Masskara Festival, the festival of smiles, is one of the biggest festivals in the Philippines, held every October in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. The term “Masskara” was coined from the words “mass” (crowd) and “kara” (face), which literally means “Festival of Many Faces”. During the celebration, Bacolod exude an enchanted atmosphere as masked dancers fill the streets, dancing to the tunes of live music, and many events are organized in the city.

Interestingly, Masskara Festival was founded sometime in 1980 and was first held back in October 19, 1980  to help ease the misery of the locals. A tragedy struck in the evening of April 22, 1980 when M/S Don Juan, a ferry carrying about 1,000 passengers, most of them are Negrense, collided with M/T Tacloban City tanker en route to Bacolod from Manila.  The ferry instantly sunk off shore Mindoro, killing about 750 passengers.

Near the man-made lagoon at the Capitol Grounds, you’ll notice striking statues painted in gold. The carabao (water buffalo) and a woman is attributed to Italian sculpture Frances Riccardo Monti, while the man riding a female carabao was made by Negrense artist Felix Garzon.

There’s also a memorial for the war veterans at the heart of the Capitol Ground.

4. VISIT SAN SEBASTIAN CHURCH

Why is a famous bacolod tourist spot.

The San Sebastian Cathedral in Bacolod city was originally constructed in 1825 and was renovated towards the end of the century. The 2 bell towers (the original wooden church has 1 bell tower only) were built in 1885 and eventually the bells were relocated to the churchyard for the preservation.  In 1933, San Sebastian Church was declared a cathedral when Bacolod was converted into a diocese.

5.TRY CANSI

Why is it one of the best Bacolod food?

Another must-try Negrense dish that you can find in Bacolod is the cansi (kansi), a traditional comfort food made of boiled bone-in beef shank with beef chunks and bone marrow and made sour by batuan fruit. The best place to eat cansi in Bacolod is at Sharyn’s Cansi House that is included in the World’s Top 50 Street Food Masters  chosen by panel of industry experts during the World Street Food Congress (WSFC).  The last time I ate here, the cansi served to me is good for 2-3 persons, about ₱290 ($6)  if I remember it correctly.

6. EXPERIENCE PIAYA MAKING

Piaya is a famous Negros delicacy that is made of flat unleavened bread filled with muscovado and glucose syrup.  It is believed that piaya was created to promote the sugar industry of Negros.

Bong bongs is one of the oldest bakers of piaya.  Most tourists who want to take home Bacolod and Negros local delicacies head to Bong Bongs.  But did you know that they also offer a workshop on how to make a piaya?  You can book in advance through their Facebook page to secure a slot, and it only costs  ₱60 per person (minimum 15 pax, maximum 50 pax).  The Bong Bongs piaya workshop is available from Mondays to Saturdays (closed on Sundays).

7. VISIT THE NEGROS MUSEUM

Why is it one of the famous bacolod tourist spots.

Originally built as a Provincial Agricultural Building, it now houses the Negros Museum that was founded in 1996. The Negros Museum is like a gate to the world of Negros, which aims to promote understanding of the history, culture, artistry, and life in Negros island.  Also, on display here are several artworks of local artists that are for sale.  Negros Museum also houses a Toy Gallery with toy collections from around the world including dolls of different sizes.

9. HAVE A SLICE OF CAKE AT CALEA

Why is it one of the top bacolod food.

Whenever I am in Bacolod, I always make it a point to drop by at Calea, a haven for cakes and pastries.  Calea is the most popular dessert café in Bacolod and it’s not surprising since they serve really delicious cakes. If you can’t decide what to eat, try their best-seller – the chocolate mud pie.  Calea also has a pretty nice ambience, perfect for sipping a cup of coffee while enjoying a bite of your favorite pastry.

10. CHECK OUT THE JOHN PAUL TOWER II

Why is it one of the top bacolod things to do.

Back in area in February 20, 1981, Pope John Paul II visited Bacolod City and celebrated a mass near BREDCO (Bacolod Real Estate Development Corporation), a reclamation area in the city. The John Paul II Tower is a pilgrimage center, erected near the aforementioned site to commemorate that important event. The soaring building dedicated to the late Pope John Paull II is composed of 8 floors and offers a great view of Bacolod City and Guimaras Strait. Displayed here are pictures, relics, and vestment he used during his visit.

11. DINE AT PALA-PALA MARKET

One of the best places to eat in Bacolod is the pala-pala style restaurant.  It’s their version of dampa, like the one in Manila, where customers can buy fresh seafood straight from the Pala- Pala Market and they can go to the nearest “tulahan” and they can cook the seafood for you. The price for the paluto depends on the cooking style and ingredients used.   Here’s the usual paluto:

•   Crabs – chili or steamed
• Shrimps –  buttered garlic, steamed, or chili (spicy-garlic)
• Squid – adobo, calamares
• Scallops – buttered garlic, grilled
• Fish – grilled, sizzling, soup

12. THE RUINS

Why is it one of the top places to see near bacolod.

Mention Bacolod and The Ruins will immediately come to mind.  But this famous attraction is actually located in Talisay, not Bacolod.

Based on anecdotes, The Ruins was built as a reminder of great love. Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, a sugar baron from Talisay, Negros Occidental fell in love with Maria Braga, a Portuguese from Macau.  They eventually got married, settled in Negros, and had 10 children. When Maria got pregnant with her 11 th child, she slipped in their bathroom and bled heavily. She couldn’t stand to go to the physician, so his husband had to request for a physician who lives in Silay.  It took 4 days for the physician to arrive by horse-drawn carriage and sadly, Maria and the child already passed away. Mariano was broken-hearted, he then decided to build an Italian-inspired mansion dedicated to his wife.  Unfortunately, during the World War II, the guerillas burned down the beautiful mansion to prevent the Japanese soldiers from using it as a military headquarters.   The frame of the mansion survived,  hence the name, like a testament of one great love that stood the test of time.

How to get to The Ruins:

1.Take the jeepney to Bata-Libertad (northbound, going to Bata). Fare is ₱8 ($0.16) per person.  You can find this jeepney along Lacson Street in Bacolod city.

2.Get off at Pepsi Plant (near Ceres North Terminal).

3.Take a tricycle to The Ruins. Fare is ₱50 ($1)  per person.

4.At the gate of The Ruins, pay the entrance fee.

Alternatively, you can also take a taxi to The Ruins from downtown Bacolod.

Going back to Bacolod from The Ruins:

Best to take the shuttle van that leaves every 30 mins – 1 hour. Fare is ₱50 ($1) person to Robinsons Bacolod and ₱70 ($1.38)  to Ayala Malls Capitol Central.

1.Take the tricycle back to Pepsi Plant. Fare is ₱50 ($1) per person.

2.Cross the high-way and tale the jeepney en route to Libertad. Fare is ₱8 ($0.16) per person.

