We saw this show in Beaumont, TX and it was really good. Aaron had Kevin Fowler with him and the only thing that could've made it better for this Panhandle Poor Girl is if they could've enticed Trent Willmon to perform with them for an Panhandle triple shot! The venue was perfect. Not crowded at all and not an overdone "showy" type of show. Down home, genuine feel and not over-hyped. Exactly what you'd expect from those 2 performers.

Although we enjoyed the concert as a whole we did get discouraged by the amount of talking Aaron did during his set. It was nice hearing from the artist and getting a personal experience but we really wanted to hear more music. He said he'd sing parts of some songs but those were the songs we wanted to hear in their entirety lol. We were totally confused when he said he didn't want to sing Getaway Truck.....why?? It's a great song! It was cute the way Aaron brought a small girl on stage for her birthday and played for her but again we really wanted more music.

Overall it was a fun night out for my daughter-in-law and myself and worth the 1.5 hr drive to Beaumont. They had played in Houston BUT it was outdoor, ground seating. It's toooooo hot for that + I'm disabled so ground seating was out. We'd definitely see Aaron again when he's back in the area & Kevin Fowler too. Jon Stack was the opener and he was a good singer; appropriate too as he's real country - not what they're passing off as country these days. We'd actually never heard of him. Turns out he has albums. Now we know lol.

Aaron Watson is a singer-songwriter who hails from Amarillo Texas and attended Abilene Christian University, where he start playing the guitar. He played a number of gigs around Texas before releasing his debut album entitled “A Texas Café”. In the last fifteen years he has released upwards of about ten studio albums, his most recent one that he is touring with, called “Real Good Time” made it to number 9 in the US Country Charts. He opens with the song “Barbed Wire Halo” which opens with a violin played as a fiddle playing an exert similar to the song “Amazing Grace”. He joins in on his Gibson Hummingbird guitar. It is almost as though this song samples the original song. The audience is singing along from the start to the finish with their hands high up in the air. One of the songs that goes down the best is a song called “July in Cheyenne” which has everyone in this place dancing and jumping around, whilst the Texan crooner provides a worthy soundtrack.

I had a good time Aaron Watson concert. I wasn't able to sit down there close to him to where I could see him real well I was sitting up in the balcony. But he did put on a good show. I was impressed. I've been following. Aaron Watson for almost 2 years I would have loved to have met him in person. I meet and greet but I wasn't able to. Are even sitting the VIP down on the floor area But all in all it was good. I would like to see me and sometimes to be able to meet him. And get a autograph for a shirt signed or something like that. Maybe someday I will.

Aaron Watson with Zane Williams as the opening act... Aaron Watson has been on my list of people to see live for years now... Me and a few friends drove about 3 hours to see him at Joe's live Rosemont. This hands down was the best concert I have ever been... and I have been to many concerts! I honestly cannot tell you who did a better job between the two of them. I was totally fan girling the whole night! Thanks Mr. Watson and Mr. Williams for an amazing night of music and entertainment! Anytime you all are in the area I'll be front and center! 10 out of 10!

Aaron Watson put on a great show. He really cares about his fans. He played for 2 & 1/2 hours straight. He was taking pictures with the fans and even took 3 little girls on stage to dance and play the fiddle. I'll definitely go see him again when he returns to El Paso TX.

Aaron Watson has been around for about 10 years now. I just heard of him about a month before the concert. This guy is really good and sings from the heart. Real country music not new country/rap. You'll be amazed at his music. I will see him again first chance I get.

Aaron Watson Wraps Eighth Annual International Tour With Impressive Headlines Set At The Long Road Festival (UK)

September 12, 2018 Press Release In the News 0

aaron watson uk tour

The US country star extended his Saturday night set to step in for Carrie Underwood, who cancelled performances due to illness

LONDON, UK – With current single “ Run Wild Horses ” in the 30s and climbing on the US country radio charts and making waves on the international scene with radio play on the UK’s 24/7 station Chris Country and across the BBC regional network,  Aaron Watson wrapped his eighth international tour  in the UK over the weekend, stepping in to upgrade an already planned set for ten thousand plus fans at the new The Long Road festival in Leicestershire, to a 90-minute Saturday night headline performance. In his 15+ year career as an independent artist Watson has played over 2,500 shows in the US and 20 plus overseas, with nearly half a million headline tickets sold in the last 18 months alone, so he was well positioned to step in at the last minute when Carrie Underwood had to cancel her appearance due to illness.

