The  Travellers Rest

Pub & restaurant.

travellers rest lowton

The Travellers Rest is a traditional country pub, dating back to the 19th century, with oak beams and an ‘olde world’ feel.  The pub has a warm and friendly atmosphere and has been serving the local community for over 150 years. The pub serves a wide range of cask ales and other beers, ciders, wines and spirits together with a varied food menu of locally sourced seasonal ingredients. Located in a semi-rural area on the outskirts of Lowton, we are within 2 miles of both J22 and J23 of M6 Motorway and within 1 mile of Haydock Park Racecourse. The countryside surrounding the pub and the local beauty spot Highfield Moss are popular with walkers, dog walkers and cyclists who often use the pub as a watering hole. Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome in our tap room area and we even provide free dog biscuits to reward good behaviour.

The Travellers Rest

Ratings and reviews, food and ambience, location and contact.

Thank you for your lovely review!

Group aged 2 - 85. Staff very patient will latecomers and varied selection from the menu. Only negative comment would be that the steak was not quite as requested but generally the food was good quality and carefully prepared. Drinks bill maybe a bit high... More

Had a fabulous meal this afternoon at the Travellers Rest in Lowton. A really extensive menu which includes a Sunday roast I went for the pork stroganoff which was absolutely superb. Debs asked for mash instead of chips to accompany her chicken breast with peppercorn... More

Thank you!! 😁

Celebrated my 85th Birthday with family in this old country pub. Excellent service and ambiance. All meals arrived hot and at the same time - which cannot be said for more highly priced venue previous week. Varied selections from menu and everyone enjoyed their choice.... More

Thank you so much! I will pass on your lovely comments to my wonderful team! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! X

My wife and I tried the Travellers for an early Friday evening meal. We arrived a little early and were shown into the bar area where we were given menus to peruse whilst we waited for our table. Very pleasant bar area with welcoming friendly... More

Thank you Garry!! 😊

Been here many times but on our last visit 25 Nov our experience was far from good. Many more tables in the restaurant made it a cramped experience and the extra covers clearly overloaded the kitchen as we waited an hour for the food to... More

Excellent Sunday lunch - 3 courses for £19.95, with a lot of great choices, and generous portion sizes, including delicious vegetarian options. Speaking of which, we’d recommend the mushrooms and Stilton starter as well as the veggie Sunday roast. All of the desserts, including the... More

We booked a table in the restaurant, we then called to say we were bringing our dig was that ok. We were informed we would have to eat in the pub side. Upon arrival we were greeted with a very frosty person who complained they... More

Thank’s for your feedback. It’s been noted and taken on board.

Really poor meal that ruined what should have been a lovely trip out . The ‘festive’ roast was borderline inedible but the steak truly was - completely raw onion rings, uncooked mushrooms, burnt chips and massively over-salted steak. Nobody checked if the food was okay... More

Your feedback has been taken on board Ivan and passed onto our chefs. A check back was done at your table but not all of your party acknowledged our member of staff.

Been here several times over last few years, Quality and service was excellent, unfortunately this was not the case on our last visit. We had to ask for orders to be taken, whether we were forgotten, I don't know. When served, our starter's weren't the... More

Visited on 14th January 23 for Sunday lunch having previously had excellent meal here. Sunday lunch was mediocre - roast beef was tough and chewy and roast potatoes were not roasted. Other vegetables were a mixture from a frozen pack. Sticky toffee pudding was solid... More

Thank you so much, lovely to meet you. Hope to see you again soon 😁

Just how difficult is it to make a decent roast potato? We were served insipid, hard inside, cold potatoes, along with fatty roast ham and wet over-cooked frozen veg. The chocolate trifle wasn’t set, it was more like Angel Delight with too much milk added.

Thanks for your feedback Sharon, this has been passed over to our chefs. Sorry you didn't enjoy your roast potatoes or trifle.

After wondering what to do on a Bank Holiday Monday, we decided to nip to the Travellers. Parked at the front and asked for a table for 2. Staff explained that if we sit in the garden for a quick drink, never to be refused,... More

The Travellers Rest

Ratings and reviews, food and ambience, location and contact.

