8 Best Cruise Lines for Young Adults

  • Honeymooners
  • Young Adults

Group of young adults celebrating in a pool.

For decades, the ocean cruise industry catered toward either retired travelers or young families. Those days, however, are long gone. Nowadays, going a cruise is incredibly popular among the younger crowd as well. It’s not unusual at all to go on cruises as a 20-something year old. In fact, many cruise lines now have plenty of amenities and facilities that focus on young people. In this post, we focus on the millennial audience, and have made an overview of the best cruise lines for young adults.

Important : Keep in mind that most cruise lines have minimum age requirements. Similar to renting a car, most cruise lines require that you be at least 21 years old. Make sure to ask your travel agent (call us at 800-498-7245 with questions) about any restrictions. If you decide to book with us (arguably the best option and cheapest price), our agents will work with you to identify the best cruise line for you.

Our Picks for the Best Cruise Lines for Young Adults

Millennials tend to spend their money on experiences instead of on material things. The following best cruise lines for young adults know this and have catered their ships and activities to this. On their ships, you’ll find nightclubs and concert venues, along with things to do like bar crawls, hiking excursions and onboard zip lining.

1. Carnival Cruise Line

Let’s start with arguably the best cruise line for young adults in the world, Carnival Cruise Line . Its name alone tells you everything you need to know, really. Carnival’s “fun ships” are all about entertainment, nightlife and places to relax during the day.

Carnival Cruise Line boast a festival-like atmosphere, including pool parties and active shore excursions. The ships feature some truly unique bars and their newest ship even has its own craft brewery.

10 Best Cruises for Singles of All Ages

Here are some of the best cruises for solo travelers at any age.

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Traveling the world without having to pack and unpack multiple times is ideal. And on a cruise, that's a reality as you head from destination to destination on what is basically a moving luxury hotel (or a floating city, in some cases ).

Being able to sleep in Bratislava and wake up in Budapest in five-star-worthy accommodations without having to drag all your stuff with you is as convenient as it is luxurious. But cruises aren't just for couples or families — they're great for singles as well.

Colleen McDaniel, the editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic , tells Travel + Leisure that cruises are a great place to meet new people. Some ships have single cabins, host parties for single passengers, or even waive the single supplement fee ( river cruises tend to do that most often).

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line offers studio cabins for single travelers that include access to an exclusive lounge with complimentary espresso and snacks. "One of the benefits of sailing as a single is cruises are generally social. That's how they're designed," McDaniel says. "If you're somebody who's comfortable traveling by themselves and looks to make friends on vacation, there's no shortage of people you're going to meet."

But while younger travelers might want to hop around Europe and party every night, someone in their 50s may be interested in a longer cruise with opportunities for cultural immersion. Whatever your travel style, here are the best cruises for singles of any age.

Cruises for Singles in Their 20s

Cruises that last three to five nights are great for singles in their 20s, in part because they're less expensive, McDaniel says. If you do end up having to pay for a single supplement, "it's a little bit less of a hit to your wallet."

New cruise line Virgin Voyages offers exciting journeys aboard their ultra-Instagrammable ship, Scarlet Lady . The four-night Fire and Sunset Soirees cruise from Miami is ideal for travelers in their 20s or 30s looking for a healthy mix of party and wellness. All cruisers must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon boarding.

Another great option is a three-day cruise to the Bahamas from Miami on Norwegian Sky . The ship was refurbished in 2019 and offers 10 dining options, a full-service Starbucks, and a casino for late-night bonding around the blackjack table with your new shipmates. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required upon boarding for guests ages 12 and up.

Cruises for Singles in Their 30s

According to McDaniel, cruisers in their 30s are likely looking for a good mix of "bustling nightlife and engaging in classes, but they also really want to explore and experience culture." She says river cruises that offer things like silent discos and paint-and-wine classes appeal to this age group.

The eight-day Vienna Vibe cruise from U by Uniworld is a great option (note the cruise line is on hiatus until 2023). This cruise line was originally built to cater to millennials, and this itinerary includes excursions like a walking tour of Vienna and biking around Passau. On board, morning yoga classes and a rooftop ice bar ensure guests will always have something to do. A negative COVID-19 test may be required for unvaccinated passengers when entering foreign countries.

Other travelers might want to opt for a South American adventure with National Geographic. The 10-day Upper Amazon river cruise aboard the Delfin II offers a chance to spot diverse wildlife within this impressive ecosystem.

Cruises for Singles in Their 40s

Upscale, bigger cruises on ships from Princess, Holland America, and Celebrity will likely appeal to cruisers in their 40s, McDaniel says. These cruises tend to be a bit more expensive, but "appeal because they have some really great excursions and might go off the beaten path. They're destination-immersive experiences."

The seven-night Galapagos Southern Loop on Celebrity Xpedition is one fantastic option. The Galapagos Islands are a great destination for solo travelers and this cruise is a solid way to see them. Search for sea turtles, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies during the day, and spend the evening in the ship's hot tub or take in one of the nightly lectures by certified naturalists from the Galapagos National Park. All guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon entry.

A seven-day Norwegian Fjords cruise aboard Princess Cruises' Sky Princess is an additional option for travelers hoping to explore another part of the world best seen from a ship.

Cruises for Singles in Their 50s

McDaniel says that a river cruise is a great option for someone in their 50s, with some lines waiving the single supplement fee and putting age restrictions on passengers (since you may not want little kids running around). Some companies, she notes, do a great job of hosting single mixers, which adds to the social experience. A cruise along the Danube or Rhine rivers is always a great choice, and there are several lines to choose from.

Sail along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers on Viking's Grand European Tour , which starts in Amsterdam and ends in Budapest. Along the way, the ship stops in charming towns and major European capitals for a well-rounded trip through continental Europe.

The twelve-day Cities of Light cruise , also from Viking River Cruises, carries passengers between Paris and Prague with several stops in Germany along the way. On board, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the sight of the cities slipping by. For both Viking Cruises, guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon boarding.

Cruises for Single Seniors

A world cruise is a great option for seniors, McDaniel says, as they tend to have more free time. These cruises visit multiple countries over a longer period of time, and after a while, the boat feels like home.

"One of the great things about being a senior is you tend to have a far more flexible schedule," she says. "You also likely have a bit more disposable income."

The 71-day Grand Africa Voyage from Holland America Line offers a round-trip journey from Fort Lauderdale, stopping in Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Greece, Jordan, Tanzania, Madagascar, South Africa, and more on its cruise around the African continent. All guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon arrival.

Cunard's Centenary World Voyages is even longer, at 117 nights aboard the Queen Mary 2 . The cruise includes two transatlantic crossings and stops across Asia, South Africa, and Australia, departing and arriving in New York City. On a cruise this long, even the shiest solo traveler is bound to make a few friends. All guests ages 12 and up must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 14 days prior to travel.

Virgin Voyages has a more laid-back atmosphere compared to other mainstream cruise lines. The atmosphere and demographic are better suited to young adults who’d rather have a party cruise than play shuffleboard.

Scarlet Night on Virgin Voyages. The pool deck is full of passengers and crew throwing a party under the stars

The cruise line works hard, creating an energetic atmosphere. And there are overtly sexual undertones throughout the cruise.

Virgin’s award-wining cruise ships contain several amenities suited to young adults, including

  • a tattoo parlor
  • pajama party
  • a poker room
  • Scarlet Night dance party.

Culinary experiences are a top priority for Virgin Voyages.

Virgin’s cruise ships don’t have a buffet or main dining room. Instead, passengers can choose from Virgin’s more than 20 onboard restaurants and eateries. Each restaurant presents a unique dining experience, with menus created by Michelin-starred chefs.

And their effort pays off.

The food on Scarlet Lady was some of the best I’ve ever eaten. Not just the best food on a cruise ship, but anywhere.

The best part is that every restaurant is included in Virgin Voyages cruise fare .

So there are no hidden fees or upcharges.

Entertainment is another highlight for college students. The shows range from comedy to Cirque du Soleil-Esq acrobatics and everything in between. The nightly entertainment typically runs less than an hour, so you can return to partying without missing a beat.

At night, the Manor transforms into a two-story nightclub , where the party doesn’t stop until well into the morning.

The only downside is that Virgin Voyages cruises are more expensive than other cruise lines.

But the price is worth it when you consider that your Virgin Voyages cruise fare includes the following:

  • More than 20 restaurants and eateries
  • Onboard activities and entertainment
  • Fitness classes
  • Complimentary Virgin Voyages Wi-Fi
  • Water, coffee, tea, soda, and juice

In all, Virgin Voyages is our top pick for young adult cruisers.

2. Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas aerial view from the side

A Royal Caribbean cruise is a choice for active young adults. Royal Caribbean’s fleet boasts some of the largest cruise ships in the world.

Their cruise ships offer plenty of high-thrill activities and entertainment options suited to young adult cruisers.

Royal Caribbean’s larger ships boast rock climbing walls, surfing simulators, zip lines, comedy shows, sky diving simulators, and more.

Additionally, Royal Caribbean offers low-cost cruise vacations perfect for students on a budget.

The cruise line offers plenty of short Bahamas itineraries. The short itineraries attract plenty of young cruisers, the right demographic for creating amazing late-night parties at sea.

Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay private island is another big draw for young travelers.

The private island offers an incredible experience that includes the following:

  • A water park
  • The tallest water slide in North America
  • White sand beaches
  • Complimentary lunch
  • A massive pool
  • A tethered hot air balloon

Young people looking for the party scene will love Royal Caribbean’s bars, nightclubs, and entertainment venues. Royal’s larger ship classes , the Oasis and Quantum-class ships, even have a bar with bionic bartenders.

3. Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Magic Departing Miami cruise port

Carnival Cruise Line is one of the most popular cruise ships among younger travelers. The cruise line’s popularity stems from its focus on the “fun factor.”

As the name suggests, Carnival’s cruises truly feel like a festival at sea with pool parties, dance classes, international DJs, fitness classes, and more.

Carnival attracts a young demographic because of its incredibly low cruise fares .

The low cruise fares make Carnival an attractive choice for young adults.

Plus, the younger demographic means you find some of the best parties on Carnival Cruise Line. The cruise line is known for its lively atmosphere and all-night parties.

Carnival is often known as the “fun cruise line” thanks to its programming of trivia, shows, outdoor activities, and live music.

The cruise line partners with celebrities like Guy Fieri and Shaquille O’Neal to offer unique dining spots.

One of Carnival’s most unique features is the craft brewery featured on some of their cruise ships, complete with their very own craft beers.

The one downside of cruising with Carnival is its popularity with young families. If you choose to spend your summer break on a Carnival cruise, it’s important to know that you will share the ship with many kids.

But if that doesn’t bother you, Carnival is one of the best cruise lines for your spring break vacation.

4. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Prima aerial view while sailing in open ocean

Norwegian Cruise Line is another great option for young adults who like to party. NCL is a popular cruise line for young adults because of its laid-back atmosphere and late-night parties.

Norwegian Cruise Line is one of the best cruise lines for traveling  solo .

Norwegian’s fleet of cruise ships offers plenty of solo cabins. The solo staterooms waive the single supplement, making your cruise much more affordable.

The studio cabins are 100-square-foot accommodations and provide access to the Studio Lounge, where you can meet other solo travelers.

Don’t let the small cabin size scare you. With plenty of activities and entertainment on the ship, you won’t spend much time in your cabin.

NCL cruise ships offer

  • go-kart tracks
  • virtual reality game rooms
  • waterslides
  • dance clubs
  • rock climbing

There’s no shortage of exciting games and activities for young adults.

In addition to their top-tier casinos, young travelers will love the White Hot Party, ice bar, and vibrant nightlife.

How to Pick the Best Cruise

When is the best time for college students to go on a cruise.

