Camel Safari in Jaisalmer – 8 Important Tips to Have a Great Time!

If you’re heading to Rajasthan I already, without a doubt, know that you’re going there for a camel safari in Jaisalmer.

Or, at least, to head into the mysterious Thar desert and discover its secrets for yourself.

A camel safari in Jaisalmer is an essential part of any Rajasthani adventure and should be high up on your Indian bucket list.

It’s something that I would recommend everyone experience, at least once.

Riding out to the sand dunes on your new furry friend, gazing in awe at the vibrant colours of the sunset, and sleeping out under the stars all make it an unforgettable trip.

But, there are a few things to know before you get too excited and go ahead and book one!

So, I’ve put together my crucial Jaisalmer camel safari travel tips to ensure you have a great time.

camel safari in jaisalmer tips

So, what exactly IS a camel safari in Jaisalmer?

Typically a camel safari in Jaisalmer includes a transfer from Jaisalmer to a camel point in the Thar Desert.

You then ride a camel for one to two hours (two is plenty, or your bum will be dead!) and then watch the sunset on the dunes.

From there, you’ll eat dinner at a camp or out in the desert, watch a dance show and sleep out in the desert.

This could be on a cot under the stars (out in the open on the dunes) or camping in a tent.

Although it is called ‘camping’, it’s actually more like luxury camping or glamping! Some tents will have double beds and even running hot water!

These are my top tips for a great camel safari in Jaisalmer

1. pick the right season.

A camel safari in Jaisalmer sounds like fun and games until it’s April and your skin is melting due to it being 40 degrees in the shade.

Rajasthan reaches temperatures of up to 52 degrees during summer (April – June) and so you definitely don’t want to pick the wrong season!

June – early September is also monsoon and, although Rajasthan doesn’t see constant floods of rain, you definitely don’t want to be caught out in it when it falls!

You could be sleeping open air in the desert and it would totally suck if you were wet through.

During this time the sunsets are also not so pretty, due to the cloud cover.

The best time for a camel safari in Jaisalmer and to visit the Thar desert in Rajasthan would be anywhere from September – March as this is India’s winter season.

These months have pleasant temperatures and dreamy sunsets which produce a sky full of colour!

I personally waited until the winter season to experience Jaisalmer. I just couldn’t imagine going at any other time.

2. Don’t book a Jaisalmer Camel Safari advance

This is a top tip I would give anyone travelling to India; don’t book any transport, hotels or attractions in advance.

Sure, you can book in your hotel for the first night to make sure you have somewhere to head from the airport but after that, I wouldn’t bother.

Not only may you experience delays due to transport or falling head over heels with a place and wishing you had spent more time there, but you also could be paying over the odds online.

I would highly recommend waiting and booking a safari in Jaisalmer upfront.

3. Don’t pick the first option, shop around

Your hotel may offer you a Jaisalmer camel safari service and the touts in the market streets can be very persuasive, but I would personally do some shopping around before picking a company.

Although the whole of Jaisalmer offers a desert safari service of some kind, I would do some research online, double-check the prices, what’s included, and if it’s definitely what you want.

Don’t make the mistake of picking the first one as you may find that it’s overpriced, or badly organised.

Prices can vary greatly depending on the service and where you’re staying. For example, if you’re staying in a 5* resort, you can obviously expect a 5* price.

Furthermore, if you’re looking to spend a night out under the stars on the dunes, you can expect to pay a lot less than a luxurious camping/glamping experience.

My hotel, Helsinki House , offered two types of Camel safari in Jaisalmer. One was a backpacker-priced sleep on the dunes with a camel safari, transfer, and meals for around 1800 rupees (£20).

The other was a more tailored camping experience for around 3-4000 per person (£35-£40)

There are so many booking offices in town, so try out a few and make sure you’re getting a good price! Remember, you can haggle and all prices are up for negotiation. This brings me to my next point of…

camel safari in jaisalmer

4. Check what’s included

A lot of travellers I met complained of getting ripped off for a Jaisalmer camel safari.

They didn’t get to ride the camel enough or a meal wasn’t included that they were expecting.

Although it doesn’t seem like much, having everything you expect to be included can make the difference of whether you have a great camel safari or not.

So, it’s important to make sure you ask these questions before booking;

  • What sand dunes are we going to?
  • How long are we going to ride the camel?
  • What meals are included?
  • Will we be sleeping out in the desert on cots? Are we provided a blanket?
  • Will we be camping and what is the name of the camp? what facilities does each tent have?
  • Is there water included?
  • What’s the price?
  • …and, saving the best til’ last, do you offer a discount?! (Lol)

5. Pick private dunes over Sam sand dunes

Jaisalmer’s desert isn’t like Dubai with miles and miles of untouched dunes. It’s actually a desert with lots of foliage and there are specific areas of dunes that tour operators visit with tourists.

Sam sand dunes are the most popular due to their convenient location and you’ll find that many of the camps are based in this area.

This means that you’ll be joined by loads of tourists which may not be as enjoyable. It sees over 400 tourists per day!

I know, for me, I wanted a more private tour and experience, so, I made sure I shopped around.

Luckily, Helsinki House owned private dunes a little further afield.

This meant that there would be hardly anybody there and was the perfect setting for photography.

If you would like to check the Helsinki House dates and rates, see here.

6. Come prepared and bring supplies

Thar desert is boiling in the day (even in winter) and then very cold at night.

So I would make sure that you bring the right gear to protect yourself from the harsh conditions.

Bring suncream for the sun beating down on you, water to make sure you’re hydrated, warm clothes for the night spent out in the desert.

Plus your camera to record all the great memories!

jaisalmer camel safari tips

7. There are experiences for all budgets

A lot of people think that spending a night out in the desert has to be a ‘backpacker experience’. But this is far from the truth.

Jaisalmer offers a massive range of luxury desert camps from Camp E Khas to the out-of-this-world luxury  Serai camp .

You really don’t have to want anything in these places!

You’ll be waited on hand and foot and feel refreshed, rather than sandy, after your stay.

jaisalmer camel safari tips

8. Make sure to enjoy your Jaisalmer camel safari!

The most important tip, enjoy the experience! Relish in the mysteries of the Thar desert. Make some furry camel friends, be bedazzled by the colours in the sunset, and marvel at the blanket of a thousand stars!

There’s little to no light pollution in the desert so you will literally have a thousand stars shining just for you.

This was by far one of my favourite experiences in India to date.

I’m pretty sure I’ve left my heart in Jaisalmer and will make it a mission to go back.

Camel Safaris in Jaisalmer and Bikaner: What to Know

Explore the Desert on a Camel Safari in India

camel safari in jaisalmer jaipur photos

Like in Jordan , one of the most unforgettable and enchanting experiences you can have in India is to ride through the rippling, windswept desert on camel back and camp out under the stars. Taking a camel safari will also give you the opportunity to witness the rustic, rural desert life of India. While the desert can be barren, it's also surprisingly well populated. Here's what you need to know to plan your trip.

Where Can You Go on a Camel Safari?

The most popular place for camel safaris in India is in the desert around Jaisalmer , in Rajasthan. To have the best experience, it's important to consider which location is most suitable for you. Most tourists head to the Sam sand dunes, which are unappealingly commercial and crowded these days. The sand dunes near Khuri village in Desert National Park are more peaceful but have started to attract their share of tourists. If you book a camel safari package from Jaisalmer, it will most likely include a stop at abandoned Kuldhara village on the way to Khuri.

Bikaner, also in Rajasthan, is another popular option for camel safaris. However, the desert is nowhere near as impressive as Jaisalmer. You'll be disappointed if you go there expecting undulating sand dunes because they no longer exist. Instead, the safaris generally focus on visiting isolated desert villages.

