You are picked up from your accommodation at 9:00am. Your first experience is a drive through two of Hobart’s southern suburbs, that are located immediately south of the central business district – Sandy Bay and Battery Point.

Sandy Bay  is bounded on the east by the Derwent River and has several swimming beaches (with public access) –  Nutgrove  and  Long Beach,  being the two main beaches. Australia’s first legal casino was opened in 1973 at the site of the former Wrest Point Riviera Hotel.

Battery Point  is one of Tasmania’s older established suburbs, the first home built there was in 1805 and many beautifully restored cottages adorn the streets today. Battery Point was named after the battery of guns which were established on the point in1818 as part of Hobart’s coastal defences (a park stands there today). The guns were only fired for ceremonial events. The main street of Hampden Road is home to some of Hobart’s best restaurants and cafes, art and gift shops.

Your next experience is to  Hobart’s unique waterfront ‘wharf’  area. These areas are  Victoria Dock  (a working fishing harbour) and  Constitution Dock  (hosting fish punts and even the odd seal sighting)! Take in the picturesque row of three- and four-storey sandstone warehouses along  Salamanca Place  – a classic example of Australian colonial architecture, dating back to the whaling days of the 1830’s.

After leaving the water front we travel across the Tasman Bridge (which holds its own history of being re-built after its collapse during the early 1970’s), to the eastern shore of Hobart and continue on to experience the rich farming land as we head towards Richmond.

On to the next stop at the oldest bridge in Australia, the  Richmond Bridge (Circa – 1823) , then on to  Richmond Village . This would be known as one of Tasmania’s most popular destinations…steeped in history. Nestled in the heart of the Coal River Valley, Richmond was established as an important military staging post and convict station that linked Hobart with Port Arthur. The elegant Georgian architecture, with beautiful heritage buildings (dating back as early as the 1820’s), nowadays, housing galleries, tea shops, craft boutiques and museums. Enjoy and experience 30 minutes of exploration in the village!

Your next destination is  Nocton Vineyard  – a dainty little cellar door that has a big view. Their staff take the time to guide you through exquisite wines, with guided tastings. Nothing is off limits and they include both their Estate and Reserve labels.

The next wine tastings to be truly enjoyed are at  Frogmore Creek Winery . The highly acclaimed wines are from this local, cool climate of the Coal River Valley, including the Forty Two Degrees South range! Frogmore’s Full Range includes: Cabernet – Cabernet Franc – Cabernet Sauvignon – Chardonnay – Cuvee – Gewürztraminer – Merlot – Petit Verdot – Pinot Grigio – Pinot Noir – Riesling – Rosé – Sauvignon Blanc – Shiraz and Sparkling.

By now you would be ready to start your oyster experience, this will be with a stop in at  Barilla Bay  for some mouth-watering oysters! They pride themselves on the quality of their farmed, fresh oysters and hospitality – they cover all your natural oyster needs!

Sit back and relax for your next stop at  Tas Live Abalone . Tas Live Abalone is a boutique marketing company operating from a state-of-the-art processing facility, located in Mornington. They primarily export premium wild abalone to international markets around the world. You will be led on a tour of the working factory – they endeavour to allow the tour to be as interactive and free range as possible, covering workplace health and safety standards at all times. At the end of the tour you will be given the opportunity of purchasing a variety of abalone and other seasonal Tasmanian seafood!

After this unique experience you will be dropped back at your accommodation at approximately 4:30/5:00pm.

“Oyster and Abalone farm tour” Review of Barilla Bay

tasmania abalone farm tour

The tour showed us how the Pacific Oysters were grown in pristine Barilla Bay. Then the harvesting of two types of Abalone was explained(green-lipped, only found in northern Tasmania, and black-lipped). This facility provides 25% of the abalone catch globally. The most prized and expensive product is candied abalone. We also tasted a few mouthfuls of several different Gillespie ginger beers. The tour guide was knowledgeable but spoke very quickly making it hard work for people that English is not their first language. As the tour ended we were able to taste half a dozen oysters. You can buy a dozen to take away for $13.95. The real shock was the price of this 40-minute tour. Adults A$39, Concession $29 and young children free. Very overpriced!

