lower airfare when fewer people are traveling.

Weekdays vs. Weekends

When booking your Disney Cruise, consider whether it’s cheaper to travel during the week or on the weekends (if the itinerary you’ve chosen sails on different days of the week throughout the year).

It’s often cheaper to travel during the week because fewer people are vacationing at this time. However, some weekends may have special deals, so check both options before booking. The more you’re flexible with your travel dates, the more chances you’ll have for finding the cheapest dates to book a Disney cruise.

How to Make your Disney Cruise Cheaper

You should consider these factors when trying to find the best Disney cruise fares.

Book Early for Cheaper Cruise Fares

You should plan and book a Disney cruise as early as possible for several reasons.

First, you’ll get the best price when you book early. Unless you luck out on a last-minute deal, Disney cruise prices are cheapest the day they go on sale and increase in costs as the ship fills up.

Secondly, you’ll have the best selection of cabin types. If you wait too long, you may only have a few options, and they may not be the ideal stateroom for you and your family.  Higher-priced stateroom categories may be the only choices remaining because staterooms with the lowest prices sold out earlier.

Finally, booking your cruise a year in advance gives you more time to plan your trip and ensure everything is in order before leaving. By doing this, you can avoid any last-minute surprises or changes. It also gives you more time to pay down your trip if you have set up a payment plan with your travel agency.

So don’t wait – book your Disney cruise today!

Book with a Disney Travel Agent

There are a few different ways that a Disney travel agent can find you the cheapest Disney cruise ship departure. They will search through all the available sailings to find one that meets your needs and budget.

They can create a custom package for you that includes all your activities and help create a payment plan so you don’t have to pay it all at once.

Travel agents also have access to special rates and discounts that you may not be able to find on your own. So, if you’re looking for the cheapest Disney cruise ship departure, be sure to talk to a travel agent. They’ll be able to help you find the best deal for your family.

Their team of experienced Disney travel agents will help you find the lowest price and the best itineraries , and there’s never an additional charge for their services!

Look for Onboard Credit

Onboard credit is a type of credit (or free money) used towards expenses on a Disney cruise ship. Guests can use it to pay for excursions, alcohol, souvenirs, or tip crew members .

Disney travel agents typically give onboard credit to guests who book their cruise through them (as a booking incentive). The onboard credit amount varies depending on the book method and the cruise cost. For example, guests who book an $8,000 cruise through a travel agent may receive $400 in onboard credit (or $200 if it’s an onboard bookings/transfers). It’s a great perk!

We again recommend The Vacationeer because they offer some of the highest onboard credit rates in the industry.

Onboard credits go towards your on-ship purchases through your onboard account. Not familiar with the onboard account?  Here’s an overview:

Check for Special Offers, Deals, and Promotions

If you plan a Disney Cruise trip, you must be aware of Disney’s special promotions. These deals can make your Disney cruise less expensive no matter which month you book.

It is common for Disney Cruise Line to run limited-time promotions for specific sailing dates, departure ports, cabin types, or even residents of particular states or countries. While there may not be a lot of Disney cruise deals to choose from, you may be able to find one that meets your needs and budget.

Disney Cruise Line frequently offers special discounts on cruises for Florida residents, US military members, Castaway Club members , and Disney Vacation Club members.

It is essential to read the fine print on the promotions page, as some deals may be for guaranteed fares with many restrictions. You can also ask your travel agent to check for any discounts you may qualify for. In some cases, they can ask Disney Cruise Customer Service to add a newly-announced discount to your existing booking.

The best way to save money on Disney cruises while still receiving the magical cruise of your dreams is by taking advantage of Disney’s special promotions and sailing during the months when Disney cruises are cheaper.

Last Minute Restricted Guarantee Staterooms May Be Available

If you’re flexible with your travel dates and stateroom type, you can save money on your Disney cruise by booking a Restricted Guarantee stateroom.

With this type of stateroom, you won’t know your exact room assignment until about two weeks before your cruise, but you’re guaranteed to get at least the stateroom type you booked. So if you’re willing to take a chance on your stateroom assignment, you could save money on your Disney cruise.

While we like the idea of the Restricted Guarantee stateroom in principle, we still recommend booking well in advance to get the best fare and room of your choice.

Shorter Cruises Are More Affordable

If you want to take a Disney cruise but are worried about the cost, booking a shorter one might be the best option. Shorter cruises are less expensive per night, so you can save money while still getting the whole Disney cruise experience.

Disney offers three- and four-night cruises to Baja, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. If you have never been on a Disney cruise before or are worried about seasickness, these shorter cruises are the perfect way to try them out. They’re also less expensive per night than a week-long cruise, so you’ll get all the benefits of a Disney cruise without breaking the bank.

