Voyager Estate The Modern Cabernet Sauvignon Bottle Preview

Our fresh take on a contemporary Cabernet. The Modern celebrates what our organically farmed soils produce best. This medium-bodied, red-and-dark-fruited style is what we like to call a ‘serious drink now wine,’ whilst we predict it will age just as well.

Voyager Estate Rosé Bottle Preview

Crafted from a combination of Tempranillo, Merlot and Shiraz fruit, with some skin contact Viognier adding textural complexity. An excellent food wine, but equally delicious as a crisp sundowner.

Voyager Estate Girt By Sea Cabernet Merlot Bottle Preview

Cabernet but not as you know it, early-drinking, juicy and elegant, a nod to the strong coastal influence that defines our distinct style.

Voyager Estate Project Cane Cut Semillon Bottle Preview

The warm dry weather experienced during the 2018 vintage provided the perfect conditions for crafting a Cane Cut Semillon, a vibrant and concentrated dessert wine with a lovely balance of sweetness and acidity.

Voyager Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Bottle Preview

With fantastic ripening towards the end of the growing season, the 2012 vintage produced a cabernet that is looking incredibly bright and youthful. A wine of great structure, complexity and depth, that still has many years of cellaring ahead.

Voyager Estate Shiraz Bottle Preview

An elegant Shiraz with that classic Margaret River energy and drive. Bursting with red berries and rhubarb, with hints of earth and spice. A soft, juicy style that is delicious all year round.

Voyager Estate

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Was so very lucky to be taken for a visit to Voyager Estate by Australian cousins just before Christmas. After a very personalized tasting with guidance from a very knowledgable young lady we had what was one of the best meals I have ever had.... Food was so well prepared and presented, flavours were crisp fresh and oh so satisfying. Voyager wines are among my very favorites and I would very highly recommend a visit to these lovely grounds and this very high quality restaurant to anyone traveling in the Margaret River area. More

Dear alberta_canuckski, Wow, such a glowing review, thank you. The knowledge and professionalism of the team is something we pride ourselves on and your kind words will go a long way to encouraging them to keep up the fantastic work they do! All the best... More

My family and I enjoyed a lovely high tea at the Voyager Estate. They started with delicious sandwiches and followed up with a beautiful selection of sweet treats. It was very peaceful and had a very luxurious feel to it. We really enjoyed the delicious... food and a nice stroll in the beautiful gardens afterwards. Once or twice a helicopter landed on the lawn outside which was also an interesting sight. I expect the high tea/ tastings or lunch can be arranged together with such a helicopter ride. Beautiful place and definitely worth a visit. More

Dear Saskia h Thank you for your review on our high tea, we are delighted you enjoyed your morning with us. We do partner with some external companies that offer helicopter flights. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] for more information. Kind regards... More

If you are seeking a very special dining experience, look no further than Voyager Estate. We chose the 7 course degustation menu (Floris) and accompanying wine flight. To describe our meal as one of the best we've ever had globally would not be doing sufficient... justice to the experience. The whole meal is really a performance that unfolds at a perfect pace, a journey of discovery with each course revealing new delights. Each dish and accompanying wine is introduced first by the presentation of a card that describes the wine and states the dish, followed by expert commentary and explanation from the server. The food is beyond divine - Santi Fernandez is a true artist in every sense of the word and we are so fortunate to have him in WA. Every single dish was imaginative and a taste sensation and presented in a unique and dramatic fashion. Seven courses are effectively ten when the Chef's canapes, bread and petit fours are included, yet we left feeling we'd eaten just the right amount of food. Beyond the superb quality of the food and matching wines, the staff were exceptional. Their service was friendly, informative, generous and faultless. Our whole experience was capped off by the wonderful estate itself; the very well maintained grounds, gardens and buildings. We especially appreciated the comfortable seating in the dining room. As you can tell, we can't speak highly enough about Voyager Estate and it is now our benchmark for all dining experiences. More

Dear Greg R, Thank you for a truly wonderful review of your Restaurant dining experience with us. Our team are in fact overwhelmed by the level of detail and positive feedback you have given on their delivery of the 'Floris' Discovery Menu - this really... More

My wife and I visited Voyager restaurant recently. I have been holding back on writing this review because we have had a number of good, indeed very good, meals there over the last few years and I did not want to "put the boot into"... the restaurant for one bad lapse. However, our most recent experience was not of the same calibre as previous visits and it is worth explaining why. There seemed to be a distinct failure to season the food which had not been the case on prior visits. In plain parlance, the food lacked flavour. it was just painfully bland. I looked over to a table of 10 people who I picked up from conversation were visiting from Singapore where flavour is everything in what they eat. Frankly, as a West Australian, I felt embarrassed that these visitors were being offered food from a supposedly high end venue which was bordering on tasteless. This review is not just to have a whinge and I rarely write reviews of any kind. It is to bring to the chef's attention that this fare, particularly at the prices charged, was unacceptable and won't be encouraging anyone else to come to WA and visit Voyager. Don't forget that everything served is immediately photographed and reviewed for friends and relatives back home whether that be China, Singapore, the UK, Malaysia, Sydney, Melbourne or elsewhere. One of my friends who is a chef in Perth suggested it might be as simple as the chef having a bad hair day or a fight with his girlfriend. Whatever the reason, please lift your game or risk losing the status and patronage you've successfully built up over time. More

Dear mattperth, Sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your most recent dining experience with us. While not consistent with majority of feedback we receive, we will of course take your comments on board. I have complete confidence in the professionalism of our team... More

This was the first weekend opened after CoVid so bookings were needed. When we arrived there was still 20 minutes wait and wine tasting started at $9 upwards per tasting. We decided our time was better spent admiring the rose gardens and grounds. More