13.CAMPUESTUHAN HIGHLANDS

Why is it one of the best places to visit near bacolod.

One of the popular resorts near Bacolod is Campuestuhan Highland Resort, situated in Talisay, Negros Occidental. This sprawling family-friendly resort was originally planned as a retirement home of Ricardo and Nina Tan, but upon seeing the majestic view surrounding it, they changed the plan to what is now known as Campuestuhan Highland Resort.  Aside from the swimming, the resort also offers various activities like zipline, hamster wheel, sky bicycle, rope course, and even horseback riding.  Kids will also enjoy Campuestuhan Highland Resort because of the life-size statues of superheroes here such as Batman, Icredible Hulk, Thor, and Superman.

14.mambukal resort, why is it one of the top things to see in bacolod.

To get a true taste of nature, head to Mambukal Resort, about an hour away by local bus from Bacolod City. Mambukal Resort is a timeless nature resort  covering roughly 23.6 hectares of land at the foot of the mighty Mt.Kanlaon in Murcia, Negros Occidental.  It is the gateway to Mt.Kanlaon via the Wasay Trail.

Interestingly, Mambukal Resort was originally conceptualized by Kokichi Paul Ishawata, a Japanese architect, in 1927. This is why this place houses a Japanese-inspired bath house and a picnic garden.

Mambukal Resort is sprinkled with nature springs, jungle-clad mountains, and waterfalls.  The resort may seem old and forgotten, but once you take a leisurely walk around its surroundings, you’ll most likely appreciate the forest surrounding it.

If you are adventurous enough, you can hike the 7 waterfalls inside the confines of Mambukal Resort.  But if you have limited time like us, you can rent a motorbike (with driver) to the jumping off point if the 1st and 2 nd waterfall. If I remember it correctly I think I paid  ₱50 one way.  Then at the start of the trail, you can hire a guide for your security and to avoid getting lost.   It’s an easy hike to reach the 1 st waterfall from the jumping off point, you can also do the 2 nd waterfall in Mambukal Resort.

How to get to Mambukal Resort:

1.From Bacolod City, ride a jeepney en route to Bata or Mandalagan or take a cab to Libertad Public Market.

2.Alight at Libertad Market.

3.Walk to Save More Libertad. In front of it is the Libertad Terminal.

4.Ride the double tier bus to Mambukal Resort. Fare is about ₱40 ($0.79) one-way and travel time is approximately 45 minutes.

Why is it one of the top things to do near Bacolod?

Silay City in Negros Occidental has a timeless appeal, once dubbed as the “Paris of Negros”, it takes pride as one of the largest sugar producers in the Philippines.  But what draws tourists here are the more or less 30 well-preserved age-old houses built during the Spanish colonial period declared as official heritage landmarks by the National Historical Commission.

16.lakawon island, why is it one of the top beaches near bacolod.

Lakawon Island is a pretty popular island and beach destination near Bacolod perfect for group and even solo travelers. It can be done as a day trip from Bacolod city, but to better enjoy its facilities and soak up the beach vibe here, best to stay overnight. 17.CARBIN REEF

Why is it one of the best beaches near bacolod.

Another rising beach destination accessible from Bacolod City is Carbin Reef.  It’s actually a napkin-shaped sandbar lapped by crystal clear denim blue water.   It has a powdery white sand peppered with makes-shift cottages. But its real gem is hidden underwater – a 200 hectare marine sanctuary, part of Sagay’s protected seascape.

18.ILAYA HIGHLAND RESORT

The newest attraction near Bacolod City is Ilaya Highland Resort, a Balinese-inspired resort perfect for family and friend bonding in Patag, Negros Occidental.  Visitors can do a day trip here and swim in its infinity pool while enjoying in the scenic view of the mountains and Panay Island.

19.CHURCH OF THE ANGRY CHRIST

Situated in Victorias City in Negros Occidental, the St. Joseph the Worker Chapel (Church of the Angry Christ) features unique artistry and imagery of Jesus and the saints. Constructed 5 years after the World War II, it is hailed an Important Cultural Property of the Philippines. The structural design of this distinctive church  was created by Czech architect Antonin Raymond, who made sure that the building can withstand earthquakes.

The Church of the Angry Christ is owned by the wealthy sugar baron family – Osssorio Family, that is why it is sitting inside the confines of a sugar milling complex.  What makes this church unique is the depiction of Jesus Christ, instead of showing a compassionate image, he is shown here as angry. The rare mural was created by a Filipino born-artist Alfonso Ossorio, known for his surrealist works.

Meanwhile, the beautiful mosaics inside the church are made by Belgian Adelaide de Bethune. The brass plates in the pulpit and the baptistry designed by Bethune was made by Arcadio Anore.  The Filipino-looking wooden sculptures of saints, Mary and Joseph, and the images of the Stations of the Cross were created by Benjamin Valenciano. Interestingly, the brown skin of the Filipinized version of the religious themes were made of glass from beer bottles.

How to get to the Angry Christ Church:

1.From Bacolod City, ride a bus to Manapla.

2.Alight at Victorias Milling Company in Victorias City.

3.Take a tricycle to the Saint Joseph Church inside the Victorias Milling Company.

Sipalay was once a local secret, but it’s slowly getting the attention that it deserves.  Getting here may be more than the adventure you bargained for, but it’s well worth it. BACOLOD | Travel Guide + Itinerary + Budget + Map

Bacolod, the City of Smiles. It is home to the Masskara Festival and unending lines of restaurants. One might even be tempted to consider it as the Food Trip Capital of the Philippines. To get a clearer overview of a trip to Bacolod City, one has to consider that the tour would not be limited to only the tourist spots in the city itself. The nearby cities of Talisay and Silay should also be included in the travel guide and itinerary and so is the much farther town of Murcia where the seven waterfalls of Mambukal National Park is located. My first trip to the province occurred in 2010 and I have since been back thrice after that.

► HOW TO GET TO BACOLOD

Bacolod is an hour away by plane from Manila and is served by an International Airport situated at Silay City. There are air-conditioned vans and taxis awaiting from the airport parking lot to downtown Bacolod. There is also a ferry service that regularly plies the Manila – Bacolod route.

It is generally quite easy to tour Bacolod on your own, DIY-style. But should you want a more convenient way of visiting the city’s tourist spots, there are a lot of tour companies offering city tours of Bacolod and its neighboring towns. I personally haven’t tried arranging for such, so I really can’t recommend any. For fairness’ sake, simply type “Bacolod Travel and Tours” in Google and choose which ones suit your budget and taste. Alternatively, you may check Bacolod’s local government listing here .

People in Bacolod and generally it’s neighboring municipalities use Hiligaynon or Ilonggo as their main language. It is the third most spoken language in the Philippines. There are those who are also fluent in Cebuano, but most can understand and speak Filipino and English.

