intrepid travel northern lights escape

Operated by Intrepid Travel

Back in 1989, two guys from Melbourne, Australia by the names of Darrell and Manch set off on an adventure to the other side of the world. They travelled to Africa and without air conditioning on their modified truck, they filled it with supplies, some beer, a bunch of aviator sunglasses, and some friends. On that trip, they came up with the idea that perhaps others may be interested in this style of travel too. Just like that, Intrepid was born. Intrepid has come a long way since then, now giving over 100,000 travelers a year the opportunity to experience small group travel across all 7 continents. They use local transport, sleep in local accommodation from Cambodian stilt houses to Moroccan riads, and employ 100% local leaders. With three different travel styles including basix, original and comfort, themes ranging from cycling trips to family holidays, and itineraries crafted with the perfect balance of must-see sights and free time, Intrepid caters to every type of traveller no matter their age, budget or travel style. The company has grown but their mission remains the same: to change the way people see the world through sustainable, experience-rich travel

Frequently Asked Questions

As a naturally occurring phenomenon, the appearance of the Northern Lights is notoriously difficult to predict any further in advance than about two hours before it happens. So much is dependent on solar activity, we can accurately predict neither when they will occur nor how frequently. Every endeavour will be made on this trip to see the Northern Lights however this is not guaranteed. That being said, this tour is packed with plenty of other amazing and unforgettable experiences! You will have the opportunity to bathe in the geothermal Blue Lagoon, see the mighty Seljalandsfoss waterfall and take on a glacier hike.

Unfortunately we do not have any customised trips available in this region. The trips available are set itineraries and group tours.

We can arrange an extra night in a single room per person, per night with taxes included. Please contact us to arrange this.

An airport transfer is not included in the tour cost but can be easily arranged and added to the booking.

The minimum age for Intrepid trips is usually 15.

This tour only runs at optimal times during the year to ensure that the skies are dark enough to see the lights to their full effect. The sighting is heavily dependent on the cloud cover and the activity of the Aurora. This is often down to chance, and any time of the year that this tour runs offers an equal chance of a sighting. September and October are the months we would recommend to anybody who prefers to avoid the extreme cold of an Arctic winter. November and December are very much a time of change in the Arctic and heralds the arrival of the first major snows of the winter. The snow does bring quite a bit of cloud cover but the shorter days also bring darker skies which increases the amount of time during which the Aurora might be visible. January to March are probably the three most popular months for Aurora hunting because they bring long dark nights and plenty of snow to play in during the daylight hours while you wait for darkness to fall!

Yes the price is based on twin share; solo travellers can also book this tour. All solo travellers will be paired with another traveller on tour of similar age and gender.

Tour operator, intrepid travel, the intrepid travel experience.

If you’re looking for adventure, you’ve come to the right place. For the past 25 years, we’ve been taking small groups of travelers on unforgettable trips around the world. What makes them unforgettable? Take a look for yourself and discover the Intrepid experience.

Our travelers have three styles of tour to choose from: Basix, Original and Comfort. Each has a different level of inclusions and accommodation, but all have unforgettable real life experiences as part of the package. Travellers can also choose themed trips, such as Family, Sailing or Food, to suit their interests.

Our group size has an average of just ten travellers, which allows us to get off the beaten track, use local accommodation and transport, and really get to know the culture. It also ensures we are contributing to the local economy; by choosing local suppliers we were able to keep AUD 60 million in local economies in 2012. We’re also working hard to reduce our carbon footprint and were the first in our sector to introduce carbon offset trips. This, along with our many corporate sustainability activities, has meant we’re one of the travel industry’s leaders in responsible travel.

Why Intrepid?

  •   Small groups - average of 10 people per trip
  •   Sustainability - pioneers for the industry
  •   Local leaders - authentic perspectives
  •   Local transport - get close and personal
  •   Local accommodation - experience real living
  •   Intrepid travelers - like-minded companions

Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its beginnings in 1989. From two university friends, a typewriter and a kitchen desk, it is now a proud member of The Intrepid Group, taking over 100,000 travelers every year.

Intrepid Travel is part of The Intrepid Group of companies, alongside leading small group adventure companies Peregrine, Urban Adventures and PEAK DMC.

Despite growing into a global business with over 1,000 staff based all over the world and over 800 different trips across every continent, we’ve remained devoted to the same grassroots values and responsible travel philosophies that we had at the very beginning.

On every trip we operate and in every interaction we have with a client, supplier or local, we live our core values everyday:

  • Integrity – Doing the right thing
  • Responsible – Think global, act local
  • Growth – Stakeholders in our own success
  • Innovation – Thriving on new ideas and embracing change
  • Fun – It’s engrained into who we are and what we do
  • Passion – We are inspired by the work we do and the trips we offer

For this Northern Lights Escape tour getting the required visa(s) is the responsibility for each individual traveller, as visa requirements vary depending on your nationality. We recommend to check with your local embassies representing the countries that you are traveling to, as part of this itinerary.