Great camel safaris can be done at lesser-known Osian (about an hour and a half north of Jodhpur on the way to Bikaner. Stay at Reggie's Camel Camp or Osian Sand Dunes Resort and Camp . The interesting temples at Osian are an added attraction. Manvar Desert Camp and Resort is an exclusive option in the desert at Khiyansariya (between Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner).

Many camel safari companies will allow you to choose your route, so you can decide if you want to take the road less traveled or the more touristy track. Be specific about it. Otherwise, you'll most likely end up in close proximity to lots of other tourists around Sam or Khuri in Jaisalmer.

If you do want to go on an offbeat sightseeing tour, Vedic Walks offers an overnight Desert Camel Safari and Camping Experience near Pushkar. It includes a safari through villages and a unique spiritual walking tour of the town. Dharma Camel Safari is another option in Puskhar that gets good feedback.

In addition, it's possible to go on a camel safari in the the alpine desert in Ladakh, mainly in the Nubra Valley from Hundar to Diskit . The camels on these trips are the double hump Bactrian variety.

Reputable Camel Safari Companies in Jaisalmer and Bikaner

Be sure to take care when booking your camel safari as the business is very competitive and it's definitely a case of you get what you pay for. Cheaper deals may seem appealing initially, but you'll find that the quality of food, bedding, and other necessities is lower. There will be more people in the group too. Make sure you find out exactly what the arrangements will be, such as whether dinner will be provided at a nearby village or a cook will make it for you over an open fire in the desert.

Most hotels and backpacker hostels in Jaisalmer sell camel safaris (for a commission). However, it's better to go with specialist operators, so you can be sure of what you're getting. Recommended ones include Sahara Travels (next to the Fort gate), Trotters Independent Travel , and Real Desert Man Camel Safaris. Their websites contain details of the various safari packages available. The safaris offered by Shahi Palace, Hotel Pleasant Haveli , Wanderlust Hostel , and Toffu Hotel and are also decent. Many offer non-touristy options away from the crowds.

If heading to Khuri, you can arrive by 4 p.m. and negotiate your camel safari directly with the camps there (they're all situated in a row). On a standard evening safari, you'll spend sunset in the sand dunes and return to the camp for dinner and a cultural program, before leaving for Jaisalmer at about 8.30 p.m.

If you really want to go off the beaten path and have a rustic experience, far from the tourist trail, try The Adventure Travel Agency in Jaisalmer. They'll take you a long camel safari out towards Barmer, sleeping under the stars on army bedding in the dunes.

There are fewer options for camel safaris in Bikaner. The oldest and most well-known operators are Vino Desert Safari, Rao Bikaji Camel Safari , and Camel Man.

Duration of Camel Safaris

It's possible to go on a quick camel safari and return the same day. However, most people prefer to go deeper into the desert for a few days. Many choose the overnight option, which is sensible as it can become monotonous otherwise (and you're likely to end up with a sore bum). This consists of riding the camel into the desert, watching the sunset, having dinner, star gazing, waking up for sunrise, and then riding back. Desert sunsets and sunrises are pretty darn spectacular!

Longer options, up to 30 days are available for hardcore enthusiasts! You can get an itinerary tailored to meet your needs.

How Much Will it Cost?

The price of camel safaris varies according to the route, standard of food and comfort provided. In Jaisalmer, rates start from around 1,000 rupees per person for a reputable sunset camel ride into the dunes and cultural program. Expect to pay 1,600 rupees upwards for a full-day (sunrise and sunset) camel safari package. Quality overnight camel safaris start from around 1,800 rupees per person. However, this can increase to 3,000 rupees for top-of-the-range camping (or glamping!) facilities.

Prices can be negotiated, so don't book anything in advance.

What to Expect

Riding a camel can become surprisingly uncomfortable after a while. Many people complain of having very sore legs and bums by the end of their journey.

On the most basic safaris, you'll be sleeping out under the stars either on a camp bed or on the ground. There are no toilets on these safaris. You'll have to go wild! The more luxurious safaris have established camps with Swiss tents and attached toilets.

The best time is during the cooler dry months, from September to March. After March, the desert becomes unbearably hot, and then the monsoon season starts. It doesn't rain much though, and temperatures remain high. Camel safaris usually depart early in the morning to allow some distance to be covered, and a suitable camping spot to be found and set up, before dusk.

What to Take with You

Bring something comfortable and padded to sit on to make the journey less painful if you're going on a longer safari.

Other useful items to bring include sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, toilet paper, flashlight, insect repellent, water bottle, toothbrush and toothpaste, sleeping bag liner and plenty of warm clothing as it can get cold in the desert at night. Do be aware that you won't be able to bathe in the desert, so wet wipes will definitely come in handy as well.

Great Activities for Kids Visiting China

Thinking of taking a camel safari in Jaisalmer? Well here is everything you need to know to create your perfect journey from India’s Golden City.

Catching a sleepy-eyed camel into the desert has to be one of the true highlights of visiting Rajasthan. You will sleep under the stars and visit countless beautiful villages. You will also have the chance to see unique and rare wildlife.

I have spent many nights out in the Great Thar desert and I have to say these are some of my fondest memories of India, so read on to discover how to plan your own desert safari.

Before I carry on I would like to invite you to find out more about what else Rajasthan has to offer tourists. If you would like to know simply read my guide on tourism in Rajasthan.

A man rends his cows in rural Rajasthan

Why choose the Jaisalmer desert for your camel safari?

There are three significant places to take a camel safari in Rajasthan and I will briefly talk about my experiences with them and let you make your own conclusion. Taking a camel safari in Bikaner

Bikaner is a town not far from Jaisalmer that is also deep in the desert. However, I found my experience on a camel safari to be very underwhelming.

I spent most of my time in the back of a cart instead of on a camel and my journey took me through mostly farmland. It is a lot more built-up than Jaisalmer.

A local woman makes curd in Jaisalmer

Taking a camel safari in Osian

Osian is a small town north of Jodhpur. There is no infrastructure for tourism here and unless you take a luxury camel safari, it will be of questionable quality.

However, the plus side is the people of this town are not accustomed to tourists at all so you will get an authentic experience. aking a camel safari in Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer wins hands down because of the unique culture and incredible scenery. Simple and plain. There is excellent infrastructure and you are likely to be able to get very far off the tourist track.

The great Thar desert is mostly arid scrub hence the incredible wildlife. Camping out will give you a chance to see a little of it.

There are not very many sand dunes in Western Rajasthan. If your goal is to sleep on a dune, then Jaisalmer is definitely your best bet.

When is the best time to visit Jaisalmer?

There is only one answer and that is in the winter months. After the short monsoon, it will be cool and just as green as it will ever get. The winter months run from the end of October to the end of February.

Taking a camel safari in Jaisalmer may be the busiest at this time, but it is by far the most comfortable time to explore the desert.

It is also apparently the time when there are the least snakes. It’s too cold for them at night, so they will be hiding.

This is important if you are sleeping on the dunes after your long camel safari; you don’t want to have to worry about that. I almost stood on a viper in the middle of the night while going for a pee!

April and May are the worst months as there is a danger of sand storms that can last for days and it is blisteringly hot.

A sand storm in Jaisalmer city

Which place is famous for camel safari?

I want to be as helpful as possible when planning your dream trip to India. Therefore I have to answer all the questions people ask. Oddly this is one of them. So here goes. The magnificent sam sand dunes are the most famous stretch of desert and probably the most scenic. The advantages of visiting sam sand dunes

Sam sand dunes are incredibly popular with tourists and for a good reason. It is a beautiful set of dunes with a road all the way to them. You can be on a camel in time for dinner, making it perfect for those on a schedule.

Gary mason kissing a camel

The disadvantages of visiting sam sand dunes

Its proximity to both Jaisalmer and Khuri makes it incredibly popular. You will have to share your experience with lots of other travellers.