Sir if I may suggest you might want to visit carbin reef and other sagay marine reserve that's in northern part of negos occidental as well as mambangon falls in las castellana that's in southern part naman. Masarap ung talaba sa Hinigaran still in southern part..

For a solo traveler, Dormitels has the cheapest accommodation. Php250 for a bunk bed. If you are traveling with a group, I suggest staying in family-owned lodging. They have rooms that can accommodate more than 5 persons for less than Php2000.

Sir, when you say Siquijor is one hour away by ferry, what do you mean? Is Siquijor one hour away from Bacolod by ferry? Or is it from Dumaguete? Dumaguete is 5-6 hours away by bus according to the post above. So in total, from Bacolod, it will need around 7 hours to go to Siquijor, tama po ba?

Hello, Sir. It's Noli again. I am just wondering if you can help me. How can one reserve a room in Mambukal? I noticed that they only have landlines in their Web site. I don't have means of contacting them through these landlines. I tried contacting their FB Page but they are not responding. I want to ask, what is the probability of an available room in their resort if we will reserve just one day ahead? Are they always fully booked? We're going there next week, specifically on December 9. If we can't reserve now, perhaps reservation will be the first thing that we will do when we arrive in Bacolod on the December 8. Hi there, doing a Bacolod-Dumaguete trip isn't really feasible if you're only staying for four days in Bacolod. The travel time from Bacolod to Dumaguete takes about five to six hours by bus or by car, one way.

Bacolod Travel Guide: How to Get to Bacolod from Manila?

To go to Bacolod, we traveled by plane from Manila (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) to Bacolod (Silay International Airport). The travel time takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. We left Manila at around 4 AM and arrived in Bacolod at 5 AM. 

We booked our flight with Philippine Airlines (PAL) for our flight to Bacolod then Cebu Pacific when we went back to Manila. 

You can also opt to travel by ferry. It’s cheaper but the travel time is about 20 hours which is not advisable if you’re trying to maximize your time. If you want some adventure you can buy a ticket from 2GO Travel , they’re the only ferry company that operates a Manila to Bacolod route, and they sail daily. 

On our way home, we traveled from Bacolod to Iloilo by ferry then from Iloilo to Manila by plane.

If you like seeing old buildings, then The Ruins is a must place to visit. Being a fan of history, I love going to places like this and I was really excited when we’re on our way here. The building’s structure is well-preserved and you can still see the beauty in it. The Ruins also has a beautiful wide garden where you can take a really good shot of the building.

2. Be a Kid Again at Campuestohan Highland Resort

One of the best things to do in Bacolod is to go here! Aside from swimming, visitors could enjoy the resort’s beautiful view, and you’ll see a lot of cool structures like dinosaurs. This is also the place where you can see cute hobbit-like houses. Due to its location that’s on a mountain, it gets very cold here, that’s why we didn’t get the chance to swim. This place is surely for people of all ages! I personally enjoyed our time here. Plus factor is the food in the restaurant inside which is super worth it!

To get closer to nature, Mambukal Mountain Resort is a must place to visit. This resort was developed by a Japanese Architect named Kokichi Paul Ishiwata in 1927 and was originally started as a bathhouse. You’d definitely enjoy your stay here. You can swim at the mountain’s private pool, do kayaking, and try its popular bathhouse that will relieve all your stress.

Ishiwata Bath House can be found within Mambukal Mountain Resort. Japanese Architect Kokichi Paul Ishiwata designed the bathhouse and still in use today. Japanese people believe that soaking in a hot bath not only provides cleansing and relaxation but can also improve blood circulation, reduce fatigue, and helps with shoulder stiffness. In this bathhouse, you’ll experience a very relaxing Japanese-style bathing.

Please take note that this is a DIY guide. In addition, we didn’t really plan our itinerary, all activities we did in Bacolod are on the spot decision. We didn’t book our accommodation in advance and we didn’t book a tour as well. During our trip what we did was used a google map, searched the internet, read blogs, and asked the locals in everything we need to know.

Bacolod Travel Guide – Day 1

Searched for Accommodation

On our first day, the first thing we did was searched for a place to stay in. As mentioned above, we didn’t book accommodation in advance. We just rode a jeepney, asked the driver to bring us to the plaza, which is the central part of Bacolod City. The locals also told us that the plaza is consists of plenty of hostels and hotels that we can choose from. Upon searching we decided to stay in Bacolod Pension Plaza. We’ll talk more about this accommodation below.

Buy Souvenirs

Since our accommodation is situated in a very convenient location, we are near SM Bacolod and public markets. We decided to do the opposite way of DIY traveling, we bought souvenirs on our first day. If you’re the type who likes buying a lot of souvenirs, this is not a good idea unless you have enough cash with you and you’re confident enough that your money can survive until your last day in Bacolod. We didn’t buy so many souvenirs so we’re fine.

Did Grocery Shopping

We decided to not spoil ourselves with foods (except Inasal of course, lol) so we did grocery shopping and bought canned goods, instant noodles, and some bread that we can eat.

Explore the Plaza

The Bacolod Public Plaza is a nice place to walk by and it looks wonderful especially at night with all the lightings. We roam around the plaza in the evening and took a lot of photos of the place.

Visit the 19th-century San Sebastian Cathedral

This cathedral is aesthetically beautiful. It’s located just beside the Bacolod Public Plaza and it literally stands out. If you love taking photos of old churches, this is a must-visit.

Our 2nd day is really the start of our trip to Bacolod.

We woke up early and prepared for a trip to Campuestohan Highland Resort. We asked the receptionist on how to go there from our place. They told us that there’s a van/shuttle available in the morning that travels to Campuestohan. We rode a jeepney first, for only about 5 minutes, we just told the jeepney driver that we’re heading to Campuestohan so we need to go to the van terminal (though it’s not really a terminal since it’s just located in front of a convenient store. Unfortunately, I forgot what convenient store was that). Just to be sure, and if you’re doing a DIY trip as well, asking locals is the best thing to do since the van pick-up point might change location.

The trip to Campuestohan costs around PHP 70.00 – PHP 150.00 ($1.39-$3) and the travel time is about 45 minutes. Upon reaching the resort, we were in awe. The place is big and really beautiful. The weather at that time was also cold since we visited Bacolod in January. From the resort, you can see a splendid view of almost half of the entire province of Negros Occidental.

This is also the place where you can see hobbit houses, enormous figures of dinosaurs, and popular superheroes that both kids and adults would enjoy. I personally love this place and wanted to go back to stay in any of the hobbit houses and dip in the pool. We weren’t able to do those since we only stayed in the resort for half a day and it was crazy cold so dipping in the pool is not a good idea at that time.

