Is it better to book a cruise through a travel agent? We say yes

Fran Golden

Going online to book an airline ticket or hotel stay is a familiar and fairly easy transaction. When you book a cruise, however — particularly your first cruise — you might want to reconsider the impulse to handle the transaction yourself through a cruise line website or an online advertiser with cheap prices. This DIY approach might not be the best way to find your dream vacation at sea.

In reality, it's not that simple to book a cruise. You will likely run into a lot of questions to which you have no ready answer.

That's where specialized cruise travel agents come into play. Their expertise can help you avoid mistakes, whether you are a first-timer or a repeat cruiser checking out a brand you have not tried before.

Why you should book through a cruise travel agent

You should consider booking a cruise through a travel agent because a knowledgeable agent can help you understand the nuances of a cruise purchase and help you make the best decisions for your vacation preferences.

When you book a cruise, you are making a vacation decision that goes way beyond a flight or hotel nights. Which ship you choose determines your dining and evening entertainment choices for the duration of your vacation. Which itinerary you choose impacts which destinations you'll visit and which shoreside activities will be available to you. It can be overwhelming to evaluate the options on your own if you've never cruised before.

travel agent for cruise lines

In addition, cruise fares can be hard to understand and compare. You might, for instance, see a fare listed online without the port charges, taxes and fees, which you only see after you give your personal details.

Plus, the price of your cruise includes accommodations, meals, entertainment and activities — and in some cases drinks, tips, shore excursions, Wi-Fi and other extras. There's a lot bundled into some fares and not as much with others. A travel agent can help you determine what your cruise fare gets you. The cheapest base cruise fare does not always provide the best value or best overall vacation deal.

Related: 4 scenarios when you should use a travel agent

You aren't just booking general passage on a ship, either, as you will be asked to pick a specific cabin and when you prefer to dine. Making a mistake in these categories can ruin your cruise experience, as there are such thing as "bad" cabins and dining times (think noisy or claustrophobic cabins, dinner at 8 p.m. with cranky children, etc.).

With cruises, you typically don't pay for your whole vacation upfront but rather put down a deposit, with final payment due at a later date. A cruise travel agent can ensure you don't miss any due dates.

Remember, you might be a DIY type when booking airlines and hotels, but booking a cruise is more complex. If you enjoy doing your own research, focus on what to do and see in the ports of call. Read about different ships, cruise lines and itineraries. However, when it comes to booking the cruise, we recommend you still contact a travel agent who specializes in cruises to help you learn a few tips and avoid any rookie mistakes.

Travel agents can get better deals on cruises

If you're concerned that working with an agent will make your cruise more expensive, don't be. Cruise travel agents receive the bulk of their income via commission from the cruise lines. Their service to you is usually free, though some might charge first-time clients a minimal fee. It's worth it.

In addition to sharing their expertise, the agent may have negotiated group space at lower rates with the cruise line, which could save you money on the cruise fare. The agent might also have first access to sale prices because the cruise lines notify their agent partners and loyalty club members first before they announce a sale to the public.

Some cruise travel agents even throw in booking perks , such as a complimentary bottle of Champagne, awaiting your arrival in your cabin.

How to find a travel agent for a cruise

Cruise lines prefer that you use a travel agent rather than going online and booking directly. They have small in-house reservation teams, and when you have a question while making a booking, good luck in getting an expert on the phone in a timely manner.

Companies such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line provide online directories to help you find an experienced cruise travel agent near you.

travel agent for cruise lines

You can also find experienced and certified cruise travel agents through CLIA, the Cruise Lines International Association , which is the industry's main marketing group. Asking friends who have cruised to recommend a travel agent is another good idea.

Related: 5 unexpected places that sell cruises

You might get more personalized care from smaller agencies than from the huge online agencies, though websites such as icruise.com, Cruise.com and Cruise411.com also have experienced cruise agents. These larger online travel agencies can be a good option for those who prefer to make decisions and ask questions via chat. Just make sure you get the name and phone number of the representative for any follow-up questions.

Questions to ask a cruise travel agent

In choosing a cruise travel agent, you will want to tap into the person's specific expertise about the cruise line and ship you are considering. Anyone can read a ship deck plan outlining ship spaces (which you can find online), but you are looking for people who really know their stuff.

Look for travel agencies that are cruise-only or a home-based agent who specializes in cruises. If you are using a full-service travel agency, ask for the cruise desk.

Here are some questions to ask a travel agent to determine their expertise:

  • How often do you cruise?
  • Have you cruised on the line I am considering?
  • Have you cruised on the ship that I am considering, or do you have clients who have cruised that ship and provided a review of their vacation?
  • Do you have firsthand knowledge about the cruise destination? The itinerary?