The Sam sand dunes are unquestionably beautiful, but it is not for me. I like to take my trips deep into the desert. hat do you wear to a camel safari?

The burning Rajasthani sun is piecing on the skin, so it is essential to cover up as much as possible. I know it is not what you want to hear, but it is the reality.

Whatever you decide to wear should be as thin as possible. Many travellers wear the Shanti Shanti clothes available in Jaisalmer. In truth, they are ideal as they are cheaply made and super light. Oh and some of them actually look pretty good to be fair.

Gary Mason having a campfire in the desert of Rajasthan

How far is the desert from Jaisalmer?

This is also a frequently asked question for some reason? First of all, Jaisalmer is in the bloody desert? There are 360 degrees of it. However, if you were wondering where is best to do your camel safari, I recommend going past those massive turbine farms.

As beautiful as the landscape is, it will probably hamper your experience. This camel safari may cost a little more as they have to take you quite far. However, it is well worth the extra trust me. aisalmer Top attractions

Now let’s look at Jaisalmer’s top attractions aside from a desert safari tour. This magical part of Rajasthan certainly has a lot to offer a tourist.

Jaisalmer desert national park

Jaisalmer Desert National Park is about 40 km away from Jali. It is spread across 3162 square kilometres. Located at the border between Jaisalmer and Pakistan the scenery here is incredible.

It has craggy rock walls, compacted lakes and fixed dunes. The dunes cover approximately 20% of the territory of this park. he wildlife of Jaisalmer Desert national park

Despite Jaisalmer desert national park being in a very arid slice of India, it is home to an impressive array of wildlife.

I personally have seen chinkara, hyena, desert fox, great Indian bustard, saw-scaled viper, bee-eaters and desert owlets.

There is also some pretty impressive desert vegetation here. It is far from simply dunes. In fact, the sand dunes only equate to about 20% of the park.

You can find many cacti, desert plants and many thorned shrub species. The vegetation of the desert is quite unlike anything else you will find on the subcontinent.

A special note

I consider myself a pretty hardcore animal enthusiast, so I may be a little biased about my love of this place. So here is a link to Trip Advisor so you can see other travellers’ reviews of their experiences so you can make a more informed choice.

Checking reviews is also an excellent way to make the choice of who to book your camel safari tour with.

Jaisalmer city

Jaisalmer is a whimsical little city that shimmers in the desert sunshine. The town centre is a maze of winding lanes and marketplaces crowned by a magnificent fort.

The golden city of India is sure to impress even the most hardened of travellers and I am sure you will find it worth the time to visit.

Sightseeing in this town will almost certainly take you more than one full day. There is too much to see, even at a push, so take your time.

Check out my in-depth blog on the 7 best places to visit in Jaisalmer for details.

How long should I go on a camel safari Jaisalmer?

Well, how much time can you dedicate to your desert safari tour? Some people can only spare a night on the dunes and some people only want that. It is tough to stay more than one night in such a hostile environment.  A sunset tour on the dunes

These tours typically start in either the early morning or late afternoon. After all, only a madman would head into the desert in the midday sun.

You will make a desert camp somewhere not far from the road. These are ideal for those on a time schedule who just want to experience the magic of a sunset in the desert.

Many tourists will not even stay the night and return to Jaisalmer after sunset. This kind of camel safari is short, sweet and cost-effective.

Rajasthani ladies pose in Jaisalmer

The problem with short camel safaris

These short camel safaris are not suitable for those of us who want an authentic experience. Any village you visit will be highly accustomed to tourists and the people will just see you as invaders who will give them chocolate.

Please don’t give the children chocolate as this is not helpful. There is no dental care and they are unlikely to brush their teeth regularly.

You will also have to share your sunset with masses of other tourists and this can be annoying, but where needs must, right?

A man leads his camels across the desert of Jaisalmer

A multiday camel safari

I strongly recommend a multiday camel safari tour if you can, as this will show you a clear picture of life in the Jaisalmer desert.

There are many landscapes to take in and you are much more likely to see wildlife. The remote location means the animals will be far less shy.

You will also probably enjoy your time in the villages more as the people will be more relaxed.

An experience here is deeply cultural It is unlike anywhere else in Rajasthan. There will be no cheesy folk dance or local people playing music for your INR you have come to expect in the tourist areas. You will experience Rajasthani culture in its raw form and it is a delight to explore.

Children pose for the camera in Jaisalmer desert

The problem with taking a multiday camel safari

After one full day in the desert on the back of a camel and one night sleeping in a tent, you will be worn down! The Rajasthani desert is brutal on your body!

Sand will get everywhere; unless you are in a luxury desert camp, there will be no chance to wash. Then the day starts again for another full day in the desert.

I strongly recommend not riding your camel for the whole safari as it will likely hurt your hamstrings in a whole new way. Instead, take your camel for a walk.

This is much better for photographing animals as your camera will rock side to side on the back of your trusted steed.

Booking your desert safari

There are three ways to book your desert safari and I will now go over what they are and clearly outline what I recommend. You can count on this being utterly unbiased advice, given from multiple safaris.

Most of us will want to go into the desert on the back of a camel after visiting India’s golden city . Some of us will be going just for a sunset on the dunes. Some of us will be taking multiday safaris into the wild.

Aerial shot of the Thar desert Jaisalmer

A desert Jeep safari

First of all, I want to talk a little about jeep safaris. There is also an option to take a jeep for those who do not fancy taking a camel ride across the dunes for days on end. Advantages of a Jeep safari in Jaisalmer

You can cover far more ground since you are not moving on a camel at about five miles an hour. You can visit villages far away and even drive around the desert national park.

Another clear advantage of visiting the Thar desert in the back of a jeep is that you can do the whole tour in air conditioning. Unsurprisingly the desert is baking hot outside of the peak season.

Indian desert foxes in Jaisalmer

Disadvantages of a Jeep safari in Jaisalmer

There are only limited roads in the desert, so you will have to deal with your limitations. A jeep safari will also cost a lot more as it’s well….. in a jeep.

Also, taking a jeep safari is not ideal for wildlife enthusiasts as the engine sounds will send the animals into hiding.

Camel safari in Jaisalmer Rajasthan

Booking your online safari

Many tourists will be booking their camel safari online. After all, we live in a digital age with all of the wonders of the internet.  Advantages of booking your safari online

You will be met from wherever you arrive and taken straight into Jaisalmer city. You will avoid the painful hassle of Jaisalmer and go straight onto the sand dunes. Doing this is ideal for those with limited time and a little cash to burn.

stripped hyena Rajasthan

Disadvantages of booking your online safari

You will have a fixed itinerary and no room to change your plan. It is also costly to book your trip to the Jaisalmer desert online as you will invariably pay a middleman.

Booking your safari in Jaisalmer

There are many places to book your desert safari in Jaisalmer and the rates are very competitive. Camel safaris also vary significantly in quality, so find out what is included.

Remember, some safari tours include a luxury tent and are very comfortable. Some safaris end with you sleeping in a hole in the dunes. So do some research.

friendly camel driver in Jaisalmer

Advantages of booking your safari in Jaisalmer

There is plenty of competition for you to get on a desert safari tour from Jaisalmer city. You can shop around and take your time for the best deals.

It will also be way cheaper than booking online. Booking your tour in Jaisalmer will save you lots of INR. This method is excellent for those on a budget. Disadvantages of booing your safari in Jaisalmer

Having nothing booked will mean you have to deal with the hassle of finding somewhere. That means dealing with lots of smooth-talking con men. What’s more, you will have to do it in the baking desert sunshine.

village in the Thar desert of Jaisalmer

Booking your camel safari in Khuri

Khuri is a tiny village outside Jaisalmer and is an alternative base to the city. You will already be in the heart of the desert and its proximity to the Sam sand dunes makes it popular with both domestic and international tourists. Advantages of booking your safari in Khuri

No one who visits Khuri will not be planning a camel safari on the dunes. You can find everything from luxury tents to quaint homestays. That means competitive prices and since you are already in the action, you will not have to travel so far into the desert.

