Overall, we enjoyed our tour immensely – but with two (2) exceptions. FIRST: The day when the tour began we looked forward to going to an Australian indigenous museum. I believe it was called “Birrunga”. In particular and on the forms required to go on the tour, I highlighted my desire to learn about the Indigenous People (history, pictures, today in society, future and special beliefs). What we experienced on the tour was an Art exhibition by one artist who was very difficult to hear, who could not answer questions about his own people, who did not have handouts so we could understand some native words and pointed to pictures expressing his interpretation of a particular thought. Others on the tour felt the same way. Then we were taken back to the hotel and told the rest of the day we were on our own. SECOND: We were promised a trip to the exotic Whitsunday Island. We had heard from friends and through reading that this was a must for our tour. However, at the last minute (and almost exactly the last minute) we were told the trip to Whitsunday Island had been cancelled and we would receive a refund. Because of the late notification we were unable to make plans for the cancelled day. We tried to fill that day on our own with other excursions, like dinner cruises, etc. but they were all fully booked. And that was an entire day from tour that Trafalgar failed to meet their obligation. In speaking with other tour members who were upset, we interpreted your decision to cancel shocking, disappointing and not in line with the high expectations we had from your statements about the tour. We did not know if the Whitsunday excursion was cancelled because of mechanical reasons, crew problems, ship problems and were left with the impression we were cancelled because of the size of our group (13) and replaced by a larger group. Although you refunded our money for that, our tour day was lost. Not good! SUMMARY: Christin was wonderful throughout. Regarding the Whitsunday cancellation, she showed her understanding of our disappointment. However, as a result of these two issues, with special emphasis on Whitsunday, we feel Trafalgar did not live up to the high expectations you promised us.
Wonderful trip, Hope and Rick were amazing hosts.

New Zealand is a land with many places to see. It is a place rich in sites and in history, owing to the fact that two separate cultures have occupied the space. Fortunately our tour director and guide Chantavee was excellent at explaining both the history and providing context to the sites. I did not lower my reading due to the fact that the bus ride just sucked; it was a necessary part of the overall experience.
Overall an excellent tour. But it was surprising and disappointing that in some of the hotels, the shower was in the bath.

we had a fabulous time! If there would be a complaint it would be that we had a lot more meals and fun than what was advertised. Can't compliment this trip enough!
Had not travelled with Scenic before however I am now a convert. Totally enjoyed the places we visited and the free choices available. Top class local guides and excellent activities. New Zealand itself is beautiful. We were a group of 40 and everyone was fabulous. Our tour director Sally was brilliant, totally in touch with everyone and very jolly all along. Very professional. Our driver Alan was also excellent, very knowledgeable on all the places we travelled through. What a lot of fun.

Meals along the way were to rushed with having to find place to eat and eat before getting on the bus. Would be better for preorder, have in a cooler on the bus so we can just stop, relax and eat at nice spot along the way. Loved mix of internationals and ages in the group. Hostels were clean and well located. Guide was organized and kept group together and on time. Coordination and information dispensed was not good between TourRadar, Haka Tours and Intrepid. Questions asked kept being referred to be answered by actual guide when on the trip and felt I would have preferred to know what was possible (subject to weather) before arrival as response several times was advised this might not be tour for me.

this tour was just a huge disappointment, this is overpriced, unorganized and leaves you sorry for all the money you spent. of course the sights you will see are amazing, but the tour itself just makes you sad. the guide had absolutely no plan at anytime what was going on, due to this lack of organization, it was always quite hectic rushing from one place to the next. also I made bookings for activities back when I booked the tour itself months in advance, just to realize once I was at the activity it was not prebooked. here it’s advertised as 18-39, which was actually not true, more like an average of 45+. the hostels are not high-end, they are just normal average youth hostels. I did reach out to them on the second day, explaining the circumstances, but sadly did not receive a very constructive answer and no resulting action. honestly, I‘m just mad.
Everyday was different. A well planned out tour giving a rich experience. You want to know what Maori culture is in a short time? This is it!!!!!!

