15 Best Things to Do in Cape Canaveral (FL)

Cape Canaveral is known the world over for its decades-long ties to space exploration and the space industry. The city itself is a short way south of the namesake space force station, and the Kennedy Space Center.

You can reach both with ease, although I should point out that there are restrictions on who can visit Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

Both installations are still active, and during your time here you may witness NASA or SpaceX launches. These are jaw-dropping sights, with plumes climbing up to the heavens.

Cape Canaveral has family visitor attractions, a selection of beach parks, and, on the west side, the dumbfounding natural wealth of the Banana River lagoon. At waterfront parks here you may see dolphins playing, or herds of manatees grazing on the seagrass.

1. Kennedy Space Center

Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral

The awe-inspiring visitor complex for the Kennedy Space Center is the Space Coast’s most visited attraction. No question, this is a must-see for those interested in science, technology, and space exploration.

Most Kennedy Space Center tours include transportation and a knowledgeable guide. Depending on the package, you can access many behind-the-scenes areas and plenty of amazing interactive exhibits as well.

Items on display include moon rocks, space suits, equipment, photographs, and first-hand accounts of those who’ve worked in the program over the years.

If there’s one thing I think everyone should prioritize, it’s the mind-boggling Space Shuttle Atlantis. This veteran orbiter made the last of its 33 flights in 2011, and is mounted at an angle like it’s floating in space.

2. Cape Canaveral Space Force Museum

Air Force Space and Missile History Center

Space exploration history has been made many times at the world-famous Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS), just north of the city proper and founded in 1949.

The first US astronaut, the first US astronaut in orbit and the first US satellite in orbit were launched from this installation.

Now, as an active launch site, creating a wonderful spectacle periodically, access isn’t easy. This can be done on the Cape Canaveral Early Space Tour via the Kennedy Space Center, or via the Canaveral Tours company. These were the only way for the public to visit the installation’s museum when I compiled this list.

But you do not need special arrangements to visit the museum’s Sands Space History Center. This attraction is located just outside the base, and is a must for anyone interested in the early history of space exploration.

There are artifacts going back to the 1950s, along with complete histories of each of the base’s launchpads.

3. Cape Canaveral Rocket Launches

Space exploration and the space industry are part of the history but also the present of Cape Canaveral. This is never more apparent than when there’s a rocket launch.

And in Cape Canaveral you’re in the perfect location to watch these events. Taking off from various sites around the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and the Kennedy Space Center, these are generally SpaceX launches, but there are some NASA launches too.

I found the experience of watching a launch from the beach in Cape Canaveral to be almost surreal. For the clearest view there’s a designation viewpoint on the Banana River outside the space force station.

4. Banana River Aquatic Preserve

Banana River Aquatic Preserve

Between the cape and Merritt Island, the Banana River is an ecologically vibrant portion of the Indian River Lagoon.

Cape Canaveral is one of a number of cities bordering an Aquatic Preserve comprising nearly 30,000 acres. Almost all of this area is water, along with man-made spoil islands created by dredging, and now taken over by nature.

The preserve is home to a variety of wildlife, like manatees, gators, and sea turtles. It’s also one of the largest pelican rookeries on the state’s Atlantic coast.

To fully immerse yourself in this natural haven I reckon you need to hit the water in a kayak. There’s a catalog of outfitters and tour companies to help you do this.

A few in and near Cape Canaveral are A1A Beach Rentals, BradyYaks Kayak Tours and Rentals, Cocoa Kayaking and Fin Expeditions.

5. Jetty Park Beach & Pier

As well as being an awesome vantage point for rocket launches at the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, this shorefront park is also right by Port Canaveral.

At the long pier at Jetty Park I saw some cruise ships of truly epic proportions passing close by. There’s also amazing wildlife to check out, and you may well spot dolphins and sea turtles from the pier.

Jetty Park also has a campground, with scores of RV sites, cabins and tent sites, as well as amenities like a superb play area, boat ramps, and pavilions. A word on the beach too, which is several acres of soft sand, with umbrellas and chairs available for rental.

6. Wizard of Oz Museum

Opened during the pandemic, this museum is an enchanting ode to the Wizard of Oz. That goes for L. Frank Baum’s books, as much as the 1939 Hollywood movie.

Considering this is a private museum, realized by just one person, I was amazed by the Wizard of Oz Museum. There’s a whole trove of memorabilia, with some 2,000 items relating to the stories and the culture surrounding them.

Most enthralling of all is the Immersive Experience, using projectors to recreate scenes from the Oz books. These include the Party in Emerald City, the Tornado, and the Witch’s Castle.

7. Cherie Down Park

This gorgeous public beach access is in a quiet, mostly residential area. With a lot of parking and a range of amenities like showers and picnic shelters, Cherie Down Park is a wonderful place to spend the day on the Atlantic shore.

I counted three entry points through the dunes, and when you get onto the beach you’ll be wowed by an epic swath of pale sand, stretching out at least a couple hundred feet at low tide.