Relieve your stress and worries at the Mambukal Mountain Resort

One of the highlights of our Bacolod trip. Our trip to Mambukal Mountain Resort made us explore and appreciate more the beauty of nature. Here, you can find the popular Ishiwata Bath House and you can also try Kayaking, swimming in the resort’s private pool. My cousin enjoyed the hot spring so much. It was 40 degrees so I was only able to stay in the water for less than 15 minutes (lol, I know I’m weak). My cousin stayed for 30 minutes, took a break then went back in again. The hot spring literally cured our fatigue and we felt really fresh after. This is a must-try!

Inside the resort, we also tried Bacolod’s specialty which is the Inasal. It was absolutely good! I’ve tried Inasal a lot of times, but that one was the best! We stayed in Mambukal for the whole day.

Bacolod Travel Guide: Frequently Asked Questions ​

1. is bacolod a safe place to travel.

Definitely safe. During our stay in Bacolod, we always wander at night, exploring the plaza, visiting SM Bacolod on foot, buying street foods, and we didn’t feel threatened at all. We’re both women and we can say that the locals are really sweet and friendly. As I said, we didn’t plan our trip and we just relied on asking the locals, they are all willing to help us and give us tips and advice during our trip. They never fail to give us a bright smile whenever we asked for help. No wonder Bacolod was hailed as the City of Smiles. 🙂

2. When is the best time to visit?

We visited last January 2019. It was great since the weather is cold and not crowded at all. I remember when we were in Campuestohan, very few people were there. However, since it was cold, weren’t able to enjoy the pool. So I can say that between January to May is the best time to visit. March to May is the Philippines’ summer season so you’d totally enjoy your stay here during that time.

3. What language or dialect do they speak?

Hiligaynon or Ilonggo is the main language spoken in Bacolod, but most people can also speak and understand Tagalog. And of course, they can also communicate in English, you won’t have any problem traveling here.

PS. Their accent sounds so sweet that it’s really nice to hear. <3

4. Is it expensive?

For a DIY and unplanned trip, I can say that Bacolod is not an expensive place to travel to. I spent around PHP 10,000 ($200) for 4 days and 3 nights trip including accommodation, food, souvenirs, transportation, and other fees. Ferry and plane expenses are not yet included. We spent around PHP 3,000 ($60) for both ferry and plane tickets.

Please remember that you can spend less than PHP 10,000 in Bacolod. In our case, our flight ticket was not a promo ticket that’s why it’s a bit expensive (considering that it was really unplanned). You can buy a ticket for only PHP 1,000 if there’s a seat sale (watch out for that!). Also, our accommodation was a bit expensive too (my cousin was demanding regarding this matter! lol).

5. Where can we stay?

We stayed in Bacolod Pension Plaza. This place is really relaxing and worth it. The location is wonderful since the plaza is located just across the street. A few walks would bring you to the San Sebastian Cathedral and SM Bacolod. There are a lot of restaurants and fast food in the surrounding area. Public markets are also reachable on foot. And since it’s located in the Plaza, it serves as a good start in traveling to Bacolod’s popular tourist destinations.

Our accommodation costs PHP 1,200 ($23.87) per night . So a total of PHP 3,600 ($71.60) for 3 nights (no breakfast) . Our air-conditioned room was spacious, it has 2 single beds, a bathroom with hot shower, cabled tv, and wifi. You can also request for hot water for your coffee or instant noodles. Again, you can find cheaper accommodation if you want to, my cousin just wants a place with aircon and a hot shower, lol. It was also a bit expensive since we’re walk-in travelers.

Summary of our accommodation expense:

PHP 3,600 / 2 people = PHP 1,800 ($35.80) per person for 3 nights.

6. How to travel around Bacolod?

We usually use jeepney or bus to travel around. The tricycle is also good but it’s a bit pricey. When we went to Mambukal Mountain Resort, we rode a normal bus.

7. Any tips on how to save money for food?

In my case, I brought canned goods from Manila to Bacolod to save money. But of course, it was not enough, so we still bought some food in the supermarket like bread, instant noodles, and more canned products. For rice, we just buy rice at the carenderias near our accommodation which costs PHP 20.00 ($0.40) only. Sometimes, we also buy street foods. That’s for our breakfast and dinner, we usually eat out during lunch (since we’re on a trip at lunch). Overall, we just spent around PHP 700.00 ($13.92) for food.

BACOLOD-ILOILO-GUIMARAS: 5-Day Travel Guide, Budget + Itinerary (Updated)

Bacolod, Iloilo, and Guimaras are often referred by the Philippine travel community as BIG. Visiting all three nails down 3 provinces in an instant. But hey, who’s counting. After all, these three destinations have so much to offer. There’s Bacolod and the lovely smiles of its people and their sumptuous chicken inasal. Iloilo is rich in cultural and architectural landmarks. And there’s Guimaras and its mangoes, recognized as the sweetest in the world. When you only have five days and you are somewhere so promising, instinct would say to make the most out of it and that’s exactly what we did.

I know some people like taking things slow, savoring every moment without the need to rush. Others like doing things in a blur, covering a lot of stuff in just one go. It’s the same with traveling. Some people like visiting so many places within a span of 24 hours and there are those who spend a week or even a month in just one city. It’s just a matter of preference and a lot of times, circumstance. We cannot say that one is better than the other. If you would ask me, I tend to be both. If I have all the time in the world, I’d like to stay longer than a day or two in one place to learn and understand their culture better. Otherwise, I prefer being able to see everything I could with what so little time I have and this is what this 5-Day BIG Adventure is all about.

Day 1 – Garin Farm & Church Hopping In Iloilo

As a child, I heard so much about Iloilo from my stepmom who is a Hiligaynon. Stories of her running away from an aswang  (man-eating monster) when she was a young girl in their beautiful little village with an old church and enchanting white sand beach situated in the outskirts of Iloilo City filled most of my childhood. I got over the aswang part as I was growing up but the curiosity and fondness I have for their little village never fade away. So when I got my hands on a discounted airplane seat to Iloilo, I told myself I’m finally gonna see it and I’m not stopping whatever the odds were.

And there I was. Setting foot in Iloilo Airport, smiles all over my face. My excitement was growing by the minute although our first day started a bit slow with the rain stalling us from getting started with our tour. The plan was to visit Garin Farm in San Joachin and church hop from there all the way back to Jaro in Iloilo City. However, for this tour, it was unfortunate that we were only able to cover the gems of San Joachin. We had enough time even though our tour started late but the rain was everywhere that day. And it wasn’t just a drizzle but a downpour. As much as I love the rain, sadly, it always has its way of washing our plans away.

We stayed in Iloilo City for the night, chilling over beers, sisig and some great stand up comedy show. Although we were bound to Islas De Gigantes the next morning, we weren’t at all in a hurry. After all, vans going to Carles are available as early as 4AM and tours don’t start until 8AM. If you plan to do the same, below are some of the options where you can stay.