The most critical factor determining the ship’s demographic is when you will set sail. As a rule of thumb, the best time of year for college students to go on a cruise is spring break, summer, or fall break.

As a general rule, you’ll find younger crowds and a better party atmosphere when school is out.

If you want to cruise with a younger crowd, booking a cruise during spring break or early summer is best. You will also find younger groups if you sail during late summer or Christmas break; however, you will share the ship with  families and young children .

If you want to sail with younger crowds but not too young, stick with spring break or early summer sailings. Cruises that sail during these times are full of young adults and have a vibrant nightlife.

Shorter Cruises = Younger Crowds

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Another critical factor is the length of your trip. The longer the cruise, the older the crowd.

Younger cruisers tend to take shorter cruise trips of 3-5 days to save money. In addition to being cheaper, booking a shorter cruise has the added benefit of greater flexibility in departure times.

Short cruises are great for college students looking to party and let loose with younger crowds. In recent years, cruise lines have made a big push into shorter cruises, and you can even find some of the new ships sailing with short itineraries. You can find plenty of quick sailing options that visit Mexico and the Bahamas.

Your Destination Matters

Don’t sail to Alaska or Antarctica if you want to party with a younger crowd. Alaskan, New England, and scenic river cruises appeal to older passengers who prefer a quiet and relaxing vacation.

In general, warm climates are where you will find the most vibrant nightlife and party atmosphere. Younger passengers gravitate towards the tropical climate, which offers drinks by the pool and beautiful beaches.

Bottom line: if you want to party with a younger crowd, book a sailing in a warm climate. Caribbean, Bahamas, and Mexican cruises tend to have the youngest passengers.

Newer Ships Have More to Do

As a young adult, you’re probably not looking for a quiet getaway to read by the pool and shuffleboard on the top deck.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

But if you’re looking for excitement and thrill, you’ll want to stick with newer cruise ships.

The newest and largest cruise ships offer more activities and amenities. Cruise lines are always trying to one-up each other. Newer cruise ships guarantee you’ll find more exciting activities better suited to younger cruisers.

Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, and Holland America are popular but cater to an older demographic.

How can I Stay Safe While Cruising?

View from the pool deck of the Norwegian Cruise ship Pearl with live dj in the background

Regardless of where your cruise takes you, it is always important to keep safe while traveling. These simple tips can help you avoid trouble and stay safe:

Use your safe  – Cabins come with a safe. Use it. Keeping electronic devices, jewelry, money, documents, and passports in the safe is always a good idea to protect yourself from theft.

Don’t drink excessively  – Alcohol is a major factor in safety incidents aboard cruise ships. Be mindful of your limits, and pace yourself. There is plenty of alcohol on board, and it can be easy to get carried away. And never accept any drinks from a stranger.

Keep on top of handwashing  – Use the hand sanitizer provided in the ship’s dining areas. Norovirus is a common issue on cruise ships, and with thousands of passengers sharing a confined space, it is easy for germs to spread.

Book the sponsored excursions  – You’ll save money by booking shore excursions independently, but booking through your cruise line is always safer. The sponsored excursions cruise lines offer are vetted and insured to ensure the safety of you and your fellow passengers. Your safety is worth the price, even if it costs a few extra bucks.

Keep track of time  – Pay close attention to the arrival and departure times when you are in port. They are not suggestions, and your  ship will leave without you . We recommend arriving at your ship 30 minutes before the last call to avoid missing the boat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are cruise fares all-inclusive.

Cruise lines include many basic amenities in the base fare, but cruises are not all-inclusive . Your cruise fare typically includes meals in the main dining room and buffet, onboard entertainment, activities, and cabin accommodations.

The cruise fare generally doesn’t include specialty restaurants, Wi-Fi, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, spa treatments, and shore excursions. It is good to see what’s included with your base fare and ensure you budget for the extra costs before booking your cruise.

Can I Drink Onboard the Cruise?

Most cruise lines, including Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Disney, and Princess, require passengers to be 21 to consume alcohol while onboard the ship. Norwegian Cruise Line allows passengers between the ages of 18 to 20 to consume alcohol while in international waters, provided they are traveling with a parent or guardian who signs a consent form at the front desk.

Don’t think you can fool the onboard bartenders. You will make all purchases through your cruise card when onboard the ship. If you attempt to sneak past the bartenders, they’ll flag you for trying to drink while underage. Cruise lines reserve the right to disembark passengers who get caught purchasing drinks for underage guests.

Tip: You can save money if your cruise line allows you to bring alcohol on the cruise ship .

What are the Bars and Nightclubs Like on a Cruise Ship?

You will be happy to know that cruise ships have active nightlife onboard. Whether you prefer a sports bar, dancing by the pool, or a karaoke bar, you will likely find it aboard your ship.

In addition to bars and lounges, most cruise ships have nightclubs full of partygoers dancing and singing well into the night. These elaborate clubs have insane light and sound systems and incredible dance parties hosted by scratch DJs.

Can I Gamble at the Cruise Casino?

Most cruise lines allow passengers over 18 to gamble at their onboard casinos. Remember that some older ships, and all Disney ships, don’t have a casino. But if you are sailing on a new vessel, you won’t need to worry, as  most cruise ships have casinos  full of slot machines, table games, and scheduled poker tournaments.

Tip: Cruise ship casinos have lower odds than your standard Vegas casino. For example, blackjack on a ship pays 6 to 5 compared to the standard 3 to 2 payout.

Can I Smoke Onboard the Ship?

Rules regarding smoking have become increasingly restrictive. All cruise lines prohibit smoking in cabins, and most don’t allow it on balconies. That said,  you can smoke on a cruise ship  in smoking areas on the outdoor decks, and many permit smoking in the casino.

Is there Internet on the Ship?

While at sea, the only internet connection is by satellite. To avoid roaming charges on your cruise , look into your cruise ship’s Wi-Fi package. In the past, cruise ships were notorious for having slow, expensive, and unreliable internet connections.

Today, passengers can find fast internet connections on modern cruise ships. Royal Caribbean, Princess, and Carnival have all made great efforts to speed up their internet connections, but it still won’t be as fast as you are used to, but it will get the job done.

What is the Best Way to Book a Cruise?

There are  many ways to book a cruise , including through the cruise line’s website, online, or through a travel agent. Although it’s easier to book online, you should consider using a travel agent, especially if this is your first cruise.

Booking a cruise is not as straightforward as booking a resort. A travel agent can help you find a cruise that fits your budget, not to mention they can get access to deals and group rates that you can’t find online. Travel agents get paid a commission through the cruise line and usually don’t charge you to book using their service.

I’m glad you found the article helpful! Although it’s impossible to be 100% safe, cruise ships are generally safe places for travel. And cruise ship security is always available if you have any concerns.

Cruise Trail

The best cruise for young adults

You are not too young to cruise and here is why

Old stereotypes die hard. And that is very true for the cruising industry. Once upon a time, a cruise vacation was only for the over 55s. Activities onboard were mediocre, and the best entertainment was a quiz night.

In recent years all that has changed. Drastically. And we’re here to tell you why you are never too young to cruise. And to give you tips about the best cruise for young adults.

Quick navigation

What makes a great cruise experience for younger cruise guests?

Many cruise lines have invested an extraordinary amount in newer, bigger, and more exciting ships at sea. They have deliberately turned their marketing efforts into attracting younger adults, starting with the 20 and 30 somethings.

And that’s not all. We are so relieved that they have realized 55 is the new 40.

Many 55+ travelers take an instant dislike to anything targeted to over 55s. And that’s because most cruise guests over 55 are no different from those in their 40s. And that is active, adventurous, and looking for a fun cruise experience.

Some are couples, others travel with families on multi-generation cruise trips , and many others choose to cruise solo .

Most families choosing a cruise line expect a great all-around experience for every family member. Think adrenaline-pumping activities, fantastic bars and nightlife, an excellent kids club, and fabulous destinations. You are looking for luxury, relaxation, and great food and drink. And you’re looking to make new friends.

A perfect cruise vacation for young couples, families, and solo travelers

So let’s look at how a cruise vacation is now for everyone. And that includes young adults, the older guests, and everyone else in between. It’s about finding the right cruise for you and your family or just for you as a solo traveler .

Cruising is an ideal holiday for 20 to 30-year-olds. So let’s dispel the myth that it’s for “oldies only.” A luxury cruise ship with fun and active entertainment, activities, and shore excursions, is available at a more reasonable price than you may first imagine.

Outstanding activities and one-of-a-kind experiences

Royal Caribbean is one of the best cruise lines leading the way for daring and exciting activities onboard. They offer outstanding kids’ clubs so Moms and Dads can relax. Their latest cruise ship, Wonder of the Seas, offers surf simulators, dry slides, ice skating, zip lining, and much more. This Oasis-class ship also has fantastic entertainment, ensuring the best cruise for young adults that you could want.

Shows onboard are bigger and better than ever before. Some are Broadway quality. Expect great entertainment every evening in the theater. From stand-up comedians to illusionists, singing stars, and entire broadway productions, you turn up and enjoy a night out. All a short walk away from your cabin.

Water parks, fountains, and giant slides will guarantee to bring out the kid in you, whatever age you are.

Bars of all kinds can be found onboard. The latest technology and brilliant barristers (sometimes robotic) ensure a fantastic atmosphere with musical entertainment to suit all tastes.

It’s time to think beyond the traditional ballroom-style dancing of many earlier cruise ships. While that still exists on certain cruise lines such as Cunard , you will find everything from clubs to karaoke with stunning light shows and laser effects. They rival the most modern dance clubs around.

So how does your cruise line retain loyal (older) cruise guests while attracting the younger generation?

The answer is variety. Most cruise lines offer hundreds of cruise routes and destinations to choose from. Ships of all sizes incorporating different facilities onboard mean that there is most certainly a cruise to suit you.

The best cruise lines offer a great choice of larger cruise ships. And this means that the design can incorporate many different areas or neighborhoods onboard. This spreads out the guests. If one in 5000 onboard, you can still move about freely without being overcrowded.

Brilliantly conceived and executed activities, events, dining, and entertainment all fall under the watchful eye of a cruise director. There is, quite simply, so much to choose from you will find that guests do not know all flock to the same thing at the same time. Apart from the dining, perhaps.

The style, variety, and sheer volume of dining possibilities make it impossible not to find the perfect meal that suits you. Cruise lines must and do cater to all tastes. You can inform them of your specific dietary requirements before your cruise, and choices on board should be plenty. And if it’s not, a quiet word to your Maître d’ will soon sort that out.

Kids clubs for young families – from tots to teens

Kid’s clubs and teen clubs are better than ever. They are so good that perhaps your little one will prefer to spend time with new little friends rather than with you while onboard. It has been known.

Outside of club opening times, there is also the option of babysitting. Gone are the days when you may have once contemplated a cruise but felt you couldn’t enjoy the facilities because you’d been running around after your toddler all day. Help is most certainly at hand in the form of professional care and endless kiddie activities.

Family prices for an all-inclusive vacation and cabins to suit all budgets

A cruise vacation does not have to break the bank. Far from it. More and more young adults are discovering just what value for money a cruise can be. From the beginning, you can choose what you want to include over and above your cabin and dining. And pay upfront. It’s an excellent way to avoid hidden costs along the way.

Take, for example, a family of four, two adults and two children, who book a 4-berth inside cabin. All your meals are included. And if you do not want a drinks package, water, juice, tea, and coffee is available in the buffet restaurant at no extra charge.

An inside cabin is the lowest price point, meaning cash over can be spent on pre-booked excursions. And now compare this with a 5-star hotel resort where you pay extra for all your meals, drinks, and activities. Then think how much more you get for your hard earned money on board a cruise ship. Remember, kid’s clubs, most entertainment, and many activities are included in the basic cost of your cruise. And there are always deals to be had.