  • The Northern Lights (also known as the Aurora Borealis) are a natural display of coloured lights in the night sky of the northern hemisphere. While Northern Light displays can never be guaranteed, as they are a natural phenomenon, you have a higher chance of seeing them in locations at high latitudes, such as Iceland. Please note that weather conditions and overall activity can affect visibility.
  • Iceland can be an expensive destination in many ways, from museum entrance fees to visiting a cafe, but especially in terms of eating out. To provide you with an example, a main meal outside of Reykjavik can be around the ISK 4,500 mark. Your leader will be able to advise on how to save money. In remote areas the only option for dinner will be at the guesthouse we are staying at. Please stock up on food at a supermarket prior to arrival if you would like to opt out eating at the guesthouses' restaurants.
  • Iceland can be extremely cold at this time of year. Please bring appropriate clothing for adverse weather conditions. There may be the rare occasion where your leader has to alter the itinerary and activities due to the weather which can cause roads being blocked, sites closure etc. Your leader will discuss the necessary changes and alternatives where possible.
  • Due to the remote locations we visit, there are a few long drives on this trip. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the scenery and spend some time getting to know the other members of your group.
  • Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 is no longer mandatory on departures after 1st January 2023. Nonetheless, all travellers are strongly advised to be vaccinated as a safety measure to protect themselves and others on the tour. This policy excludes all Polar trips and select adventure cruises, where testing and vaccination are required.
  • Also, proof of vaccination may still be required at specific entry points or by the airlines. Therefore, please make sure to check all the travel requirements carefully before travelling.

This trip incorporates the following COVID-19 measures:

  • This tour has received the World Travel and Tourism Council’s Safe Travels stamp, which provides travellers with assurance that COVID-19 health and hygiene global standardised protocols have been adopted.
  • Hygiene and safety guidelines will be followed to ensure your well being is looked after during travels.

The Northern Lights are usually most frequent during November to March, however, it is impossible to predict with certainty. For more on the best time to visit Iceland, please see our related article.

Culture and customs.

A love of nature permeates every level of Norwegian society, from the freedom to camp on public land (known as the right to roam) to the old Norwegian joke about being born with skis on their feet. A history of farming and an enduring Viking culture that valued strength and hardiness has produced a society unified around values like independence, an active life and simple pleasures.

Speaking of simple pleasures, if you’re in Norway you’ll come across a phrase that has no direct translation in English: ‘koselig’ (pronounced coosh-ly). While ‘koselig’ means something different to each person, it’s best understood as the mental feeling of cosiness and contentment that accompanies wholesome activities, like if a happy sigh was a feeling. You may also come across the term ‘friluftsliv’, which refers to the pure delight of splendid natural scenery, fresh air and an active lifestyle. This is perhaps why the country continuously tops the ‘world’s happiest’ lists.

Travellers may find that the locals seem a little shy or reserved at first. Generally speaking, small talk isn’t as big a part of social interaction as it is in places like the USA, Australia and Canada. Don’t take it personally – once you get to know a local, you’ll likely find them as helpful and kind as people anywhere.

History and government

The first people moved here some 10,000 years ago after rising temperatures created the perfect conditions for fishing communities to hunt the coastline’s blubber-rich marine life.

While the Viking Age is the most famous part of Norway’s history, it was actually a fairly short period. Scandinavian warriors travelled around the world to plunder, colonise and build alliances from around AD800 to AD1060. As a result of these invasions into   Scotland , England and Normandy, Saint Olaf unified the country for the first time under Christianity.

In the 14th century Norway was joined with   Denmark   through a royal marriage. Danish became the official language although Norway retained a strong sense of national identity. It was then given to   Sweden   in the early 19th century before finally achieving independence in 1905.

Twentieth century

Norway declared itself neutral during WWII but that didn’t stop the Nazis invading and occupying the country as a strategic military stronghold. Norway quickly recovered once the war ended in terms of infrastructure and economy, though the head of the government-in-exile did not. Vidkun Quisling, who encouraged Norwegians to submit to Nazi rule, was executed for treason in 1945. Fun fact: the word ‘quisling’ is still a colloquial term for ‘traitor’ in Norway.

Perhaps the most significant event in Norway during the 20th century was the discovery of a wealth of natural resources in the late 1960s. The extraction and export of oil and gas quickly became Norway’s dominant industry and continues to provide most of the country’s considerable wealth.

Norway today enjoys a high standard of living with political power generally held by either centre-left or centre-right parties. The country is renowned worldwide for its free and independent press and strong democracy.

Eating and drinking

Traditional Norwegian cuisine is simple, hearty and designed to keep you warm during those freezing winters. While the classic meat and potato offerings may not be the most exciting, they are plenty satisfying, and you’ll find diverse cuisine options from around the world in Norway’s larger cities. Many travellers to Norway are concerned about how much money they will have to budget for meals during their trip, and while it’s true that eating and drinking in Norway can be expensive compared to other parts of Europe, there are a few things you can do to make your meals more affordable.

Budget-friendly tips for eating and drinking in Norway

Picnic like a local

Eating outside in parks and squares is incredibly popular during the summer in Norway. You’ll even see locals with single-use barbecues grilling meat in the open during the warmer months, which is totally legal. These disposable grills are cheap, but they aren’t great for the environment, so we recommend stocking up on fruit, vegetables, lunch meats and bread for an eco-friendly picnic.

Drink the tap water

With some of the best-tasting tap water in the world, there’s no need to splurge on bottled stuff. Bring a reusable bottle and fill it up each day. It’s better for your wallet and the environment.

Steer clear of sweets

A huge sugar tax means buying chocolate or candy is expensive everywhere in Norway. Junk heads may want to shore up some luggage space for treats, or simply prepare mentally.

