Viking Jupiter: Western Mediterranean Cruise Review

November 9, 2023

My mom and I just got back from a fabulous European cruise with Viking and had the BEST time! It was my first cruise and I had no idea what to expect. Today I thought I’d detail everything we did on our Viking Cruise from how to get there, what the ship was like, excursions, and more!

Getting There

We flew from Nashville to Philadelphia on American Airlines and Philadelphia to Rome on British Airways. It was about an 8-hour flight overnight into Rome. We arrived around 9 am and after collecting our luggage we put on a red Viking sticker that was mailed to us beforehand so they would spot us as we exited baggage claim.

Once we saw the Viking team, they took our luggage and led us to a bus that took us an hour and a half to the port, Civitavecchia. I’ll tell you, after not sleeping well on the plane and being a little out of it, it was nice to have transportation already taken care of!

Once you arrive at the port, you check in with your passport and get your ship card. That’s a card you keep with you the entire time and scan to get on and off the ship. Walk through a metal detector, go up the stairs and you’re in! We sailed on the Viking Jupiter for their Iconic Western Mediterranean Cruise from Rome to Barcelona.

viking jupiter cruise reviews

This eight-day cruise features France’s famed southern coast and Italy’s Renaissance treasures. On the journey, you Immerse yourself in Catalonian and Tuscan art, architecture, and history during overnights in Barcelona and Tuscany. In the South of France, call on historic Montpellier and picturesque Marseille, and visit Monte Carlo, Monaco’s glamorous city by the sea. I’m excited to detail our trip and give some other details about our Viking journey.

Viking Jupiter: Iconic Western Mediterranean Cruise Review

Our room wasn’t ready when we arrived so we went to a demonstration that showed how to put on your life jacket and where to go in case of an emergency. We also had lunch in the World Cafe and were able to get some coffee to perk up a little bit. Once our room was ready, our ship key let us in and our bags were already in the room. Once we got settled and showered we took a nap and relaxed.

Normally if you want to see Rome you would fly into town a day or two early as an extension and see the city that way. Unfortunately, we couldn’t sail our first night due to a storm so we stayed in port and got to do Rome the next day.

We hit up the Restaurant for dinner. On Viking, food is covered for all three meals as well as coffee, wine, beer, soda, and water. The house wine is covered but if you want a cocktail or another wine other than the house red or white it’ll charge to your room.

The first night’s sleep was hard since I woke up wide awake at 2 a.m. due to jet lag. But we had room service deliver our breakfast and a pot of coffee and I was ready for our excursion for the day, Rome on Your Own.

Each morning for the excursions, you get a newsletter delivered to your room called the Viking Daily. It tells you the time and place to meet that morning for your excursion. You also have headsets in your room and you’ll bring your headset with you on your excursions. The guide uses them to talk to you and give out information. When you arrive in the designated area they tell you which bus you’ll be on and then call everyone in the group to leave the ship and head to their bus.

From the port to Rome, it was an hour and a half to get there. On the way into the city, the tour bus guide gives you a map with emergency numbers, where the meeting place is, and places they recommend visiting. The bus dropped us off in front of the Vatican and we had six hours to ourselves to explore and see what we wanted to see.

We did some window shopping at notable Italian Fashion Houses like Gucci, Prada, Missoni, and Fendi. We also saw the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and Pantheon.

A Roman Holiday in 3 Days | Greta Hollar

Once your time is up, you meet up with your group at the Vatican and drive the 90 minutes back to the ship. We had dinner in the Restaurant and the ship left the port for Florence. The water was choppy and it stormed throughout the night but I took Dramamine and wore seasickness bands and slept better than the night before!

The next morning we were in Florence, well technically Livorno the port. We caught an early bus and drove two hours to Florence. Today our tour guide’s name was John and he was such a gem. He shared history and different facts as we drove into Florence and had the map marked with his favorite places to eat, shop, and see. Ask for him if you do Florence on your own tour!

Once we got to Florence, our meeting point was Santa Croce and with that, we were on our own. We saw the Duomo, the fountain of Neptune, Piazze Della Repubblica, and Ponte Vecchio.

Viking Jupiter: Western Mediterranean Cruise Review | Greta Hollar

We hit up some of my favorite spots on my previous trip to Florence like Gustapizza , Move On for records, Street Doing Vintage Couture for vintage designer pieces, and La Prosciutteria for wine and charcuterie boards. Florence is such a small city, you can do a lot in one day! Just know if you’re heading into any cathedrals or places of worship, your shoulders and knees should be covered.

We only had about five hours in Florence before we had to make the two-hour drive back to Livorno to get back on the boat before it left port. We got back just in time for sunset and got to wander around the top deck of the boat to see the indoor pool, and a sports deck with shuffleboard, ping pong, and bocce ball. The sunset from the top deck is incredible! The Viking Jupiter also has an indoor pool for use.

We were tired from our day in Florence so we ordered room service and watched movies. The water was much calmer this night and we slept so much better!

Monaco & Monte Carlo

On day 3 of the cruise, we woke up in Monaco and Monte Carlo. The South of France is such a beautiful country. One day is all you really need in Monaco. We did a walking tour that day and our guide, Michele, knew everything this is about the royal family and the history of the Montagues people.

It was such a beautiful day and we learned that May is the rainy season. It only rains a month a year and the rest of the year is clear. We were here on a Sunday which is the perfect time to come. There were lots of boats on the water and the streets and the market were clear with the exception of tourists. Our excursion was only three hours that day and we got right off the boat to begin our tour. There were lots of other excursions around Monte Carlo and Monaco on this day but we booked too late and they were full already.