Dear Sue J. Thank you for the review. Indeed while we are allowed to open for wine tasting under the Phase 3 WA restrictions, they are required to be seated no standing tastings. We recommend patrons intending to visit Voyager Estate view our website first... More

We did the Origin tasting here which was seated with 6 wines and a cheese plate. It was a very chilled experience with the perfect balance of info and chat and also time by ourselves to appreciate and talk in a fabulous location. We spent... close to 2 hours here with a quick walk around the gardens afterwards. The wine was great (we ended up becoming members), every interaction was friendly and welcoming and good deals on some wine. More

The other amazing reviews were spot on. We’ve done a lot of degustation lunches and wineries and this was right up there. Infact some of the best food we have had and the service was excellent. There were plenty of staff on and everyone was... part of the experience so you didn’t always have the same person serving but every person was equally as nice and knowledgeable. Absolutely couldn’t fault it. The food was delicious, the wine pairing was generous and we would definitely recommend it. You don’t get the views like other places but we were lucky enough to get a window table so could see outside. More

Dear Lauren M. We really appreciate you taking the time to provide this feedback. Your positive notes and kind words will go a long way to encouraging the team to keep up the amazing work. Thank you. Regards, Adam Elton Cellar Door Manager

Having lived and eaten out in WA for 15 years i have learned never to get that excited but i was hopeful this time with the reviews. The fact it was my birthday i just wanted memorable for the right reasons. My partner and i... had the four course terroir and left hungry and underwhelmed. The first course would be an amuse bouche in any other part of the world ad given the wait either side just left you starving. The second was a delicious marron and the only real insight into the chefs obvious capabilities. The wagyu was so bland and came with nothing but an onion. The pudding was ok but my kids pudding was better and talking of which their degustation was really not worth $50. At $300 before wine for a family of four why does WA have to be so over priced and deliver such average experiences? More

Dear Mark, Sorry to hear that your dining experience with us didn't meet your expectations on this occasion. The weight of positive reviews we have provide us with confidence that we do consistently delivery on quality and value, but we do take note of your... More

My husband and I came here for a wine tasting and were immediately impressed with the beautiful and immaculate gardens on entering the Estate. The winery is like a chateau and very European in style. The young gentleman (I think he was from Brazil) who... served us in the cellar door was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. We tasted several wines which were very nice, particularly the older wines. The decor in the restaurant was stunning with beautiful fresh flowers on the tables which added a nice touch. I wished we could have stayed for lunch but we had already booked to go somewhere else. We will definitely have to come back to this fabulous winery to try their degustation lunch next time we visit Margaret River. More

Dear KapoAdelaide, Thank you for the wonderful review. It sounds like we will see you again for lunch and look forward to welcoming you back then. Regards, Adam Elton Cellar Door Manager

The most incredible restaurant experience I have ever encountered. We had the seven course degustation Discovery menu paired with wines and it was incredible. Each dish was so beautifully presented and the flavours were mind blowing. We liked how the chefs would deliver the course... to us and explain each element. A lovely touch. We don’t usually drink white wine but my goodness, I am so glad I tried the Voyager white wines. I ended up buying three bottles! No reds, just whites!! May I also say that Angie and Andrew were exceptional. They really made our lunch special. They were professional yet friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Two definite stand-outs in the restaurant. Thank you. We cannot wait to visit you again. Highly recommended. More

We had a family lunch at the estate restaurant, and we were privileged to indulge in the 7-course seasonal discovery menu with paired wines, which was exquisite! Hard to find the words to describe the culinary adventure presented. Each course launched the taste buds into... unchartered territory and the culmination of flavors was sublime. The chef obviously has a touch of genius. The level of service from arrival and throughout the meal was exemplary and we were all made to feel at home, for what was a truly memorable occasion. The location, setting of the restaurant and ambience are second to none. We will be planning for a return visit when next in Margaret River. More

Friends of ours invited us to join them on a tour of Voyager Estate, followed by a wine tasting and cheese board with complimentary glass of wine. I was very much looking forward to the wine tasting, but it was the tour of the estate... that was the highlight of the day. Our tour guide Sean was very knowledgable about about the winery and grapes, and gave us a fun and very interesting tour of the grounds. We got to taste young merlot wine straight from the barrel, and were shown around the very picturesque vineyards in a comfortable safari mobile. The estate itself is very impressive, and the wine is delicious. It was a fantastic morning that I would throughly recommend to anyone. Thanks again to Sean and the team at Voyager for their great hospitality. More

Out of all the restaurants and places I’ve been, this is hands down the best of the best. The service, the presentation, the pairings and the taste of the food is just out of this world. My wife and I along with another couple visited the Voyager winery and stopped for afternoon tea. The scones and cream were delicious and our teas and coffees were well presented. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. Nothing seemed to much for them and they all had a happy disposition about them. We thoroughly enjoyed walking through the beautiful rose gardens and walking over the manicured lawns. Michael & Pam

My Wife and I visited Voyager Estate on a cold, wet and windy day in late August 2010. We sampled two or three of the wines and visited the restaurant. We were greeted by friendly staff and guided to our table which provided a wonderful view of the estate. There were only about 20 people dining on that day but we were not crammed into one section of the restaurant, but were spread out so as not to hear the conversations of the other diners. The fire was warm and inviting and the decore was beautiful. The toilets were spotless. upon the recommendation of the waitress, we decided to try the degustation at $125 per head. We enjoyed a five course meal which complemented the four premium wines and a grape juice served with each course over 2-3 hours. On the drive back to our hotel in Margaret River we could talk of little else but the excellent dining experience. I must say my wife is an excellent cook and critical diner and she still talks highly of it. It was to be our 40th wedding anniversary in a few days and the wine and meal at the restaurant made it a memorable one. Incidentally the wines were standard drinks which I think is the responsible way to go when serving alcohol. The wines and the food were exceptional as was the service. We are based in Perth but we will be visiting Voyager again in 2011.