You will also want to ask the travel agent if they have a preferred relationship or negotiated agreement with any specific lines that could lead to special perks for you.

Be aware that not all agents work with all cruise lines; some represent only a few preferred suppliers or specialize in higher-end cruises. They get bigger commissions from their preferred lines.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, but be aware if the agent seems to be putting you off the line you were originally considering, as this could be the reason. On the plus side, an agent who is a preferred supplier might have negotiated rates with the cruise line and be able to call in favors, such as that bottle of Champagne or a cabin upgrade .

travel agent for cruise lines

You should also ask if the travel agency offers 24/7 assistance (usually an 800 number) in case you have last-minute questions or something goes wrong before or during your trip.

The cruise travel agent should have questions for you as well, to better understand your dream vacation desires. If you are calling a cruise agency for the first time, the agent should be interviewing you as much as you are interviewing him or her. The agent should be focused on helping you choose the cruise line , ship and cabin that is right for you. Making the correct choices is very important to your overall cruise experience.

Bottom line

Booking a cruise is a complex enterprise. A cruise travel agent will guide you through choosing your cabin and dining times, deposits and final payment, and options for shore excursions and specialty dining. If you need to cancel the trip, the agent will also help you through the refund process. You'll have a lot less stress before and during your vacation if you book with an experienced agent.

Best Way to Book a Cruise: Travel Agent or Direct with the Cruise Line?

Best Way to Book a Cruise: Travel Agent or Direct with the Cruise Line?

Sharing is caring!

If you’re thinking of booking a cruise , you might be wondering if it’s better to book with a travel agent or directly with the cruise line? There are a few factors to consider, and questions to ask, before you decide.

In this post, we’ll go over the benefits of using a travel agent or cruise specialist, as well as the advantages of booking directly. When it comes to the best way to book a cruise, you may have wondered…

  • Why do people use travel agents to book a cruise?
  • Do travel agents get better deals on a cruise?
  • What questions should I ask the travel agent?
  • When is it better to book directly with the cruise line?

For most people, the benefits of using a travel agent experienced in selling cruises are well worth it. Travel agents will help you to choose a cruise, offer travel advice and answer questions, and can often find great cruise deals. Some may also provide an extra amenity, like an onboard cash credit or bottle of wine.

However, there are some instances when some people will prefer to book directly with the cruise line. We’ll go through when and why this makes sense. I’ll also go through some of the most important and frequently asked questions about booking a cruise.

How to Book a Cruise – Travel Agent or Direct with the Cruise Line?

Should you use a travel agent to book cruise or direct

If you’re a first time cruiser , the process of how to book a cruise might seem confusing. However, even for repeat cruisers, some of this information may be helpful as well.

You can book your cruise with a travel agency or directly through the cruise line. This can mean using a local travel agency or booking online through a cruise vacation website.

Travel agents who specialize in selling cruises, are often referred to as Cruise Specialists or Cruise Consultants. This is important, as you will want to use a travel agent who is knowledgeable and trained in selling cruises.

Which Travel Agents Sell Cruises (examples)

  • A local travel agency storefront
  • A large online booking website
  • Independent travel agents (who may work for cruise agency franchises)

When you do book online with a large website like Expedia Cruises or Vacations to Go, these are large travel agencies. In some cases, depending on the company, you can work with a specific cruise specialist for every cruise. For experienced cruisers, this can often be the best option.

Deposits and Final Payments

When you book a cruise several months or even a year or more in advance, cruise lines will ask for a deposit (which may or may not be refundable). The deposit secures your reservation until final payment. Cruise line final payment dates range from 120 days before your cruise, to 60 days before your cruise. Always check the cruise line confirmation and note the payment dates.

Should You Use a Travel Agent to Book a Cruise?

There are several benefits to using a travel agent to book your cruise. In fact, a majority of cruisers use a travel agent, whether a local agency or an online booking website, to book their cruise.

According to the Cruise Line International Association , when people did use a travel agent, they reported a high degree of satisfaction with the advice, knowledge and value received.

Benefits of Using a Travel Agent to Book Your Cruise

Is it Better to Book a Cruise with a Travel Agent

Experience and Advice

One of the biggest advantages of using a travel agent to book a cruise is getting great advice. A cruise specialist can guide you to the right cruise line and ship based on your vacation preferences and goals for the trip.

If you’re new to cruising, using a travel agent to book a cruise is a good idea. First time cruisers need to know about travel documents, online check in, cruise line gratuities , new health protocols and more. Having a travel agent to hold your hand and answer questions, right up to embarkation day , is very helpful.

Cruise specialists are also aware of more than one cruise line, and for avid or repeat cruisers, this can be especially useful. Our tastes change over time, and we get older. What we loved about the cruise line we sailed with when the kids were young , may not be the best fit years later.

