Review: New Singapore Airlines x Allianz travel insurance policy

Aaron Wong

Singapore Airlines' travel insurance is now provided by Allianz, and it's every bit an improvement over the previous AIG policy.

Singapore Airlines passengers have the option to purchase an exclusive travel insurance policy that provides coverage for overseas medical expenses (including COVID-19), accidents and travel inconveniences.

This was previously called Travel Insurance by Travel Guard (underwritten by AIG). Singapore Airlines has now replaced this with a new policy called Travel Protect by Singapore Airlines (underwritten by Allianz).

Coverage is available to Singapore Airlines passengers who are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents of Singapore, or Singapore Pass Holders and/or Work Permit Holders and their dependents residing in Singapore. Journeys must commence in Singapore.

I’ve gone through the new Allianz policy, and the good news is it’s a significant improvement from the previous AIG one- not only does it offer more coverage, it’s also cheaper to boot.

Allianz Travel Coverage

travel insurance with singapore airlines

Travel Protect by Singapore Airlines (which for convenience I’ll just refer to as the “Allianz policy” from hereon) provides up to S$1 million of overseas medical coverage and S$500,000 of emergency medical evacuation coverage (both including COVID-19).

The policy is available regardless of whether you bought your ticket with cash or redeemed miles. Coverage can be added either at the time of booking your itinerary, or subsequently via the Manage Booking function.

If you don’t see the option to add insurance, you’ll need to contact customer service at [email protected] or call +65 6245 4059 (Mon-Fri 0930 to 1730 SGT).

Under the Allianz policy wording , you’ll notice two columns: Comprehensive , and KrisFlyer Comprehensive.

travel insurance with singapore airlines

Simply put, if you’re a KrisFlyer member (of any tier) during the period of insurance, you’ll enjoy KrisFlyer Comprehensive coverage. This provides additional coverage for medical expenses, rental car excess, loss of personal documents and more, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t qualify for this.

Comparison: Allianz vs AIG

Here’s a summary of how the new Allianz policy measures up to the previous AIG policy. Do note the following:

  • I’ve used Allianz KrisFlyer Comprehensive as the basis of comparison since it costs nothing to join KrisFlyer
  • AIG’s values have a range because coverage depends on where you’re travelling to. AIG splits the world into three zones: ASEAN, Asia and International. ASEAN has the lowest coverage, while International has the highest
  • AIG also has some supplementary coverage for KrisFlyer members, so I’ve included it where relevant

There’s a lot of information in the table above, but what should immediately jump out is that Allianz not only offers more coverage in most areas, it’s also cheaper than AIG (unfortunately I don’t have historical AIG quotes for travel within Asia/ASEAN, so I can’t make that comparison).

Let’s look at some of the finer details below.

COVID-19 medical expenses & emergency medical evacuation

AIG’s policy covers up to S$350,000 of COVID-19 medical expenses, but Allianz covers up to S$1 million.

More importantly, under the AIG policy both COVID-19 medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation share the same cap  (i.e. the maximum you can claim for COVID-19 medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation is S$350,000).

With Allianz, there is a separate cap for COVID-19 emergency medical evacuation of S$500,000.

Chances are, if your situation is bad enough to warrant medical evacuation to Singapore, you’ve already racked up a sizeable overseas medical bill. You’ll want to ensure there’s enough left over to cover the repatriation.

Quarantine allowance

If you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 overseas and are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, most countries won’t admit you to hospital. Instead, you’ll be issued with a quarantine order, which you’ll serve out in a hotel.

AIG provides a quarantine allowance that varies depending on country (max. 14 consecutive days):

  • ASEAN: S$50 per day
  • Asia: S$100 per day
  • International: S$200 per day

Allianz doesn’t mention a quarantine allowance, but you can make a claim under the trip interruption section for:

Such coverage applies when :

tl;dr: if you get a quarantine order due to COVID-19, you can claim up to S$150 per day for 14 days.

AIG would be more generous for travel outside of Asia and ASEAN, but otherwise Allianz is the superior option.

One-way trips

Given award space constraints, it’s not uncommon for miles collectors to book separate one-way tickets, even if their intention is to fly a round-trip.

While both policies cover one-way trips, AIG was much stricter in its wording. Cover for a one-way trip was limited to certain sections of the policy, commenced 3 hours before leaving Singapore, and ceased at the earlier of:

  • the expiry of the period specified in the insurance; or
  • your arrival at your first overseas destination

That made it highly impractical on its own. Most customers ended up having to write in to AIG and present 2x one-way tickets, in order to get quoted insurance on a round-trip basis.