Young girl collecting fire wood Rajasthan

The disadvantages of booking your safari in Khuri

There are only a limited number of companies operating from this tiny village and that will take away your bargaining power. It can also feel very pushy here, leading to a poor experience. What is the cost of a camel safari in Jaisalmer?

Honestly speaking, it depends mainly on what level of comfort you expect from your desert adventure. Luxury outfits will set you back a pretty penny but if it is what you want then go nuts.

Personally, I like a more local experience, although it is obviously tougher on your body. Not only will there be no washing at the end of the day, but you will also have to poo in the sand!

However, sleeping out on the dunes and looking up at the stars as your camel driver cooks your dinner over a campfire has to be one of the most memorable events of my whole life.

7 Incredible places to visit in Jaisalmer

Check what’s included on your safari!

Many people on the road complained Jaisalmer camel or jeep safaris were ripping them off. You must have everything you need for your camel safari.

That is why they tend to be an all-inclusive affair since there is no option to take your business elsewhere. You should therefore ask lots of questions in advance of booking.

When booking a camel safari in Jaisalmer or anywhere else, you must know there will be plenty of food and water. Having sufficient bedding in the winter is also vital as it can freeze at night. My personal recommendation for booking a camel safari in Jaisalmer

I love to take camel safaris and I always use the same company. I book all packages through Hotel Desert in Jaisalmer as they have never let me down.

There has never been a time when I did not enjoy my experience, so I recommend them to you. I only have one recommendation for your camel safari, but it’s one you can trust.

The price per person is very reasonable and the local guides always take good care of the clients. Check out my blog on Jaisalmer for details.

How can I reach Jaisalmer?

Jaisalmer is in the far reaches of western Rajasthan and your camel safari will take you even further off the map. All roads end here. So how do you get to this remote corner of the universe? Arriving at Jaisalmer desert by air

Jaisalmer is now connected by plane; if you are in a hurry, this can make a world of difference.

The costs are not overly high and you can easily book from any of India’s budget airlines. However, I recommend shopping around for the best price.

This option will undoubtedly leave you more time for your Jaisalmer tour and save you from making your way across the Thar desert on public transport.

Arriving at Jaisalmer desert by train

Jaisalmer is well connected to New Delhi by direct train. These trains all stop at Jaipur and Jodhpur.

Getting the train is both fast and convenient as you can come from the big city to the dunes of the Thar desert overnight.

However, Jaisalmer is at the end of the line and getting away by train leaves you with just a few options. Getting to Jaisalmer by train is still the most comfortable way.

Arriving in Jaisalmer by bus

There are many buses both government and private that operate out of Jaisalmer. Private buses will be more comfortable as getting stuck in traffic in the desert sunshine can be absolute torture.

However, the public bus stand is close to the fort’s entrance so you will not have to haggle for a taxi if you arrive there. It is ideal for those of us on a budget.

Busses are both frequent and reliable, making getting the bus to and from Jaisalmer a solid option.

Camel Safari in Jaisalmer: The Ultimate Checklist

Home » Asia » India

The main reason people go to Jaisalmer, an ancient Fort city, is to ride a camel through the rolling sand dunes of the Thar Desert. Some will tell you this is “too touristy”, but not me! I loved every bit of it. Although, I do hate to think that someone would come all the way to Jaisalmer and only do the safari. Jaisalmer has much more to offer , so give yourself adequate time. I will share my experience with a camel safari in Jaisalmer and what I would do different next time.

PS: check out my two-week Rajasthan itinerary  to make sure you don’t miss anywhere cool.

Camel Safari in Jaisalmer: Booking

There are loads of companies offering safaris and every hotel can hook you up with a guide but hotels are often taking a commission. I suggest comparing prices online to what people are telling you in shops and hotels. You can get very very cheap ones, but I randomly booked through Royal Hotel for 1500 rupees through the Khurri dunes. This was over my budget at the time, but I had met a friend who had pre-booked with them and couldn’t change it.

If you want to book ahead here are the top camel safari tours from Getyourguide and Viator, the two biggest booking sites for tours in India. Read the reviews before booking to see if there were any problems on the tour. I’m only linking to the top reviewed best ones!

This is an overnight camel safari on Viator for $43 USD. They will pick you up and drop you off from your hotel. Snacks, dinner, and the next day breakfast are included. There is a “departure tax” not included which is payable to the Government for going into the desert.

If you want the camel ride but don’t want to sleep out there, you can look at this much more expensive tour which is $266 and is a day tour of the city’s top attractions and a camel ride into the desert. This is really expensive for a day tour in India, so only book this if you are rich lol, because you can get better deals in town!

jaisalmer camel safari tips

Most tour itineraries look like this: ride to the middle of the desert, watch the sunset, go to a setup shack for dinner, ride back to a nice high dune for bedtime on a cot, wake up for sunset, and ride back.

Riding a camel is mainly easy, but accidents can happen, just read this story from Liz over at Young Adventuress , who seriously injured herself. I have compiled an ultimate checklist for you to make sure you are readily prepared for your safari.

jaisalmer camel safari tips

  • Research the companies and dunes. Know which dunes interest you, and which are overrun with people. Khurri are meant to be less full, and we did only see one other group while out. I would highly recommend it. I’m told the Sam Sand dunes were more crowded, but don’t know from experience.

jaisalmer camel safari tips

  • If you arrange a tour while there, before agreeing, make sure you know what is included. How many hours will you walk into the desert before stopping? Is dinner included? We went 2.5 hours. You don’t need to go further. Your bum will hurt. The scenery won’t change. Will you each get your own camel? Sharing would be boring, so make sure you have your own adorable clumsy animal to ride.

jaisalmer camel safari tips

  • Don’t drink a bhang lassi before you ride a camel or you may come down with “Pakistani Paranoia” a medical term that doesn’t exist, but should when your guide has “that’s Pakistan” and the U.S. State Department has just sent an e-mail saying citizens should stay clear for recent threats… Lots of tourists drink bhang before so they can have “a magic carpet ride”, just make sure they don’t make it too strong and ruin your safari.
  • Wear sunscreen and take sunglasses.

jaisalmer camel safari tips

  • You can buy beer from the sand-tout! He will come out of nowhere with cold beverages at indecent prices. Bring some extra cash for that, but beware things “go missing” at night in the desert.

jaisalmer camel safari tips

  • While on your camel, you’ll want a silky scarf to cover your head. The sun beats down on you like a hammer. Because you’re in India, your body will be mostly covered, so make sure you wear something breezy. When I was there it was well over 100 degrees during the day.
  • Wear sandals but take socks for night. Your guides will lay out cots, blankets, and pillows for you (make sure this is agreed upon prior) and it gets very cold at night. If you have to walk to pee or watch the sunrise you won’t want to barefoot. Desert sands catch the cool breeze from the Himalayas at night, and can’t hold onto the sun’s daily heat.  There are also big beetles and scorpions in the sand.

jaisalmer camel safari tips

  • Along that line, take warm clothes. It will shock you how chilly it gets.
  • Dinner was provided for our group at a nearby village, as is it for most. Make sure your guides agree to feed you, and even then take a snack if you wish. We even got a fire and dance show.

jaisalmer camel safari tips

  • I took wet wipes. You won’t be able to shower after your safari. You’ll be sweaty with a fine layer of sand stuck to you. Before bed, I washed up a little bit and I even brought my toothbrush and brushed with bottled water.
  • Your guide might tell you it’s so fun to gallop on the camel. My guide called “Halia”, my camels name in these high-pitched noises, and Halia was off on a nice jog. Have you ever seen a camel run? It’s like their legs just have no joints and flop around. It is bumpy. Camels are taller than you might imagine (10 feet!) and falling off while one’s running wouldn’t be ideal. On top of that, it could give you a “saddle sore”. Why does no one warn you of this before a camel ride? I had a sore coccyx for a week!

jaisalmer camel safari tips

  • Get lots of photos! Camels are super cute. I didn’t see one “spit” like they warn. Mine was extra lovable even though she got a little out of hand a couple times. They are such cool animals!

