Van Brunt Visitors Center

  • About the Van Brunt Visitors Center

Winslow and Irene Van Brunt

Located at 313 No. 13th Street, the Van Brunt Visitors Center has served as the official "front door" for university visitors, alumni, guests and students since 2003.

Renting the Visitors Center

The Visitors Center is available for special event rental during weeknights and weekends. Contact Annette Wetzel, Director of the Visitors Center and Special Events, (402) 472-9800.

Formal announcement of Huskers move to the Big Ten.

Upon arrival, guests enter the great hall, which features 40-foot high ceilings and a warm living room atmosphere. A large video wall presents guests with current events on campus, academic videos, college and athletic highlights. Guests are greeted by friendly UNL admissions staff and are encouraged to visit the heart of the Visitors Center, the Information Resource Room.

Resource Room

The Information Resource Room provides an opportunity for visitors to discover and research information about the University of Nebraska-Lincoln at a leisurely pace. Printed brochures about admission to the University, academic colleges, special events, the city of Lincoln, the Alumni Association and athletic events are available at no cost in the Information Resource Room. Three computers are also available for guests to access the university's resources via the Internet.

In addition to the Information Resource Room, the Visitors Center also houses a warm and inviting conference room for VIP campus guests. The conference room is affectionately dubbed the "Red Room" by staff because of the red walls and red leather couch, housed in a room full of windows overlooking the Sheldon Museum of Art sculpture "Torn Notebook." The Red Room also offers a vista of the Lied Center for Performing Arts and views of downtown Lincoln.

Presentation Room

The Presentation Room in the Van Brunt Visitors Center is used by the Office of Admissions to greet potential students and their families. Equipped with a smart podium, exceptional sound quality, projector and screen, the Presentation Room provides a unique experience for 70 guests.

The Van Brunt Visitors Center is named after Winslow and Irene Van Brunt, 1924 alums of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Winslow earned his degree in Civil Engineering and Irene earned a degree from the College of Arts & Sciences.

The Van Brunts lived in Omaha almost the entirety of their 57 years of marriage. Winslow was an insurance executive with the New England Life Insurance Co. Irene was a dedicated community volunteer, active in women's organizations and church activities. Both served the Nebraska Alumni Association in a variety of capacities as board members. Winslow was national president of the association in 1965.

Ribbon Cutting

Official ribbon cutting, 2003, at Van Brunt Visitors Center.

Honoring family, supporting UNL

Winslow and Irene shared a deep devotion to the university and a commitment to education. Alice and Robert Williamson of Omaha and Beth and Harry Weigel of California were very generous to offer funding support for the Visitors Center in honor of their parents Winslow and Irene Van Brunt.

Daughters Alice and Beth remember their parents as exceptionally warm and outgoing people. The visitors center project was a perfect way to honor them. Alice Williamson said, "My parents loved to meet new people and they loved to make people feel welcome."

With this legacy gift, the Van Brunts will help thousands of visitors to the university feel welcome and at home. The building's open design enables staff to give personal attention to each person who walks through these doors.

Amit Jhala speaks to attendees while standing in field

Growers, crop consultants and educators are encouraged to attend Nebraska Extension's Weed Management Field Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at the South Central Agricultural Laboratory near Clay Center.

The field day will include on-site demonstrations of new technology and new herbicides for corn, soybean and sorghum. An early morning tour will focus on weed management in soybean and sorghum followed by a tour of weed management in field corn. Field experiments will provide information for weed control options with various herbicide programs.

Attending this field day will provide an opportunity to stakeholders to learn about management of herbicide-resistant weeds.

Three certified crop advisor (CCA) continuing education units are available in the integrated pest management category.

There is no cost to attend the field day, but participants are asked to pre-register online .

The South Central Agricultural Laboratory is five miles west of the intersection of Highways 14 and 6, or 13 miles east of Hastings on Highway 6. GPS coordinates for the field day site: 40.57539, -98.13776.