Allianz is much kinder with its treatment of one-way trips.

If your policy was purchased with a one-way booking, your coverage end date will be the  scheduled return date for your trip, as shown on your travel documents (not exceeding 30 days from the departure date shown on your travel documents). Additionally, your policy will end on the earliest of:

1.  At 23:59 on the day you cancel your policy; or 2. At 23:59 on the day you file a trip cancellation claim with us; 3. At 23:59 on the day you end your trip, if you end your trip early; 4. At 23:59 on the day you arrive at a medical facility for further care if you end your trip due to a medical reason; or 5. At 23:59 on the 180th day of the trip

Trip cancellation

In terms of trip cancellation, AIG covers a pre-departure COVID-19 diagnosis, plus the usual reasons like death or serious sickness, witness summons, and natural disasters affecting your destination.

However, Allianz provides a much wider range of covered reasons (16 in total), including a COVID-19 diagnosis, a traffic accident on departure date, getting laid off from work, securing a new job, or having your travel documents stolen.

However, note that neither policy covers trip cancellation resulting from border closures or additional quarantine requirements (so they wouldn’t cover the current situation with Italy , for example).

Coverage of airline miles

travel insurance with singapore airlines

Speaking of trip cancellation, AIG’s policy explicitly states that it will not cover the loss of air miles used to pay for the trip.

On the other hand, Allianz’s policy is silent about this subject; the only line I can find that refers to air miles is this:

I take it to mean they  will  cover such claims, insofar as they relate to the redeposit of airline miles.

Here’s the thing though. There are only two scenarios where you could lose your KrisFlyer miles due to a cancelled trip:

  • You booked a Spontaneous Escapes award , which is strictly non-refundable
  • Your airline miles have already expired at the time of refund (remember: miles validity is different from ticket validity; if this concept confuses you, read this article )

(1) isn’t an issue right now, because Singapore Airlines has suspended Spontaneous Escapes. With regards to (2), Singapore Airlines has granted extensions to all KrisFlyer miles so the earliest any will expire is April 2022.

In all other situations, you can pay a penalty fee to recover the miles used for your booking, as shown below.

Even if you miss your flight (i.e. no show), the miles are still recoverable. For example, if you made a Business Saver reservation and missed your flight, you’d pay a US$300 no show fee, plus a US$75 fee to change your dates.

Therefore it might not be all that important for travel insurance to cover miles at this juncture, since there’s no Spontaneous Escapes nor expiry.

Unless I’m missing something, Singapore Airlines’ new Allianz travel insurance policy looks to be every bit an improvement over the previous AIG one. Travellers enjoy more generous coverage for a lower fee, and this will more than satisfy the requirements for countries with mandatory COVID-19 travel insurance requirements (e.g. South Korea, Thailand).

Anything else you spotted in the policies worth flagging?

The definition of quarantine in this Allianz policy is so much more reasonable than some other insurers like Chubb. Allianz covers hotel. Chubb covers only government-appointed facilities which is useless in most of the destinations.

bluepanda

This Allianz insurance is new, so its actuarial computations are updated with the most recent data and environment (including where to quarantine). Others were launched earlier using older sets of assumptions and data. They can’t just change coverage anyhow. It’s unfortunate but there is a certain due process.

Hopefully they can change soon. I really liked using Chubb before the pandemic.

Aaron Wong

Hi Freddy, Chubb had previously shared that their TravellerShield Plus policy will provide cover for quarantine in hotels (under the Overseas Quarantine Benefit due to Covid-19), if all the conditions below are fulfilled: 1.     The traveller is diagnosed with Covid-19 2.     The overseas destination has no designated quarantine facility for Covid-19 patients 3.     The authorities of the overseas destination requires the traveller to be quarantined in a hotel

Hi Aaron. Thanks for following up on this! Do you know where I can find this in Chubb’s website or somewhere? I can’t find it in the policy wording, at least for the one with DBS. If I buy their insurance and make the claim, I can’t say “Aaron Wong from Milelion told me this”…=)

It’s an official reply from a DBS spokesperson quoting a Chubb spokesperson. but yeah I understand the problem, I will ask if they can put it in black and white on the website.

Possible to overcome the IT constraint of Thailand Pass for this insurance?

Thanks Aaron. Good news for travellers!

So I guess the SIA complimentary travel insurance for PPS members has also been shifted from AIG to Allianz and will their policy conditions for this complimentary insurance be the same as mentioned above?

