running tour of tokyo

Tokyo, Japan is one of the largest and most densely populated cites in the world. It is a fascinating city, mixing history and tradition with commercial interests and glitz. Tokyo is also a significant destination for business and leisure travelers. The situation for running in Tokyo is better than you might think. It might not be possible to step right outside your door and go for a great run, but with some planning there are some wonderful running possibilities. If you’d like to have an in-person guided running experience in Tokyo, we highly recommend our friends at Go! Running Tours .

The best places to run in central Tokyo revolve around the Akasaka Palace , the Imperial Palace , and Yoyogi Park . There are also good paths along the along  Tama , Meguro , Arakawa , and Sumida rivers. Another favorite run is a loop around Odaiba Island . If you’re in the Tokyo Disney/Chiba area, we’ve mapped a nice run along Tokyo Bay through several seaside parks. For a hill running adventure, head to Mount Kumotori . We’ve also created some special routes passing by Tokyo 2020 Olympics venues…that are also nice runs! See also our guide to Yokohama .  NOTE: Some parks in Tokyo don’t open till 8am.

A quick geographic orientation: the Imperial Palace is the heart of the city, and many of the government and administrative offices are in that area (Kasumigaseki). Main commercial areas are Ginza and Shinjuku to the south, and Ikebukuro to the north. The Yamanote Line is the the railway that circles much of the main part of the city. The central downtown part of Tokyo is relatively flat, but becomes hillier to the west and the north. Tokyo is also defined by its rivers and by Tokyo Bay.Although staying within some proximity of these spots will allow for easy access to a good run, Tokyo’s extensive public transportation system provides easy access to all of our routes. Even better, in some spots there are hotels and other facilities that allow you to change and shower, for free or for a modest fee.

Many thanks to Namban Rengo , a wonderful running club in Tokyo, for their help in preparing this guide. We’ve also mapped out the best places to run in Yokohama , Japan’s second largest city, located  35 km south of Tokyo.

If you’re in Tokyo for a business trip and don’t have a lot of time, you’ll want to try to stay within proximity of a good running spot. There are lots of hotels in Shinjuku, just north of Yoyogi Park and the National Garden. Also, south of Yoyogi Park there’s a good selection in the Shibuya area. Another good option is the Chiyoda area. There are a few hotels in between the Akasaka and Imperial palaces, and a larger number just east if the Imperial Palace. New Otani Hotel, Palace Hotel, and Akasaka Tokyu are good hotels with great locations.

Near the Meguro River trail, there are lots of hotels in the Shibuya area, just to the northeast of Ikejiri-Ohashi station, and in the Shinagawa area, near the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum. The Westin Tokyo in this area has running maps and hosts group runs in the morning. There are some good hotels in the Ota area, just east of the the southern section of the Tama River trail.

Another option is to stay on or near Odaiba. Great access to running, but a little far from business districts.

There are running stores central locations near running. Several stores are in the Shinjuku area just north of the Akasaka Palace. Adidas RunBase is a great location along the 246 between the Akasaka and Imperial Palace. There are Asics, Puma, and Nike stores just outside of Yoyogi Park. On Odaiba, there’s a Puma store.

Art Sports is a small specialty running store chain, with several locations in Tokyo: the Taito area just south of the museum cluster; at Shibuya station; in the Ginza near Hibya station; and just north of Inokashira Park, near the Tamagawa Josui trail.

  • Running Around Tokyo: a friendly guide for tips and routes

If you jog for fun or run races, running around Tokyo is a great way to combine your hobby with sightseeing. Be inspired by the athletes of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 and take your sightseeing to a new level. Running around Tokyo allows you to see how the city fits together. When you take the train or subway, you usually only learn about the area around the station. This guide will help you run like a local.

running tour of tokyo

Whether you’re a gentle jogger or a regular race eventer, a run around Tokyo lets you combine this great form of exercise with experiencing the city sights. Running is a popular pastime in Japan and it’s common to see people of all ages and speed jogging around the city. This guide gives some practical tips about running in Tokyo, lists some popular routes and makes some suggestions for point-to-point routes. Join local Tokyoites, hit the streets and see how Tokyo fits together.

When to Run

In July and August, it already feels hot by 8 am. If you’re not used to running in the heat and humidity, it’s best to run early in the morning or evening. Because of the humidity, it’s fairly warm at night. At other times of the year, when to run depends on avoiding crowded times.

Safety tips

Smaller streets don’t have sidewalks and are not always brightly lit at night. If you run at night, wear something bright or reflective to help drivers see you. There are many blind intersections, make sure to check for traffic. Most electric cars in Japan don’t make a lot of road noise and are hard to hear, especially if you are listening to music with earbuds. When there is no separate path for cyclists, they will ring a bell when they want to pass. Not many give verbal warnings about which side they are passing on. If you hear “abunai!” that means danger.

Drinks and bathroom stops

If you’re running in Tokyo, a cool drink is always nearby. There are many convenience stores, grocery stores, and coffee shops. Vending machines are common sights on the street.

