Dominican Republic

Travel Advisory June 6, 2023

Dominican republic - level 2: exercise increased caution.

Reissued with updates to health information.

Exercise increased caution in the Dominican Republic due to crime.

Country Summary:  Violent crime, including armed robbery, homicide and sexual assault is a concern throughout the Dominican Republic. The development of a professional tourist police corps, institution of a 911 system in many parts of the country, and a concentration of resources in resort areas means these tend to be better policed than urban areas like Santo Domingo. The wide availability of weapons, the use and trade of illicit drugs, and a weak criminal justice system contribute to the high level of criminality on the broader scale.

Read the country information page for additional information on travel to the Dominican Republic.

If you decide to travel to the Dominican Republic:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
  • Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry.
  • Follow the advice of resort and tour operators regarding local safety and security concerns.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
  • Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter .
  • Review the Country Security Report for the Dominican Republic.
  • Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations.  Review the Traveler’s Checklist .

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Visas are not required for visits shorter than 30 days. Visit the  Embassy of the Dominican Republic  website for current visa information.

All visitors to the Dominican Republic are charged a $10 tourist card fee that is incorporated into airline charges. Cruise passengers must obtain a tourist card if they are disembarking for longer than 24 hours. Once used, the card allows for stays up to 30 days but can be extended at the General Directorate of Migration in Santo Domingo.

Contact the  Migration Department  in Santo Domingo for visa extension requests. Failure to request an extension will result in a fine at the airport upon departure. The fines range from approximately $55 USD for one month to as high as $1,555 USD for overstays of 10 years or more.

All passengers are required to fill out an  E-Ticket  or paper form when entering or exiting the Dominican Republic. If using E-Ticket, a new form is required for each entry and exit and the code generated upon form completion can be presented at the airport on a digital device.

Visitors must have a ticket entering and leaving the country, the financial means to pay for their stay, and an address in the Dominican Republic where they will be staying.

Exit Requirements for Children:  Minors (children under 18) who are citizens (including dual citizens) or legal residents of the Dominican Republic, if not accompanied by both parents or legal guardian(s), are required to present official proof of parental consent to travel. Please see the Dominican  Migration Department's  website for detailed instructions on the required documents.

HIV/AIDS Restrictions:  Some HIV/AIDS entry restrictions exist for visitors to and foreign residents of the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic has restrictions on granting residency to people with HIV/AIDS. Please verify information with the Dominican Republic’s  Migration Department  before you travel.

Yellow Fever Vaccine:  Proof of vaccination against yellow fever is required for travelers entering the Dominican Republic from Brazil. Similar requirements may apply to those traveling from other  countries with yellow fever risk .

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction ,  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Crime:  Crime is a threat throughout the Dominican Republic. Tourist destinations are generally more policed than metropolitan areas.

  • If robbed, hand over your personal belongings without resisting.
  • Do not carry or wear valuable items that will attract attention.
  • Be wary of strangers.
  • Travel with a partner or group if possible.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI   pages for information.

Dating App Robberies:  Several U.S. citizen travelers in the Dominican Republic have reported that they were robbed by people they met through popular online dating applications. If meeting with strangers, you should strongly consider meeting only in public places and avoiding isolated locations where crimes are most likely to occur.

Demonstrations:  Avoid areas of demonstrations and exercise caution if you are in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.

Victims of Crime:  Report crimes to the local tourist police (POLITUR) at 809-222-2026 or  911  and contact the U.S. Embassy at 809-567-7775. 911 is operational throughout the country apart from some areas located near the Haitian border. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care.
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police.
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent.
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion.
  • Provide a list of local attorneys.
  • Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution.
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport.

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact POLITUR (809-222-2026), the  National Police ( 809-682-2151), and the U.S. Embassy for assistance.

Sexual Assault:  Rape and sexual assault has been reported throughout the Dominican Republic, including at major resorts and hotels.

Notes for your safety:

  • U.S. citizens have been targeted with date rape drugs.
  • Sexual assault victims in the Dominican Republic should not expect the totality of assistance offered in the United States. Rape kits are often not available until the following morning and must be administered by Dominican authorities.
  • Victims often have to request medication to avoid transmission of STDs and reduce the chances of pregnancy.
  • Prosecution of a rape case moves forward very slowly. Dominican law may require the victim to return to the Dominican Republic at some stages of the judicial process.
  • Security outside of the resort area, including beach areas, is unpredictable, especially at night.

Best Practices:

  • Contact the police/hotel management if resort staff demonstrate unwanted attention.
  • Victims of sexual/other assault should contact the police and the Embassy. Insist that hotel management take immediate action by contacting the police.
  • In a resort, avoid secluded places. Always be accompanied by someone you know, even going to the restroom.
  • Do not consume alcoholic beverages alone or with new acquaintances. Do not leave drinks unattended.  Know your limits and help your friends/travelling companions to remain safe.
  • Shout for help immediately if threatened or made uncomfortable.
  • Report suspicious activity, including excessive friendliness by hotel employees, to hotel management, the U.S. Embassy, and local police.
  • Do not swim alone due to life-threatening undertows.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities may not commonly occur in all parts of the country. Hazardous areas and activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in or near major cities or major tourist zones. First responders may be unable to access areas outside of major cities or major tourist zones. The ability to provide urgent medical treatment may be limited. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more  information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website. Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking illegal drugs in the Dominican Republic are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines. Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage and  general information on legal assistance  for further information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, their possession they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See the following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report – see country reports
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTI Travelers:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in the Dominican Republic.

See our LGBTI Travel Information page and section 6 of our Human Rights report for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities:  The law in the Dominican Republic prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual or mental disabilities, but the law is not enforced consistently. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the United States. Accessible facilities, information, communication/access to services and ease of movement is limited in most parts of the country. Large resorts and Santo Domingo may have some generally accessible infrastructure, but travelers should not expect the level available in the United States.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

Disaster Preparedness:  Register with the Embassy on or before your arrival through our  travel registration website . In the event of a natural disaster or emergency, this will keep you informed. Additional information on  natural disasters and disaster preparedness  can be found on our website. Real Estate:  Property rights are irregularly enforced, and investors often encounter problems in receiving clear title to land. Consult a reputable attorney before signing documents or closing on any real estate transactions. Real estate investments by U.S. citizens have been subject to legal and physical takeover attempts. Absentee landlords and absentee owners of undeveloped land are particularly vulnerable. Consider purchasing title insurance. Scams:  Scammers often target elderly people by pretending to be a law enforcement official, an attorney, or a U.S. Embassy official, claiming that a loved one has been arrested overseas. The caller instructs the victim to wire money. Scammers sometimes impersonate family members, such as a scared grandchild. Contact the U.S. Embassy before wiring money to the Dominican Republic. When in doubt, try to contact your loved one directly.

For emergency services in the Dominican Republic, dial 911 or 809-202-2026 .

Ambulance services:

  • The training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards.
  • Ambulances are not present or reliable in most areas of the country. They are more reliable and available in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Punta Cana, and Puerto Plata.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas.  Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See  our webpage  for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the  Ministry for Public Health  to ensure the medication is legal in the Dominican Republic.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)

Air Quality:  Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a  list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities in general:

  • Public medical clinics lack basic resources and supplies.
  • Hospitals and doctors require payment “up front” prior to service or admission.
  • Private hospitals usually require advance payment or proof of adequate insurance before admitting a patient.
  • Be aware that some hotels, resorts, etc. have exclusive agreements with medical providers, which have costs associated and may limit your choices in seeking emergency medical attention.
  • Medical staff may speak little or no English.
  • Generally, in public hospitals only minimal staff is available overnight in non-emergency wards. Consider hiring a private nurse or having family spend the night with the patient, especially a minor child.
  • Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.
  • Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery

U.S. citizens have suffered serious complications or died during or after having cosmetic or other elective surgery.

If you are considering travel to the Dominican Republic for cosmetic surgery, be mindful of the following:

  • Have a medical evaluation from a U.S. doctor to determine if you are a good candidate for surgery.
  • Before travel, carefully research the doctor (e.g. qualifications, experience performing the surgery, complication rate) and credentials of the recovery facility you plan to use.
  • Share all health information (e.g. medical conditions, medications, allergies) with your doctor before your surgery.
  • Obtain international travel insurance that covers medical evacuation back to the United States and repatriation of remains. For more information, see:  https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/insurance .
  • See a travel medicine professional in the United States at least 4–6 weeks before your trip to discuss healthy travel and to learn about specific risks related to your surgery and travel. For more information on the risks of medical tourism, see:  https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/medical-tourism .
  • Your legal options in case of malpractice are very limited in the Dominican Republic.

Tap Water:  Tap water is unsafe to drink. Bottled water and beverages are considered safe. Please note that many restaurants use tap water for ice.

Adventure Travel

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Adventure Travel .

General Health

The following diseases are prevalent:

  • Tuberculosis
  • Chikungunya

Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Resources for Travelers  regarding specific issues in the  Dominican Republic .

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Driving conditions vary across the country. Drive defensively and with extreme caution.

Consider hiring a professional driver instead of driving yourself. You can hire licensed drivers who are familiar with local roads through local car rental agencies. In case of accidents, normally only the driver will be taken into custody. In 2019 six people died per day due to traffic accidents in the Dominican Republic.