Well, what can we say! We were absolutely blown away by the food last night! Every week, the travellers rest team put on a fantastic deal of a 3 course meal dine in for two for £30 every Saturday night!! This week, the food was... Mexican themed, so we thought why not have a bit of fun and make a fiesta out of it, with decorations bought and food pre ordered it was so nice have something to look forward to! The meal was exceptionally tasty and everyone loved their choices! I personally had chilli beef nachos for starters, Smokey pork belly and avocado soft shell tacos for my main and a traditional Mexican dessert called Margarita Tres Leches. Safe to say, I was left with a full belly after that! I just want to thank the lovely team at The Travellers Rest for working so hard every weekend to put on fantastic food for people to enjoy. We are so lucky to have this as our local and we can’t wait until you can reopen again! 🙌🏼 See you when we can! 😊 More

WOW! Annabelle thank you for your incredible review! We are so happy we could add a bit of "Travs Love" to your lock down Mexican Fiesta, sounds like you had a fun night! The Travellers Rest is the heart of a wonderful community and we... More

Two friends and I have been to the Travellers Rest on numerous occasions over the years but this was the first time since the pandemic. I believe that it is under new ownership. We ordered a bottle of red wine (Primitivo) which we have had... before and is excellent. I ordered crab/prawn cocktail which was okay but my friend's pan-fried king prawns in a chilli and garlic cream sauce looked superb and he said it was and I will try it next time we go. The other starter was wild mushrooms, which my other friend said was very spicy but very filling for a starter course. All three had sirloin steaks which were cooked medium rare as requested. We agreed that they did not compare in quality with the rib-eyes which were on the menu two or three years ago. They were okay but a bit chewy. Maybe there has been a change of butcher(?) I had two scoops of ice cream to finish and one friend had the cheese cake, then coffees and in my case a Martell cognac to end the meal. One concern was that I noticed, when booking, that there was a request to vacate the table after two hours, This concerned me as we usually book a table for 6.45pm and leave around 9.30pm. Given that the bill was £170 and it was a Thursday, I think some amendment should be made. I spoke to a waiter who explained the Covid issues and that many people who did book chose Fridays and Saturdays and they needed the two tier arrangement to satisfy the number of bookings in these difficult times. I understood and there was no question of hurrying us but perhaps that, now we are in more normal times again, they will restrict these arrangements to their busiest times. The service was first class and friendly and we left feeling that we had had a good meal at a not unreasonable price. They will resume their usual 5 stars if the choices, or cut of meat. improve before we go again, which will be soon. I hope that the management takes the points I have made as helpful. More

Hi Stephen, Thank you so much for your lovely review. Sirloin is our chosen cut for our Restaurant menu however Ribeye and Fillet is often a dish our Chef’s include on our Special’s menu, hopefully it’s on next time you visit. Many thanks.

Been to the Travellers so many times inc. several xmas days. Went today and the food is still excellent. Service is friendly and quick. However, I have to comment on the portions which were small and insufficient. I watched several meals come out and it... was a constant theme that meals could be 50% more. They always used to but as I said quality is there just not the content. More

Hello David, thank you so much for your feedback we are glad you enjoyed your visit. Regarding your point about small and insufficient portions it really does surprise me as we have currently had to adapt our menu to serve smaller versions of our dishes... More

This evening I went for a meal with my wife. As we do not drink another or frequent public houses are main leisure time together is eating out. We eat out approx 3 times a week so I don't say this lightly but our meals... at The Travellers Rest in Lowton this evening was the worst quality meal we have ever had. I do not use trip advisor often but after the disappointment this evening it is only fair to let other people know. My wife got pate to start with which the bread was unbreakable. The hardest bread I've ever come across. You could literally hit the table with it. My wife's main meal was gammon and egg with chips. The chips were solid, the egg was like a piece of rubber. It was shameful. I ordered the salmon which when it came it was all burnt crispy on the outside and freezing cold as was the sauce to go with it. It was only afterwards that we both realised both our meals had been pre cooked and microwaved after they received the order but obviously not microwaved long enough. I very seldom complain and I did not at the time.e. what is the point of sending it back to be put in z microwVe for another 3 minutes but I did make the staff aware when I was leaving. I would just like to say this place is definitely of our eating out venue list aswell as informing all our family and friends not to visit there. If someone from the restaurant would like to respond ypu are more than welcome; [email protected] More