If you need to use the toilet, it’s possible to stop at a convenience store, grocery store or coffee shop. It’s courteous to buy something if you use a facility. The majority of public toilets do not require money or tokens to use them. Train stations are a good choice, though smaller stations usually have toilets inside the gate and you have to pay to get in. Most parks have public toilets but it’s best to have some toilet paper if it’s a small park.

After your run

Because of summer humidity, some joggers carry a small towel with them or plan to end their route at home or near a shower. You probably won’t get on a train dripping with sweat as trains can be very, very crowded. You have a couple of options. You can put your belongings (including a towel) in a train locker. Find a running station to keep your belongings and take a shower after you run. You might want to find a sento, a public bath house, for a Japanese bathing experience—a choice made by many joggers who run in a group. A quick option is to pick up some wipes at a convenience store or drugstore.

Showers and sentos and what to do with your belongings

Running stations are a recent trend in Tokyo. They are locker rooms with shower facilities designed for runners or cyclists. Sign in, put your stuff in a locker, run and shower after! Sentos are public bath houses. You can read about Japanese bath culture at here. It’s uncommon for a sento to store your belongings while you run. Most large train and metro stations in Tokyo have lockers to store belongings while you run. As you move into more residential areas, lockers are less common.

This popular course is busiest at lunch time when office workers take advantage of their lunch break to have a workout. When the weather gets hotter, it gets busier in the evening. This walkway is shared with pedestrians. Extend your workout by taking a lap around Hibiya Park. This running loop has several train stations and running stations with showers at different points around the loop.

Meiji Jingu Gaien – 1.5 km course

running tour of tokyo

Near the Olympic Stadium, this course around Meiji Jingu Gaien is popular with local runners. It’s flat, with no stoplights and no need to worry about traffic. This area has many sports facilities and has been an area for leisure since the Meiji era. Because of the trees, it is slightly cooler in summer. The fence is a common meeting place for people using this route. To the left is the Olympic Stadium.

Nearest stations: JR Shinanomachi, Chuo line, JR Sendagaya, Chuo line, Harajuku, Gaien Mae (Ginza and Hanzomon lines)

Yoyogi Park –Large loop 2.6km, Short loop: 1.3km

Yoyogi Park has 2 loops inside the park. It’s a popular park and quite crowded on weekends. Meiji Jingu Shrine is the closest park to Harajuku station. Do not run in the shrine area. Yoyogi park is just past the entrance to Meiji Jingu. It’s possible to run along the sidewalk encircling the park, but there is not much shade and it gets hot.

Nearest stations: Harajuku (Yamanote Line), Meiji-jingumae (Chiyoda Line)

Komazawa Olympic Park – 2.1 km course with a bike lane

running tour of tokyo

This park was one of the 1964 Tokyo Olympic venues. The asphalt route has designated bicycle and pedestrian lanes. The 10 minute walk from Komazawa Daigaku station makes for a nice warm up and cool down. Use the Komazawa Park exit. Turn left when you get to street level onto Komazawa street. Turn left at the next lights. Mr. Farmer cafe near the park west exit serves vegetables harvested locally for a post-run meal.

Nearest station: Komazawa-daigaku, Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line (Komazawa Park Exit, 8-10 min walk)

Gururi Park – 4.5 km loop

running tour of tokyo

This loop on Toyosu island goes around the new Tokyo Fish market. The market is closed on Sundays and many of the sushi shops in the area close in the early afternoon. The Olympic Athlete’s village is on the neighbouring island. The southern part of the route looks over Tokyo Bay and Rainbow Bridge. At sunset people line the railing to fish. The view of Rainbow Bridge’s illumination and the sunset silhouette of Mount Fuji shouldn’t be missed. If you plan ahead, you can end your run at the BBQ Beach. You can have a BBQ here and they provide all the equipment, food and drinks. Find out more about their plans at the website

Nearest station: Shin Toyosu, Yurikamome Line

Odaiba – 5k and 7k route

running tour of tokyo

There are two marked courses that loop around this man-made island. Currently, construction blocks this popular path until the end of November, but you can still run in the area. This route doesn’t have much shade, but with malls such as Decks, Aqua City and Venus Fort as well as many restaurants, there are plenty of places to relax after your run. This route includes the view of the 1/7 scale model of the Statue of Liberty and Rainbow Bridge against a skyscraper background.

Point-to-point running routes

A point-to-point route and returning to your home base helps you see more of the city. As more trains move underground, If you’re not sure what you want to see, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has an English webpage where you can select walking and running routes based on time, nearest station or the type of route you want. Choose routes by seasons, history and culture, town symbols and local streets or if they follow a waterway. You can download a PDF of your chosen route that includes distance, steps and recommended sites.

TOKYO WALKING MAP

Some Recommended point-to-point routes:

Asakusa to Tsukishima along the Sumida River – 9 km (optional)

running tour of tokyo

The terrace along the river has access stairs at intermittent points so you can start or stop wherever you like and shorten the route. Some of the stairs lead to neighbourhood backroads so it’s easier to start at Asakusa and end in Tsukishima.

