A Boat Tour of the Negombo Lagoon

Freedom, open air and calm blue waters, all year around, explore, dream, discover the world as seen from a boat..

Looking for a way to spend a relaxing day out? How about taking a leisurely boat trip through a scenic route at the seaside village of Negombo?

Our trip will take place down the clear cool waters of the Hamilton Canal. Originally constructed by the Dutch and later fortified by the British in 1802, this canal was named after Gavin Hamilton. Our journey begins at Negombo and will take you past views of fishermen who are getting their nets ready for their next sail, see the boats being launched to sea and the excess catches being washed and sun dried to be sold out as ‘dried fish’

We provide you with the best local professionals and all safety equipment you will need while travelling. We will serve you refreshingly fresh watermelons and other fruits along and quench your thirst with the delicious natural water of the fruit of the King coconut tree.

The trip would last around 1 ½ to 2 hours and it will be a calming and relaxing experience with the calm and chill breeze of the lagoon gently cooling you.

Our journey through the canal will lead us to the lagoon which is fed by a number of small rivers and the canal. It is surrounded by a densely populated mangrove swamp and attracts a variety of water birds including gulls, egrets and other shore birds.

Experience the sights and sounds of the lagoon from the best vantage point you can hope to find.

Negombo Lagoon, View, Boat Trips, and Fishing

Among the most famous attractions in Negombo, this lagoon includes the popular Muthurajawela marsh located in its southern area. The lagoon has a close connection with the famous fishing industry in Negombo, with fishing taking place all through the year and using 22 fishing methods, 13 of which are entirely conventional. The land here largely supports agricultural production and forest management and is therefore surrounded by coconut estates, paddy fields, and vegetation. Prawns and lagoon crabs captured here are in high demand and are considered to be highly tasty.

Negombo Lagoon Tour Introduction: Come with us to enjoy the natural features of the Lagoon of Negombo. Our welcoming and the trained crew welcomes you to a special sailing experience in the calm waters of one of the main coastal lagoons in Sri Lanka. Break free the sights and sounds of the town of Negombo as we carry you on an exotic trip in a fishing boat.

From the handy dock on the famous Hamilton Canal, we travel a short distance through the center of the old town of Negombo before reaching the lagoon. Did you know that Negombo Lagoon tours & boat trips are among the best things to do in Negombo? You’ll get a near glimpse at the coastal fishing life when we drive by the fish markets and dozens of fishing vessels in all sizes – from little lagoon canoes to massive ocean trawlers.

Our English-speaking guide will share tales about our rural culture and describe the natural world as we float through the mountains of coconut trees, mangrove forests, all kinds of birds, and sea life. You will love the beautiful nature of the Negombo lagoon and unwind as you enjoy the amazing views of peaceful and calm waters.

Why Should You Book Negombo Lagoon Tours?

  • Negombo is best known for its beach and the lagoon – the shoreline for its water activities and the lagoon for a memorable boat ride. The surfing possibilities and the fishing opportunity of the lagoon attract the tourists’ interest to the town of Negombo.
  • We provide this chance to enjoy a personalized boat trip in the lagoon. Lovely boat trips in the lagoon deliver beautiful fishing spots, bird watching, and spectacular scenery.
  • Some of the visitors find these cruise trips the top of their list of adventures. This is precisely why the eco-tourism value of the Negombo Lagoon will soon become as widely known as the Yala tourism for tourists to Sri Lanka. Boat trips are organized both in the morning and in the evening.
  • We arrange these trips with the proper care of our clients, with the best travel, health, and comfort of our visitors, and with good and well-qualified guides. Including birds to crocodiles, you can see several of the animals during such cruise trips.
  • Some beach resorts in Negombo provide the best luxury experience for travelers looking for lodging and tour guides in the area. All in all, Negombo lagoon boat safaris and tours are a perfect choice for adventurous travel lovers and bird watchers.

Typical Negombo Lagoon Boat Trip: Before the lagoon tour, we can take you to visit the busy Negombo fish market called “Lellama” and watch the boats come back with crabs, fresh fish, lobster, cabbage, and squid. You can also purchase your own choice of fish to incorporate in the Grilled Seafood Lunch.

The lagoon has a vast mangrove marsh and a friendly boat or a catamaran ride will encourage you to see some of the unusual species of plants and animals in the region, like water birds such as terns, herons, cormorants, and shorebirds.

You’ll be escorted to the restaurant for lunch, where you can either watch the Chef/Cook preparing the Grilled Seafood for you or allow him to cook the fish you’ve ordered! Then you will taste the delicious Grilled Seafood. After lunch, you’ll take out for an exciting boat trip and head back to the hotel or your preferred destination.

They were very accommodating and so friendly! I arrived early to the airport and he came quickly even though it was 30 minutes early. Also very reasonably priced. We had the pleasure of Kamal our lovely guide and driver taking us to Dambulla Caves, Kandy, The tooth of the Relic Temple, the Lake and the early morning climb of Pidurangula to see the sunrise over Sigiriya. We loved our tours with Kamal as he was so friendly, interesting and knowledgeable. • 560laurenk 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Communicative, reasonably priced and highly professional We used this company for our initial pick up from the airport. As soon as the booking was made, Premil was in touch with me via whatsapp so that I had his details. Our driver (Shane) was ready and waiting at the airport and the pick up was seamless. After that, we continued to contact Premil and Shane for our future transport needs along the south coast. The cars used were always in perfect condition (and more importantly... with AC!) and given how communicative both Premil and Shane were, we were able to make arrangements very quickly. We also found the price to be very reasonable. Overall, I'd highly recommend Real Lanka Holidays for all of your transport needs on the island. Read more Written 26 February 2024

  • Britt T 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic company for transfers! We had decided to book our first transfer from the UK so we didn't have the hassle of trying to arrange this straight after landing. Premil (who I believe is the owner of the company) was in touch while we were still in the UK to let us know he'd be our driver to Sigiriya, and was in constant communication with us until we got in the car. He very kindly offered a complimentary drive out to Pidurangala after we'd settled into our hotel that afternoon too! From then on we ended up using Real Lanka Holidays for all our long transfers on the island as Premil was just so easy to contact and arrange the transfers with. The price was ALWAYS fair, often times a bit better than other companies Google came up with, and he could arrange them without much notice at all. Premil would send us a picture of the car and name of the driver who'd be picking us up, and they were always early - we didn't have to wait once. All the drivers were friendly and polite but I do have give a special mention to Kamal who drove us from Sigiriya to Kandy - he was an absolute gem and a mountain of knowledge, he made the 2 hour transfer into a real experience. All in all I very highly recommend booking your transfers with Real Lanka Holidays! Thank you for making getting around Sri Lanka so seamless Read more Written 16 February 2024
