Tested: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Red Devil Pro Touring

Mark Stielow took a '69 Camaro body and packed it full of modern-day performance. Behold Pro Touring's dry-aged wonder.

1969 red chevy camaro in front of burger joint

We’re visiting an odd spot in the universe where level-headed civility doesn’t pertain. This is a dream destination where the unlikely is the norm and the preposterous is the rule. Here, the ride of choice is a vintage Chevy Camaro packing Corvette ZR1 speed and handling.

True believers call this sect of the car faith Pro Touring (PT). On the sacred tree of motoring, the PT branch thrives several limbs up from hot rods and a couple over from restomods. The essential ingredients are outrageous power, 1.0-g cornering and braking capabilities, and stock sheetmetal. The “Red Devil” Camaro constructed by GM engineer Mark Stielow is a PT track star masquerading as a street-legal F-body.

In case your subscription to Car Craft has expired: The ’69 Camaro is now and forever the most cherished muscle car ever made. This model year’s combination of classic beauty, tidy size, and ample underhood space makes it a favorite starting point for tuners and collectors. GM vice-president of global design Ed Welburn not only owns one, he all but cloned the ’69 Camaro to renew Chevy’s fight with the immortal Ford Mustang.

The Red Devil is No. 11 in a series of  ’69 Camaros massaged by Stielow over the past 23 years. To the casual observer, it’s a survivor that rolled off a GM assembly line the year mankind made its giant leap to the moon. But don’t be fooled: This Camaro packs double the ammo provided by the General back in the day, along with the chassis fortifications needed to taunt the bluebloods from Stuttgart and Maranello.

Proving that he’s seriously hooked on speed, Stielow loaded the Devil’s engine bay with a sinful combination of LS7, LS9, and aftermarket power parts. His 7.0-liter Corvette Z06  block is topped with a ZR1’s cylinder heads, valvetrain, and supercharger. Inside, the best catalog parts money can buy are force-fed 12 psi of  boost by an Eaton TVS supercharger spinning 30 percent faster than stock.  A Tremec six-speed transmission sends an estimated 756 horsepower back to a 3.25:1, nine-inch solid axle fitted with a Truetrac limited-slip differential and located by a Detroit Speed suspension system. That same vendor also supplied the hydroformed subframe, the front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering  gear, and coil-over dampers fitted at all four corners.

Motor vehicle, Tire, Mode of transport, Automotive design, Vehicle, Car, Speedometer, Classic car, Alloy wheel, Gauge,

The surprise is how calmly the Red Devil behaves. The engine fires instantly and settles into a polite 750-rpm idle, temporarily suppressing its wild side. The clutch is light, progressive in its takeup, and easy to sync with the throttle for a composed creepaway. The pedals are ideally positioned for heel-and-toe footwork, and Stielow’s shifter knows the quick way  through the fortified T-56 gearbox.

To dial in the steering to his liking, Stielow trial-fitted three rack-and-pinion units before settling on one with low friction and decent feedback. A similar procedure was used for tires. Testing on a Michigan race circuit, he trimmed precious seconds of  lap time moving from BFGoodrich to Michelin radials before installing the final set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 rubber. These 18- and 19-inch run-flats team the standard Corvette Z06 sizes with next-generation construction.

Rick Foster’s Home Recipe for Building a Top-Notch Pro Touring 1969 Camaro

By Nick Licata – Photography by Wes Allison

“It all started with the magazines,” Rick Foster says about how he got into muscle cars. “Back in my high school days I used to get all the cool car mags. You know, Hot Rod, Car Craft, and Popular Hot Rodding; I’d read them all cover to cover. I couldn’t get enough. During some of my high school classes I used to hide the magazines inside my Pee-Chee folder (remember those?). All of us car guys did it. This was way before handheld video games or cell phones. Those magazines are what got us hooked on the whole muscle car thing and inspired us to wrench on our cars after school. And it helped living in NorCal back then as muscle cars were pretty much everywhere.”

pro tour 69 camaro

Over the years, Rick has owned several muscle cars. “I had two 1969 Camaros in high school,” Rick says. “That’s when I started wrenching, pulling engines, and having my first big-block machined and then assembling it myself. Later on I had a 1970 Chevelle and even a Mopar for a short time. That was followed by another 1969 Camaro and then I went the Pro Street route with a 1967 Camaro. It had a 540ci engine topped with an 8-71 blower. It was nasty.”