  • Relax and take in the AMAZING sunset and sunrise. I’ve traveled a fair amount and I have NEVER seen the day change like this. It’s really something, and if you’re considering doing the safari, it’s worth it just to see the red sunrise and sunset over the barren sand dunes. Don’t fall asleep too quickly, because the sky is almost always clear and stargazing is a must.

If I could do it again:

I would not choose somewhere that has you ride to a village to eat. I would go with a guide that cooks over an open fire. It sounds so much more badass and probably would taste better than what I had!

Essential Travel Tips for your Rajasthan Trip

Excellent set of pictures again. Looks like the camel safari was fun. It does get chilly in the night.

' src=

You look great on a camel. I can see you doing your shopping in Goa ridding that camel. Maybe all the traffic would give you right-of-way.

' src=

hahah wouldn’t that be funny!

' src=

That looks so much fun! How do you manage to look so ladylike on a big camel?!

haha do I? I didn’t feel very lady-like at all!

' src=

Absolutely wonderful, I would love to stay under the stars once. And your tips are super.

Thanks Mridula!

' src=

Aaaah looks so amazing! I would be a bit freaked out by the scorpions in the sand though, and snakes! Fears worth facing though I’m sure for an incredible experience!

Exactly :) I hope you get to try it out some day!

' src=

That looks amazing. When I was young I lived in Zambia and did a short safari on a elephant. Amazing but not comfortable. I can’t believe how beautiful India looks in your pictures

Thanks Rebekah, I’m not a great photographer, but India is so pretty you don’t have to be!

' src=

There’s something so exotic about camels and deserts, probably the little bit of my Bedouin DNA pumping whenever i see photos like yours… How do they treat the animals out there?

You are part Bedouin- now that is exotic!! how cool :) It seems as though they treat them fine but I know nothing of camels… they never hit them or anything. It was very hot but I think camels like that lol. I don’t think they are as kind as the elephants in the south of INdia.

' src=

Hey, these are great photos of Jaisalmer. I believe that this was a funny and interesting tour. Would like to do the same one day.

' src=

Oh I feel your pain re the camel sore. I had one too when I went on a camel safari in Morocco. As a nurse what treatment do you suggest then? :-)

Well this nurse didn’t put 2 and 2 together, and thought at first that I must have ringworm on my tail bone…. derr. ha ha ha! But I just moisturized so it didn’t scab :)

' src=

Reading your experiences and tips made me remember my desert safari in Jaisalmer. Did it cost you Rs.1500 for an overnight safari? It cost me Rs.4000 for just an evening safari! (I booked it from Hotel Deep Mahal in the fort)

Yes 1500 for an overnight! To be honest, I think that western backpackers get pretty low rates because since we’re on a tight budget we really negotiate. But 1500 was a lot I thought considering the budget I was on which was 1000 a day. Many other options were only 600 for overnights- but a friend had already paid for this 1500 one and I wanted to go with her. 4000 is SOOO much!!!

' src=

Well, most of that sounds fun. I think it would be a lot more fun if it was more personal, like you said, with someone who just knew the place and could cook. I’ve always thought safaris would be fun–at least for the most part. I’m sure they can be very trying at times!

Yes it is so important to make sure that you go with a group that has a knowledgable guide!

' src=

I just randomly found your blog and I LOVE it! You have a new loyal follower in me, and will refer back to your site when I go to India :) You provide good detailed info, and I like your style! I will most likely travel on my own to India when I go, (I am female,) and would love to do a camel safari. Would it be safe for me to do an overnight camel safari on my own?

wow thanks victoria! It would be safe in my opinion if you go with a reputable guide, but better that you find a group. Most often, there will be a group you join because the guide won’t make enough money just taking one person. So you can tell the guide you want to join another group no problem.

' src=

Beautiful pictures from the safari, especially the sunset ones! thank you for sharing the tricks on how to get good deals on safaris! ;) we are planning of visiting Jaisalmer soon! Cant wait to get on those cute camels and tour the dessert!

Hope you have a blast! they do hurt your bum tho so be careful of when the run haha

' src=

Hi! I’m planning to go to India in March with my boyfriend and your blog has been my most trusted source. I’m currently teaching English in Thailand and I’ve had some bad experiences with some elephant sanctuaries/the ethics of animal tourism. I’m super conflicted because I’m really interested in a camel safari. How did the treatment of the camels seem and would you recommend any companies over another in this regard? Thank you!

Hi Garnet I’m glad he blog is helping you :) You’re right Thailand is a bit notorious for it’s bad elephant treatment :( In my opinion, the camel safari wasn’t bad to the animals.. camels aren’t broken like elephants are and have been used to ride just like horses since the beginning! So, I don’t know the right answer but that’s how I feel about it.

' src=

I have to ask: was everyone just casually peeing in the sand at will? I could see my incessantly water drinking and pea sized bladder self having a real problem with wanting to hop off my camel and pee every hour. How did that work?

Haha yes people were ;)

' src=

Thanks for the tips. I am taking my daughter for 6 month adventure around india soon and camel safari is definately in the agenda. you mentioned a few things I hadn’t considered which is very much appreciated. Also really looking forward to exploring jaisalmer.

wow that’ll be quite the adventure! That’s amazing – have fun!

' src=

Hiii. Where did you keep your valuables (passport, wallet, phone, etc) while you were on the tour? We’ll be in Jaisalmer in NOVEMBER, so excited!

I took it all with me in my little side purse which I sleep with on trains etc in India so had it in my cot with me! If you are at a nice hotel they can probably lock your passport up, but it’s a pretty casual ride out and not too much chance of it getting ruined.

' src=

Hey Any suggestions for how to book an overnight camel safari? My husband and I are travelling to India next month, and we’d like to do this, but we don’t want to pay 1500 rupees. Any suggestions?

It’s best to find something once you are there and negotiate :)

' src=

Hey girl, will it be took cold to do a camel safari during december??

I’m not sure as I was there in October. I don’t think so for the day time but at night it gets cold so if you do it bring socks and warm clothes. I know backpackers go at that time, it’s still peak season in Rajasthan so should be fine.

Do you have any specific recommendations for companies to use for the desert safari? Or should we just wing it when we get to Jaisalmer?

Sorry I don’t it’s been so long now.. usually the guesthouses/hotel will have lots of pamphlets. wish I could help more!

' src=

Camel safari is really an awesome experience, I went to Jaipur and Jodhpur for 4 days few years back. That time I was in Delhi and the tour was planned during a long Holidays. First day was nice and then same night we traveled to Jodhpur. We had a plan to stay there for two nights then would return to Jaipur. So after having dinner we were walking outside the hotel, some tourists said you are not going to to Jailsalmir? Then what was the point to come in Rajasthan. We all nodded and booked bus tickets and same night we traveled to Jailsalmir. We enjoyed local site seeing and then camel safari, After that we were too tired for staying that night in tent in dessert. So we came back to hotel, packed our luggage and catch train to Jodhpur. Next day we spent in Jodhpur and in the evening we had train to Delhi. I mean it was a terrific tour and we all 4 nights we traveled by train or bus.Ha ha. For every location we rented hotel room for few hours only. Most memorable tour of my life.