Frequent hazards include:

  • other drivers not using headlights and/or taillights after dark
  • animals in the road
  • missing manhole covers and large potholes
  • uneven road surfaces
  • scooters and motorcycles driving erratically and splitting lanes
  • driving on sidewalks or against traffic
  • intersections without stop signs
  • unregulated and congested traffic patterns
  • speeding or the running of stoplights
  • heavy urban traffic

Traffic Laws:  Traffic laws are not enforced consistently. After an accident causing serious injury or death, authorities will often take the driver into custody, even if the driver is insured and appears to have not been at fault. Detentions frequently last until a judicial decision has been reached or until a waiver has been signed by the injured party.

Seat belts, and helmets for motorcyclists, are required by law. Violators may be fined. There are no child car seat laws. Police stop drivers using cell phones without a hands-free device.

Public Transportation:  Public transportation includes a metro and public bus system as well as shared bus or van taxis known as “guaguas” (converted vans or microbuses, often without doors). Guaguas run regular routes within urban areas and between towns in the countryside. Public buses and guaguas operating in the capital do not meet U.S. safety standards. Avoid unregulated taxis, which also often lack basic safety features. Use a reputable taxi service, either one recommended by your hotel or a well-known, vetted company. Rideshare services such as Uber are available in many parts of the country. Private bus lines travel between large cities and to popular tourist destinations.

See our Road Safety page for more information. Visit the website of the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism and INTRANT (Instituto Nacional de Transito y Transporte Terrestre) the national authority responsible for road safety.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of the Dominican Republic’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s website.   FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel:  The U.S. Coast Guard has concerns about the security practices in the ports of the Dominican Republic. Until those concerns can be addressed, the Coast Guard advises that Mariners and passengers on commercial vessels traveling through the ports of the Dominican Republic should exercise caution.

Mariners planning travel to the Dominican Republic should also check for  U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the  NGA broadcast warnings .

Introduction

Welcome to the beautiful Dominican Republic! Whether you are planning a vacation, business trip, or a visit to see family and friends, there are a few essential things you need to know before entering the country. One of these requirements is obtaining a tourist card, which allows you to stay in the Dominican Republic for a specified period of time.

A tourist card, also known as a tourist visa, is an official document issued by the Dominican government that grants visitors permission to enter and stay in the country for up to 30 days. It is a mandatory requirement for most travelers, with a few exceptions such as citizens of visa-exempt countries or those with a valid visa for the Dominican Republic.

Obtaining a tourist card is a straightforward process, and this article will guide you through the different steps involved in acquiring one. Whether you choose to purchase it online before your trip or upon arrival at the airport, we will provide you with all the necessary information to make the process as smooth as possible.

So, if you’re ready to embark on your Dominican adventure, let’s dive into the step-by-step process of purchasing a tourist card!

Step 1: Determine if you need a tourist card

The first step in purchasing a tourist card for the Dominican Republic is to determine if you actually need one. As mentioned earlier, there are a few exceptions to the requirement of obtaining a tourist card.

Citizens of some countries are exempt from needing a tourist card for stays of up to 30 days. These countries include Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Israel, Japan, Peru, South Korea, and Uruguay. Citizens of these countries can enter the Dominican Republic without a tourist card and are allowed to stay for up to 30 days under a visa exemption agreement.

However, it is essential to check the latest travel advisories and regulations before your trip, as visa policies can change. Always verify with the Dominican Republic embassy or consulate in your home country to ensure you have the most up-to-date information regarding entry requirements.

If you are not a citizen of a visa-exempt country, or if you plan to stay in the Dominican Republic for longer than 30 days, you will need to obtain a tourist card before you arrive.

Now that you’ve determined whether or not you need a tourist card, let’s move on to the next step: deciding on the type of tourist card you require.

Step 2: Decide on the type of tourist card

Once you have established that you need a tourist card for your trip to the Dominican Republic, the next step is to decide on the type of tourist card that is suitable for your stay. There are two main options: the Tourist Card and the Tourist Card Plus.

The standard Tourist Card is valid for stays of up to 30 days and costs $10 USD. This is the most common option for travelers who plan to stay within the regular 30-day tourist visa period. The Tourist Card can be purchased online or at the airport upon arrival.

On the other hand, if you plan to stay in the Dominican Republic for longer than 30 days, you will need to opt for the Tourist Card Plus. This option allows for an extended stay of up to 60 days and costs $20 USD. Similar to the regular Tourist Card, the Tourist Card Plus can be obtained online or at the airport.

It’s important to consider the duration of your stay and choose the appropriate tourist card type accordingly. If you are unsure about the length of your stay, it is advisable to opt for the Tourist Card Plus to avoid any complications or the need for an extension later on.

Now that you’ve decided on the type of tourist card you need, let’s move on to the next step: purchasing the tourist card online.

Step 3: Purchase the tourist card online

Purchasing the tourist card online is a convenient and efficient option, allowing you to complete the process before your trip and save time upon arrival in the Dominican Republic.

To purchase the tourist card online, you can visit the official website of the Dominican Republic’s immigration authorities or use a trusted third-party service. These online platforms provide a straightforward application process and secure payment options.

Here’s how to purchase the tourist card online:

  • Visit the official website or a reputable third-party platform offering tourist card services.
  • Locate the section for purchasing the tourist card or visa.
  • Fill out the required information, such as your personal details, passport information, and travel dates.
  • Review the information you provided to ensure its accuracy.
  • Proceed to the secure payment gateway to pay the tourist card fee. Accepted payment methods typically include credit or debit cards.
  • Once the payment is successful, you will receive a confirmation email with your tourist card. Print a copy of the tourist card or save it on your mobile device to present upon arrival in the Dominican Republic.

It is advisable to complete the online purchase of the tourist card well in advance of your travel date to avoid any last-minute complications. Ensure that you have a stable internet connection and all the necessary documents and information at hand when filling out the online application.

Now that you’ve successfully purchased the tourist card online, let’s move on to the next step: purchasing the tourist card at the airport.

Step 4: Purchase the tourist card at the airport

If you prefer not to purchase the tourist card online or have missed the opportunity to do so, don’t worry! You can still obtain the tourist card upon arrival at the airport in the Dominican Republic.

The process of purchasing the tourist card at the airport is straightforward and can be completed before or after going through immigration. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Upon arrival at the airport, locate the area designated for tourist card purchase. This area is usually located near the immigration counters or in a separate booth.
  • Take a queue ticket if required and wait for your turn.
  • Once it’s your turn, approach the counter and inform the officer that you need to purchase a tourist card.
  • Provide the necessary information, such as your personal details, passport information, and travel dates, as requested by the officer.
  • Pay the tourist card fee, which is typically $10 USD for the standard Tourist Card or $20 USD for the Tourist Card Plus. Cash payment in USD is usually accepted, but it’s advisable to carry smaller denominations to avoid any issues.
  • Upon payment, the officer will provide you with the tourist card. Make sure to keep it in a safe place, as you will need to present it upon departure from the Dominican Republic.

It’s important to note that there may be multiple counters available for purchasing the tourist card, so if one counter has a long queue, you can check if there are other counters that might have shorter wait times.

Now that you’ve successfully purchased the tourist card at the airport, let’s move on to the next step: filling out the tourist card form.

Step 5: Fill out the tourist card form

Once you have obtained the tourist card, whether it was purchased online or at the airport, the next step is to fill out the tourist card form. This form contains important information that the Dominican Republic immigration authorities require for entry and exit purposes.

Here’s what you need to do to fill out the tourist card form:

  • Take out your passport and the tourist card.
  • Locate the designated section on the tourist card form for filling in your personal information.
  • Provide accurate and complete information, such as your full name, passport number, date of birth, nationality, and gender.
  • Fill in the details regarding your travel dates and the purpose of your visit to the Dominican Republic.
  • Review the form to ensure that all the information you provided is accurate and matches the details on your passport.
  • Sign and date the form at the designated space.

It is essential to take your time and double-check the information you provide on the tourist card form to avoid any errors or discrepancies. Any inaccuracies may cause delays or complications during the immigration process.

Once you have filled out the tourist card form, keep it with your passport in a safe place. You will need to present it to the immigration officer upon arrival in the Dominican Republic and upon departure from the country.

Now that you’ve successfully filled out the tourist card form, let’s move on to the next step: paying the tourist card fee.

Step 6: Pay the tourist card fee

After obtaining the tourist card and filling out the necessary form, the next step is to pay the tourist card fee. The fee for the tourist card depends on the type of card you have obtained.

If you purchased the tourist card online, you would have already paid the fee during the online application process. You can simply present your payment confirmation at the airport, and there will be no additional payment required.

However, if you are purchasing the tourist card at the airport, you will need to pay the fee directly at the designated counter. The fee for the standard Tourist Card is usually $10 USD, while the Tourist Card Plus costs $20 USD.

It’s important to note that payment for the tourist card at the airport is typically done in cash, and US dollars are widely accepted. It’s advisable to carry smaller denominations to facilitate the payment process.

Upon payment of the tourist card fee, you will receive a receipt or confirmation from the officer. Keep this receipt in a safe place along with your tourist card and passport, as you may be required to present it during your stay or upon departure.

Now that you’ve paid the tourist card fee, let’s move on to the final step: receiving your tourist card.

Step 7: Receive your tourist card

After completing the payment process, you will receive your tourist card, which grants you permission to stay in the Dominican Republic for the designated period.

If you purchased the tourist card online, you would have received a confirmation email with your tourist card attached. Make sure to print a copy of the tourist card or save it on your mobile device. You will need to present this document along with your passport at the immigration counter upon arrival in the Dominican Republic.

If you obtained the tourist card at the airport, the immigration officer will hand it to you after you have completed the necessary paperwork and paid the fee. Ensure that you keep your tourist card in a secure and easily accessible place, as you will be required to present it during your stay in the country.