Must-try food and drink in Norway

  • Kjottkaker Basically a fried meatball, but flatter and with no breadcrumbs. Kjottkaker are ubiquitous in Norway so you won’t have to look to hard to find them. They’re delicious, filling and widely available – what more could you want?
  • Farikal Norway’s national dish is a perfect warmer for freezing winters (or even chilly spring or autumn nights). Simmered with cabbage and mild spices, pieces of lamb or mutton become fall-off-the-bone soft in this tasty and rustic meal.
  • Linie Aquavit This Norwegian brand of aquavit – a botanical vodka – is aged in oak casks during a cruise. Here’s the reasoning given on their website: ‘It all started back in 1805, when the Norwegian trade family, Lysholm, shipped potato aquavit to the East Indies. Here people were totally uninterested in buying it, so the aquavit was sailed back to Norway. On its arrival in 1807, it was discovered that the sea voyage had vastly improved the taste.’
  • Brown cheese Made by simmering a by-product of the cheese-making process (whey), then sliced and served on bread or crackers, sweet and salty brown cheese is an iconic lunch or breakfast accompaniment.

Plant-based options

Vegetarians and vegans will have nothing to be concerned about in cities like Olso and Bergen, but we recommend stocking up on food in a supermarket if you’re travelling outside of the major cities, just in case you have trouble finding options on restaurant menus. Travelling with a local who speaks the language makes this all a lot easier. If you travel with Intrepid, you’ll have a local leader who can help you decipher menus and recommend plant-based choices.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with   Sweden ,   Russia   and   Finland , Norway occupies the northern corner of the Scandinavian Peninsula, with the North Sea, Norwegian Sea and Barents Sea hugging the rugged northern, southern and western sides of the country.

Swaths of Norway sit within the Arctic Circle, including the popular mainland city of Tromso and the Svalbard archipelago. Due to its proximity to the   Arctic , large parts of Norway experience a subarctic marine climate, with cold winters and cool summers, as well as midnight sun and the Northern Lights.

Norway possesses more than 50,000 islands. These protect the rest of the country from North Atlantic storms, which is useful given the country’s proximity to the   Arctic . With a total of less than 10 per cent of the land suitable for growing crops, things are already tough enough.

The country's western fjord system is perhaps its most well-known landmark – or series of more than 1000 landmarks, to be accurate. Formed by retreating or melting glaciers, these deep ravines are now a symbol of Norway’s beauty and the country’s leading tourist attraction.

In a country where the great outdoors is a way of life, you’ll find less opportunities to buy trinkets and mementos in Norway than in other places. That being said, there are a couple of keepsakes and gifts to look out for while you’re there, namely items that represent the weird and wonderful folklore and traditions of this Scandinavian nation.

Solje jewellery

This silver jewellery is meant to keep the wearer safe from evil and monsters. Traditional solje jewellery comes in the form of brooches and necklaces that can be attached to bunad (folk) costumes. Does it work? Well, do you see any trolls around? Exactly.

Items adorned with rosemaling – delicate, floral folk art – make perfect gifts or decorative souvenirs. Practised since the mid-18th century, rosemaling emerged when poor, travelling artists and muralists from Norway encountered the elaborate styles popular in Italy and France at the time.

It’s hard to overstate the importance of trolls in Norwegian (and wider Scandinavian) culture and folklore. These humanoid, mountain or forest-dwelling monsters are sometimes huge and sometimes tiny, but almost always up to some kind of mischief and trickery. Troll dolls, troll mugs, troll tea towels, troll underwear (why not?) and more are for sale throughout the country. It may seem a little touristy, but even locals keep figurines of these hideous creatures around the house for luck.

Festivals and events

Did you really think that the descendants of Vikings wouldn't know how to hold a celebration? Thankfully, modern Norwegians are more inclined to celebrate things like music and art, rather than seafaring raids, and these are some of the best:

Oya Festival

A summer festival that usually takes place in Oslo, Oya features artists – both local and international – from a number of genres performing in the great outdoors. This is a classic European music festival with a sustainable twist – you can dance to music powered by renewable energy while munching street food served on edible, biodegradable plates.

Northern Lights Festival

Listen to compositional music performed in Tromso’s historic and modern architectural wonders. Timed to coincide with the Northern Lights (hence the name), this mid to late-winter festival is a stalwart of Tromso’s impressive cultural calendar.

Bergenfest

Bergenfest   is a five-day open-air music festival located in the stone walls of Bergenhaus Fortress in the UNESCO World-Heritage listed city of Bergen. It's one of Norway’s oldest, biggest and boldest music festivals featuring an eclectic lineup of electronic, pop, country, experimental, jazz, blues, rock and more.

Norway travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Norway?

When deciding the best time for you to visit Norway, the main factors to consider are your tolerance for the cold and what you want to see most.

While the joys of the high summer are self-evident – long days! Mild weather! – both international and local tourists flock to Norway’s fjords and hiking trails during June and July. If you want to hike all day, stay up all night (because the sun pretty much doesn’t set) and don’t mind rubbing shoulders with other travellers, this could be the ideal time for you.

Winter in Norway is cold. November, December and January see average daylight temperatures between -1°C and 4°C (30°F and 39°F) with the sun setting in the afternoon. That said, this is the only time of the year that you can glimpse the stunning Northern Lights. Even if you don’t see Aurora Borealis (you’ll have more luck the further north you go), the festivity of Christmas and the snow-covered mountains make winter a magical season to visit.

Spring and autumn are both crisp in terms of temperature. Think about 10°C (50°F) in May and September. These shoulder seasons may offer a good way to split the difference between winter and summer if you can handle a little bit of cold and a little bit of a crowd, but not too much of either. Just be aware that spring is the rainy season and pack accordingly.

Do I need a visa to travel to Norway?

Visas for Denmark , Norway,   Sweden   and   Finland  are not required for passport holders of the European Union,   Australia ,   New Zealand , the   USA   and   Canada   who plan to visit for 90 days or less. Please note that random passport checks occasionally happen at European borders and you will need at least six months validity on your passport to enter the country overland.