Voyager Estate

Western australia | margaret river | we grow and make our wines on the land of the wadandi people, the traditional custodians of all of the margaret river region..

Voyager Estate is located on Stevens Road in the Boodjidup Valley, which is emerging as hallowed ground (Leeuwin, the western neighbour, Xanadu’s Stevens Road vineyard and the vineyards of Voyager Estate complete the trinity of prestige in this neck of the woods). The estate was established in '78 by viticulturist Peter Gherardi, and later purchased and expanded by Michael Wright in ’91. Michael’s daughter, Alexandra Burt, has been at the helm since ’05. As of ’23, the vineyard and winery are certified organic and there is extensive clonal and varietal experimentation in the estate vineyards. The grounds are well known for their immaculate year-round grooming, as is the lavish, high-ceiling tasting room, home to an award-winning restaurant. -ERIN LARKIN

Voyager Estate, Margaret River Steve James

In the stevens valley in the subregion of wallcliffe, voyager estate is one of margaret river ’s oldest vineyards, first planted in the late 1970s (though it was called freycinet estate until 1991). today, under the watchful eye of viticulturist steve james, the vineyard occupies over 100 hectares, with the regional stars chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon taking the lead, though there are another 12 varieties planted, including tempranillo and grenache . recent organic certification now applies to the winery and over a three-quarters of the vines, with the remainder not far behind..

Planted over 112 hectares, the Voyager Estate vineyard was first established in 1978, but has constantly evolved over the years, with chardonnay, semillon, sauvignon blanc, sauvignon gris, chenin blanc, viognier, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, merlot, petit verdot, cabernet franc, malbec, tempranillo and grenache now in the ground.

Steve James has worked as the viticulturist at Voyager for over two decades, and he is overseeing the transition of the entire operation to certified organic management. That process initially began with a block of the original cabernet sauvignon plantings, which has been organically farmed since 2004, though not certified.

“We’re always on the lookout for new environmental initiatives,” notes James. “I’m a huge believer in the benefits of revegetation, and we have planted over 70,000 native plants on our property through revegetation programs.”

James was encouraged by the results, with renowned soil scientist Claude Bourguignon also praising the soil structure and the development of deep root systems when he visited in 2018. Bourguignon readily identified that performance as being due to their long-term organic practices, which James had already began expanding through over a third of the vineyard.

“He was particularly impressed with the porosity of the topsoil,” says James, “richness of the clay at depth and the vertical root structure of the vines penetrating deeply into the stony clay subsoil … encouraged by many years of no herbicide use and the ongoing use of compost and natural products. This type of root structure encourages the expression of a sense of place in the wines – this is where the minerality and other earthy complexing elements come from.”

As of 2021, 90 hectares were certified organic (ACO), while the winery was also certified as an organic processor, and James estimates that by 2023 the entire property will have progressed out of conversion. Initially, he didn’t want to overwhelm the viticulture team with new methods, but he notes that they embraced the process, and therefore began rolling it out more quickly, with benefits that have actually proven to make their job somewhat easier.

voyager estate opening hours

“It has been most interesting to see the changes in our wines since farming organically. We are seeing less overt varietal character and more of an expression of the land and the soil. The tannins have become finer, and the fruit flavours are more savoury, complex and layered… I’ve always loved the term winegrower to describe viticulturists, because that is what we do.”

“One of our biggest challenges is actually garden weevils,” says James, “and we’re combating this through organic farming practices with under-vine cultivation and the encouragement of beneficial insects through flowering cover crops. Interestingly, this has given us natural control, which is achieving a better result than with chemical control.”

The vineyard is already showing a big improvement in resilience, which James says will only improve over time. “This was verified during the challenging 2021 harvest in Margaret River where our organically farmed vines produced exceptional fruit with minimal disease,” he says. “Interestingly, a couple of other local organic winegrowers observed a similar trend.”

The management process doesn’t stop at organics, either, with broader issues very much on the agenda. “Climate Change is an issue of paramount importance,” says James, “not only for the survival of our species, but also in the way it specifically impacts our industry. We are ultimately working towards becoming a carbon negative business. We’re currently building and recording baseline soil carbon levels in the pursuit of this goal.”

Voyager estate is a certified member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia and they have also created an Environmental Stewardship Team, which reports to all aspects of the business to refine operations. “We’re always on the lookout for new environmental initiatives,” notes James. “I’m a huge believer in the benefits of revegetation, and we have planted over 70,000 native plants on our property through revegetation programs.”

voyager estate opening hours

Through international offsetting projects, the entire Voyager Estate operation has been carbon neutral since 2017, which includes any air travel associated with the business. Additionally, a 100-kilowatt solar unit was installed on the winery in 2018 to reduce their dependence on the grid. Wastewater is treated onsite and used to water revegetated farmland, while native reed beds have been established to reduce runoff. They are also in the process of establishing their own certified organic compost facility to close the loop on their waste output.

James believes that the holistic approach that underpins operations at Voyager Estate is also vital in better expressing their terroir. “Wise land management is critical for a myriad of environmental reasons and is also crucial in enabling us to make wines which express a true sense of place. Ultimately, we want to work with nature rather than trying to manipulate or control it, encouraging biodiversity and ensuring long-term sustainability of the land.”

voyager estate opening hours

In the vineyard, James has a very hands-on approach, in that the work is exhaustively manual, from pruning, to thinning, to picking and sorting, which is a significant labour exercise over 112 hectares. No matter the scale, James insists this level of detail is vital in achieving the best wines possible, with each plant tended with a “single-vine mentality” to achieve consistent performance in individual blocks, ensuring even ripening and quality to make the best wine possible.