Let me put the record straight Johnny, our food is prepared freshly to order. We do not use microwave ovens to warm food. Our menu states that our pate is “served with crisp breads and a rich tomato chutney”. If your wife had wanted a... More

My husband and I visited Saturday evening at 6pm. Seated and drinks orders placed quickly. My husband had prawn starter and a fillet steak and said it was probably the best steak he's ever had! I ordered feta salad starter and then cold-water seafood platter.... The starter was advertised with olives and balsamic glaze. No olives served with it and a wholegrain mustard dressing!!!! The cheese appeared to be supermarket salad cheese wich looks like Feta but isn't, its not crumbly and virtually has no taste. I ate the salad as I was hungry and it wasn't unpleasant but wasn't what was advertised This was fed back to the waitress when our plates where collected and requested it was fedback to the kitchen. Seafood platter main course was ok, but just ok. Only rescued as I had order some sweet potato fries to go with it. We then waited 35 minutes with empty glasses and plates, and waited and waited. My husband even tried twice to summon the waiting staff ( verbally) but either not heard or ignored. Eventually we got up , having only had one drink and plates still on the table, to the main desk to settle our bill. We also then waited 5 mins till someone came . We fed back our disappointment and paid our full bill, no apology Sadly we will not be re visiting such a disappointment. More

Thank you Anne for your ‘almost’ honest review. Your complaint was dealt with at the time of your visit - you were given a large bowl of olives as these had been missed off your Greek Salad. Additionally, the Feta we use is also authentic... More

Having been to the Travellers a number of times before the change in ownership we anticipated a continuation in meal quality and service. Sadly all four of us were somewhat disappointed. Firstly the main meal portions all round were disappointingly small. The disappointment was further... enhanced by sticky toffee puddings being a piece of cake covered in toffee sauce and the pannacottas being somewhat "rubbery".Granted the restaurant was pretty full so service was slow and maybe we were unlucky, being more or less the last diners to arrive at 7.30pm. We were asked how we found things and replied " All Right "which should have prompted a further question. Not the Travellers we remember ! More

Hi Ian, we are sorry to hear that your experience at The Travellers wasn’t as you had anticipated since change of ownership. The new owners have in fact been managing The Travellers for the last 3 years so it really is surprising that your experience... More

Having booked and advised one in the party is , GF No menu was offered. And the waiter was unsure what was available. 40 minutes for soup and sandwich is too long especially when the soup was sent back as cold, Two of the party... had Curry that was tasteless. More

We were very disappointed with our visit yesterday....first we were given the menus and when we chose what we wanted we were then told it wasn't available. I went for a chichen chorizo pie, it came very over cooked, difficult to cut open and very... dry. The service is basically youngsters and no senior staff about in the restaurant area and during the meal must of had half a dozen attending to us. Meals arrived at different times, some drinks spilt on the tray knocked red wine into the pint of beer...no replacement offered.. We visited pre covid and it was excellent, so we asked friends local to the area to join us whilst we were passing by the area, their impression was the same, it wasn't what we expected. Guess we were the unlucky ones as all tables seemed full. More

Thank you for your feedback. I wish you had raised any things that weren’t to your satisfaction with my team at the time, so that we could have dealt with them. Your comments about my team being young are irrelevant though, unless you received poor... More

We ordered three takeaway meals having previously enjoyed the food from here pre lockdown. We ordered the small fish and chips, pie and chips and chicken burger. The chicken burger was the only tasty looking element. Limp soggy chips, a sweaty fish so small it... may as well have been a fish finger, a teaspoon worth of mushy peas, no tartare sauce at all. Pie pastry was soggy as were the chips. So so disappointing. Paid slightly under £30 for that. More

Bluelou99 - thank you for your feedback. We do think your review is slightly unfair as you failed to mention that you arrived 15 minutes late to collect your takeaway, which had been prepared for the exact time you had ordered it for. Travel time... More

Fantastic Sunday meal with the family. The first time we’ve been back since the re-opening after lock down and all I can say is that the food was so good, staff couldn’t do any more to help, assist and be friendly. Both adults had Sunday... roast dinners but my wife requires gluten free and this was easily accommodated and well managed. We will be returning, probably in the week. Excellent. More