Travel agents can bring our attention to other cruise lines and travel experiences , especially as you may want to plan some of those bucket list cruises.

Service and Convenience

Travel agents can take care of the booking and making payments, and even help with booking flights and pre and post cruise hotels . Of course, if you prefer to book online with an online travel agency website, that’s a convenience too.

This will come as a surprise to many, but when you book a cruise, the service of your travel agent is free. The price will not be higher than booking with the cruise line directly. Now this doesn’t mean they don’t get paid, but rather that the cruise line pays a commission to them directly.

There can be exceptions to this, as some travel agents may charge booking or administrative fees. They should let you know if this is the case.

What to Look for in a Cruise Travel Agent

Find a travel agent to book a cruise

I love travel agents. In my experience, they are passionate travelers themselves, and can offer excellent first person advice. However, when it comes to cruising, you need a travel agent that specializes in cruise travel.

Travel agents who specialize in selling cruises are often called Cruise Specialists or Cruise Consultants. They are usually passionate cruisers themselves who have a keen interest in learning about cruises and sharing that knowledge with their clients.

When looking for a travel agent, make sure this person is knowledgeable and trained in selling cruises. When booking with an Cruise Agency franchise like Cruise Planners or Expedia Cruises, this should be the case.

5 crucial questions to ask a travel agent when you book a cruise

Questions to Ask Your Travel Agent or Cruise Specialist

When you make a payment (deposit or final payment), does the travel agent pay the cruise line directly on your behalf.

It’s best to have the travel agent make the payment for you using your credit card, directly with the cruise line. This is safer than the travel agent taking your payment, and paying the cruise line themselves. Paying directly ensures that your payment is made to the cruise line, and is standard practice for most agencies.

You can also ask to receive the booking confirmation from the cruise line, showing payments, for your records.

Do you have a back up to contact if you’re on vacation or unavailable?

Travel agents go on cruises and travel. While this is great, who is available if you have a question or need assistance? Often, those working for larger agencies or franchises will have a main contact number if the need arises.

Will you monitor my cruise fare for price drops or should I contact you?

Did you know that many cruise lines will adjust your cruise fare if it drops before final payment? Often it needs to be on the same cabin category and it won’t be combinable with past promotions, but it’s always worth checking.

While many travel agents will try to keep an eye on price drops, the reality is it can be missed. It’s a good idea to keep track yourself as well.

Are there any fees I should be aware of?

Some travel agents charge an administrative fee, or even a cancellation fee. While booking the cruise may be free, booking a flight or hotel may have additional fees. It may still be worth their service, however if you’re keeping track of your cruise vacation budget , it’s good information to know.

Do Travel Agents Get Better Deals on a Cruise?

can a travel agent get a better deal

Travel agents may have access to better deals on cruises. In most cases, larger agencies or franchises have huge influence and buying power with the cruise line. This can mean better pricing on some cruises and/or some extra perks or amenities.

The Earlier the Better

Travel agencies often hold inventory on cruise ships that are likely to be popular with their clients. They reserve several cabins at the earliest and lowest rates, and can continue to sell them even as prices increase with the cruise line.

However, these cabins can be limited, and may not be available closer to sailing. Book 6 months to a year, or more, before your cruise for access to these special rates.

Extra Perks

Travel agencies that sell cruises may also have some perks if you book with them. This can include an onboard credit (can be used on drinks, excursions and more), a bottle of wine or a plate of chocolate covered strawberries,  and even travel points.

Suggested:   Cruise On Board Credits (OBC): How Can You Use Them?

Special Promotions

Another advantage of using a travel agent or cruise specialist, is being able to book when they have a special promotion with the cruise line. Agencies partner with cruise lines at certain times of the year and will offer a booking incentive, such as prepaid gratuities or specialty dining .

Is it Better to Book with a travel agent

How to Get the Best deal on a Cruise

The best ways to find deals on a cruise is to keep informed. Sign up for your favorite cruise line’s emails, as well as emails from travel agencies and online booking websites.  If you get too many emails, consider working with only your favorites.

If you’re happy with the service and value of a specific travel agent, keep in touch and let them know what cruises you’re considering even a year or two down the line. This way, when she sees a new promotion or great deal on a cruise, she can let you know.

Should You use a Travel agent to Book a Group Cruise?

If you’re planning a group cruise, using a travel agent will be enormously helpful.

Your cruise specialist will take care of everything you need, and manage all the reservations. If you’re planning a group cruise with friends or family (like a multi-generational cruise ), the travel agent will work with each party to make sure all their questions are answered. In addition, they’ll coordinate dining reservations and cabin locations.

If you’re the group leader, you can concentrate on the fun stuff, like matching t-shirts , and leave the boring details to your cruise consultant.

When Should You Book Directly with the Cruise Line?