“We are blessed with a naturally very beautiful site, and I think our focus on producing wines which are a pure expression of place is what I am most proud of,” says James. “This actually takes a deliberate focus and is distilled over time out of many factors, with organic farming being one of them. It has been most interesting to see the changes in our wines since farming organically. We are seeing less overt varietal character and more of an expression of the land and the soil. The tannins have become finer, and the fruit flavours are more savoury, complex and layered… I’ve always loved the term winegrower to describe viticulturists,” he adds, “because that is what we do.”

Crunch Fitness, other tenants headed for former Tops Market on West 26th Street in Erie

This article   is part of a recurring series that updates the status of properties of interest in the Erie area. Have a suggestion? Email   [email protected] .

Less than a year after Tops Friendly Markets closed its grocery store at 1520 W. 26th St., the owners of a national health club have announced plans to occupy a large portion of the building.

In a news release issued last week, Crunch Franchise said it was announcing the grand opening of Crunch Erie , which it described as a 45,000-square-foot state of the art fitness facility.

No details available

The announcement, however, gave no indication of when that opening might take place. Repeated messages left at a phone number for Crunch Erie were not returned.

More: Tops Market closing raises food desert concerns in Erie

While construction workers have been at the site in recent weeks, there are no visible signs that a new business will open anytime soon.

Other tenants coming

Apparently, Crunch, a New York City company that has more than 450 gyms worldwide, won't be the only tenant of the grocery store building.

In an online listing for the property, CBRE, a national real estate broker, said that the building would be divided into three parcels, including 21,000 square feet for Grocery Outlet .

Andy Zimmerman, Erie's manager of code enforcement, said he had no information about the cost of the renovations associated with new tenants. Zimmerman said he only knew that the space was being divided to make room for several businesses.

Grocery Outlet, a California-based company with more than 400 locations, hasn't formally announced plans for an Erie location.

Meanwhile, Crunch provided information about its rates and promotions for new members, but no information about when it might open.

"We are excited to bring the Crunch brand to Erie, PA," Brian Hibbard, CEO of Fitness Ventures LLC, said in a statement. "Crunch is for everyone, from the first-time gym-goer to the seasoned athlete."

Hibbard's statement said Crunch offers memberships starting at $9.99 a month.

As construction of the new Target in Doylestown progresses, how close is it to opening?

voyager estate opening hours

If you’ve had the chance to drive past the Doylestown Shopping Center lately, it’s clear the new Target is taking shape.

Its exterior already has some hints of the brand’s signature markings — a mix of red, white and wood façade — and a bit of signage has been installed.

Which begs the question: how much longer before it’s ready to open?

Although Target has yet to announce an official opening date, it appears to be on track for a summer opening, said Sean Sablosky, CEO and founding partner of Arrow Real Estate Services, which manages the shopping center.

“It should open in July. It’s coming along nicely and looks like a beautiful, modern, new, empty Target,” Sablosky said.

However, he noted variables such as weather, labor and materials could have an impact and said nailing down a date “is more art than science.”

Target is currently under construction in the borough’s retail commercial district, going into spaces formerly occupied by the Mercantile, Essentials Salon & Day Spa, Bon Ton and Michelle’s Hallmark.

The 74,500-square-foot store will join several other retailers at the shopping center, including Acme Market, Staples, and Famous Footwear, as well as restaurants, such as Bacco Italian Bistro, Starbucks, Wendy’s and Turning Point.

“We’re excited to bring an easy, affordable and convenient shopping experience to new guests in Doylestown community with this new Target store,” a Target spokesperson said in a recent email.

“As we get closer to opening the store, we’ll have more specific details to share – including how the shopping experience will be tailored to serve local guests and the grand opening date.”

Rosario Resort on Orcas Island reopens, promises new amenities

After a brief closure and an ownership change, Orcas Island’s Rosario Resort has partially reopened to guests as the busy summer season approaches.

The resort’s new owner, Empower Investing, said Wednesday it will immediately begin operating and taking reservations for lodging, weddings, events and the marina. The Moran Mansion, which houses the resort’s restaurant and spa, remains closed for renovations.

Rosario’s new owners are hinting at big changes for the property but so far keeping specifics mum, saying they are “focused on plans to add many other amenities to the property and will announce them as they are ready.”

Empower Investing founder Chris Robison said in an interview he plans some additional housing and lodging at the site, but he was cautious to not offer details because plans are “not set in stone yet.”

“The high-level vision is we understand Orcas Island and the unique community it is, so [we are] leaning into that and preserving this piece of history,” said Robison, who moved to the island in 2016. “We’re not making it a Cancun-style resort.”

The company plans to keep changes “in alignment with the vibe and the culture of the island,” Robison said.

The historic waterfront resort closed temporarily in February and laid off 45 employees as it transitioned to a new owner. It’s unclear how many of those employees the resort will rehire.

The sale will take place over multiple transactions, with the first portion closing this week for $6.65 million, according to county property records. The total price will be more than $20 million, Robison said.

An ownership transition for one of the San Juan Islands’ well-known resorts is a rare event. “It is not just unusual, it’s totally unique [when] properties like this come up,” Compass agent Kevin Ranker, who represented the buyers, said in an interview.

But changes to the 84-acre property will take time. Robison did not have an estimate for when the mansion would reopen, and other renovations could take years. “None of these changes will be immediate.”

The Dirt: Michael Jordan buys new estate in Jupiter, and Kyma restaurant to open in West Palm Beach

voyager estate opening hours

Welcome to  The Dirt ! I’m real estate reporter  Kimberly Miller  with the latest developments in the sizzling market.