Thank you so much for your lovely review. Our dishes are all cooked from fresh therefore our chefs can cater for dietary requirements most of the time. We look forward to having you back and seeing you soon! Kindest regards, Lauren x

We used to come to the Travellers and love the food it was well above average food and a good ambience. It has been taken over by new owners, I believe the sous chef has now become the owner and is now also the head... chef according to a member of staff who worked there. We have been on two occasions, as we very rarely eat out it is usually a treat. Unfortunately the food has really gone downhill, which is really sad as it's a lovely pub with nice staff and having nice food would be brilliant. The portions are miniscule for the money you pay, which would be fine if the food was really nice, it's not, it's just slightly below average, undercooked veg and overcooked meat/fish. I believe the pie is very nice in fairness. Also the staff are lovely. We will be visiting again, but only for drinks, we won't be eating here again. Before it was slightly more expensive than most pubs in the area, but it was worth the money, now I'm not so sure. More

Hi Felicity, thank you for your feedback, however I think you may have a couple of your complaints a little mixed up. Yes we are new owners, however it is the same management and our chef has been the head chef for the last 5... More

Visited a couple of times for Sunday lunch and the food is always delicious. The only issue here is that you wait forever to place your order if you’re sat towards the back of the restaurant. We sat down at 4pm and placed drinks orders... straight away which came promptly, despite asking passing servers to order 3 times it took 30 minutes for someone to come over - it appears only one lady can take food orders which on a busy Sunday seems ridiculous. We then waited another 30 minutes for our food to be served. The main meals are a little small - I had 2 potatoes but it is very tasty. More

We attended as a fairly large group for lunch, on separate tables due to Covid restrictions. I was impressed that all the food arrived hot, more or less together - a feat in itself due to the size of the order and the food was... really lovely. Everyone was happy with their order and I wasn’t aware of any mistakes. The only minor thing to note was the Biscoff cheesecake was very soft and had collapsed - nontheless it tasted fab! I would definitely return not least because I want to try the other options on the menu!! More

Thank you so much for your lovely review, I will pass on your kind words to our team which I’m sure will give them all a boost which we certainly need in these difficult times! So glad you enjoyed your visit and hopefully we will... More

The Traveller’s has a traditional country pub feel yet is modern and comfortable. The food is always brilliant - we had pan fried chicken breast and the home made chicken curry this time, both of which were exceptional. The staff are always very friendly and... treat all customers to a smile. They are considerate too and always make a fuss of our four-legged friend, which means a great deal to us. The clientele are pretty friendly on the whole too, with most people willing to pass the time of day with others, which is another great plus for this venue. We’ll definitely be back again soon as it’s my new favourite place! More

Thank you for your lovely review! Your comments mean so much to all of our team, and WOW! Your new favourite place!? Thank you so much!! Hopefully we will see you very soon… Kindest regards, Kane and Lauren x

Decided to travel out of our home in Liverpool to visit the “Travellers Rest” in Lowton just outside Warrington in countryside. It was a very hot and sunny day on Friday 16th July and when we arrived at about 19.00 it was no surprise to... see all garden tables fully occupied with groups enjoying the late sunshine. Whilst we had pre-booked an inside table for later we both enjoyed excellent service whilst outside by the young lady assistants. We then enjoyed a superb meal indoors in beautiful typical “country pub” surroundings with again , quick pleasant service. The menu is short enough to give you an excellent choice of varied foods with real craft ales on tap . So many thanks to James, Beth, Fabian and Lucas together with all remaining staff for making our visit enjoyable. We shall definitely be visiting again and I would highly recommend this venue to everybody. Kind regards Fred and Dawn from Liverpool. More

Why Do Moscow Mules Come in Copper Mugs?

Oct 18, 2019

Have you ever wondered why the Moscow Mule cocktail is served in a copper mug? In this post, we answer that question in detail. As it turns out, the answer is partly based on historical events and partly based on the extra "kick" that copper brings to this classic cocktail. Let's dive in!

Introduction

Moscow Muled copper mug filled with liquid ice and sliced lime on its rim

A remarkable cocktail is something you notice from across the room, easily identified by the signature drinking vessel it's served in. Few are more distinct than the burnished copper mug of a Moscow Mule.