Inside Cabins Are Cheaper

Consider booking an inside cabin if you want the lowest fare on your next Disney cruise. Inside cabins are without a porthole window or a veranda/balcony, making them the most affordable option on any cruise line. On Disney ships, inside cabins have a few added features that make them feel less dark and enclosed.

For example, Disney Wish has a giant piece of artwork on the wall of its inside staterooms. Disney Magic and Disney Wonder have inside staterooms with a porthole-shaped mirror on the wall. The Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy take it one step further with magical portholes – round video screens that show a real-time view of the outside, along with a bit of additional character from time to time.

So if you’re looking to save money on your next cruise, consider booking an inside cabin on a Disney ship. You may be surprised at how comfortable and spacious they are.

What is the cheapest time of year to take a Disney cruise?

Let’s sum up this article, shall we?

  • September is the cheapest month to book a Disney Cruise Line vacation, but some off-peak weeks and months are also more affordable. If you want the lowest fares, avoid holidays, school vacation weeks, and the summer.
  • There are often discounts for Florida residents, military members, Castaway Club members, and Disney Vacation Club members, as well as other limited-time promotions. Check to see which one you may be eligible for before booking your Disney cruise.
  • We recommend working with a knowledgeable Disney travel agent. They will help you plan and book your trip, apply applicable discounts to your package, and set up a payment plan if you wish. They can also give you valuable onboard credits to apply to your stateroom account.
  • If you want to save more money, consider shorter cruises, inside cabins, or booking a Restricted Guarantee Stateroom. However, your best bet for the lowest fares and best selection of staterooms is to book as early as possible.

When you combine these ways to save on a Disney cruise with an off-peak time to sail, you have the best chance of getting the lowest possible fares.

We hope our Cheapest Month to Book a Disney Cruise article has been helpful. Enjoy your magical cruise!

How can i find a cheap cruise.

Cheap cruise deals are fairly easy to find in most cases, and you can begin by considering what kind of features and itinerary you want. The more simplistic the experience is, the cheaper it is in general. On Expedia.com, you can filter for specific features and sort your results by price. By mixing and matching certain features, unforgettable experiences may be available with discount cruises. For example, booking a cruise with stunning restaurants and live performances while opting for an inside cabin without an ocean view window or balcony could be ideal for a traveler who doesn't plan on spending much time in their cabin anyways

What is the cheapest month to take a cruise?

The cheapest month to take a cruise varies based on your destination and the cruise line company that runs the ship. A Caribbean cruise , for example, is generally cheapest in the late summer and early fall since it's the local hurricane season.

Can I cancel my cruise booking?

Yes, you can cancel, but there may be fees for canceling depending on how far in advance you cancel and what kind of booking you have. You can check the specific cruise lines’ cancellation policies in your itinerary on Expedia.com.

Are river cruises worth the money?

River cruises are quite relaxing, with much more varied scenery than you'd experience on an ocean cruise. These ships often also feature several stops along the river, so passengers can enjoy a greater variety of destinations to explore. Viking river cruises are especially adept at providing this unforgettable experience.

What cruises are best for families?

The best family cruises in 2024 / 2025 tend to be Disney cruises with plenty of offerings for kids and adults alike, though MSC cruises are known for their iconic Children Cruise Free promotion. Disney cruises, specifically, are essentially a Disney theme park on a boat with live shows, rides, and attractions with your kids' favorite characters.

How much does a cruise ship cost?

Cruise prices can vary quite a bit, with cheap cruises and especially luxurious all-inclusive cruises available. Budget lines can offer cruise tickets as low as $50 per night in some cases, while the more high-end experiences can reach up to $1,000 per night and more.

What are some of the best cruise lines?

Several different cruise lines have a lot to offer, such as Viking cruises , which are known for traversing oceans and rivers with a style that blends outdoor and indoor splendor. Celebrity cruise line is more upscale with luxurious features like WiFi, included beverages, champagne, and suites with panoramic views. Other top cruise lines include Royal Caribbean International , Carnival Cruise , Disney Cruise , and Norwegian Cruise .

How far in advance do you need to book a cruise?

It's generally best to book a cruise about 6 to 12 months before your cruise departure. That's the safest way to balance availability and affordability. Technically, you can book earlier or later than that, with some last-minute cruise deals occasionally available up to a weekbefore cruise departure.

Are cruise trips affordable?

They can be, and it's especially simple to search for more affordable cruises with Expedia.com. Not only can you filter by cruise length, cruise line, and cabin experience, but you may also sort your results by price to put the more affordable options first on your search results page.