All other nationalities should check with the Norwegian embassy or consulate closest to them for information.

Is tipping customary in Norway?

Part of what contributes to Norway’s reputation as an expensive nation for visitors (but not locals) is that most workers, including waitstaff, are paid union-approved liveable wages.

Because of this, tipping in Norway is not commonplace and is generally left up to the discretion of the customer. If the service in a mid- to high-end restaurant is particularly good, feel free to round up the bill.

What is the internet access like in Norway?

Internet access in Norway is fantastic, with almost 100 per cent of the country having access to a connection. In Norway's major cities and towns, travellers will be able to access the internet on their phones with global roaming switched on (be careful of charges) and at cafes and free wi-fi hot spots. Even more remote and rural areas will have internet availability, though in towns like Tromso and Trondheim it may be a slow connection.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Norway?

Mobile phone coverage is generally very good in Norway. If you want to use your mobile phone, ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive (but be aware of the fees this may incur).

What are the toilets like in Norway?

Flushable, Western-style toilets are the standard in Norway.

What will it cost for a...?

Norway's unit of currency is the krone. Prices here are approximate and shown in US dollars for ease of comparison.

Cup of coffee in a cafe = USD 3–4

500 ml beer in a bar = USD 10–13

Takeaway supermarket sandwich = USD 10

Meal in a mid-range restaurant = USD 25–30

Can I drink the water in Norway?

Yes, you can drink the tap water in Norway. In fact, it’s some of the best-tasting tap water in the world so pack a reusable bottle and take advantage. It’s always considered safe to drink unless otherwise marked.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Norway?

Major credit cards are accepted by most large shops and hotels. Smaller vendors may not accept credit cards, so carry enough cash to cover small purchases.

What is ATM access like in Norway?

ATMs are commonly found in Norway's cities and urban areas. Remote regions will have less ATM availability, so prepare accordingly before travelling away from cities.

What is the weather like in Norway?

The climate in Norway is noticeably warmer than what would otherwise be expected at such a high latitude because of the Gulf Stream. Summer temperatures can reach up to 30°C (86°F), even in northern areas, but only for limited periods. The length of the winter and amount of snow varies around the country. There is more snow in the north and the winters are dark; on the southern and western coasts, winters are moderate and rainy, while further inland the temperature can get below -25°C (-13°F). March, April, October and November tend to be the rainiest months. Snow usually starts to fall in October or November in the northern areas (and in higher altitudes) and generally melts by the end of April. The Northern Lights are visible from parts of Norway, with September to April usually presenting the optimal conditions for viewing.

What public holidays are celebrated in Norway?

1 January  New Year’s Day

March/April  Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Monday *

1 May  Labor Day

17 May  Constitution Day

May/June  Ascension Day *

May/June  Whit Sunday and Whit Monday *

25 December  Christmas Day

26 December  Boxing Day

*Please note these dates may vary. See the current list of public holidays in Norway.

Is Norway a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2009 and citizens have had the legal right to self determine their gender since 2016. Norway has strong anti-discrimination laws regarding LGBTQIA+ individuals and public opinion on LGBTQIA+ people is overwhelmingly positive.

You can find visible queer scenes in all the midsize to large cities. Oslo’s is the biggest and the official Oslo tourism website even has a section dedicated to   queer spaces and events   in the city. In other large cities, like Bergen, you’ll find no shortage of LGBTQIA+ friendly spaces, though fewer that cater to specific sexualities and genders.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Norway accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Norway is a fairly accessible destination for people with restricted mobility and other disabilities and is actively working to be more accessible every day. In general, travellers with mobility or other restrictions should be aware that the weather can adversely affect accessible travel in Norway. During December, January and February, snow and ice can make even the most well-maintained sidewalk difficult to navigate.

New buildings are required to be accessible to wheelchair users, however many older buildings may not be accessible. Public buildings like museums that are not totally accessible will often have assistance buttons at their entrances that direct a member of staff to help you enter the building.  Public transport is a mixed bag. While new trams, trains and stations are accessible to wheelchair users, some are not. If you’re travelling on a regional train,   Tourism Norway   recommends calling the train carrier at least 24 hours before your journey to ensure you will be accommodated. The boats that we use for cruising fjords in Norway are accessible to wheelchair users.

Metro trains, trams and buses in Norway are outfitted with PA systems that can be of assistance to travellers with restricted vision. Many trains, buses and trams in major cities will also have screens helpful to travellers with restricted hearing. Travellers who use battery-operated hearing aids should consider bringing a stash of extra batteries or familiarising themselves with the Norwegian equivalent of the batteries their devices need.

If you have a disability and are planning to travel with Intrepid, we recommend speaking with your booking agent about specific concerns that pertain to accessibility.

Is it expensive to travel in Norway?

The perception of Norway as a prohibitively expensive country stops a lot of folks from booking a journey, despite how badly they want to see the country’s incredible landscapes.

For locals, the cost of most goods and services aren’t that expensive relative to wages. However, there is no denying that Norway is more expensive for travellers than many destinations in Europe and will require more thoughtful budgeting than a trip to, say, Romania.

Prices of basic items like metro tickets, beer and takeaway meals will likely be higher than you would normally pay at home. There are, however, ways of making a trip to Norway a little easier on your bank account. Shopping at supermarkets for lunch instead of dining out, travelling with a reusable water bottle and limiting your alcohol consumption are just a few.

