The USS LST 325, a 328-foot-long Landing Ship Tank, will dock in Hannibal Riverfront. It will be available for tours September 15th – 18th from 9 AM to 5 PM. This ship participated in the D-Day Invasion on June 6th, 1944.

In 1941, they were the largest ship designed to place tanks, troops and cargo onto a hostile beach and then retract off the shore. 1,051 LSTs were built for WWII. Churchill called it “The Ship That Won the War.”

These LST ships could carry twenty Sherman tanks in the giant hold within the ship. They were the only ships ever made that could go anywhere in the world and deposit their cargo onto a hostile beach and then go get another load. On the main deck they could also carry 30-40 trucks, tons of fuels, ammunition or supplies and soldiers. The LSTs were used during World War II, Korea, and the Vietnam conflicts. This ship, LST 325, was in the invasion at Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. It was also at Sicily on July 10, 1943.

All crew members/guides are volunteers who take the ship to ports to bring history to life. Your tour includes a handout, a self-guided tour through many parts of the ship, the opportunity to take pictures, and of course a chance to stop by the gift shop! All money goes to support this living museum. These self-guided tours typically take 30-45 minutes. More information about what to expect on the tour can be found by viewing this brief video .

To set up school/group tours, before the docking, please call the LST office at 812-435-8678 or email [email protected] . Group rates are available.

  • Adults 18 and older - $15

Step into history: World War II ship LST 325 docked for public tours in Hannibal

The LST 325, a 328-foot-long landing ship, has docked on the Hannibal Riverfront, and the public is invited to take tours.

These ships could carry twenty Sherman tanks in the giant hold within the ship.

The LST 325 was one of the first to be built and it is the only operational LST in the United States. It was built in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by the U.S. Navy Shipyard. Other ships were built on the Illinois River at Seneca, Illinois, on the Ohio River at two shipyards in Pittsburgh, in Jeffersonville and Evansville, Indiana.

Hundreds of these ships sailed on the rivers on their way to the Gulf of Mexico and to WWII. These shipyards were able to complete a ship every five days. Workers, welders, and equipment installers then boarded these vessels and completed the ship while it was enroute down the Mississippi River.

In a little more than three years, 1,051 LSTs were built. The United States never lost an invasion once the LSTs were designed, produced, and could land the big tanks right on the beach.

People can tour the ship from Friday, September 15th through Monday, September 18th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tours are available 9 am to 5 pm.

Step into history: World War II ship LST 325 docked for public tours in Hannibal

A World War II warship will dock in three US cities and you can explore it. Here's how and where

ship tour hannibal mo

A one-of-a-kind World War II-era ship that helped turn the tide for the Allies will be moored and open for tours in three U.S. cities starting at the end of August.

The chance to board the USS LST 325 , the last fully functional Landing Ship Tank remaining in the country, will appeal to history junkies and maritime buffs everywhere.

The ship is docked and open for tours in Evansville, Indiana eleven months out of the year, but will take its annual voyage to three port cities.

This year, the USS LST 325 will visit La Crosse, Wisconsin; Dubuque, Iowa; and Hannibal, Missouri over the course of a month.

The ship has sailed on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and has docked in places such as Nashville, Tennessee; Vicksburg, Mississippi; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Here's everything you need to know if you plan on visiting the LST 325 in a couple of weeks.

Here’s when the LST 325 will be moored in your city

  • August 31 to September 4: La Crosse, Wisconsin.
  • September 7-12: Dubuque, Iowa.
  • September 15-18: Hannibal, Missouri.

Visitors will be able to tour the ship between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The cost is $15 for adults, $7 for child ages 6 to 17 and free for children 5 and younger.

Your admission includes a self-guided walking tour of the vessel, but guided tours are also available upon request.

Skywatchers rejoice: This August, you'll see a rare blue moon − plus another supermoon

What will the tours entail?

The LST's mission was once to deliver tanks, vehicles, supplies, cargo and troops directly onto enemy beaches. Now it is used to teach people about the roles of LSTs in World War II and in the Korean and Vietnam wars, highlighting the sailors who manned it in those conflicts.

The annual cruises aim to introduce LST 325 to a larger geographic area to raise awareness and donations needed to preserve and maintain the ship.

The self-guided tours, which take visitors along a designated route including six flights of stairs and last about 45 minutes, give people an opportunity to explore a vessel that participated in the D-Day invasion. The ship is outfitted to match what it looked like during its World War II service. Visitors will be able to explore areas such as the main deck, troop berthing area, the tank deck, the mess, galley, wheelhouse, the officers' areas and the captain's cabin.

What makes the LST so special?

LSTs were built during World War II to help Allied forces invade areas held by the enemy. LSTs had specially designed hulls and flat bottoms that allowed them to run their bow directly onto beaches and unload their cargo, according to the United States LST Association . They could land on just about any type of shore that had a gradually sloped beach.

At the time, the ship was the largest of the vessels used by by the newly created Amphibious Forces.

Was it dangerous to serve on an LST?

Yes. Several crew members of LST 325 were wounded by air attacks during World War II, according to the LST Ship Memorial website .

LST's were lightly armed, typically with seven 40 mm and 12 20 mm antiaircraft guns. The LST 325 has guns as it did in World War II; 40 mm rounds were fired when the ship was moved in 2020 from a marina to its current, more-visible downtown location, according to the Evansville Courier & Press .

The ships were powered by two diesel engines and plowed through the water with a maximum speed of 11.5 knots, or just over 13 mph. Sailors nicknamed the ships "Large Slow Target," according to the LST Association.

What did LST 325 and its crew do during World War II?