In this week's real estate news, some wealthy folks are terribly vexed because they can't park their 164-foot yacht at their dock in North Palm Beach, and some normal folk are troubled that proposed affordable housing in Jupiter really isn't that affordable.

Ahhhh, Palm Beach County. From Ruinart champagne to the champagne of beers , we've got it all.

There's also breaking restaurant news and The Palm Beach Post covers restaurants better than Velveeta cheese on nachos. Or hollandaise on eggs benny, or flambéed orange sauce on crepes Suzette or, well, you get the picture. We write a lot about restaurants.

Senior business reporter Alexandra Clough was the first to report on a famous Greek restaurant coming to West Palm Beach, and there's also a story about why Planet Smoothie and Moe's Southwest Grill co-founder Martin Sprock may be abandoning plans for an eatery on West Palm Beach's acclaimed Antique Row.

A 164-foot yacht named Honey gets the cold shoulder in North Palm Beach

The very best part of this story is the revelation that we — little ol' Palm Beach County — have become a "mini-Monaco" for the wealthy mariners of the world who can handle a little chop in their 164-foot mega yachts. (I can't resist a "Wolf of Wall Street" clip) But once they get the yachts here here, they face a serious parking dilemma .

A North Palm Beach homeowner just wants to dock his yacht named Honey at his home. Trouble is, he has to "occupy" the home and since he's got several other homes in Palm Beach County and this one isn't his primary residence the definition of "occupy" seems to be the stumbling point.

It's a real Palm Beach dilemma. Too many homes and a mega yacht. Sigh.

Penthouse at The Bristol in West Palm Beach sells for $28 million

The ultra-luxury tower that some folks originally poo-pooed because it was in West Palm Beach instead of Palm Beach just had another record sale for a single-condominium at a recorded $27.99 million. The six-bedroom penthouse is one half of the 23rd floor of the swanky condo that sparkles like a beacon of affluence on the shores of the beleaguered Lake Worth Lagoon .

The seller was a company affiliated with a trust in the name of the late Boston developer Gerald S. Fineberg. The buyer's side is a mystery hidden in a trust that's sealed inside the lost treasure of Oak Island .

Michael Jordan buys another multi-million dollar home in the ultra-exclusive Bear's Club

Just a guess, but I'm thinking Michael Jordan can buy a home just about any-dang-where he pleases. For the first time last year, Jordan made the Forbes list of the country's 400 richest people , so to choose another property in the Bear's Club in Jupiter must say something about its exclusivity and high-end amenities.

His new 9,100-square-foot home has nothing on his custom-built estate nearby, but it did cost a recorded $16.5 million, which ain't too shabby.

New York's acclaimed Kyma Greek restaurant coming to West Palm Beach

If a renowned New York restaurant is going to open its first eatery outside of New York, where else is it going to go than Wall Street South? So, of course, Kyma, which offers traditional Greek taverna food, will be coming to downtown West Palm Beach by next year with ground-floor space AND a lively rooftop area.

I do so love a piece of baklava, but at $14-a-pop, it's a little above my budget. There's a nice happy-hour menu with lots of $10 "bites", which seems more doable for the non Wall Street Southerners .

Live lightly.

How the Renovation of a House Rocked a Famous Church

Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem and one of its most well-known members have been ensnared in a seven-year saga, after a deacon hired to renovate another member’s house didn’t finish the job.

The exterior of a stone church.

By Ronda Kaysen

Abyssinian Baptist Church is one of the oldest Black churches in America, and certainly one of the most storied. As a college student at Columbia University, Barack Obama often lingered in the back pews during Sunday services, taking in the sermon and the choir. Hundreds of mourners have gathered at the 216-year-old institution in recent years for the memorial services of Cicely Tyson and André Leon Talley .

It’s the kind of church where networking mixes with Bible study, and the roll reads like a who’s who list of Black intelligentsia and entrepreneurship.

In 2017, when Mara Porter, a member of the church, found a Harlem brownstone to buy, she was struck by the charming real estate agent who had listed it. He was also a deacon at the church. A year later, Ms. Porter and her husband, Tommie Porter, hired the deacon as a contractor to lead the renovations of the $1.44 million house. “We really loved the idea of keeping it in the community,” said Ms. Porter, 44, host of “CrimeFeed” on Investigation Discovery.

The business deal between the parishioners, however, collapsed spectacularly, ensnaring the church and its membership in a six-year saga of multiple lawsuits, closed-door meetings at the church, a public spat in a Harlem restaurant, a bankruptcy filing by the deacon and a criminal investigation.

The Porters and other members of the church accused the deacon, Jerome Yeiser, of absconding with money in lawsuits filed against Mr. Yeiser by the Porters and another church family. The Porters wanted Mr. Yeiser prosecuted for grand larceny, for failing to pay subcontractors and misspending funds. In 2019, the Manhattan district attorney’s office, then led by Cyrus R. Vance Jr., opened a criminal investigation into Mr. Yeiser.

But then in January 2022, Alvin L. Bragg Jr., became the D.A. and there was a big problem, the kind of problem that comes when the D.A. is also a Sunday school teacher at the church.

Mr. Bragg is a longtime church member. He even counted on some of his fellow congregants to help him get elected: Mr. Yeiser, his wife, Avis, who was a deaconess at the church, and elder daughter all contributed $50 or less each to Mr. Bragg’s campaign.

In August 2022, Mr. Bragg recused the office from the case because of “the nexus of the allegations and the church community” and because of his relationship with Mr. Yeiser — Mr. Bragg taught Mr. Yeiser’s daughters at Sunday school, said Emily Tuttle, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan D.A., in an email.