Our trips in Norway tend to be light on included meals so that you can decide whether you’d prefer to grab a supermarket sandwich for lunch or sit down to eat somewhere. You’ll also have the benefit of a local leader to help you find deals and a well thought out itinerary, which means less chance for expensive impulse buys.

Embracing friluftsliv, a Norwegian word that loosely translates as a way of life that prioritises time spent in nature, is the best way to reduce the cost of your trip. Basically, if you’re after an adventure where you can eat world-class cuisine all day and party all night, Norway might not be the right destination for you right now. But if you’re interested in unforgettable views, catching sight of the Northern Lights or hiking under the midnight sun, Norway may just be the best travel experience you’ve ever had.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

This would have to be hands down the best tour we've ever been on! We were lucky enough to see the northern lights and it didn't disappoint even after pencilling this tour into our bucket list 10 years ago!! We still got to enjoy everything else Iceland is famous for - waterfalls, beautiful scenery and warm local hospitality. Should have visited sooner!

Incredible Incredible Incredible - Crazy to see the northern lights in person. Well organized, comfortable accommodation, great trip.

Day 1: Reykjavik

Location: reykjavik, accommodation: hotel.

Hallo! Welcome to Iceland. The world's northernmost capital of Reykjavik lies just below the Arctic Circle. The city sees around four hours of sunlight a day in winter and 22 hours or more in summer. Surrounded by volcanic peaks and crystalline ocean, and boasting a vibrant arts and nightlife scene, Reykjavik's contrasts are utterly beguiling. Why not arrive early and head to the National Museum, which depicts the history of Iceland from the 9th century, when the first Vikings from mainland Scandinavia arrived and settled, to the present day, or join locals who gossip and chatter in the Laugardalslaug Geothermal Pool.

Day 2: Golden Circle / Hvolsvollur Area

Location: golden circle / hvolsvollur area, accommodation: guesthouse, meals included: breaksfast.

Depart Reykjavik early this morning and follow the route of the 'Golden Circle'. Visit Þingvellir National Park, the site of Iceland's first parliament, founded in AD930, and a geological wonder where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart. If you notice a big ridge of water in the landscape, you’re probably looking at the Silfra fissure. Next, head to Iceland's Geysir geothermal area, where you'll see the Strokkur geyser shoot water 30 metres into the air. Be spellbound by the immense beauty and sheer power of the Gullfoss Waterfall, also know as Golden Falls, before continuing on to the Hvolsvollur Valley, where you'll spend the night on an Icelandic farm that has been converted into a guesthouse. Far away from the city lights, the guesthouse is an ideal Northern Lights base. If the skies are clear tonight, why not take a stroll out into the snow and look skywards for the dancing green lights. Included Activities: - Golden Circle - Thingvellir National Park - Golden Circle - Strokkur Geysir - Golden Circle - Gullfoss Waterfall Optional Activities: - Fludir - Secret Lagoon

Day 3: South Coast / Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Location: south coast / jokulsarlon glacier lagoon.

Start the day with a trip to the eerily beautiful Skógafoss waterfall, one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland. Skógafoss is a giant of a waterfall, 25 metres wide and also dropping down 60 metres. You can get up close and feel its power, and also climb a (long) windy set of stairs up to a stunning viewpoint. On a sunny day you should be able to spot a rainbow or two in the spray. Continue along Iceland's South Shore to take in more of the country’s renowned natural wonders. From the stepping-stone rock formations of Reynisdrangar, the promontory of Dyrhólaey, and the night black sand beach of Reynisfjara, this is one of the country's most scenic regions. En route you will pass the lava of the Laki eruption of 1782 to 1783. In the afternoon, you will visit the famous Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, a stunning sea of floating icebergs whose blue contrast with the charcoal coloured sand of the beach. Stop for the night at a farm stay on the South Coast. Weather permitting, there will be another opportunity to step outside and witness the natural wonders of the Northern Lights tonight. Included Activities: - Jokulsarlon - Glacier Lagoon - Skogafoss - Waterfall Visit - South Coast - Dyrholaey Viewpoint

Day 4: Vatnajokull Glacier / Vik

Location: vatnajokull glacier / vik.

Today you'll take a walk on Europe's biggest ice cap – Vatnajokull – which has around 30 glaciers flowing out from it. No experience is necessary to partake in the hike. It’s sobering to think that the glacier is retreating due to rising world temperatures, and in some years the glacier may be gone. Alternatively, if you would like to opt out, just embark on a hike to the glacier's tongue or return to the glacier lagoon at Jokulsarlon or Fjallsarlon. If you prefer a relaxing morning you can explore the surroundings of the farmstay and head to the Thorbergur Centre. Later on today, journey on to the black sand seaside town of Vik. With the sea on one side and high cliffs on the other, this dramatically positioned quaint little village is Iceland's most southerly mainland settlement. Included Activities: - Vatnajokull - Glacier Hike

Day 5: Reykjavik

This morning we make our way to the beautiful waterfall of Seljalandsfoss, and then back to Reykjavik. Upon arrival take a short guided walk of Reykjavik to get an enhanced appreciation of the city around its landmark attractions and points of interest. Visit the old harbour, the city center and the famous Hallgrimskirkja church. Iceland's capital has an eclectic arts and music scene, an abundance of quirky cafes and a laid-back vibe. Perhaps browse some of the city's great art galleries. If you haven't had enough of the Northern Lights yet, you could head out of town to chase them again this evening, or while away the hours with a soak in the geothermal waters of the famous Blue Lagoon. Whatever you choose, tonight perhaps gather together your fellow Icelandic adventurers and celebrate the end of this Northern Lights Escape. Included Activities: - Reykjavik - Leader-led walking tour Optional Activities: - Reykjavik - Settlement Exhibition - Reykjavik - Saga Museum - Reykjavik - Whales of Iceland Museum - Reykjavik - Maritime Museum - Reykjavik - Harpa Concert Hall - Free - Reykjavik - Perlan Museum