What appeared to be a great tour on paper, turned out to be pretty ordinary. A number of things should have been done better to make it an enjoyable experience, but a number of issues let the participants down. Firstly, the guide, Rob, while a nice enough guy, was very underprepard for the tour. He had not been on any of the walking tracks for some years, and the notes the office gave him were either inaccurate, or just plain wrong. The walks were poorly planned, two of them feeling like route marches, rather than an enjoyable hike. Rob's knowledge of the geography and fauna and flora was good, but his rcent knowledge of the hikes was poor. Secondly, the hikes were not recently assessed for suitability. The hike to Mt. Robert and Mt. Isobel were treacherous and downright dangerous. A fail for whoever in the company thought these hikes were suitable. Thirdly, lunch options on the last two days were not great. Service station sandwiches just don't cut it when you pay so much for a tour. On a good note, the accommodation was good, especially Lochmara Lodge. The dinners were excellent, apart from the first night which wasn't Rob's fault. Breakfasts were also very good. All in all, a disappointing experience when it could have been so much better with careful planning based on recent experience, and a guide who was prepared.

My 3-week trip to New Zealand was fantastic! We saw a lot of the country, even though it was during Christmas and New Year's. Some activities weren't available due to the holidays, but our guides, Ben and Tegan, made sure we had a great time regardless. Ben and Tegan were amazing, sharing interesting facts about New Zealand and keeping the trip fun. The tour offered good value, with nice accommodations (except for one place in Rotorua) and enjoyable included activities. Just keep in mind the cost of optional activities when planning your budget. Also, expect some long drives. Being at the back of the bus can make it hard to see the scenery. Overall, the trip was memorable, thanks to the careful planning and the effort of our guides to ensure we didn't miss out on the fun, despite the holiday season.
This was a great tour, comfy bus, super fun activities, legendary tour guide.

Globus

  • Excellent - 14,883 reviews for New Zealand tours
We are on the 20 day New Zealand - Australia tour. We do not recommend this tour. This review is sadly because our bus driver, Glenn, said quite a few obviously racist things about Indigenous Australians on our bus ride to and from Uluru. We have been on several Globus tours over the years, and we are very disappointed that Globus employs a company and people with this kind of harmful and backward thinking. On our trip to Uluru on Nov. 15., Glenn told us that Indigenous people are thieves. He said the Indigenous people specifically are responsible for theft in Alice Springs and along the highways. While passing Mount Ebenezer he told us that the Indigenous people are “true communists” and did a bad job running the gas station in the area, which caused the rest stop to close. Glenn then said that someone else tried to open the station again, but the Indigenous people “showed up with spears” and caused the new owner to close the gas station. He actually said, “showed up with spears.” Perhaps Glenn thinks that because it was a bus full of white people he could get away with being overtly racist. But no we are not ok with it. Racism is wrong. On this Globus trip in Australia we’ve had no access to an Indigenous Australian guide to give us a balanced viewpoint. Instead, we were given racist views about a group of people who were not there to defend themselves and add important context. I wrongly presumed we would be given some kind of properly assembled educational information about Indigenous Australian groups directly from Indigenous people, like we received in New Zealand. The “educational” video we watched on the bus to Uluru romanticized the colonization of Australia, depicting the English colonists as heroes and hard workers who earned their right to be here and makes no mention of how these colonists displaced the Indigenous people and basically stripped them of their land and culture. I had to google everything to learn more. This is literal whitewashing of history and distorts the reality of what happened. We are shocked at how blatantly outdated this driver and company are in the changing world.
Gets to the main places but not the best planned tour. Very compressed timelines for the trip, leave you feeling rushed through many destinations. Sometimes not even enough time to eat, or no place. No suggestions or prep from guide. And yet, there's a lot of time on the bus and/or the plane - 5 hour layover for a plane to get to the hotel at midnight. Often felt disorganized - I get everything had just reopened but seems the hotels were often unprepared for us coming, excursions that people had booked for months suddenly unavailable or not booked by company. Couldn't they call in advance, for example, to make sure there's enough food at a hotel dinner??? Tour guide wasn't great

What mushroom are you guys living under. New Zealand has barred foreigners from entering. So we didn't get to travel. Tim
Spectacular scenery. Long distances covered each day, average hotels, weak tour director and a driver that really didn’t get on with the TD. Southern Escapes is part of a longer tour that we joined mid-way. Many of the other passengers had formed their opinions of the TD and driver and this did create an unfortunate atmosphere.