After its February 1943 shakedown cruise around Norfolk, Virginia, the ship and her crew sailed to New York City and then left for Oran, Algeria, according to the LST Ship Memorial website.

Among some of its duties throughout the war, the ship supported Allied military forces in Tunisia in North Africa and Sicily and Salerno in Italy. It was involved in training exercises in preparation for D-Day, and unloaded men and vehicles onto smaller craft while anchored off Omaha Beach during the Allied invasion of France.

After that, it supplied Allied forces battling the German Army in France, and on Dec. 28, 1944, helped rescue about 700 men from a troop transport that was torpedoed off the coast of France.

A look back at D-Day: Why the World War II invasion remains important on its 79th anniversary

Why is LST 325 permanently moored in Evansville, Indiana?

LST 325 served the Greek Navy from 1964 until December of 1999, when it was decommissioned. It then was purchased by the LST Ship Memorial, a nonprofit group that aims to preserve the ship and use it for educational purposes. The ship ended up in its home port of Evansville because the city has a historic link to LSTs, said Cory Burdette, museum operations coordinator, in an email interview.

He said shipbuilders across the United States made 1,051 LSTs during World War II, but the Evansville builder, Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Co., made the most, 167.

"We're kind of like the 'LST capital,' so to speak," Burdette said.

Also, he added, being on the Ohio River allows the ship to cruise within days to major cities in the middle of the U.S., including Chicago, Indianapolis and St. Louis.

Hannibal MO is a Mississippi River cruise port and town in Missouri USA (counties Marion and Ralls). It is located approx 160 km (100 ml) northwest of St Louis and has population around 10,000.

The city is best-known as the home of Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835-1910 / US writer, publisher, lecturer) and as the setting of his fictional town St Petersburg in the novels "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" (published 1876) and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" (published 1884). There are numerous historical sites related to the writer and many sites depicted in his novels. This draws many tousands of both US and international tourists. In 2012, "Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum" marked its 100th anniversary, hosting visitors from all the US states plus from around 60 foreign countries.

Due to its low taxes, Hannibal MO emerges as a business destination, together with the town's close proximity to major US highways (Interstate 72, Routes 24, 36, 61). As Certified Local Government, Hannibal's residents and businesses take advantage of both federal and state tax credits, as well as grants and other sources of funding. Among city's main sources of revenue are also the Hannibal Regional Hospital and the Hannibal Clinic. Other major businesses are BASF Chemical Corporation, the General Mills plant, Watlow Electric, Swiss Colony (data call center).

In mid-January 2019 was announced that Hannibal's city council approved a 20-year cruise terminal lease deal with Viking Cruises as the company plans to start Mississippi River cruise shipping operations in 2021. By the agreement, Viking pays USD 1 per passenger to the town in exchange for preferential berth rights. The newbuild riverboat  (yet to be named) will have max passenger capacity 338.

Great river dinner cruise

After driving most of the day, we decided to take the riverboat dinner cruise to unwind and enjoy the river. I called as soon as we checked into our hotel, and since it was a Tuesday evening, we had no trouble reserving a table. We were one of the first to board the boat, and after finding our table—plainly labeled with our last name—we got a couple of cocktails and roamed the boat. The Mark Twain has 3 decks that are open to the public. The first houses the dining room, which doubles for the entertainment area and contains the bar; the second has both indoor and outdoor seating and river viewing areas. We didn’t go on up to the third deck, but it has a smaller viewing deck that seems to be all outdoor. As soon as we boarded, the musician—an acoustic guitar player/singer—serenaded us with his music that can be enjoyed everywhere on the boat while guests enjoy drinks and the river. I’m not sure exactly what time it was, but we left the dock to begin the 2-hour cruise. Once we pulled away from shore, the music was stopped while dinner was served. The buffet offered guests two meats—roast beef and grilled chicken—salad, green beans, pasta salad, baked potato, and rolls. A dessert of chocolate brownies is brought to your table toward the end of the meal. The food was delicious! While we ate, brief narratives were offered about the history of the boat, the Mississippi River, and Hannibal sites along the river. Once we finished eating, we meandered along the deck, and soon the music began again. The sunset was beautiful as we watched the day come to an end. The staff was courteous and helpful throughout our trip. As we disembarked and walked through the gift shop, we purchased the photo that is taken of every guest. For us, it was worth the $10 price. I highly recommend any trip to Hannibal to include the Mark Twain Riverboat dinner cruise.

ship tour hannibal mo

We did this the first night we arrived in Hannibal. We were lucky to get the evening tour as it sold out. Our seat was at a window so we were able to look at the scenery while we ate. The food was just okay - it was a buffet - but still a great experience that we are glad we did. I definitely recommend doing this while you're in town, but buy your tickets well ahead of time.

This boat provides a short trip down the Mississippi river and a little history of the area. The riverboat features multiple levels and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. There is a small eating area where you can get some snacks and or a nice adult beverage. There are multiple trips - some catered, some just short haunts down the river. Either way, you can’t go wrong - definitely recommend!

ship tour hannibal mo

Went on the dinner cruise and had a good time The weather was nice to spend time outside before and after the meal. The meal was served buffet style and was good. Also enjoyed the musical entertainment. It was a pleasant evening. Have been on other dinner cruises on different vacations and this was comparable in experience and price.

What a wonderful experience! We went on the dinner cruise with a party of twenty family members and had a great time. Relaxed watching the shore as the boat smoothly floated along. Dinner was typical buffet. Beer, wine and cocktails were reasonably priced - iced tea and water were free. Music was a combination of recorded and live. Dancing was fun. Will do this again sometime.

We took the afternoon tour and loved it. Captain tells about all the places along the river banks. We had a choice of shady inside or outside deck and went back and forth to get pictures.