Hermann Walz, an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a former assistant district attorney in Queens and Brooklyn, said district attorneys recuse themselves to avoid the appearance of impropriety. “It’s absolutely proper to say, ‘My office should not handle this case,’” he said.

The investigation was transferred to the Bronx district attorney’s office, which closed the case in August 2023. “Based on the evidence, we could not prove criminality beyond a reasonable doubt,” said Patrice O’Shaughnessy, a Bronx D.A. spokeswoman in an email.

With the case closed, the Porters and another couple, John and Cheryl Graves, are hoping to recover their losses through lawsuits.

And there are plenty of lawsuits: In January 2020, Mr. and Ms. Graves filed a lawsuit against Mr. Yeiser for breach of agreement and fraud. Two months later, Mr. Yeiser and Ms. Yeiser, 60, followed up with a lawsuit for defamation against the two couples and the New York Daily News, which reported on the conflict; intent to inflict emotional distress against the two couples: and for assault and battery against Ms. Porter. And in December 2023, the Porters countersued Mr. Yeiser and his company, Siva Real Estate Services, for breach of contract, unjust enrichment and fraudulent inducement. None have been resolved, though a judge dismissed the claim against the Daily News.

Mr. Yeiser, 63, declined to comment on the lawsuits or the allegations against him, saying, “I definitely don’t owe a dime and I have all my proof and when it’s time, it will be submitted.”

‘No Other Church’

Ms. Porter, who grew up in Maryland, became a born-again Christian in college at the University of California, Los Angeles.

She found her church home at Abyssinian when she moved to New York in 2002, attending nearly every Sunday and sitting high in the balcony (it was always too crowded to find a seat down below). “It’s the Black church of Harlem. There was no other church I would have thought of going to,” Ms. Porter said.

The church, which declined to share the number of members in its congregation, has 50 deacons and deaconesses, according to Gerald Barbour, the chairman of the diaconate. Every Sunday, the sister deaconesses sit in the center pews and the deacon brothers sit along the side, by the organ, Mr. Barbour said. The deacons handle blessings, communion and wear a badge identifying themselves.

Mr. Yeiser had been a deacon for eight years when he first met Ms. Porter at the brownstone that made her swoon.

“It was an embarrassment of riches,” said Ms. Porter, 44, who recalled the spring day seven years ago when she and a friend visited the 114-year-old brownstone just a short 10-minute walk from Abyssinian. The woodwork was exquisite, from original shutters on the windows to the 10-foot-tall wood-carved living room mirror.

Ms. Porter imagined moving out of her Upper West Side apartment and raising her two children in Harlem, in the home where, decades earlier, a young Harry Belafonte had lingered on the front stoop with a teenage Sidney Poitier.

“Jerome was great, very present, very engaged,” Ms. Porter said, recalling her interactions with Mr. Yeiser during the home buying process. “He often referenced how proud he was of me and Tommie being a young Black couple raising a family in Harlem. From the beginning, he made it feel like he was rooting for us.”

A year later, in spring 2018, when Ms. Porter and Mr. Porter, 46, who works in tech security, were getting ready to remodel the house, they did not know that the Internal Revenue Service had recently levied a nearly $75,000 tax lien against Mr. Yeiser and that he and his wife had filed for bankruptcy in the past. They would first learn about the tax troubles when Mr. Yeiser explained to them why he couldn’t pay the subcontractors, according to the Porters’ countersuit.

All the couple knew was that Mr. Yeiser had agreed to renovate their kitchen, bathrooms and add an addition to the garden level apartment, with a deck above it that would open onto the kitchen, a $539,000 job, according to the renovation agreement between Siva Real Estate and the Porters.

For the first few months, work moved along without incident — walls came down; electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems went in, according to the countersuit and a video The Times reviewed of a meeting between Mr. Yeiser and Ms. Porter. But in December 2018, the work came to a halt, “unexpectedly and inexplicably,” according to the countersuit.

The countersuit details mounting anxiety and confusion: When the Porters asked questions — in emails and in person — Mr. Yeiser told them that his bank account was frozen because of unpaid taxes, and some of their money had been used to pay his taxes; but the money would be released soon, he promised. As the weeks went by and the winter set in with no work getting done, the Porters learned that the subcontractors had not been paid in months; inspections had not been completed and Mr. Yeiser was not a licensed contractor. (Mr. Yeiser’s license expired in 2013, according to the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.)

Tally it up, and $192,758 was unaccounted for, the countersuit alleges.

In March 2019, Mr. Yeiser quit over email.

That same day, a sprinkler subcontractor filed a $15,000 lien against the Porters’ home, an effort to collect the debt that also meant the couple could not sell the house until it was settled.

“It’s rare that somebody just stops paying,” said Barry McLaughlin, the plumber for the job. “But in this situation, he just basically vanished.”

Bleeding money — $16,000 a month in mortgage payments and rent on the Harlem apartment where the family was living — the Porters panicked.

They turned to the church.

‘Not the First Victims’

In early spring 2019, the Porters laid out the conflict to the Rev. Calvin O. Butts III, who told them “they were not the first victims,” and other parishioners who had hired Mr. Yeiser as a contractor “had been defrauded out of thousands of dollars in fact patterns that were eerily similar,” according to documents filed in federal bankruptcy court by the Porters as creditors seeking payment from Mr. Yeiser.

Dr. Butts advised the Porters to get a lawyer and meet with him and the deacon board the following Sunday, which they did in a closed-door meeting, the Porters’ bankruptcy filings show.

Mr. Yeiser, who was at church that Sunday, too, was summoned to the meeting after the Porters left, and he and Ms. Yeiser, were suspended from their roles as deacons, according to the lawsuit he and his wife filed against the Porters and others.