Day 2 – The Wonders Of Islas De Gigantes

Early the following morning, we were on our way to Carles. We rode a van at 4AM and arrived in Bancal Port in Carles at 7AM. We had an hour before the tour finally starts so after registering at the Tourism Office, off we went to find us some place to eat breakfast. Our tour was already arranged with Gigantes Island Travel and Tours  for our 2 days and a night stay for P1600/person that covers everything from tour, food, fees and accommodation so there was nothing more for us to worry about. Our only hope was Gigantes Islands would live up to our expectations.

At 8AM, we were directed to our boats along with the other travelers whom we were sharing the tour with. Our first stop was Pupandan Island. It was a small island of white sand and rough coral stones with a lone coconut tree that stood in the middle. I wouldn’t say that it was one of the best islands I’ve visited but it was charming and that was really enough. Next was Cabugao Gamay Island. This island embodies the whole of Gigantes Islands. It is its very face and I must say it live up to what I expected it to be. I didn’t expect for a powdery white sand beach as every well-traveled person would. We know that powdery white sands are rare and are hard to find so I, finding the beach of Cabugao Gamay with its sugary sand against my feet, was still so satisfying. And the scene at the view deck, it was similar to what we see in photos yet better.

After Cabugao Gamay, we went to Gigantes Sur where we rested a bit in our homestay. We had lunch shortly after and at 1PM, we resumed with our tour. The next stop was Puting Baybay Beach. It reminded me so much of El Nido and Coron due to the massive limestone walls against the fine white sands and clear turquoise water of its beach. Following that was Antonia Beach which caught me by surprise due to the abundance of life living under its waters. Our 2nd to the last stop was Bantigue Island that boasts of about a kilometer long of the sandbar which is just as great as the other sandbar islands I’ve visited. Everything was amazing that day. The only let down was Tangke Lagoon since the pool was dried up and was not suitable for dipping and cliff jumping. It was still perfect for snapping some photos though. Nevertheless, this day was never short of perfect.

Other than Gigantes Islands, there are other islands worth paying a visit near Carles. Concepcion has a lot of beautiful beaches and Sicogon Island is slowly gaining traction in the web so you might wanna consider visiting them. If you feel like staying longer in Carles after your visit in Islas De Gigantes, here are some places where you can stay.

Day 3 – Chicken Inasal & Relaxing Hotspring

Our third day was supposed to be spent discovering the other treasures of Gigantes but since our two companions were not up to exploring a cave and the northern islands where the lighthouse is were not accessible due to rough seas, we decided to head to Bacolod instead. At 7AM, after having eaten breakfast, we boarded the boat back to Bancal Port. There, our van awaited and quickly we were already on the road to Iloilo City. The trip lasted 3 hours and at exactly 12NN, we’re inside a ferry bound for Bacolod.

Finally arriving in Bacolod at 2PM, thirsty and starving amidst the scorching sun, our first stop was the famous Inasal Republic. It was such a relief that it is just about 10 minutes away from the port on a tricycle. The driver dropped us off in his go-to Inasal spot. Okay. I feel the need to tell you what or how exactly Inasal Republic looks like. It is a block of several Inasal Restaurants. Probably about 10 different restos all serving chicken inasal that you pretty much  don’t have any other choice other than Andok’s situated just across the road.

After a sumptuous lunch, off we went to Mambukal Resort where we will be spending the night. The plan was to just check in the resort, settle our stuff, get a quick shower and head back to the city to visit The Ruins which is best seen at night and the other landmarks Bacolod is known for. But then the rain came pouring down until the rest of the evening that we didn’t have a choice but to stay in Mambukal Resort and content ourselves with a relaxing dip at its hotspring pool before finally dozing off for the night.

***Notice that I haven’t included the cost of transfer from Iloilo to Bacolod as it varies from one shipping line to another. It also varies whether you are taking the cargo ferry or the fast craft but definitely the latter is more expensive but with so little difference when it comes to travel time.

If you plan to spend the night in the city instead of Mambukal Resort so you could explore the city more then here are some of your choices.

Day 4 – Exploring The 7 Falls & Lakawon Island

I didn’t come to appreciate Mambukal Resort until the morning. The cold breeze engulfing the lush forest of the resort and the serenity of the entire place was true heaven. I got to explore the resort on my own tracing my way from our villa to the river down to the boating area. The resort has a stench of sulfur but the natural beauty it possesses is unmatched. The chirping of the birds and the sound of crickets could be heard from everywhere. The continuous flow of the river was music to my ears. The towering trees were a promise of comfort and protection. The resort for me that morning was very calming and it made me to not wanna leave.

The plan was so unclear for this day. We couldn’t decide where to head next. Our choices were Campuestohan and Lakawon Island but we still have the 7 Falls on our plate. We decided to go see the 7 falls first then worry about our next stop later but after the first waterfall, the two companions we had decided trekking was not for them. As much as we wanna see the IG-worthy Campuestohan Resort, we knew to ourselves that we were more of island lifers hence the clear winner between the remaining two choices was Lakawon Island.

We headed to Lakawon Island despite the threat of oncoming rain. The boat ride going to the island was probably the most nerve-wracking during this entire trip. We were caught within heavy rain and gust in the middle of the sea that our boat almost capsized. We were greatly relieved to have reached the port unscathed. It could have ended tragically for four wandering souls who were just looking for adventure. The resort was not much to our taste though. It was overpriced even. Nevertheless, we still had us a wonderful time despite  the here and there drizzle.

It’s nice to stay in Lakawon Island but if you find the prices too much for your budget then here are other places you can stay at nearby.

Day 5 – Quick Visit To The Ruins & A Day Tour In Guimaras

Our flight back to Manila was at 10PM on our fifth day and we were flying from Roxas City. I know it’s too far out. If we had it our way, we would have a different itinerary and we would be visiting Islas De Gigantes last. But we adjusted so we could spend this trip with our friends who will be flying to Manila from Iloilo. So early morning, we departed Lakawon Island to pay The Ruins a quick visit.  After that, we quickly road a fastcraft going back to Iloilo and another boat to Guimaras. We really wanna see what this little island has in store for us. The islands around it look so promising but we had to pass on them for next time as we barely have the time.

Arriving at Guimaras, we headed right away to The Pitstop to grab a bite. We wanted so bad to get our hands on that mango pizza and I gotta say it didn’t disappoint. I’m no picky eater but I definitely know the difference between what’s good and not. Mango pizza tastes just as good as any other pizza except it has this creamy and cheesy taste to it. I could not remember the other dishes we ordered. All I could remember was that my palate was satisfied by just a slice of that mango pizza and the rest is history.

We have seen most of Guimaras but not all. I think there are still plenty to discover in that little island but it was what our limited time could only allow and that was good enough. I would certainly be back in this side of the country for more adventure but checking the time as it hit the hour of 5PM, we knew two crazy adventurers have to get their butts on the fastest bus to Roxas City if they wanna make it back to Manila on time, not missing their flight nor their jobs in the morning.