Conditions permitting, the waves are consistent enough for surfing, and this is one of many places to watch the launches to the north.

8. Manatee Sanctuary Park

Manatee Sanctuary Park

Facing west on the Banana River, this picture-perfect park is my favorite place to be at sunset. Despite the name, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll see manatees here.

They are occasionally seen munching on the seagrass, but tend to show up infrequently. Either way, you can study the lagoon from a covered boardwalk, and there are a variety of observation points along the way.

While manatees pass by occasionally, you stand a much better chance of seeing dolphins and turtles.

Among the park’s many amenities there’s a ½-mile fitness trail, exercise stations, a covered pavilion, and a playground with sun sails.

9. Brevard Zoo

Brevard Zoo, Melbourne, FL

What I adore about this zoo on the mainland is the naturalistic setting for its animal residents. Instead of fences, Brevard Zoo’s 900+ animals are contained by natural-looking barriers and water.

This makes it possible to view exotic species in surprising ways. So, in addition to typical zoo activities, you can go kayaking past African wildlife.

Or you can make your way across a high ropes course in the rainforest with a bird’s eye view of jaguars and monkeys.

Feeding experiences bring you even closer to the Brevard Zoo’s animals. For instance, you can hand-feed the giraffes, or enter a free-flight aviary, where lorikeets and cockatiels will come and perch on your finger.

10. Exploration Tower

Exploration Tower

An architectural icon for Port Canaveral, Exploration Tower opened in 2013 on the port’s 60th anniversary.

With inspiring views in all directions, the tower has seven floors of exhibits and interactive stations. These explore the cape’s culture, animals, ecology, not to mention its fascinating space exploration history.

There’s an on-site café and gift shops as well. Meanwhile on clear days, there’s no better place to watch a rocket launch than the 7th-floor observation deck.

The last time I visited, the Exploration Tower was temporarily closed to the public due to a maintenance project.

11. Cape Canaveral Lighthouse

Cape Canaveral Lighthouse

Standing 151 feet tall and dating back to the mid-19th century, the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse is set within the Space Force Station.

The current tower was lit in 1868, and then the whole structure was moved inland to its current spot in the 1890s.

Now, being on the space force station poses some difficulties when it comes to access. Visits are only available via Canaveral Tours, based in Port Canaveral. Meanwhile non-US visitors were unable to access the station at the time I wrote this article.

If you’re fortunate enough to gain access, you’ll be in the company of an enlightening docent. They’ll share all kinds of interesting facts and anecdotes about the cape, the lighthouse, and its keepers.

12. Golf N Gator

More than a simple miniature golf course this attraction along A1A is a complete outdoor fun center. Set among water features and tropical plants, there are two 18-hole courses at Gator Mountain and Swamp Cave.

These are made all the more fun by challenge wheels, posing special tests for players. As you may tell from the name, Golf N Gator keeps live alligators, of all ages and sizes.

Kids will get to hold a baby gator and feed the monsters in the swamp. On top of all that, there’s a mining area, where little ones can pan for gemstones.

On the same property, Beachside Grand Prix is a separate attraction. What you get here is wacky Mario Kart-style track, with multiple levels and electric karts.

13. Center Street Park

Center Street Park, Cape Canaveral

Follow Center Street until it touches the Banana River and you’ll come to this small but wonderfully located park. Center Street Park is tiny, but its appeal comes from its western orientation.

Under grand palm trees or the shelter of a gazebo you can set your gaze on the lagoon in all its glory. This is another spot in Cape Canaveral where the sunsets are out of this world.

Linger long enough and you may get to see some of the Banana River’s wildlife. I was fortunate to see dolphins breaching, while manatees are known to appear in any season.

14. Tropic Ice Cream

Tropic Ice Cream

A necessary stop on A1A, there’s a traditional ice cream stand with a big selection of flavors. I was pleased with the ample serving sizes at Tropic Ice Cream, not to mention the surprisingly affordable prices.

I counted 35 hand dip Hershey’s ice cream flavors, and another 25 that are gluten free. If I had to recommend just one, it would probably be the brown butter bourbon truffle.

Of course, Tropic Ice Cream makes shakes, and with all these flavors there’s an almost endless list of combinations. There’s also soft serve here, as well as sundaes, and shaved ice, if you want something refreshing on a hot day.

15. Victory Casino Cruises

Setting sail from Port Canaveral is a casino ship offering a Vegas-style gaming experience on board. On board Victory Casino Cruises there are 600+ slot machines, along with a lot of card/table games from baccarat to roulette, blackjack, Mississippi stud and Texas hold’em.

Add to the mix bingo and sportsbook, and you’ve got a gaming paradise. As well as the joys of the open ocean, Victory Casino Cruises pack high-quality live entertainment.