Should you book a cruise direct with cruise line

If you know what cruise ship, itinerary and cabin you want, and prefer to do a lot of your own research, you may want to book directly with the cruise line. In addition, if you prefer to have control over all aspects of your cruise booking, and think you’ll be likely to make a lot of changes between placing a deposit, and sailing, booking direct will be most convenient.

When you book with a travel agent, they’re responsible for your booking, and all major changes need to be done through them. Things like changing cabins or requesting a price reduction, if the cost of your cruise drops before your final payment, will need to be done by your travel agent.

However, things that have to do with your own vacation planning are left up to you. As an example, reserving your shore excursions , making specialty dining reservations, and even booking your cruise line air flights are able to be done online, within your cruise reservation.

It’s worth giving this some consideration, as there are pros and cons to using a travel agent versus booking directly.

To recap, in this article we’ve gone through the benefits of booking with a travel agent for a cruise, as well the disadvantages. In addition, we’ve also gone through what to look for in a travel agent and what questions to ask.

When booking a cruise with a travel agent, there’s no additional cost, and it may be cheaper in some cases. You may even receive travel rewards or an onboard gift from your agent. If you’re a first time cruiser or booking a group cruise, booking with a travel agent is probably best.

However, the disadvantages of using a travel agent include not having control over all aspects of your booking. You’ll have to communicate with your cruise specialist for questions and changes you wish to make.

What is a cruise travel agent?

travel agent for cruise lines

Put simply, a cruise travel agent books cruises. As a cruise travel agent, you earn money by recommending and booking cruises for your clientele.

But you’re not limited to booking only cruises. The role of a cruise travel agent is really no different than the role of a travel advisor. As a travel advisor, you can book cruises, and you can also book hotels, tours and other travel experiences. (See more our guide on different types of bookings you can make as a travel advisor .) Consider cruises another offering in your travel advisor toolbox — and another way to earn more income.

What attributes make a good cruise travel agent?

travel agent for cruise lines

Fora Advisor Brit Healey

A good travel advisor possesses a unique blend of skills and qualities that enable them to provide exceptional service to their clients. Some of these attributes include:

A passion for travel

As a cruise-focused travel advisor, you’ll want to have a deep understanding of different cruise lines and travel trends so that you can make recommendations for your clients. If you already have a passion for travel (including personally going on a cruise experience yourself), then you’re well on your way. You can use your opinions from cruise travel experiences to form the foundation of cruise recommendations for clients.

Continuous learning and staying updated with travel trends and industry developments are crucial. At Fora, we offer travel agent training (more on that later).

Entrepreneurial spirit

Being a successful cruise travel advisor means you’ll put in a lot of hard work. Especially as you are getting started, there is a learning curve and it takes time to build your book of business. But it is a rewarding career in many ways, and your efforts will pay off as a small business owner.

Passionate people person

Working as a cruise travel agent is a great career option to connect with people.

You’ll want to get to know your client and their travel style, helping them to make informed decisions on which cruise line to choose and which itinerary they’ll enjoy the most. You’ll also help out with other travel decisions (for example, booking a hotel in the port city before they depart). You’ll need a strong focus on providing excellent customer service, including being responsive, patient and empathetic to clients' concerns and desires.

It’s also an opportunity to network within the travel industry. You’ll develop deep relationships with representatives from different cruise lines. We always say that travel people are the best people, and it's certainly a fun industry to be in.

Attention to detail

It goes without saying, but cruise travel agents are good planners. You’re the go-to person for travel tips, and you love match-making a client’s preferences to a detailed travel plan so that their vacation goes off without a hitch.

What are the steps to becoming a cruise travel agent?

travel agent for cruise lines

Working as a cruise travel agent is a great opportunity to transform your passion for travel into a fun and fulfilling career. It’s relatively straightforward to get started, and we’ve broken down the process into three main steps.

1. Find a host agency

The first thing you’ll likely want to do as you embark on your new career as a cruise travel agent is to find a host travel agency. A host agency is a business within the travel industry that provides support and resources to independent travel agents or small travel agencies. These services can include access to booking systems , travel partnerships , training , marketing tools , and sometimes even travel agent certification .

Fora is a host agency, and a one-stop shop for everything you need to set your business up as a cruise travel agent. When you join, you’ll be welcomed into a warm community (including a network of passionate cruisers). And we will set you up with all of the tech, tools and training you need to get started as a cruise travel agent.

2. Get certified with travel agent training

Once you join a host agency, you’ll want to get started with a training program. A solid training program helps you learn the in’s and out’s of booking cruises, as well as other useful topics like marketing (for example, how to utilize social media to build your business).