Lifshitz

There is complimentary travel insurance for PPS? Oddly enough Google doesn’t seem to know that

I was initially not aware either, until SIA Netherlands informed me of that fact. I broke my wrist in 2019 while overseas. AIG complimentary travel insurance which is only applicable to PPS members if you fly on SIA covered all expenses incl quite a generous sum after my return to Singapore.

Jem

Hi Gaby, are you able to provide any link/reference to this policy which covers PPS members for any trips done on SIA flights?

It’s on the SIA PPS portal. It mentions coverage for Overseas Medical and Travel accident insurance. ” provided by AIG. You are covered for accidents and medical emergencies that happen whenever you are in another country”. Then it mentions worldwide emergency assistance underwritten by AXA assistance. Unfortunately can’t attach screenshots.

I just found out that this complimentary AIG travel insurance is only extended to Solitaire members and it is still underwritten by AIG.

K Debay

The other noteworthy difference is Allianz treats all Epidemics and Pandemics the same (not just covid 19) so whether you are infected with Covid, Ebola or a new Epidemic you receive the same coverage. Most insurers have only extended specific to Covid

cheesecake

I’m personally glad that SQ ditched AIG. Previously I had two one-way trips, called up AIG, they said I had to call SQ to “link” the two bookings first, then call AIG back to get their policy because it has to be tagged to only ONE booking reference. I said no, AIG should have a process to cater to two one-ways and not trouble the passenger to make multiple calls between AIG and SQ. Only then they said they can raise internally for an “exception approval” process. Plus their premium was 3X higher than the other insurer I eventually went …  Read more »

One think to point out is SIA-Allianz quarantine allowance (under Trip Interruption) terms are more favourable to the traveler as it provides $150 allowance per day up to 14 days. Whereas the public highest tier platinum policy only provides $500 per day up to 5 days. This is a downer for anyone purchasing the public policy, unless you are certain you can be discharged within 5 days; but there is supposedly the 14 day ICA health declaration issue to contend with (but that’s another matter altogether). Allianz public policy wording Additional accommodation and transportation expenses if the interruption causes you …  Read more »

hey thanks bent, this is useful info! I did not know I could claim the remaining 9 days accomodation under Travel Delay of $1500,SJ albeit very low coverage under the public Allianz policy.

I wonder if Allianz covers Flights in between the journey that are purchased separately (eg. Domestic flights / intra schengen flights). AIG does not cover that and it makes it difficult to justify if we arrange a big trip and it is impossible to combine the flight itinerary with SIA / * Alliance.

Achen

In today’s context, this does not seem to cover accommodation for a case where you cannot return to SG due to testing positive, and where the foreign country does not require you to go into isolation/quarantine.

Hi Aaron, I spoke to Allianz CSO and found a slight error regarding the article’s paragraph on Allianz’s coverage for one way ticket coverage. The policy will only cover 30 days from the departure date (of the first ticket), not up to 180 days. So for example, if my one way ticket to USA is on 1 March, the coverage ends on 1 April. This applies even if my holiday is longer than 30 days or if my hospitalization or quarantine stay is beyond 1 April. This is a significant risk that travellers must be aware of when purchasing via …  Read more »

Thank you Aaron for adding the whole excerpt!

From the way I interpret it, the 30 days limit is an additional limitation for one way ticket trips on top of point 1 to 5. So for my earlier example of 1st March, if I have another one way ticket back to Singapore on 15 April, my trip portion for April 2nd onward would not be covered by the allianz policy bought via sq booking website.

I read elsewhere that Bali does not require mandatory travel insurance – can you clarify or correct that please?

Do I need Travel Insurance for Singapore?

Starting February 13, 2023, visitors to Singapore are no longer mandated to have travel insurance. However, it's highly advised for all travelers to consider obtaining a thorough travel insurance policy that includes coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and delays. Why? There are several reasons:

Singapore, known for its top-notch healthcare, might surprise you with unexpected medical costs. With coverage for emergency medical expenses, you're offered coverage and assistance for any unforeseen life events.

Lost Baggage: Airlines sometimes mishandle baggage, and the last thing you want is to be without your essentials in an unfamiliar place. Travel insurance offers to cover the cost of replacing necessary items, allowing you to continue.

Despite Singapore's efficient travel network, unexpected delays can happen. The "Trip Delay" benefit comes in handy, covering extra expenses like meals and accommodation so your travel hiccups do not turn into headaches.

How much does Travel Insurance cost for Singapore?