This all ramps up on the weekends when there’s a party vibe, boosted by DJs and nationally-renowned performers. There’s à la carte dining at the Atlantic Café, and alcoholic beverages are complimentary while gambling.

Cape Canaveral Lighthouse

The first lighthouse was erected some 150 years ago to warn mariners of the dangerous areas along the shore. Unfortunately, the first lighthouse, which was only 60 feet tall, was not tall enough. The next one was too close to the shore and had to be moved, which was not an easy task in terrain full of swamps and lowlands. Finally, after ten months of rebuilding, the new lighthouse was relit in 1894 in the location where it stands today. The new tower is made of iron plates that are bolted together and covered with two layers of brick. The entire lighthouse is 151 feet tall, and it sends a beam of light 22 nautical miles towards the sea. More beaches in Florida

Learn about space history through Cape Canaveral tours, including Cocoa Beach and Titusville -- also referred to as Florida's Space Coast.

Cocoa Beach has cool kitsch. A weekend here might include a stop at the Surf Museum, shopping at a tiki gallery and a trip down I Dream of Jeannie Lane (yes, it’s a real street). Yes, master. This is a beach town with a sense of humor and a serious case of nostalgia – a lively, beloved throwback that also happens to occupy a crucial spot on America’s timeline.

Cocoa Beach and its environs, including Titusville and Cape Canaveral , are all part of the Space Coast, a designation that emphasizes the area’s rich ties to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s John F. Kennedy Space Center. All manned spaceflight in the United States has lifted off from Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex pays tribute to circa-1960s space culture (the Mercury 7 team flew six times between 1961 and 1963), especially in its collection of rare memorabilia at the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. It's a must-see when you visit Cape Canaveral.

Outside the Kennedy Space Center, which your Cape Canaveral tours will include, the beachy landscape still has the power to evoke the moment when the popular imagination was gripped by the possibilities of space travel. In the early days, Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Alan Shepard, John Glenn and the rest of the Mercury 7 crew tooled around what was known as Missileland, U.S.A., where crowds once gathered on the beach to watch launches through binoculars – and still do.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, when the Air Force’s missile test center was well established on Cape Canaveral and the space program was tuning up, the local population swelled from 23,000 to 70,000. The town’s character also became more expansive: Motels named after space themes such as The Sea Missile and Satellite popped up alongside trippy diners like The Moon Hut. These mod motels hosted launch parties out by their pools for industry-insiders and boasted extravagant signage. We pay homage to the “Mercury 7” era with top sights from the time of Mercury and Apollo.

Visit Cape Canaveral's Historic Sites

John f. kennedy space center.

Think of this place as the base camp around which the other Space Coast sites orbit. The Visitor Complex is command central for families looking to engage with the universe, which feels awfully close here.

At the complex’s U.S Astronaut Hall of Fame, commissioned by the Mercury 7, you’ll find Gus Grissom’s smaller-than-you’d-expect space suit (the original flight capsules were only 6 feet by 10 inches high). The Sigma 7 Mercury craft is also on display, as well as Deke Slayton’s on-board knife, in place, if necessary, to pry open the capsule door. You’ll see Mercury 7 equipment and hardware, Gordo Cooper’s cue cards from the first TV broadcast from space, transmission recordings, space rocks and dirt.

KSC has added new ways to experience space other than just buying astronaut ice cream in the gift shop; you can now go through astronaut training as part of the Astronaut Training Experience program at the Astronaut Hall of Fame, feel what it's like to launch aboard the space shuttle on the Shuttle Launch Experience at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex, smell the moon and have lunch with a real astronaut.

Riverside Presbyterian Church

In 1962, John Glenn and his family worshipped at Riverside Presbyterian Church at 3400 N. Atlantic Ave. on the A1A. It was here that Glenn was mobbed by autograph seekers; Glenn also spoke from the pulpit of what is now the church’s Knox Hall.

Space Walk of Fame Museum

This riverwalk at 8 Broad St. in Titusville (which includes a Mercury monument with a giant “7” and astronaut handprints) includes interactive displays and plaques that celebrate the achievements of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronauts, as well as the hundreds of engineers, mechanics and others who made the space program possible. Head to the accompanying museum at 4 Main St. to see launch consoles and Titan memorabilia. The museum even has Soviet space memorabilia. Look across the water and you can see the mammoth (and historic) Vehicle Assembly Building in the distance.

La Quinta Inn Cocoa Beach (Formerly Cape Colony Resort)

In 1962, the original Mercury 7 astronauts invested in this hotel, which was originally called the Cape Colony Resort. You’ll find a plaque commemorating the 7 outside by the front pool entrance.

33 Fun Things to Do in Cape Canaveral, Florida

things to do in Cape Canaveral

It’s blessed by warm rays year-round, made all the better with the cool Atlantic sea breeze. Yet still, Florida’s Cape Canaveral is far more than merely a beachy getaway; it’s a treasure trove of nature, science, museums, and history , all rolled into one – and served with a hefty side of rocket launches thanks to its role as a space force base.