Our training is live and asynchronous so you can learn at your own pace. We offer webinars as well as opportunities to connect in person (including an annual conference ). These are not your traditional seminars; they are opportunities to connect directly and network with leading industry experts. You can get accredited as a travel agent through our travel agent certification program . And our training is not a “one and done” program. We offer advanced certification, as well as ongoing opportunities to stay in-the-know with the latest industry trends.

3. Book cruises (and repeat)

Once you’ve learned the ropes on booking from a training program, you’re ready to dive in (no pun intended) to booking cruises. We at Fora believe in learning by doing. To that end, the best way to learn how to become a cruise travel agent is to jump in.

As a cruise travel agent, you will earn money by booking cruises for your clients. You can choose a niche if you have a specific expertise, or focus on a broad range of offerings. (And remember, as a travel advisor, you can book more than just cruises if you’d like).

At Fora, we have partnerships with tried and true favorites like Royal Caribbean , as well as up and comers like Virgin Voyages . If you’re passionate about more eco-friendly cruises, you’ll be pleased to know that we also work closely with brands like HX/Hurtigruten as well as Lindblad Expeditions. For the luxury cruisers, we’re a Four Seasons Preferred partner, and we’re eagerly awaiting the soon-to-come launch of their yachts. This is just a sampling of our 4,500+ partners worldwide!

Once you have made your first booking, we're willing to bet you'll find that it's a little addicting. Start building your book of business by continuing to book cruises, and you're well on your way to a successful career as a travel agent.

What qualifications are needed to become a cruise travel agent? What degree do you need to become a cruise agent?

travel agent for cruise lines

Technically speaking, you do not need a degree or certification to become a cruise travel agent. It’s worth noting that many cruise travel agents opt to become certified through Cruise Lines International Association ( CLIA ); however, this step is not technically necessary. However, we highly recommend investing time into a training and certification program to set yourself up for success. At Fora, our training is flexible and you can do it remotely (and at your own pace) via webinars. Over time, your years of experience and hard work as an advisor will pay off in helping to establish yourself as a reputable cruise travel agent.

How much do cruise travel agents make on a cruise?

travel agent for cruise lines

There is no one-size-fits all solution on how much cruise travel agents make on a cruise because each cruise line is unique. However, we’ve broken down some of the basics so you can get a deeper sense of the payment structure for a cruise travel agent’s career.

Cruise travel agents earn money based on commissions.

When travel agents book a cruise vacation, the cruise line pays a commission — a percentage of the cost of the cruise vacation booked. And remember, this commission-based model is ideal for your clients, since they won't have to pay extra to enlist your expert services. Everybody wins!

The commission rate varies across the travel industry and between cruise lines (every brand is unique), but typically is anywhere between 15-25 percent. Your commission is split between you and the host agency. It's best to check with the cruise line directly to discover what their commission split looks like (or, at Fora, we showcase this information in an easy-to-view overview in your Fora Advisor Portal).

A career as a cruise travel agent is flexible, and the more you book, the more you earn.

You can work part-time or full-time. When you work with a host agency, you are an independent contractor, and this flexibility allows you to build a career on your own terms. You can be a home-based travel agent (learn more about how to become an independent travel agent ).

With a commission-based model, the more you book, the more you earn. You'll collect a larger chunk of commission if you book, say, a luxury travel, multi-family cruise vacation than you would for a couple's weekend anniversary trip. (Disney cruises are popular for families. Read more about how to become a Disney travel agent .)

Most cruise travel agents are paid by their host agency.

Remember, you’ll likely want a host agency to make the payment process easier. Host agencies have an IATA number (a unique identifier issued by the International Air Transport Association), which allows them to collect and make payments on commissions. At Fora, we handle all of the commission tracking and payments so you can focus more on the fun part (booking cruises, that is).

What types of cruises can agents book?

travel agent for cruise lines

The short answer is that the sky is the limit! Most cruise lines work off a commission-based model that is travel-agent-friendly. All major lines like Carnival Cruises, Disney, Viking, Norwegian, Celebrity, MSC, Virgin Voyages and more are commissionable. There are also luxury travel lines like Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and Crystal. Even smaller cruise companies like Ponant and Cunard work with travel agents.

You’ll be able to book a variety of cruise ships, and there’s a ton of opportunities to plan dream vacations for your clients. Whether you’re planning a cruise vacation out of Florida or Europe, there’s plenty of opportunity.

Norwegian Cruise Line Travel Agent Rates: Unlocking Exclusive Benefits for Travel Agents

Unlock exclusive benefits and competitive pricing with Norwegian Cruise Line’s travel agent rates. Discover how these rates can enhance the decision-making process for travel agents and provide added value to their clients.