In general, travel insurance costs about 3 – 10% of your total prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. The cost of travel insurance depends on two factors for AXA Travel Protection plans:

  • Total Trip cost:  The total non-prepaid and non-refundable costs you have already paid for your upcoming trip. This includes prepaid excursions, plane tickets, cruise costs, etc.
  • Age:  Like any other insurance type, the correlation is rooted in increased health risks associated with older individuals. It's important to note that this doesn't make travel insurance unattainable for older individuals.

With AXA Travel Protection, travelers to Singapore will be offered three tiers of insurance:  Silver,   Gold  and  Platinum . Each provides varying levels of coverage to cater to individual's preferences and travel needs.

Our Suggested AXA Travel Protection Plan

AXA presents travelers with three travel plans – the  Silver Plan ,  Gold Plan , and  Platinum Plan , each offering different levels of coverage to suit individual needs. Given that Singapore hospitals often do not accept U.S. health insurance or Medicare, we genuinely recommend travelers to consider purchasing any of these plans, particularly for the crucial coverage they offer for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses. The Platinum Plan is your go-to choice if you're looking for extra coverage for Singapore’s experience. " Cancel for Any Reason " offers greater flexibility for those unexpected twists in your travel plans and the "Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver)" offers assistance when you're out exploring Singapore's stunning landscapes in a rental car. For avid golfers planning a swing through Singapore’s world-class golf courses, the "Loss Golf Days" benefit is exclusive to Platinum plan policyholders. This optional benefit steps in to offer reimbursement for pre-paid golf arrangements that you might be unable to utilize due to specified golf closures.

What types of medical coverage do AXA Travel Protection plans offer?

AXA covers three types of medical expenses:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Emergency evacuation & repatriation
  • Non-medical emergency evacuation & repatriation

Emergency Medical: Offers coverage when unexpected health issues happen, like broken bones, burns, sudden illnesses, or allergic reactions.

Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Can cover your immediate transportation home in the event of an accidental injury or illness.

Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Comes into play when you urgently need to leave a place for reasons not related to health. This coverage may assist with evacuation in non-medical situations, such as natural disasters or civil unrest.

Singapore Airlines Travel Insurance - 2024 Review

Singapore airlines travel insurance.

Singapore Airlines Travel Insurance

  • Well-Respected Travel Insurance Provider
  • Available At Checkout
  • Low Coverage

Sharing is caring!

Singapore Airlines is the flag carrier airline of Singapore with its hub located at Singapore Changi Airport. Singapore Airlines’ the ‘Singapore Girl’ is their brand figure.

Singapore Airlines Travel Insurance | AARDY.com

We are a huge fan of Singapore Airlines at TripInsure101. Its aircraft are always the most modern, the interiors are beautiful, and the staff go out of their way to be helpful. The on-board experience is second to none. Singapore Airlines continues to be the benchmark that the rest of the aviation world aspires to.

Travel insurance is available at checkout, so let’s book a sample trip, review the insurance offered, then see if we can get a better option in the open marketplace.

Singapore Airlines – Our Sample Trip

For our sample flight, our two travelers are flying from Los Angeles to Singapore on November 30 – December 16. Flights can be sorted by duration, price, arrival time or departure time. Looking at flights for our trip, the least expensive departure is $2539.78, which is the total for both travelers together.

Sample of available flights

Clicking on the fare, opens the details about that fare including penalty fees for cancellation, changes, and no-shows:

Economy Fares

Comparing the two economy selections – Economy Standard and Economy Flex, for an extra $735, we can save $100 on cancellations, $50 for changes if we choose Economy Flex over Economy standard. Remember, this is the same seat. Same food. The exact same entertainment system. The difference is that if a traveler pays an extra $735 then they will pay less penalties. We will show later why it rarely, if ever, makes sense to buy anything other than a non-refundable seat.

After choosing our return flights, we can choose our seats for each leg.

Seat fares

Standard seats are free while extra legroom seats are $120. Final cost of our trip after selecting standard seating is: $5,359.36.

Finally, prior to payment, we’re asked if we’d like to insure our trip:

Allianz insurance

Singapore Airlines’ insurance is provided by Allianz, a well-respected travel insurer. Total cost for the insurance is $415.35.