“I felt horrible,” said Mr. Barbour 79, who attended the meeting. “As officers and members of the church, I felt very disappointed, very sad.”

For the Yeisers, the experience was ostracizing and humiliating, and “turned a house of worship, which had been for decades a place of solace and comfort to the plaintiffs, into a place of near-medieval banishment,” according to the Yeisers’ lawsuit, as they were “told that they were no longer welcome in their own Church.”

The Yeisers’ suit goes on to chronicle more humiliations: Two months after losing their positions, the Yeisers were at lunch with three Abyssinian deacons at Renaissance, a Harlem restaurant. It was a Sunday, and Ms. Porter was there, too. She called the couple thieves and liars who could not be trusted, walked up to Mr. Yeiser’s table and in front of everyone, poured a glass of water over his head.

Ms. Porter denied the allegations in her countersuit.

She and her husband, desperate to finish the renovation, contacted the various subcontractors directly.

“They had a house partially finished, they wanted to move into it and they couldn’t,” said Mr. McLaughlin, the plumber. “Jerome was gone.”

Ms. Porter cut deals with the subcontractors, including Mr. McLaughlin, and Bilal Farooq, the HVAC subcontractor. “The lady paid us in pennies to get it done,” Mr. Farooq said.

The family moved into their house in July 2019.

Mr. Yeiser filed for bankruptcy a month later.

‘Church Folk’

Years before the Porters hired Mr. Yeiser, Mr. Graves, 66, and Ms. Graves, 59, met Mr. Yeiser in the fellowship hall, where parishioners often gather and eat, after Sunday services in early 2014, according to a lawsuit the Graveses filed against Mr. Yeiser. The conversation turned to home improvement — the couple wanted to renovate the basement of their Harlem brownstone — and Mr. Yeiser offered to do it, according to the Graveses lawsuit.

The job was a big one for a basement — a contractor would need to level the basement floor and renovate the wall along the steps, according to the work agreement between Mr. Yeiser and the homeowners. In July 2014, Mr. Yeiser signed a contract for almost $18,000, but like with the Porters, work stopped in December and Mr. Yeiser “refused to pay subcontractors,” according to the Graveses lawsuit.

Mr. Graves rarely went to church on Wednesdays. But after Mr. Yeiser stopped returning his texts and calls, Mr. Graves, a lawyer, showed up at church on a Wednesday night looking for Mr. Yeiser, but could not get a straight answer from him as to when and how the work would get done, the Graveses lawsuit shows.

As the Porters would do years later, Mr. and Ms. Graves turned to Dr. Butts, their lawsuit shows. They were told that they were not the first couple to come forward, according to documents filed in federal bankruptcy court by the Graveses as creditors seeking payment from Mr. Yeiser. Mr. Barbour, however, told The Times that he knew of only two families — the Porters and the Graveses — that came forward with allegations.

Another deacon tried to mediate the peace, talking to Mr. Yeiser and Mr. Graves separately, according to the Graveses lawsuit. Quinton Dixie, an associate research professor of Black Church Studies at Duke Divinity School, said such a strategy is common in churches. “Generally speaking church folk would try to handle things themselves, rather than introduce any kind of secular authorities,” Dr. Dixie said.

But no resolution was reached and Mr. and Ms. Graves eventually hired another contractor to complete the job, according to the their lawsuit.

Mr. and Ms. Graves declined to comment on the lawsuits.

After the Porters came forward and the church began looking at the complaints, a formal investigation was opened. In February 2020, Dr. Butts told the congregation in a letter and from the pulpit that Mr. Yeiser and Ms. Yeiser had been suspended from their positions. “It was pretty much publicized throughout the church,” Mr. Barbour said.

Dr. Butts died in October 2022. A few months earlier, he called Ms. Porter. “He said he really felt very badly about what happened and said, ‘I wish we had done more,’” Ms. Porter recalled. While she appreciated the gesture, it was not enough to bring her back to the fold.

“It really deeply affected my faith — not my faith in God,” she said. “It has completely turned me off to the church.” She no longer attends Abyssinian or any other church.

IR-2024-108, April 12, 2024

WASHINGTON — With the April tax deadline arriving next week, the Internal Revenue Service today reminded millions of last-minute tax filers that the agency has a variety of free tools and resources available on IRS.gov.

From tax preparation, answers to tax law questions, refund tracking, tax law research to business topics and more, IRS.gov has everything needed for taxpayers to file on time or get an easy, automatic six-month extension to file. The IRS also has special Saturday hours available at 70 Taxpayer Assistance Centers across the country to help taxpayers.

“Millions of taxpayers across the nation will be working on their tax returns during the final hours, and people should remember they have many ways to get last-minute help,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “We have a variety of free tools on IRS.gov that can help with basic tax law questions, provide free filing options, update refund status and even provide ways to request an extension for more time to file. We’re continuing our expanded special assistance for taxpayers right through the final weekend of tax season with special Saturday hours at 70 locations.”

For most of the nation, the tax deadline is April 15. Taxpayers in Maine and Massachusetts have until April 17 to file and pay taxes due this year. This is because these states observe the Patriots’ Day holiday on April 15 this year and April 16 is the Emancipation Day holiday in the District of Columbia. Other taxpayers in disaster areas, certain active-duty military members and citizens living abroad automatically get more time to file; more details are below.

For taxpayers who need an extension of time to file their taxes, there are several options to get an automatic extension through Oct. 15. Although an extension grants extra time to file, it does not extend the obligation to pay taxes due on April 15, 2024. To avoid penalties and late fees, taxpayers who owe should pay either their full tax bill or at least what they can afford to pay by the April 15 deadline.

The IRS estimates 19 million taxpayers will file for an automatic extension.