The tourist card is an important document that serves as proof of your legal entry into the Dominican Republic. It should be kept safe throughout your stay and handed over to immigration authorities when departing from the country.

It’s important to remember that the tourist card is only valid for the specified duration stated on the card. If you wish to extend your stay beyond the allowed period, you will need to contact the Dominican Republic’s immigration authorities for further information and possibly obtain a visa extension.

Tourist card for Punta Cana in 2024

Punta Cana Airport (PUJ)

Punta Cana Airport (PUJ)

Do I need a tourist card to go to the Dominican Republic?

The short answer is – no, you do not need to buy a tourist card for Punta Cana because you will pay for this buying your tickets to the Dominican Republic. It saves your time to get to the hotel or apartment as soon as possible and start relaxing and enjoying your time in this beautiful paradise.

At first glance, it seems that you need a touristic card to have access to all of this beauty. Honestly, there is no need for it if you want to have a flight to this country. You used to need to buy it a few years ago when crossing the border of the DR. It was a tourist tax or tourist visa and you used to get a receipt of purchase that you handed to a migration officer.

Nevertheless, if you are planning to enter the Dominican Republic by land or sea, you need to purchase a Tourist Cards at the points of sale of the General Directorate of Internal Taxes at the ports of entry at a value of US $ 10.00.

How much is the tourist card in the Dominican Republic?

In the 2018 year, you had to pay $10.00 if you arrived to the country by plane. For now, you need to pay $10.00 only if you are entering the Dominican Republic by land or sea. Similarly, these points provide the facility to make the payment of the Tourist Card in euros to passengers who do not have US dollars. For these cases, the cost of the card is € 10.00.

Is there a tourist tax in the Dominican Republic?

All tourist taxes are included in your ticket or when you are getting a VISA you will pay these taxes. At the airport, you do not need to pay anything like that. If you travel by land or sea, you will pay $10.00 for a touristic card.

Remember, you do not need to pay any extra fees if you are staying less than 30 days, but it depends on which country you are from. Tourist cards permit varying lengths of stay – 30, 60, or 90 days. For longer stays, one can visit the Migration Department in Santo Domingo and request an extension or pay the same fee at the airport when leaving the country. The purchase of the tourist card at the airport upon arrival was cancelled to reduce the time in the queues, to guarantee a speedy customs and migration control procedure and let tourists spend just a few minutes at the airport.

It is officially considered that the cost of this type of tourist visa is included in the cost of your flight. Besides, if you are a resident or citizen of the Dominican Republic you can reimburse $10 fee from the Tax Service since you are living here not for a vacation. Please, follow this link to get a refund .

How do I get a tourist visa to the Dominican Republic?

You do not need a visa if you live in one of these eight countries: Argentine, Chile, Ecuador, Israel, Japan, Peru, South Korea, Uruguay. If you are not from any country I mentioned above, you need to have a visa for a stay longer than 30 days in the DR. The best time to apply for your Dominican Republic visa is 1-2 months before your travel date. It is very important to have an invitation letter from somebody you know there (parents, friends and so on) to get the visa.

Our advice: before buying tickets, contact the embassy to check country restrictions and if you need to add more documents to your package entering the Dominican Republic. Please, use these links for that:

  • The U.S. Department of State provides detailed Dominican Republic International Travel Information (you can find all passport requirements and travel advisories).
  • The Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism offers up-to-date information on travel to and within the country.

Personalized service in Punta Cana

The Dominican Republic is located in the same waters as Cuba and Puerto Rico and occupies two-thirds of the island that Haiti shares in the east. Across the green interior of the island, a mixture of caves, luxurious Victorian houses, and remnants of pirate traditions, in addition to 900 miles of coastline stretching around its outskirts. It is so exciting, isn’t it?

Before you board your flight to Santo Domingo, you will start to arouse the dreams of the Dominican Republic and you, as you imagine the crumbling cliff of Ciudad Colonial and the soft green spaces scattered around the world. Throughout the country, mountainous areas, coasts, coffee plantations, and fisheries, as well as a wonderful climate allow you to spend the best tourist holidays there.

When you look at the big map of the island, you will see so many provinces, islets and coastlines worth visiting and exploring. It will surprise you with so many wonders waiting for you on its beaches that give you privacy, happiness, and joy. Take a chance and book your vacation in the Dominican Republic!

E-Ticket Dominican Republic: The New Form for Traveling to Punta Cana (2023 FAQs included)

  • Last updated on: 2023-01-22

When you’re getting ready for vacation, your mental to-do list tends to be a mile long. How many pairs of socks do you need? Should you pack that extra bikini? We’re sorry to tell you that you’re about to have to add another thing before traveling to beautiful Punta Cana . As of April 1st, 2021, travelers must present an e-ticket to enter the Dominican Republic.

Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered, and this guide will tell you everything you need to know about the newest electronic migration form. Why not put a bottle of wine or a fun snack in the fridge to reward yourself with after you’ve completed the form?

What is the Dominican Republic Electronic Ticket?

The Dominican Republic Electronic e-Ticket (eTicket) is a digital form required for travelers to enter or leave the country. It combines digital versions of a Traveler’s Health Affidavit, Customs Declaration, and International Boarding/Disembarking Forms.

The eTicket is mandatory and failure to fill it out will result in being denied entry or exit from the Dominican Republic. The process of filling out the eTicket form is free and can be done on the official website of the Dominican Republic Ministry of Immigration, using a desktop or laptop and recommended browser of Chrome or Firefox.

It’s important to note that visa and entry requirements can change at any time, so travelers should check with their local embassy for any updates before leaving for the airport.

Why do you need an E-Ticket for the Dominican Republic?

This long-awaited move from paper to electronic tickets combines digital versions of:

  • Traveler’s Health Affidavit: this provides your contact details and confirms whether or not you have any coronavirus symptoms
  • Customs Declaration : this official government form lists details of all goods being imported or exported into or out of the Dominican Republic. This includes cash amounts, live animals, plants or food products, and many others.
  • International Boarding/Disembarking Forms: also known as arrival card, is used by immigration authorities to provide a record of who is entering the Dominican Republic .

This change has been made to make the passenger entry and exit procedures run more smoothly and continue to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

What Happens When you Don’t Get the Dominican Republic E-Ticket?

The eTicket is mandatory, and failure to fill the information out will mean you cannot enter or exit the Dominican Republic. Being denied entry is a frustrating and scary experience. We know you want a relaxing vacation, and there’s no need for bureaucracy to stand in your way of exploring the very best Punta Cana has to offer .

How to Fill Out the Dominican Republic E-Ticket Form

The process is free, and thanks to some changes in the forms, it has been made even more user-friendly.

Important Note: This was written in December 2021. We live in a world where visa requirements, e-ticket regulations, and entry restrictions can change at a moment’s notice. Please make sure to check your local embassy for any news and updates before leaving for the airport. We want you to have the easiest possible travel experience.

1. Access Choice Matters

Many people have reported that filling out the Dominican Republic e-ticket form on a smartphone can be an incredibly frustrating experience. The form works best with a desktop or laptop, and it is recommended you use Chrome or Firefox. Don’t forget to be plugged into the power, so you don’t suddenly lose your hard-earned progress.

2. Access the Portal En Inglés, por favor

You want to go onto the official website of the Dominican Republic Ministry of Immigration . The e-ticket is free, and there’s no need to use visa service agencies that pretend to be the real deal. Some websites are floating around that promise to be held accountable for any mistakes in exchange for money. Don’t fall for these tricks, and make sure any website you access ends in gob.do.

“Ahhhhh, everything is in Spanish!” Not to worry, while the Dominican Republic’s national language is Spanish, you can change it to English in the drop-down menu found in the upper right-hand corner.

3. How Many People Are Traveling with You?

Step one of the application asks you to confirm how many people you are traveling with. Don’t get caught out by answering how many are in your party in total.

Top Tip: if you’d prefer to have one immigration QR code per person, you can answer this question as if you are traveling independently. Just make sure every traveler fills out their own Dominican republic e-ticket form. This also avoids the system crashing on more than one person.

4. General Information Time

You should know everything in this section. The system will be asking for:

  • Your permanent address
  • The country you reside in
  • Your home city
  • Are you arriving or leaving the Dominican Republic?
  • Which state are you from?
  • What’s the zip code of your permanent address?
  • Do you have any layovers on the way?

See, simple stuff!

5. Migratory Information

This is all the good stuff you’re used to filling out on a bit of paper card on the plane. Including:

  • Your birth date and place of birth
  • Your gender
  • Your nationality
  • Your passport number
  • Your civil status
  • Your occupation
  • The address of the place you’re staying
  • Name of the airport you’re traveling from
  • Your flight number
  • The flight date
  • The airport you’re going to in the Dominican Republic
  • What airline or cruise ship you’re traveling with
  • The flight confirmation number
  • Why you’re traveling
  • How long you’re staying, in days

6. Customs Time

The usual questions regarding customs, answer to the best of your abilities. A handy extra box will open whenever you click yes to explain the details.

7. Health Questionaire

The Dominican Republic takes coronavirus seriously, and in this final section, you will ve asked:

  • Any countries you visited in the past 30 days
  • Whether you’ve had any symptoms listed in the past 72 hours
  • Your phone number to contact you via

8. Accept and Send

9. qr-code to download.

You made it. You’re done! Before you pour yourself a glass of well-earned wine, grab hold of that QR code, making traveling to the Dominican Republic incredibly easy. We can’t wait to welcome you to paradise.