What is it like to go on a cruise?

A cruise is generally designed to offer the most relaxing experience possible. Despite the size of the ship, it's possible to feel the wave. Many passengers report that the movements help them sleep. Additionally, many fun cruises offer live stage performances, several restaurants, and shopping opportunities. When the ship is in international waters, you may even be able to enjoy a bit of tax-free shopping.

Are cruises a good way to travel?

Cruise travel is great if you're looking for some varied fun. Compared to a plane or a train, cruises have their own attractions and can be considered an integral part of cruise vacations. Plus, a cruise can hit several different destinations as well, with plenty of time to enjoy the cruise and scenic locales. It's certainly worth it for a unique experience no other method of travel can match.

Which cruise line is the cheapest?

The actual cheapest cruise available depends on a variety of different factors. Still, Carnival Cruise tends to be very affordable overall, most of the time with great options like the Carnival Sunrise and Carnival Horizon . Royal Caribbean is also another fantastic cruise line offering great deals if you are watching your budget.

How can I get the best cruise deals in 2024 / 2025?

If you're looking for some of the best cruise deals, booking through Expedia.com makes it easy since you can sort your cruise search results by price and have access to special deals. What do I need to know when I book a cruise?

To book a cruise, you'll need to know where you'll be setting off from and where you'll be going, in addition to how many people will be with you and the features of the specific cruise you book. Keep in mind that you'll want to factor in spending money in your budget for the cruise's restaurants and shops in most cases.

Where should I go on a cruise in 2024 / 2025?

Plenty of incredible cruise destinations are accessible such as cruises to the Bahamas and cruises to Mexico . You may also be interested in cruises to Alaska or cruises to Europe for something outside of the Caribbean.

What countries are best to visit by cruise ship?

A lot of countries are accessible via a cruise, but the best include a cruise to Australia . However, a cruise to Australia is quite a long trip at sea and really allows you to take in everything the cruise ship has to offer.

Can I get last-minute cruise deals?

Yes, last-minute cruise deals are often available, and you can find them on Expedia.com by inputting your travel dates in your search and sorting your results by price. The deals will automatically be applied to the price estimates so that the cheapest estimates will show up first on your search results page.

Are cruises all-inclusive?

Cruises aren't always all-inclusive, but they can be. If you're interested in all-inclusive cruises, you can activate a search filter for it to ensure your search results only show cruises that meet your all-inclusive standard.

Is food free on a cruise?

Food is sometimes free on a cruise, but there are often specialty restaurants that aren't included with the general booking that you'll have to pay for separately. Check the details of each cruise before you book in the "What's included" section after clicking the cruise on your search results page.

What cruise lines are adults only?

Several lines offer adults-only cruise experiences, including Viking cruises , Carnival cruises , and Princess cruises . With an adults-only cruise, you can relax in a tranquil and laid-back setting without kids running around and enjoy all the cocktails you want.

What cruise lines are considered to be the most luxurious?

Viking cruises are considered exceptionally luxurious, with smaller ships and larger cabins that make them feel more exclusive, but Celebrity cruises offer luxury cruise lines too. Booking a luxury cruise means you can expect high-end amenities including gourmet restaurants, sizable suites, top-tier performances, massive pools, and much more.

What are the best cruises for couples?

Viking Cruises have much to offer for a more romantic experience. Holland America Line cruises can be quite refined and romantic as well, with an adult-oriented experience that's sophisticated rather than rowdy. Romantic cruises offer exceptional service as well as cozy suites for you and your partner to enjoy that's complemented by delicious food often themed around the cruise destination.

Why should I go on a cruise for my honeymoon?

Going on a cruise is a great way for you and your new spouse to be pampered with luxury while also being able to explore a new destination. Whether you're taking a cruise to Hawaii or a cruise to Bermuda , a particularly romantic experience is almost guaranteed thanks to the sheer number of things to do.

Are there any Christmas cruises?

Yes, quite a few cruise lines operate around Christmas, and you can find them easily by entering travel dates around Christmas into your 2024 cruise search. Some of the most popular Christmas cruises are available with Carnival and Disney.

Do I need a passport to go on a cruise?

Whether or not you need a passport depends on where you're going and the kind of cruise it is. Any US territory like Bermuda and Puerto Rico won't require a passport, of course, but you also don't need one if you're on a closed-loop cruise. This is a cruise that begins and ends at a US cruise terminal, even if there are stops in other countries on the way.

Why should I book a cruise with Expedia.com?

Booking a cruise with Expedia.com makes it easy to find a cruise type that works best for you. You can use the cruise finder and sort by cruise line, type, destination, length, and itinerary. One Key members also earn OneKeyCash on all eligible bookings that can be used to save on future eligible trips.