Day 6: Reykjavik

Today is departure day and time to say 'sjaumst'. As there are no activities planned, you are able to depart the hotel at any time. Check out time is at midday. If you are departing later, you can arrange to store your luggage at the hotel. If you would like to stay longer, we are happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). Perhaps browse some of the city's great art galleries. If you feel like something more active, book yourself on a Silfra Fissure snorkelling adventure, where you’ll discover this underwater ridge with water visibility of up to 120 metres. Optional Activities: - Reykjavik - Silfra Fissure Snorkelling Day Trip inc return transfer from Reykjavik - Nauthólsvík - Thermal Beach - Free - Reykjavik - Lava Tunnel Tour - Reykjanes Peninsula - Blue Lagoon inc return transfer

However, this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.
  • OCCASIONAL ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION

The Northern Lights (also known as the Aurora Borealis) are a natural display of coloured lights in the night sky of the northern hemisphere. While Northern Light displays can never be guaranteed, as they are a natural phenomenon, you have a higher chance of seeing them in locations at high latitudes, such as Iceland. Please note that weather conditions and overall activity can affect visibility. Iceland can be an expensive destination in many ways, from museum entrance fees to visiting a cafe, but especially in terms of eating out. Iceland can be extremely cold at this time of year. Please bring appropriate clothing for adverse weather conditions. There may be the rare occasion where your leader has to alter the itinerary and activities due to the weather which can cause roads being blocked, sites closure etc. Your leader will discuss the necessary changes and alternatives where possible. Due to the remote locations we visit, there are a few long drives on this trip. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the scenery and spend some time getting to know the other members of your group.

Reviews of this Operator

North american adventure.

This was my first international solo trip, but I never felt “alone” - there was always someone to go shopping, hike, or grab a quick bite with. The itinerary was a great balance between organized activities, while still allowing free time for exploring. Each location was unique and charming in its own way. Spending the night in the holy city of Moulay Idriss and wandering the winding streets of Chefchaouen were especially memorable. Thank you Mustapha and Intrepid for an incredible adventure!

Cambodia Discovery

The overall experience was fantastic. V good tour leader. All places visited had something special to do or see. I would book a tour with this company again. Only one negative tour hub is not I repeat not available to contact direct by phone.

Explore Southern Africa

Best trip ever was, 2 things I didn't like the black mamba stop was wasting day and village ,so 2 night I think was just wasting, I could do 2 days in Kruger, and one more night in delta

Amazing Guatemala and beyond tour with Intrepid

Did Guatemala and beyond trip in November 22. It was amazing, we were so well looked after by our guide Aura. She was very knowledgeable and during our bus trips she gave us the history of the 4 countries. The border crossings can be tricky but handled very well by our guide. We saw all the most interesting and beautiful places. The hotels were lovely comfortable colonial style. I will travel with intrepid again

Central American Journey

Very enjoyable, good paced Tour. Tour Leader, Choko was helpful, knowledgeable and extremely informative.

Wonderful Croatian tour

Our tour guide,Tamara, was the highlight of our Explore Croatia tour. She was knowledgeable, organized, and so kind and fun. Croatia is a beautiful country. I loved the people, the scenery, the food, the history. I hope to go back one day. Intrepid was perfect for me. There was group time and there was plenty of free time. It wasn’t a luxury tour but all of our accommodations were clean and safe. The dinner in Hvar was SO special!

One Week In Costa Rica

The trip was amazing, everything was well planned out & there wasn't any issues. The tour guide was very friendly and made the experience fun. During the trip I didn't have to worry about safety as we were never put in harms way. I would definitely recommend & do again.

North Morocco Adventure

Touring the beautiful North of Morocco I learned far more than I’d anticipated in this 9 day tour. Interesting sights to see, with knowledgeable local guides, this tour provides a great balance of exposure to a different culture with ample time for relaxation. Chefchaouen is an absolute highlight, & not a place many Morocco trips of this kind go to. Loved it!

Essential Morocca

Essential Morocco was an absolute dream. Every single day had such informative walking tours and tours of local facilities. Whether it was dinner with a local family or visiting a pottery factory, I learned so much about Moroccan culture. The accommodations were safe and I felt secure the entire 11 days. This trip wouldn’t have been the same without one person. That person is Youssef. If you are coming to Morocco with Intrepid and you don’t request Youssef, you’re doing it wrong. Words cannot describe how incredible of a guide he is. There were 3 of us on our trip of 18-29 year olds and he made us all feel so welcome and safe all the time. Whether that is cracking jokes on long drives or giving us the itinerary for the next day, Youssef ensured we felt respected and seen.

Cambodia Adventure

Absolutely superb leader - knowledgeable. fun, safety conscious. Group of 15 travellers from 5 countries who bonded into a solid team. In addition to a fantastic itinerary, our leader’s love of karaoke made the trip unforgettable. It even inspired a song written as a tribute to him.

I traveled beyond the Arctic Circle to see the Northern Lights. Here are 4 things to know before you go.

  • I traveled north of the Arctic Circle to a tiny village in Finland for a chance to see the northern lights.
  • I booked a tour as far north as I could afford for the best chance of seeing the colorful auroras.
  • The location made viewing the northern lights easier, but they were different than I expected.

