WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO British-Isles Cruises Insider

Because of its island climate, the British Isles don't get quite as warm in the summer or quite as cold in the winter as elsewhere in Europe. People love to visit in the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn, when the weather is usually warm and dry.

Of course, British weather is known to be temperamental, and rain is frequent. Pack layers even if you're visiting in summer, as the evenings can get cool, and bring a waterproof jacket and outerwear regardless of the season.

You can find longer 12 night sailings around the British Isles from Amsterdam, Netherlands and shorter sampling sailings out of Southampton, England .

Tipping is not customary across the British Isles like it is elsewhere in Europe and in North America. Some restaurants do add a service charge to bills.

If driving in the British Isles, remember Ireland road signs are in kilometers, while Great Britain uses miles instead.

FOR FOODIE'S A CUISINE OF COMFORT

Each country in the British Isles is known for its signature pub grub and comfort food dishes. These hearty and predominantly meaty meals keep locals warm in a region known for its bracing weather.

Traditional Irish Stew for St. Patricks day

Stir the Pot

Made from slow-cooked meat — typically lamb or beef — and root vegetables such as potatoes, onions and carrots, a bowl of Irish stew with a side of crusty bread is only made better when washed down with a pint of Guinness.

Cote de Boeuf with Yorkshire Pudding

The Proof's in the Pudding

Typically served on Sundays, a traditional British roast usually includes roast beef, roast potatoes, a side of vegetables and Yorkshire pudding, a baked pudding often served with gravy. Head to a London pub to tuck into this English tradition.

British Fish and Chips

The O.G. Fish and Chips

Across the British Isles, you'll find thousands of restaurants and shops exclusively serving fish and chips, which first appeared in England in the 1860s. Flaky, tender white fish is deep-fried in a thin, crunchy layer of batter and served alongside thick-cut fried potatoes and "mushy" peas, as the locals call them, which are blended with cream or occasionally ultra-rich bone marrow.

Golf Cruises on Land – Single Destination Golf Trips

Over the last several years, many of our members have traveled for a week, played a selection of world-class golf courses, enjoyed the famous sightseeing, and done it all without changing hotels.

You might think of these single destination trips as a golf cruise on land.

Although Haversham & Baker does not offer traditional golf cruises, these Expeditions provide many of the same benefits of enjoying the game on the high seas.

They also offer some additional advantages not found with golf cruises.

But most importantly, they provide the same immersive and customized experience which our travelers have come to expect from an H&B Expedition.

“It was a great experience. Next time I plan to focus in a particular area where all courses are within 1 hour and where the group can stay at a single hotel.”

~Topper Mathews, Belle Meade Country Club

Advantages to Single Destination Golf Trips – Golf Cruises on Land

Play great courses twice.

For most golfers traveling across the pond, the aim is to squeeze as many bucket list courses as possible into the time allotted.

An understandable mindset, especially if it’s your first golf trip to Scotland or Ireland .

In contrast, many experienced golf travelers wisely plan a second round at the marquee course(s) on their itinerary.

They understand that links golf courses can be a bit fickle. Thanks to the unpredictable winds and weather, they rarely play the same from one day to the next.

If you happen to visit Royal Dornoch during a monsoon, you’re likely to walk away wondering why it’s one of the best golf courses in the world.

On the other hand, the group playing the next day in glorious sunshine may put their names on the waiting list for membership.

One of the key advantages of a single destination golf trip is you usually end up with extra time for another crack at the headliner.

And the second time might be the charm.

As the old saying goes, sometimes you need a vacation from your vacation.

During a golf trip across the pond, you’re likely to play more rounds in a week than you might in two or three months back home.

As a result, one of the most common pieces of advice from H&B travelers is to plan a day off the golf course.

By staying in a single destination, it’s easier for you and your travel companions to slow the pace.

Even if you don’t take a full day off of golf, you’re likely to end up with extra free time that would have otherwise been spent commuting to your next destination.

Time that can be spent reading on your balcony overlooking The Old Course at St. Andrews or recharging at the hotel spa, keeping your mind, body, and game sharp for the rounds ahead.

The best piece of advice is one that was not put together by us, but playing two rounds at RCD was the best choice we made. In addition, I think doing just 18 holes per day made for the perfect amount of down time and allowed for a leisurely departure each morning. Finally, choosing to not stay anywhere for less than 2 nights made it easy on the packing and allowed us to slightly settle in at each location.