Great cocktails aren't just alcohol and mixers––they should be something more, a full sensory experience from beginning to end. It starts as you observe the precise convergence of ingredients in a golden ratio that blossoms into flavors and aromas of citrus and spicy ginger. It is then delivered into an ice-filled copper mug and garnished with fresh mint and a slice of lime.  Finally, it is presented before you, shiny and cold, compelling you to taste.

The copper mule mug not only tells the story of the drink it contains, but also is essentially functional to the full experience. You might already know that the cone-shaped bowl of a long-stemmed Martini glass was designed so that olives would stand perfectly upright, and the elegantly curvaceous welled Margarita glass was designed to add ample salt, sugar and garnishes.

But why are Moscow Mules served in copper mugs?

Inquiring minds want to know, so this article will sum up the science and history of why traditional Moscow Mules come in copper mugs, and other legit benefits of serving cocktails in pure copper mugs. This includes:

A Brief History of the Moscow Mule

The science of using copper mugs.

  • How Copper Mugs Amplify the Taste & Aroma of your Moscow Mule
  • The Enhanced Experience of Drinking from a Pure Copper Mug

The origin of this timeless cocktail is the tale of the American Dream. One fateful day in 1941 , three struggling entrepreneurs had a serendipitous meeting at the Cock 'N Bull bar on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood: A bar owner passionate about his unpopular home-brewed ginger beer, a businessman who took a big chance and purchased Smirnoff vodka, and a Russian immigrant with a cache of copper mugs she couldn't seem to sell. That day, the unlikely trio wisely decided to join forces in a bold venture that would not only save their individual businesses, but also create an iconic American cocktail.

Essentially, the Moscow Mule is the most successful marketing campaign in cocktail history. At a time when most Americans had never even heard of vodka, this cocktail introduced them to the traditional Russian alcohol, and established Smirnoff as a necessity in both bars and homes alike.

Thanks to celebrity endorsement, the Moscow Mule soon took the Hollywood cocktail scene by storm, and quickly became the most beloved mixed drink of the 1950's.

It's popularity understandably waned during the Cold War, and it was briefly re-branded as the Smirnoff Mule to distance itself from communism. However, the recent cocktail renaissance of the 21st century has seen the Moscow Mule come kicking back, as evidenced by lists like Esquire's Top 10 Cocktails of 2019 , and Business Insider's 8th Best-selling Cocktail in the World, 2018 .

But the answer to why Moscow Mules are served in copper mugs goes much further than a conveniently clever alliance between co-founders desperate for a big break. The story of the Moscow Mule is both the struggle of the immigrant searching for success, and the flashy lifestyle of the rich and famous.

It boasts a simple recipe , yet a complex flavor profile, encapsulated in a shiny copper mug. And as delicious and refreshing as the Moscow Mule may be, it's the copper mug that makes the cocktail so extraordinary.  Like the drink itself, the pure copper mule mug is a balance of form and functionality.

The most scientific benefit of the copper mug is its ability to regulate temperature. When a drink is served in a copper mug, it gets cold fast––and stays that way.

Copper is a renowned thermal conductor that will keep your beverage frosty in any weather, and is one of the reasons the traditional Moscow Mule has become synonymous with summer. Add a little ice, and the copper chills drinks instantly, and sustains a refreshingly icy rim with every sip.

Because copper is such an excellent conductor, it can keep your cold beverages colder for longer. The downfall of many ill-fated cocktails on a hot summer day is melting ice. Copper mugs stay brisk, and don't disrupt the recipe's ratio, so the simple yet distinct flavors of the Moscow Mule remain strong till the last drop.

Another important feature of the solid copper Moscow Mule mug is the handle. Much like the stem of a wine glass, the copper mug handle keeps the nearly 100 degree body temperature of your hand from impacting the status of your deliciously frosty cocktail.

How Copper Mugs Amplify the Taste and Aroma of Your Moscow Mule

If you want to know what a Moscow Mule tastes like, purists would insist the only way to experience it is in a 100% copper mug. Aside from being a great American tradition, copper mugs offer some unique enhancements to both the flavor and aroma of the Moscow Mule (or almost any finely-crafted cocktail).