The tour started on a wrong note because we were not met at the airport in Auckland. After some time and effort another gentleman unrelated to the tour drove us to our hotel and wouldn't dream of taking any money. This was the first of many interfaces with NZ people, who seem to be universally friendly and helpful. Once we met with tour director Fernando and the rest of our tour group the trip was terrific. Although this was billed as "rail tour" we spent much more time on the tour bus then on the rails. However, the two bus drivers - John and then Rob - were excellent and provided local insight into all of the areas we visited, in a knowledgeable and humorous manner. We managed to leave our passports in a hotel safe, and Fernando went all out to recover them for us. The tour group were all seniors, and we made some good friends that we hope to see again. The NZ weather was perfect for the whole tour, and we were in warm dry Christchurch when Auckland had their floods Clearly we would have needed a much longer time to see all that NZ has to offer, but what we did see was impressive - incredible greenery, roads and rail lines installed thru impossible terrain, huge cattle and sheep herds, entrepreneurship displayed every where. Terrific tour, nice folks!
Our tour director, Daniel, did a really good job and made our 6 days very enjoyable. The bus driver was also very good and they were both a joy to be around. Their hard work and effort for our benefit was much appreciated.

Travel Agents Specializing in New Zealand

New zealand travel agent specialists since 1988.

Thanks for visiting our website! We at Go Walkabout Travel Agency are your Travel Agents, Specializing in New Zealand and Australia for travelers from the USA and Canada.

With over 30 years of expertise specializing in travel to New Zealand, you are guaranteed to receive the specialized knowledge from your Travel Agent that only a local would know.

Here are some tips from our Travel Agents Specializing in New Zealand on what you need to be mindful of when planning your trip.

1/ If you are traveling with a U.S. or Canadian passport, you will need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) holiday in New Zealand. We can assist you with applying for one.

Your passport must be valid for at least six months after you return to North America, and if you have any previous criminal records, you may be denied entry. You also may be asked for proof that you can support yourself during your visit and must not enter on a one-way ticket. Airlines may request this information before boarding a flight.

2/ New Zealand is a small country that gets busy during great weather. The best times to visit New Zealand are between October and April.

Remember, the South Island will be colder, so if you want to enjoy decent weather in both areas, then your Travel Agents specializing in New Zealand suggest anywhere from Dec-March as a great time to visit. We like the March-April period as it is after the mad rush of Summer.

3/  The best way to travel around New Zealand  is to self-drive and fly. Most roads in New Zealand are single lanes (unless you are on a major highway); they can be very winding, and you need to be mindful of sheep!

New Zealand is not a country where you rush between places when driving for safety! Remember, New Zealand driving is very different from going to Chicago, Toronto, or even Dallas! They also drive on the opposite side of the road!

For those who may not be comfortable with self-driving, we can organize a rail journey, private tour guides, and private transfers via road, and everything will still be designed as a custom tour just for you.

4/Jet lag always hits the hardest upon returning to Canada and the USA.

After enjoying your luxury vacation in New Zealand, allow yourself an extra day or two before returning to work. Many of our clients on the East Coast, i.e., Atlanta, Boston, and Tampa, like to have a stopover on their return to break that extra-long journey. You can trust the advice from your Travel Advisor Specializing in New Zealand- they have all flown this route many times!

5/ Not only is your  Travel Agent specializing in New Zealand here to give you all their advice when designing your vacation, but we also provide you with access to our 24/7 support emergency line in New Zealand. We always have your back, no matter what!

6/ Your dedicated travel agent will work with you on mapping out your dream vacation; we will look at your wants and needs and consider your budget.

Your  Travel Agents specializing in New Zealand  are born and raised in the South Pacific and know it like the back of their hand! There will be no cookie-cutter itinerary for your vacation to New Zealand! Whether you visit the highlights of the North Island, the South Island, or the whole country, we have you covered.

7/ Book early! Our New Zealand Travel Agents need time to plan and design a once-in-a-lifetime custom itinerary.

The earlier you book, the better your chance of staying in the best accommodation options and getting the first choice on small group tours.

Limited daily flights depart from Houston, San Francisco, Vancouver, Chicago, and Los Angeles to Auckland. New Zealand is getting busier and busier with events and conferences, so play it safe and have your customized vacation package tailor-made early! Contact one of our Travel Planners.

8/ We highly recommend a stopover in the South Pacific Islands or visiting Australia on your way to or from New Zealand

Talk to one of our Travel Agents specializing in Australia, and they will be happy to share their travel experience and discuss crafting a custom Australia and New Zealand vacation package .

Did you know that airfares often do not cost much extra when traveling to Australia and New Zealand? The beautiful  Cook Islands , Fiji, and Tahiti are your other leisure stopover options when traveling to/from North America to the South Pacific.