At Punta Cana Adventures , we’re all about helping you explore everything this magnificent place has to offer outside of your resort . We’re here to help you with any frequently asked questions and bookings .

New for 2023: Simplifying the Exit Process with the Dominican Republic Departure Form

Traveling to the Dominican Republic just got a little bit easier with a new feature implemented in 2023. The e-ticket process now includes the option to fill out the Dominican Republic departure form, also known as the exit e-ticket, in the same process as the entry e-ticket. This means that travelers can complete both forms at the same time, making the exit process more streamlined and efficient.

When you have finished step 7 of the entry e-ticket process, you will be prompted with a pop-up asking if you would like to complete your exit ticket. If you choose to do so, you will be prompted to fill out some additional information such as your embarkation and disembarkation ports, flight number, flight date, airline name, and flight confirmation number. This information is needed to confirm your departure from the Dominican Republic.

It is important to note that in order to complete the departure form, you must have a valid return ticket already booked. It is highly recommended to complete the departure form at the same time as the entry e-ticket as it is the easiest and most efficient way to do so.

Once the departure form is completed, you will receive a QR code for both entry and exit to the Dominican Republic. This will make the immigration process upon arrival and departure more seamless, allowing you to enjoy your vacation without any unnecessary bureaucracy standing in your way.

It is also important to note that visa and entry requirements can change at any time, so travelers should check with their local embassy for any updates before leaving for the airport. By keeping informed and taking advantage of the new feature for the departure form, you can have a smoother travel experience to the Dominican Republic.

Buying a Sim Card for Dominican Republic in 2024

dominican republic tourist card 2023

Planning your holiday to the Dominican Republic? Don’t get stuck with high roaming charges on your trip. In this guide I will tell you everything you need to know how to get connected in the Dominican Republic.

Find out where to buy a local prepaid sim card, the best e-sim cards for Dominican Republic, up to date prices as per January 2024, the best 4G/5G network, my recommendation, a vlog about my experiences and arrival and more about buying an international for Dominican Republic on the internet.

Looking for the best ways to get connected is the first thing I do when I get to a new country. Often that means buying a local prepaid sim card or an e-sim card and as I am aiming to visit every country in the world you can already find more than 200 articles about sim cards on Traveltomtom: USA , New York , Newark , Miami , Jamaica ,  Canada , Toronto , Mexico , Mexico City , Colombia , Bogota , Panama City , Paraguay , London , Amsterdam , Paris , Brussels , Europe , Turkey , Istanbul and many more.

If you are flying to Santo Domingo then check out my guide for buying a sim card at Santo Domingo Airport .

So next time you are planning your adventure abroad come check out Traveltomtom for the latest prepaid and e-sim card advice for your holiday destination. Bookmark me!

Why buying a prepaid sim card for Dominican Republic

Using data roaming when traveling abroad is not recommended. First of all the roaming charges are outrageous (mostly like $10 USD a day) and data speed is limited. To avoid high roaming charges Traveltomtom recommends buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival or an e-sim card for Dominican Republic

Local prepaid sim cards are the cheapest way to get data on your phone when traveling to the Dominican Republic, e-sim cards are more convenient but also a little more expensive. Being connected simply makes life easier, think about ordering an Uber, getting directions from Google Maps, finding nearby restaurants, bars, gas stations, friends, etc. for all of that you need a working data connection on your phone.

Especially when visiting multiple tourist destinations in the Dominican Republic it is adviced to stay connected. It kills time during a long bus ride, gets you out of emergencies, helps with using translation apps, etc.

On my last trip to Dominican Republic I traveled around the country for 3 weeks. I visited Monte Cristi in the most Northwest corner to Isla Saona all the way in the Southeast. I rented a car for about 2 weeks to explore the best beaches in Dominican Republic.

See my Instagram account @traveltomtom for a lot of Dominican Republic travel inspiration.

Related: Unique Places to Stay in Dominican Republic | Chocolate Mountain .

Even though all the fancy resorts in Dominican Republic mostly have fast and good working WiFi I still recommend you to buy an e-sim or a local prepaid sim card. Keep in mind that public WiFi is through an UNSECURED network and your data is not protected. Using a VPN is recommended in these situations.

Also keep in mind that when walking out the beach you lose connection with the WiFi.

When going on day trips from the resorts you will be offline all day, with a local prepaid sim card or an e-sim card you will stay connected.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends a Claro prepaid sim card for the Dominican Republic. It will cost you around $6 USD for 8 GB data for 5 days and Claro has the best 4G/5G network in the Dominican Republic and the fastest mobile data speed in 2024.

Traveltomtom recommends using e-sim cards for traveling to the Dominican Republic as well, simply because they are so easy to get connected and you arrive prepared. However, it is no secret that local prepaid sim cards are cheaper.

A great alternative is an international sim card for traveling in Dominican Republic. There are a couple options, check out my article with a comparison of the best international sim cards for traveling in 2024  and find the one that suits your trip.

Best e-sim cards for Dominican Republic

Although a little more expensive, an e-sim card is definitely the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Dominican Republic in 2024. No more visiting a sim card store and swapping physical prepaid sim cards anymore.

Where to buy a sim card in Dominican Republic

Punta cana airport.

sim card punta cana airport

Being such a popular tourist destination in the Dominican Republic you would expect it would be easy to find sim card stores on arrival at Punta Cana Airport. I recently landed at PUJ Airport and looked for a place to buy a sim card for Dominican Republic but there is still no sim card store as of 2024.

When landing in Punta Cana then take an Uber for around $3 USD to the nearby Bluemall Punta Cana. It is just a 3 minute ride away from the airport and here you can find official retail stores of: Altice and Claro. See more about it my vlog about buying a sim card in Dominican Republic at the end of this article.

Santo Domingo Airport

Are you flying to Santo Domingo Airport then you are lucky as at Santo Domingo Airport you can find a Claro and an Altice store. Both operators sell prepaid sim cards for the Dominican Republic for tourists. The sim card shops at Santo Domingo Airport are open from 08.00 am to 08.00 pm.

Find out everything you need to know about buying a sim card at Santo Domingo Airport  in my complete guide.

In the historic city center of Santo Domingo you can also find an Altice, Claro and even a Viva store. Use Google Maps to locate the nearest sim card store in Santo Domingo city center in case you didn’t get a chance to buy a sim card at Santo Domingo Airport. At Santo Domingo Airport you can only buy physical prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards are NOT available for tourists.

Santiago de Los Caballeros Airport

Unfortunately also on Santiago the Los Caballeros Airport there are no phone shops that sell prepaid sim cards for tourists despite the fact that there are multiple daily flights from the USA arriving. When flying to Santiago de Los Caballeros Airport you will also have to find a Claro or Altice store in the city center.

At La Romana and Puerto Plata airport there are also no phone stores.

Traveltomtom normally recommends buying a sim card online for your trip abroad. However, for the Dominican Republic there are not that many international prepaid sim cards and e-sim cards available. There is an e-sim card for the Dominican Republic available for $9.5 USD for 1 GB data , which actually is a good option for your first day until you buy a prepaid sim card in a phone store in Dominican Republic.

Mobile internet providers in the Dominican Republic

The main mobile internet operators in the Dominican Republic are Claro and Altice. There is also a provider called Viva, but since they have a rather small 3G/4G mobile network it is not a recommended Dominican Republic prepaid sim card for tourists. Therefore in my comparison of the Dominican Republic sim cards Viva is not taken into consideration and we only focus on Claro and Altice.

Registration process

buying a sim card in dominican republic

When buying a sim card in Dominican Republic you will need to be there in person and bring your passport. A copy of your passport is taken in the store and your new Dominican Republic sim card will be registered on your name and passport number. On top of that a photo of your face holding the sim card will also be taken and therefore you need to be there in person.

When this sounds like something you want to avoid you might want to look into an international sim card or an e-sim card for Dominican Republic .

Prices Dominican Republic prepaid sim cards

In the Dominican Republic they use the DR Peso and as of January 2024: $1 USD = 57.5 DOP and 100 DOP = $1.74 USD. Prices below are in DOP.

claro dominican republic prepaid sim card plans 2023

A Claro prepaid sim card cost 150 DOP ($2.7 USD) for the registration. From my experience I can tell you it comes with a little bit of credit for making a couple phone calls. But for internet you will need to add one of the following data packages:

  • 3 GB data for 3 days = 95 DOP - $1.7 USD
  • 5 GB data for 3 days = 120 DOP - $2.2 USD
  • 5 GB data for 5 days = 145 DOP - $2.6 USD
  • 8 GB data for 5 days = 170 DOP - $3.1 USD

For more info about a prepaid sim card from Claro check the  Claro website . Claro stores in Dominican Republic only offer physical prepaid sim cards, there are no e-sim cards for tourists available.

altice dominican republic prepaid sim card plans 2023

An Altice prepaid sim card is free is you activate one of the above prepaid sim card plans:

  • Unlimited data for 1 day = 49 DOP - $0.9 USD
  • Unlimited data for 3 days = 99 DOP - $1.8 USD
  • Unlimited data for 5 days = 139 DOP - $2.5 USD

Altice also offers a tourist sim card for Dominican Republic which also includes calling minutes:

  • 15 GB data + unlimited calls/sms + 300 DOP extra credit = 550 DOP - $10 USD

For more info about a prepaid sim card from Altice check the  Altice website . Altice stores in Dominican Republic only offer physical prepaid sim cards, there are no e-sim cards for tourists available.

Best 4G/5G network in Dominican Republic in 2024

As prices for prepaid sim cards are more or less the same let’s also take into consideration the 4G/5G network coverage in the Dominican Republic . Lets compare the mobile internet providers 4G/5G network coverage maps and find out who has the best mobile data network in Dominican Republic in 2024.