Unfortunately, the only way to preview the policy is to accept adding it to the trip cost, which then allows us to view the policy details. The policy is called the ‘Global Travel Protector III” and the standard benefits are summarized below:

Sched of benefits

The policy will pay up to 100% of the trip cost if the traveler cancels for a reason listed in the policy such as illness or injury. Trip Interruption will pay the remaining pro-rated portion of the trip up to 100% (depending on how far into the trip before the interruption occurred), and the additional 200% would be to cover additional accommodation fees, reasonable transportation expenses to either continue the trip or return home and additional accommodate expenses if you must stay at your destination for longer than originally planned up to $250/day for a maximum of 5 days.

However, the Allianz policy only provides $50,000 of medical expense coverage and $50,000 of medical evacuation coverage. These amounts are far too low for overseas travel to Southeast Asia. Medical evacuation back to the US can run $25,000 per flight hour or more. With this policy, it would only cover two hours of flight time and the traveler would be responsible for the remaining bill! Not a pleasant thought!

Since the coverage is too low for travel to Singapore, let’s see if we can find a better option in the open marketplace through TripInsure101 .

TripInsure101 – The Travel Insurance Marketplace

TripInsure101 is a travel insurance marketplace. We work with some of the best travel insurers in the industry. Inputting our trip details into the quoting system at TripInsure101, we’re presented with 27 options to choose from.

With so many options, what would be the best policy to choose?

TripInsure101 recommends having a minimum of $100,000 of medical coverage and $500,000 of medical evacuation coverage for travel to Asia and points beyond.

The least expensive plan with adequate medical coverage is the Trawick First Class .

TWK FC

The policy provides $150,000 of medical coverage and $1 million of medical evacuation coverage as well as trip cancellation, trip interruption, and baggage coverage. If we need to cancel prior to departure for a reason listed in the policy, such as illness or injury, we will receive a 100% refund of our trip costs. Best of all, the premium is $318.88, which is $96.47 LESS than the Allianz policy and provides three times the medical coverage and twenty times the medical evacuation coverage!

But what if we want maximum flexibility to cancel for ANY reason and not just for a listed reason? Do we have any options?

The answer is YES! A Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) policy. Let’s take a look.

Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) Policies

For maximum cancellation flexibility, a Cancel for Any Reason  (CFAR) policy is a great option.

This is a super-powerful benefit that does exactly what it says. A traveler needs to have no reason at all to cancel and still receive a significant refund. The policies that we have can provide either a 50% or a 75% refund depending on the policy chosen.

Looking at our quote from TripInsure101, the least expensive CFAR policy with adequate coverage is the Trawick First Class (CFAR 75%). This policy provides the same benefits we saw above and adds the Cancel For Any Reason benefit if we purchase the policy within 10 days of the initial trip payment or deposit date. Total cost for both travelers combined is $542.10.

TWK FC CFAR

If we had to cancel for a listed reason in the policy such as an illness, we’d receive 100% of the non-refundable trip cost. However, if we cancel for a reason NOT listed in the policy, such as simply deciding we don’t want to go, the policy will refund us 75% of the trip cost. While $126.75 more than the Allianz policy, we get maximum cancellation flexibility as well as three times the medical coverage and twenty times the medical evacuation coverage.

Buying a non-refundable ticket and purchasing a Cancel For Any Reason policy has been called the  TripInsure101 Flight Hack .

You will get nearly the same flexibility as a refundable ticket, plus a comprehensive insurance plan, and save hundreds of dollars on your flights. Refundable benefits, with non-refundable tickets!

Ensure to insure: Which travel insurance policies provide Covid-19 coverage?

travel insurance with singapore airlines

SINGAPORE - With the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) agreements paving the way for two-way quarantine-free travel, stir-crazy Singaporeans are dusting off their passports and making up for lost time.

But travel during a global pandemic is fraught with uncertainty, and if travel insurance was a good idea pre-Covid-19, it is practically essential now. In fact, it is literally essential for certain VTL countries such as Malaysia and South Korea, which require foreigners to purchase travel insurance with Covid-19 medical expense coverage as a condition of entry.

Fortunately, the majority of travel insurers now provide Covid-19 coverage, either integrated into the main policy or as an add-on rider.

It is not going to burn a hole in your pocket either. With the various ongoing promotions, coverage can be had for less than $10 a day (see chart on Sample Coverage Of Covid-19 Travel Insurance Policies).

What you need to be covered for

Medical expenses.

Assuming you are vaccinated and in good health, any Covid-19 infection should be fairly mild.

However, it is still important to have coverage for Covid-19 medical expenses, whether it is as simple as an outpatient consultation with a doctor or as serious as admission to hospital.

Moreover, some VTL countries require foreigners to buy travel insurance with a specified minimum coverage for Covid-19 medical treatment. You will usually need to present your insurance certificate before boarding the flight.