As the travel industry continues to evolve, travel agents play a crucial role in helping clients navigate the vast array of options available. When it comes to recommending cruise lines, one name that stands out for its attractive offerings is Norwegian Cruise Line. Known for its exceptional service, diverse itineraries, and innovative ships, Norwegian Cruise Line has become a popular choice for both travelers and travel agents alike.

The Importance of Travel Agent Rates

In the highly competitive travel industry, securing the best rates for clients is paramount. This is where travel agent rates come into play. Travel agent rates are special discounted fares offered by cruise lines to qualified travel agents, allowing them to provide their clients with exceptional value and exclusive benefits.

By accessing travel agent rates, travel agents can offer their clients discounted fares, bonus commissions, and access to exclusive perks such as onboard credits, complimentary upgrades, and specialty dining experiences. These rates not only provide added value to clients but also allow travel agents to differentiate themselves from the competition.

The Decision-Making Process for Travel Agents

When recommending a cruise line to their clients, travel agents consider several factors. Pricing, itineraries, onboard amenities, and customer satisfaction are just a few aspects that influence their decision. However, travel agent rates can be a determining factor in the final choice.

By accessing travel agent rates, travel agents can offer their clients competitive pricing that may not be available to the general public. This can be a significant advantage, especially when clients are looking for the best value for their money. Additionally, the exclusive benefits and perks associated with travel agent rates can further sway the decision in favor of a particular cruise line.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Travel Agent Rates

Competitive pricing.

One of the primary reasons travel agents choose Norwegian Cruise Line is its competitive pricing structure. Norwegian Cruise Line offers attractive travel agent rates that allow agents to provide their clients with discounted fares, making their cruise vacations more affordable.

These discounted fares are particularly appealing to budget-conscious travelers who want to experience the luxury and amenities offered by Norwegian Cruise Line without breaking the bank. By leveraging these rates, travel agents can attract a wider range of clients and provide them with exceptional value.

Bonus Commissions

In addition to discounted fares, Norwegian Cruise Line also offers bonus commissions to travel agents who book their clients on their cruises. These bonus commissions provide an extra incentive for travel agents to recommend Norwegian Cruise Line and can significantly impact their bottom line.

With bonus commissions, travel agents can earn more money for each booking, allowing them to invest in their business, provide better service to their clients, and ultimately grow their client base. Norwegian Cruise Line’s generous bonus commission structure sets it apart from other cruise lines and makes it an attractive choice for travel agents.

Access to Exclusive Perks

Another advantage of Norwegian Cruise Line’s travel agent rates is the access to exclusive perks and benefits. These perks can include onboard credits, complimentary specialty dining experiences, spa treatments, and even priority embarkation and disembarkation.

By offering their clients these exclusive perks, travel agents can enhance their clients’ overall cruise experience and provide added value. Clients who book through a travel agent with access to these exclusive perks feel like they are receiving VIP treatment, which can lead to increased customer satisfaction and repeat business.

The Value of Travel Agents in Leveraging Travel Agent Rates

Travel agents play a vital role in helping clients navigate the complex world of travel. By leveraging travel agent rates offered by Norwegian Cruise Line, travel agents can provide their clients with unbeatable value and exclusive benefits that they may not be able to access on their own.

When clients book through a travel agent with access to travel agent rates, they can take advantage of discounted fares and exclusive perks, ultimately getting more for their money. This added value not only enhances their cruise experience but also builds trust and loyalty between the client and the travel agent.

Furthermore, travel agents bring their expertise and knowledge to the table, ensuring that clients make informed decisions and choose the cruise line and itinerary that best suits their needs and preferences. Travel agents can provide personalized recommendations, insider tips, and assistance with booking and planning, all while leveraging the benefits of travel agent rates.

In today’s digital age, where online booking platforms abound, the value of travel agents cannot be overstated. Travel agents offer a human touch, personalized service, and a wealth of industry knowledge that cannot be replicated by online platforms. By utilizing travel agent rates, travel agents can deliver exceptional value to their clients and reinforce the importance of their role in the travel booking process.

In Conclusion

Travel agent rates offered by Norwegian Cruise Line are a game-changer for travel agents looking to provide their clients with unbeatable value and exclusive benefits. With competitive pricing, bonus commissions, and access to exclusive perks, travel agents can leverage these rates to enhance their clients’ cruise experiences and differentiate themselves in the industry.

As the travel industry continues to evolve, travel agents remain a vital resource for clients seeking expert guidance and personalized service. By accessing travel agent rates, travel agents can offer their clients unparalleled value and ensure they have the best possible cruise vacation.

Lack of differentiation of river cruise products ‘damages whole industry’, says Uniworld MD

  • Share by email

River cruise lines must do more to differentiate their products when talking to the trade as agents are “unable” to place the right cruise with the right customer, according to Chris Townson, UK & Ireland managing director for Uniworld Boutique River Cruises.