And with a diverse range of events (none more famous than the shuttle and rocket launches), restaurants, celebrations, and beaches (look no further than Playalinda Beach); not to mention the infamous Kennedy Space Center, beloved Manatee Sanctuary, and quintessential Ron Jon Surf Shop, seldom does this slice of entertainment-rich paradise disappoint.

So whether you’re young of age or young at heart, a beach bum or science geek (or a little bit of both), a foodie or a nature lover, there’s definitely something for everyone in this Floridian town. So, without further ado, here are fun things to do in Cape Canaveral the next time you find yourself journeying through eastern Florida.

1 – Meet the local wildlife at Manatee Sanctuary Park

Manatee Sanctuary Park in Cape Canaveral, Florida

Set against the Banana River and spread over some 10 acres of land, Manatee Sanctuary Park is a serene and beautiful spot that’s perfect for picnicking, fishing, kayaking, or just taking a leisurely stroll.

As its name suggests, the park is also home to a large number of manatees (Florida’s state marine mammal), which you’re a chance to see lazing in the shallow waters or basking on the banks.

Friendly and bubbly, these blubbery beauties are known to come and feed off the seagrass along the boardwalk from time to time. But if you don’t spot one, keep your eyes peeled for occasional dolphins, osprey, waterfowl, and colorful birds.

Animals aside, it’s a splendid place to watch the sunset and forget about the hustle and bustle of big city life for a couple of hours. And with a handful of serene walking paths, workout stations, a playground for the youngsters, quirky statues, and covered picnic areas to boot, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

2 – Enjoy the view (and learn a thing or two) at Exploration Tower

Exploration Tower, Cape Canaveral

Soaring some seven stories high, just off the waterfront and right next to the Cape Canaveral cruise ship terminals, the Exploration Tower – looking like a boat’s sail (not too dissimilar from the 7-star Dubai hotel, in fact, just smaller-scale) offers up unbeatable views over the harbor, the Kennedy Space Center (perfect for viewing launches!), the Air Force Station, Cocoa Beach and beyond.

But this is more than just a lookout point – it’s also an interactive museum that tells the story of the area, from its earliest days as an integral part of Florida’s space program to its role as one of the busiest cruise ports in all of North America.

Each of the building’s seven floors serves a specific purpose; be that a viewpoint, a museum, or a spot to eat. With hands-on exhibits about the air and space frontiers (level 6), the many ships and boats that pass through Port Canaveral (level 5), or the history of the local environment (level two), there’s plenty to be learned.

Throw in a 72 seat state-of-the-art theater showing regular short films (exclusive to the Tower), and a top-floor outdoor deck where you can snap some photos or simply take in the views, this is well worth an hour or two of your time – especially if you have kids in tow.

3 – Join a dolphin-watching or kayaking trip!

Dolphin-watching tours in Cape Canaveral, Florida

Famous for its friendly residents, there’s no better place to go dolphin watching than the shores of Atlantic Florida. You can often spot them frolicking in the waves right from the shore, but for a closer encounter, consider heading out on a boat or kayak tour .

There are plenty of operators offering up tours – some lasting as little as an hour, others going for half a day or more – so you’re sure to find something that suits your schedule and budget. And with knowledgeable guides leading the way, you’re bound to learn all sorts of fun facts about these amazing creatures over the course of your adventure.

Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for other wildlife too; manatees, turtles, stingrays, pelicans, and more call this stretch of coast home, so you never know what you might see.

Suitable for both experienced kayakers and first-timers (including kids), these tours offer the chance to get off the beaten path, wandering into the backwaters and along mangrove shorelines to see these wild animals in their natural habitat!

4 – Soak in the serenity of Canaveral National Seashore

Canaveral National Seashore, Cape Canaveral

An absolutely stunning slice of old Florida, Canaveral National Seashore is a must-visit for anyone spending time in the area.

Comprising more than 24 miles of unspoiled beaches (including Playalinda Beach, where you can often spot turtles nesting), this is a place where nature truly comes first. As such, there are no high-rise buildings or busy boardwalks to be found; just miles and miles of pristine sand dunes, lagoons, marshes, and mangroves to explore.

Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach, go for a swim, fish from the shoreline, paddle a canoe or kayak through the inland waterways, or simply take in the views with a leisurely stroll along with one of the many nature trails, Canaveral National Seashore has something for everyone. And as the longest stretch of undeveloped public beach on the state’s eastern seaboard, you’ll never feel crowded.

Oh, and did we mention that it’s also home to the Kennedy Space Center? Time your trip and you might even be lucky enough to spot a rocket taking off in the distance – just check their website for the most up-to-date launch info.

If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and connect with nature, this is most definitely the place for you.