Emergency medical evacuation

In the event that you contract Covid-19 and your situation deteriorates, doctors may decide that evacuation to Singapore for further treatment is necessary.

This can be a very expensive process. According to examples from insurance company Chubb, medical evacuation via air ambulance can cost upwards of US$100,000 (S$136,700). You will want to ensure your travel policy has adequate coverage in this area.

When choosing your policy, make sure it provides separate coverage for medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation.

For example, MSIG TravelEasy (Standard) provides $65,000 of combined coverage for overseas medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation.

Allianz Travel Insurance (Bronze) provides $1 million of coverage for medical expenses and a separate $1 million of coverage for emergency medical evacuation.

If your situation is serious enough to warrant repatriation to Singapore, you may well have incurred significant overseas medical expenses already, so it is vital you have something left over to cover the evacuation.

Quarantine allowance

If you receive a positive Covid-19 result while overseas and are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, the standard procedure in most VTL countries is to self-isolate in a hotel.

The two situations where travellers are most likely to receive a positive Covid-19 result while overseas are:

  • Upon arrival overseas: Assuming the country requires a further Covid-19 test on arrival (most European countries and the United States do not); and
  • Pre-departure to Singapore: All VTL travellers to Singapore must take a Covid-19 antigen rapid test/polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test within two days of departure.

Getting a positive result on arrival is not a great way to start your vacation, but is unlikely to incur much incremental accommodation costs because you can use the hotel already booked for isolation. However, getting a positive result on your pre-departure test could be expensive because you need to book additional accommodation beyond your originally envisioned return date, as you wait for the all-clear.

A quarantine allowance helps defray some of the additional expenses involved. While most policies offer $50 a day, you are strongly advised to top up a little extra for a policy with $100 a day, to cover the cost of a decent hotel. Also, check how many days of quarantine are covered - some policies offer seven days, others 14 days.

Note that quarantine allowances do not cover situations where quarantine is a published requirement for travel. For example, Singapore residents travelling to Indonesia must undergo a 10-day quarantine on arrival . No claims will be allowed in this respect (travel insurance is meant to cover the possibilities, not the certainties).

There is one thing the quarantine allowance will not cover.

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority has a policy that says travellers who have been diagnosed with Covid-19 in the last 14 days should not travel to Singapore.

Suppose your pre-departure test in Germany is positive and you are issued a seven-day self-isolation order. After seven days, you clear a Covid-19 PCR test and are released.

You can claim a quarantine allowance for the seven-day period indicated on the self-isolation order, but not the additional seven days you need to wait in Germany before returning to Singapore.

Trip cancellation

Many VTL countries require a pre-departure test before leaving Singapore. Should your result come back positive, you will almost certainly need to cancel your trip.

Trip cancellation protection offers reimbursement for forfeiture of deposits or charges that are unrecoverable - for example, flights, hotels and tickets to attractions.

The emphasis is on the word "unrecoverable". You will usually be required to submit proof that you contacted the merchant to request a refund and were denied. If the merchant agrees to refund you a portion of your costs, that portion is not recoverable from your travel insurer.

travel insurance with singapore airlines

But trip cancellation does not cover situations where you get spooked out of travelling because of quarantine requirements or travel advisories.

Certain travel insurance policies may also provide coverage for trip postponement which, as the name suggests, covers the costs incurred in postponing your trip as opposed to cancelling it.

What you should know about Covid-19 coverage

Coverage applies to overseas expenses.

With the exception of trip cancellation or postponement, travel insurance is generally meant to cover you for things that happen outside of Singapore.

In other words, if you require overseas medical treatment for a Covid-19 infection diagnosed in Britain, you can file a claim with your travel insurer.

But if you are diagnosed with Covid-19 after returning to Singapore from Britain, you need to file a claim with your regular health insurance provider for medical treatment received in Singapore.

While the Singapore Government is currently picking up the tab for Covid-19 medical bills for fully vaccinated Singaporeans, permanent residents and long-term pass holders, an exception applies to those who test positive for Covid-19 within 14 days of their arrival in Singapore.

However, these individuals will still be able to tap government subsidies and insurance coverage where applicable. According to the Ministry of Health, the median acute hospital bill for patients who end up in the intensive care unit and require Covid-19 therapeutics is $25,000, although means-tested government subsidies and MediShield Life coverage can reduce the bill to about $2,000 to $4,000 for eligible Singaporeans in subsidised wards.