Sightseeing

Although golf may be the main objective of the trip, any H&B traveler will tell you that their time off the course was just as valuable to the overall experience as their time on it.

We call that time the Good Life, and our commitment to the experience off the links has distinguished Haversham & Baker from other golf travel companies for decades.

By slowing the pace and staying in one destination, you’ll have more opportunities to immerse yourself with the local heritage and culture.

Perhaps you take in a personalized guided tour of The Highlands or enjoy a glamorous dinner aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia.

The enriching experiences off of the golf course are only limited by the hours in the day and your imagination.

Golf Cruises in Ireland

Repack Just Once

One of the great advantages to golf cruises is the ability to unpack the suitcase just once.

In contrast, most land based golf trips across the pond usually require at least one or two hotel changes.

With a single destination golf trip, the logistics are considerably easier.

Just like a golf cruise, you can unpack, settle in, and only pull out the suitcase when it’s time to head home.

Stop and Smell the Roses

One of the benefits of a single destination golf trip is the time and freedom to just see where the trip takes you.

Whether it’s a morning stroll through the St. Andrews cemetery , an extra round as the sun fades at Cruden Bay, or hours of celebratory pints on the patio at Old Head, how you spend your time on an H&B Expedition is entirely up to you.

Because you’re the Captain of this ship.

Best Destinations for Golf Cruises on Land

St. andrews.

If you want to play golf in Scotland without having to change hotels, St. Andrews is the place to do it.

The golf speaks for itself.

The Old Course, Carnoustie, and Kingsbarns belong on the bucket list of every golfer.

But it’s the range of lesser known golf courses near St. Andrews which truly sets it apart.

If they were anywhere else in the world, courses like Crail Golfing Society, Panmure, Dumbarnie Links, and Lundin Links would be the highlight of any trip.

In St. Andrews, they fill out a week-long golf trip in the role of understudy.

Although golf is the main attraction in town, there are an abundance of ways to enjoy the Good Life while in St. Andrews.

From strolls through the ancient cemetery and university quads, to tours of historic castles and the famous links, the heritage and culture of St. Andrews is found at every turn.

Another advantage to staying put in St. Andrews comes back to The Old Course…

If you’re planning to enter the daily ballot for The Old Course, the more chances you give yourself, the better.

Spending a week in St. Andrews versus just two or three days will certainly put the odds of crossing the Swilcan Bridge in your favor.

Old Course at St. Andrews Swilcan Bridge

The fact that a mention of Dublin brings thoughts of pints and Joshua Tree rather than golf says plenty about why it’s a great choice for a golf cruise on land.

There are enough great courses near Dublin to keep the golfer occupied for a week or better.

The options include a former Ryder Cup host and four hosts of the Irish Open, one of which is consistently ranked among the Top 100 golf courses in the world.

As one of the great cities of Europe, it’s the Good Life in Dublin which makes it a wise choice for a single destination golf trip.

Whether it’s touring the Guinness Storehouse, shopping on Grafton Street, or enjoying the legendary pubs, the sightseeing options in Dublin are almost endless.

And it can all be enjoyed without ever having to change hotels.

Portmarnock Golf Club

Edinburgh & East Lothian

The combination of outstanding links golf and the rich heritage at one of the world’s great cities, leads many H&B travelers to enjoy a single destination golf trip to Edinburgh.

Although St. Andrews is labeled “The Home of Golf,” the East Lothian region also has a fair claim to the title.

The headliner is Muirfield , home to The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and authors of the original rules of the game.

Nearby North Berwick, Gullane, and a variety of less heralded courses in East Lothian will provide plenty of additional options for golf.

Beyond the golf course, basing yourself in Edinburgh offers unmatched opportunities to enjoy the Good Life.

All of which makes Edinburgh the perfect choice for the golfer who wants to enjoy a trip across the pond but skip the hotel change.

Aerial Photo of Muirfield Scotland

The Highlands

Perhaps no other region is more suited for a golf cruise on land than The Highlands of Scotland.

The scenery is enchanting, the people are endearing, the golf is captivating, and the Good Life is enthralling.

Royal Dornoch, Castle Stuart, Brora, and Nairn belong on the must-play list of every golfer.