Fans were treated to a full band set made up of songs from Vaquero, No. 1 album The Underdog and further back in the Aaron Watson songbook, as well as a couple of carefully-selected covers from his various influences. UK music site, Your Life In A Song, described the performance as “ legendary… Every country festival needs a cowboy and they don’t come much bigger and better than Aaron Watson ,” while uDiscover Music said Watson “ seized the bill-topping opportunity, with songs from the true tradition of country that had fans…dancing into the night .”

With four highly successful headline shows across the country, this trip built on ongoing support from the UK media in recent years, with airplay from Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2 and interviews on numerous other BBC and commercial local radio stations, to discuss the tour, his love for UK fans and the August release of his new live album  Live At The World’s Biggest Rodeo Show  which benefits the Rebuild Texas Fund for victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Aaron Watson: The star from the Lonestar State tells us all about new music, his intense love for the UK and much more!

There haven’t been many bigger shocks to Music Row and its stranglehold over country music than Texan artist Aaron Watson hitting number one with his independently released album  The Underdog  in 2015. Following it up in 2017 was  Vaquero,  a record that hit number two and solidified his status as one of the most successful country artists around at the moment. With a new live album,  Live at the World’s Biggest Rodeo Show,  on the way in August and a trip to the UK for a full tour and a stop at The Long Road Festival, Aaron Watson is not slowing down! We managed to chat to him over the phone last month about his passion for the UK, new music and much much more!

aaron watson uk tour

It’s been crazy! Between the music and my family they keep me busy! No complaints though!

It keeps you on your toes having kids around! I’ve just had to lock two of them out of this room!

Oh yeah! It makes life worth living!

Vaquero dropped last year, how did you find the reaction to that record?

I felt that it had the best reaction to any album we’ve had yet. The album sold 30% or 40% more copies than even The Underdog did! It charted at number two but it was the top selling album that week. It just didn’t have the streaming single, now they do the chart a little bit different but it was our greatest album success to date. I think it was a very important release because a lot of people in the mainstream music industry, I think, thought that we were just a one-hit wonder with the success that we had with The Underdog. Album sales have declined 30% from the time we released The Underdog but I think our album sales increased by 30%. It was just so much fun! Getting the write the songs, I just really enjoyed putting out Vaquero, I’m working on another album right now and I think that I’m beginning to come into my own as a songwriter. It’s exciting, you know? We’ve worked really hard to get to this point and we’re just loving it. For us, it’s all about the fans. I feel like the UK has been a really big deal for us. A lot of artists don’t want to make their way over, for me, I always felt that it was really important to take the time to tour in Europe and the UK especially. The fans over there are so into the melodies, the music, the lyrics, the passion for a song in the UK is unmatched.

That’s what I was going to ask you, I know that you do a lot of stuff in Texas and across the USA but you really seem to have made a beeline for the UK. Do you think that connection with the fans is what really makes it work over here? Do you think it makes a big difference that you are the songwriter?

Yeah, I think it makes a big difference. I’m a music lover, I took my family to see Paul McCartney last summer and to hear Sir Paul get up there and tell the story behind the song. It’s so intimate and personal and real. I don’t get anything out of seeing some singer get up there and just sing some song that somebody else wrote, it just doesn’t do anything for me. I think that without the support of the UK we wouldn’t chart albums number one. I think that the UK has been such an incredibly ally of ours and I love coming over. I love the culture, the people, it was probably three or four generations ago that my family was living there! The old Watson’s!

It is very much an English or Irish name…

Yeah, one side of my family is from England and my mothers side is Pennington, so Irish. That’s probably the reason why I feel at home.