The IRS has already received more than 100 million tax returns, with tens of millions more expected to be filed as the tax deadline approaches.

“Delivering tax season is a massive undertaking, and we greatly appreciate people in many different areas working long hours to serve taxpayers as the tax deadline approaches,” Werfel added. “This effort reaches far beyond the IRS and includes hard-working tax professionals, software providers, the payroll community as well as our colleagues in the state tax agencies. Their work helping taxpayers makes a difference.”

Get tax help, day or night

For those needing last-minute help, taxpayers will find filing information for individuals as well as businesses and self-employed on IRS.gov. For last-minute filers looking for free resources, IRS Direct File remains an option as does IRS Free File . Anyone can use IRS Free File to submit an extension of time to file regardless of their income.

IRS.gov is an important resource that can help in a number of areas:

  • For answers to tax law questions, taxpayers will find tools like the Interactive Tax Assistant or they can use the Frequently Asked Questions tool to find answers to dozens of topics.
  • To see federal tax information, taxpayers can use the Online Account . They'll find information such as a payoff amount, a balance owed, their payment history and key information from their current year tax return as originally filed. They can also get tax return transcripts.
  • Use the Get Transcript tool to view, print or download their tax transcripts after the IRS has processed a return.
  • Current and prior year forms , instructions and tax publications can be downloaded and printed anytime.
  • Special information is available about tax credits and deductions , some of which can be overlooked. Available to individuals and businesses, credits can reduce the amount of tax due while deductions can reduce the amount of taxable income.
  • Get the most up-to-date information about tax refunds using the Where's My Refund? tool and on the official IRS mobile app, IRS2Go .
  • For payment information, Direct Pay is free and allows people to securely pay their taxes directly from their checking or savings account without any fees or registration. They can schedule payments up to 365 days in advance. After submitting a payment through Direct Pay, they’ll receive immediate confirmation. For more payment options, visit IRS.gov/payments .

Go paperless

The IRS encourages all taxpayers to file electronically and choose direct deposit to avoid refund delays. Filing on paper can significantly delay a refund. Tax software helps individuals steer clear of mistakes by doing the math. It also guides people through each section of their tax return using a question-and-answer format.

Some taxpayers get automatic extensions

Special rules offer some taxpayers more time without having to request an extension:

  • U.S. citizens and resident aliens who live and work outside of the United States and Puerto Rico get an automatic two-month extension, until June 15, to file their tax returns. However, tax payments are still due April 15 or interest will accrue on the unpaid tax.
  • Members of the military on duty outside the United States and Puerto Rico also receive an automatic two-month extension to file. Those serving in combat zones have up to 180 days after they leave the combat zone to file returns and pay any taxes due. Details are available in Publication 3, Armed Forces' Tax Guide .
  • When the U.S. president makes a disaster area declaration, the IRS can postpone certain tax deadlines for taxpayers in affected areas. Taxpayers in qualified disaster areas do not need to submit an extension electronically or on paper. Information on the most recent tax relief for disaster situations can be found on the Extension of time to file your tax return page.

Find information on free local tax prep

The IRS' Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals, including:

  • People who generally make $64,000 or less.
  • People with disabilities.
  • Limited English-speaking taxpayers.

The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program also offers free tax help for taxpayers, particularly those age 60 and older.

The VITA/TCE Site Locator can help eligible taxpayers find the nearest community-based site staffed by IRS-trained and certified volunteers. Demand is high for this service, so taxpayers may experience longer wait times for appointments. Taxpayers can use the locator tool to find an available site near them. It’s updated throughout the tax season, so individuals should check back or increase the distance from their location in their search if they don't see a nearby site listed.

MilTax , Military OneSource’s tax service, offers online software for eligible military members, veterans and their families to electronically file a federal return and up to three state returns for free.

Assistive technology options

At the online Alternative Media Center , taxpayers will find a variety of accessible products like screen reading software, refreshable Braille displays and screen magnifying software. These products include tax forms, instructions and publications. Many can be downloaded or viewed online as Section 508 compliant PDF, HTML, eBraille, text and large print.

Having trouble paying? IRS has options to help

For those who owe a payment with their tax return, the IRS has a number of payment options .

For taxpayers that are unable to pay in full by the tax deadline, the IRS recommends they should file their tax return and pay what they can, and apply for an online payment plan . By filing by the deadline, taxpayers will avoid failure to file penalties and interest – even if they’re unable to pay. Taxpayers can explore various payments options; they can receive an immediate response of payment plan acceptance or denial without calling or writing to the IRS. Online payment plan options include:

  • Short-term payment plan – The total balance owed is less than $100,000 in combined tax, penalties and interest. Additional time of up to 180 days to pay the balance in full.
  • Long-term payment plan – The total balance owed is less than $50,000 in combined tax, penalties and interest. Pay in monthly payments for up to 72 months. Payments may be set up using direct debit (automatic bank withdraw) which eliminates the need to send in a payment each month, saving postage costs and reducing the chance of default. For balances between $25,000 and $50,000, direct debit is required.

Though interest and late-payment penalties continue to accrue on any unpaid taxes after April 15, the failure to pay penalty is cut in half while an installment agreement is in effect. Find more information about the costs of payment plans on the IRS’ Additional information on payment plans webpage.

Adjust withholding to prevent tax "surprises"

Tax filing season is an excellent time for taxpayers to check their withholding to avoid a tax surprise when filing in 2025. Life events like marriage, divorce, having a child or an income change can all impact taxes.

The Tax Withholding Estimator helps people bring the tax they pay closer to what is owed. Employees can assess their income tax, credits, adjustments and deductions, and determine whether they need to change their withholding by submitting a new Form W-4, Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate to their employer, not the IRS.