But it’s the Good Life that truly separates The Highlands from the rest of Scotland and beyond.

After a short drive through The Highlands, it’s easy to see why Mary Todd Lincoln once said that “Glorious Scotland has spoilt me for every other country.”

Royal Dornoch Scotland

England’s Golf Coast

You’ll notice that the destinations above all follow a similar pattern.

Each of these regions offers Golf and the Good Life in equal measure, making them an ideal choice for the golfer who wants to enjoy it all without changing hotels.

England’s Golf Coast is a little different.

While the region is heavy on the golf, tourists anticipating a week of sightseeing may come away a little underwhelmed.

For that reason, the region has never ranked high on our list for couples trips or other groups where touring is a high priority.

But for the ardent golfer, England’s Golf Coast is the ideal choice for a single destination golf trip, headlined by three members of The Open rota: Royal Birkdale, Royal Liverpool, and Royal Lytham & St. Annes.

Additional Destinations

Some twenty years have passed since the Good Friday Accord brought peace to the streets of Belfast. Since then, Belfast has transformed into one of the vibrant cities of Europe and become an ideal home base for a single destination golf trip.

From Belfast, you can play the likes of Royal County Down, Royal Portrush, Ardglass, Portstewart, and Castlerock.

After your round, Belfast offers an unmatched array of award-winning restaurants and lively pubs.

And then there are the famous sites of the city – such as the Titanic Belfast museum – all of which are best explored via a personal Black Cab tour.

The one downside to basing yourself in Belfast is the windshield time. All of the courses on your itinerary will require commuting an hour or so from your hotel in Belfast.

But the convenience of never changing hotels, plus the outstanding Good Life found in the city, more than offset having to spend a little extra time in the coach.

Golfers at Royal Portrush

London might be revered as one of the great cities of the world, but for golfers, His Majesty’s backyard is no less enticing.

For starters, the area is home to four members of the GOLF Top 100 Courses in the World list, more than any other region in Great Britain and Ireland.

On the outskirts of town in Surrey, the Old and New Courses at Sunningdale Golf Club are joined by Swinley Forest and St. George’s Hill with this illustrious ranking.

Thanks to the notorious and unpredictable traffic in London, we suggest skipping a stay in the city center in favor of basing yourself in Surrey.

From here, you’ll have easier access to the golf courses, and an array of famous sites like Windsor Castle, Hampton Court Palace, and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

To see the landmarks in London like Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and the British Museum, you’ll want to plan a day off the course for an excursion into the city.

Cruises to Ireland and Scotland

Fascinating history and pastoral landscapes await.

On a cruise to Ireland and Scotland, take in the wonderfully contrasting scenery, from Ireland’s lush, rolling countryside to Scotland’s much starker beauty, where mountains slope down to serene lochs, inlets from the sea carved by ancient glaciers.

This corner of Europe is packed with culture and history, both ancient and more recent. In Scotland, you’ll come across grand, turreted castles and atmospheric ruins, as well as cosmopolitan cities including Glasgow and Edinburgh, each with world-class art galleries. In Ireland, you’ll find history shaped by everything from the Vikings to the golden age of shipbuilding. Don’t forget those famously cozy pubs—the perfect setting for sampling a pint of Guinness.

Itineraries

Featured ports of call, belfast, ireland.

Dynamic Belfast, once famed as a community divided by “The Troubles”, has reinvented itself as a thriving, modern city with a bustling waterfront, grand Victorian and Edwardian architecture, and a lively pub scene. Take a city tour to see the vivid street art on the Peace Wall, and explore the superb Titanic Belfast to learn about the ill-fated liner. Or head to the Giant’s Causeway, an expanse of 40,000 basalt columns on the wild Atlantic coast, created by an ancient volcanic eruption.

Glasgow, Scotland

As well as being a center of imposing Victorian architecture, the buzzing university city of Glasgow is rich in culture, from the priceless art of Kelvingrove to the archaeological treasures of the Burrell Collection. Edinburgh is just over an hour away, and you’re also close to serene Loch Lomond and the forested mountains of the Trossachs National Park. The shopping in Glasgow is superb, whether you’re in the market for tartan, Scottish whisky and craft gin, or your own set of bagpipes.