I’m a huge fan of Grace Kelly so it was so interesting to learn more about her as Princess of Monaco and the royal family and their history with the country.

viking jupiter cruise reviews

The next day we woke up in Marseille. We had the morning to ourselves to read on the deck and enjoy a leisurely brunch. Today’s excursion was Scenic Marseille. Three-hour bus tour with stops along the way. This was an included excursion with Viking and the only one available since the other ones booked up quickly. To be honest, I didn’t love Marseille, it was crowded and super touristy and just not as quaint and charming as the other places we have visited so far. We talked to other people who did the excursion into the mountains and loved it.

viking jupiter cruise reviews

Another storm was coming in so we couldn’t make it to Montpellier. So our option was to do a half day in Marseille the next day. We decided we had enough of Marseille and took the day to explore the Viking Jupiter Cruise ship. We walked the jogging deck, lay by the pool, got in the sauna, and enjoyed a facial at the Nordic spa. In the afternoon we left for our final stop, Barcelona!

When we docked in Barcelona, we were one of the first groups off the boat. We did the 8:30 am Iconic Barcelona tour. This was a four-hour tour that was a mix of seeing stops on the bus, walking a short distance to a place, and then having a small amount of free time. We stopped at La Sagrada Familia and the cathedral in the Gothic Quarter. I saw these spots when I was in Barcelona earlier this year but it was nice showing them to my mom.

What to Do in Barcelona for 3 Days | Greta Hollar

Once our tour was over, we hopped on a complimentary shuttle and headed to Casa Batlló . We did the audio tour of the house and then got some tapas and cava at a local restaurant. The night before you leave, you leave your luggage outside your door and the crew will pick it up and have it ready for you on your bus the next morning.

When you leave the Viking Jupiter, you have to be off the ship by 6:30. We had a color and a number and the ship calls you off, loads you onto a shuttle, and takes you to the airport. They bring your bags in where you collect your bag and check into your flight.

Yes! Every meal has vegetarian options. You can also let them know 90 days before departure so they can accommodate you.

Self-service launderettes including irons and ironing boards are located on Decks 3–6 and are free of charge, with detergent available for your use at no additional fee.

No pets or other animals are allowed on board the ship, other than service animals and certified therapy dogs. But if you do you have to fill out a form and let Viking know before your final payment is due.

On the Jupiter ship, you’ll find a fitness center, hair salon, living room area with puzzles and scrabble, shops, a theatre, an indoor pool, an outdoor infinity pool, and a spa. If you like night activities, on board you’ll find various evening activities like trivia, dancing, or a movie in the theatre.  There are also a ton of places you can get food and drinks, you’ll find them listed below! But keep in mind, it’s nice to dress up at night. A lot of the restaurants don’t allow you to wear jeans or shorts.

Restaurants

  • Manfredi’s® Italian Restaurant (reservation)
  • The Chef’s Table (reservation)
  • The Kitchen Table (reservation)
  • The Restaurant – go for dinner
  • The Wintergarden – they serve high tea!
  • Explorers’ Lounge
  • Room service

If you’re a person who likes having your itineraries all planned out and a lot of the stress of trip planning done by someone else. Viking Ocean Cruises is a great option. It’s also great to have your bags stay in one place and see multiple countries at the same time! If you’re interested in other Viking Cruises, check out their other cruise ships  (like the Viking Mars or Viking Neptune) for more information .

Viking Jupiter Itineraries

Viking jupiter review, review of viking jupiter.

The 2019-built MS Viking Jupiter cruise ship is the 6th in a 10-unit series of identical vessels built for Viking Ocean Cruises . Viking OCEAN's current plans are for a fleet of 16 sisterships, all of which are Fincantieri -built and Norway-flagged.

The vessel (IMO number 257058920) is currently Norway- flagged (MMSI 257058920) and registered in Bergen .

History - construction and ownership

The 930-passenger ship Viking Jupiter offers destination-oriented cruising experience, with few at-sea days, long in-ports days and more exciting overnights in key spots. Onboard amenities include complimentary Wi-Fi, free shore excursions, wine and beer with no charge at dinner and lunch.

Viking Jupiter cruise ship (VIKING OCEAN)

Each of the Viking Ocean ships offers many ticket price-inclusive / complimentary amenities and services, such as all shore excursions, transfers, Wi-Fi, wine and beer (at lunches and dinners), access to Nordic Spa (steam room, thalassotherapy pool, hot tub, snow room / grotto, sauna, cold plunge pool). The infinity pool (resistance swimming pool located aft on Deck 7 / at the ship's stern) is another unique and complimentary facility.

All Viking Ocean liners were built according to the latest maritime navigation regulations and equipped with latest marine safety systems, including "safe return to port". The ships also implement some of the maritime industry's latest technologies, including energy-saving hybrid engines (diesel generators and gas turbines), optimized hulls and bulbous bows for max fuel efficiency. Ship design also features the common for Viking River Cruises longships solar panels (installed on the Magradome pool cover) additionally minimizing the vessel's exhaust pollution.

Decks and Cabins

Viking Jupiter staterooms (465 total) include 47x Suites, 32x Penthouses and 386x Veranda/Balcony cabins in 18 grades.

All passenger cabins are balconied and offer all the industry's modern amenities and services, including King-size beds ("Viking Explorer", deluxe mattresses and linens, Cashmere blankets), en suite bathroom (heated floor, heated mirror, glass-door shower, hairdryer, premium bath products and toiletries /by Freyja, bathrobes, slippers, towel warmers), seating area (sofa, coffee table, vanity desk with chair, wardrobe, full-length mirror with mini lights), satellite phone, smart HDTV (3D, Infotainment / interactive TV system for Internet access, room service ordering, movies-on-demand, live webcams views, Viking Cruises channel for news, enrichment lectures and port talks), in-room binoculars, electronic safe box, individual air-conditioning, coffee machine, mini-bar (replenished daily with bottled water, soft drinks, snacks).