Start: Asakusa Station End: Tsukishima Station

Rainbow Bridge to Tokyo Tower – 13 Km (depending on route)

running tour of tokyo

This route starts in Odaiba side base of Rainbow Bridge and ends at Tokyo Tower. The bridge is free to cross but the pedestrian route is not open 24 hours. Find out more about the hours here. After crossing the bridge, head to Ginza to see the Wako building (and stop for a coffee at one of the many cafes!), then run to the Imperial Palace. If you want to stop at the Imperial Palace Garden, remember not to run inside. Head northwest and end at Tokyo Tower. There is no set route and you can take various roads to get there, so indulge your curiosity as you run. Rainbow Bridge is free but the pedestrian route is not open 24 hours. Tama River From Tamagawa Station to Futakotamagawa Station

running tour of tokyo

Running paths and sports fields along both banks of the Tama River. On weekends the area is busy with sports teams, joggers, and walkers. The area is popular with picnickers during cherry blossom season. The path is a mix between pavement and gravel. You can start or stop wherever you like, but Tama Station is close to the river and a good place to start. Finishing at Futakotamagawa means that you can enjoy a coffee or a meal at shops near the station. If you run early in the morning on days with low humidity, you can see Mount Fuji. When the sun sets it’s possible to see the silhouette of the famous Japanese landmark. During this route, the public washrooms are only at the start and the end.

Start: Tama Station: Tamagawa Line, Toyoko Line End: Futakotamagawa: Den-en Toshi Line, Oimachi Line

Experience how the city fits together

Public transportation is fast and convenient, but as a result, many people only get to know the area surrounding the station. Running on the streets instead of taking the train or subway gives you a better sense of how the city fits together. Get a unique perspective on the city and have a great Tokyo running adventure!

10 Best Running Paths in Tokyo

The Best Spots for Running in Tokyo

Best Running Paths in Tokyo Feature

It is beginning to feel like autumn, and autumn in Tokyo is the perfect season for running outdoors. Tokyo is in many ways the perfect city for outdoor running, barring its intolerable summers. Though it is a metropolis on the largest scale, trails, parks, and green spaces are interspersed among its neighborhoods. Whether you are a longtime runner or someone who has just begun running, there is a nice path waiting for you. Let’s explore the best running paths that Tokyo has to offer!

1. Yoyogi Park

Yoyogi Koen

In his book The Way of the Runner , Adharanand Finn describes how elite Kenyan runners training in Japan often run in Yoyogi Park (代々木公園) at dawn. They like the soft dirt path around Yoyogi park because it is easier on the knees, and the terrain helps strengthen the ankles. The dirt path covers about a 3.2 km loop that is mostly flat. Yoyogi also has several paved routes that run in a shorter loop, including one with more elevation. Just remember to stay in the park itself, as neighboring Meiji Shrine is a sacred site, and therefore running (or other forms of exercise) is prohibited there.

2. Akasaka Palace

Akasaka Palace path

3. Komazawa Olympic Park

Komazawa Park Trail

4. Tama River Trail

Tama River Trail

The Tama River Trail (多摩川ジョギングコース) is located west of central Tokyo. The winding trail runs along the Tama River and is about 50 km/31 miles long, perfect for distance training. Most of it is paved, though some sections are gravel. The trail is shared with cyclists, so take care to look out for bicycles while running. Autumn is a good time to enjoy the changing foliage. In spring, this trail becomes popular for picnics and viewers of sakura blossoms along the route. This is one of the best distance running courses in Tokyo.

5. A Mid-Distance Run with the Best Historical Views: The Imperial Palace

Imperial Palace path

The Imperial Palace circuit (皇居ランニングコース) is 5 km or 3.1 miles long. This is my all-time favorite route because it is a moderate and thus versatile run in all ways except for its views, which are extraordinary. This route takes you around the Imperial Palace , with a magnificent view of the stately palace, its stone walls, surrounding moat, and verdant gardens. This view never gets old, no matter the weather: sun, rain, or snow. If you are visiting Tokyo, this is an iconic running tour. You can also take advantage of Runbase, a facility just three minutes away from the route. At Runbase, you can store your belongings in a locker, rent a pair of running shoes, and even take a shower. Perfect for runners on the go. This path is also a favorite of writer and runner Haruki Murakami.

6. Sumida River Trail

Sumida River Trail

Enjoy this riverside trail located in the Asakusa neighborhood, not far from Senso-ji Temple . This is a riverside route in the centrally located Asakusa area of Tokyo. The trail is 4.4 km/2.7 miles one-way and is one of the nicest running routes in Tokyo because it is a flat path, which makes for a relatively easy run. The trail is also pleasantly wide. This makes it one of the few places in the city where your dog can easily accompany you for a run. Just be careful they don’t overheat their little paws on warm days, as most of the path is concrete.