9/ New Zealand has many different accommodation options and activities. Your Travel expert specializing in New Zealand will work closely with you to match you with the best choices on your trip to New Zealand.

We suggest a mixture of the following:

  • An overnight farm stay with a local family.
  • New Zealand luxury lodges  (we all deserve a treat.)
  • Apartments so you can do some laundry
  • Boutique Hotels.
  • Bed and Breakfasts.
  • An overnight cruise on Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound , where you may see some wildlife.

A mixture of the above options will give you a good overview of authentic life when you are on your trip in New Zealand.

Our Travel Agents who Specialize in New Zealand Vacations look forward to designing you a custom vacation utilizing their years of knowledge, service, and attention to detail.

Our travel company can tailor-make you a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Whether planning an action-packed family holiday, attending a conference, celebrating a wedding anniversary, taking advantage of that well-deserved graduation gift, or finally relaxing on that luxury romantic honeymoon.

The top new zealand tours.

Touring New Zealand is easy. No matter who you are, what you are into or where you want to go in New Zealand; there’s a tour company in New Zealand ready to show you the way. From companies that specialise in small-group tours for the young backpacker to luxury tours for the mature traveller, you have plenty of New Zealand tour companies to choose from. We go through some of our top picks in this guide to the best tour companies in New Zealand!

While you’re here, you might be interested in browsing some specific tours in The Best 7-Day Tours of New Zealand , The Best 10-12-Day Tours of New Zealand and The Best 20+ Days Tours of New Zealand . Plus, don’t forget to bookmark Travel by Bus in New Zealand: The Ultimate Guide for even more tips.

6 Tips for Planning a Tour of New Zealand

  • Allow a day or two on either end of your tour  for your travel time to New Zealand, as well as time to get over the jet lag and explore your arrival city
  • Pack light : many of the tours are in twin or multi-share rooms where you will not only want to take up a lot of room but be able to keep a track of all your luggage! See our New Zealand Packing List  for more packing advice.
  • Use websites like Tourradar to easily compare tour companies. Another advantage of using these websites is that they have standard cancellation policies should your travel plans change
  • There will always be optional activities to take part in at an extra cost. Decide on a few of these before your trip departs so you are able to budget correctly
  • On a similar note, allow room in your budget for meals , as most New Zealand tours don’t have all meals included – see How Much Does a Trip to New Zealand Cost? for typical food prices in New Zealand
  • Virtually meet your fellow tour-goers before your trip by joining your tour company’s Facebook Group (if they have one).

How Air New Zealand’s shrinking winter network is affecting passengers and the airline

Grant Bradley

Reminder, this is a Premium article and requires a subscription to read.

Travel agents are scrambling to rebook thousands of passengers affected by Air New Zealand’s pause of flights between Auckland and Chicago this winter.

The airline will suspend its three-times a week service from March 31 for six months, affecting more than 13,400 passengers. This is on top of hundreds of thousands impacted by engine issues affecting two other international services and its domestic routes.

It comes at a critical time for the airline that has a gloomy financial outlook for the current six months and has said it is facing higher costs such as wages, now spread over a shrunken network this winter.

The pause on Chicago also comes as the airline faces increased competition to North America from big United States airlines that have been flying to this country, rather than putting planes back on routes to China, a market slower to recover from the pandemic.

Auckland Airport says competition resulted in a 12 per cent fall in fares on North American routes.

Chief executive Greg Foran said following the release of its half-year result last month, that the airline didn’t want to be the first to blink and take capacity off US routes where there has been significant discounting. But one analyst said this has now happened.

One travel agent said the impact of the Chicago move was significant and came on top of the suspension of services to Hobart and Seoul announced last year, also due to engine maintenance issues.

The announcement to pause Chicago was made last week and this meant a scramble to change some passengers’ plans, said House of Travel chief operating officer Brent Thomas.

‘‘It’s a significant disruption for thousands of people. The issue is, the airline ticket is only one component and there are many land arrangements that need to be organised as well. From an agent perspective, we’re busy doing rescheduling right now.”

Air NZ chief customer and sales officer Leanne Geraghty said the route was an important part of the overall Air NZ network and has been paused as it worked through the availability of serviceable aircraft engines.

‘‘There are no other routes at risk. We have made the decision to pause Chicago (where it started flights in 2018) as it had the least impact on customers and our operations and enables us to ensure we can get customers to their destinations on our wider network over the coming six months,’' she told the Herald .