It does feel that way during your shows over here, it must be difficult being an artist from Texas and travelling thousands and thousands of miles to play music? You must wonder if it’ll resonate with crowds and it must be a fantastic feeling when it does?

Oh it is. I will always always always come to the UK. It’s as important to me as us doing our west coast runs up through California, Oregon and Washington here in the States. What I really enjoy is that, right now things are crazy, my kids are at an age where they’re very busy with sports and school but just think, some day, when my kids are grown, how fun will it be for me to bring my whole family with me to the UK and let them experience the beautiful country?!

That’d be some family holiday!

Absolutely! I have big plans for doing that! My little girl has already told me that she wants to go to London and she wants me to take her to Paris, she’s eight years old and I’m like “oh goodness! That girl!”

I’ve got an eight year old and six year old, both girls…

You know exactly how they are then! They want it all and they want it now, much like their mothers!

Very true! Another interesting thing about your upcoming UK tour is that you’ll be playing your first festival over here, that’ll be a bit different and probably a good chance to play in front of some fans that might not have seen you yet?

Yeah, festivals are great because it gives me an opportunity to share my music with a larger crowd, it’s like planting seeds. We plant seeds and the next time we come back to the UK, those people who we saw at those festivals will come to see me at my other shows. We just love it. I’m so looking forward to it. Coming to the UK is one of those things that, when we get it on the books, I really really really look forward to it. It’s such a treat! We’re just so thankful that you guys embrace us. You know what I think helps too? I think the fact that my last name is Watson and so many people assume that I’m related to Dale Watson! Dale has such a strong fanbase over there so I think that I need to send Dale a thank you card to thank him for sharing some of his fans with me!

One thing I always like to ask is whether you have a particular favourite thing to do when you’re in the UK? Whether it’s eating fish and chips, pie and mash or whatever?

I do love the fish and chips! I love the different types of eggs! Y’all love eggs and I love eggs! We have chickens at the house so I have fresh eggs every morning from my chickens. I just love all the different flairs, the cars, the buses. I love the way that things have changed with technology yet there’s still that old country feeling. On the east coast here in America we do have some, what we consider, old neighbourhoods, that’s like a new neighbourhood to y’all! Everything has such a long long history that goes back forever and I love the history! It’s just such a unique experience for us and I’m really open to the entire thing. For me, it’s like a kid going to Disneyland!

It’s great to hear your passion! Switching back to the music, we talked about the album hitting number two but having such amazing sales, do you think it’s great to see that sustained chart success? You didn’t just get a couple of people who liked a tune on The Underdog and bought it, but you created so many more fans. It must be a real positive from Vaquero?

It absolutely is. I’ve said this a million times but my children love the music and watching that develop over the last three or four years has got me refocused on who I am and why I make music. Let’s talk about this, let’s talk about the fact that my oldest boy Jake is 12, he’s been playing the guitar for about four years now and I come home one day and he’s got my Telecaster plugged in to my Fender Blues Deluxe and he’s playing Helter Skelter by The Beatles! I’m just going “yeah!” The thing about it is, when I’m listening to The Beatles, those albums are great from start to finish. There’s different moods and flavours. A lot of times country music wants to put me in this box, like this is how you’re supposed to sound, but I’m not going to be put in that box. I’m just going to make music that comes from my heart, I’m going to make my music and I think that the fans can feel what’s real.

You mentioned that there’s new music in the pipeline, do we have any idea when we might start hearing some of that?

Yeah. We’re going to put out a live album in August, it’s twelve tracks of songs that people have heard plus one new one on there, we’re going to put that out for fun! Then, my entire family, we’re working on a Christmas record that will come out end of October! It’s called An Aaron Watson Family Christmas , my wife is singing with me, my kids are singing with me, we’re having so much fun making this album! I go back in the studio in September to make a new country album and I’ve already written a whole album. This one… this is the one! It’s the one! I feel like I’m finally maturing as a songwriter!

I’m sure that your fans will be thrilled to hear there’s so much in the pipeline! I bet it feels weird recording a Christmas album now, in the middle of a Texas summer?!