If you have more time in your hands, I would reco for you to give this charming island another day. If you need a place to spend the night, here are some of your best choices.

• All the destinations we’ve visited were amazing. I think my least favorite is Lakawon Island. It’s not the kind of place made for people on a tight budget and has limited time. If you would be doing your own BIG Adventure and you’d like to include some island lovin’ then stick to Islas De Gigantes and Guimaras.
• I highly recommend that you utilize Bacolod and Roxas Airports as your start and endpoints. This would allow you to be more spontaneous and will save you some hours from getting from one spot to the other.
• Western Visayas which include Bacolod, Iloilo, and Guimaras has equally distributed rain throughout the year but the best months to visit would still be from November to June. Avoid the rainy months to make the most out of your travel.
• Hiligaynon is widely spoken in these parts of the country but people do also understand and speak English and Tagalog.
• Transportation is easy. You could utilize passenger jeeps to get to places within the city and beyond. Cabs are available too. No TNVS i.e. GRAB car available yet.
• Bacolod, Iloilo, and Guimaras are generally peaceful and safe even in the late hours of the evening. Of course, caution still has to be observed especially against pickpockets and snatchers.
• If you are starting your BIG Adventure in Iloilo City, from Iloilo Airport, you can ride a van to downtown Iloilo for P50. They are usually parked just outside the airport and is really not hard to find.

Hi. I think the first thing you need to do is to know the health policies of these places. Whether they’re already open to tourists during your travel. Also know whether inter-island travel is possible since different towns/cities follow different protocols which depend on each Covid situation.

Hi Ann. If you arrive early on day1, I suggest you visit Islas De Gigantes first. Go for an overnight tour then go back to Bacolod after. If not, do a city tour in Bacolod then do the Gigantes the next day. 😊

Hi Danica I suggest that you do visit some spots on Iloilo and early the following morning travel to Gigantes Islands. Spend two days there then travel back to Iloilo and proceed to Guimaras or Bacolod .

Hi Shalee. I suggest you go the farthest first and nearest last for your itinerary. So if you plan to go to Gigantes, I suggest you do it on your first or 2nd day then work your way to the nearest sites

How To Get There

Getting to bacolod city by plane.

If you are getting to Bacolod by plane is a 45-minute plane ride away from the capital city of the Philippines, Manila. Once you get to  Bacolod-Silay Airport ,  you will then take a 20-minute shuttle or taxi ride that will take you to the heart of Bacolod.

Most of the tourists traveling to Bacolod come from  Iloilo City  and   Manila , but there are also plenty of foreign visitors in the city throughout the year. There are airlines like  Philippines Airlines  with flights from Manila, Davao and even from Clark (where we are based, in  Angeles City ) We bought a cheap airfare Clark-Bacolod City for  4000 PHP  the three of us with Philippine Airlines one way ticket. And also  Cebu Pacific Air  offers flights from those coming from Manila and Davao.

GETTING TO BACOLOD CITY FROM THE AIRPORT

If you are getting to Bacolod City from the airport. You should know that the airport is located in  Silay City , 15 kilometers far from Bacolod City. If you are riding a van will cost you  150 PHP  per person and it will drive you to SM which is in the city center of Bacolod.

There are also available Grab and taxis. Grab could be your best option if you are traveling with more people.  Grab  prices are around  350-500 PHP . Taxis are available for 450 PHP . Just choose the option which adapts better to your comfort and budget.

GETTING TO BACOLOD CITY BY FASTCRAFT FERRY FROM ILOILO

If you’re getting to Bacolod City from Iloilo. You can take a fastcraft ferry with regular schedules to and from both islands. The fees vary but the cheapest one you can get as a tourist is around  $4.50 USD  only. to  $6 USD  depending on the ferry company that you choose for your trip.

One of the many great things about traveling to Bacolod is how everything is really cheap and affordable! From the food and fares, this city’s affordability will keep your budget intact and will allow you to enjoy different things to do in Bacolod!

GETTING TO BACOLOD CITY FROM GUIMARAS ISLAND

If you are getting to Bacolod City from Guimaras Island. You have to ride a jeepney to Libertad Market from Central Market, the ride is 8.50 PHP per person. From Libertad Market you have to walk to SaveMore where jeepneys leave to Pulupandan. The journey takes almost an hour and it costs 30 PHP to the ferry port.

The ferry going to Sibunag in Guimaras leaves early morning before 8 am. The ferry going to San Lorenzo leaves at 11 am, so take note of the schedule since there is only one boat leaving daily. The boat takes an hour and it costs 100 PHP for an adult and 50 PHP for a 6 years old if you are traveling with a kid and we were doing going from Bacolod to Guimaras Island.

We had hard time riding this boat and the water was coming inside since it’s so windy getting to San Lorenzo in Guimaras Island. Maybe it’s better if you choose the other route coming from Iloilo City. Just expect a hard ride if you ride the boat. It’s limited to 55 people but they also add motorbikes, sacks and we think is overloaded based in what we saw apart of getting dizzy during the ride.

TRANSPORTATION AROUND BACOLOD CITY

Since Bacolod is a highly urbanized city, you can easily go from one place to another through  jeepneys, taxis, Grab taxi, tricycles, motorcycles and shuttle cars/buses . However, for first timers, riding a jeepney could get a little confusing because you would have to be familiar with the routes if you are to ride one.

But it sure sounds like an adventure, right? After all, the good thing about getting lost is meeting the friendliest people. The  Hiligaynons of Bacolod  will never hesitate to give you directions and talk to you if you need any help!

DAILY BUDGET TO VISIT BACOLOD CITY

Those visiting Bacolod City are in for a treat. Many of the food and hotels in the city are inexpensive but more than satisfying. A full meal in the city can go for as low as  80 PHP per person  while a bottle of  beer  can be bought for around  50-65 PHP .  Restaurant food  can be bought for around  500-800 PHP  for two people. Pretty cheap, right? And if you only have  20 PHP  in your pocket and you’re feeling pretty hungry,  you can even buy plenty of street food  with your cash.

Those who are looking for budget hotels in Bacolod and can find one on a promo for around  500-900 PHP . Three-star establishments go for around  1,000-2,000 PHP . That’s only  $19-38 USD ! Bacolod Itinerary

Day 1 bacolod itinerary.

From resorts to churches to old buildings, Bacolod City and its neighboring communities have so much to offer visitors.

For your first day in your itinerary in Bacolod we recommend you to go around the city. There are beautiful parks. You can visit San Sebastian Cathedral. And in the afternoon you can spend the day in the resort. We recommend you two options: Mambukal Resort in Murcia and Campuestohan Highland Resort. It will be great to spend the day with your family and friends.

At night for your first day in your Bacolod itinerary we recommend you to visit Manokan country. There are many dishes to try in Bacolod. Inasal chicken was our favorite one. But we also loved Cansi a tasty soup and oysters. For dessert and coffee you can visit Calea where you will find many cakes to choose from.