Viking Ocean cruise ship (aerial)

Viking OCEAN's Jupiter ship has as signature facilities two swimming pools (Main Pool and Aft Infinity Pool), a covered pool deck (with Jacuzzi, Bar & Grill), Viking Living Room (Atrium Lobby Lounge), two Cinemas, a modern wellness complex (Spa & Fitness Center, Beauty Salon), Wintergarden (poolside area), Aquavit Terrace (aft outdoor bar lounge with Infinity Pool and Hot Tub), Piano Bar Lounge (Torshavn), dedicated sports deck (deck 9/with a Walking Track and Outdoor Gym/Yoga area), Theatre Lounge & Bar, Lobby Bar, various shops and brand boutiques, The Dome (planetarium with portable telescope).

The walk-around Lanai/Promenade Deck fully encircles the boat (deck 2). The two-deck Explorer's Lounge has a huge bow-facing observation area which is a unique feature that lots of modern cruise vessels lack. Many of the ship's features reflect a boutique hotel feel.

All Viking Ocean ships have an onboard "snow room". Viking's "Snow Grotto" is a spa retreat with powdery snow falling down from the ceiling. The experience (touted beneficial to the body's blood circulation) includes heating in a sauna (steam bath), then walking into this small room fitted with benches and with dark stone walls illuminated by blue light. The snow on the floor is kept at sub-freezing temperatures. This Arctic-themed facility is part of the ship's thermal suite (within the spa complex). This relaxation area has also 1 hot tub, sauna room, heated ceramic loungers, therapeutic showers, salt-water thermal pool. Snow Grotto access is complimentary to all passengers.

The Dome planetarium

MS Viking Jupiter is the world's 3rd ship (after Cunard 's liner RMS Queen Mary 2 and Viking Orion ) with an onboard planetarium. Named "Explorers' Dome", this theatre-like venue is circular, with capacity 26 seats and located forward on Deck 8, facing Explorers Lounge. It uses the latest video projecting technology to show constellations and other space-related 3D videos on its domed roof.

  • Resolution quality is 7K HD. Dome's equipment includes 5x laser-beam projectors and studio-quality speakers with 2D and 3D sound options.
  • Signature shows offered here is "Journey to Space" (space travel history-themed) and "Under the Arctic Sky" (northern lights-themed). The Dome and its programming are complimentary. 3D glasses are provided, also complimentary.
  • The ship's resident astronomer (in addition to its resident historian) leads 2 lectures per cruise, themed on current sky events and also on themes determined by passengers preference.
  • In 2018, Viking Cruises partnered with the US-based company "Evans and Sutherland" - developer of advanced computer graphics for digital planetariums and cinemas, and distributor of the world's largest database (library) of full-dome shows. The company also provides access to live feeds, including from the International Space Station and current space missions.

The cruise liner also has a portable telescope (electronically stabilized) that provides live night sky views projected at The Dome. The telescope is generally fixed, located on either side (forward) on Deck 9. Ship's astronomer organizes there outdoor stargazing sessions.

Viking Jupiter Wiki

The vessel (Fincantieri Ancona yard/hull number 6254) has volume 47861 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 4815 tons, max draught 6,3 m. The powerplant is based on MAN marine diesel engines (model 12V32/9L32/44) with combined output 23,52 MW (22000 hp). The registered shipowner is COMPASS SHIPPING 36 CORP LTD, while the registered manager is VIKING OCEAN CRUISES LTD.

Viking OCEAN offers destination-rich itineraries featured with the line's new "small ship cruise" tour and onboard experience. Compared to similar class ships operated by other lines, Viking Ocean itineraries feature fewer sea days and longer port days, with much overnight port stays.

Among the vessel's innovative marine technologies are its energy-saving hybrid engines, top-deck solar panels, pollution-minimizing exhaust system. This ship also uses seawater as a lubricant for its propeller shaft bearings. This technology lowers the vessel's maintenance costs and also the risk of pollution. Replacing the biodegradable oils, the water is being directly discharged into the ocean.

All passenger cabins are with a private veranda, and about 1/5th larger than average standard staterooms on the ocean cruising market. An interesting feature is the ship's dining room. This venue could be transformed into an outdoor casual dining place thanks to its floor-ceiling sliding windows.

Viking Cruises deals (on all river and ocean liners) are inclusive of shore excursions (land tours), onboard entertainment and dining (including at speciality restaurants), drinks and alcohol (beer, wine /at lunch and dinner), 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi.

Viking OCEAN ships deliver a brand new-style vacation cruising experience. These vessels represent a "smaller ship" concept. The relatively shallow draft (21 ft / 6,3 m), design (hull and superstructure) and technology allow the ship to directly access even small ports. The ship's smaller size also guarantees an easy and faster passenger embarkation/debarkation process. Another unique feature for the "affordable luxury" ocean cruising market is that regardless of cabin categories, all Viking Ocean deals are price-inclusive of the shore excursions in all ports in the cruise ship itinerary.

For Viking OCEAN ships' interiors were contracted SMC Design ( London -based interior design company) and Rottet Studios (LA-based hotel design company).

In April 2018, Fincantieri contracted the Norwegian marine company Scanship to supply all the liner's cleaning systems - food waste processing, waste incineration, garbage handling, wastewater treatment plants. Scanship's wastewater purification system treats both greywater (sullage/sinks, showers, baths) and blackwater (toilets).