Staying in Tasmania for a whole week and have ordered oysters for almost every meal. However, this restaurant provides the best oyster in Tasmania. I had a round of golf in the morning and came here for lunch. It is close to the Hobart town and the airport (10 min drive). Ordered the 3-dozen giant oyster tasting platter. It costs AUS59. All the 8 different tastes (natural, 3 cold toppings and 4 hot toppings) were included in the platter. The natural ones were very fresh. The Shallot red wine vinaigrette is remarkable. Before coming here, I am not a fan of red wine vinegar topping for oyster. However, the vinaigrette here is seasoned to the perfection. It is sweeter than any red wine vinegar and carries a tinge of onion. Another topping that I like is the Kilpatrick. I tried Kilpatrick oysters in 5 different restaurants in Tasmania before coming to Barilla Bay but had been quite disappointed. The reason is most other restaurants put too much Worcestershire sauce on the oyster and completely cover any oyster freshness taste. The one in Barilla Bay got right in the proportion of onion, bacon and sauce. Other toppings are very nice as well. Initially also ordered seared scallop but cancelled that after finishing the oysters. 3 dozens of oysters (small Tasmanian ones) is good for one person. Also ordered a glass of sparkling wine. The oyster tasting platter is a must for oyster fans. The best place for oyster in Tasmania.

  • The Best Farm-Gate Stalls and Experiences in Tasmania

From wild honey to fresh oysters, farmhouse ale to snuffled-out truffles, find your way to the best farm-gate stalls and farm-to-table experiences in Tasmania with this post.

Fork It Farm Gate & Meat Shed

The Huon Valley

The north west, the midlands and central north, hobart and the south, the east coast, why not stay overnight on the farm.

Tasmania has built a reputation for producing world-class food and produce. Part of that is due to pristine climatic and growing conditions, but another part of it is the sheer diversity of quality food that the state produces. If you want to taste it straight from the source – as well as learn about how it is made and the people who do it – then be sure to put these fantastic farm-gate stalls and farm-to-table experiences on your next Tasmanian itinerary !

Rocky Ridge Farm Geeveston

Located on the road from Hobart down to Dover, the cute roadside stall of this hobby farm is always impressively stocked with in-season potatoes, fresh eggs, and a range of tasty jams, jellies and chutneys.

Our Mates’ Farm Geeveston

Setting a strong example of how to raise animals organically, ethically and sustainably, Our Mates’ Farm welcomes all visitors to see how they do things, meet the rare-breed pigs they raise, and taste some yummy apple juice (almost) straight off the tree.

Orchard raised lamb at Our Mates

Tasmanian Pepepr Co. Farm Shop Geeveston

They hold market days and offer workshops on everything from soil health and seed saving to sharpening tools and irrigation!

Cape Grim Beef

Tasmanian beef is renowned around Australia and the world, and few regions are as highly regarded as the wild North West coast (and offshore King Island). Cape Grim Beef, located right at the northwest tip of Tasmanian mainland, is therefore a destination to be marked for any grass-fed beef-loving visitors to Tasmania. You can see behind the scenes with a full cooking tour and farm visit, in collaboration with Provenance Kitchen .

Melita Honey Farm Chudleigh

Situated on the way from Launceston (45 minutes) towards the wild western rainforests that produce Tasmania’s world-famous leatherwood honey, Melita Honey Farm is a great place to visit for anybody wanting to learn more about this unique Tasmanian product. Tasmanian Truffles Deloraine

You may think black truffle hunts are reserved for the rolling hills of Italy and France. But think again! Providers of Australia’s first ever reliable black truffle source, this Deloraine farm (in the central north, just south of Launceston) is a must-visit stop for anybody who craves that unique, indescribable scent while visiting Tasmania. They offer tours and the chance to meet their highly skilled truffle hunter: Doug, the Labrador.

Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm Cafe Elizabeth Town

If you like berries in every conceivable way, then make a bee line for this popular raspberry farm and cafe, open 7 days. As well as being able to see where the berries come from (and maybe pick your own), you can take home a range of preserved products or sit down to a delicious fresh-berry meal at the cafe restaurant.

Tasmanian Natural Garlic and Tomatoes Selbourne

As well as being the closest grower (unsurprisingly) to the annual Tasmanian Tomato Festival, this organic farm is home to one of the state’s most important living tomato gene banks, producing more than 130 different heirloom varieties. They offer amazing workshops throughout the year, as well as tours and farm visits throughout the extended summer season.

The Truffledore on Cradle Country Farm Barrington

A full-circle, small-scale farm raising animals for natural fertiliser for their orchard, vegetable garden and truffle trees, the Truffledore offers a fantastic regenerative farm experience in the shadow of Tasmania’s iconic Cradle Mountain. Join the dogs for a truffle hunt, take part in a full paddock-to-plate cooking class, and stay overnight in one of their cute old-fashioned farm cottages.