Entrance fees will set you back $20 per vehicle or $15 per motorcycle and are valid for 7 days. But if you plan on staying a while, a $40 annual pass is the best bang for your buck. Or, if it lines up with your trip, there are 5 free entrance days during the year (Martin Luther King Day, the first day of National Park Week, August 4th – Anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act, Veterans Day, and the National Public Lands Day).

5 – Set up a picnic at Alan Shepard Beachfront Park

Alan Shepard Beachfront Park in Cape Canaveral, Florida

Named for the first American to journey into space (with a suborbital flight aboard Freedom 7), Alan Shepard Beachfront Park is a great place to spend an afternoon if you’re looking for something low-key in the fresh, open air.

This unique, five-acre park grants access to the beach, however, is typically far quieter than the neighboring Cocoa Beach, making it perfect for a relaxing day in the sun.

And with plenty of amenities on offer – including picnic pavilions, grills, a playground, lifeguard tower, and more – you can easily while away a few hours here.

But the real highlight is definitely the boardwalk that winds its way through the park, offering up stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean as you go and acting as a prime location for watching any rocket launches. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins frolicking offshore as you stroll!

The park is open from sunrise to sunset every day and best of all, admission is totally free (just pay for parking – $2.50 per hour)! With a handful of nearby restaurants, as well as the Ron Jon Surf Shop (self-dubbed the world’s most famous surf shop), there’s plenty to keep you busy.

6 – Meet actual astronauts at the iconic Kennedy Space Center

Kennedy Space Center, Orlando

Simply put, a trip to Cape Canaveral wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex – it’s not just one of the best things to do in Cape Canaveral, but statewide!

As one of America’s most coveted tourist destinations, you’ll need to block out the whole day. With so much on offer – from tours and simulators to movies in the IMAX theater; and exhibits on spacecraft, space heroes, the science of intergalactic exploration, and a slew of Mission Zones (to name just a few of the attractions) – there’s something for everyone, regardless of your age or interest level in space travel.

And with an up-close look at historic spacecraft like the Atlantis, 60 interactive displays celebrating the history and technology of NASA’s Space Shuttle Program, and inspiring presentations by former and current astronauts, you’re sure to leave feeling inspired.

For those looking to feel the rocketman thrill, the heart-racing Shuttle Launch Experience will have the adrenaline surging like no tomorrow, while the Astronaut Training Simulator will show you the ropes of operating one of mankind’s most complex machines.

Of course, if you’re lucky enough to time it right, the undisputed highlight of the Space Center is the live rocket launches. But even if you don’t, the experience of touring actual NASA Control Rooms and standing alongside actual enormous rockets in the Rocket Garden is sure to be a memorable one.

While you can grab tickets at the door, if you book online you’ll also have access to VIP packages, hotel pickup, and dropoff options, and transport from Orlando, depending on which tour you choose. And with plenty of restaurants and cafes on-site, you won’t go hungry either.

If you plan on staying longer, however, Jetty Park also hosts a range of accommodation options – tent sites, rustic cabins, and RV hookups – as well as a general store and picnic pavilions, so you can make a real vacation of it.

Either way, thanks to its location, Jetty Park makes for a killer spot to watch the boats, submarines, and rockets do their thing; with plenty of marine life for snorkelers (and fishing from the pier), and a host of water-based activities like kayaking or jet ski rentals.

20 – Admire the colossal ships at Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral, Cape Canaveral

Regularly welcoming enormous cruise ships (and submarines!), Port Canaveral is a hub of activity day and night.

As the second busiest cruise port in the world (first place goes to the Port of Miami, in case you were wondering), there’s always something going on – whether it be one of Royal Caribbean’s gargantuan vessels making its way in or out of the dock, or watching the many private yachts and charter boats bobbing up and down in the water.

Even if you’re not planning on boarding a cruise during your stay, Port Canaveral is definitely worth a visit. With plenty of restaurants, cafes, and bars lining the boardwalk – as well as some excellent seafood spots should you fancy something fresh – it’s easy to make an afternoon or evening of people-watching and taking in the atmosphere.

Not to be forgotten is the view: thanks to its location just south of the Space Force base, the unobstructed port is a prime spot to watch rocket launches (if you’re lucky!)

21 – Try your hand at paddleboarding

paddleboarding in Cape Canaveral

A sport that’s both relaxing and much more of a workout than meets the eye, stand-up paddleboarding has taken the world by storm over the past decade (albeit an age-old activity), and Cape Canaveral is no exception.

Down at Cocoa Beach (just a short drive from Cape Canaveral proper), you can find a number of SUP rental companies, offering boards and lessons for all levels – even if you’ve never tried SUPing before, you’ll get the hang of it in no time.

Once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s time to explore! Paddle your way around the shallow waters of the Banana River, keeping an eye out for turtles and rays, or make your way out to the open ocean for a real workout.

If you’re feeling extra adventurous, why not try your hand at SUP yoga? It’s a great way to zen out and get in some exercise while you’re at it. Or, if traveling in a group, consider the giant inflatable 10+ person board!