So for the budget-conscious family, and let’s face it, all of us want value for our money, cruise holidays are certainly worth your consideration. Cruise fares vary between cruise lines, but all want to be competitive and win your business. And even once you are booked, you should monitor the price of your cruise. Any price drop and you can ask for the difference to be refunded.

Remember to check the price of your cruise – even after you have booked

If the cost of the exact cruise and cabin category you have chosen is reduced between the time you pay your deposit and the time your final payment is due, ask the cruise line to refund you the difference.

This is not done automatically. You must contact the cruise line yourself and request this. Alternatively, if you have booked through a travel agent, ask them for help. You could save hundreds if not thousands making the best cruises even better.

You unpack your suitcase only once—more time for fun.

If you are looking for a multi-experience vacation but prefer not to island hop, dislike train travel, or do not want the expense of car rental or flights between different locations, then a cruise is for you. Packing is made easy, and you only unpack your cruise essentials once. Your cabin becomes your second home.

The journey from port to port is seamless, and between all the activities and entertainment onboard, you will be at a new destination before you know it. Seriously. What is not to love?

Nightlife and fun, new friends, and extraordinary cultural experiences

A cruise also fits the bill for the young crowd looking for a bachelor or bachelorette party venue or best friends looking for luxury and fun in the same place. Most cruise lines offer short cruises of 2 or 3 nights which makes the perfect weekend getaway and an affordable price.

A family get-together where there is something for everyone

Love to spend time with your folks but need space to do your own thing too? Or looking for a way for grandparents to spend quality time with the grandkids while you relax? Multi-generation cruises are more popular than ever.

Cruise lines offer large family suites, adjoining cabins, and venues where you can sit together for dinner each evening. It makes for a seriously memorable family holiday. And possibly one of the most relaxing you will ever have.

Which cruise lines are best for the younger crowd or young families?

Most young cruise guests want fun, entertainment with a lively atmosphere, the chance to meet others, and endless activities on board while we are all still active enough to join in.

Choose a newer cruise ship belonging to the Oasis class ships of Royal Caribbean or the new Breakaway Plus class from Norwegian Cruise Line, for example. Bigger ships mean more of everything. These are our firm favorites if you are part of the younger crowd:

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean (voted time and again as the best cruise line) and their unique Oasis-class ships are the biggest ships at sea. Packed full of activities, you will never be bored. When docked in port, these ships will outsize the neighboring ship, and you will understand that you genuinely are holidaying on a floating resort.

  • Oasis of the Seas
  • Allure of the Seas
  • Harmony of the Seas
  • Symphony of the Seas
  • Wonder of the Seas
  • Icon of the Seas (scheduled for its debut sailing in 2023)
  • Utopia of the Seas (scheduled for its debut sailing in 2024)

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line has an excellent reputation for solo travelers and has solo cabins, so you can avoid paying full fare for a regular-size cabin with single occupancy. They are also popular with young families and travelers for fun activities and their many restaurant choices onboard. Some ships have around 28 different venues where you can choose to eat. They offer a “free at sea” concept where you can choose what you want to include in your cruise at one fixed price. Look at the newer ships in Norwegian’s Breakaway Plus class:

  • Norwegian Encore
  • Norwegian Bliss
  • Norwegian Escape
  • Norwegian Joy

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line has long been associated with being the party cruise line. It includes themed cruises, famous DJs, and fabulous deck parties that suit young adults looking for fun. You need not look much further if you’re looking for festivities from the moment you board your cruise ship. Our favorite Carnival Cruise Line ship is the newest Carnival Mardi Gras.

And it makes sense that this cruise ship, with the only roller coaster at sea, has its home port in the fun capital of Port Canaveral, Orlando. Young adults and the young at heart will enjoy the party, and Carnival is a less expensive option compared to the Disney cruise line.

Which cruise lines are best for the older crowd who are young at heart?

By this, we mean the older guests still looking for an active adventure.

Many of the cruise lines mentioned above will suit you too. If you still want a good level of activities but without all the bells and whistles, look at Celebrity Cruise Line as a good alternative. Celebrity Cruises has a reputation for attracting a slightly older crowd, with an excellent dining experience onboard while still having great entertainment on board.

Find your inner adventurer with an expedition cruise

But if you are a true adventure seeker looking for something out of the ordinary, expedition cruises may be for you. If you have a more expendable income and a bigger budget, expedition ships can take you on unique adventures to further points on the globe.

While these expedition cruises come at a premium price, they are often unforgettable. You will try new activities you have never thought you would do. You must be fit and active to join in most excursions and make the most of these cruises’ unique opportunities. An ideal choice if you are always looking for action and adventure, no matter your age.

Remember that you choose expedition cruises for the destinations and experiences you will have in these places, not for the activities onboard. Life onboard has a fun but more subdued tone focusing on guest speakers and environmental experts giving lectures. Hence, you fully immerse yourself in the off-the-beaten-track destination experience. Expedition cruises are aimed at adults, with few young families on board.

Top 8 essential search criteria when looking for the best cruise for young adults

  • Consider shorter cruise trips of between 3 to 5 nights if you have limited travel time or have a lower budget. A short cruise could be the best for young adults looking to celebrate a wedding, bachelor or bachelorette party, or just a few days away with good friends.
  • Research your itinerary and see how long your ship stays in port daily. If you are lucky to have an overnight stay, you can enjoy the local nightlife the destination offers. Do your own shore excursions to save money, as cruise shore excursions tend to be pricier.
  • Look for a departure port that is driveable or easy to reach. Cutting down on transportation expenses means more money for the onboard experience.
  • If you have a young family, look at the kid’s clubs offered by each cruise line. There are often babysitting options too. And by kids clubs, we also mean clubs for teens. So if you are doing a generation trip traveling with a large family, everyone will get the chance to meet other youngsters of a similar age.
  • If you are younger travelers cruising together, share a cabin to keep down costs. Alternatively, get adjoining cabins to share the fun! Open the connecting door, and you will feel like you and your friends will have more space. Modern cruise ships have many connecting cabins onboard.
  • Once you have booked, make sure you monitor the price of your cruise. If the price goes down, you can ask the cruise line to refund the difference! So be vigilant and check often. After all, the best cruise for young adults is also one that can save you money along the way.
  • When you have chosen the cruise line that suits you, sign up for their newsletter. You will get special offers and campaign information in your mailbox.
  • If your best cruise for young adults is one where you are traveling solo, join the roll call for your chosen cruise on Cruise Critic. In addition, find the Facebook group for your particular cruise and get to know folk before you leave home!

Princess Cruises are some of the best cruises for multigenerational travel , with activities for everyone from kids, to teens, to adults of all ages.

Princess has some things other cruise lines don’t, that your teenager may really appreciate. In particular, Ocean Medallion.

Ocean Medallion has really taken the cruise ship experience to the next level. There are so many awesome features, which really enhances the cruising experience.

Celebrity Cruises has a reputation of being an upscale cruise line that attracts an older crowd. While some elements of this may be true, in my opinion, Celebrity has some of the best teen centres at sea.

Celebrity is great for teenagers to make new friends, while parents get a luxurious and relaxing vacation

The Teen Club on Celebrity is pretty cool. Teenagers have their own hangout spaces. Some of the activities on Celebrity include pool parties, movie nights, sports tournaments and video games.

On Celebrity cruise ships, you’ll find really cool pool areas, hot tubs, a video arcade, a miniature golf course and a basketball court.

The food on Celebrity is amazing and the service can’t be beat. They have plenty of food options in the main dining room that will be appealing to teenagers, even if they are picky eaters.

Are Cruises Safe for Teenagers?

Cruises are very safe for teenagers. Cruises give teens their freedom to explore and have fun, while still being confined to a cruise ship. The teen club is a great place to hang out safely, and meet up with friends.

As with any vacation, talk with your teen about the rules and general safety precautions before your cruise. As long as the teenager is responsible, there is no reason to be worried about their safety on a cruise ship.

Best kid-friendly cruises: The 7 best cruise ships for kids

Erica Silverstein

Editor's Note

Kids can make or break your family cruise. If they're bored and hate the food options, they will loudly and repeatedly express their displeasure. Pick the wrong cruise ship, and parents will feel as trapped as if they were stranded on a deserted island … with biting crabs underfoot.

The best cruises for kids take advantage of ships with endless fun for the under-18 crowd, plentiful dining that appeals to both young palates and bottomless teen tummies, accommodations and ship services that keep families in mind, and opportunities to meet and hang out with peers. No matter your family size or price range, you can find some incredible vacations at sea that will have kids exclaiming, "Best cruise ever!" by the end of the week.

Disney Wish

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

No one is surprised that Disney is such a kid-friendly cruise line — but what might be surprising is how much there is for adults to do and enjoy , too. That's especially true on the new Disney Wish , which debuted in the summer of 2022.

Disney Wish has four kids clubs divided by age, but the main Oceaneer Club for 3- to 12-year-olds has an all-new and exciting grand entrance. Kids get to enter the club by slide — and once inside, can explore the club's spaces themed to "Star Wars," fairy tales, Marvel and Disney Imagineers.

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Along with the kids club on Disney Wish, junior cruisers will find two movie theaters with first-run Disney movies, Broadway-caliber shows featuring Aladdin and the Little Mermaid and dining experiences themed around Arendelle from "Frozen" and the Worlds of Marvel .

In addition to a "Star Wars-" themed bar and adults-only fine dining restaurants, adults will appreciate the little touches on Wish that make family cruising easier — split bathrooms in most cabins, a drop-off nursery, a splash area for toddlers and restaurant staff members who will offer high chairs and puree baby food.

Disney Wish sails short three- and four-night trips from Port Canaveral , Florida (near Orlando) that include a stop at Castaway Cay, Disney's private island , with its family beach, supervised child care, splash pad and strollers to borrow.

A nearly identical sister ship, Disney Treasure , will debut in 2024.

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

It hasn't even launched yet, and we're already confident that Royal Caribbean 's new Icon of the Seas , soon to be the largest ship afloat, will be one of the top cruise ships for kids. Kids will never be bored on a ship with a six-slide water park, wild ropes course, surf simulator, rock-climbing wall, sports court and Surfside — a half deck of play spaces and restaurants devoted to little kids and their families.

Kids (and parents) who like a good show can gasp as ice skaters land jumps on a rocking ship, and acrobatic divers flip and splash in the AquaTheater, now up high on the ship under a glass dome. Don't miss pizza and parades on the Royal Promenade, Icon's indoor shopping strip.

The kid-friendly cruise ship will also have innovative new family cabins and suites, some with separate kids' rooms, to better accommodate guests of all ages. The Ultimate Family Townhouse will be a massive three-floor living space with a screening room, karaoke machine, in-suite slide and a backyard that leads out to the Surfside family neighborhood.

Icon of the Seas will sail weeklong Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Miami beginning in January 2024.

Norwegian Encore

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Norwegian Encore has a more grown-up vibe than many of the family-focused ships on our list, but its onboard attractions make it a huge hit with teens. Its top decks lure older kids with one of the biggest go-kart tracks in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet and an open-air laser tag arena ideal for shooting matches under the stars. A huge virtual reality playground features rides and games that blow the standard cruise ship arcade out of the water.

Note to parents: Cruiselong passes for the go-kart race track , virtual reality games and laser tag do not come cheap. Be prepared to pull out your wallet to keep the teens happy.

At night, teens can feed their growing bodies with tacos, hibachi and barbecue, plus 24/7 burgers and comfort food at The Local. Afterward, they'll agree to be seen in public with their parents at a show as cool as "Choir of Man." It's an easy concession, as they know they can always escape to the teen club, Entourage, to hang out with the cool kids late at night.

Related: 5 best cruise lines for families

Norwegian Encore's best cruises for kids span multiple oceans. The ship spends its summers in Alaska and winters in the Caribbean, with a handful of Panama Canal and Pacific Coast sailings in between.