Also as said in the beginning of the article there is another mobile internet provider in Dominican Republic called Viva, but it is not taken into consideration in this sim card comparison as their mobile data network is much weaker compared to Claro and Altice. Below you can find the proof.

Is there 5G in Dominican Republic?

is there 5g in dominican republic

Yes, there is 5G in Dominican Republic and it is offered by both Altice and Claro. The 5G network is still very limited to Santo Domingo and Punta Cana, but it works fine based on my own experience. Claro has the best 5G network in Dominican Republic as of 2024, see the coverage maps below.

Viva 4G/5G network coverage map

viva 4g 5g network coverage map dominican republic 2024

Altice 4G/5G network coverage map

altice 4g 5g network coverage map dominican republic 2024

Claro 4G/5G network coverage map

claro 4g 5g network coverage map dominican republic 2024

From the above network coverage maps for the Dominican Republic we can pretty clearly see that Viva has by far the smallest network and that Claro has the best 4G/5G mobile network in the Dominican Republic in 2024.

Best sim card for the Dominican Republic in 2024

best 4g 5g network dominican republic

As mentioned earlier, international and e-sim cards for Dominican Republic are pretty expensive and local prepaid sim cards have much better value for money.

Weirdly the data plans for prepaid sim cards in Dominican Republic are mostly valid for just 5 days. Not a big problem, but you will need to reactivate every 5 days a data plan. Luckily prepaid data plans in Dominican Republic are very cheap.

When comparing Altice and Claro for the best prepaid sim card in Dominican Republic we can see that there is not so that much difference in price. Altice is a little cheaper and gives you unlimited data, Claro offers more different prepaid sim card plans. All in all we are talking about $1 USD more or less, so not something that is going to hurt your wallet.

Traveltomtom recommends the sim card with the strongest mobile internet network. The 4G/5G network of Claro is much more advanced than the Altice network and therefore Claro is the best sim card for Dominican Republic in 2024 for tourists.

My experience buying a sim card in the Dominican Republic

best sim card for dominican republic

On arrival at Punta Cana Airport I definitely expected a sim card shop, but unfortunately. When asking around some guy said he knew someone that could fix me a local prepaid sim card. But this practice is a no-go for me.

Luckily the free public WiFi at Punta Cana Airport was working very good and I located the nearest phone shops just a 3 minute Uber ride away. A couple minutes later I was in the Bluemall Punta Cana to buy my sim card for the Dominican Republic. Check out my vlog below about my arrival and buying a sim card in the Dominican Republic.

The Altice and the Claro store are next to each other and I inquired at both stores for the prices for prepaid sim cards. However, I already knew that I was going to buy a Claro prepaid sim card for my trip to Dominican Republic. Why? The 4G/5G network strength!

Especially since I was going to stay my first days about 1 hour north of Punta Cana to an area that had little phone reception in general. I booked the Majestic Colonial Punta Cana hotel and before my arrival I inquired at the resort which phone signal was the strongest in the area. Their answer was clear: Claro!

Buying a prepaid sim card at the Claro store in the Bluemall took just a couple minutes and I walked out of the store with a working data connection on my phone. The sim card registration is pretty 'funny' as they need a photo of your face with your new Dominican Republic sim card in your hand.

Here is my vlog about buying a sim card for Dominican Republic with more about my travel experiences around the country and data speed.

I only had good experiences using my Claro prepaid sim card for traveling in the Dominican Republic. There were even times I enjoyed a 5G signal but that was only in Santo Domingo and around Punta Cana airport. I was very surprised about the data speed as in the Caribbean it is not always that good. To my surprise the data speed with my Claro prepaid sim card was on average over 50 Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload according to my speed test.

data speed claro sim card dominican republic

Claro also worked totally fine in Samana Peninsula, towards the Haiti border and even in Mano Juan on Isla Saona there was an excellent 4G signal. I couldn't believe my eyes when I ran a speed test in Mano Juan, a little remote fishing village on Isla Saona. See the above photo.

I hope all the above tips about getting connected and buying a sim card for the Dominican Republic were helpful for your upcoming trip. IF you have any more questions then please leave me a comment below and I will try to help you out!

16 Things Every Traveler Should Know Before Visiting the Dominican Republic

author image

See recent posts by Toby Orton

Beautiful beaches , amenity-packed resorts, awe-inspiring nature, incredible golf, and a vibrant culture -- these are some of the things that make the Dominican Republic one of the most-visited destinations in the Caribbean . Lured by the delights of Punta Cana and beyond, over six million people choose to vacation here each year. However, despite the paradisiacal elements, the island isn’t perfect. In fact, it made the news this year for an unusual spate of tourist deaths. With that in mind, it pays to be prepared before you visit. To help you arrive informed, here are 16 things every traveler should know before visiting the Dominican Republic .

Beach at Paradisus Punta Cana Resort

1. Safety in the Dominican Republic is generally okay.

While the Dominican Republic has had its fair share of negative press, the country is generally safe, especially if visitors stick to tourist areas and follow the usual common sense when it comes to traveling. The spate of tourist deaths in 2019 made headlines, but the majority of people visit without experiencing any issues. The U.S. State Department ranks the Caribbean destination with a Level 2 warning (the same as France and Germany), meaning visitors should exercise increased caution. Muggings and pickpocketing are the most common complaints, so tourists should be sensible and careful not to find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.

2. Dominican Republic tourists should watch out for scams.

As with many other tourist destinations, the Dominican Republic has its issues with scams and hustles. From fake beggars and police to unlicensed taxis, there’s a wide variety of potential scams to avoid on the island. Also, be mindful of people trying to pick up parking charges at the beaches (parking is free).

3. Spanish is the local language in the Dominican Republic.

Spanish is the national language in the Dominican Republic, so learn a few key phrases before you arrive. English is widely spoken at the resorts, but if you choose to explore further afield, you’ll likely need to know a little Spanish to get by. Plus, you’ll feel much more comfortable engaging with people, if you can converse in their local language.

4. Visitors no longer have to pay a tourist fee upon arrival.

Beach at the Hotel Bellevue Dominican Bay

Beach at the Hotel Bellevue Dominican Bay/Oyster

Previously, many visitors to the Dominican Republic were required to pay a tourist fee upon arrival. The U.S. $10 fee has now been added onto the cost of flights, which means smoother arrivals. Yes, you still have to pay, but at least you don’t have to line up to do it.

5. The local currency in the Dominican Republic is the Dominican peso.

The Dominican peso is the local currency on the island, so exchange U.S. dollars when you arrive. You can use U.S. dollars, but in many places, you’ll likely be paying a higher price for products and services. If you plan on staying at your resort the whole time — particularly if you’re on an all-inclusive vacation — then U.S. dollars will work just fine, but you might want some local currency when venturing off the property.

6. Dominican Republic excursions should be planned carefully.

Keep in mind that many major attractions aren’t close to the main resort areas. For example, if you’re staying in Punta Cana, finding the local culture or mythical waterfalls might take a little planning. That’s not to say you shouldn’t branch out and experience what’s on offer beyond your all-inclusive resort — just don’t expect a quick 10-minute cab ride up to Monkeyland.

7. Book airport transportation to your Dominican Republic hotel in advance.

Beach Near La Romana in the Dominican Republic/Oyster

Finding your own transportation from the airport can be stressful, especially with issues like unlicensed taxis. Avoid that stress and book a car in advance. You’re likely to save on time and money, plus gain some peace of mind, with a little forward thinking.

8. Baseball is the national sport in the Dominican Republic.

Baseball is the biggest sport in the Dominican Republic, with the country providing the second-highest number of players in Major League Baseball after the U.S. If you visit in the winter (October through January) and fancy an excursion away from the beach, check out a Dominican Professional Baseball League game. Catching a game is a great way to soak up the culture and mix with local fans.

9. Be aware of sex tourism in the Dominican Republic.

Depending on where you are on the island, you might see some aspects of sex tourism . Due to the high poverty rates, prostitution has a visible presence throughout the D.R., particularly in Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata. It’s important to be aware of the issues around trafficking and prostitution, in order to gain insight into the island beyond its dreamy Caribbean image.

10. Using Uber in the Dominican Republic is a great way to avoid inflated prices.

Uber operates in Santo Domingo, Santiago, and Puerto Plata, so if you’re worried about being ripped off in a taxi, this is a great option.

11. There is such a thing as island time.

Island time is alive and well in the Dominican Republic. That means things run at their own pace, unhurried by tourists who arrive with strict routines. Expect everything from restaurant reservations to pre-booked taxis to operate with a delay — 15 to 30 minutes late is hardly considered off schedule. Just go with it — you’re on vacation, after all.

12. Locals in the Dominican Republic are welcoming.

Beach at the Majestic Colonial Punta Cana

Beach at the Majestic Colonial Punta Cana/Oyster

While it’s often stories about pickpocketing that make the news, locals in the Dominican Republic are warm and friendly. In fact, their hospitality and generosity are part of what makes the island so great.

13. You can’t drink the tap water in the Dominican Republic.

Bottled water is available everywhere, so don’t even think about drinking the tap water in the D.R. Some hotels provide filtered H2O, but play it safe and stick to the branded bottled water to avoid any unpleasant illnesses.

14. You’ll have to pack more than beachwear.

If you plan on taking in the nightlife in the Dominican Republic, make sure to pack more than your standard beachwear. Dominicans take clubbing seriously, and turning up in your beach attire will make you feel slightly underdressed in many bars and clubs. You don’t have to bring anything fancy, but at the very least, leave your flip-flops at the hotel.