It is so weird! I’ve got this one song that I’m writing and it’s called Lonely Lonestar Christmas, it kind of has a Sinatra feel to it. I was working on it the other day at the house, then I went outside and it’s 102 degrees! I’m like “wow, it’s definitely not Christmas time!” It is weird!

I feel like you should have a room in the house with the air-con on, put a tree up and just make that room Christmas!

That is brilliant! I sing a lot in my wife’s closet because, with all the close hanging, it makes for a really good sound for recording vocals. All those clothes take away the echo. You know what I’m gonna do? I hadn’t even thought about that, I’m gonna put a Christmas tree up in that closet and hang some lights up. When we go into there to sing it’ll feel like Christmas! Thank you for that, that’s brilliant! You’re getting all the credit for that buddy!

That’ll help when Mrs Watson comes home to find a tree in her closet, just blame it on the guy who is thousands of miles away!

Yeah! I’ll blame it on you! You and I can have this partnership, when my wife gets mad at me in Texas I’ll blame it on you and when your wife gets mad at you in the UK, you can blame it on me back in Texas!

Sounds like a deal! Although next time I see you, I may have my pregnant partner with me and we don’t want to mess with her!

No! She’s the boss!

Well, we can’t wait to have you back over here, it’s always a delight chatting to you and watching you play live! We’ll catch up in September!

Absolutely! Blessings to you, your wife, your two kids and the one that’s on the way!

Aaron Watson heads to the UK in September. You can buy your tickets here!

In February 2015, Texas artist, Aaron Watson became the first male artist to release his album independently and debut at #1 on the country Billboard charts. ‘The Underdog’ sold over 26,000 copies in its first week surpassing some of Nashville’s biggest artists. After multiple trips to tour in Europe he finally took the leap of faith to set foot in the UK for a few shows. I got the chance to catch up with him before the shows began and have a little chat about his career so far and what you, the fans, can expect to see.

Amy: Good morning! How was your trip over?

Aaron: It was good!

Amy: Have you flown in from Texas?

Aaron: I flew in from the Boston so we left right before the big storm hit, so yes we kind of got lucky! I have never played in the UK… Well we’ve flown into the UK.

Amy: I see, so have you done press here before or has it just been a stop?

Aaron: I have done press here before but that’s been over the phone and we’ve flown into London heading to other places. We actually flew in 3 days ago and played a festival in Toulon, France and then we flew back. We played that and it was a great turnout and now we’re here!

Amy: And the weather is actually nice for you too!

Aaron: It’s nice that it’s very warm I’ve enjoyed that. Better than Boston; Boston was cold!

Amy: I can imagine right now! So, your latest album ‘The Underdog’ was released beginning of last year? It debuted at #1 and you released that independently, how did that feel?

Aaron: It was an awesome experience. You know, at the time that the record went #1 I didn’t realise that I was the first independent male artist to achieve a number one record but it was just, it was, it was just a neat experience because this is what I have been doing for a long time. Throughout my career I’ve had opportunities where I could have signed a record deal and played that game but we’ve always stayed independent because that allows us to stay true to the music, you know, I always tell people that my number one priority is staying true to my faith, my family and my fans and I always felt that signing a record deal would compromise that. So to be able to have that kind of success on your own is just that feeling someone can give you something that you didn’t earn and maybe you’d be appreciative but that feeling doesn’t feel anything like when you’ve worked hard and it’s finally all starting to payoff. So I was excited for my fans because they supported me for a long time. So I was excited for the fans and as a father it felt good because music is the family business so job security is helping me take care of my family.

Amy: So I wanted to ask you about your song ‘ Fencepost’ there is a lot of different versions of country music happening in Nashville at the moment but then CMA awards last year Chris Stapleton cleaned up on awards and you’ve got Texas artists like Kacey Musgraves doing incredibly well. Do you feel like maybe things are changing in Nashville?