7. A Track in the City: The Meiji Jingu Gaien Circuit

Meiji Jingu

The Meiji Jingu Gaien (明治神宮外苑) is a lovely running course that runs right outside the Jingu Baseball Stadium. The sidewalk along this 1 km course is marked every 100 meters, which despite its short distance, is popular with runners of all calibers. There are no traffic lights, and the path is partially shaded by trees, including ginkgo trees. It is one of my favorites for an easy run or speed work because it is one of the few truly flat outdoor running routes in Tokyo. After your run, take a breather by the nearby National Stadium and take in all the commemorations of past and recent Olympics. This is another favorite of author Haruki Murakami, who lived in this neighborhood for some years.

8. Meguro River Trail

Meguro River Path

This is the perfect city run in the heart of Tokyo. The 3.5 km/2.2 mile trail runs along the Meguro River (目黒川) from Ikejiri-Ohashi Station to Meguro Station and winds through the Shinagawa, Setagaya, and Meguro wards. You can run it all at once or do a running tour with pit stops – after all, there is a lot to see and do. There are museums, parks, temples, and scenic bridges on the way. The path is lined with cherry blossoms in the springtime, making for an especially lovely run. Much of the Meguro River Trail is lined with lit lanterns at night, making it a nice place for a nighttime run as well. This is one of the best running spots in central Tokyo, but be aware that it is also popular with cyclists and walkers.

9. Mount Kumotori

Kumotori Trail

For a change of pace, this one is a trail run – and not just any trail, but a mountain trail. Mount Kumotori (雲取山) is located in Omatsuri, where the Tokyo, Saitama, and Yamanashi prefectures converge. At 2,017 meters, it is the tallest mountain in Tokyo. Despite its intimidating elevation, Mount Kumotori is a popular spot for running. This run is not for the faint of heart, but you will be rewarded by getting as close to nature as possible in Tokyo. Possible wildlife encounters include monkeys, deer, wild boar, and even bears (many Japanese wear a bell to warn off bears). The ascent and descent together are 21.2 km/13.2 miles, making for a challenging run on rugged terrain. Enjoy the journey more by taking a break in one of the huts along the ascending trail where you can eat a hot meal and take a bath.

10. Rinshi no Mori Park

Rinshi no Mori Park

For a less intense running experience, head to Rinshi-no-Mori park (林試の森公園) near Musashi Koyama Station. This is a public forest park in a quiet residential area. It is filled with lush trees and several trails that wind throughout the park. This is a beautiful running spot in any season, but perhaps particularly in the summer, when the trees can offer much-needed refuge from the hot sun. Although the distance around the park is only 1.6 km/1 mile, there are some hills for an added challenge. This running spot is ideal for a serene, low-key run.

I hope you found this article interesting and the information useful for your next run! If you choose one of the areas in the city center, be sure to stay on the left and run in a single file if running in a group – it can get crowded, especially on the weekends. I really enjoyed this sunshining day cycling around Tokyo! Unmissables spots, which could be difficult to find by yourself, it’s especically interesting for tourists like me who wouldn’t pay attention to so much things without a guide. The circuit by bicycle add more fun and keep you active unlike when you are on the bus! It’s a day I won’t forget, and definitely thanks to my great guide Yukiko!

Thank you very much for providing us such a good way to discover another Tokyo. We enjoyed the journey so much, and you are very kind to us. This cycling was a valuable experience and we will not forget all the wonderful moments. Tokyo is a great city which always gives me suprises everytime I visit. I am sure I will come again.

Likely the best value for any tour in Tokyo. This tour is very hands on and the tour guides are very informative. I would definitely recommend this tour to any friends traveling to Tokyo in the future.

This is the only kayak tour of Tokyo; you barely see any kayaks on the water. But what a great adventure! We saw industrial sections, including passing through a lock (wow!), crossing a busy and dynamic river, and passing under many, many cherry trees. I'm a birder and I had lots of ducks (which was nice). Great views of quiet neighborhoods and a truly unusual video of this exceptionally beautiful city. We had guides Masa and Carlos, and their English was superb and their knowledge delightful and detailed. What an amazing day. You must do this.

The Tokyo Great Kayaking Tour is such a special experience! Moving through the river under the sakura (cherry blossoms) is so beautiful. My family and I did it last year, this year and we will do it every year we are in Tokyo for Sakura season. Haruna and Hiro were excellent guides and we are grateful to them for making our tour such great fun!

We joined the 2 hour beginner kayaking tour and really enjoyed our experience. The hosts were really welcoming and friendly and this was something unique, active, fun and different to do in Tokyo. We look forward to another kayak trip or doing one of the other activities on offer, including the cycling tour. Recommended

We've been to Tokyo several times, but this was our first time doing a running tour and we absolutely loved it! Hide was a brilliant guide and showed us so many bits of Tokyo we had never seen before and we even ended up taking part in a community festival. We had so much fun and the beers afterwards tasted fantastic!