In February 2019, Fincantieri contracted the Canadian company Thordon Bearings Inc to provide newbuild's bearings for the propeller shaft. Ship's propeller shaft system (Thordon COMPAC) is seawater-lubricated and based on 100% grease-oil free bearings. The innovative propeller shaft system will be also installed on all the following Viking Ocean liners ( currently on order or under construction ) with scheduled deliveries between 2021-2027. These systems are supplied and installed by Pedrotec (Thordon's authorized distributor in Italy).

The ship was launched/floated out from drydock on May 10, 2018, at Fincantieri's shipyard in Ancona Italy . The ceremony was led by Godmother Sissel Kyrkjebo (Norwegian soprano singer) and attended by Torstein Hagen (Viking Cruises President) and Giovanni Stecconi (shipyard's Director).

Jupiter was officially delivered to Viking OCEAN on February 7, 2019, as the fleet's 6th vessel. The official christening ceremony was initially scheduled for June 6 (2019) to be held in Oslo Norway . However, the official naming ceremony was held on January 15, 2020, in Beverly Hills CA. This was quite an unusual ceremony as the vessel has been in service for ~1 year. Also, while official ship namings are usually held on the boat or pier-side (where it is berthed), Viking Jupiter's christening was far away from water - at Beverly Hills Ballroom (West Hollywood Civic Center) while the boat itself was cruising in the South Atlantic Ocean, en-route from Puerto Madryn (Argentina) to Port Stanley (East Falkland Island) . The land-based event was synchronized with the ship  (via real-time satellite link / live streaming). The Godmother (Sissel Kyrkjebo) used a Viking axe to cut a cord, then the ship's Captain confirmed that the bottle of Linie Aquavit Original (Norway-distilled spirit) had smashed against the hull.

Viking Jupiter refurbishments review

Viking Jupiter's first drydock was in 2023 (October 26 through November 7) conducted at Port Genoa's San Giorgio del Porto shipyard.

The drydocking was for routine maintenance and classification works, technical overhauls, and inspections.

We have just returned from a cruise on the brand new Viking Jupiter ship and share our experiences on this latest ocean cruise ship from Viking Cruises.

The newest ocean ship in Viking Cruises fleet, Viking Jupiter offers a variety of cruises to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. A replica of its five sister ships, this vessel also features several similarities of the brand’s river ships. The Princess and I have just returned from 8 nights onboard this newly minted ship and give you our honest feedback in this Viking Jupiter Ship Scorecard Review.

Embarkation/Disembarkation

Met Expectations

Embarkation was a bit different than we are accustomed to with larger cruise ships. It occurred in a tent located in front of the vessel as there was no terminal in our departure port of Stockholm, Sweden. Still, we were from the bus transfer, checked-in, and onboard with a glass of champagne in hand within 15 minutes.

Viking Jupiter Scorecard

For this trip, there was no tendering involved. We docked at all 5 ports, and getting on and off the ship was effortless and well organized. Procedures were like any ocean cruise ship, with security processing passengers on and off the vessel. The one exception was Russia, where we needed to go through immigration. However, this too was efficient.

Our media group departed halfway through the Viking Homelands cruise, so disembarkation was slightly different for us. Therefore, it is difficult to rate the typical passenger experience.

As this was a “cold water cruise” with a very busy itinerary, we did not spend any time in the pools or hot tubs. Still, for a ship of this size, the Pool Deck was more than sufficient. The mid-ship pool on Deck 7 has a retractable roof, which remained closed for our entire trip. Therefore, any day could be a pool day on a Viking Ocean ship. Aft of the ship, there is also an infinity pool. It was a bit smaller than expected but did provide another option for sun worshipers to get some rays and amazing aft views. Of note, the thermal suite is also complimentary for all guests on Viking cruises, so there is an additional therapy pool located here as well to provide even more options for taking a dip.

Sports Deck

We will preface this by saying we did not have high expectations for this category. Unlike larger cruise ships with full sports courts and other amenities like rock climbing walls or ropes courses, the small outdoor sports area on Viking offers some relaxing pastimes. Among them are a putting green (NOT a mini-golf course), lawn bowling, table tennis, and shuffleboard. Given the clientele, as well as the line’s focus on destinations, these additional activities are a nice touch to break up your day weather permitting. A jogging/walking track is located on deck two and circles most of the ship offering another outdoor option for some cardio.

Exceeded Expectations

Yes, you would expect friendly and attentive service on a luxury cruise ship. Still, the team on Viking Jupiter were the most personable and responsive cruise staff we have probably ever had in over 30 cruises. No matter the venue or department, staff were always smiling and eager to help.

There were several bar servers who remembered our names, even when we didn’t remember them! They were always quick to take orders and ask about our day. Though, service in the main dining room did resemble more of a mainstream cruise line, with longer wait times and staff appearing rushed.

Viking Jupiter Service

Our stateroom attendant Jackie was also excellent. She referred to us by name from Day 1, and was like a ninja making up our room no matter what time we left in the morning or headed out for dinner.

Daily Activities

There was only one sea day during the 8 days we were onboard the ship. Still, when compared to contemporary cruise lines, there were less daytime activities occurring. As part of the cruise fare, Viking Ocean cruises includes one complimentary tour at each port of call. These tours were often bus tours or walking tours of the city centers. If you consider this part of the daily activities, then it’s a win.

While somewhat limited, Viking cruisers can still find enjoyable ways to spend their days. While normally an up-charge on other ships, the spa’s thermal suite is complimentary and open every day. Also, there were three lecturers onboard- a historian, a cultural expert, and an astronomer who was a rocket scientist! The individuals gave talks on various subject matters during the day and early evening. Unfortunately, we never attended one as we were so busy ashore. Unique to Viking Jupiter (and Viking Orion), there is also a planetarium which offers three different “shows”. We highly recommend checking them out!