Covid-19 coverage will be less than general coverage

While travel insurance policies may offer very generous coverage of overseas medical expenses, Covid-19 treatment is usually a much smaller amount.

For example, AXA SmartTraveller offers up to $600,000 of overseas medical expenses, but only up to $150,000 for those specifically related to Covid-19.

I can only surmise that it is because Covid-19 is a relatively novel disease and underwriters prefer to err on the side of caution by limiting their liability.

Mandatory quarantine is not grounds for cancellation

If there is one thing the Omicron variant has done, it is remind people that border restrictions and quarantine requirements are liable to change at short notice.

In recent weeks, for example, Sydney and Melbourne have imposed 72-hour quarantine for all international arrivals, and India reinstated seven-day home quarantine for travellers from Singapore. While both these measures have since been lifted, they are reminders of how fast things can change.

As inconvenient as these things may be, changing regulations, government advisories against travel and border closures are generally not grounds to claim trip cancellation.

Most policies will cover only trip cancellation if you, a travelling companion or family member test positive for Covid-19 prior to departure.

To put it another way, while it is unfortunate you need to spend precious overseas time in quarantine, that is not really the insurer's concern.

If you want a policy that covers such situations, you might want to consider Aviva's travel insurance and its "cancel for any reason" clause.

This covers 50 per cent of your unrecoverable travel and entertainment costs (capped at $5,000) should you decide not to travel, claimable a maximum of once per period of insurance (that is, annual policy-holders can use it only once).

Travel insurance policies with Covid-19 coverage

Travel insurance policies have different tiers and coverage. The chart, Illustrative Pricing For Travel Insurance Policies, uses a seven-day trip to South Korea as the basis for comparison.

My advice would be to look for an insurer that provides coverage for all four areas discussed previously (some policies do not provide quarantine allowance).

Generally, there is no harm in purchasing travel insurance well in advance of your trip, since you are charged only for the days overseas.

For example, an insurance company charges the same for a seven-day trip to South Korea whether you buy it the day before departure or a month in advance. But buying it earlier means you will be covered for specified events that occur in the pre-departure period, such as a positive Covid-19 diagnosis.

Should you eventually decide not to travel, most Singapore-based insurers allow you to cancel and refund your policy, provided no claims have been made. Some may charge an administrative fee.

Other travel insurance options

From airlines.

Instead of purchasing travel insurance from a bank or underwriter directly, passengers flying on certain airlines can purchase or enjoy complimentary travel insurance with Covid-19 coverage.

For example, passengers flying with Singapore Airlines can purchase a policy underwritten by Allianz, which provides up to $1 million of overseas Covid-19 medical expense coverage and trip interruption coverage of up to $150 a day that would cover additional costs incurred due to quarantine.

travel insurance with singapore airlines

Likewise, those flying with Scoot can buy a policy underwritten by AXA with $10,000 of overseas Covid-19 medical expense coverage and a daily quarantine allowance of $100. But do note that the relatively low medical coverage will make this unsuitable for certain VTL countries such as Malaysia or Thailand.

Passengers flying on Cathay Pacific, Emirates and Etihad will also enjoy complimentary Covid-19 medical insurance, with no action needed from them.

From overseas

Travellers can also consider purchasing insurance from overseas companies such as SafetyWing and World Nomads. These policies provide coverage for Singapore residents and may be more cost- effective in certain scenarios.

However, it is important to read up on both the seller and underwriter, since you will not have access to mediation bodies like FIDReC in the event of a dispute.

In a nutshell

Remember that travel insurance provides no coverage should your trip be impacted by new quarantine requirements and even border closures. Likewise, there is no coverage against a disinclination to travel, so if you are still on the fence, it is a good idea to hold your fire on any non-refundable bookings.

Venturing overseas without travel insurance was always a foolhardy endeavour prior to Covid-19 and to do so now is borderline insanity.

Do not pinch pennies when it comes to protection - no one ever enjoyed a mai tai on the beach while looking over his or her shoulder.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for Singapore?

As of February 2023, Singapore has eased up on COVID-19-related travel insurance requirements. Visitors are no longer required to obtain travel insurance before entering the country, but the government still highly recommends it.

In case things go wrong, having travel insurance coverage can provide an added layer of security. A comprehensive travel insurance plan may cover emergency medical expenses and assistance, lost or delayed baggage, unexpected trip cancellations and flight delays.

Singapore is known for outdoor adventure activities like kayaking, scuba diving and hiking — and travel insurance can offer peace of mind when you’re exploring the great outdoors. Most plans include emergency medical coverage if you sustain injuries while traveling, and some policies offer protection for sporting gear.