22 – Play a round or two of golf

Golf in Cape Canaveral, Florida

Florida and spectacular golf courses go together like, well, peanut butter and jelly.

And while you might not think of Cape Canaveral as a golfer’s paradise, there are actually quite a few excellent courses in and around the area, perfect for an afternoon on the fairways under that toasty sun.

There are numerous ways to explore the preserve, but perhaps the most popular is by kayak. You can rent a kayak from one of the many companies in Cocoa Beach and head out on your own, or sign up for a guided tour for a more educational experience.

Having opened in 2021, this new 20,000-cubic-feet museum is highly interactive, with modern displays that let you try on Dorothy’s shoes, travel through that infamous Kansas tornado, wander around Munchkin Land, and the dark forest, and stroll through poppy fields into the sparkling Emerald City.

A treat for movie (and book) fans, the museum contains a vast array of memorabilia, including Dorothy’s outfits, original film posters, comics, toys, maps, original props and costumes, collectible figurines, fine first edition books, and even the Wicked Witch’s broom! You’ll also find hands-on exhibits where you can have your photo taken in Oz with an ‘Immersive Van Gogh’-style 360-degree projection, or take a stroll down the museum’s very own Yellow Brick Road.

26 – Head to one of the rocket launch viewpoints

rocket launch viewpoints in Cape Canaveral, Florida

Dubbed the ‘Space Coast’ for good reason, Cape Canaveral is the perfect place to check out a rocket launch and witness the roar and exhilaration of thousands of gallons of burning fuel!

There are numerous viewing spots along Highway A1A, with most people heading to Playalinda Beach, Jetty Park, or Cocoa Beach Pier to watch the action.

If you want to avoid the crowds (and get a little closer to the launch site), try one of the many parks and nature reserves in Canaveral National Seashore – just remember that you’ll need a permit to enter these areas. Or, if you want to combine the experience with a dose of education, the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in Titusville is a solid choice.

With a host of beaches to choose from (Playalinda and Cocoa Beach being two of the most well-known), great surfing conditions are easy to find. With long, consistent waves that make for an enjoyable ride, it’s no wonder that the Space Coast is a favorite spot for surfers from all over the globe – it is, after all, the stomping ground of many a pro including multiple-time world champion Kelly Slater.

If you want more of a local feel, away from the tourists near the infamous Ron Jon surf shop, then either of the Streets near downtown Cocoa Beach or 2nd Light Beach are great options; offering excellent breaks without the crowds.

The break most synonymous with all of East Coast surfing is Sebastian Inlet (a beautiful 45-minute drive south from Cocoa Beach); closer to home, Tables Beach is a crowd favorite, likewise the mediums tides of Indialantic Boardwalk.

But, if you’re not sure where to start, there are plenty of surf schools in the Cocoa Beach area that can provide lessons and rentals for surfers of all levels.

If you’re planning on visiting Cape Canaveral Florida, there are a few things you should know.

This area is known for its beautiful beaches and Kennedy Space Center, but there is so much more to see and do here!

In This Blog Post – We will discuss 10 things you should know before your trip. So, whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned space tourist, read on for the inside scoop on Cape Canaveral Florida.

Table of Contents

1. Are Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center the Same?

About Cape Canaveral Florida

Cape Canaveral is not the same as Kennedy Space Center  (KSC). KSC is located on Merritt Island, which is divided from Cape Canaveral by the Banana River.

The historic Apollo launchpads, as well as modern NASA SpaceX Falcon Heavy rockets, take off from KSC.

  • Banana River Fishing

2. What Is Special about Cape Canaveral?

Cape Canaveral is home to the famous Kennedy Space Center, as well as beautiful beaches and many other attractions.

This area has a rich history, dating back to the early days of space exploration.

crime rates in Cape Canaveral explained

In recent years, Cape Canaveral has become a popular tourist destination for those interested in space travel and exploration.

Cape Canaveral KSC is of great importance for rocket launches as it is on the eastern Atlantic seaboard and there it is a perfect launch site. In the event of a mission abort due to technical failure, the rocket, having pitched downrange over the ocean will cause no harm to the public.

So too is it an easy return to Cape Canaveral Port for Atlantic based SpaceX drone ships with reclaimed boosters such as A Shortfall of Gravitas (ASOG) and Just Read the Instructions (II).

The weather is also ideal for launches, with a seasonal average temperature of 81 degrees Fahrenheit and very little rain.

3. When’s the Next Launch at Kennedy Space Center?

launch from Cape Canaveral distance recommended

We are constantly updating the launch schedule to be as accurate as possible.

The Next Rocket Launch from KSC: Monday, Nov. 14 | NASA SLS Artemis I – read more here

4. Is Playalinda Beach Open During Launches?

Whether Playalinda Beach is open during launches will vary. Playalinda is a National Park and so falls under the control of the National Parks Service.