What happens if a cruise is canceled?

Every cruise has a different cancellation policy, but generally, passengers are entitled to either a full refund or a credit for a future cruise at a later date. Remember that they may automatically change your booking to their rescheduled date, so you may have to contact them if that date doesn't work for your schedule.

The best times to book cheap flights for every vacation season

Here’s when to start looking and booking, depending on when...

Here’s when to start looking and booking, depending on when and where you want to fly. Credit: Getty Images/iStockphoto/Lacheev

Nailing down the perfect moment to book airfare can be agonizing. Starting your search too late nearly guarantees you’ll get gouged by airlines. Book too early and “you actually might be missing out on a future price drop,” says Scott Keyes, founder of the airfare booking site Going.com .

To find the sweet spot, embrace window shopping: not strolling down 5th Avenue peeking into the Saks display, but giving yourself a timeline on when to pursue your airfare. The idea is not too early, but not too late. You’re looking for what Keyes calls the “Goldilocks Window.” This is the period when cheap fares are most likely to pop up.

The Goldilocks Window will vary depending on whether you’re traveling domestic or international, and during peak or off-peak times. Use it as a time frame for your shopping, not an immediate pressure to book.

Over the course of your Goldilocks Window, which could be days, weeks or months, Keyes says you should pay extra attention, because that’s the time you have the best odds of spotting a cheap flight.

If you miss the window, you’re doomed.. “It’s not a zero percent chance [of finding low fares] outside of the Goldilocks Window, but it’s a lot lower,” Keyes says.

From breaking news to special features, the Newsday team is covering the issues that matter to you.

By clicking Sign up, you agree to our privacy policy .

Once you’ve established when you should be shopping based on your travel dates and corresponding Goldilocks Windows, try the set-it-and-forget-it method of signing up for airfare price alerts.

If you’re not sure whether you’re getting a good deal, plug the trip into Google Flights. The site will tell you whether a price is high, low or typical compared to past averages.

Here’s when to start looking and booking, depending on when and where you want to fly.

The most popular spots: 3 to 7 months out

Getting to in-demand destinations at popular times will be expensive no matter how far in advance you book, so you’re out of luck if you’re flying to Paris for the Olympics or Tokyo for cherry blossom season. You can still keep an eye out for unexpected drops in price, mistake fares or sales. Or opt to visit during shoulder season when crowds are smaller, hotels and car rentals are cheaper, and the weather might even be better. In Spain, Keyes says, “the weather’s way better” in the spring, September or October than in the middle of the summer.

Otherwise, Keyes advises travelers to start shopping for hot spots during the opposite season (so winter for a summer booking), or about three to seven months out for domestic trips, and four to 10 months for international.

The same is true for flights around nationally recognized long weekends, says Hayley Berg, lead economist at the travel booking app Hopper. For the Fourth of July, for example, you should consider booking by “very early April,” she says.

A regular getaway: 1 to 3 months out

For an off-peak, domestic trip — meaning no holiday weekends, no school breaks and no coinciding with a Taylor Swift concert in the same place — “you are most likely to see cheap flights pop up about one to three months in advance,” Keyes says. For an international trip, he says “two to eight months in advance is the sweet spot.”

That domestic estimate lines up with Expedia’s 2024 Air Travel Hacks Report, which says travelers can save most by booking domestic flights at least 28 days before departure. The report has different advice for international travel, arguing travelers should book tickets abroad between 60 days and four months out for optimal savings.

Summer vacation: February through April

Brace yourself for another gangbusters (read: pricey) summer of travel, and not just for the most popular spots. “Expect even some of the off-the-beaten-path destinations to be busy and expensive,” Berg says.

With that warning, “if you’re thinking about a trip for this summer, start planning it now,” Berg said in February.

Keyes agrees. Planning and booking now aligns with his advice for shopping for peak fares during the opposite season. Per Keyes’s Goldilocks estimate, you should have a few more months to mull it over if you’re going domestic, but be ready to book in late winter in case the right airfare lands sooner than later.

Fall trips: Late summer

Whether you’re looking for an autumnal jaunt through New England, or a shoulder season trip to the beach, “we expect the fall season to be inexpensive as it typically is,” Berg says. “This past year, we saw the lowest prices in fall for domestic trips that we had seen since 2018 at least.” Berg even recommends shifting your big vacation from July or August to September or October, as it could save you up to 30% on airfare.

Get the lowest fares by looking for domestic trips one to three months out, and international trips two to eight months. If you are heading to some of those particularly popular leaf-peeping destinations, start a month or two earlier.