15. A mobile hotspot device can come in handy.

Wi-Fi is generally good in the resorts, but can be patchy in some parts of the island. That being said, you might want to get a mobile hotspot device to stay connected, especially if you plan on traveling off the property.

16. The beaches in the Dominican Republic are incredible.

If you’re visiting the Dominican Republic, chances are you want to spend some time on the beach. Luckily, the Caribbean country is home to some of the most beautiful stretches of sand in the world . From popular Bavaro Beach to Playa Rincon, which has a more undeveloped feel, there are plenty of options to choose from.

Based on the ever-changing nature of the COVID-19 virus, we recommend connecting with your airline or travel agent directly to discuss any protocols that may apply to your country. As needed, we also recommend visiting the  International Air Transport Association (IATA)  for any updates to international markets and their required procedures. IATA cannot guarantee its accuracy and can accept no liability for any errors or omissions.

All foreign and Dominican passengers entering or departing the Dominican Republic on commercial flights must complete the free electronic entry and exit form at:

https://eticket.migracion.gob.do

It is no longer required to fill it out 72 hours prior to the trip . It can be filled out as soon as you have your flight information, even months in advance. However, it must be filled out before arriving at the airline counter at the airport, as it is required to present it to the airline. To avoid delays at the airport, it is advised to complete the form before the trip.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE E-TICKET

If your specific home city is not shown in the form, you can choose the nearest large city in your state or province. If you are staying at a vacation rental, please ask the host to provide the complete address, including province, municipality and sector.

If you are  traveling as a family , you must fill out the form with the data of all the family members who will be traveling, however, it is only necessary that a single user be created in the system and that this user fill in the data of all the members of the family that belong to that trip, up to 6 members additional to the one filling out the form (7 persons in total per form). It is not necessary for each traveler in the same family to fill out an individual form. If more than 7 people are traveling, you must fill out an additional form for the rest. Children do not fill out the Customs section, only adults. A single QR code will be generated for the family.

You can print or make a screenshot of the arrival and departure confirmation QR codes. If you need to make any changes to the E-TICKET, you can consult it with the application code that was issued when you started filling out the form and make changes.

Passengers arriving on private flights, non-commercial vessels, ferries, cruise ships, etc., do not need to fill out the E-TICKET. The physical Customs Declaration and International Embarkation/Disembarkation forms will be accepted for the aforementioned passengers.

Current Measures by the Government of the Dominican Republic

As of February 16, 2022, all restrictive measures imposed by COVID-19 are suspended, and it will be up to each individual to take his or her own measures to safeguard his or her health, responsibly, but without restrictions.

Measures such as the use of face masks, presentation of vaccination cards for access to places of public use or restrictions in public spaces are the responsibility of each individual.

As a result of our stringent safety measures and effective vaccination plan, currently, hotel occupancy has increased to 100%, further solidifying Dominican Republic as a world example of tourism recovery amidst the pandemic.

100% of the Tourism sector personnel (hotels, airports, restaurants, transportation, etc.) have been vaccinated with two doses, and are in the process of being vaccinated with a third dose of the vaccine against COVID-19. With this vaccination program we will continue to strengthen the safety and health of all those who work in the sector in order to also guarantee the safety and health of all tourists who visit us. The hotels, restaurants and partners will continue to work hand in hand with the authorities.

Dominican Republic has a robust health care system that has been able to quickly detect cases of COVID-19 in the country. For more information about the coronavirus in Dominican Republic, please visit the Ministry of Public Health’s website. ( https://www.msp.gob.do/web/ ) or download the COVID-RD mobile phone application, available on the App Store and Google Play, that works as a passport in which, through a QR code, visitors can report their condition and access many services and information.

For MITUR, the well-being and safety of visitors remains a priority, so it will continue to work in coordination with the other relevant authorities to further strengthen the country’s preventive measures against coronavirus.

World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recognition

On May 9, 2022, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recognized the Dominican Republic as the number one country in the world in tourism recovery. The Dominican tourism model stands out for achieving the most successful recovery in the industry, reaching record numbers in tourist arrivals.

The success of the recovery is attributed to the Dominican Government and the pillars of innovation, entrepreneurship, education, and new destinations, which are the basis for the cooperative effort between the public and private sectors, which jointly ensure the guarantees and health protocols to guarantee safe tourism.

Click  HERE  for more information.

On January 18, 2022, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recognized the Dominican Republic for its successful recovery in the tourism industry and its efficient management of sanitary protocols in the country’s different tourist destinations.

The UNWTO highlighted the management and sanitary protocols applied in the Dominican Republic to guarantee safe tourism, thus achieving the most successful recovery of the industry in the entire region, reaching record figures in tourist arrivals.

The success of the recovery is due to the joint effort of the public and private sectors, who continue to work hand in hand with the Association of Hotels and Tourism (ASONAHORES).

The Dominican Republic is the only destination in the region where 100% of the employees in the tourism sector are fully vaccinated with two doses, and which has the lowest incidence rate of contagion in the tourist poles, making the country a safe destination for travel.

How can I reduce my chances of contracting COVID-19?

General measures to protect against respiratory diseases include:

  • Frequently clean your hands (wash them with soap and water or alcohol solutions), especially after direct contact with sick people or their environment.
  • Avoid contact with people with signs of a respiratory illness, such as coughing or sneezing.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with disposable tissues when you cough or sneeze, and then wash your hands.

These measures also help protect you against frequent illnesses like the flu.

What should I do if I suspect I have COVID-19?

If you suspect that you have symptoms of COVID-19, the United States Center for Disease Control advises you to take the following steps:

  • Stay in your home or hotel room and call the doctor before going for a medical visit.
  • Avoid contact with other people and animals.
  • Wear a mask.
  • Cover your mouth or nose with a disposable tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wash your hands regularly and for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid sharing personal items with others.
  • Clean all high-contact surfaces every day.
  • Monitor your symptoms.

What are the symptoms of the coronavirus?

The most common symptoms are fever, cough, and feeling short of breath. In some cases, there may also be digestive symptoms like diarrhea and abdominal pain. Symptoms can be aggravated in vulnerable individuals such as the elderly or people with compromised immune systems, among others.

Where can I get information about the coronavirus?

Information on COVID-19 can be found on the websites of different official organizations. Our recommendations are as follows:

How to get a Dominican Republic tourist card - requirements and fees

IMPORTANT NOTE: CURRENTLY WE DO NOT OFFER THIS VISA. STAY TUNED, BECAUSE IT WILL BE AVAILABLE SOON.

Fill me in

When you travel to the Dominican Republic, one of the first things you need to do is acquire a tourist card . That is if you want to go there as a tourist. If you go for business purposes, you still need to make a trip to the Dominican Republic embassy. Nonetheless, a tourist card can be purchased online, and this article will tell you everything about it.

What do you need?

To be honest, you do not need much. It is not like you are applying for a visa when multiple documents are required. Instead, a tourist card is a lot easier to obtain, and all you need is a passport and a means of payment. The passport has to be valid, and the means of payment can be a credit/debit card or even a Paypal account.

The application

Once you have your passport and the means of payment, you can move forward to the application itself. All you have to do is write in some general information about yourself, choose the processing time, and provide an email address. The whole process should last just a few minutes. After you are done, you submit the application and wait for the tourist card.

The processing time depends on which one you choose. You have three options: standard, rush, and super rush processing . The first one costs 30$ (or the equivalent in your country’s currency,) and you receive the card in one business day. Rush processing lasts just two hours, but it will add 20$ to your bill, and the Super Rush Processing costs an additional 40$, but you can apply and have your tourist card on your way to the airport. It lasts only 15 minutes.

What you should know

There are a few rules that you should be aware of when it comes to the Dominican Republic tourist card. It is very different from a visa, which is why you should make a difference. The tourist card is valid for 30 days from your departure date, but you can extend your stay once you are within the Dominican Republic borders . Just ask at the border where you can do that. Also, once you have the tourist card, you do not have to leave right away. You have a year to use it until it loses its validity.

Unlike a visa, which can include your child, a tourist visa is strictly nominal. If you have two kids, for example, you have to pay a tourist card for each of them. Also, you can use it only once, for a single entry. Last but not least, if you go to the Dominican Republic for business purposes, you cannot use a tourist card. You have to go to the embassy for that.

The fact that you can buy online a Dominican Republic tourist card is a beneficial thing. You are no longer required to waste time at the embassy to get your documents. At the same time, the online process is effortless, fast, and it does not cost very much. Surely you find this better than staying in line at the consulate.

Dominican Republic’s tourism flourishes with over 9 million visitors in 2023

dominican republic tourist card 2023

Santo Domingo.- Tourism Minister David Collado proudly announced the Dominican Republic’s remarkable tourism performance, with a record-breaking 9,105,043 visitors from January to November 2023. This figure signifies a 22% growth compared to the previous year, a staggering 103% increase from 2021, and a 34% rise over 2019.

During his monthly press conference, Minister Collado shared that in November alone, the country welcomed 636,460 air passengers, including 542,229 foreign tourists and 94,231 Dominicans living abroad. These arrivals by air represent a 38% increase from 2019, 22% more than 2021, and 11% higher than last year.

Cruise tourism also showed consistent expansion, with 223,393 cruise passengers arriving in November, contributing to a total of 1,913,991 cruise visitors in the first eleven months of the year. This surge in both air and sea travel led to a historical high for the Dominican tourism sector.