Customers with bookings on Chicago services will be rebooked with a connection through another US airport to get them to their destination as quickly as possible.

Customers who booked directly with Air NZ have been issued with new itineraries during the past week.

Customers could opt to receive a full refund or place their booking into credit. Air NZ provides 35 services a week to other US and Canada destinations.

When it announced the pause, Geraghty said it was a ‘‘difficult decision to make,’' but it resulted in the least number of customers impacted.

“We know this will be disappointing for customers travelling to and from Chicago during this period, especially to those travelling over the upcoming April holiday break. It’s not a decision we’ve made lightly and we’re sorry to make this change so close to the time some customers plan to fly.

Air NZ continues to be impacted by fallout from limited availability of Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, meaning up to three aircraft of its 14-strong Dreamliner fleet will be unavailable for an extended period.

The long running Rolls-Royce engine issue continues to plague all airlines using them after turbine blade issues came to light in 2018.

Air NZ has said Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines normally require heavy maintenance, where they are taken off the aircraft and sent to the offshore manufacturer for inspection, after 1000 engine cycles (take-offs and landings).

During regular inspections, Air NZ engineers identified that the engines required maintenance after 750-850 cycles. Rolls-Royce has been unable to provide Air NZ with spare or replacement engines to deliver the level of service needed, leading to a reduction in the amount of flying Air NZ can deliver via its 787 fleet. It has opted for GE engines on the coming order of eight new Dreamliners.

The Rolls-Royce issue was behind the pause of its Auckland-Seoul route (from April 1) but it was another engine problem that forced the suspension of Auckland-Hobart services from April 5.

Pratt & Whitney (P&W) engines are spending longer off wings of A320/321 aircraft than expected which could ground up to five of its A320s at any one time for up to two years. Last year it said more than 300,000 passengers would be affected, some would be on a different plane and wouldn’t notice it while others would face disruption through new flight times and cancellations.

The analyst’s view

Forsyth Barr’s head of research Andy Bowley said the decision to pause Chicago was logical.

‘’Air NZ are good custodians of their network, in that context the decisions they’ve made in recent times reflect network optimisation. It’s removing the worst contributors from a broader network perspective.”

North America had been the shining light of its international network as it recovered from the pandemic but American Airlines and United Airlines had returned strong to this market and Delta Air Lines had started year round services for the first time.

“Its’ a sign of the times with Chicago being pulled temporarily in light of the level of competition and the reduced demand that they’re experiencing American routes at the moment,’’ he said.

‘’They have blinked. It’s unfortunate in terms of broader market position, if it has any lasting impact. It’s only a temporary helps in that regard.’’

Any schedule disruption put added strain on airline operations, said Bowley.

Another commentator said Air NZ’s suspension of Chicago allowed rival airlines to take more passengers off it.

The Americans came

Auckland Airport said there was a 58 per cent increase in available seats to mainland North America over summer 2023/24 compared to the previous period.

There were 500,000 travellers between mainland North America and Auckland, from November last year to February, with half the arrivals from the US.

Most US visitors travel here in summer and autumn, stay up to two weeks and spend close to $6000 per person on average.

Scott Tasker, chief customer oficer at Auckland Airport, said the mix of exciting new routes and additional carriers has cracked open the North American market, creating airfare competition and driving the demand.

“There’s been 20 per cent more New Zealanders and a whopping 56 per cent increase in Americans and 14 per cent increase in Canadians flying the North American routes over summer. The market is now bigger than it was in 2019,” said Tasker.

Between October and March, seven airlines have been flying non-stop to eight North American cities from Auckland. Between March to October, the Northern Summer aviation season, four airlines will continue flying non-stop between Auckland Airport and six North American cities.

“The capacity and competition have really benefited travellers with some great fares, which overall are down 12 per cent,’'said Tasker.

‘’There’s never been more seats available between Auckland Airport and North America, and what we’re seeing is travellers are really taking advantage of this,” he said.

The Los Angeles route had gone from one airline – Air NZ – flying once a day last summer, to having Air NZ, American Airlines, Delta and United Airlines flying four times a day.

“The Californian market has traditionally been strong for inbound tourism and when we look at the 40 million-odd Americans who had NZ at the top of their travel bucket list, more than 20 per cent call California home. We’ve seen that flow through into traveller numbers with a 200 per cent increase in US nationals on the route this summer.”

Grant Bradley has been working at the Herald since 1993. He is the Business Herald’s deputy editor and covers aviation and tourism.