HOW TO BOOK OVERNIGHT CAMEL SAFARI IN JAISALMER

It will come as no surprise that Jaisalmer is bursting at the seams with tour operators organising the desert camel safari experience.   It can, therefore, be an overwhelming task when choosing the right one.   Thankfully we had been recommended Trotters Jaisalmer ahead of our visit and we were not disappointed.

Trotters are a relatively small establishment; however, you only have to look at their trip advisor reviews to see they are a reputable company.   Trotters offer the best desert safari in Jaisalmer , as theirs leads you through the most remote areas of the desert.   We would highly recommend Trotters for your camel safari experience.

HOW LONG IS THE CAMEL SAFARI IN JAISALMER?

The standard camel safari packages include 1 or 2 nights in the Thar desert.  This being said, Trotters can accommodate anywhere up to 21+ days. We opted for a 1 day, 1-night safari and for us, that was enough time. Although the experience is magical, it can also be uncomfortable at times . Be sure to know what you’re signing up for before you commit. In the itinerary below, we will share an honest review of our experience so you know what to expect.

OUR JAISALMER DESERT SAFARI EXPERIENCE

Day 1 – jaisalmer to dune camp.

Our camel safari experience commenced around lunch time when we were collected by the Trotter company jeep.   Accompanied by a group of 6 other travellers, we sped off on our journey into the desert .   Before long, the sandstone architecture of the city had been replaced with arid golden landscapes .   While a brisk, cool breeze filtered through the windows of the jeep; the heat mirage rippling on the road confirmed the soaring temperatures waiting for us outside.

Around 1 hour had passed when we arrived at our first destination, the ‘Serene Oasis’.   The giant watering hole once served as the only water supply to the local villages . This means that some villagers would have had to walk for hours to gather water for their families.   Thankfully the villages now have alternative water sources; however, there are other inhabitants of the desert who take advantage of the generous water supply.   Thirsty camels have to drop to their knees when the water levels are low. Though surprisingly, they didn’t seem to have the hump about it!   (boom boom…)

"jaisalmer desert safari"

Soon it was time to head to the next stop, ‘Khaba Fort’.  With the fort possessing  a compelling history, it made for  a nice addition to the itinerary.   The fort was once inhabited by the Paliwal Brahmins but was mysteriously abandoned some 200 years ago .   Today, laid in ruins, the fort & village are consumed by an eerie solitude.

MEETING MICHAEL JACKSON (MY CAMEL)

After exploring the fort and admiring the views, it was finally time to meet our camels.  When we arrived they were impressively dressed and ready to go.   Much to my dismay, I was the first up to mount my camel, ‘Michael Jackson’.   It was my first time riding a camel, and so I was not prepared for what came next. ‘Michael’ stood back legs first, and as he lurched me forwards I almost catapulted into the horizon (no exaggeration..)!

"trotters jaisalmer"

Once the group was ready, our guides gave the signal to commence the safari.   The camels trotted forward in perfect unison, and it was clear they knew the route like the back of their hoof.   It was mid-afternoon by this point, and the sun was unforgiving. We were thankful we had come well prepared with sunscreen and shawls .

As we walked through arid farmland and scrubland, our guides provided interesting facts about the camels.   (Did you know they can drink up to 40 gallons of water in one go?)   This was educational but also served as a welcome distraction from our numb legs and sore butt.   It has to be said that riding a camel is not the most comfortable of experiences .   Thankfully, the journey to camp is no longer than 2 hours.

A SUNSET TO REMEMBER

Soon enough, the setting sun projected a magical golden hour glow over the landscapes.   With the sand dunes visible in the distance it felt like a tale from ‘1001 Nights’ .

We arrived at camp just in time to catch the sun setting over the dunes.  At the same time, we were  welcomed warmly by the team, with delicious local snacks & traditional chai.   There was even ice cold beers available at an extra cost .   In the hours before dinner, we chatted among our new-found friends and enjoyed the extraordinary experience.

overnight desert safari jaisalmer

As darkness fell, the campfire roared into life, and the alluring smell of Indian cuisine had us all feeling hungry.   The team had prepared a feast of freshly prepared curry, dahl, rice, and chapati.   The food was delicious, and we happily accepted the refills that just kept on coming.   When we could finally eat no more, the guides transformed random equipment from the camp into instruments.   With a blanket of stars above us, the tantalising sounds of traditional Indian music carried us into the night .

*Travellers Tip  – It was winter when we took part in the safari; therefore, the evening got extremely cold.   Thankfully Trotters provided plenty of duvets and blankets to keep us warm.

As we lay in bed gazing at a breathtaking view of the milky way, we eventually fell asleep with sho0ting stars in our eyes.

DAY 2 – DUNE CAMP TO JAISALMER

We woke early to a fresh morning and the first hint of sunlight creeping over the dunes.   The Trotters team were already preparing breakfast, and we were grateful for the hot pot of chai that was waiting for us.   With blankets in tow, we made our way to an isolated spot at the peak of the dunes. We continued to watch on in awe as the sky exploded into a burst of colour.   It was one of the most romantic sunrises we have ever encountered.

camel safari jaisalmer

By the time we got back to camp, a simple breakfast of porridge, fruit, and biscuits laid waiting for us.   As we ate, we enjoyed our final moments of peace and serenity in the desert. Soon it was time to gather up our things and commence our journey back to Jaisalmer.

We decided we would walk the 1-hour trek to meet the jeep, as we felt sore from the previous days’ journey.   With instruction from our guides, we were left to lead the camels through the desert.   The fast-paced trek was tough in the heat but also great fun.   We certainly felt like we’d had a good workout by the time we made it to the jeep.   After thanking our guides and saying our goodbyes, it was time to make our way back to the Golden City.

Although we didn’t have a room booked, Trotters kindly allocated us a room at their guesthouse so we could freshen up.   From start to finish, their hospitality was gracious and welcoming.   Thank you Trotters for a beautiful and memorable camel safari experience.

DO I NEED TO BOOK IN ADVANCE?

Trotters offer the option to book in advance on their website; however, it isn’t necessary.   We booked our safari just one day prior through the Trotters office located just outside of the fort in Jaisalmer.

Please note there are no washing or bathroom facilities after leaving Jaisalmer.  If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to us!

HAVE A BHANG-ING EXPERIENCE

You didn’t hear this from us; however, Jaisalmer is one of the few cities in India where it is legal to consume Bhang.    That is only if it  is purchased from the government-approved bhang shop.   For those of you who don’t know what Bhang is, it is an edible form of cannabis.   It is most commonly found in Bhang Lassis, a tasty beverage mixed with milk, sugar, and fruits.   Or alternatively in cakes or cookies.

We bought some cookies to take with us on safari.   Although we do not recommend taking Bhang in the heat, it made certainly helped make an enchanting evening spent under the stars, that little more magical.

Price-  1000 IDR for 10 cookies

WHERE TO STAY IN JAISALMER

Whether you are looking for luxury, mid-range, or budget, Jaisalmer is not short of great accommodation options.

Hostel  –  Swan Hostel   – One of only a few hostels in Jaisalmer, Swan Hostel is the top choice thanks to its convenient location and comfortable dorm or private rooms.

Budget Private  –  Bohemian Guesthouse  – We can personally recommend Bohemian Guesthouse, for affordable, clean & comfortable private rooms.   A 15-20 minute walk from the heart of the city, some  may be deterred by the location if you are planning just a short 2 day trip to Jaisalmer.

Luxury  –  Suryagarh Jaisalmer  – For a touch of luxury in Jaisalmer, we would choose the Suryagarh Jaisalmer. Located in the heart of the desert you can expect celebrity treatment at this 5* hotel.

For more places to stay in Jaisalmer, you can  check the latest prices HERE.

BEST TIME TO VISIT JAISALMER

The  best time to visit Jaisalmer is in winter (November to March)  when the weather is dry and not too hot.   We visited Jaisalmer in November and while you could still feel the burn of the desert heat , it was just about bearable for us pale-skinned folk.    It’s best to avoid Jaisalmer during the months of Summer or Monsoon.