Collado expressed confidence that these impressive figures indicate the country is on track to reach its ambitious target of welcoming ten million visitors by the year’s end. The main sources of tourism in November were the United States (42%), Canada (19%), Colombia (5%), and Germany and Argentina (3% each).

Punta Cana Airport emerged as the top destination, receiving 58% of tourists, followed by Las Américas (26%), Cibao (10%), Puerto Plata (5%), and Romana, Samana, and Isabela (1% each). This tourism boom reflects the Dominican Republic’s growing status as a leading global travel destination.

How much is that helping Dominican society. The only ones getting rich are foreign companies and crooked politicians. All this money and the Dominican republic is still a third world country.

bla bla bla, dude the DR goverment gets tax revenue and that is being invested int infrastructure, new subway in santo domingo and santiago, new developemnt in cabo rojo, new cruise ports, the border wall ect.

Dominican Republic Tourist Card: Your Gateway to Paradise

Hello, touristversal! Welcome to the enchanting world of the Dominican Republic and the essential travel document known as the Dominican Republic Tourist Card.

If you’re planning a trip to this tropical paradise in the Caribbean, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with the Dominican Republic Tourist Card, also known as the “Tarjeta de Turista.” In this article, we’ll explore everything you need to know about this important document, from its purpose and application process to its benefits and tips for a smooth travel experience. So, let’s dive in and discover how this card can be your gateway to an unforgettable vacation!

What is the Dominican Republic Tourist Card?

The Dominican Republic Tourist Card is a mandatory travel document required for most travelers visiting the Dominican Republic for tourism purposes. It serves as an entry permit and is valid for a specific duration of stay, typically up to 30 days. The card is electronically linked to your passport and allows you to explore the breathtaking beaches, vibrant culture, and rich history of this Caribbean gem.

How to Obtain the Dominican Republic Tourist Card?

Obtaining the Dominican Republic Tourist Card is a straightforward process. Here are the common methods:

1. Online Application:

The most convenient way to obtain the Tourist Card is by applying online. The official website of the Dominican Republic’s immigration authority provides an online application form. Simply fill in the required details, including your personal information, travel dates, and passport details. Upon completion, pay the processing fee, and you will receive the Tourist Card electronically, which can be printed or saved on your mobile device.

2. Onboard Flights and Cruise Ships:

For travelers arriving by air or sea, it’s common for the Tourist Card to be included in the ticket price or provided onboard the flight or cruise ship. In such cases, the crew will distribute the cards during the journey, and you can complete the necessary information before reaching the immigration checkpoint in the Dominican Republic.

3. Dominican Republic Consulates and Embassies:

If you prefer to obtain the Tourist Card before your trip, you can visit a Dominican Republic consulate or embassy in your home country. Check their website or contact them directly to inquire about the application process and required documents.

Benefits of the Dominican Republic Tourist Card

The Dominican Republic Tourist Card offers several benefits to travelers:

1. Streamlined Entry Process:

Having the Tourist Card allows for a smooth entry process upon arrival in the Dominican Republic. It eliminates the need for lengthy visa applications and provides a hassle-free experience, enabling you to start your vacation without delay.

2. Flexibility:

The Tourist Card allows you to explore various regions of the Dominican Republic, from the stunning beaches of Punta Cana and the historic streets of Santo Domingo to the lush landscapes of Puerto Plata. You can move freely within the country during the validity period of your card.

3. Cost-effective:

The Tourist Card is a cost-effective option compared to a traditional visa. The processing fee is typically lower, making it an affordable choice for travelers seeking to enjoy all that the Dominican Republic has to offer.

Tips for a Smooth Travel Experience

To ensure a seamless travel experience with your Dominican Republic Tourist Card, consider the following tips:

1. Check Expiry Date:

Before traveling, verify the validity of your Tourist Card to ensure it covers your entire stay in the Dominican Republic. If necessary, you can apply for an extension through the local immigration authorities.

2. Keep Multiple Copies:

Make multiple copies of your Tourist Card and keep them in separate locations, such as your luggage, wallet, and digital storage. This precaution will come in handy in case of loss or theft.

3. Respect Local Laws and Customs:

While exploring the Dominican Republic, respect the local laws, customs, and traditions. Familiarize yourself with the dos and don’ts to ensure a pleasant and respectful experience for both you and the local communities.

In Conclusion

The Dominican Republic Tourist Card is your key to an unforgettable adventure in this Caribbean paradise. Whether you’re lounging on the pristine beaches, indulging in delicious cuisine, or immersing yourself in the vibrant culture, this essential travel document ensures a seamless entry process and the freedom to explore the wonders of the Dominican Republic. So, pack your bags, prepare your Tourist Card, and get ready for an incredible journey. Until next time, farewell, and see you soon in another exciting article!

Dominican Republic Covid Travel 2023

The Dominican Republic has largely lifted all significant travel restrictions.

As of April 23, 2022, International passengers and crew members do not need to present a COVID-19 Vaccination Card, PCR, or antigen test to enter the Dominican Republic or to receive services such as excursions and restaurants. Random COVID-19 testing for passengers upon arrival in the DR will no longer be performed. However, when required, random testing operations may be performed. Passengers who present their Vaccination Card will be exempted from random testing.

E-Ticket Requirement:

All foreign and Dominican passengers entering or leaving the Dominican Republic on commercial flights must complete an e-ticket. This electronic form combines the Traveler’s Health Affidavit, Customs Declaration and International Embarkation/Disembarkation forms. The form can be accessed through the following link:

https://eticket.migracion.gob.do

Visas are not required for visits shorter than 30 days. All visitors will be charged a $10 tourist card fee at each airport and incorporated into airline charges. A passport and an onward/return ticket are needed for entry into the country and may be obtained beforehand at the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City or an approved Dominican Consulate.

As of February 16, 2022, all restrictive measures imposed by COVID-19 are suspended, and it will be up to each individual to take his or her own actions to safeguard his or her health, responsibly. The Commonwealth of the Dominican Republic has taken the necessary steps to protect its visitors in the most secure way possible. For example, hotel occupancy has increased to 100% per cent and public spaces such as airports and stadiums have been reopened for people wishing to travel again under normal circumstances. Moreover, people with a valid vaccination card who wish to use public transportation vehicles should not worry about restrictions imposed for their protection; rather these measures are being implemented as part of a strategy that encourages proper precautionary action in order not to hinder professionals' efforts in getting the disease under control.

Best all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic

Cameron Sperance

The Dominican Republic's all-inclusive resort scene might seem like the hub of spring break activity, and it certainly is — but that's only scratching the surface.

Decadent, luxury resorts have boosted this serene country's hospitality scene in recent years. Of course, there are still plenty of options we love for families or friends just looking for some warm weather and fun.

Whether you're looking to stick to your favorite loyalty program or chasing after more of a bespoke resort, the Dominican Republic has something for you.

What are the most popular resort destinations in the Dominican Republic?

Across the Dominican Republic, there are pockets full of resorts that people love to visit. The majority of resorts are centered around the larger Punta Cana area, with popular destinations being Cap Cana, a gated community with pristine beaches and great resorts; Bavaro Beach, where you'll find dozens of resorts and a lot of beach activities; and Macao, where there are fewer crowds and ample space. South of Punta Cana, La Romana has fewer resorts but ones that pack a powerful punch.

While many all-inclusive resorts lean into cheesy tropical decor and feel a bit antiquated, Dreams Flora is fresh and modern, having received a total overhaul from its previous life before it was converted into a Hyatt in 2023.

Now, the family-friendly resort offers all-suite accommodations that include a balcony or terrace, huge TVs that offer streaming capabilities, steamers to refresh your clothes before dinner, and a laid-back vibe that feels comfortable and current. Book a club-level room and get even better amenities, preferred room locations, a butler who can assist in making dinner reservations and access to some exclusive pools (including an adults-only one).

Across the resort, guests can enjoy a beautiful stretch of beach, multiple pools with swim-up bars and even a fun water park with different slides and a splash pad for kids. There are also many family-friendly entertainment options, like live shows and dance parties, and even an adults-only sports bar that turns into a nightclub.

For food, enjoy the usual buffet and beachside grills, or make a reservation for Asian fusion or French food in design-forward restaurants.

Rates at Dreams Flora start at $320 or 17,000 Hyatt points per night.

Royalton Punta Cana offers travelers the best of both worlds: a family-friendly resort with plenty to enjoy, as well as an adults-only resort-within-a resort, The Hideaway , that offers a few secluded places for grown-ups to relax.

At the property, there are beautiful, palm tree-lined pools that'll make you question if you're in the DR or Hawaii, plus a beautiful beach where you can sit back and watch the day pass by or jump onto a boat for a wild inner tube ride or parasailing excursion.

The rooms are large and comfortable, with Diamond Club-level options giving guests access to a lounge and a concierge who can help make dinner reservations at restaurants that range from an energetic teppanyaki experience to a romantic steakhouse.

At The Hideaway, splurge for a swim-up suite, and you can enjoy your own pool right outside your terrace or hop over to the adults-only pool to relax and mingle.

And if you need a little more action, guests at Royalton Punta Cana have access to a water park at the neighboring Royalton resort that's just a quick walk or shuttle ride away.

Rates at Royalton Punta Cana start at $306 or 55,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Ultimate fun in the sun comes to guests at this adults-only all-inclusive resort on Juanillo Beach. Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana wows with its amenities, suites and a wide array of dining options.

The resort's 375 suites offer a mix of ocean views and swim-up access for those willing to splurge. Larger suites feature extras like spacious balconies, living rooms and even private hot tubs. Twenty-four-hour room service and well-stocked minibars that include a mix of beer and sodas will keep you nourished when you don't feel like eating out.