Carnival Celebration

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Passengers and crew members on Carnival Cruise Line ships come ready to meet new friends or share a laugh, a story and a drink with their shipmates. Social kids will fit right in and love the line's huge, new ship Carnival Celebration . They can make friends at the Family Harbor Lounge, Camp Ocean and Dr. Seuss Bookville; older kids will enjoy the teen and tween clubs conveniently located near Guy Fieri's burger stand and the video arcade.

If you're looking for the best cruises for kids, Carnival Celebration and its near-identical twin fleet mate, Mardi Gras , are the only cruise ships boasting a top-deck roller coaster called Bolt. (That is until a third sister, Carnival Jubilee, debuts in late 2023.) A ride here is Instagram gold and the ultimate bragging rights for kids on vacation. The coaster dominates the Ultimate Playground area of the ship, where young cruisers can challenge their new friends to miniature golf, waterslide races, basketball and ropes course domination.

Kids who love a good food court can meet up with friends or family at several no-fee, casual eateries, including Shaq's Big Chicken restaurant and a trio of Street Eats venues featuring dumplings, meat on a stick and loaded French fries. All-hours pizza and ice cream will keep the whole family fueled up for the interactive "Family Feud Live" show.

Related: The ultimate guide to Carnival Cruise Line ships and itineraries

Carnival Celebration's kid-friendly cruises include weeklong Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Miami. Its sister Mardi Gras sails similar Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral, Florida (near Orlando). Carnival Jubilee will be based out of Galveston, Texas, and offer seven-night Western Caribbean cruises only.

Sun Princess

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

It may seem odd that two of our top ships for kids haven't debuted yet. However, like Icon of the Seas, Princess Cruises ' new 4,300-passenger Sun Princess will be heads and shoulders above the rest of the fleet in terms of family entertainment. If you're booking a multigenerational family cruise for 2024 or beyond, you will definitely want to keep this kid-friendly cruise ship in mind.

Sun Princess will be the first Princess cruise ship to feature an expansive upper-deck activity zone that kids will love. Named Park19, it will feature nine fun-in-the-sun activities spanning three decks. The attractions include the Sea Breeze Rollglider (imagine a safer version of hang-gliding from an elevated track), a climbing structure with obstacles and a slide, a ropes course, a splash zone and a sports court.

Inside the ship, Firefly Park will have drop-off kid programming and family play spaces for kids 6 months to 7 years old. Tweens and teens will each have their own hangouts, Neon Grove and The Underground, with cozy lounge furniture and plenty of video and other games.

Sun Princess will split its time between Mediterranean cruises out of Civitavecchia (the port for Rome), Piraeus (the port for Athens) and Barcelona as well as Caribbean sailings from Fort Lauderdale.

MSC Seascape

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

MSC Cruises ' MSC Seascape is a floating megaresort with something for everyone, making its sailings some of the best cruises for kids. The ship stands out from its sisters because of its Robotron amusement park-style ride . Three riders at a time buckle into seating attached to a robotic arm, which then twists and turns to fly the riders over the ship and sea.

Water babies will make a break for the Pirates Cove Aquapark, with slides, a splash zone and a rope bridge. Other kids might spend their parents' money on more virtual fun, indulging in F1 race car simulators, VR motorcycle racing, a 4D movie theater and a video arcade. Family groups can split into teams for sports court competitions or participate in organized games that rely on the latest technology to challenge guests of all ages.

The ship's Lego-themed Doremi Land kids club has dedicated spaces for babies, kids and teens. The 7,567-square-foot space includes two Lego rooms (one for little kids to play with Duplos, the other with regular Lego bricks for older kids); the area also includes three spaces for teens — a gaming area (with VR options), a hangout with ping pong and foosball and a dance club.

And let's not forget the line's amazing pizza (including dessert versions slathered in Nutella) that families are sure to love.

MSC Seascape sails seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Miami.

AmaWaterways' AmaLea

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

The typical river cruise draws a lot of retirees — except when Adventures by Disney partners with AmaWaterways. The two travel companies have created a river cruise vacation that is fun for grown-ups and kids.

AmaLea makes our list of the best cruise ships for kids because it's one of the ships AmaWaterways custom-built for family cruises. Certain twin balcony cabins sleep three, and suites sleep four to accommodate kids, with connecting cabin options for families who need more space. Unlike many river ships, AmaLea has a pool, as well as a surprise kid hit — giant outdoor chess.

While other ships sail the Seine and Rhine rivers, AmaLea travels the Danube through Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Adventures by Disney makes the most of your time with shore excursions planned to entertain kids and adults, with options for supervised kid activities while parents head out on more grown-up tours. Your family might meet farm animals in Hungary, play hide-and-seek in a palace's labyrinth maze in Austria and hang around in a treetop playground in Germany.

What lines would be suggested for those in their 30's and single to cruise?

The Answer: Carnival for more singles and nightclub activities. Royal Caribbean for the sports deck activities-waverunner, zipline etc. You'll likely have a great time on both. I've been on each 6+ times. I'm more influenced by price, destination and embarkation port. I actually prefer the RCCL ships of the last decade by far but am not as big of a fan of RCCL cave-like Discos. Norweigen CL is probably the other major consideration but I've never been on a cruise with NCL.

  • 4 weeks later...

MICHLEV1974

I am 35. I would suggest any cruise during non-peak vacation weeks and school breaks. Go to the various bars on the ship and def go to the night clubs onboard. There's always someone you can meet! Carnival is priced right and RCI can run some specials. HAL seems to attract a more mature crowd and I am not certain how many singles are hitting the Disney lines.

jerry2457

Carnival has a reputation as the "fun ships" With that I suggest you google "singles cruises" and you will find a company or 2 who specializes in these and does specific trips for 20s and 30s and its a great way to travel. I am sure you will find them easily if you google the words "singles cruise" Good luck with your trip

  • 1 month later...

I've done Carnival, NCL and Royal by myself. I'm a couple of years older (in the slide towards 40) and have met more people (overall) on the Carnival line. Royal seemed to shut down after 10 (even the nightclub was dead). NCL was ok to meet friendly elderly couples, but not a party/meet sort of vibe. On the Carnival cruises, everyone seems to me in the mode to party and have lots of fun, be it couples, elderly, staff... whatever. The clubs are always busy, even with off-duty staff who are warm to the single cruiser.

My cruise coming up is a solo/single cruise. I have already met people on this site through the roll call section, and have no doubt that I'll have a blast!:D

I am 32, single, have been on a number of cruise lines (Carnival, Celebrity, RCCL, Princess, and Holland America) and 10 cruises total. I have a pretty active social life when I am not cruising, therefore, I like to have one while I am on board as well. I only say that so you know that my opinion is not coming from the perspective of a social hermit. I just returned from a Med. cruise on HAL and would definitely NOT recommend the line for a 30 y.o. single, but would recommend the Med. in general if the budget allows.

I would have to put RCCL on the top of the list for me, followed by Princess. If you are on a tight budget, then go with Carnival, but that should be the ONLY reason to choose Carnival over RCCL IMHO. I would HIGHLY recommend Oasis, Freedom, or Voyager class of ships. RCCL's ships are second to none and the size of those classes of ships allow for more options as a single because there are simply more bars and more people. Plus it does not lend itself well to the more aged cruisers because you tend to do a lot more walking on that size of ship (no offence intended). Also, it is important to select an itinerary that draws a more festive atmosphere such as the Caribbean. There is certainly more of a party vibe on the way to Jamaica then say.... Alaska. Going off peak certainly has its advantages, but there are also some draw backs. The lower prices, seasonal comfort, and shortage of school aged kids are nice, but it can be offset by a more "mature" crowd as well. That being said, off-peak is still a very good option for aforementioned reasons. I know that it is hot in the Caribbean during summer months, but the length of the summer holiday season lends itself to a more balanced demographic and festive atmosphere and nightlife. I wouldn't go right after school lets out, but July 4th and beyond has worked well for me. Winter and spring holiday cruises are certainly desirable, but tend to be more family oriented. I know Carnival has the reputation for fun ships, but that wasn't exactly the case in my two experiences. While there is a lot of partying going on, it tended to be pretty immature partying as well. There were always drunk "kids" on the top deck throwing things off and that kind of stuff. I had fun on Carnival after my high school graduation, but my next experience at 25 was considerably different. Lets just say there is NO way I am going back on Carnival if I have the option of going on RCCL or even Princess.

I'm 36. Looking to do my first cruise with a couple friends. We are all single!

The Norwegian Epic looks great! Any thoughts on this cruise?

Rosebud5t

I'm 36 and cruise solo/single. I've only ever been on Carnival and always have a blast. I think any cruise is what you make of it.

Because I'm interested in trying other lines, I've asked a LOT of people and these tend to be pretty standard answers:

- Singles seem to be split down the middle on who likes RCCL and CCL best.

- My best single cruiser friend says he prefers RCCL if he's with someone (family or a girlfriend) but perfers CCL if he's solo/single or looking for more of a party crowd. He agrees with Kristophor that RCCL has nicer ships and we both agree that the bigger ships give many more options.

- People say Princess and HAL are classier, but an older, tamer crowd.

- Many people have told me not to do Celebrity solo.

- Not too many people I've talked to have done NCL solo/single.

Happy cruising!

I am in my late 30s and have been on 2 hosted singles cruises. They are a blast, especially the ones targeted for specific age groups. I did one for 20s and 30s and will be on a 30s and 40s cruise in February. As a single, I am likely to continue with the hosted singles cruises going forward. I had a friend that came on one of the cruises but did not sign up through the hosted company. At the end of the cruise he had wished he did join our hosted cruise and all the fun we had.

If you are a group of single ladies, you probably can meet single guys just by being outgoing and hitting the dance club at night but single guys will probably have a harder time.

Classynfun1

I've spent over 300 days on cruises and am a 31 year old single female. I've been on just about every line. My favorite now? CELEBRITY! Specifically the S class ships. I loved my celebrity Eclipse cruise so much in November that I'm back on the same ship next month. My experience has been a lot of fun, into nicer cabins/food, professional types were in the club each and every night. We were up until 6am one night living it up.

That said, I definitely think the time of the year AND the destination influences the types of people on board more than anything. I think for singles looking to have a fun time at night should do the Carribbean first. Holiday cruises are a great time to go since large family groups are on board and you'll find a lot of mid twenties-mid thirties out and about at night. My suggestion before you book any cruise? Go to the roll calls and read through the ages and types of people on CC that have already booked. I did that and found that on my February cruise, there is a LARGE group of wine lovers that are getting together specifically for this cruise and plan to be out drinking both before and after dinner. That sounds like my kind of good time so count me in!

Please elaborate? Thanks!

The hosted cruises are the travel agencies that specialize in taking groups of singles on cruises. CC doesn't like us mentioning them for one reason or another so we can't say their websites. I can say that singles cruise (use that in one word) has banner ads now in this section. Also if you would like to meet singles at sea (use those three words together) which is a division of and the same as if you needed a vacation to go (use the last three words together again). If this post didn't help and just confused you some more e-mail me at [email protected]

My best friend went on a singles cruise last year and met a great guy. I'm going on one this year. I think this is the one I'm going on -- http://www.facebook.com/events/1494050937521386. The info just came out and it looks like 20-30 years old primarily. Hope this helps!

The 10 best cruises for teens in 2024.

The best cruises for teens provide the right mix of autonomy and time with family.

The Best Cruises for Teens

At Edge aboard the Disney Wish, tweens ages 11 to 14 years old play games and make new friends in a bright, colorful hangout inspired by a chic New York City loft.

Teen spaces on cruise ships foster friendships through games, music, events and more.

Cruises make the perfect family vacation, especially when traveling with teens. Teens can mix and mingle with others their age in teens-only clubs, play games, listen to music, or grab a pizza and watch a movie under the stars. If your tweens and teens need more action-packed fun to keep them entertained, some cruise ships act like floating amusement parks with zip lines, racetracks, roller coasters, ice skating rinks, laser tag, waterslides and more.