Sue was a great guide, I really enjoyed the long tour and great conversation. She adjusted the stops to my preferences. Great picture opportunities and lots of interesting knowledge. It was part for my marathon preparation. The big challenge was the heat of 35 degrees Celsius. But Sue was super well prepared and made sure we had enough cold water to drink, dehydration pills and cool down spray; stops in the shade or in climatized shops. I highly recommend!

My sister and I had a great time on our running tour. The route was excellent and a great way to see some hidden gems of Tokyo. The tour is suitable for runners of any level as the pace was a conversational level with frequent stops for pictures and to take in the many sights. Our guides were extremely welcoming and supplied us with water and popsicles during our hot 30 plus degree run. We highly recommend!

We are pleased to be appointed the exclusive tour operator in the U.S. and Canada for the 2024 Tokyo Marathon. The event has become the most popular running event in Japan, if not the world, with about 320,000 runners vying for an entry through the lottery. As an exclusive tour operator, we can offer a guaranteed entry when you book our package.

Running has always been a revered sport in Japan. Naoko Takahashi was the first woman to break the 2:20 barrier when she ran 2:19:46 in the 2001 Berlin Marathon. The country was known mostly for the Fukuoka Marathon and Osaka Ladies Marathon, which were created for elite athletes only. The Tokyo Marathon has embraced all runners in an attempt to become one of the world’s most popular international events. In 2012, it was selected as the sixth Abbott World Marathon Majors!

Everything about this experience was fabulous. Five-stars to Marathon Tours & Travel across the board.

As the non-runner of our group, I found the experience so amazing and memorable. Thank you so much Nicole and MTT staff for an outstanding job, making my husband’s dream of completing the six majors come true. It was an absolutely wonderful time and it was wonderful to meet up with other runners from previous excursions (London) here at Tokyo.

Nicole, as the coordinator for this trip was always fantastic. She responds quickly if you have concerns about the whole ordeal during the pre- trip and post- race. Well organized. I have used MTT since 2015 and they never fail from your expectations.

MTT staff are a treasure for those of us that have used them. I think that this is my 5th trip with your company and every one of them has exceeded my expectations!

Wow! Kyoto was an incredible highlight of the trip. Everything was fabulous! The hotel, food, tours and especially our tour guides.

Traveling with Marathon Tours & Travel is the way to go for international races. MTT provides a nice balance of scheduled events and free time. And everyone on the tour is either a runner or a family member/friend to a runner–everyone has similar interests and it makes it easy to connect and relate to each other.

Nicole was amazing throughout this looooong process from Tokyo 2020 to 2023. I personally ended up throwing some curveballs her way with flights and issues, and she handled them quickly and helpfully. I cannot say enough about how thankful I am to her and Marathon Tours & Travel.

Marathon Tours & Travel is the premier tours group in helping runners navigate the expo, start, and finish of a marathon along with touring the local sights and sounds of the host location.

My favorite thing about Marathon Tours is that you put the runners and their health, safety and comfort as your number one priorities!

This is just a quick note to remind you of the incredible services that each of you offer, and I myself have just been so thankful for all of you over these years. As a wife, mother, professional and runner you have brought such peace of mind to my life. I am so thankful to know that when it comes to the one activity of me that brings me joy, I know I can count on all of you for help when I want to do something adventurous!

Thank you for all that you do to make people’s dreams come true and support them even when they just have to wait a bit longer. In the end, Marathon Tours and their agents are always going to be ready and willing to make sure that each person gets the best of the best! I just wanted you to know that for some of us, our experiences with marathon tours holds deep meaning in our lives because of all the goodness you have contributed.

Was a little nervous traveling somewhere that English is not the primary language. MT had everything covered so it was not an issue. Fellow travelers, staff made this a wonderful experience. Extension to Kyoto gave me a better feel of Japan than being in the big city (Tokyo). Well worth the extra time and money. And who doesn’t like a trip with Jacqui on it??!!

I can’t thank the MTT staff and the Abbott people for the support, encouragement and recognition.

MT staff are helpful and made it such an easy trip. I appreciate the organization and that everything was taken care of. I think what I enjoyed the most was meeting other runners and making new friends that I hope to connect with on future trips and future races. The hotels were great with excellent locations too.

The volunteers on the race course were amazing. MTT staff were great too. I appreciated being with a group to take care of me, as I traveled by myself.

The extension to Kyoto was fabulous. The transfer to the train station and to Kyoto was very smoothly executed and I always felt like we were in good hands. Our guide – Harumi – was phenomenal – a true gem. She was so informational and really, really funny – she truly made the trip. I loved the itinerary and the various temples we saw.

I thought that Nicole and Jeff and the the entire Tokyo Marathon group did an excellent job in sending out an email and asking athletes for their questions on the trip and addressing it in the Conference call, and further following it up with an email so that everyone that missed the opportunity to participate that day and time still had the ability to benefit from it. It was very proactive and forward thinking. Kudos to you wonderful people!