Truffledore Farm tours and truffle hunts

Tunnel Hill Mushrooms Mount Rumney

Growers of different oyster and shitake mushrooms, a visit to this fascinating “farm” lets you see mushrooms mature in a unique “grow room” – the subterranean tunnels of a disused 19th-century railway tunnel. As well as delicious mushrooms, you can also taste shitake vodka and other mushroom-derived products.

They offer farm tours both on the water and on land, as well as a full kitchen and farm shop, open 9-5 daily.

Tasman Sea Salt Little Swanport

You can’t get a much bigger “farm” than the Pacific Ocean, and you won’t find a more useful ingredient anywhere than salt. That’s why this wonderful, clean-energy powered artisan sea salt producer on Tasmania’s East Coast is so fascinating to visit. You can see how the salt is harvested and learn why Tasmanian sea salt is so sought after, mainly for its high nutrient content and low sodium levels.

Welcome to our underwater world!

candy_abalone

Processing with a view! We sometimes forget to appreciate that we look out from our factory, across the garden and straight down on to the water. We have Pitt Water Nature Reserve just across the water, Barilla Bay, and just around the corner the long stretching sands of Seven Mile Beach - lucky us!It's hard to explain the impact that the conditions in our processing facility have on our abalone, with natural airflow, natural sunshine and our attention around the clock. But it is what makes these tender, candied and beautifully dried abalone, in our opinion, the best.

Tasmanian Racing Appeal Board reveals reasons for overturning harness trainer Ben Yole's ban

Ben Yole holds bridle of a horse.

Tasmania's leading harness trainer was not afforded "appropriate natural justice" when he was temporarily banned following the release of a damning report, an appeal board has found.

Independent integrity expert Ray Murrihy was tasked with probing the harness racing industry in response to allegations raised in an ABC investigation in March last year.

Mr Murrihy's report , released earlier this month, found Ben Yole had breached several racing rules relating to team driving, race fixing and animal welfare, all of which the trainer has previously denied.

The industry's governing body Tasracing subsequently issued Mr Yole with a 28-day "warning-off" notice , saying that because of the findings, his attendance at its racecourses had "a real and substantial likelihood of damaging the integrity and reputation" of the industry.

Three drivers named in Mr Murrihy's report were also issued with the same notices, which took immediate effect, albeit with an invitation to "show cause" as to why they should be rescinded.

Last week, the four men successfully appealed against the notices after arguing they had not been given an opportunity to be heard prior to the bans taking effect.

The Tasmanian Racing Appeal Board (TRAB) has now released its preliminary reasons for overturning the bans and allowing the men to resume their careers.

The TRAB found Tasracing did not have the legal authority to enforce the rules of racing, which it said could only be done by the Director of Racing or stewards.

"It may be accepted that Tasracing is rightly concerned that the racing activities undertaken in this state are undertaken with integrity and to protect the reputation of the industry to the extent that it can," the TRAB said.

"Tasracing, however, is not vested with the principal integrity functions related to the enforcement of the Rules or Racing, including by way of imposition of penalties and the licensing of participants."

The TRAB also found Tasracing failed to provide the men with an appropriate opportunity to contest the bans prior to them being issued, rejecting Tasracing's assertion the Murrihy findings constituted an "emergency situation".

"Even accepting that there are occasions where it may be necessary to take urgent action to issue a notice before affording a person the opportunity to be heard … the TRAB is not satisfied that Tasracing's approach was appropriate in the circumstances of these cases," it said.

"Against that background, the TRAB has concluded that issuing a warning-off notice for a not insignificant period prior to affording an opportunity to be heard or 'show cause' why the notice should not be issued did not afford the appellants appropriate natural justice."

The TRAB ended its four-page statement of reasons with a critical assessment of Tasracing's actions.

"The power to issue a [warning-off] notice is one that should be (and is) exercised rarely," it said.

"It is arguably inappropriate for another body, without those express functions and powers, to do so by way of a side-wind, particularly in circumstances that bypass the ordinary rights to be heard associated with conventional approaches to dealing with such concerns."

In its statement, the TRAB also noted the impact of the bans on the four men, particularly Mr Yole.

"It is uncontroversial that the warning-off notices prevent each of the appellants from participating in the harness racing industry in any capacity which has had a significant financial impact on them all.

"As a licensed trainer, the impact on Benjamin Yole is particularly acute.

"There are time frames for nominating horses to start in races.

"Mr Yole is expected to have horses racing in Hobart this Saturday. It will take time to get the horses in his care fit to race as he has not been able to undertake any training activities."

Tasracing said it had noted the TRAB's decision to uphold the appeal.

"Tasracing is considering the decision fully before providing further comment," a spokesman said.