Aaron: I don’t, I think it’s still the same. I think what Kacey’s done and what Chris has done has been really awesome but I don’t hear Kacey that much on the radio back home, not like we should, and her records are fabulous, I don’t know why they don’t play her on the radio. To me it makes sense, I mean she’s a pretty girl, she sings wonderfully, she writes incredible songs, I mean, I think all of the tools are there I just don’t understand why it doesn’t happen. Stapleton, I’ve been a fan of his song writing for a long time. He is just an incredible talent. I think it’s great that he one of these awards but again he won all those awards, he is out selling everyone but I’m not hearing him on the radio. I don’t understand why radio and Nashville aren’t getting on the same page. You always have to look at things outside the box; maybe radio, maybe playing this pop bro-country stuff is making them more money. At the end of the day everyone is in it to make money. For me you know I’m very good spot where I can make a good living for my family but still stay true to myself and I can’t think of anything more miserable than if I were to have to get up on stage and sing songs that I don’t believe in. I just wouldn’t do.

Amy: I understand that I am a musician as well and I wouldn’t want to do that either!

Aaron: So you know the feeling. There is always going to be those more pop artists that basically will sing anything to get on the radio. There’s always gonna be those people and you know, to each his own. I try to always think that, you know, those guys are trying to make a living for their family just like me and its better that they sing those songs than myself!

Amy: So you said you haven’t been here before so what is it that prompted this trip?

Aaron: We have been talking about it for a long time. We started coming over to Europe six years ago. I think this is our fifth trip to Europe and I just felt that Europe needs to be on schedule a regular basis. I mean there’s a lot of people in Europe love country music, maybe have a greater amount of love and appreciation for country music and even some of the people over the states. It’s very intense and that’s why I was that we need to be here. These are our kind of people and am in really mean to be honest with you it’s not that far we will act like it’s so far.

Amy: Right, you flew from Boston, that’s what? 7 hours?

Aaron: I think it was about 6 and a half! I mean I ride on a bus from Texas to California. That’s far! I can fly from Texas to London quicker than we can drive from the bottom of Texas to the top of Texas. We just love it over here, we like the culture, I like meeting people. It’s just a neat experience. A lot of people dream their whole life at getting to travel world and I have a wonderful opportunity to just share my music and to be a positive influence on our crowds and I just want to spread that anywhere we can go. Playing the guitar is fun!

Amy: And although country music is getting more popular over here, we have the C2C Festival now, it is still lacking which means whenever anyone is over here everyone rallies together. Even if someone had never heard your name, they would see it’s a country gig and they would buy tickets anyway.

Aaron: I love the attitude to country music over here and after shows, when we play in Europe, there’s those fans that come to me and they want to discuss the actual song, like what makes that song… I have a guy tell me, oh I love this song how the fiddle takes the first part of the solo in the steel guitar takes the back half of the solo then right at the end they join up together and play a twin part. A fan told me that! I was like, awesome! I think a lot of these fans, they dig a little deeper into the music and I like that. We have a lot of those in the states to but it’s just really refreshing to come over here and to really a different world mean everything is so different but its fun. Good people are good people wherever you go.

Amy: Your tour kicks off tomorrow night in Manchester at the Ruby Lounge and then you have the Borderline in London too – probably one of my favourites!

Aaron: Oh cool. It was important that we had rooms where I would rather have 300 people packed in where they can really experience our music than play some giant room and have 1000 scattered out. We really want to have that because we weren’t able to bring over… We have a wonderful stage, all kinds of guitars, all kinds of lights but we could bring here so you know so was one of those things we kind of just brought the bare essentials. One thing we did bring is the music! The most refreshing part of this year’s play 15+ years, well 16 years, I’ve played for 16 years, put out 12 albums, played probably 2500 shows and I feel like I’m just getting started. I’m really coming into my own as a songwriter and singer, my voice is maturing, I’m becoming a better performer and that’s exciting to be this far in my career and feel like I am just getting started! I’ve already started working on another record and its nerve wracking and its exciting all at the same time. I can’t stop thinking about my new songs. A lot of things motivate me. I’m motivated to make a better record than The Underdog. I’m also motivated to make a living for my family. To provide for my two little boys and my little girl. I also tell people that my wife’s credit card bill motivates me every month! I’m just a motivated give the fans a better product, to make the best record that can make, and just to be the best that I can be. That’s exciting and am so excited about the future.