I received my Six Star, so hard to beat the feeling of accomplishment. The comradery of the group, being so well taken care of/supported by the Marathon Tours staff and the Japanese people themselves… Are all tied for next best.

I love meeting fellow runners from the Marathon Tours group, great camaraderie, great stories, great fun! Insights on the course, start area, recognition of Seven Continents Club and AbbottWMM Six Star finishers, you truly feel like a community when you travel with Marathon Tours!

Every Marathon Tours trip is unique in its own way. The Park Hyatt was incredible as was having the chance to experience Tokyo in general. The post race gathering at the Park Hyatt was also outstanding. It was a wonderful experience.

Loved the tour activities: shrine & temples, tea ceremony, drumming ceremony, etc.

Meals were varied, interesting and so good!! Loved the bullet train. Thanks Nicole for getting us all there and on time! A stressful day, but well done. The shuttle to the airport at the conclusion of the tour was awesome, and so appreciated. Nicole told us to trust her… It will all work well, and it really did.

Communication with the Marathon Tours and Travel staff was excellent. Nicole was very responsive, and incredibly helpful. Her emails with trip details were thorough and easy to understand. I was nervous about traveling to a country that I didn’t speak the language, but felt much better with all of the detailed information that was provided.

One of the things I appreciate most is that Marathon Tours plans everything, all I have to do is show up. I love the people on this tour – staff and other travelers! How do you manage to put together such a nice group of people to travel with? I love how knowledgeable the staff is about the race and the destination.

8 Best Places to Run in Tokyo

Check out these great running routes in Japan's capital city

Kasia Szumna

Tokyo is one of the most populated cities in the world, full of busy streets and tall buildings. Although finding places to run can be challenging, fear not. There are many green areas where you can breathe fresh air and exercise. When you discover those great spots, you will see that running in Tokyo can be a lot of fun.

Be sure to check out our full feature on running in Japan as well as our updated top five running routes in Tokyo .

Meguro River

The run is about four kilometres long and crosses through three Tokyo wards – Shinagawa, Setagaya and Meguro. The path along the river is beautiful, especially in the spring, when it is full of cherry blossoms. The trees provide shade and cover from the rain too. The only discomfort is that in some areas there might be pedestrians and cyclists. That is why it is best to start your run early in the morning or late at night.

The river is accessible from Meguro, Ebisu, Gotanda, and Osaki Station.

Imperial Palace

Jogging along the 5 km loop around the imperial palace is a great way to combine sightseeing and exercise. The route is well marked, so you can track your time and distance. The good thing about the Imperial Palace gardens are facilities like lockers and changing spaces surrounding the area. The biggest disadvantage when jogging in the summer is heat. There is not much shade along the main jogging route here. Due to that, the best time for a run is before sunrise or after sunset.

Access Imperial Palace from Hibiya Station.

Yoyogi Park

The green heart of lively Tokyo and the best getaway from busy Shibuya and Shinjuku, just five minutes from Harajuku Station. It is Tokyo's largest park and open 24 hours. It offers stunning scenery and plenty of room for outdoor activities. On the weekends you can find interesting dance groups there, as well as artists, musicians and a lot of other events.

To get there, walk from Harajuku Station or Yoyogi Station.

Tamagawa River

Amazing place for a really long run (even up to 48 km). It is perfect for pushing your limits. The scenery is epic. There are no cars, so you can fully enjoy the open space and admire the river. It is great for cycling as well and accessible from the number of stations.

For more information about routes and directions see here . Closest stations: Futako-Tamagawa, Izumi-Tamagawa, Tamagawa.

Koganei Park

Beside the running course, Koganei Park has a wide range of features, including spacious grass areas, cherry tree garden, children's field, Japanese archery range, and 16 tennis courts. It also has all the necessary facilities to help you monitor your work out. The park even has a running club that might be of interest to local runners, which recommend a variety of Koganei Park running courses to try.

Stations: There are a few stations not so far from the park, but try taking a bus from Musashi-Koganei Station on the Chuo Line.

Arakawa River

Arakawa River is the place where the annual Tokyo triathlon competition takes place. It is a dreamland for runners and cyclists. The route is extra long, so you can probably run as far as you want. If you finish your jog in a completely different spot, do not worry, cause you can reach the river from many stations.

You can check an interesting work out plan including Arakawa river run here.

Stations: From the north you might reach via Ukimafunado, or from the south Nishi-Kasai, try also Kita-senju, Adachiodai, Akabane, Oji.

Komazawa Park

Komazawa Park is an excellent place to get in a short run around the loops or on the longer jogging course with helpful distance markers. It has plenty of other sport facilities too, if you feel like more training.

You can take a look at their official website here .

It is accessible from From Tokyo Station, Shinagawa Station, Shinjuku Station, Shibuya Station, Ikebukuro Station and Yokohama Station.

Akasaka Palace

The route is filled with changing views, from greenery to the ginkgo colonnade, to the Akasaka Palace (now "State Guesthouse") and Jingu baseball stadium.