Although subjective, most discerning drinkers would agree that copper mugs imbue cocktails with a superior taste. Experts explain that the copper oxidizes the vodka upon contact, thus enhancing the flavor profile and potency of the aromatics.

The intense cold of the copper also creates more stability in the bubbles of the ginger beer carbonation, and balances the tangy citrus of the lime with the earthy spice of the ginger.

For the skeptics out there, the theory of superior taste is easily verifiable. Simply make or order two Moscow Mules––one served in a plastic cup, and one served in a copper mug. Take a moment to inhale deeply, enjoy a big sip, and let your senses be the judge.

The epiphany should take a matter of moments, and you soon realize why a Moscow Mule is best served in a copper mug, and why any other cup or glass is vastly inferior. The difference can be so vivid, you might even consider drinking all your favorite beverages from copper mugs, even hot tea and coffee!

The Enhanced Experience of Drinking From a Pure Copper Mug

Throwing back shots with reckless disregard is a great way to get hammered, but a terrible way to enjoy something delicious. People order cocktails for the full package––observing its creation, revelling in its presentation, and slowly savoring its captivating story and unique taste.

Not only is a cocktail a well-balanced combination of spirits and mixers, it's also about the aesthetic and function of the vessel it's served in. A cocktail should be an object of inspired beauty, presented thoughtfully in a suitable glass or mug and garnished appropriately. It should take time, because it's made by hand.

Although the copper mug has become the symbol of Moscow Mules, it can also pair exquisitely with many other cocktails. Many people seem drawn to the shine and nostalgia of the metal, and Mixologists seem impressed by the scientific properties of the copper mug. Other drinks prominently featured in copper mugs include Dark 'n Stormy, Mescal, Gin & Tonic, and Cuba Libre.

No matter how frosted a beer glass gets, nothing can keep a mixed drink colder than a copper mug. The sensation when one's lips touch the ice-cold rim with every sip is part of the unique experience.

The flavors are heightened, the aromas amplified, and the balance of vodka, lime juice and ginger beer is never watered-down by melting ice. Provided your Moscow Mule is served in a pure copper mug, the last sip should be just as robust and enjoyable as the first.

The benefits of drinking from copper mugs aren't a newfound discovery. In fact, copper has been the preferred metal for drinking vessels for thousands of years.

Gurus in India have been using copper mugs for hundreds of years, and copper goblets called Escra have been found in ancient Irish ruins. Even American settles in 1645 drank exclusively from a massive tankard made of pure copper, known today as the Virginia Tankard .

The Moscow Mule is a classic drink served in a magnificent copper mug because it tells a compelling story, and enhances your consumption experience. It is an unforgettable drink because it's served in a mug that is both more beautiful than and functionally superior to glass.

Three Reasons Moscow Mules Come in Copper Mugs

The reason your Moscow Mule is served in a copper mug is not a fluke. It is not because it's the latest trendy hipster craze. It's not just a marketing ploy (although it definitely started out as one), nor is it a conspiracy by the lobbyists for Big Copper.

Moscow Mules come in copper mugs for three reasons: taste, temperature, and presentation.

The unique experience of drinking a Moscow Mule is a balanced combination of these three elements. It's also the reason this drink is not only the most recognizable, but also consistently one of the most popular drinks in global cocktail culture history.

Taste: The natural properties of the copper oxidize the alcohol, resulting in powerful aromatics and superior flavors. The bubbles of the ginger beer stay fizzy, and perfectly counter the acidity of the fresh lime juice. It's spicy yet refreshing. Simply put, it's delicious!

Temperature: Copper is an ideal thermal conductor, instantly chilling your beverage upon creation, and maintaining a consistently arctic temperature. This prevents the ice from quickly melting and dulling the cocktail ratio, while keeping the rim refreshingly frosty with every sip. The handle also keeps your hot little fingers from fluctuating the temperature with every touch.

Presentation: A glinting copper mug looks authentic and catches the eye. It is vintage, yet modern, and tells a story of creativity, charm and resilience. It is instantly recognizable, and makes for a fine looking beverage. Yes please!

The Bottom Line

The copper mug is iconic, a great American tradition of nearly 80 years, and is the only proper way to drink a Moscow Mule. Cheers!
