Titled ‘Race The Night’, the band’s latest LP marks the first album they have released together in more than five years. Ash have also released the LP’s title track. “’Race the Night’ video is the product from the fevered mind of long-time friend and horror director Jed Shepherd. Wheeler explains that “Race the Night is the sound of the band reveling in the sheer joy of being a band after being separated by time and distance through the insanity of the early 2020s. Lyrically it’s all about seizing the crossroads moments in life with both hands. Take every chance as if it could be your last.”

'Race The Night', the follow-up to 2018's 'Islands', will be released on September 15 through Fierce Panda. Watch: Ash unveils new single ‘Usual Places’ and music video
Ash has debuted new single ‘Usual Places’ from forthcoming album ‘Race The Night’, released on 15th September 2023.
‘Usual Places’ received its first play on Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6 Music show today. The song is the follow-up to ‘Race the Night’ and ‘Like a God’, the first two tasters from upcoming album ‘Race the Night’. Frontman Tim Wheeler describes the new music as “the sound of the band reveling in the sheer joy of being a band after being separated by time and distance through the insanity of the early 2020s.”
‘Usual Places’ was written as testimony to lives forever changed during the time before they were able to reunite and work on new music. Three and a half minutes of brisk power pop set a buoyant backdrop to its longing for all that was lost.
Wheeler comments: “Originally written as a tribute to long forgotten bars and faces as I was leaving New York, ‘Usual Places’ took on extra significance as the first thing we worked on together post-lockdown. Below the surface of the joy of writing and playing together again, there’s a subconscious grief to all that was lost in those years. Friends and family, pubs and venues. This is our eulogy to them all. No coincidence the video was shot in the Marquis of Lorne, just a walk from Brixton Academy.”
Ash will be playing a week-long run of instore / outstore live shows as ‘Race The Night’ is released. The shows will combine Q&As, acoustic sets and signings, as well as a special show at Pryzm Kingston, at which the band will play tracks from the new album fully electric for the first time. Wishbone Ash at the Jahrhunderthalle, Frankfurt put on a superb show including a mix of old and new tracks. The quality of the musicianship was fantastic and the acoustics in the concert hall were excellent. It’s great to experience a band that can still produce a high level of entertainment and belt out songs that originated fifty years ago. It was an exhilarating performance from the group and it appeared they really enjoyed putting on the show. There was great interaction with the audience, all of whom responded with enthusiastic applause. What a night! Well done Wishbone Ash!

Newcastle and the northeast has historically been a Wishbone Ash stronghold for nearly half a century with a sizable following of loyal fans who have turned out annually to see them ever since their heydays back in the early 1970's when Newcastle City Hall was a regular venue on their tour sheet and of course where tracks from their best selling live album, Live Date were recorded.
During recent years, however, Wishbone Ash have been playing venues in and around Newcastle that were far below the bands'status of being one of the most influential guitar bands in the world.
However, agents and promotors pulled their collective stops out for the bands 50th anniversary tour to book them into the Sage, Hall 2. Back in a venue more fitting to their music and in the hub of the Newcastle/Gateshead music scene unsurprisingly the show sold out in record time.
Andy Powell, the bands only remaining original member, who has kept the bands'unique twin lead trademark sound alive by recording and touring tirelessly for 50 years commented on how lucky we were to have such a nice venue with such a great sound. Now joined by his 9th "twin", Mark Abrahams, more than half Mr Powells' age, the equally youthful Joe Crabtree on drums and long-serving member of the quartet, Bob Skeat on bass, the band treated their spell-bound audience to a blistering two hour musical tour highlighting the 5 decades of their career, from the first album through to a track recorded for their new album, Coat of Arms, due for release in January. Although the twin lead trademark sound underpinned the set, not one song sounded like another. The well-chosen set selected from their 24 studio and live albums not only demonstrated the diversity and variety in mood, colour, tone and texture of their music but of course their musical craftmanship and abilities both in writing and performing. It may be true to say that many bands from the late sixties/early seventies still performing are past their peak but the general vibe amongst the audience after the show was that they had witnessed something fresh and new in music from the past 50 years. That may be the secret to Wishbone Ash's longevity. They have never stood still forever evolving, never allowing themselves to be pigeon holed.
Due to the demand for this show Wishbone Ash return to the Sage in January 2021 but this time in the larger hall 1. No surprise.
The guys were on it from the moment they came on stage. A great set list from across the decades really helped the night go well.
Probably one of the best performances I’ve seen in a long while, if not ever. Sound mix was good as you could clearly pick out each of the band, and boy what a band. Andy, Bob, Mark and Joe really worked as one and it was a pleasure to witness it.
Happy 50th chaps and here’s to many more. See you again next year . . .

Wishbone Ash to tour UK
Andy Powell and co release limited-edition straight-to-vinyl live album
Wishbone Ash have confirmed a UK tour for October and November.
And Andy Powell and co have launched a straight-to-vinyl live album, recorded as it was played, with just 750 copies available.
Powell – who won a legal battle with Martin Turner over the band’s name last year – says: “We’re looking forward to reconnecting with fans from the past who are just catching on that we’ve been touring non-stop for 46 years.
“And for our faithful fans who’ve walked with us consistently, we have some special things in store.”
The vinyl record, Live At Metropolis , was recorded at the London venue in May. The band explain: “As soon as the cutting needle hit the acetate, we started performing side A –and didn’t stop until the needle was lifted. The process meant that even the gaps between songs were live.”
It’s available now , and no further releases are planned in any format. A live DVD, recorded in Paris following the Metropolis show, is to be launched next month.