SEE SAN SEBASTIAN CATHEDRAL

Located in downtown Bacolod City, San Sebastian is a famous church all over the country. Many Filipinos visit this church to attend mass there at least once in their lives. What makes the cathedral so special, you ask? Its stone structure was officially built in 1876 and was made with coral stones from Guimaras and hardwood from Palawan. After almost a century, it has been renovated several times and has transformed to the architectural beauty it is today. The interiors can fill you with solemnity and awe at the same time.

HAVE AN ADVENTURE AT MAMBUKAL RESORT IN MURCIA

Located 1,200 meters above sea level, this mountain resort is a unique getaway that travelers from all over the world will surely enjoy. From trekking the 7 waterfalls to riding a zipline to wall climbing, Mambukal Resort has so many activities to offer! Campuestohan rests 800 meters above sea level and the weather there is comparable to the country’s coldest spots like Tagaytay and Baguio. There are many activities that you can try to keep yourself warm and occupied. There’s the hamster wheel, sky bicycle riding, a zip line, horse back riding, bungee trampoline, and many more! There’s also a spa and a restaurant pavilion for those who just want to chill and relax.

The resort has a  $12 USD  entrance fee and is open from 7 AM to 6 PM for those not staying in the resort’s cabins. Each activity also requires a small fee but the entrance fee already comes with access to the resort grounds, swimming pool, hanging bridge and playgrounds.

INASAL CHICKEN

Inasal  is Bacolod’s pride and joy, making it the #1 must-try food in the city. This unique version of charcoal grilled chicken originated in Bacolod and is cooked with a marinade of  calamansi , coconut vinegar, pepper and  annato . All these herbs and spices give  in asal  its unique flavor that people from all over the world fall in love with. Since Bacolod is  inasal ‘s hometown, there’s no better place to try it than here. Head on out to  Manokan Country , Bacolod’s street market that specializes in this delightful chicken dish. There are a few places where you can try chicken always full of people! For sure it’s the best place to go for dinner. Prices of orders are  around 100 PHP chicken and rice !

If you’ve ever heard of  bulalo , it would be easy enough for you to imagine what  cansi  is, the Ilonggo version of said Filipino dish. For those who think those two words sound made up,  bulalo  and  cansi  are basically dishes cooked with the same main ingredient: beef shank. However, the shank isn’t necessarily the highlight of  cansi . The star is actually the bone marrow, which can be eaten by using the wrong end of your spoon/fork to scoop the marrow from the bone. Even shaking the bone downwards to let the marrow fall out might do the trick! Prices for order is around  350 PHP  and it’s a complete soup full of meat that can be share for a few of you.

There are oysters available in Manokan Country apart from the popular Inasal Chicken. The prices is  60 PHP  for a dish and it’s quite big the order. So delicious for a cheap price!

Our favorite place for dessert and coffee. You can fine delicious cake for  100 PHP  and there are so many flavors to taste. Great place for a coffee, it’s located in the popular Lacson Street where you will find many restaurants around.

Day 2 Itinerary in Bacolod Talisay City

For the second day in your Bacolod itinerary. You can visit Silay just 30 minutes driving from Bacolod. Apart from the ruins you can go around the city visiting Balay Negrense, Bernardino Jalandoni Museum and San Diego Cathedral.

For snacks you have to try Ideal Bakery an ancestral house during the day. And for dinner there are more dishes to try in Bacolod like Kinilaw and Lumpiang.

MARVEL AT THE RUINS IN TALISAY CITY

The Ruins is an iconic destination in the region and the entire country as well. Recently, more people have come to visit this historic place because of its beauty. It’s truly an Instagram-worthy spot! Historically speaking, this Italianate mansion was created for Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson. It was his way of commemorating his Portuguese wife after she passed away from giving birth to their 11th child. Crazy, right? The Ruins sits on a 440-hectare sugar plantation owned by the aforementioned baron. It was eventually burnt down to prevent Japanese forces from using it as their headquarters during the Second World War. What stands today is what’s left of the building, which still looks beautiful and majestic despite it being “ruined.”

Now, it can be visited daily from 8 AM to 8 PM for an entrance fee of  less than 2 USD  per person. You can also hold special events in its gardens.

GO AROUND SILAY CITY

You can find Silay City in the North of Bacolod. Silay, so much as Bacolod, has a beautiful history and a rich culture. The city is filled with ancestral homes and mansions, old building and historical sites which makes it quite popular among tourists visiting Negros. The city’s vintage look reels in visitors who enjoy architecture and are interested in taking lots of beautiful photos.

There are many wonderful places to visit in Silay. The following spots are some of the closest ones to the city’s public plaza and can be easily explored by yourself or on a tour.

BALAY NEGRENSE  

Previously the mansion of sugar baron Victor Fernandez Gaston, this 19th-century building has been turned into a museum. It now houses beautiful pieces of furniture and has officially been declared a heritage house by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines in 1994. Locals and tourists love visiting this mansion because of its creepy vibe and the  wonderful story  behind it. It is also the first museum in Negros Occidental.

BERNARDINO JALANDONI MUSEUM

Famously known as the “Pink House,” this ancestral home has been a National Historical Landmark since 1993. It’s unique color and architecture attracts many visitors, all of whom give nothing but praise to the museum. Completed in 1908, the house is a beautiful combination of Silaynon architecture and European furnishing. Bernardino Jalandoni Museum showcases the richness of Philippine history and how great its foreign influences were as well.

SAN DIEGO PRO-CATHEDRAL

Easily distinguishable from all other churches in the province, San Diego Pro-Cathedral is the only church in Negros Occidental that has a dome. If you’re wondering what a pro-cathedral is, it’s basically a runner up to the existing cathedral in the province, the San Sebastian Cathedral. Though it ranks at second place in this respect, it is still a beautiful building that attracts many tourists. It was designed by an Italian architect and was built in 1925.

EL IDEAL BAKERY  

Another oldie but goldie in Negros is El Ideal Bakery. It is the oldest bakeshop and restaurant in the entire province, and is located in the  Cesar Lacson Locsin Ancestral House , another heritage site. Here, you can enjoy all kinds of meals served with bread or rice. Pastries and delicacies abound for tourists to enjoy; there’s  piaya , angel cookies and all sorts of pies. You will definitely want to eat your heart out in this local favorite.

This seafood fish famous all over the Philippines is said to be comparable to ceviche. In essence, though,  kinilaw  (literally “eaten raw”) refers to the process of using vinegar’s acidity to cook meat or fish. It is more commonly used with fish and is served with other souring ingredients like green mangoes. It is then seasoned with pepper, chili and onions. It does well as an appetizer but is more ideally served with beer as  pulutan  (finger food). With the abundance of fresh fish in Bacolod,  kinilaw  isn’t hard to find.