Insider Today

In February, I finally checked off one of my top bucket list items — seeing the aurora borealis, better known as the northern lights.

The auroras occur when charged solar particles from the sun interact with the Earth's upper atmosphere, resulting in an array of colorful lights beaming from the planet's poles. They occur year-round but can only be seen in winter months during the long polar nights.

I journeyed all the way to Finland's northernmost municipality, Utsjoki, about 280 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The trek required two plane rides from New York to Ivalo, Finland, via Helsinki, plus a two-hour drive deep into the snow-covered Lapland.

The secluded village is home to Aurora Holidays , the tour company I used for my trip. I paid about $2,000 total, which included guides, full room and board, a village tour, reindeer feeding, a king crab fishing trip in Norway, and dog sledding — though prices have increased since I booked. Flights on Finnair were another $1,000.

Aurora Holidays boasts a 100% success rate over five years of seeing the auroras thanks to a lack of light pollution in the northern location — and, fortunately, the streak continued on my trip.

Here are four things to know when planning a trip to see the aurora lights and why I recommend getting as far north as possible to maximize your chances — even if it means facing bone-chilling temperatures and relying on a little bit of luck.

Location, location, location

While recent environmental phenomena have made the northern lights visible in places as far south as England and Denmark, the aurora borealis are best viewed within the Article Circle.

The far north is hard to reach, though, and popular viewing spots like Fairbanks, Alaska, Tromsø, Norway, and Canada's Northwest Territories sit below the 66° 34' N latitude that defines the region.

Plus, these often-crowded tourist destinations have light pollution that requires people to venture out of the city into darker areas to see the lights.

Utsjoki, however, is so remote that it offers complete darkness during the long polar nights. Even better, my accommodation was perfectly situated facing north across Lapland — meaning I could see the auroras from my cabin porch.

"A lot of people don't know that for the highest possibilities to see the lights, location matters," Aurora Holiday's owner, Tiina Salonen, told me during the tour. "The rule of thumb is that the further north you travel, the less [solar] activity you need to have lights in the sky."

Related stories

Other places within the Arctic Circle, like Abisko National Park in Sweden or Ilulissat, Greenland, are also good viewing spots.

Pack for below-zero temperatures

During my trip, the temperature reached -8°F, which is even colder than what I experienced in Antarctica . Fortunately, my previous polar expedition taught me how to pack.

I opted for a merino wool base layer from REI, which I prefer due to its moisture-wicking abilities . I also wore a fleece pullover and a Kathmandu puffer as my mid-layers and a 600-fill jacket as my shell. I also wore snow pants, ski gloves, wool socks, a fleece buff, a beanie, and hiking boots.

All of that combined, I was easily warm enough to stand outside under the lights. I also recommend bringing hand and foot warmers if you plan to do other winter activities like snowshoeing or snowmobiling.

One thing to remember about going to extremely remote places like northern Lapland is how far you are away from a proper hospital — the closest to Utsjoki being a few hour's drive, according to Tiina. Wearing the right clothes to prevent frost bite or illness is important, but it wouldn't hurt to get travel insurance , too — just in case.

The vibrant colors that appear in photos are not what humans see

Not every color of the northern auroras is visible to the naked eye. During my trip, I could clearly see streaks of green and white, but the intensity and array of colors were more vivid in photos taken on my iPhone.

Tiina explained this is because cameras can take in more light than a human's nighttime vision can, therefore allowing it to capture otherwise invisible colors, like pink, red, and purple.

I'll admit that the auroras were much fainter than I expected, but that didn't take away from the beauty. Nevertheless, some people may be disappointed it isn't the extravagant Disney-like display social media sometimes makes it seem.

Seeing the lights takes a little bit of luck

During my six-day, five-night tour in Utsjoki, we only saw the auroras once — which is the reality of lights chasing, and why I booked a longer vacation to better my odds of seeing them.

That night was perfectly clear, and the solar activity was relatively strong, allowing the beautiful green beams to dance across the sky. The other nights, however, were too cloudy to see anything.

"The lights are there, but if it is super cloudy — we can't, of course, see them," Tiina told me. I noticed this when I was further south in Ivalo before and after the tour in Utsjoki. I couldn't see the auroras either night I was there due to the clouds, even though the online tracker said they were out.

Sometimes tour companies like Tiina's can drive around to find pockets where the auroras are visible, but it's not always possible — which makes seeing the lights a roll of the dice and why I now warn people to manage their expectations before booking a trip.

"Even here in Utsjoki, we cannot guarantee the lights — after all, it is a natural phenomenon, and Mother Nature is in charge," Tiina said.

These Are the Most Popular Destinations to See Northern Lights This Year, According to Expedia

Remote locations with little light pollution are key for peak colors, Expedia said.

Catching the glorious colors of the northern lights in the night sky takes planning, patience, and a dose of luck. But the one factor that can best elevate your chances for a spectacular spotting is going to the right place. So as part of Expedia’s Northern Lights Guide , the travel booking site has revealed its top 10 trending northern lights destinations.

Based on annual growth of searches, the top destination expected to be the most popular for lights-chasing travelers is Lapland, Finland, which saw a staggering 370 percent growth.

In fact, the entire Scandinavian country was a top choice for Americans with a 215 percent growth from 2022 to 2023, especially for popular aurora-hunting sites, Rovaniemi and Inari. Those looking to save should hone in on October. Not only is it the beginning of the late September to late March peak period, but Lapland hotels average $216 per night, which is $250 less a night than in December.