I am glad to have chosen Trotters as our travel partner in Jaisalmer. They had everything arranged for us right from a camel safari to a desert camp. The food was nice and the staff was quite friendly. Definitely the best in town!

Taking a camel safari in Jaisalmer (twice).

  • By Sarah Steiner
  • Updated On July 29, 2023

Jaisalmer is a small Indian city in the far west of Rajasthan, only 130km from India’s border with Pakistan. But despite (or rather, because of) being a comparatively smaller and quieter city than some of India’s icons, it fast became our favourite.

Taking a camel safari in Jaisalmer was a huge highlight for us in India – so much so that we did it twice!

Choosing a camel safari

Although pretty much every hotel or business in town will happily book a camel safari for a commission, you want to make sure you book a good one and also one that is ethical – to the camels, and to its workers. We booked our Camel Safari through Padam at Wanderlust Guesthouse where we stayed in Jaisalmer, and I can’t recommend Wanderlust enough.

Our overnight safari cost 1850 INR per adult ($25 USD). There are various options available for differing lengths of time and choices for with or without an overnight stay.

What is included in the price?

  • Luggage storage in Jaisalmer (you only need a small backpack),
  • Pick up and drop off from your guesthouse,
  • An overnight desert safari near Jaisalmer,
  • Jeep transportation to and back from the desert with a couple of stops along the way,
  • Chai, water, dinner and breakfast.

Getting to the camels

We were picked up by jeep from the Wanderlust Guesthouse at 2:00pm and driven the 60km to the desert. Nabu, our driver, was a great guide in showing us stops en route to admire a natural desert oasis and explore an abandoned city.

camel safari in jaisalmer jaipur photos

We arrived at a small village to begin our trek, with the suddenly apprehensive recollection of just how tall camels are… and just how awkward they are to get on and hold onto when they stand up!

But our guides were great, and before we knew it we were all on board and ready to ride. For the first day I rode with Harry, but by day two he was confident and rode on his own while Oscar rode with me.

Traveling in India with kids and riding camels in Thar Desert with kids.

How long is the camel ride?

From the village, the camel trek took about 1.5 hours to get to our camp spot for the night. Although this sounds like a short amount of time; trust me, that’s a decent amount of time in a saddle. The camels plod along at a steady pace, and the trek passes through patches of low scrub and desert that could more aptly be named as plains arid with scrubby vegetation, before reaching more frequent dunes of sand.

These areas of sand dunes sometimes border makeshift paddocks and areas where farmers were tending to and herding goats, and it was interesting to see different aspects of village life and to wave hello as we went.

Plus, the most exciting thing was that we were actually riding camels… in the desert of India!

Staying the night

Camp for the night is literally a sheltered spot, where a small mud hut has been set up to store cooking utensils and bed frames; all a welcomed sight after an hour and a half in a camel saddle!

Family photo on camel safari in Jaisalmer with kids.

And bed for the night is quite literally, under the stars…

Our bed for the night on camel safari Jaisalmer with kids.

We loved the evening sun and the slow routine of getting the camels hobbled and set out for the night. The boys ran up and down the sand dunes, chasing the tracks of dung beetles and playing as camel herders across the dunes.

Camel safari in Jaisalmer with kids.

What about dinner?

Gavin and I enjoyed a beer and helped to make chapati for dinner on the campfire. The whole evening created some of our best memories from India. It felt so far from other times of travel and the busyness of the cities and tourist sights…

camel safari in jaisalmer jaipur photos

Our guides, Nabu, Gudu and Huna cooked an amazing dinner of dahl, aloo, chapati and rice over the campfire. They even finished off the evening by singing songs until bed time.

Waking up after sleeping underneath the stars on camel safari in Jaisalmer.

We did our camel safari in Jaisalmer in March, and it was cold outside at night. But the blankets provided are heavy duvets and we all snuggled up together – quite literally under a million stars and the post-full moon from Holi New Year.

On camel safari in Jaisalmer.

Waking up in the morning felt like the most unreal freedom. Our guides were up early too. Gudu headed out to track down our camels, and Huna had brought us a hot cup of chai before we even got out of bed! I am still to this day fairly sure that nothing could taste sweeter than a hot cup of chai at sunrise after a night of sleeping under the stars…

The kids with our guide on camel safari Jaisalmer.

Know before you go…

Going into the desert on a camel means being completely exposed to the sun with no cover. At night time in the desert the temperature drops big time. Dress for both extremes, and cover as much exposed skin as possible.  You will only need to take a small backpack, and if you are travelling with kids we found one backpack was plenty between us.

Depending on your safari, a jeep might follow or drive ahead while you ride the camels. They can transport a bag if you’d rather not wear it while riding.

Don’t forget to bring a torch of some sort for night time; especially as there is no toilet in the desert… and you will want to make the bathroom runs as far away from camp as possible!

What to bring on a camel safari in Jaisalmer

– Long sleeves and ideally long trousers , to cover as much skin as possible.

– Sunhat or scarf for the heat of the afternoon.

– Sunscreen.

– Shoes that are comfortable to ride in. A camel saddle doesn’t have stirrups like a horse saddle does.

– Long sleeved top and thermal outer layer for night time. We found it warm enough (in March) under the heavy blankets.

– Light waterproof rain jacket just in case. Rain is a possibility during the wet summer months. We didn’t need this but I was grateful for the extra layer to keep warm in the early morning. I wore my jacket plus neck buff and used my scarf as headwear…

Thats about it! Be prepared, and enjoy an adventure like no other !

Where else we stayed in India

Looking for where to stay in India is like starting the search for a needle in a haystack! But we have had some amazing accommodation in India. Here are some of our favourite places to stay in each city.

  • Kochi:   Hotel Abad Plaza [good location next to mall with supermarket. Multiple restaurants on site; huge buffet breakfast. Swimming pool. Note this hotel is not in the old city of Kochi ].
  • Varanasi:   Hotel Temple on Ganges [great location; basic rooms and restaurant. Close to Assi Ghat – good location to explore Varanasi from].
  • Jaisalmer:   The Wanderlust Guesthouse [AMAZING guest-house! We loved staying here and can highly recommend. Great rooms; rooftop restaurant overlooking the fort; awesome camel safaris!
  • New Delhi:   Hotel Hari Piorko [good location in the heart of the Main Bazaar, Delhi; close to restaurants and train station. No view from rooms].

Inside our room at Wanderlust Guesthouse in Jaisalmer. Are you wondering where to stay in India? Read our complete travel guide to India to know al the questions you have about travel in India for the first time.

  • Kolkata:   Hotel Golden Palace  [close to New Market with very friendly service and a great in-house room service restaurant].
  • Mumbai:   Gulf Hotel [good location in Colaba few mins walk to Gateway of India. Basic rooms (and very old elevator) and very basic breakfast included. Also  lots  of (questionably so?) mirrors].
  • Jodhpur:   Raj Mandir Boutique Homestay  [good location in Blue City, spacious room with small balcony inside Haveli style home. Tiny little doors, lots of unique decor and artefacts].
  • Jaipur:  Jaipur Haveli  [incredible old haveli home in heart of Jaipur. Highly recommend; beautiful rooms; great attention to detail and very friendly staff and owners].
  • Agra:   Aman Homestay  [very friendly family-run homestay with rooftop views of The Taj Mahal. Great rickshaw driver service and home cooked meals].
  • Delhi:  Smyle Inn  [extremely basic hotel in small back alley. Very friendly, helpful staff and simple breakfast included. Just off Main Bazaar].

What else can we say about India?