Of course, do make time for Hyatt Zilara's six restaurants and seven bars — the train seating at Journeys, the resort's Indian restaurant, is as picture-perfect as the curry served. A martini nightcap at One Eyed Cat, the on-site martini bar, is the best way to end the day and channel your inner 007. Don't worry: They won't judge you if you prefer it stirred over shaken.

Activities like visits to the on-site Canapolis Water Park, live music performances at the resort amphitheater or fitness classes ranging from yoga to aqua cycling are all included in your stay. Though, you might consider paying for extras like a couples massage on the beach or a private moonlit dinner — Hyatt Zilara's romance concierge is happy to do all the planning.

Rates from $597 or 35,000 World of Hyatt points per night, based on double occupancy.

dominican republic tourist card 2023

This Marriott Autograph Collection all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic errs more on the vibe side of a trendy boutique hotel than a packed all-inclusive resort with college students — though, it does still enjoy revelry from its more mature guests.

Royalton Chic Punta Cana is popular with couples and honeymooners thanks to its enhanced amenities like excursions to neighboring areas and catamaran tours, an all-day buffet with Caribbean fare like mofongo and even an on-site casino. Those who splurge on a Diamond Club package get added amenities like butler service, a dedicated beach area with bar service and complimentary early check-in and late checkout.

The resort's rooms and suites notably lean into Royalton Chic Punta Cana's nightlife aesthetic with purple underlit beds, but these spaces are still a cozy place to return to after a day in the sun. Larger presidential suites feature extras like swim-out pools and additional bedrooms.

Rates start at $289 or 61,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night, based on double occupancy.

Those looking for a more intimate, glammed-up all-inclusive experience should look no further than Zoetry Agua Punta Cana . The 96-suite resort wows with the details like a welcome bottle of rum or tequila upon arrival, thrice- daily housekeeping, a complimentary 20-minute wellness experience and horseback riding — oh, and no set check-in or checkout time.

Suites and villas similarly amaze guests with cathedral ceilings, teak furniture and private balconies or terraces overlooking the gardens, pool or ocean. The 3-Bedroom Villa Caney Garden View is the ultimate indulgence in terms of upgrades, as this 4,100-square-foot space includes a sprawling living room, four bathrooms, walk-in closets, a plunge pool and a gazebo for outdoor dining.

Activities abound, from exploring a coral reef just offshore to lounging by the infinity pools or taking part in a wine-tasting or cigar-rolling class. But save room for time indulging at Zoetry's many restaurants — Mexican chilaquiles and Argentinian steak at the beachside Indigo restaurant are a TPG favorite.

Rates start at $527 or 35,000 World of Hyatt points per night, based on double occupancy.

dominican republic tourist card 2023

There's a wide range of activities to keep travelers of all ages busy and engaged at this family-friendly Punta Cana all-inclusive resort: a kids' club, a water park, two lagoon-style swimming pools, catamaran excursions, Jeep tours and horseback riding just to name a few.

The all-suite property features private balconies or terraces in all accommodations as well as seating areas to stretch out and relax after a day perusing the resort. Consider upgrading to a two-bedroom suite if traveling with family — or just opt for one of Bahia's connection junior suites.

You'll find a wide-ranging mix of international cuisine at poolside and beachside restaurants to keep you well-fed and hydrated between dips amid the crashing waves (or just the splashes of your neighbor in the pool).

Rates start at $288 per night, based on double occupancy.

dominican republic tourist card 2023

There's something for everyone at Hilton La Romana Resort & Spa, Punta Cana — plus the ability to earn and redeem Hilton Honors points. The sprawling property includes 356 guest rooms and suites, many of which include private balconies and views of Bayahibe Beach and the ocean.

Rooms and suites all feature a private outdoor space as well as a complimentary minibar that's restocked daily. You can pay up for added perks like swim-out rooms or ocean-view suites. Premium rooms include added benefits like a VIP pool, private beach and early check-in.

Dining ranges from Italian at Azzurri to flip flops and fabulous at the Coral Reef beach bar. Be sure to fuel up, as you'll need the energy for some of Hilton La Romana's activities like windsurfing, snorkeling, catamaran sailing and dance lessons to name a few. Of course, you can also try your hand at lady luck at the resort's on-site casino — you might just win enough to book your next all-inclusive getaway.

Rates start at $385 or 88,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

dominican republic tourist card 2023

Marriott's first all-inclusive resort to fall under The Luxury Collection branding is a luxe affair for those who want a chic spin on an all-inclusive getaway. The decadent resort sits on a cliff with stunning views of the ocean.

Swanky accommodations range from ocean-view junior suites to a two-bedroom Castle Island suite with a private pool, oceanfront deck and ample living area for lounging with a book or glass of wine.

Related: What it's like staying at the all-inclusive Sanctuary Cap Cana resort

You'll need a longer trip to make a dent in Sanctuary Cap Cana's endless dining options: The resort boasts 13 different restaurants and bars for guests to pick from. (We're partial to the teppanyaki at Wok, where you'll get your own private chef for the night in this moat-surrounding restaurant.)

Plus, you'll stay busy from check-in to checkout with activities like trying your hardest for a hole-in-one on the Jack Nicklaus golf course, singing the night away at the Love Bar piano bar or just splashing in the sun at one of Sanctuary Cap Cana's six pools.

Rates for Sanctuary Cap Cana start from $456 or 120,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night, based on double occupancy.

Old Hollywood is the vibe at Casa de Campo, a historic resort that has drawn celebrities to the Dominican Republic for decades. Even Frank Sinatra flew his private jet onto the landing strip of this storied resort that features a mix of rooms, suites and private villas.

Casa de Campo isn't as high society today as it was in its beginnings, but it's still a decadent way to enjoy the Dominican Republic's quieter southern coast. While we respect and love you for your affinity for cardio, you'll likely need to utilize the resort's golf carts to see the entirety of this 7,000-acre property. Accommodations range from guest rooms to private villas. We're particularly fond of the oceanfront villas, which include breakfast prepared in your villa along with dedicated butler service to help pack and unpack.

All-inclusive packages at Casa de Campo include unlimited horseback riding, tennis and non-motorized water sports. You can also take part in skeet or trap shooting and a kids club. Dining includes the more casual Chilango Taqueria and romantic, French-inspired La Caña (bouillabaisse tastes all the more fresh with the Caribbean Sea so near).

All-inclusive rates start at $325 per night, based on double occupancy.

dominican republic tourist card 2023

Amenities abound at this 750-suite all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana. Breathless, Hyatt's popular adults-only luxury all-inclusive imprint, wows at its Dominican Republic location with a variety of restaurants, entertainment and activities.

Accommodations include private balconies or terraces with large whirlpools. Those who splurge for an Xhale Club-level suite have access to more personalized butler service and access to VIP areas on the property.

Guests have 10 restaurants to choose from, including gourmet French cuisine at Coquette or Mediterranean at Kibbeh. Of course, we're fans of making friends amid the splashy revelry of Deep, Breathless Punta Cana's swim-up bar.

Major fun is to be had when you check into Breathless. Blacklight pool parties and Gatsby parties are just some of the variety of celebrations to be had during a stay. There are four pools — including two reserved for Xhale Club guests — and a variety of activities, from windsurfing to horseback riding. Don't forget to save time to pamper yourself at the Spa by Pevonia, which offers treatments like chocolate mint exfoliation and aromatherapy massage at an extra fee.

Rates start at $460 or 17,000 World of Hyatt points per night, based on double occupancy.

dominican republic tourist card 2023

Wyndham's fairly recent push into all-inclusive resorts offers an affordable way to enjoy some fun along the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic. Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach includes four pools, six restaurants and plenty of activities for guests of all ages.

Guest room and suite options range from spacious garden-view rooms with private balconies all the way up to ocean-view bungalows with thatched roofs and a private terrace.

Dining options at the property include Viva Mexico, a vibrant spot for alfresco guacamole and tacos, while La Roca Grill is a higher-end option for grilled fish amid romantic beachfront views. La Terraza is an all-day buffet offering everything from omelets in the morning to Italian at dinner. Between meals, hang out at the pool, swing from the seaside trapeze or indulge in a deep-tissue massage next door at the Viva Dominicus Beach's sister property, Viva Dominicus Palace.

Rates start at $271 or 30,000 Wyndham Rewards points per night.

dominican republic tourist card 2023

Families looking for an affordable all-inclusive getaway to Punta Cana should look no further than Iberostar Selection Bavaro Suites. The IHG-affiliated all-inclusive resort is located on a picturesque stretch of Playa Bavaro's beachfront and offers a wide array of family fun, spacious accommodations and delicious dining.

The town center-style layout of the resort sets the stage for an abundance of amenities, like Iberostar's three-story fitness center, 12 restaurants (we're partial to sushi at Kabuki Japanese Restaurant and the New York strip at Brave Steakhouse), a kids camp and golf course. Scuba diving and exploring the resort's coral nursery is a one-of-a-kind Iberostar experience for those looking to do more than "just" enjoy the crashing waves.

Space abounds in the guest suites (all of which include private balconies or terraces), but we're particularly keen on the junior suites closer to the pool or with oceanfront views. Families should consider larger two-bedroom suites while couples might want to indulge in the ultimate wow factor: the penthouse suite with a king-size bed and oceanfront view (complete with a welcome massage to really help unwind from real life to vacation life).

Or, for an upgraded experience at the resort, consider booking the Coral Level at Iberostar Selection Bavaro .

Rates start at $372 per night.