The following lines offer the best cruises for teens and tweens, along with their parents.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises offers plenty of family fun and activities for teens on its ships, including sports tournaments, waterslides and a family disco. On select ships, you'll also find the full-size MSC Formula Racer simulator, an interactive XD cinema, a virtual reality experience, zip lines and an arcade room. The Young Club programming by MSC Cruises offers daily activities for 12- to 14-year-old tweens, while teens 15 to 17 can participate in sports and dance competitions as well as video game tournaments at the Teen Club. Older kids can also participate in fun themed events, karaoke, piloting practice at the Drone Academy and flash mobs – and there's a teens-only disco.

On MSC Seascape , teens can stay busy in three new concept spaces. "Future" features a state-of-the-art technology area with the latest-generation consoles, VR and video screens for hours of entertainment. "Chill Out" is just as it sounds – a place to hang out, chat, and play foosball and pingpong. Meanwhile, "Music" is a dance club where kids can choose their own tunes and dance the night away with cool lighting and sound effects. If all that isn't enough, Robotron, the first of its kind at sea, is an amusement park-like ride that combines the thrill of a roller coaster with personalized music and lighting.

MSC World Europa boasts the largest and most engaging kids area in the fleet with an impressive 8,245 square feet of action-packed space. The new Teens Lab features an immersive area for teenagers with more than 20 of the latest consoles, seven VR stations and dozens of video games. Drone Academy 2.0 is a high-energy relay race for drones. There's even more onboard fun at Z Active, a sports program that offers basketball, football and zorb ball alongside two firsts for the line – pickleball and hoverboards. Teens can also take a spin on the bumper cars at the MSC Sportplex.

MSC Euribia – the line's newest ship, which set sail on its inaugural cruise in June 2023 – has a total of 7,500-plus square feet of space dedicated to kids ages 0 to 17. The new Teens Club Extra Space offers three different areas: the Young Club (ages 12 to 14), the Teens Club (15 to 17) and the Teens Lab (12 to 17). Some of the activities include those found on other MSC ships, such as Z Active, Drone Academy 2.0 and the MSC Dance Crew competition. Teens will also have access to new video games; pingpong; World Quest, an interactive game show based on trivia and geography; and Caravaggio, an immersive spy game show about an art heist.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line boasts a teens-only venue, Entourage, which caters to young adults 13 to 17 years old. This supervised space – available on 16 of the line's 19 ships – keeps teens busy in an adults-free lounge that's filled with video games, movies, music, arts and sports. Teen counselors on Norwegian Cruise Line plan activities and challenges to keep kids entertained throughout the cruise. A list of detailed activities is available on embarkation day so teens can plan out their schedule for the cruise.

Norwegian Prima , the first vessel in the Prima class, features many first-at-sea innovations perfect for entertaining families and energetic teens, including the three-level Prima Speedway. With cars reaching up to 30 miles per hour, this quarter-mile-long racetrack is one of the highest-rated attractions on Prima. Adventurous teens will also want to check out The Drop and The Rush. Billed as the fastest slides at sea, these chutes offer thrill-seekers a heart-pumping 10-story freefall plunge.

If that's not enough action, teens can also play The Bull's Eye, a classic game of darts that uses a video tracking system, or check out Tee Time for a pumped-up version of mini-golf set against a Las Vegas backdrop. In the Galaxy Pavilion, an indoor gaming complex, you'll find more than a dozen attractions, including immersive simulator experiences, escape rooms and the Topgolf Swing Suite – all of which are unique to Norwegian Prima. When it's time to cool off, the Tidal Wave waterslide is another first for the brand, letting guests ride inner tubes to catch the surf.

Norwegian Viva, the second vessel in the Prima class, is set to launch in August 2023. As the newest ship in NCL's fleet, Viva will also feature these exciting high-tech attractions, including Viva Speedway. If you and your teens are fans of the movie "Beetlejuice," you're in for a treat: The Broadway musical adaptation will debut on the new ship.

The line's Breakaway Plus class – Norwegian Escape , Joy , Bliss and Encore – is also popular with families as these ships offer plenty of activities and attractions suited for active teens, such as go-kart tracks, outdoor laser tag and VR games in the Galaxy Pavilion.

Disney Cruise Line

The Edge on Disney Cruise Line ship.

Disney Cruise Line features two cool spaces dedicated to teens and tweens, who can hang out on comfy couches, watch shows or movies, and play video games. These hangouts, called Edge (for ages 11 to 14) and Vibe (ages 14 to 17), are available on all Disney Cruise Line ships.

On Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream , the space at Vibe also features a private outdoor deck with chaise lounges, wading pools, foosball and more. While indoors, teenagers can mingle with others their age, or just kick back and relax in individual nooks. There's a dance club area for karaoke contests, talent shows and dance competitions. The trendy indoor-outdoor space – at almost 9,000 square feet – is accessible with a teens-only card or DisneyBand+. On the new Disney Wish ship, Vibe has a French twist inspired by a Paris artist's loft with neon signs and funk pop art.

For tweens sailing on Disney Fantasy or Dream, Edge is a bright, loft-style gathering spot – located in the funnel – that has individual computer stations for gaming and a massive video wall for screening television, movies and games. There's also a lit-up dance floor for dance parties. Two nifty features of the space – and its location – are views of the pool decks below as well as three portholes that allow for glimpses of the riders on the water coaster, AquaDuck, as they zoom by.

On the first night of the cruise, kids receive information on what activities and events will be available during their vacation so they can curate a personalized entertainment itinerary. Some fun options throughout the week may include "Gotcha," a game of elimination where one teen will become the ultimate victor. For a special treat – and a bit of pampering – guests ages 13 to 17 won't want to miss an afternoon at Chill Spa, located inside Senses Spa & Salon.

Royal Caribbean International

The newly updated space for teens 13 to 17 years old on Royal Caribbean International vessels is hidden behind a secret speakeasy entrance. The dedicated venue, which has a gaming lounge and music, is a cozy place to hang out to meet other teens on the ship. There's also an outdoor patio where you can relax in the sun or chill out under the stars. Teens will find planned activities throughout the day at the lounge, including sports tournaments, a nightly teen disco and themed parties.

Social 100 is an exclusive new space for ages 13 to 17 on Wonder of the Seas . The outdoor space sits next to the waterslides and boasts a hot tub, lawn games, cozy seating, a selfie area, and a bar serving zero-proof cocktails and shakes. The indoor part of Social 100 features a gaming area, foosball tables, a vending machine and more comfortable spaces for teens to mingle.

Teens have plenty of activities they can do with their families on Royal Caribbean's ships, especially on the new Icon of the Seas, the first vessel in the Icon class. Slated for its inaugural sailing in January 2024, Wonder of the Seas will be the  world's largest cruise ship .  Cruisers of all ages will have endless opportunities for fun with more venues, activities and attractions than you've ever seen on a cruise ship.

Teens and their parents will appreciate Chill Island, a three-level pool deck with the first swim-up bar at sea. The new water park, Thrill Island, boasts six waterslides, including exciting firsts at sea, such as Pressure Drop, the first open freefall slide. If that's not enough to get the adrenaline pumping, teens can check out Crown's Edge – a combination thrill ride, skywalk and ropes course – or other Royal Caribbean favorites like Adrenaline Peak, Sports Court, the FlowRider surf simulator or the reimagined mini-golf course.

If you're hanging out in the new Surfside neighborhood on Icon, a dedicated space for young families, teens will have easy access to the supervised teens-only club, Social 020, from this open-air space.

When you head ashore to Perfect Day in CocoCay, one of the best  cruise line private islands , teen cruisers will find plenty of fun land-based activities like Thrill Waterpark and 1,600-foot-long zip lines. Be sure not to miss another thrilling experience: Up, Up and Away. The helium balloon ride soars 450 feet above the ground to the highest vantage point in the Bahamas , offering incredible panoramic views of the island and surrounding turquoise waters.

Holland America Line

Club HAL for teens (Deck 10 Midship Starboard) on Rotterdam by Holland America Line.

Michel Verdure | Courtesy of Holland America Line

The Kids Club on Holland America Line offers a fun supervised program for 13- to 17-year-old guests in an adult-free zone known as The Loft. The name is in the process of changing to High Score!, and you'll already find the updated concept on Oosterdam and Eurodam . The line's other ships will change over to the new venue throughout 2024. High Score! is a family game room that serves as a secret getaway for teens by day. In the evenings, entire families can come to play skeeball, board games and join in other activities.

The teens-only space (during the day) on Holland America Line resembles a New York artists loft where kids can listen to music, watch movies, play games and meet and hang out with same-age cruisers. Programs and activities at the current space, The Loft, include themed events, karaoke, a teen disco and nighttime activities such as Poker Night and video game tournaments. Youths can also participate in pingpong, basketball and other teens-only sporting events. If they still need more entertainment to keep them busy, the Kids Club offers origami lessons and watercolor painting as well as competitions in "Mario Kart," air hockey, foosball, pinball and more.

The Kids Club is complimentary for guests. The space is open daily, and you'll also find teen events around the ship. When it comes to dining, there are many teen-friendly dining options – where teens can even enjoy mocktails like nonalcoholic mojitos – at venues throughout the ship.

If you're cruising to Alaska with Holland America or other adventure-filled destinations, look for excursions that will appeal to younger family members like zip lining tours, trail hikes, float trips, helicopter tours and wilderness safaris. Alaska is a teen favorite, especially in Skagway (one of Alaska's top destinations ), where travelers can get a thrill out of dog mushing with a team of Alaskan huskies, taking a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, or going on a rock climbing excursion.

Princess Cruises

Teens play Connect Four on Princess Cruises ship.

Courtesy of Princess Cruises

The modern Beach House lounge is the go-to place for passengers ages 13 to 17 to socialize and meet others their age when sailing on a Princess Cruises ship. Fun activities for teens include late-night movies and tournaments where they can challenge their peers in video games or at air hockey, foosball and table tennis. For more energetic activities, join in the fun during indoor dodgeball and basketball games. Or, learn new dance moves from some of the dancers in the crew, then hit the dance floor for one of the competitions. At the "Rock the Boat Party," teenagers can dress up and party the night away with mocktails and new friends on the ship.

"Movies Under the Stars" is one of Princess' signature events. Guests can watch movies, sporting events and concerts while bundled up with cozy blankets on the pool deck outdoors. Teens will enjoy the complimentary snacks – not to mention the special movie nights designed with them in mind, such as "Scary Movie Night." You might even find teen makeovers and glitter tattoos some evenings on the ship.

The line's three newest ships – Discovery Princess , Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess – offer the most activities for teens, but all of the ships in the fleet host youth programs in partnership with Discovery, along with plenty of other family-friendly activities. These offerings include Discovery Family and Animal Planet shore excursions and onboard entertainment like "The Voice of the Ocean," a musical competition.

Parents will be able to keep track of their busy teens anywhere on the ship with the state-of-the-art Princess MedallionClass system. The quarter-size wearable medallion and accompanying app allow guests to personalize their itinerary and locate family members and friends on board.

When Sun Princess launches in February 2024, as the first vessel in the line's Sphere class, it will feature Park19. This top-deck family activity zone boasts many outdoor adventures, including Sea Breeze – the first Rollglider at sea. The ADA-accessible seated ride offers a hang-gliding experience with panoramic views of the ocean and ports of call. Families and teens can also check out the climbing obstacle course, cargo nets and lookout points. The ship also has a recreational court – which offers pingpong, shuffleboard, fitness classes and more – and a splash zone where you can cool off after all the outdoor activities.