Amy: That is so refreshing to hear, I think, that’s the attitude all musicians should take.

Aaron: Yeh, I’m not here to win awards. Actually I don’t want to win awards. I just want to do what I love. My reward is taking care of family. My reward is having fans come up to me after a show and tell me that my music brings them joy. That’s my award. I tell people that I don’t even have room on my walls at home for, you know, plaques and trophies, the walls of my house are already covered up photographs of my children. I don’t have time or room for that sort of stuff. I don’t want to be famous. Back home in I can’t go anywhere without taking pictures.

Amy: It seems like the bulk of your shows are back in Texas?

Aaron: Well not the last two years. We played 37 states last year so we play… I mean I took my children to Disney World and I get stopped several times in Florida to take pictures at Disney World but I don’t consider that fame. To me that’s not fame. That’s just me taking pictures with my loyal customers so for me it’s not fame; that’s just part of my job. If people are buying tickets to shows and are buying my records, supporting my family, I can stop for a minute to take a picture. That’s the least I can do for them. So those things don’t bother me at all, I do it because I love music. I do it because music isn’t an industry to me it’s the family business.

Amy: So were your parent’s musical too?

Aaron: Well my dad is a veteran and my mom’s a schoolteacher but music has always been part of our family. My dad raised me on Willie, Waylon, Merle Haggard, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones.

Amy: All the good stuff!

Aaron: All the good stuff! Mom was always encouraging me to sing at church and those two things together kind of moulded me into who I am today.

Amy: You also have a show coming up in Italy? A festival?

Aaron: Yes mam.

Amy: You said you have travelled to Europe, have you played this before or will this be a new one for you?

Aaron: Actually I think this is a fifth time in Italy. We’ve been playing there for a little while now so we have a really strong fan base over in Italy and France. That’s why I am so excited now that we have the UK on board because now we can really come over here and really get a lot of good work done. It’s just so fun!

Amy: Well actually I play in a Johnny Cash cover band and our new guitarist is from Milan, Italy. Until then I wasn’t aware that Italy had such a big music scene for this sort of genre.

Aaron: That’s fantastic! Actually the first song on my record is called ‘The Prayer’ and it’s about Johnny. Johnny Cash has a book he wrote, called The Man In White and I read it, I love it. I love Johnny Cash, who doesn’t? You HAVE to love Johnny Cash!

Amy: How can you not!? Everyone is born into loving Johnny Cash! If they say otherwise… they are lying!

Aaron: Right! Liars!

Amy: In terms of the show you are playing in the UK, what can the fans expect from them?

Aaron: Lots of energy, lots of fun! My music is who I am, I mean these are songs I write, on my back porch, back home in Texas, I mean, it’s the real deal it’s authentic… This is Cowboy music. This isn’t city boys writing songs up in some office in Nashville, Tennessee. This is a country boy writing songs at his ranch in Buffalo Gap, Texas and writing how I feel. The band is incredible; I tell people they’re untouchable. We’ve been together for forever so they think the same and they are not just great musicians but they are great guys. It’s so important, you can’t just be a great musician; you also have to be a great person. I have been around great musicians that treated me poorly and then I didn’t like them anymore. It’s a team effort. If you want to win you have to have a team. We are gonna have a ton of fun and I’m so excited. We’re gonna give it 110% and then after the show I hang out until the last person is through with me and I have done that for 16 years. That’s part of my job, that’s part of the show. The show is just half of it, hanging out, hugs, handshakes, pictures, selfies[!], that is all package deal. I want to give everyone who bothered to buy ticket to drive home and think – that was money well spent.

Amy: Lastly for anyone reading this interview is there anything you would like to say to them?

Aaron: Well we’re pretty active on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram so you can follow me on all that stuff but really we just were very thankful and appreciative of the support that we get. This is what we do, this is what I’ll do as long as God lets me. It’s one of those things that, you know, God has blessed us with so many wonderful fans and to have the support of a fan is such an honour and we really respect that and we don’t take them for granted. When you have played for a long, long time to nobody you really appreciate it when there is somebody. We’re just excited to be in the UK!