Cork (Cobh), Ireland

Immerse yourself in the medieval history and Gothic architecture of enchanting Cork. Visit romantic Blarney Castle, a 15th-century fortress with beautiful gardens, and kiss the legendary Blarney Stone to be granted the “gift of the gab”. Sample the famed Jameson Irish Whiskey, shop for exquisite Waterford Crystal, and get a taste of life in Victorian times on a tour of the imposing Muckross House, located deep in the verdant countryside.

Conor Bradley stunner adds to Scotland’s woes as Andy Robertson goes off injured

Scotland are now without a win in seven matches, while victory was Northern Ireland’s first in Hampden Park in 50 years

Conor Bradley - Bradley scored a stunning goal to add to Steve Clarke's problems ahead of the looming Euros

A night to forget for one Liverpool full-back and a struggling Scotland proved very much one to savour for another of Jurgen Klopp’s defenders and Michael O’Neill’s young Northern Ireland side.

Andy Robertson lasted just 36 minutes before the Scotland captain limped off injured moments after seeing his Liverpool team-mate Conor Bradley score a fine goal that drained more life out of Scotland’s preparations for this summer’s Euros.

Any pleasure Klopp will have felt at watching Bradley’s first goal for his country secure Northern Ireland’s first win over Scotland for 41 years will have been offset by a worrying looking ankle injury to Robertson that could yet deal a blow to Liverpool’s title hopes.

🎙️ "Northern Ireland's boy wonder!" A terrific hit by Conor Bradley to score the opening goal against Scotland 🤯🟢 @ScotlandNT | @LFC pic.twitter.com/4p55gwoFW5 — Viaplay Sports UK (@ViaplaySportsUK) March 26, 2024

Robertson was caught on the left ankle during a challenge by Trai Hume on the half-hour mark and lasted just seven minutes longer before being withdrawn in visible discomfort.

“He’s just come off the pitch, let the injury take its course, he’ll go back to his club, they will assess it and hopefully it’s not too serious,” Clarke said.

Robertson’s early exit compounded a miserable night for Scotland, who are running into problems at precisely the wrong time with only 11 weeks to go before they kick-off the Euros against host nation Germany in Munich on June 14.

Andy Robertson

This was their fifth defeat in seven matches and they are now on their longest winless streak for 26 years, with all the momentum Clarke’s side had built up during a hugely impressive 21-match run up to last September gradually evaporating.

Clarke put on a brave face. “I’m not counting,” the Scotland manager said when asked about a winless run that now stretches back seven games to September. “The biggest thing for us is to be ready for June. I’d rather be sitting here in our position than Wales, who have unfortunately been knocked out on penalty kicks. It’s not all doom and gloom.”

Scotland hogged the ball but did precious little with it and looked short of ideas on how to break down an dogged, disciplined low block. They had 14 shots on the night but were pedestrian and one-paced going forward. Lewis Ferguson had a header tipped over and Lawrence Shankland a shot blocked from close range and that was about as good as it got. Northern Ireland, by contrast, were organised and counter-attacked well.

Their only shot on target yielded Bradley’s goal but Shea Charles should have doubled their advantage soon after when he shot wide from an inviting position.

It was a first half of starkly contrasting fortunes for two Liverpool full-backs, Robertson departing within minutes of Bradley scoring.

The previous time Robertson was injured on international duty he ended up being sidelined for three and a half months after dislocating a shoulder during a 2-0 defeat to Spain last October. Klopp, like Clarke, will hope Robertson’s latest setback is not nearly so serious ahead of Liverpool’s game against Brighton on Sunday.

This is a young Northern Ireland team that O’Neill is piecing together and there are no prizes for guessing who is the rising star among them. A right back for Liverpool, Bradley was deployed in a more advanced role as part of a four man midfield and revelled.

There had been little to recommend a drab, cagey game before the 20-year-old took matters into his own hands - and mercilessly punished errors from Nathan Patterson that encapsulated Scotland’s lacklustre night.

Having lost a 50-50 with Spencer to allow the Northern Ireland to surge down the left towards goal, Patterson appeared to have made amends with a good recovery challenge. But, from his own touchline, the Scotland wing back attempted a risky pass under pressure that was intercepted, allowing Bradley to collect the loose ball, drive inside and then rifle a shot into the top corner right with the help of a small nick off Jack Hendry.