The beach is open from dawn to dusk all year round, therefore the beach is closed for after-dark launches from Kennedy Space Center.

Playalinda is generally open for daytime launches but can have restricted access, in particular when launchpad 39A is in use.

This is the closest to the launch site to the beach. For further information read our extensive article on the best places to view a rocket launch from Cape Canaveral.

5. Is Cape Canaveral a Town?

No, Cape Canaveral is classified as a city and includes Titusville and Melbourne within its metropolitan area. The city also includes the magnificent Port Canaveral.

Does Cape Canaveral have a high crime rate?

Cape Canaveral is home to the Kennedy Space Center, which is why it is often associated with space travel and exploration.

But there is so much more to this coastal city than just rockets and astronauts!

6. When did Cape Canaveral Change to Cape Kennedy?

After the assassination of JFK in 1963, Cape Canaveral was changed to Cape Kennedy. The name reverted to Cape Canaveral in 1973, and the site has since changed designation a few times but is now called Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is the most popular tourist destination in Cape Canaveral.

Here, you can take a tour of the historic launchpads, see a rocket launch, and learn about the history of space exploration.

7. Is Cape Canaveral part of NASA?

The Kennedy Space Center is operated by NASA, but the city of Cape Canaveral is not affiliated with the space agency.

8. Is Cape Canaveral a Nice Area and is it worth visiting?

Cape Canaveral in Brevard County is a beautiful coastal city with miles of white sand beaches, lush vegetation, and plenty of things to do along the Canaveral National Seashore.

Traveling to Cape Canaveral, the closest airport is  Melbourne (MLB)  (20.06 mi), and also the nearby airport in Orlando, Orlando International Airport (MCO) (42.63 mi).

10. Cape Canaveral Space Center

Most travelers are planning for a visit to Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center, but there is so much more to do in this coastal city.

If you’re looking for some Florida relaxation or want to explore Central Florida’s most popular tourist destinations, then make sure that you plan your itinerary around all of these things!

SpaceX launch recap: Starlink mission Saturday night from NASA's Kennedy Space Center

Launch recap: Scroll down to review live coverage of the Saturday, March 23, liftoff of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center .

It's launch day — following a Friday night scrub!

Welcome to FLORIDA TODAY's Space Team live coverage of tonight’s hours-delayed SpaceX Starlink mission from NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

SpaceX is now targeting 11:09 p.m. EDT — nearly four hours later than originally announced — for its second attempt at launching a Falcon 9 rocket from pad 39A.

Cape Canaveral: Is there a launch today? Upcoming rocket launch schedule for SpaceX, NASA in Florida

This Starlink 6-42 launch attempt comes on the heels of Friday night's postponement , which was announced hours before liftoff amid a dreary weather forecast. The Falcon 9 will deploy a batch of Starlink internet satellites, which are packed inside the fairing atop the 230-foot rocket.

No local sonic booms are expected . After soaring skyward along a southeasterly trajectory, the rocket's first-stage booster will target landing aboard a drone ship out at sea 8½ minutes after liftoff.

SpaceX Falcon 9 booster lands

Update 11:17 p.m.:  The Falcon 9 first-stage booster just landed aboard SpaceX's drone ship Just Read the Instructions out on the Atlantic Ocean, completing its 19th mission.

The drone ship also just notched its 75th landing.

Update 11:09 p.m.:  Despite delays throughout the evening, SpaceX has just launched the Falcon 9 rocket carrying 23 Starlink satellites from KSC.

SpaceX launch webcast begins

Update 11:04 p.m.: SpaceX's launch webcast hosted on X (formerly Twitter) is now posted above, right below the countdown clock.

Liftoff is scheduled in five minutes from KSC.

SpaceX launch countdown timeline

Update 10:53 p.m.:  Here's a behind-the-scenes rundown of SpaceX’s remaining countdown timeline. T-minus:

  • 16 minutes:  Second-stage liquid oxygen loading begins.
  • 7 minutes:  Falcon 9 begins engine chill prior to launch.
  • 1 minute:  Command flight computer begins final prelaunch checks; propellant tank pressurization to flight pressure begins.
  • 45 seconds:  SpaceX launch director verifies “go” for launch.
  • 3 seconds:  Engine controller commands engine ignition sequence to start.
  • 0 seconds:  Liftoff.

SpaceX: All systems and weather 'go'

Update 10:44 p.m.: In a tweet, SpaceX officials announced that "all systems and weather are currently go" for liftoff after this evening's extended delays.

SpaceX Falcon 9 fueling has finally begun

Update 10:34 p.m.: Finally: Falcon 9 fueling procedures are underway at pad 39A, SpaceX just announced.

That means tonight’s Starlink mission is committed to lift off at 11:09 p.m. without any countdown delays, or else the launch must be postponed.

Are worst storms finally blowing offshore?

Update 10:15 p.m.: The National Weather Service's Melbourne station radar loop shows that the fierce red storms that passed near the Cape this evening have moved offshore.