Inside Sun Princess, tweens and teens will find two centers just for them: Neon Grove and The Underground. Both spaces offer cozy and colorful areas for young adults to hang out, socialize, and play video games on the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. They'll also find foosball, skeeball and air hockey on top of planned activities like movie nights, dance parties and scavenger hunts.

Adventures by Disney

Adventures by Disney offers river and expedition cruises for the whole family; the itineraries span many choices and experiences for tweens and teens with a focus on culture, history, gastronomy and adventure. The river cruises are operated in partnership with AmaWaterways, while the expedition cruises are a collaboration with luxury French cruise line Ponant.

If you're sailing on the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise itinerary, for example, guests can choose between various exciting excursions. While you're docked in Strasbourg, France , for the day, teen-friendly options include a tour of the Black Forest, complete with a toboggan run and a visit to a woodworking museum. Another choice here is to visit Germany's Europa-Park, a one-of-a-kind theme park located between the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains. In Melk, Austria, on the Danube itinerary, families can go for a bike ride along the Danube River, hike to the castle in Dürnstein or visit a family-run apricot farm.

Another great feature of these cruises is that teens can opt to have dinner and evening get-togethers with same-age cruisers, so they don't have to dine with their parents or younger siblings every night. Adventure Guides also curate special activities for teens like game shows and pool parties.

In destinations like Antarctica, the Adriatic and the Galápagos Islands , expert naturalists lead tours during these bucket list trips. You might even find a bit of Disney storytelling woven into the presentations by the Adventure Guides.

Keep in mind if you have younger kids as well as teens that children need to be 5 or older to sail on the river cruises. For the Galápagos Islands expedition cruises, the minimum age for Junior Adventurers is 7, and for expeditions to the polar regions, kids need to be 10 years of age or older.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Celebration in Caribbean waters.

Carnival Celebration, which launched in November 2022, is the line's newest Excel-class ship. It features an expanded family and youth program, including its offerings for teens. The line also rolled out the new program fleetwide in spring 2023.

The Carnival Cruise Line teen programming at Circle "C" is for tweens ages 12 to 14, while Club O2 is for ages 15 to 17. In these venues you'll find entertainment like themed dance parties – and even a Carnival prom – as well as video games, movies and karaoke. Circle "C" stands for "Cruise, chill and connect," and that's what teens can do in this colorful, contemporary space with engaging counselors. New activities include anime drawing lessons and pop culture games at Circle "C." Older teens can foster new friendships while engaging in Japanese crafts and authentic tea ceremonies at Club O2.

Teens will appreciate Carnival's onboard water park, Waterworks, which includes a splash park and slides. Carnival Panorama even has the trampoline park Skyzone. Teenage passengers won't want to miss the first roller coaster at sea, BOLT, on Excel-class ships: Mardi Gras , Celebration and the upcoming Jubilee, scheduled to launch in December 2023.

For even more action, Vista-class ships feature Skyride. This two-lane, bike-like ride is suspended above the top deck of the ships and extends out over the ocean. More indoor fun can be found at Thrill Theater (on Horizon and Vista ), an immersive cinematic experience where you'll feel the seat rumble, the wind blow through your hair and even a spritz of water during the action-packed video.

Celebrity Cruises

The Basement (Deck 2 Midship) on Celebrity EDGE by Celebrity Cruises.

Michel Verdure | Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

This line's Teen Club features activities focused on kids 13 to 17. Some of the events offered for teens in the Camp at Sea program on Celebrity Cruises range from video game tournaments and sports competitions to culinary classes and silent disco parties. Teen cruisers can even book glass-blowing classes on Celebrity Solstice , Equinox and Eclipse . The offerings for young passengers are similar at either The Basement on Edge-series ships ( Edge , Apex , Beyond and Ascent, set to launch in November 2023) or at X Club on Solstice- and Millennium-class ships. Note, however, the line's three Galápagos expedition vessels do not have the teen venues. Families who need accessible accommodations, activities and programs will also find autism-friendly cruises on Celebrity.

When it comes to pampering, Celebrity's spas offer spa menus for 13- to 17-year-olds. Teens can book facials that are designed for young sensitive skin or have express pedicures and manicures. When you're ready to relax, schedule a two-by-two massage, where parents and kids can have a side-by-side treatment.

Celebrity also offers family-focused excursions that highlight cultural attractions, wildlife sightings and adventure. Some of these tours include seeing gentoo, king and Magellanic penguins in the Falkland Islands; taking an aerial tram through the treetop canopies of a rainforest in Costa Rica ; and going on a small culinary or sightseeing group excursion in Europe and other destinations around the world. On Caribbean sailings – especially when school is out for summer or on holidays – Celebrity has additional family-friendly shore excursions on its five- and seven-night sailings.

Cunard Line

Cunard Line offers programs and activities for passengers ages 13 to 17 years old in its Teen Zone. This dedicated space is a place for teens to hang out with cruisers their own age and play video and team games, table tennis, and more. On the first day of the cruise, you'll find an activity program for young guests delivered to the stateroom so your teens can plan out their vacation experience, which may include entertaining theme days, deck sports, quizzes and dancing at the disco.

Teens on Cunard Line can participate in the activities around the ship, hit the pool for a dip, practice their putting or try their hand at croquet. If you're sailing on Queen Mary 2, those interested in science, wildlife and the solar system can watch up to four 3D films a day (on sea days) in the largest planetarium at sea.

The Symphony of the Seas is like the Swiss Army knife of Royal Caribbean cruises for teens. It’s got everything. Zip lines. Glow-in-the-Dark Laser Tag. Water slides. Broadway shows.  There’s even an ice skating rink on board. Yes, ice skating. On a boat. On the sea. Forget board games (although the ship has them).

Watch family members try surfing and (maybe) fail epically on the FlowRider surf simulator. Guaranteed laughs for all! (Yes, yes, kudos for trying because that is how we learn! It’s still funny, though.)

We have invented waterparks on cruise ships that sail on water. Shutterstock

Norwegian Breakaway: For the Artsy Fartsy

The name Norwegian Breakaway  fits it like a glove. Break away from the mundane and dive headfirst into the world of neon bowling, Broadway shows, and interactive art installations.

This cruise ship has a water park for younger siblings and one for older kids too. There is a three-story sports complex with a basketball court. Sports tournaments will provide teens with a not-too-awkward way to make new friends.

The Norwegian Cruise Line puts family first with spacious suites and four different youth programs. The teen club is called Entourage and offers “modern, digital, and inclusive options” for 12 through 17-year-olds.

Older teens and young adults will love the spa options, which include a salt room and a thermal spa.

The colorful ship décor provides an excellent backdrop for those hilariously awkward family photos where Dad thinks he’s in an 80s rock band. Plus, the dance parties make for some unforgettable “Remember when you danced like that ?” moments. (FYI- there are complementary dance lessons onboard!) Just encourage those teens to forget their phones before hitting the dance floor. It will be like the 1990s – anything goes!

Don’t Miss: Top 10 Vacation Spots for Teens in the US

Disney Fantasy: For the Kid at Heart

“Aren’t we too old for Disney?” said no one ever. The Disney Cruise Line is one of the very best cruise lines for family vacations in North America. Period. And the Disney Fantasy is a teen dreamboat.

Disney Castaway Cay is Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, which is reserved exclusively for  Disney cruise guests. Teens, there is a beach area reserved just for 14 to 17-year-olds aptly called The Hideout . This place is built for teens to have a great time.

Many of the cruise destinations present port adventures that are designed for the entire family. One favorite is the family scavenger hunt ; it’s so popular that it has inspired many bloggers to create their own versions .

Unleash your inner child with themed dinners, epic water slides, and character meet-and-greets. Teens have their exclusive club, The Vibe , a perfect place where this age group can lounge, play video games (which may lead to epic video game tournaments), and dance without any prying “grown-up” eyes. It’s their Disney Wish come true!

Challenge your siblings to a game of “Who Can Make Mickey Laugh First?”

DON’T MISS! Why The Disney Wish Cruise Is A Teen’s Dream Come True

When mom doesn’t need to make dinner we all jump for joy! Shutterstock

Carnival Vista: For the Social Butterfly

Carnival Vista is the lead ship in the Carnival Cruise Line Vista class. She has an IMAX theater, mini golf, and sports courts (basketball, volleyball, and Dodge Ball!). Best of all, she has the Club O2, which is designed especially for teens to hang out, dance, and play video games. They even offer a cruise-style prom! No wonder Carnival won the best cruise ships for teens in 2017.

Need a laugh? Dad’s jokes not cutting it? There’s a comedy club on board . After a show or two, dad will have enough material to ensure he is the funniest person at the dinner table… or at least he’ll think he is.

Just casually running off the cruise ship onto the beach. Like we do. Shutterstock

MSC Seaview: For the World Traveler

This isn’t just a ship; it’s a floating city . Between stops at world-renowned ports and excursions , there’s the chance to learn new languages while soaking in the hot tub, sample authentic cuisine, and interact with fellow teen travelers from across the globe at the Teen Club. MSC Cruises are a perfect blend of culture, adventure, and, of course, sunbathing.

Make a fun game out of trying to decipher the ship announcements in different languages. The resulting interpretations can range from poetic to downright hysterical.

Now, embarking on a cruise doesn’t mean the family will be adrift without Wi-Fi, looking like the cast from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” by day three… or two. Most ships do offer connectivity packages.

So this is what my screensaver looks like in real life! Shutterstock

Sun Princess: For the Tireless Explorer

This is the newest ship in the Princess Cruise Line . Princess Cruises has thought of everything from the top deck that is home to a ropes course, Breeze Rollglider (forget about roller coasters!) , an infinite tilt wall, and a splash pad down to The Underground Teen Lounge.

The Underground Teen Lounge hosts dance parties, board game nights , and even movie marathons. They will also find virtual reality games and outdoor movie nights onboard.

Younger teens will enjoy The Neon Grove Tween Club. They will find a similar experience as the teens, but with a younger audience in mind.

Just cruising and taking selfies. #CruiseLife

Imagine an enormous, floating resort with endless food, pool decks, and – no chores. Here are the six best cruises for teens and families.

Set Sail Already

There are so many good reasons to opt for a cruise instead of a land-legged vacation, but my teenager’s favorite reason happens to be the food. The endless dining options happen to be a major selling point for teenagers. My 13-year-old often reminisces about his summer cruise with his grandpa to Iceland… because of the endless hamburgers and fries. We are hopeful that with time the memories of the hamburgers and fries will fade and the memories of seeing an iceberg will rise to the surface.

Cruises make excellent family vacations for all age groups. Whether family members are adrenaline junkies, artists, socialites, or Disney fans, there’s a cruise out there for everyone.

The 30 Best Bourbons for 2024

words: Tim McKirdy

Published: February 29, 2024

While agave-based distillates remain waiting in the wings, America’s “native spirit” continues to sit comfortably on the United States’ spirits throne. The bourbon industry administered a $9 billion injection into Kentucky’s economy alone in 2023, and by no means is the Bluegrass State the only major player in the game.

Interestingly, though bourbon’s dominance persists, the narratives surrounding the spirit are in a state of flux. The oft-cited claim that Kentucky makes “95 percent of the world’s supply of bourbon” seems even more absurd with every passing year. Meanwhile, craft producers have become a force to be reckoned with, highlighted by the staggering $420 million Gruppo Campari recently paid for a 70 percent stake in Wilderness Trail , valuing the brand and distillery at $600 million a mere 10 years after its inception. And even the fiercest skeptics are changing their attitudes to once-maligned contract distilling , prompted in part by the increasing transparency of those employing the services of third-party producers.

Take none of this as an insinuation that legacy producers are resting on their laurels. In fact, as craft distillers continue to play catch up, the biggest names in bourbon have forged ahead, introducing the most exciting innovations in recent years. While we’re guilty of stating this in practically every iteration of this annual list, it certainly seems there’s never been a better time to be a bourbon drinker.