On the sea day, there were also typical offerings like trivia and alcohol tastings–which might be an up-charge.

Main Dining Room

Did Not Meet Expectations

Probably the only place where we felt that Viking Jupiter did not surpass other cruise lines was the main dining room. The Restaurant on Deck 2 offered a nightly menu often featuring a small selection of regional specialties (destination menu). Of course, there was also the classic menu including steak, chicken, and salmon, as well as other menu items that changed each evening. In our opinion, the food was on par with meals you would find on the much larger vessels, with the lobster being the one standout exception.

The Viking Jupiter Restaurant

We did set the bar higher for this ship, but we found the main dining room was no better than our experiences with other cruise lines. The 3 times we dined at this venue, we were there for quite long, and the service seemed a bit slow and understaffed. In fact, we ate dinner twice in the buffet, which we almost never do (more on the buffet later).

Specialty Dining

The two specialty restaurants on Viking Jupiter, Manfredi’s and Chef’s Table, are certainly worthy upgrades to the main dining room. Both of these “specialty” restaurants are included in the price of the cruise fare with no additional up-charges, though reservations are highly recommended.

Our two dinners at Manfredi’s were excellent. The venue delivered authentic, homemade Italian food that we would expect from a high end restaurant in the North End of Boston. Among the standouts were the freshly made bread, pasta, and the massive Chicken Parmesan.

viking jupiter cruise reviews

Chef’s Table offers a five course tasting menu with up to five different menus throughout the cruise. We only dined here once for the Xiang menu. Each course was well executed, and the chef was more than happy to accommodate the Princess’ picky tastes. He created variations to the starters and a chicken entree option for her. The crispy prawns and wok fried beef (actually on the menu) were among my favorites. If we were on the full cruise, we would have definitely returned for one of the other themed evenings, knowing that the venue was willing to accommodate food preferences.

Casual Eats

While the main dining room was pretty typical, the various casual options on the ship were worthy of multiple visits. In many aspects, Viking Cruises focuses on quality over quantity. Where you will probably have more casual dining options on larger ships with varying quality of taste and preparation, the fewer casual venues on Viking Jupiter delivered every single time.

The World Cafe on Deck 7 is a cruise buffet but with some upscale food options. Each day and night, the menu provided plenty of different meats, pasta, and seafood that surpassed this New Englander’s expectations. In fact, I found myself eating more seafood on this trip than I ever eat on a cruise.

The Viking Bar serves snacks throughout the day, which included open-faced sandwiches, breakfast pastries, and cookies that were hard to resist when ordering coffee. Other casual food options include the Pool Grill with freshly made burgers and Mamsen’s with lighter fare, including some amazing custom waffles. The food at these venues was always fresh and well-prepared.

The chef also featured a few special occasions, including a well stocked seafood buffet on Night 2 on the Pool Deck and a sea day brunch with an impressive spread. Not to mention, room service is complimentary and available 24 hours a day.

Nighttime Activities and Entertainment

Unlike the ships that we typically sail on which are destinations themselves, Viking ships are the backdrop to the destinations. Still, the cruise director Heather and her assistant Ian did provide some nightly entertainment that was pretty standard for a cruise. These activities included some aforementioned lectures, as well as port talks that featured background for upcoming stops.

In the main theater on Deck 2, there was one headliner act. This comedian magician had a British sense of humor and was surprisingly entertaining. The ship also featured a quartet of Viking singers in some production shows that were pretty standard including a Tribute to ABBA. Other entertainment included an Elvis tribute by the assistant cruise director Ian, some jaw-dropping opera by the cruise director Heather, a broadcast of a MET opera, and a local performance during our overnight in Russia.

Viking Jupiter Ship Scorecard Review

Like most cruise ships, there were also musical acts that played regularly in the different venues around the ship. A solo pianist and a cello and violin duo played in the Atrium and Explorers’ Lounge offering backdrop music. Featured performers included the Viking Band and Matthew the acoustic guitarist. He was by far our favorite performer on the ship and ranks up there with our favorite cruise ship musicians.

Bars and Lounges

This 48K gross ton ship is outfitted with 7 bars featuring mostly the same drink menu. The drinks are pretty typical cocktails like martinis, mixed drinks, and long drinks to keep everyone happy. Of course, you can still get a frozen pina colada or daiquiri.

Unique to Viking Ocean is the Wintergarden. This venue hosts afternoon tea with an assortment of light bites. We thought this was a nice touch but felt that the venue should be open more. Given that it is a decent sized space and has a bar, it seemed under-utilized. Finally, the only venue with a distinct specialty cocktail menu is the night club Torshavn. This venue is the late night scene with champagne cocktails.

We stayed in a Deluxe Veranda stateroom (D2 category). The balcony was a good size with two chairs and a table that was perfect for watching sunrise or sunset. Other nice upgrades to the typical cruise ship cabin were the over-sized shower, heated floors in the bathroom, and the several outlets and USB ports on the desk and near the bed. In addition, Viking Cruises provides premium shower products that are regularly replaced by your stateroom attendant.

We felt the accommodations were comfortable but no bigger than staterooms on larger ships. Décor was stylish, yet functional. We had just enough storage between the closet and drawers. The desk was also adequate size. Overall, the cabin was well appointed and familiar, which was perfect for us.

Viking Jupiter Ship Scorecard Review

Crowd Control

With only 900 passengers, and long days ashore, it often feels like you have the entire ship to yourself. The only time we experienced any crowds was during peak times at the buffet. Besides that, there were virtually no lines anywhere. Getting a table at the Restaurant was never a problem. Bar service was fast, and getting morning coffee or evening cocktails never took more than a few minutes. Getting seats at the talks and nighttime shows was not an issue either. Embarkation and getting on/off the ship at ports of call was quick and efficient. Viking appears to do a great job dispersing crowds and providing an enjoyable and stress-free atmosphere for all.