In second place was Churchill, Canada, which had a 110 percent growth in searches. But it wasn’t the nation’s only city on the list. Banff claimed the fifth spot with an 80 percent growth, and Jasper in the seventh spot with a 70 percent growth.

The third and fourth spots went to a pair of Norwegian cities, Alta — the world’s northernmost city — with 100 percent growth, and Narvik with 90 percent. With the aurora season running from fall to spring here, the most strategic times tend to be March, April, September, and October, Expedia said.

Kalfafell, Iceland, tied Banff for the fifth place spot, also with 80 percent growth, while the United Kingdom’s Isle of Skye came in eighth with 75 percent growth.

Finally, two Swedish cities rounded out the list, with Abisko with 65 percent growth and Kiruna with 55 percent.

While no U.S. destinations made the top 10, several did also see more interest. Searches for Michigan, where peak months are April, October, and November went up 20 percent, as did Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota, near the Canadian border, which shows its best lights in fall and winter. And of course popular northern lights-chasing state, Alaska, with a lengthy season from late August through mid-April saw a 15 percent growth.

Expedia's all-encompassing guide also includes the best places to stay, key times to go, and tips for getting the best northern lights photos to capture the experience.

“Patience is key and experimenting with your camera settings is the secret sauce to capturing the Northern Lights,” nature photographer Dave Sandford said in the Expedia release, shared with Travel + Leisure . “That said, don’t forget to savor the moment. It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve been fortunate to see them in person, I always make a point to put the camera down and lose myself in the extraordinary experience of the Northern Lights.”

Cuba Highlights

8 days | historic havana to colonial trinidad, and all the mojitos in between.

Cuba_Havana_vintage_car

City, countryside and dazzling Caribbean coast – take an eight-day adventure straight to the heart of Cuba. Set off from the charming capital of Havana, where old-time American cars, wafts of cigar smoke and laidback vibes permeate the streets. Visit a local tobacco farm in Vinales, experience the colonial charisma of Trinidad, and immerse yourself with the history, music and mojitos of a country caught in a bygone era. With plenty of time to swim, snorkel, cycle and hike, this adventure combines Cuba’s old-world charm with some seriously scenic vistas in a jam-packed itinerary.

Trip overview

  • Be intrigued by the colourful streets and eclectic history of Cuba's capital as your knowledgeable local leader takes you on a casual walking tour of Old Havana.
  • Venture to Cuba’s charming countryside as you hit rural Vinales. Visit a local tobacco farm and immerse in the stunning nature in Vinales.
  • Wander the cobblestone streets alongside cowboys and farmers in Trinidad, passing by some of the best-preserved colonial buildings in Cuba. Plus, you’ll take part in a rum tasting – muy bueno!
  • Pay your respects at the mausoleum of Che Guevara and receive a fascinating insight into the rise and fall of the charismatic and highly celebrated Cuban revolutionary.
  • The guesthouses (casas) we use are much nicer than your average Cuban dwelling and each room is unique. Regardless of where you stay, power cuts and breaks in hot water supply are sometimes unavoidable, as in any developing country – but we believe that this is all a part of the local experience. To help set your expectations correctly, please read the ‘Accommodation’ section of the Essential Trip Information.
  • Luxuries such as air conditioning, plush pillows, and fly screens, are often scarce. Part of the experience here is learning to appreciate everyday Cuban resourcefulness.
  • You might have to save your status updates and photo posts for when you get home, as Internet is hard to find, unreliable and expensive. Treat Cuba as a holiday from social media too!
  • Cuba is different, and that's a big part of its allure. Things don't always go according to plan, and many things don't work the same way as back home. Patience and good humour will go a long way in this beautiful destination.
  • As this trip covers a lot of land, you'll be spending quite a bit of time travelling. It’s all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.

Bienvenido a Cuba! Welcome to Cuba! There are no activities planned until your important welcome meeting at 6 pm. Once you’ve arrived, why not take a stroll in Cuba’s capital, where vintage cars, Neo-Gothic churches and Art Deco theatres come together in a colourful mismatch on the streets. If you have time, you might like to visit Museo de la Revolucion, which focuses on the events leading up to, during and immediately after the Cuban revolution. After your welcome meeting, perhaps dig into some delectable street snacks and join the group for dinner at a local restaurant – your leader will have a few recommendations.

This morning, join your leader on an two-hour walking tour around Old Havana – a district that reflects an eclectic mix of colonial, baroque and neoclassical architecture. Founded in 1519 by the Spanish, this area within Cuba’s capital remains virtually unchanged. Wander through Havana’s oldest square at Plaza de Armas, stroll around the buildings that frame 16th-century Plaza Veija, admire the basilica of San Francisco de Asis and visit the Havana Cathedral with its elaborate baroque facade. After your walking tour, take a taxi to the bus station and head west to Vinales (approximately 4 hours). This charming rural village is your base for the next couple of days, so why not do as the locals do – drink rum and dance the night away.

The rest of the day is yours to soak up the slow, old-world pace of rural Cuba, where donkeys plod along the dirt roads. Be sure to ask your local leader about the Bay of Pigs Invasion – a battle between the USA and Cuban revolutionaries which resulted in the first defeat of a US-backed takeover in Latin America. Che's remains were brought to rest here after they were found in a remote corner of Bolivia in 1997, where he was assassinated by the CIA-backed Bolivian army. The memorial is home to an impressive bronze statue of Che bearing his rifle, and inside the museum you can learn about his amazing life and see photos and exhibits such as his famous black beret. Afterwards, your leader will take you on an orientation walk of the town and point you in the right direction.