LUMPIANG BACOLOD

Also known as  lumpiang sariwa  or  lumpiang ubod , this delicacy is literally just fresh spring rolls and is abundant in Bacolod. Unlike the more typical preparation of spring rolls,  lumpiang bacolod  is not friend and is eaten with a soft wrapper, special peanut sauce and vegetables inside. This dish is pretty common all over the country and is a popular  merienda  or mid-day snack.

More Days Bacolod Itinerary

If you have more days in your itinerary in Bacolod you can relax outside the city visiting waterfalls just one hour outside the city.

After Bacolod you can continue the itinerary visiting Iloilo City one of our favorite ones. Just one hour by speed ferry. You can also visit Gigantes Island and Guimaras Island .

PULANG TUBIG WATERFALLS

Pulang Tubig  (literally “red water”) can be found in a protected area called the  Northern Negros Natural Park . The park is surrounded by lush forests and several river systems that make the area a tranquil sanctuary, perfect for those who want to be one with nature. To reach  Pulang Tubig , you need to go trekking from a lovely community called Patag, which is 20 minutes away from Silay City and about an hour-long ride from Bacolod City. Aside from the majestic waterfalls, the park is also home to native birds, deer, bats and different local plants.

2D/1N BACOLOD DIY GUIDE ITINERARY : A Short Trip to the City of Smiles

Bacolod DIY Guide Itinerary – It’s the beginning of a new year, and we’re pretty sure you’re up to something. Whether you’re up to taking care more of yourself by starting eating healthier food, getting back to the gym to keep in shape, picking up a useful skill, or a new hobby. As well as quitting some of your vices, start saving money, traveling the world, becoming more active and responsible, or  perhaps  just being positive, learning to smile often and just be contented with life.

Speaking of smiles, we visited Bacolod also known as the “ City of Smiles ” earlier in 2020. We were able to witness some of their popular tourist destinations, tasted their famous chicken inasal, traveled to Lakawon Island in Cadiz, and experience what it feels like to travel again to a new city because it’s been a while since our last travel. So if you’re planning to travel and explore the city anytime soon, here’s our Bacolod DIY guide itinerary that may help you in your future travel.

How do I get to Bacolod?

Bacolod is situated on the northwest coast of Negros Island, Philippines and if you’re visiting the city to celebrate the Masskara festival in October, witness the famous ancestral home mansion of Talisay at night – The Ruins or take a dip on the clear waters of Lakawon Island in Cadiz, etc. Traveling to the city of smiles is only about an hour plane ride from the capital city of the Philippines – Manila. Then from the airport, about a 15-30 minutes ride will be needed to get you to the heart of Bacolod. Regular/Grab taxis and vans (shuttle service) is just available in front of the airport’s arrival area.

For Van (shuttle service), the rate starts at 150/person, and from what has been told to us, drop-off will be in SM City Bacolod. While on regular/grab taxis, which we definitely recommend especially if you have lots of bags and luggage plus it will take you directly to your hotel, it will cost you around 250-600 pesos depending on whether they use the meter or not. 

In our case, we paid 500 pesos for a non-metered taxi for 2 adults (250 each) direct to our accommodation in  RedDoorz near New Government Center .

Private and Shared Bacolod-Silay International Airport (BCD) Transfers for Bacolod

Aside from Manila, local and foreign tourists in Bacolod also comes from Iloilo, Guimaras Island, Dumaguete, Davao, Clark, and Cebu (where we came from). You can refer here for Roro’s daily schedule if you’ll be coming from  Ilo-Ilo  or  Cebu  or check out domestic flights for daily schedules such as Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific. In our case, we bought our ticket via Cebu Pacific two months before our travel date for only 756 pesos (15USD) one-way.

If you’re on budget travel like us, choosing the best value for money in your Bacolod accommodation would be possible. In our case, we stayed for one night in RedDoorz near New Government Center (near Caltex – the Campuestohan bus pick-up) via Agoda App for only 700+ good for 2 people but the room can fit for 3 people. You can check the link above for your preferred Bacolod accommodation that fits your budget.

Travel tip: For convenience and to maximize your time in the city, when you book your hotel online ask them in advance if you can early check-in/late-checkout or at least leave your things for a while and if they have a charge for this.

06:00 am – ETA in the airport, Check-in: Hostel/Hotel, Breakfast, Leave luggage/bags 

Campuestohan Bus Pick-up/Drop-off in Caltex Government Center

08:00 am – Campuestohan Highland Resort Tour, Bus pick-up at NGC Caltex, Lunch

01:00 pm – Bantug Lake Ranch: Boating, Fishing, Horseback Riding, Swimming, etc.

Note if you’re commuting going Bantug Lake Ranch:  From Campuestohan Highland Resort going to Bantug Lake Ranch, simply take their bus transportation (Fare: 70/person) and just tell the driver to drop you off at Bantug Lake Ranch. Then after your activities and picture-taking, take a commute via tricycle ride just in front of the ranch (Tricycle Fare: 10/person) to Granada Terminal) and then from the terminal, regular jeepney going to the NGC are already available. 

03:30 pm – Back to the hotel for check-in, rest, change clothes, Snacks

05:00 pm – The Ruins, San Sebastian Cathedral, Bacolod Public Plaza/Negros Museum

07:30 pm – Dinner at Manokan Country, Buy souvenirs in SM City Bacolod, Back to Hotel

2D/1N Bacolod DIY Guide Itinerary: Other Friendly Tips and Information

* Both Lakawon Island and Campuestohan Highland resort have a restaurant serving lunch/snacks. But if you’re on a budget and doing DIY travel to Campuestohan or Lakawon just like us, it’s best to eat a full breakfast and just bring a few snacks and enough water for your day tour.  (In Campuestohan, guests are free to bring their food but in Lakawon they also allow guests to bring their food and drinks to the island, provided that you pay the corkage fee of P50. 00 per head.)

* Do not bring jewelry or other expensive accessories when you go swimming or just roaming around the city and always be mindful of your belongings. Better safe than sorry.

* Bring extra cash if you want to try rides such as zipline, sky bicycle, hamster wheel, etc. in Campuestohan Highland Resort.

* Though it’s a year-round travel destination, I would say the best time to visit the Bacolod is in summer (March-May) as its the perfect way to enjoy the beach as well as swimming/snorkeling or in October if you want to witness and be part of their biggest event of the city – Masskara Festival.  #ResponsibleTourism #LeaveOnlyFootprints

How many hours is the travel time from Cebu to Bacolod? 

The travel time from Cebu to Bacolod is 50 minutes by air, 6 hours by land, and 8 hours by RoRo. If you’ll ride a bus, the Cebu to Bacolod Ceres travel time is approximately 6 hours. Bacolod to Cebu travel time also takes less than 8 hours, depending on your chosen transport option.