“We played him higher up tonight, he’s normally a right back but he’s very adaptable because he’s so athletic and has real quality as well,” O’Neill said.

“He said after the game he found the position a little bit alien, a little tricky but I believe he can play there.

“Conor has that ability to have those little moments, you’ve seen that in those games he’s played for Liverpool. He had a crucial part to play in the goal in Bucharest and obviously got the goal tonight. He’s in a rich vein of form.”

The same cannot be said for Scotland. They have just two more friendlies to play, against Gibraltar and Finland, before taking on Germany and Clarke will need them to be a lot better than this.

The aurora borealis – better known as the northern lights – over the sky in Fairbanks, Alaska, in 2021.

Northern lights predicted in US and UK on Monday night in wake of solar storms

Spectacular aurora borealis caused by geomagnetic storms on sun’s surface may be visible in North America as far south as the midwest

  • Northern and southern lights: share your pictures

Solar eruptions are sending a stream of particles towards Earth, creating spectacular auroras in both hemispheres.

The aurora borealis – in the northern hemisphere – will be potentially visible on Monday night in the US as far south as the midwest. The northern lights, more commonly seen within the Arctic Circle, could also be visible in Scotland.

In the southern hemisphere, the aurora australis could be visible in southern Australia, from Victoria to Western Australia.

The shimmering spectacle comes on the same night as a penumbral lunar eclipse, which will be visible around the world.

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology’s space weather forecasting centre issued an aurora alert on Monday morning, saying a severe solar storm was in progress and the southern lights could be visible.

The storms are caused by coronal mass ejections, when clouds of plasma erupt from the sun’s outer atmosphere. Particles stream towards Earth, creating the spectacular display as they strike the Earth’s magnetic field.

In Australia, the storm peaked at 6 on the Kaus Index, a scale of one to eight measuring geomagnetic activity, meaning auroras will potentially be visible across Tasmania, along Victoria’s coastline and even on Western Australia’s south-west coast.

Both types of aurora are more commonly seen near the magnetic poles, in northern Canada and off the coast of Antarctica. Magnetic poles drift, and are not the same as the geographic poles.

The more severe the storm, the further away from the poles the auroras appear.

Severe storms can disrupt power networks and the satellites that provide navigation, surveillance and communication services. They can also pose a radiation risk to astronauts and people in high-flying aircraft.

A BoM spokesperson said significant space weather had “the potential to impact technology and critical infrastructure assets on Earth and in the near-Earth space environment”.

The BoM advises people hoping to see the aurora australis to find somewhere dark, like a beach or a hill with an unobstructed view south. Dark, moonless, cloudless skies away from city lights are ideal, and the best viewing time is between 10pm and 2am.

Last year, there were reports of shimmering night skies from Busselton in WA, to Ballarat and Canberra.

Macquarie University astronomer Dr Stuart Ryder said the 11-year solar cycle was likely nearing its peak this year.

“It goes from a relatively benign, calm state with very few sunspots on the surface to a very active phase about five or six years later, with a maximum number of sun spots,” he said.

“It’s much more likely to release huge flares of energy, enormous quantities of charged particles radiating away from the sun … their characteristic colours are green or red but people report blues, yellows, even purples.

“The more powerful the flare and the more it puts out, the greater the chance that people who live more towards the equator might get to see them.”

The BoM spokesperson said the current cycle began in 2019.

“The original prediction … was that solar maximum for this cycle would be reached in 2025, however, recent consensus amongst space weather researchers is that this cycle is likely to peak earlier, potentially in 2024,” the spokesperson said.

“This implies a higher level of solar activity over the next few years, but significant space weather can occur at other times in the cycle too.”

Meanwhile, at about 7pm tonight in Sydney and 7.30pm in Melbourne, the Earth’s shadow, or penumbra, will dim the moon.

The eclipse will be visible in spots including parts of Europe, North and South America, as well as parts of Asia and Africa. The details for people hoping to catch it are published on timeanddate.com .

Ryder said the eclipse will be half over by the time the moon clears the horizon. “Even when it does, the moon won’t pass through the deepest part of the Earth’s shadow,” he said. “It will be a full moon, and the upper part could appear a bit darker, because it’s deeper into the Earth’s shadow.

“Then the moon will move out of the shadow that it’s in and will be restored to full brightness … which unfortunately could ruin people’s chances of seeing the aurora.”