Viking Jupiter Overall

Even though we expected a lot from Viking Cruises, we are happy to report that the cruise line delivered on all fronts with an immersive cruise experience. This was certainly not a cruise to lounge around the pool with a frozen drink. Viking Ocean Cruises focuses on destinations with a port intensive itinerary. Although, Viking Jupiter was certainly an elegant ship to call home for eight nights.

It is evident that the cruise line focuses on quality over quantity. While there were only a handful of bars and restaurants, most venues offered exquisitely executed food and well balanced drinks. In fact, the only time we felt like we were on a cruise ship was during dinner in the main dining room. Otherwise, the ship felt more like a luxury resort.

Viking Jupiter Ship Scorecard Review

Viking Jupiter has a casual yet sophisticated feel, with functional public areas and simple elegance. Features like the Viking Heritage exhibit or the self-guided art tour make you feel less like you are on a cruise ship and more like you are part of a cultural journey.

We will admit that the cruise fare might give some travelers sticker shock. Although, keep in mind that quite a bit is included in the Viking Ocean cruise fare , including one free tour at each port and house wines and beers at lunch and dinner. When you begin to factor in these additional items, this luxury cruise line is well worth the costs.

Disclaimer: We were invited on Viking Jupiter as guests of the cruise line, but all opinions and reviews are our own as always.

We are just preparing for an upcoming cruise on the Jupiter, that is still 60 days off. We are booked in a DV6 category room, and today was the 1st day we could make dining reservations. Shore excursions reservations for us started a week ago.

I was disappointed that many of shore expeditions were already full before we had a chance to book them – since higher category cabins got their pick a few days earlier.

Today, when trying to make the dinner reservations, I discovered that our category is limited to just one reservations at each of the two specialty restaurants. Just One reservations at he Italian restaurant and one at the chef’s table, and times available were less than ideal. Their marketing makes it appear that a passenger’s choices are so limited.

You will find, that the Italian restaurant will have vacancies on many nights, just rock up to the restaurant reception, and you can be lucky. Many guests do not honour their reservations because of change of plans Regards

In May 2019 Viking Jupiter, the sixth ship to join Viking Cruises’ ocean-going fleet, was floated out. Two months later she was officially named in Oslo, in the company’s homeland, by godmother Sissel Kyrkjebø, one of Norway’s most popular singers. With Barbara Streisand as one of her biggest influences, her pure soprano voice and rich, quality performances make Bergen-born Sissel a befitting godmother for Viking Jupiter and the Viking Cruises brand.

“It is always a proud moment when we are able to welcome a new ship to our fleet,” says Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. “ Viking Jupiter  is our sixth ocean vessel in just four years, a clear sign of the positive response to our approach to ocean cruising.”

Viking Jupiter is 745ft long and has 465 staterooms that can accommodate 930 guests, just like her sister ships Viking Star, Viking Sea, Viking Sky, Viking Sun and Viking Orion.

There are some differences that the ship shares with Viking Orion, such as the record-breaking 26-seater Planetarium. It is the highest definition Digistar planetarium in the world, and when it launched on Viking Orion it was the first 3D Stereo Planetarium on a ship.

Yet overall, each vessel in the fleet is designed to provide the same experience on board, a strategy that fuels the company’s high repeat booking rate.

Around 55% to 60% of Viking Cruises ocean ship guests come from repeat bookings. Joachim Scherz, Viking Cruises’ hotel general manager, says this is due to the highly personalised level of hospitality, which he says is difficult to find elsewhere.

“The most important thing that people don’t realise about the cruise industry is that the soul of a ship is its people, not the design or technology,” says Scherz. “You need to create a team culture of belonging and pride to succeed and we have done this very successfully since the first Viking Ocean ship was launched in 2015.”

Scherz stresses that part of Viking’s successful screw culture strategy is based around the ‘freedom to act’, a strategy demonstrated by the on-shore leadership team, which guides against micro-managing employees.

“It is very important to give employees the freedom to decide, in whatever situation, what is in the best interest of our very valuable guests,” he explains. “We never criticise such decisions and whenever mistakes are made, we treat them as learning opportunities. Even in such cases were the guest experience could be improved, our crew is empowered to take action and resolve issues as they see fit.”

As a guest on Viking Jupiter’s “Into the Midnight Sun” itinerary , which sailed from Greenwich to Bergen in July 2019 – I was on board for the Norway stage, from Tromso to Bergen – I experienced this five-star service first-hand.

On arrival at the stateroom your cruise steward provides a personal stateroom tour, explaining any useful functionality, such as how to dim the main lighting on Viking Jupiter (which, I was told, is new to this ship), how to control the bathroom’s underfloor heating, that there are USB charging ports by the bed, and how to use the room’s coffee machine, which comes with coffee and milk pods.

When I asked if there were any dairy-free options, the steward, called Max, said he would organise some for me. On returning to my stateroom I discovered a carton of Almond milk in the fridge, which I could use as I wished – it was the perfect solution as I had also mentioned that I enjoyed lattes, which require generous servings of milk. This is a good example of the type of care you will receive as a passenger on board.

“This stems from a company culture of continuous improvement, going above and beyond, striving for excellence and ownership,” said Scherz. “Many organisations are afraid to give such freedom and attribute, but at Viking we do, and I believe it is critical to success.”