Thanksgiving: May through early October

Per Keyes’s Goldilocks predictions, get ahead of the Thanksgiving gouge by setting price alerts as early as late May. Google Flights data claims the lowest prices for flights around Thanksgiving have hit their lowest 52 days out; following that calculation, you can extend your shopping window through early October.

Of course, you could skip the turkey and go abroad instead. As Thanksgiving week doesn’t mean much to the rest of the world, it’s one of the cheapest times to travel internationally.

Christmas and New Year’s: July through October

While you’re at the beach in the throes of summer, start your Christmas and New Year’s domestic airfare shopping. Keyes says to think about it like winter apparel: you’re going to get a deal on a down coat when it’s hot out, not when demand surges as temperatures drop.

“When Fourth of July rolls around, that’s when you should be looking around for Christmas trips,” Keyes says.

Google Flights data has shown the lowest prices for late December flights appear around 71 days before takeoff. This Christmas, that’s mid-October.

How To Get Cheap Cruise Deals And Offers

Posted: July 3, 2023 | Last updated: July 3, 2023

Cruising is expensive, so researching before booking your cruise can save you money. There are many ways to get cheap cruise deals and save money ...

Booking early for a cruise can lead to the best deals for various reasons. Firstly, cruise lines offer early bird discounts and promotions such as onboard credit to entice early bookings. Secondly, there is wider availability of lower-priced fare categories when itineraries are initially released. Booking your cruise early allows you to take advantage of price protection guarantees, where you can request a price adjustment if the fare decreases before your cruise. You can select preferred cabin locations better as availability decreases closer to the sailing date.

<p><span>Early booking allows you to secure lower rates for flights and hotels associated with the cruise. Lastly, booking in advance gives you more time for planning and flexibility in choosing suitable cruise dates. While last-minute deals may be available, they are generally more limited and offer less choice and flexibility.</span></p>

Cruise Off-Season.

Cruising off-season offers several benefits, including lower prices, less crowding, enhanced service, a more comprehensive selection of cabins, unique itineraries, and potentially milder weather and scenic beauty.

These advantages make off-season cruising an attractive option for budget-conscious travellers seeking a more relaxed and personalized experience. However, it’s essential to consider potential drawbacks such as limited availability and reduced entertainment options during non-peak times.

<p><span>Cruises during school holidays and significant events tend to be more expensive too. Cruises airlines also bump up the airfare at Half Term or Spring Break, so avoid these times if possible. Plan your cruise during non-peak times, such as in February, March or January, to take advantage of lower prices. Likewise, Hurricane season in September can be a cheaper time to book as long as it’s not near Thanksgiving.</span></p>

<p><span>"Save money on groceries" advice isn't one-size-fits-all. For example, not everyone lives near a warehouse store like Costco (and some people can't afford the annual fee anyway). Apartment dwellers can't grow gardens, and folks without vehicles can't visit you-pick farms. And so on.</span></p> <p><span>Fortunately, plenty of other ways exist to keep food prices as low as possible. Use some (or all!) of the following hacks to eat well without breaking the budget.</span></p>

Look for Last-Minute Cruise Deals

Booking a last-minute deal can be a great way to save money on your cruise vacation. Cruise lines often give out last-minute deals to fill some not-so-popular cruises. This is a good option if you are not fussy about your departure port or where you are sailing.

Finding last-minute cruise deals requires some proactive searching and flexibility. Start by checking cruise line websites for dedicated sections or deals. Sign up for newsletters and email alerts from cruise lines and travel agencies to stay informed. Check media platforms and travel deal apps to receive notifications about time-limited promotions.

<p><span>Reach out to travel agents specializing in cruises, as they may have access to exclusive last-minute offers. Being flexible with travel dates and destinations can increase your chances of finding a deal. Keep an eye on online travel websites that feature last-minute cruise deals. Consider repositioning cruises for unique itineraries and lower prices. Book quickly and ensure your travel documents are in order when the time is right. While last-minute deals offer significant savings, be aware of limited availability and potential additional expenses.</span></p> <p><span>For year-round deals, check some popular cruise websites, such as Norwegian cruise line or Princess Cruises, or ask your local travel agent.</span></p>

Older cruise ships are often cheaper due to lower operating costs, fewer amenities and facilities, less demand, market perception, and itinerary restrictions. The reduced size of these ships leads to lower expenses, which can be passed on to passengers through lower fares.

Consider Repositioning Cruises

Repositioning cruises occur when ships are moving between different regions or seasonal routes. These cruises can offer significant savings and cruise deals compared to traditional itineraries, as they may have more days at sea and fewer port stops. These are released a season or two early, so look out for them.