Before we explore the specific bottles offering proof of that statement, a few notes on how we compiled this list. VinePair tasters personally sampled 141 expressions that were submitted (free of charge) by producers and distributors, as well as PR firms working on their behalf. Additionally, we considered over a dozen samples that were voluntarily sent to our office over the last year and drew upon our experience with certain products and lines that we’ve tasted every year this list has been published.  In every instance, products were tasted non-blind following our belief that price plays a major role in drinkers’ purchasing decisions, and should therefore be taken into account when evaluating wine and spirits.

While price is completely objective, we understand that “affordability” is not. So this list is not composed solely of the 30 highest-scoring bottles we sampled. It’s a comprehensive editorial roundup showcasing the best bottles at every price.

With all that said, here are 30 of the best bourbons at every price point for 2024.

The Best Bourbons Under $25

Benchmark bonded.

Benchmark Bonded is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

For the same sum as a cocktail in most major cities these days, on offer here is a 4-year-old, 100-proof bourbon produced by Sazerac Brands. Numerical attributes aside, the bottle’s contents are pretty damn tasty, too, with Benchmark Bonded delivering a textbook profile of oaky vanilla sweetness, along with some pleasing berry compote and orchard fruit notes.

Average price: $20 Rating: 87

Early Times Bottled-in-Bond

Early Times Bottled-in-Bond is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

Another budget-friendly bonded bourbon, Sazerac acquired Early Times from Brown-Forman in 2020, with a new chapter of distillation and aging beginning at the company’s 1792 Distillery in summer 2021. Bottles produced there aren’t yet available, but its new owner has made public assurances that its profile won’t change. So continue to expect rich cherry and barrel spice aromas, followed by a surprisingly light but nevertheless enjoyable palate. Though technically priced at $25, we’re including it in the sub-$25 category given its 1-liter packaging.

Average price: $25 Rating: 88

The Best Bourbons Under $50

Wild turkey 101.

Wild Turkey 101 is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

Whether you view it as the best- or worst-kept secret in bourbon, and despite the increasing attention given to new releases from sibling brand Russell’s Reserve, Wild Turkey 101 remains a trusty stalwart. Its eponymous bottling proof amplifies signature notes of vanilla, toffee, and baking spice, while subtle vegetal undertones provide enough character to sip neat, on the rocks, with a splash of soda, or mixed in cocktails.

Larceny Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey

Larceny Small Batch Whiskey is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

Heaven Hill’s entry-level wheated bourbon is immediately approachable with sweet vanilla custard aromas. Larceny’s subtly spiced palate is similarly more suited to beginners than its supercharged, cask-strength sibling, which changes from batch to batch across the line’s three annual releases, much like stablemate Elijah Craig Barrel Proof. Where those expressions offer an exploration of proof and batch variance, regular Larceny Small Batch succeeds via satisfying dependability.

George Dickel Bourbon Whisky Aged 8 Years

George Dickel Bourbon Whisky Aged 8 Years is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

Introduced in 2021, this release uses the same mash bill, yeast, and filtration process as George Dickel’s Tennessee whisky, but the brand opts to label it as bourbon, feeling the liquid closer resembles the style. Semantics aside, this 8-year, 90-proof bottling offers great value, with bright and attractive berry aromas, and a comforting toasty palate.

Average price: $33 Rating: 88

Knob Creek 9-Year-Old Bourbon Whiskey

Knob Creek 9 Year Old Bourbon Whiskey is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

Older Knob Creek bottlings, and indeed most of James B. Beam’s bourbons, exhibit distinctive and prominent peanut and caramel notes. This instead leans unexpectedly into bright red fruit and delicate baking spices. Both price and age work in its favor from a value perspective, and its 50 percent ABV content ensures plenty of depth on the palate.

Average price: $37 Rating: 89

Maker’s Mark 46 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky

Maker’s Mark 46 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

Maker’s Mark made a big splash in 2023 with the introduction of its first-ever age-stated bourbon, which proved a big hit among tasters (ourselves included). Demand has already well-outstripped supply, bringing with it a familiar story of price gouging (not the distillery’s fault). That leads us to instead recommend the ever-reliable Maker’s 46, which was designed to amp up the brand’s signature wheated profile, and comfortably succeeds in doing so.

Average price: $42 Rating: 91

Town Branch True Cask Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (Batch #005)

Town Branch True Cask Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (Batch #005) is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

For a second year running, Town Branch impressed us with its somewhat tame (54.3 percent ABV) cask-strength True Cask release. A blend of the brand’s high-malt and high-corn mash bills, its profile is bolder and more assertive — rich in toffee and berry compote — than the bright cherry-laden Batch #004. By no means is it less enjoyable.

Average price: $44 Rating: 91

New Riff Distilling Bottled In Bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon (Fall 2019)

New Riff Distilling Bottled In Bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon (Fall 2019) is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

Among those craft brands taking the big strides mentioned in the intro, New Riff’s experimental releases are a worthwhile exploration for any bourbon enthusiast. But they shouldn’t distract too much from the distillery’s consistently impressive, flagship Bottled In Bond line. This iteration melds red and dark berry aromas and follows them up with tingling baking spices and just a hint of apricot puree on its weighty, well-balanced palate.

Average price: $49 Rating: 91

The Best Bourbons Under $100

Shelter distilling small batch blue corn bourbon.

Shelter Distilling Small Batch Blue Corn Bourbon is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

With a hyper-focus on ingredients and process, Shelter Distilling crafts this memorable bourbon from a California Blue Corn-dominant mash bill, and using double pot still distillation and slow proofing. Rich Demerara sweetness leads to light sponge cake on the nose, with fruit arriving quietly in the form of tinned peaches. Subsequent servings of maple and vanilla on the palate make it a pastry lover’s dream.

Average price: $50 Rating: 91

Smooth Ambler Old Scout 7 Year Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Smooth Ambler Old Scout 7 Year Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

This standout bourbon immediately captivates with its atypical profile. The rye that makes up 36 percent of the mash bill surely plays an important role, with spice, cherry, apple, and cigar box notes prominent throughout. Smooth Ambler is very open about the fact it does buy and bottle bourbon it deems to be remarkable (as well as its origin: Indiana). And honestly, who cares about the source or blend when the results are this enjoyable?

Average price: $65 Rating: 90

Four Roses Small Batch Select Bourbon

Four Roses Small Batch Select Bourbon is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

Four Roses employs six of its 10 house recipes for this stellar offering, which is classically bourbon in profile, and suffers no shortage of vanilla, caramel, and rich oak notes. It continues to evolve with each sniff and sip — a scent of jasmine tea bringing nuance to the nose and ripe berries and rich spice adding depth to the palate.

Average price: $60 Rating: 92

Wilderness Trail High Rye Bourbon Bottled in Bond

Wilderness Trail High Rye Bourbon Bottled in Bond is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

Long before the big-money acquisition, Wilderness Trail gained recognition for its scientific, data-driven approach to production. But it was the products of that approach that truly impressed whiskey drinkers, including this stunning high-rye bourbon. The flavoring grain makes its presence known via herbaceous, minty notes, and a slightly spicy kick on the finish. It never threatens to dominate, though, and instead blends seamlessly with its sweet and oaky baseline.

Average price: $53 Rating: 94

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

Crafted for those who embrace the heady influence of wood, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked experiences a second maturation period in heavily toasted barrels. The process amplifies sweet notes of vanilla, honey, and butterscotch. And while undoubtedly rich, it never feels overbearing or flabby on the palate. This might not be the bottle to gift the cask-strength drinker in your life, nor those who seek out the latest, esoteric releases. But there’s no denying its mass appeal.

Rabbit Hole Distillery ‘Heigold’ Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Rabbit Hole Distillery 'Heigold' Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

Rabbit Hole’s high-rye bourbon, “Heigold” is pleasing on the nose, with bright bursts of red berries followed by graham crackers and a small dollop of honey. The palate continues in a similar fashion, with the addition of some lightly tannic oak complexity. Rabbit Hole isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel with this release, but it ticks all of the right boxes, especially for its price point.

Average price: $60 Rating: 90

1792 Full Proof

1792 Full Proof is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

Bottled at 62.5 percent ABV, this Sazerac release is by no means a subtle or delicate bourbon. Neither is it defined by overwhelming heat, though. An intriguing range of aromas and flavors instead steals the show, with a blend of umami and sweetness kicking things off. Tangy fruits then take center stage, followed by rich blackberry compote, with decadent Black Forest Cake rounding out the finish. Save for some tannins that challenge that crescendo, this would be a truly standout bourbon.

Average price: $60 Rating: 91

Five & 20 Spirits Deep Water Bourbon

Five & 20 Spirits Deep Water Bourbon is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

At 7 years old and with a price tag of $70, some might find this New York release to be a little too expensive. It’s an outlier in other wholly positive respects, though, including its 95 percent New York corn and 5 percent malted barley mash bill. All that corn translates to a plethora of sweet aromas and flavors, with just the right amount of charred oak bringing balance.

Average price: $70 Rating: 91

Milam & Greene Very Small Batch (Batch 2)

Milam & Greene Very Small Batch (Batch 2) is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

Released in fall 2023, this blend of Kentucky and Tennessee straight bourbon whiskeys was finished with charred French oak staves. Their inclusion brings complex but welcome woody aromas that complement its otherwise stone-fruit and vanilla-rich nose. On the palate, the staves add layers of texture that similarly match its intense range of flavors. Superstar blender Heather Greene has crafted a remarkable sipper here.

Average price: $70 Rating: 92

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch C923

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch C923 is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

The final release in the 2023 Elijah Craig Barrel Proof line arrived at 13 years and 7 months — the oldest of the three expressions put out by parent company Heaven Hill since it dropped the series’ standard 12-year labeling statement. Though this year’s first release (A124) is already on shelves, we prefer the caramel, oak, and black pepper depth of C923, as well as its whispers of citrus fruit. (We can’t guarantee it, but there should still be some bottles available for the near future, at least.)

Average price: $75 Rating: 94

Buzzard’s Roost Sipping Whiskey Toasted American Oak Bourbon (Batch No. 2)

Buzzard's Roost Sipping Whiskey Toasted American Oak Bourbon (Batch No. 2) is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

A blend of 4- and 5-year whiskeys, both with rye as their predominant flavoring grain, this bourbon serves up all of the rich, approachable characteristics we’ve come to expect from labels bearing the term “toasted.” Think crème brûlée and candied citrus peels, along with alluring vanilla and heavy helpings of butterscotch. As for the 52.5 percent ABV content, it barely registers on the palate.

Average price: $75 Rating: 91

Frey Ranch Distillery Farm Strength Uncut (Batch 10)

Frey Ranch Distillery Farm Strength Uncut (Batch 10) is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

From VinePair’s 2023 spirits brand of the year , this cask-strength, farm-to-glass bourbon arrives at 61.14 percent ABV, with a distinctively grain-forward profile. That combination seems like it shouldn’t work on paper, and it’s the same story in real life at first. But with time in glass, and upon reflection, it’s apparent that this is what this bourbon is all about: elevating and highlighting its base ingredients and veering clear of the beaten path of simple oak sweetness. While challenging at first, the experience proves ultimately rewarding, especially with a few drops of water.

Average price: $79 Rating: 93

Doc Swinson’s Whiskey Exploratory Cask Pineau

Doc Swinson's Whiskey Exploratory Cask Pineau is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

For this “Exploratory Cask” release, two Indiana-sourced, high-rye bourbons first age separately for a little over five years before they’re carefully married and transferred to 350-liter ex-Pineau des Charantes casks for a final nine months to 1 year. The resulting blend delivers one of the most harmonious and distinctive bourbons we encountered this year, somehow highlighting both its base ingredients and every stage of maturation. Most notable are those notes imparted by the Pineau casks, including stone and dried fruits, honeysuckle, French oak, and honey. This is a must-buy.