Technology matters

Maintaining the high level of service on board across Viking Cruises’ ocean fleet and keeping it consistent, as well as exceeding expectations, are one of the biggest challenges for the team on board. While people come first, technology plays a crucial role in helping the crew to identify personal preferences of customers.

The Viking Voyager app allows passengers to organise their cruise on their smartphone and to keep on top of the daily schedule. It is possible to reserve activities such as shore excursions, spa treatments and Planetarium shows, as well as dining reservations.

This means that the hospitality team has access to any special requirements guests may have. Whether I was eating at Manfredi’s Italian, Chef’s Table or The Restaurant the staff knew that I needed dairy-free options and will go out of their way to meet guests’ needs. On a previous cruise on Viking Sun, the sommelier, Andrej, remembered the wines we were enjoying on previous evenings to help guide his recommendations, and General Manager Sujith Mohan went beyond the call of duty to ensure guests’ needs were met, as did Viking Jupiter’s General Manager, Maurice Andrades.

“We are a small team, overall, that lead the operations of all our ships,” says Viking Cruises ocean operations executive director Ralph de Klijn. He ensures operations run smoothly across the fleet and has a particular passion for innovation and finding new ways to improve the guest experience. “We see it as a big puzzle that we are all a small piece of,” he adds, “so it’s essential that we all work together so all fits in the right order.”

Removing friction to enhance the passenger experience

For Viking Cruises, harnessing technology to store guests’ preferences before embarkation (such as allergens, wish lists, celebrations and dietary requirements) means the team can cater to passengers’ needs more effectively. “It gives us the chance to be prepared in advance, especially for items that are not part of our standard range,” he says.

Viking Cruises’ digital platform, which includes the app and the stateroom TV, has been designed to remove friction on board, which has resulted in less waiting and more leisure time. The latter provides safety videos, destination films, access to on-board lectures, as well as a daily show presented by Cruise Director Vicki Van Tassel that tells guests what to expect throughout the day.

While the average age of passengers is 70 (although the cruise line caters for the needs of the 50-plus market), Viking Cruises’ innovation team confirm that around 80% of guests have smartphones. Approximately 90% of these will interact digitally with the company within four days of coming on board.

The team note that guests spend at least 11 minutes each day on the app and so the team are now working to extend the digital service to the river fleet.

Technology also supports the crew, enabling a more efficient service. “The crew is becoming more flexible with more portable devices and remote working possibilities throughout the ship,” says Scherz. “We are aiming to fine tune this service going forward.”

He says that the remote ordering devices that waiting crew use communicate directly with the culinary team.

“This reduces the ordering time and handwritten checks, and reduces the missing items or mistakes by providing accurate and instant orders,” he explains.

“In addition, our culinary team shore side worked on the system to be able to place orders based on cycles and recipes accurately – that helps with time efficiency and waste reduction.”

Success through consistency and ownership

The launch of Viking Jupiter comes during a year when Travel + Leisure readers voted Viking Cruises as the best ocean cruise line (for its ship size) for an unprecedented fourth consecutive year. In the Cruise Critic awards earlier on in 2019, for the small to mid-size ship group, Viking Cruises won: Best Overall Ship, Best Cabins, Best Dining, Best for Public Rooms, Best Service and Best Value for Money.

For Scherz, preparing Viking Jupiter to join the fleet required an intense focus on consistency and ownership.

“As you can imagine, launching a new vessel is a lot of work: logistics, purchasing, storing, planning itineraries and technical matters, just to name a few,” he says. “It is imperative that given procedures, service standards and practices are being implemented correctly right from the start, and a team effort is demonstrated and executed.”

But he adds that the process is also “exciting and a lot of fun”.

“Once a new ship is launched, you literally feel the amount of pride throughout the vessel, which certainly has a tremendous effect towards our guests when welcoming them on board,” he says.

“Our colleagues across the fleet are valued as individuals – they share their stories and experiences with our guests, who do the same in return.”

8 Reasons To Take a Viking Homelands Cruise

8 reasons to do a ‘viking homelands’ cruise.

I t’s easy to think of Vikings for what they’re known for as opposed to where they sailed. Yes, they did raid communities, but they also participated in trade. Their fine shipbuilding skills are also familiar. They ventured along The Baltic Sea, aligned by present-day countries including Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Germany, Russia, and Poland.

However, presently this Viking legacy is being retraced by a Viking of a different kind, a cruise ship company. Viking’s “Viking Homelands Cruise” goes along the Baltic Sea, stopping at eight ports within Scandinavia, the Russian Federation, and Northern Europe. As a result, you get to explore cultures, histories, and cuisines.

Viking Jupiter , a Viking ship launched in February 2019, carries out the 15-daylong “Viking Homelands” itinerary. It all starts with casting off in Stockholm and disembarking in Bergen. You can book your Viking Ocean Cruise here.

Here are eight reasons for taking this particular Viking cruise.

It’s Got Nordic Features

With 465 staterooms that can host 930 guests, the nine-deck level Viking Jupiter has modern Scandinavian design elements. Interior touches have inspiration from the time of the Vikings, with reproduced Bayeux Tapestry stairwell furnishings and Viking-related artifacts on display.

On Deck 1, The Viking Living Room is where passengers can unwind. In other words, you can order a drink and light snack at a clinker-built bar inspired by ancient longships. On Deck 7, after the main pool, The Wintergarden is a model of Yggdrasil. It’s an Old Norse folkloric tale meaning “tree of life.” It’s reflected in a canopy forest setting perfect for a daily afternoon tea service that takes place here.