002-red-pro-touring-1969-camaro

With the Pro Touring movement piquing Rick’s interest, he sold the Pro Street 1967 and started the hunt for a new project–something he could start from scratch and build entirely with his own vision. Doing an online search, he came across this 1969 Camaro. It was basically a shell and came with only doors and a decklid but appeared to have very little rust. When he went to look at the car in person it was on a metal cart with no suspension, no engine, no interior, no nothing. Rick pulled the trigger. Rick got busy. He got dirty and he got challenged, but he remained determined. “I wanted to build a Pro Touring Camaro my way and with the best parts—something I could be proud of when this thing hits the road.” Rick says. “I replaced the floors, patched some small rust spots around the doors, windows, and dash. It was a lot of work, but I was all in.”

pro tour 69 camaro

It’s rare to come across a homebuilt car constructed to the magnitude of this stunning 1969 Camaro. Rick took the tried-and-true approach yet created a car well above the familiar sea of Pro Touring first-gen Camaros—red ones at that.

Just a few catchup items. My local car Audio shop said this stuff works very well under the headliner. Its nice and thick but lightweight and is layered with acoustic foam, foil material, and that sticky butyl rubber. With no AC and the planned satin black color I'm going to need all the help I can get. Installing the Quick Ratio 12.7:1 box was a royal pain. I know these old headers have seen better days but they fit OK before. Cant understand after all this time why no one makes a set of headers that fit perfect for these cars. I had to cut and add a new section to go around the new steering gear. No need trying to source new headers anyway when an engine change is a future possibility. Was a fair bit of work just for about 3/8" of clearance but did not want to do the ball peen hammer thing. Just gotta take it back out now and finish the welds. I know it looks like the cylinder#3 pipe hits the box but it clears by 1/4". Just a funky picture angle. You ever have those few body panel areas that are just gapped weird and makes you twitch when you look at them? Good old aftermarket sheet metal. Waiting on parts soooo........

I see now that the 600 series boxes are smaller which would of helped. I also saw that the Flowtechs are popular for their better clearances as well. Next time! The motor is how I want it for now so time for a little more fiberglass work: 3/4" scrap cut to the shape of the electric fan: Partial box together dimensioned as the radiator: Covered with tape ................. ....... three coats of wax to serve as the release agent: Polyester Fleece stretched tight, stapled and ready for resin: Fleece is thick so apply heavily: Remove carefully when fully cured: Start test fitting after some light sanding and trimming: Little filler, sand smooth, and prime for paint: Fun project and I think looks and may even perform better than the flat aluminum setups. We shall see.

Mentioned earlier that the upper hardware that comes with the Speedtech Chicane mount kit was undesirable. I'm sure its plenty strong but was able to find what I was wanting. If interested the part number is MS21250-38 and can be sourced at most aviation hardware companies. It's a 180 KSI, 200,000 PSI tensile strength bolt. Overkill? Well....yea.
So I had removed the torsion rods awhile back and this is my sad trunk prop rod. Either they were worn out or this aftermarket trunk lid is just too heavy for them. Is it me or are these trunk lids way heavier than they need to be? With the battery now in the trunk this just wont do anymore so time to get some functional bling. Installation was pretty simple but did need to make some shims to get the trunk lid height back to where it should be. Figure I'd use slices of carbon sheet to not add anymore weight to this heavy trunk lid. Problem is you just cant put those in the back and leave these up front. Problem solved but phew $$$$$$. The hood literally flies all the way open when unlatched! Wondering if the struts are just a bit too strong for this aftermarket steel cowl hood. It wont stay in any position once opened but all the way up. The back could definitely use something stronger like these. May see if I can swap those all out but I'm happy overall. Solid open and close with no wiggle now. Again, seems once you add a little bling it just grows from there. LOL. Had to splurge on these as well. Wheels are Boze ProTour wheels with 18X8 up front wrapped in 225/40 Pilot Sports (I saw that this is what most folks use), and 18X11 out back with 315/30s. Zak at Boze spent a while with me on the phone making sure the measurements were perfect. Good experience and learned a lot. Small body issues to clean up with exhaust fixes then rolling.
When you say "I'll just fix this one area", it just exposes more and more spots that need attention. Fixing that trunk lid gap grew into an entire blocking of the body. It did need it though but nothing more than skin coats here and there: So here we have it with what I call "stage 1" complete and a coat of hot rod black primer (for now). Take a stock 69 Base Camaro and install: mini-tubs, 4-link, coil-overs all the way around, big sway bar, tubular control arms (Improved caster/negative camber gain), fast ratio steering gear, Disc brakes with hydroboost, sub-frame connectors with solid body mounts, and finally wheels with soft rubber................ and what I got was a dramatically different and extremely fun driving vehicle. I'm sold. Nothing terrible to bolt-on with just a little welding. Time to enjoy this for the rest of the warm season and contemplate what "stage 2" will look like. Cheers!