Townson told  Travel Weekly the river cruise sector is lagging behind ocean cruise as agents do not understand the differences between the lines.

He said there is a “constant conversation” within the sector about the challenge of “over marketing” – where a large number of lines claim they sit in the luxury space – meaning both agents and customers believe all the lines offer the same standard of product.

More:  Uniworld to expand fleet with additional ship in 2026

He urged river cruise lines to be more open about their offering, saying: “There is a river cruise for everyone, be it two-star, three-star, four-star or five-star, but lines have to be honest about their product so they can get the right customers on board.”

“I feel sorry for agents because it’s impossible for them to know what is true if every operator tells them they are five-star,” he said.

“Ocean cruising is at a different stage. If you look back 15 years, ocean was a merge of products and there wasn’t much differentiation between them, but now when you talk to agents they know which are the luxury lines and which are mainstream.

“However, river cruise hasn’t moved forward as a sector and we all need to do more to raise awareness and give agents more support.”

Townson suggested a ratings system be employed, similar to that used by hotels, saying it would give “more clarity” on the different river cruise products available.

He warned the whole sector will suffer if lines are not more upfront about their offering and urged operators to be more transparent.

“Ultimately the wrong guest will end up on the wrong ship which is bad for the entire industry as the customer won’t then come back because they will feel they have been mis-sold,” he said.

“This is an ongoing challenge and debate and it’s why the partnership we have with our agents is so important because we need them to trust us to deliver them the right information so they can get more people on our ships in the long term.”

Middle East latest: 150 tonnes of UK aid enters Gaza; drone strike kills 'significant' Hamas operative

Around 150 tonnes of UK aid, including more than 13,000 blankets and 840 family-sized tents, entered the besieged territory on Wednesday, the Foreign Office says, as countries embark on a major humanitarian push to get supplies to starving Palestinians.

  • Israel using starvation as a weapon of war, EU official says
  • Dominic Waghorn: Failures of Israel and international community mean more innocents will starve to death

That's all for this evening - we'll be back with regular updates and analysis tomorrow.

Earlier today, the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA said an Israeli strike hit a food distribution centre in Rafah, killing a staff member and four others, while injuring 22 more.

Now Israel claims its airstrike in southern Gaza killed a Hamas commander, Mohammad Abu Hasna.

Israel said he provided intelligence to Hamas on Israeli troops' positions and was "involved in taking control of humanitarian aid and distributing it to Hamas".

The Hamas-run Gaza health authority said five people were killed, Mohammad Abdel-Halim Abu Hasna among them, but there was no immediate confirmation from Hamas that he was a member of the group.

In Washington, US secretary of state Antony Blinken said he had not yet received details of the incident but said Israel must protect the safety of humanitarian workers.

"You're in a war zone. You have a terrorist group that is firing from hospitals, from schools from apartment buildings, but the Israeli military, the Israeli government, have a responsibility and an obligation to do everything possible to ensure that the humanitarians can do their jobs," said Mr Blinken.

The Israeli military says it plans to move 1.4 million displaced Palestinians sheltering in Rafah to "humanitarian islands" in the centre of the territory.

Despite alarm from international allies, Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to launch an offensive in Rafah, saying four Hamas battalions were located there.

Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said civilians would be moved to the designated areas in coordination with international actors.

"We need to make sure that 1.4 million people or at least a significant amount of the 1.4 million will move. Where? To humanitarian islands that we will create with the international community," Mr Hagari told reporters.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said last month the organisation would not support any "forced displacement" of civilians from Rafah.

Mr Hagari said the "islands" would provide temporary housing, food, water and other necessities.

He did not say when Rafah's evacuation would occur, nor when the Rafah offensive would begin.

The timing would need to be coordinated with neighboring Egypt, he said.

The EU has called on Israel to open additional crossings to allow for more aid to reach Gaza.

"While supporting the Cyprus maritime corridor, we call on Israel to open additional crossings so more aid can reach Gaza, including the north, and to ease overall customs restrictions," EU commissioner for crisis management Janez Lenarcic said.

Meanwhile, the US secretary of state Antony Blinken said America wanted to see aid "flooding the zone".

It was working to coordinate a multinational effort to set up a maritime aid corridor into Gaza, he said.

Joe Biden last week announced plans for the US military to build a dock on Gaza's Mediterranean coast that will enable the distribution of up to two million meals a day.

"I want to emphasize it is a complement to, not a substitute for, other ways of getting humanitarian assistance into Gaza, and in particular overland routes remain the most critical way to get assistance in and then to people who need it," said Mr Blinken.

The US held secret talks with Iran to end Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, the Financial Times reports .

US and Iranian officials told the newspaper that indirect negotiations took place in Oman in January, where the US pressed Iran to use its influence over the Houthi movement.