Also on Deck 7, Mamsen’s is a casual gourmet deli for Norwegian cuisine, with smoked salmon, open-faced sandwiches, and a heart-shaped waffle. The recipe originates from Viking founder Torstein Hagen’s mother, who, to him, is Mamsen. The deli is named for her; plates replicate her dishware pattern. The adjacent Explorers’ Lounge is a cocktail setting. It’s for sitting near a faux fireplace and curling up on couches with fur-lined throws.

The Viking Homelands Cruise Dining Is Global

Dining onboard Viking Homelands cruise reflects intercontinental flavors. Along with Deck 7’s Mamsen’s, The Pool Grill prepares hamburgers and other casual meals; World Café serves up a global range of cuisine with breakfast and dinner buffet-style servings, and Aquavit Terrace has alfresco dining.

On Deck 2, The Restaurant ties to a port destination’s gastronomy with native dishes and locally-sourced ingredients. In-room dining is available 24 hours (I got the mac and cheese at midnight and it came.).

On Deck 1, Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant is all about quintessential Italian cuisine. Appetizers, anti-pastas, and entrees including pasta, meats, and vegetarian choices are amazing. There’s even a fish of the day and an incredible breadbasket.

Its neighboring The Chefs Table precisely curates food and wine pairings tied to a destination. An “Asian Panorama” menu reflected the continent’s diverse gastronomy; dishes ranged from a king crab amuse bouche, to Peking Duck. Dessert can be anything from a trio of yuzu Crème Brulee to a green tea cheesecake to a chocolate banana spring roll. In addition, another dinner was about traditional Mexican dishes. This includes a prickly pear (nopal) granita, a short rib with a mole sauce, and a trifecta of chocolate desserts.

“The Kitchen Table” is an onboard cooking school. The ship’s Executive Chef takes guests to local markets to pick ingredients that they will use in helping to prepare an evening meal.

The Spa Is Nordic Too

The Nordic experience on Viking Jupiter also encompasses holistic wellness. On Deck 1, alongside a fitness center and hair salon, LivNordic Spa & Fitness everything to pamper you. It has cold and hot plunge pools and facials, massages and body treatments incorporating Scandinavian ingredients or techniques.

A Nordic Bathing Ritual lets you partake in this traditional Scandinavian hot and cold method for improving circulation. The ritual begins with passengers being given and practicing using a dry skin brush. Afterward, they get a good sweat inside a steam room and then cool off in a snow grotto.

In between switches, a birch tree branch slightly flicks your back. After that, a choice of a scalp or foot massage plus a sample set of beauty products to end the ritual. You can also use the spa’s plunge pools, sauna, and snow grotto on your own.

A Variety of Excursions on the Viking Homelands Cruise

What I liked most about the “Viking Homelands” cruise was the shore excursion programming. For each day that Viking Jupiter was at port, there were a variety of escorted tours for seeing specific attractions or getting an overview of the city.

There are included city tours on foot and/or bus or boat. In other words, they ensure cultural exposure. Priced excursions encompass top-rated attractions, immersive activities or popular interests. You could see the Vasa Museum in Stockholm ; feed reindeer in Finland’s Nuuksio National Park; or get a humorous glance at life under Russian rule in Tallinn .

We could also explore cities on our own, with drop-offs and pickups via a complimentary Viking shuttle from the ports to a central location. They depart every half hour.

No Issue with Russian Visa

“Viking Homelands” includes two days in St. Petersburg. Along with seeing this Russian city, this Viking cruise enables passengers to be exempt from pre-requiring a Russian visa. A no-visa entry enables cruise ship passengers to stay in the city for no longer than 72 hours; however, they have to sleep on the ship and be accompanied by a guide while on tours.

When disembarking in St. Petersburg, Viking passengers present their passports and stateroom keycards to officers at a control terminal; they glance carefully at you and then stamp your passport and then you head off on your tour.

Back to port, go through a security screening and check-in again with officers before re-boarding the ship. You pass through a corridor of souvenir stands, where you can easily pick up a Matryoshka doll or other items; along with Rubles, vendors take U.S. Dollars and Euros. St. Petersburg excursions extend to a ride on the Metro system; tickets to a folkloric performance or ballet; and tours of The Hermitage, Catherine Palace, Peterhof Palace, and Faberge Museum.

Look to the Skies

It might be possible to see the Northern Lights while sailing on Viking Jupiter, usually during fall and winter months, but get closer to the sky below deck in the Planetarium (it’s the second Viking ship to have one; so does Viking Orion).

On the upper level of The Explorers’ Lounge, The Explorers’ Dome presents three daily shows  “Hidden Universe,” “Explore” and “Experience the Aurora”. Advance reservations are a requirement; book your seat through the Viking Voyager app, along with your port excursions.

Get Some Knowledge

In emphasizing the definition of “destination driven-learning,” the Viking Resident Historian program has on-board experts lecturing on subjects relating to ports of call or other explorative topics. On my “Viking Homelands” cruise, the ship had an astronomer, a cultural expert and a historian discussing everything from Imperial Russia to the meaning of the cosmos. Port talks cover aspects of each port (with pre-recorded ones on TV in the staterooms) and TED Talks present a certain topic of the day.

On-Board Entertainment That’s Entertaining

Looking for something to do on Viking Jupiter is easy to find. Help yourself a book relating to inspiration or exploration among the library in the Viking Living Room or among bookcases throughout the ship. Day or night programming may feature competitions like travel trivia and name that tune or card games. Live music is all around. There are performances by their resident pianist in The Living Room and a guitarist at The Explorers’ Lounge. In the later hours, Patricia, Ar-Ar, and the Viking Band play top hits of the past decades at the jazz club, Torshavn.

The newsletter lists the following day’s schedule and found in the staterooms every evening. Learn more about Viking Jupiter and “Viking Homelands” here and find great savings on Viking Ocean Cruises here .