This route might be helpful if you run there for the first time.

Stations: Yotsuya, Aoyama Icchome

Runbase Tokyo

Runbase Tokyo, by adidas, is a running station providing the perfect place from which to start your run. They provide changing facilities, over 150 rental lockers and 16 shower cubicles – those who are 'running' light can even borrow state-of-the-art adidas clothing and custom-fit shoes – and even buy them if they like.

Runbase Tokyo is based in the heart of Tokyo in the Nagatacho district, just 1 minute from Nagatacho station (Hanzomon, Namboku and Yurakucho Tokyo Metro lines). It's on the doorstep of the Imperial Palace loop running route – a great running course suited to all levels! Easy access from Nagatacho Station. Take Hirakawacho Exit number 4. Walk towards Hirakawacho Mori Tower and turn left.

Lace up and enjoy a beautiful 10k route through Tokyo with a local running guide.

Our ‘just run’ tours are light on the sightseeing and focus will instead be on a smooth running route with minimal interruptions from traffic lights etc yet still a good and interesting route.

A 10k run that ensures ‘no wrong turns’ and truly gives peace of mind. Where you as a runner do not have to worry about finding your way, getting lost or ending up in unwelcoming neighbourhoods. You will still get to have the local insights from your local guide in terms of modern life in Tokyo, the best coffee bars, local restaurants etc.

Please note – this is not a ‘training’ run so don’t expect hard intervals, tempo runs or burpees along the way while we stay on a specific pace with military precision.

In case you would like to run a certain pace, then please put this in the comments during checkout so that we can do our best to find a guide that fits your level. No promises – especially if you are crazy fast!

So let’s Go! and Just run.

Taylor Swift runs into Travis Kelce’s arms for post-Eras Tour kiss in Singapore

T aylor Swift was spotted running into Travis Kelce’s arms for a lengthy kiss after her Eras Tour concert in Singapore on Friday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, was seen waving the pop star, also 34, over after she wrapped her show from a backstage area in a video circulating on social media.

Swift was seen racing over to her boyfriend and leaping into his warm embrace as nearby Swifties cheered with delight.

The couple then shared a spontaneous smooch before the “Cruel Summer” singer pushed Kelce behind a curtain backstage so they could have more privacy.

Swift was still wearing a sparkly leotard getup from the final number of her show.

Earlier in the evening, the athlete was spotted singing and dancing along to Swift’s show from a VIP box with a group of friends.

Kelce was dressed casually in a white shirt and gray pants as he waved his arms to the beat of Swift’s hits like “Look What You Made Me Do” and “…Ready For It?”

The “Catching Kelce” alum was joined by his pals Ross Travis and Harry Clark, who were seen arriving in Singapore on Thursday night.

The couple’s reunion comes after the three-time Super Bowl champion spent some time in Philadelphia with his brother, Jason Kelce, following the latter’s retirement announcement Monday.

Travis shed tears over his brother’s exit from the NFL, telling Jason, 36, on their “New Heights podcast Wednesday, “To have you out of it, it feels empty.”

Last month, Travis showed his support for Swift by traveling to Sydney for the Australian leg of her blockbuster world tour.

He also attended one of her shows in Buenos Aires, Argentina , in November 2023.

Meanwhile, Swift did her best to be at Travis’ games through the season after they went public with their relationship in September 2023.

The “Maroon” singer even flew all the way from her concert in Tokyo to attend Kelce’s winning 2024 Super Bowl game against the San Fransisco 49ers last month.

The pair started secretly dating last summer , and a source told Page Six exclusively in January that Kelce is planning to propose to Swift this summer around their one-year anniversary.

(Tell Me Why) 'Tokyo Vice’ Keeps Referencing the Backstreet Boys

One of 'Tokyo Vice's best running gags has been its yakuza characters' obsession with a certain American boy band.

The Big Picture

  • Japan shines as the true star of Tokyo Vice offering viewers a nuanced and authentic look at its culture and quirks.
  • Jake, the "gaijin" protagonist, provides a unique perspective on Japanese society, guiding us through its high-stakes drama and everyday life.
  • The unexpected use of Backstreet Boys tunes adds a lighthearted charm to the show, showcasing a different side to the gritty yakuza gangsters.

The Backstreet Boys ' 90s hit "I Want It That Way" is one of those songs that just refuses to fade away from the pop-culture consciousness. It is constantly covered, parodied, and used as a soundtrack for films, TV shows, and video games. Not too long ago the song became a viral sensation, thanks to its appearance in one of Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s unforgettable cold opens . Most recently, the song popped up in HBO’s Tokyo Vice , a crime show that explores the dark, crime-ridden underbelly of Japan through the lens of an American journalist named Jake Adelstien ( Ansel Elgort ). You would think such a gritty setting wouldn't have called for a Backstreet Boys tune, but Tokyo Vice isn’t interested in giving us a standard, stereotypical look at Japan. It wants to show us a fleshed-out, complex version of Japan, one where Yakuza gangsters impersonate Neo ( Keanu Reeves ) from T he Matrix and vibe along to "I Want It That Way."