Average price: $80 Rating: 93

Barrell Bourbon New Year 2024

Barrell Bourbon New Year 2024 is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

For this release, accomplished blender Barrell Bourbon took the courageous decision to marry bourbons (aged 5- to 15-years-old) from eight different states. It’s a risk that ultimately pays off — and triumphantly so — further enhancing the producer’s reputation as a master in the blending space. Check out our extended review for a dizzying array of tasting notes.

Average price: $85 Rating: 93

Booker’s Bourbon Mighty Fine Batch 2023-03

Booker's Bourbon Mighty Fine Batch 2023-03 is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

The third Booker’s release from 2023 is well deserving of its “Mighty Fine” name, though that’s a reference to one of Booker Noe’s signature phrases, rather than an indication of the brand’s take on its quality. Arriving at a typically punchy 63.3 percent ABV, it serves generous helpings of caramel, popcorn, peanut butter, and warming spice. Snap this one up while you still can — it’s one of the best Booker’s releases we’ve tasted in a long time.

Average price: $90 Rating: 93

Old Elk Cognac Cask Finish Bourbon

Old Elk Cognac Cask Finish Bourbon is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

The combination of Old Elk’s high-malt (34 percent) mash bill and a 10-month Cognac cask finish yields some unexpected but very welcome results here. This is not an overly bold bourbon, nor does it display the sweetness or obvious influence imparted by other finishing casks. Instead, the enjoyment lies in its subtlety: a perfumed bouquet that rewards multiple returns to the glass, and a lightly tannic texture that goes toe to toe with sweet flavors and results in a lengthy, toasty finish.

Average price: $90 Rating: 92

The Best Bourbons Over $100

Blue run spirits reflection ii.

Blue Run Spirits Reflection II is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

For this release, Blue Run’s whiskey director Shaylyn Gammon sought out barrels whose contents displayed prominent floral notes — a complete change of direction from Reflection I, which emphasized oak and sweetness. That’s not to say those characteristics aren’t present in this wonderful sipping bourbon, but it’s the bright floral fruitiness that sets it apart, and ultimately makes drinking this such an enjoyable experience.

Average price: $100 Rating: 93

Old Forester 1924 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Old Forester 1924 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

The newest edition to Old Forester’s Whiskey Row series was an early gift to kick off 2024, though eagle-eyed internet sleuths had been awaiting its arrival for some time. At 10 years old, the 50 percent ABV release is the oldest in the series by some margin, and it particularly excels on the nose. The palate is enjoyable and suffers no lack of flavors, but you have to search for them a little more than the bouquet suggests. Ultimately, it’s a successful debut and a promising sign of what’s to come.

Average price: $115 Rating: 92

Bardstown Bourbon Company Discovery Series #11

Bardstown Bourbon Company Discovery Series #11 is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

A blend of Kentucky straight bourbons, the 11th edition of Bardstown’s Discovery Series is notable for being the first to include the producer’s distillate. That whiskey makes up just 6 percent of the blend, and at 6 years old, it’s at least four years younger than the bourbon’s other two components. Its very inclusion marks a milestone for the series, though, and it certainly hasn’t compromised the quality of this consistently high-quality line. This is another release that makes us very excited to see what the future brings.

Average price: $140 Rating: 93

Heaven Hill Heritage Collection 18-Year-Old Bourbon

Heaven Hill Heritage Collection 18-Year-Old Bourbon is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

During an exclusive first taste of this annual spring release, Heaven Hill master distiller Conor O’Driscoll told VinePair that he selected the batch’s 133 barrels to showcase depth of age, while also trying to avoid overly oaked characteristics. At 18 years and 120 proof, that’s an ambitious aim, but O’Driscoll and team knocked it out of the park with a release that’s remarkably fresh, impeccably balanced, and jaw-droppingly complex.

Average price: $300 Rating: 97

Russell’s Reserve Single Rickhouse Camp Nelson F

Russell's Reserve Single Rickhouse Camp Nelson F is one of the best bourbons for 2024.

The second Russell’s Single Rickhouse release arrived in late 2023 and proved to be an upgrade on the series’ very well-received debut. Aged for a minimum of 10 years, and bottled at an unusually high 58.8 percent ABV for the brand, it’s a bold and complex bourbon that’s sure to equally delight fans of oak, fruit, and spice. The price point might prove too high for some budgets, but it may also deter over-inflation among retailers and on the secondary market, where it’s sure to be a fixture.

Average price: $300 Rating: 96

What’s the top-rated bourbon?

The top-rated bourbon is Heaven Hill Heritage Collection 18-Year-Old, a 2024 limited release that remains surprisingly fresh despite its age and never feels overly oaky or tannic.

What are the smoothest bourbons?

Wheated bourbons are typically considered to be the smoothest, most easy-drinking bourbons on the market. Some popular examples include Maker’s Mark and the ultimate unicorn, Pappy Van Winkle.

What is the holy grail of bourbon?

Many whiskey drinkers consider the Pappy Van Winkle line to be the holy grail of bourbon. In recent years, encountering a bottle for sale in retail stores has become all but impossible, and those that are available are generally offered with huge markups. Pappy gained notoriety and acclaim thanks in part to its wheated mash bill.

VinePair’s Tasting Methodology: How We Rate

Throughout the year, VinePair conducts numerous tastings for our popular Buy This Booze column and wine and spirits reviews. Our mission is to offer a clear, reliable source of information for drinkers, providing an overview applicable to day-to-day buying and drinking.

In alignment with our reviews mission, we believe in purposefully tasting all products as our readers typically would, with full knowledge of the producer, the region, and — importantly — the price. Tastings are therefore not typically conducted blind.

For Buy This Booze roundups, we usually include a maximum of one expression per brand, though we do allow multiple products from the same production facility (i.e., released under different labels).

For this bourbon whiskey roundup, we considered several different factors before finalizing the list. Our overall aim was to provide a complete overview of the myriad styles and expressions of America’s native spirit. Price points span from entry-level “approachable” bottles to ultra-premium releases. We are confident that every bottle that made this final ranking delivers on flavor, balance, depth, and complexity for each of their respective price points.

Bo Bichette ready to step up as Blue Jays leader ahead of 2024 season: 'We just need to be better'

The 26-year-old all-star is taking on more of a leadership role with the jays this season.

bichette-usatsi.png

Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette is now 26 and entering his fourth full season as one of the centerpieces of the team. It appears he's ready to take on more of a leadership role and that includes being publicly vocal. Bichette and Blue Jays manager John Schneider said as much in interviews with the Toronto Sun .

It started with Bichette speaking to his manager at the start of camp.

"He relayed that quietly in years past and this year really took a step forward and said 'we need to be better.' It's not just players. It's everybody," Schneider said.

"We always as coaches think that and when players come in and are delivering that message, it's awesome."

Bichette also made it clear in an interview with the Toronto Sun .

"That's the culture -- to show up every day and be ready to do whatever we can to win a game. And that culture is built over a period of time of people holding each other accountable to that standard and that culture. "That's what we're working on now." --- "It was lacking, but not in a bad way," Bichette said of how accountable Jays players were at times previously. "I'm saying that if we want to win a World Series, it has to be better. You can take that however you want to take that. "We've been decent. We made the playoffs. I don't think it's been bad. We just need to be better."

Schneider also fully backed Bichette in his interest in letting his teammates know his beliefs here.

In all, it sounds like Bichette is ready to be the leader of the team, vocally, both privately in the clubhouse and in the public eye via the media this coming season.

As a 25-year-old last season, Bichette made his second All-Star team and got down-ballot MVP support for his third straight year -- he's finished 12th, 11th and 16th, respectively. He hit .306/.339/.475 (123 OPS+) with 30 doubles, three triples, 20 homers, 73 RBI, 69 runs and 4.9 WAR in 135 games.

The Blue Jays, meanwhile, have sort of stagnated. In 2020, they were 32-28 and made the expanded playoffs as an eight seed. They won 91 games in 2021 and missed the playoffs by one game. They followed that up with 92 wins and a wild-card berth in 2022 and then 89 wins and another wild-card spot in 2023. They've gone 0-6 in playoff games in this span.

It could also be argued the Jays underachieved compared to their true talent level each of these last three seasons and it sounds like Bichette would be inclined to agree.

As for this season, the Blue Jays have the look of a team that can be in the mix for the AL East title or one of the three wild-card spots, though it's an awfully tough division. Perhaps Bichette's leadership can light a fire under some of his teammates and they can overachieve, or at least live up to their full potential.

IR-2024-53, Feb. 28, 2024

WASHINGTON — With millions of tax refunds going out each week, the Internal Revenue Service reminded taxpayers today that recent improvements to Where's My Refund? on IRS.gov provide more information and remains the best way to check the status of a refund.

The Where’s My Refund? tool provides taxpayers with three key pieces of information: IRS confirmation of receiving a federal tax return, approval of the tax refund and issuing date of the approved tax refund. Information for returns from tax years 2023, 2022 and 2021 is available.

During this busy part of filing season, millions of taxpayers are anticipating refunds. In the second of the weekly Tax Time Guide series, the IRS highlights important details about Where’s My Refund? that can help taxpayers quickly get the information they need without calling the IRS.

The improvements to the heavily used tool follow Inflation Reduction Act funding, which is providing for a variety of IRS technological advances and upgrades designed to help taxpayers and transform agency operations.

Where’s My Refund? enhancements

In filing season 2024, taxpayers will benefit from important updates that reduce the need for many taxpayers to call the IRS and include:

  • Messages with detailed refund status in plain language.
  • Seamless access on mobile devices and with the IRS2Go app.
  • Notifications indicating whether the IRS needs additional information.

How to use Where’s My Refund?

To use Where’s My Refund?, taxpayers must enter their Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification number, filing status and the exact whole dollar amount of their expected refund from the original tax return for the year they're checking.

Once the IRS acknowledges receipt of a return, refund status information is typically available within:

  • 24 hours after receipt of a taxpayer's e-filed tax year 2023 return.
  • Three to four days after receipt of an e-filed tax year 2022 or 2021 return.
  • Four weeks after mailing a paper return.

Taxpayers should note that the IRS updates the tool once a day, usually overnight, so there's no need to check more often. The IRS reminds taxpayers that the fastest way to get a refund is by filing electronically and using direct deposit .

Refund delivery

Many different factors may affect the timing of refund delivery:

  • The tax return has errors, requires additional review or is incomplete.
  • The return needs a correction to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit .
  • The time between the IRS issuing the refund and the bank posting it to an account may vary since processing times fluctuate.

The IRS will contact taxpayers by mail if more information is needed to process a return. IRS phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of a refund if:

  • 21 days or more have passed since a return was filed electronically.
  • Six weeks or more have passed since a return was mailed.
  • Where’s My Refund? tells the taxpayer to contact the IRS.

If a taxpayer refund isn't what is expected, it may be due to changes made by the IRS. These changes could include corrections to the Child Tax Credit or EITC amounts or an offset from all or part of the refund amount to pay past-due tax or debts. More information about reduced refunds is available on IRS.gov.

F iling season reminders

Taxpayers should make IRS.gov their first stop to get information on filing a tax return. There is information on Choosing a tax professional , IRS Free File , Answers to tax questions and Tips on filing a return .

Taxpayers who file electronically and choose direct deposit typically get their refund in less than 21 days. Taxpayers who don't have a bank account can find out how to open a bank account at a FDIC-insured bank or the National Credit Union Locator Tool .

Refund information for amended tax returns is not available on Where’s My Refund? Use Where’s My Amended Return?  to get the status of an amended return.

The deadline for most taxpayers to file a tax return, pay any tax due or request an extension to file is Monday, April 15.

This news release is part of a series called the Tax Time Guide , a resource designed to help taxpayers file an accurate tax return. Additional help is available in Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax (For Individuals) PDF .