Omani officials shuttled between representatives so they did not speak directly.

A second round of talks was scheduled last month, but the US became tied up in negotiations between Hamas and Israel, the FT reported US officials as saying.

Photographers on the ground in Gaza have captured images of families waiting for food aid in Rafah.

Children ate on the floor in the rubble of a building.

The photos come as aid agencies warn of the risk of famine in the territory, with World Health Organisation officials confirming children have begun to die of starvation.

South Africa's foreign minister says any of its citizens who fight in the Israeli armed forces or alongside them in Gaza will be arrested when they return home.

Naledi Pando also encouraged people to protest outside the embassies of what she called the "five primary supporters" of Israel's military actions.

She did not name them but may have been referring to the US and the UK, among others.

In December, the foreign ministry said it was concerned some of its citizens and residents had joined the IDF's military operation.

The ministry warned they could face prosecution if they hadn't been granted permission under South Africa's arms control laws.

Those with dual South African-Israeli citizenship could be stripped of their South African citizenship, the foreign ministry said.

South Africa has been a vocal critic of Israeli policy even before the war, comparing its treatment of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank with the oppression of non-whites in apartheid-era South Africa.

Israel denies South Africa's charge that it has enforced a form of apartheid on Palestinians.

The delivery of around 150 tonnes of UK aid to Gaza is "little more than a sticking plaster on a gaping wound," a charity has said.

ActionAid UK said "such a small delivery of aid will do practically nothing to avert the absolute humanitarian crisis facing millions of Palestinians" and called for an immediate ceasefire.

Earlier the Foreign Office announced a full field hospital had been sent from Manchester and would arrive later this week (see 14.13 post).

“Although we welcome the UK's delivery of aid into Gaza, particularly a much-needed maternity ward, it's clear that this announcement is little more than a sticking plaster on a gaping wound," Julia Rosell Jackson, senior humanitarian advocacy adviser on women's rights at the charity said.

"The delivery of over 3,000 period products to women and girls will provide small relief, but nearly 700,000 women and girls are unable to access sanitary pads, and many are resorting to using tent scraps as an unsafe and unhygienic alternative.

"When women are giving birth to stillborn babies as they are so severely malnourished amid an acute hunger crisis in northern Gaza and a total collapse of the healthcare system, such a small delivery of aid will do practically nothing to avert the absolute humanitarian crisis facing millions of Palestinians.

"A quarter of Gaza's population is at risk of famine so it's extremely disappointing to see that none of the aid mentioned involves food to stave off looming famine.

"With children dying of malnutrition, the foreign secretary's call for a pause will do nothing to deliver aid at the scale needed. As aid workers, we cannot provide effective relief whilst bombs rain down. It's time for these horrors to end - we need an immediate ceasefire now."

The father of an Israeli soldier killed during the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October has called for a hostage deal to ensure his son's body is returned home.

Itay Chen, 19, was serving as a soldier when Hamas carried out its surprise attack, sparking the now five-month war in Gaza.

The dual US citizen was believed to have been held hostage, but the military confirmed his death yesterday.

"We know that they were in some sort of a battle and we lost contact with him, or the army lost contact with him, after a few hours," Itay's father, Ruby Chen, said.

"The analysis after a couple of days was that he was kidnapped by Hamas. And he is still, as we speak, in Gaza.

"Even though we were given intelligence that provides an understanding that Itay is not alive, we still need a hostage deal, because that's the basic human requirement that I think any viewer can relate to, is that we want a funeral site."

Mr Chen said it "meant a lot to us" to have Joe Biden call the family and offer his condolences.

More than 130 Israeli hostages are still being held in Gaza, though some have been declared dead in absentia by the Israeli authorities.

Mr Chen appealed to Hamas to return his son, saying: "As a father, as a parent, you want to have your son back and be able to mourn for him.

"And I call to Hamas again - are you humans? Or do you wish to continue to cause suffering, just for the case of suffering?"

At least one staff member of the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA has been killed and another 22 injured in an Israeli strike on a food distribution centre in the city of Rafah in Gaza, the agency has said.

"Today’s attack on one of the very few remaining UNRWA distribution centres in the Gaza Strip comes as food supplies are running out, hunger is widespread and, in some areas, turning into famine," the head of the organisation said.

"Every day, we share the coordinates of all our facilities across the Gaza Strip with parties to the conflict. The Israeli army received the coordinates including of this facility yesterday."

At least 165 UNRWA team members have been killed since the Israel-Hamas war began, the agency said.

Mr Lazzarini added: "The United Nations, its personnel, premises and assets must be protected at all times.

"Since this war began, attacks against UN facilities, convoys and personnel have become commonplace in blatant disregard to international humanitarian law. I am calling once again for an independent inquiry into these violations and the need for accountability."