We LOVE India and can only highly, highly recommend you embrace the chaos. Embrace India; and get ready for what can truly only be described as the adventure of a lifetime…

Camel Safari in Rajasthan: Everything You Need to Know

Camel safari in Rajasthan

India Writer

Deserts are the highlight of Rajasthan, and the best way to experience such beauty is via a camel safari. Camel safari is nothing less than thrilling, exciting and an altogether fabulous way to get a taste of the rural desert life — as well as immerse in the local culture. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

Where to go for camel safari.

There are several places in Rajasthan where you can go for Camel Safari, and the best ones include Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Pushkar, and Jodhpur. Each of these places offer a unique and memorable experience .

Jaisalmer, the Golden City as it is often dubbed, is located in the heart of the Thar desert. Riding on a camelback through the rolling sand dunes of the Thar desert is an experience like no other. Also, about 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) west of Jaisalmer lies another best locale — the Sam Sand Dunes, which are characterized by tall sand dunes (about 30-60 meters) and almost no vegetation. This is the most popular place for safari, which makes it the most crowded as well. Nonetheless, camel safari here is fun! You can disembark at various points along the way and camp through the spectacular dunes.

Those who prefer to enjoy the desert landscape in peace and quiet may head to the dunes near Khuri village. These are lesser-known but most stunning sand dunes around Jaisalmer. While riding a camel here, you can experience the rustic desert life up-close, as the village is home to mud and straw huts and the village folks prefer living the traditional way.

Camel safari in Bikaner lets you pass through the tiny settlements in the area, including Naukh, Baru, Tadana, Kanasar and Mohangarh, among others. Should you wish to know about the colorful culture of the region, you can take a break in these tiny villages and talk to the locals, who are actually more than happy to narrate some of their famous folk tales — which are quite intriguing!

For a lively camel safari experience, visit Pushkar during the Pushkar Camel Fair, which is an annual camel and livestock fair that goes on for five days. A camel ride here takes you to the tiny hamlets in the area where you meet the indigenous tribes and know about the rustic way of living. Additionally, a ride here also presents you the best views of the Aravalli ranges (one of the world’s oldest mountain ranges), along with bewitching sunrises and sunsets.

There is no better way to explore a desert than sitting on the back of a camel

Camel safari can also be done in and around Jodhpur. One of the best spots here is Osian, an ancient town located in the Thar desert. This town is famous for its ancient temples from 8th to 11th centuries. You can stay at the Osian Sand Dunes Resort and Camp, which is perhaps one of the best hotels in the area. It provides safari rides, and in the evening, campfires along with folk music is also organised to make your trip a memorable one.

Other places, such as Udaipur and Mandawa also offer delightful, albeit short camel rides. In Udaipur, for instance, the ride starts from the magnificent Fateh Sagar Lake until the bustling markets. While in Mandawa, the ride takes you around the town and is perfect to see the architectural masterpieces of the place.

Best camel safari tours

Booking a camel safari is easy, pretty much every hotel in these locations has a partnership with a safari tour company, so they can book a safari tour for you, of course at a commission. You can also go for specialist tour companies. There are plenty of those out there offering this thrilling and exciting experience. A simple Google search will give you endless options. Take the quotes of different companies, meet their staff and know what all arrangements and facilities are on offer, and then book the best one.

Some of our recommendations include Desert Safari Camp Jaisalmer , Real Desert Man Camel Safari Jaisalmer , Trotters Independent Tours & Travels, Vino Desert Safari , Pushkar Camel Safari and Rao Bikaji Camel Safari . Almost all of these offer camping facilities, ranging from full service luxury camps to budget-friendly tents. Visitors can take part in all things Rajasthani — from savoring the traditional food to enjoying the cultural shows (everything is part of the package). The tours can be customized as per your needs and budget.

Seating and sleep camps in the desert

What is the cost and duration of ride?

Camel safari ranges from a few hours to whole day; or for up to two, four or seven days, with longer ones up to a month. Overnight options are also on offer (tour agencies will pick you up and drop you off from your hotel). Depending upon the duration and facilities, the cost of camel safari varies. It starts from INR 500 ($7.69) up to INR 2,500 ($38.43) per person, including meals. Prices can be negotiated.

Camel safari provides you an opportunity to experience the rural desert life

When to go?

The best time to go for a camel safari is between October and March when the weather is cool. It is possible to go for camel safari in the monsoon season (July to September) as well — there is little chance of rain and temperatures remain high. April to June (summer) are the worst months — the mercury level rises phenomenally, which makes it difficult to even walk on the sand, let alone camel safari! Additionally, try to take an early morning or evening camel safari: you’ll never forget the sunrise and sunset in the desert.

What to pack?

Meal and accommodation are available en route (just make sure this is agreed upon prior). Weather-wise, expect cold nights and warm sunny days, so carry sunglasses, cap/scarf, sunscreen, insect repellent, toilet paper, flash light, hand sanitizer, medical kit and some amount of cash, too.

Riding on camelback is one of the most memorable experiences you can have in the royal state

Tour Overview

Riding across the rippling, windswept desert on camel back and camping beneath the stars is one of the most remarkable and magical experiences you can have in India. Taking a camel safari would also allow you to see the rustic, rural desert life of India. While the desert might seem desolate, it is also surprisingly populous. Here's everything you need to know to prepare for your vacation.

Our luxury tents in Jaisalmer are the finest for accommodation in Jaisalmer, book our Camps in Jaisalmer are large and pleasant lodging, Luxury Camps in Jaisalmer are fully furnished with a clean and sanitary atmosphere and access to TV. Guests are given with the greatest Wifi service and power backup around the clock, as well as candle lightings in the best luxury setting. Camel Safari in Jaisalmer is a famous thing enjoyed by tourists.

Jaisalmer, in Rajasthan, is one such place that allows you to see the desert state in all of its brilliant colours, with palaces and expansive forts contrasting sharply with rough camel rides and immense sand dunes. The city lies situated within the famed Thar Desert.

The magnificent Jaisalmer Dekho Desert Camp is located among the Sam Sand Dunes. The posh Jaisalmer dekho desert camp in Jaisalmer has the great amenities and accommodation in the Sam sand dunes, luxury camps in Jaisalmer mixed with imaginative design exhibiting many of the skills and crafts of Marwar.

The Desert of Jaisalmer , in Rajasthan, is the most popular location for camel safaris in India. It is critical to examine which location is perfect for you in order to have the finest experience. The Sam sand dunes, which are unappealingly commercial and congested these days, attract the majority of tourists. The sand dunes surrounding Khuri hamlet in Desert National Park are more calm, yet they have begun to draw tourists. A Camel Safari Package from Jaisalmer would almost certainly include a stop at abandoned Kuldhara hamlet on the way to Khuri.

Bikaner, situated in Rajasthan, is a renowned destination for camel safaris. The desert, on the other hand, is not like as stunning as Jaisalmer. If you go anticipating undulating sand dunes, you'll be disappointed because they no longer exist. Safaris, on the other hand, are typically focused on visiting remote desert towns.

Camel safaris are also available at Osian, which is about an hour and a half north of Jodhpur on the way to Bikaner. Reggie's Camel Camp or Osian Sand Dunes Resort and Camp are also great places to stay. Osian's intriguing temples are an extra bonus. Manvar Desert Camp and Resort is an exotic desert alternative in Khiyansariya (between Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner).

Many camel safari companies will let you select your route, so you may choose whether to take the less trafficked or more touristic path. Make it specific. Otherwise, you'll most likely wind yourself in Jaisalmer with a bunch of other visitors near Sam or Khuri.

Wow! Just wow, it was a fantastic tour for all of us. Although our pick up was a bit delayed but once we reached the desert, it was so much fun. Our guide Swaroop was really great, he advised us on how to easily mount up the camel and was also very informative. Wonderful service from the team Go Rajasthan. They have been connected to us all throughout our trip.

Divakar

Excellent trip and great services is all I can say for them.