A Western journalist working for a publication in Tokyo takes on one of the city's most powerful crime bosses.

Japan Is the Main Character In 'Tokyo Vice'

Tokyo Vice's most interesting character isn't its protagonist or antagonist, but its environment — the palpitating neon-lit Japan of the late 90s . It’s a setting that feels real, like something you could step right into. Tokyo Vice’s Japan is incredibly nuanced and far removed from the sensational, stereotypical representation that most movies and shows lazily reach for. The show, much like its "gaijin" (the Japanese word for non-Eastern foreigner) protagonist, is engrossed by Japan. It glides through and observes Japan’s uncompromised politeness, unacknowledged hypocrisies, professional quid-pro-quo system, illusion of order atop rotting foundations, and so much more.

The show observes these idiosyncrasies with great curiosity, but it never dwells on them long enough to make any commentaries. Not that it wants to either. It simply wants to show the authentic Japan and allow its audience to be seduced by it. And there couldn’t have been a better protagonist than Elgort's Jake to achieve this effect. He isn’t a 10-day-tourist who’ll climb Mount Fuji and then head back home. Jake speaks fluent Japanese, has lived there for years, and writes for one of Japan’s biggest newspapers. But that still doesn't make him a native. His pale complexion and tall height sticks out, making him the obvious outsider. This places Jake at an interesting vantage point. He knows enough about the language and society to guide us into its depths, and he’s just "gaijin" enough to highlight the fascinating bits.

This doesn’t just mean the high-stakes, profound stuff, but also the minutiae of Japanese life and culture, such as the delightful depiction of Japan's love for Backstreet Boys, which has become a recurring joke on Tokyo Vice . Japan has always been obsessed with the Backstreet Boys, and this doesn't exclude their gritty gangsters. This odd combination makes for some awkwardly amusing moments. Most recently, in Season 2, Episode 3, when Sato and his fellow Yakuza members are letting loose in a karaoke club, one of the guys drunkenly — and quite passionately — belts out their 1997 hit "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)." But the most memorable usage of a Backstreet Boys tune came in the first season, which also proves to be the most wholesome moment of the show.

'Tokyo Vice' Season 2 Review: The Plot Thickens in Max's Slick Crime Thriller

'tokyo vice's "i want it that way" moment explained.

The most wholesome moment of Tokyo Vice appears in Season 1, Episode 4, when Jake and Sato ( Shô Kasamatsu ) are driving around in a car, and suddenly, Sato starts singing the Backstreet Boys' 1999 smash "I Want It That Way." Jake has a curiously amused reaction to this sight, one that's shared by the audience. Here's a tough, stoic Japanese gangster earnestly singing along and vibing to a boy band that isn’t known for being very masculine. Jake is incredulous and asks if Sato is seriously into Backstreet Boys. As it turns out ... yes! Sato considers Backstreet Boys to be the best band in the world , one that's obviously much, much better than NSYNC . And his rationale is that NSYNC could never have the guts to make a song about "a man and a woman doing that ."

Apparently, Sato has read the song's lyrics in a very sexual light, and no matter how hard Jake tries, Sato can't be convinced otherwise. In a later sequence, Jake asks his colleagues what they understand the song's lyrics to mean, and they're also quite confident that the song is about sex. We can hardly blame Sato and the rest for potentially misinterpreting the meaning of "I Want It That Way." Even for native English speakers, the lyrics are somewhat confusing. Fierce debates have raged over the meaning of the song and no one really seems to agree upon what "I Want It That Way" is supposed to mean. Even the band members have confessed that the song doesn't make much sense . That doesn't seem to matter to Sato and his yakuza brothers though. Confusing lyrics or no, they're all-in on Backstreet.

Tokyo Vice is available for streaming on Max in the U.S.

Sora Shirai doing a sugar cane at WST Dubai Street 2024.

World champion Shirai Sora cruised his way to the top of the men’s semifinal at skateboarding 's WST Dubai Street 2024 event on Sunday (10 March).

After yesterday's semifinal was postponed due to adverse weather conditions, it was decided the two-45-second run - best run counts - format would be used for the semifinal to allow time for the final also later today.

The 22-year-old Japanese skater put down a ‘safe’ first run to score 78.92 points before stuffing the second with upgrades including the ‘Sora' grind - alley-oop frontside 180 fakie 5-0 - to rocket up the leaderboard into first place with a 92.03.

Trailing Shirai was Slovakia’s Richard Tury (88.88), Portugal’s Gustavo Ribeiro (85.34) and Japanese world runner-up Netsuke Kairi (84.52).

Horigome Yuto was among those who were not able to advance to the final. The Olympic champion failed to put a clean run down on his first attempt and his second scored only 71.90, meaning he finished in ninth, missing the cut by 0.13 points.

Vincent Milou , who had topped both the open qualifier and quarterfinal, also failed to advance.