SpaceX's much-delayed 11:09 p.m. liftoff target is less than an hour away. Will the rocket launch?

Storm clouds menace Kennedy Space Center

Update 9:52 p.m.: Shortly before sunset, FLORIDA TODAY Photographer/Videographer Craig Bailey took this photo of an ominous storm cloud looming north of the KSC press site.

SpaceX booster slated to fly 19th mission

Update 9:29 p.m.:  Tonight's mission would mark the 19th flight for this Falcon 9 first-stage booster, SpaceX reported.

The well-traveled booster previously launched GPS III-3, Turksat 5A, Transporter-2, Intelsat G-33/G-34, Transporter-6, Intuitive Machines IM-1 and a dozen Starlink missions, SpaceX reported.

Following stage separation, crews expect the booster to land on the drone ship Just Read the Instructions out on the Atlantic Ocean 8 minutes, 26 seconds after liftoff.

Storms still sweeping north of Cape

Update 8:30 p.m.: National Weather Service radar shows fierce storms continuing to pass north of the Cape — along with potentially poor booster-recovery conditions in the Bahamas.

SpaceX sets lengthy delay: 11:09 p.m.

Update 7:34 p.m.: SpaceX just announced tonight's mission has been pushed back to 11:09 p.m., only 20 minutes before the four-hour launch window elapses.

NWS weather warning north of Cape extended again

Update 7:24 p.m.: For weather watchers, the National Weather Service has again extended that special marine warning just north of the Cape. The warning now elapses at 8:15 p.m. — and the impacts are now more severe than earlier.

Impacts may now include wind gusts topping 40 knots, large hail, possible waterspouts and steep waves.

SpaceX pushes back target to 8:21 p.m.

Update 7:08 p.m.: Is it weather-related? SpaceX crews have pushed back tonight's target liftoff time to 8:21 p.m.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has extended that special marine warning from the Brevard-Volusia county line northward to Flagler Beach by 30 minutes, to 8 p.m.

SpaceX launch prep underway in Brevard

Update 6:50 p.m.: Brevard County Emergency Management officials have activated the agency's launch operations support team ahead of SpaceX’s upcoming Falcon 9 launch.

NWS issues weather warning north of Cape

Update 6:35 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a special marine warning from the Brevard County line northward to Flagler Beach through 7:30 p.m.

Meteorologists warn of potential 34-knot wind gusts, pea-sized hail and steep waves.

Space Force: 75% 'go for launch'

Update 6:17 p.m.: The Space Force's 45th Weather Squadron pegged the odds of "go for launch" weather at 75%.

The squadron's forecast did note a low-to-moderate risk of upper-level wind shear, along with a moderate risk of unfavorable weather and sea conditions for the first-stage booster landing aboard a SpaceX drone ship out at sea.

"On Saturday, the low pressure will be tracking up the Eastern Seaboard, leaving the Spaceport with northwesterly winds and isolated, wrap-around showers. The primary launch weather concerns will be Liftoff Winds and the Cumulus Cloud Rule associated with the isolated showers," the forecast said.

SpaceX targeting Monday rush-hour Falcon 9 launch on Starlink mission from Cape Canaveral

visit to cape canaveral

Rain, wind and thunderstorms scrubbed SpaceX's Friday rocket launch attempt, then held up a Saturday retry by nearly four hours before the Falcon 9 took flight. But sunny skies should prevail for the company's next mission Monday on the Space Coast.

Though SpaceX has yet to make an announcement. Federal Aviation Administration and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency navigational warnings show a 4½-hour launch window for the Starlink 6-46 mission will open Monday from 5 p.m. to 9:31 p.m. EDT.

Monday's evening-rush-hour Falcon 9 rocket liftoff will presumably occur from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Saturday's storm-delayed nighttime launch occurred from SpaceX's other Florida facility: pad 39A at NASA's neighboring Kennedy Space Center.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for mostly sunny skies Monday at the Cape, a high near 76 and east wind around 15 mph, gusting as high as 20 mph.

FLORIDA TODAY's Space Team live coverage will kick off about 90 minutes before liftoff at  floridatoday.com/space . The Falcon 9 rocket's first-stage booster will return to Earth for a drone ship landing near the Bahamas, so no Central Florida sonic booms should occur.

Cape Canaveral: Is there a launch today? Upcoming rocket launch schedule for SpaceX, NASA in Florida

Monday's SpaceX mission will precede Thursday's historic 16th and final launch of a Delta IV Heavy triple-core rocket . United Launch Alliance has yet to announce a target time for this NROL-70 national security mission from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

The National Reconnaissance Office and the Space Force’s Space Systems Command are partnering on the NROL-70 classified payload.

These SpaceX and ULA missions would mark the 20th and 21st orbital launches from the Space Coast this year . The projected pace thus far during 2024 would topple last year's all-time record of 72 launches.