But every traveler is unique and will require different coverage. Whether you’re an adventure aficionado or a business traveler, there’s an insurance plan that’s right for you. Here are the most common travel insurance coverages:

Cancel for Any Reason Coverage

Cancel for any reason coverage , also known as CFAR, allows you to claim reimbursement if you cancel your trip for reasons not listed in your insurance policy. CFAR coverage is advantageous for travelers who might need to cancel their trip for unconventional reasons.

When compared to standard travel insurance, CFAR coverage is more flexible. However, it can be more costly and doesn’t always cover you completely. There are a handful of rules to qualify for coverage, including:

  • You may have to cancel at least 48 hours before your departure date.
  • You need to buy CFAR coverage within a certain number of days after booking your trip.

Gear Theft Protection

Singapore has some of the highest safety rankings in the world . Nevertheless, backing yourself with gear theft protection can still be a wise choice, especially if you’re traveling with valuable personal belongings, travel documents and credit cards.

Travel insurance can help cover you in case your items are lost, damaged or stolen. Although travel insurance policies include predetermined cost limitations and exclusions, coverage is worth considering if you wish to bring the following:

  • A laptop, tablet or smartphone
  • Professional camera and equipment
  • Sports equipment (like a kayak)

Note that, due to sub-limits on some policies, your policy may not cover the full value of your items. Review your policy documents, including the product disclosure statement, to ensure you are protected. If not, you may want to consider leaving some of your more valuable items at home.

Medical Emergency Insurance and Emergency Medical Evacuation

If you encounter health complications during your trip, having travel insurance with medical emergencies and evacuation coverage can make a big difference.

In Singapore, the smog and tropical heat may negatively affect some travelers . Be sure to declare any pre-existing medical conditions like high blood pressure, asthma or skin conditions when booking your trip insurance.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies can cover a variety of scenarios, from viral outbreaks to unforeseen medical treatments. Keep in mind that your U.S. health insurance card may not provide coverage abroad, even if you have a private plan. If things go awry, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you have medical protection with travel insurance.

For medical emergency coverage, a standard travel insurance policy may include:

  • Hospital admission fees
  • Operations and operating room fees
  • Ambulance fees
  • X-rays and lab tests
  • Dental costs

Travel insurance companies also usually include coverage for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation. In recent years following the pandemic, medical insurance has become a consideration for many American travelers.

Some companies also offer medical coverage for sports and adventure enthusiasts. Overseas medical expenses and treatments can add up, especially if you’re into extreme sports.

Rental Car Protection

Singapore requires car rental companies to have insurance . In most cases, rental car insurance in Singapore covers the vehicle in the event of traffic accidents. Most car rental companies opt for a basic collision damage waiver coverage that comes with limitations. Two important factors to look out for include:

  • Most car rental companies will choose to opt for a higher excess, or what you will have to pay when making a claim.
  • The majority of companies will only cover car use in Singapore.

Check your insurance policy before driving a Singapore rental car into other countries. For example, you may not have coverage if you drive a vehicle from Singapore to places like Hong Kong, Brunei, Cambodia or Malaysia.

If you’re traveling to Singapore and planning to rent a car, you can also purchase travel insurance with rental car coverage for extra protection. Some types of rental car coverage include:

  • Collision damage waiver
  • Theft protection
  • Third-party liability
  • Personal accident insurance

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you in the event of unforeseen circumstances while traveling. This type of travel insurance covers cancellations for the following reasons:

  • Death of a traveling companion or immediate family member
  • Diagnosis of a serious medical condition or injury
  • Natural disasters or dangerous weather conditions
  • Domestic or international acts of terrorism
  • Legal obligations like jury duty

Trip cancellation insurance is mostly limited to the above reasons. For more flexibility, it’s best to opt for CFAR coverage.

How Much Does Singapore Travel Insurance Cost?

The cost of travel insurance can vary depending on your coverage preferences, age and desired destination. Whether you’re searching for single-trip plans or annual multi-trip coverage, there are multiple providers to consider. And if you are on a budget, cheap travel insurance options are available.

To receive a quote from a travel insurance provider, you’ll be required to submit the following information:

  • Destination country
  • Your home location
  • Age group and the number of travelers
  • Total trip price

To offer insight into typical costs, we gathered quotes from five different travel insurance providers. We based the following prices on a 30-year-old traveler from California to Singapore for two weeks, with a total trip cost of $4,000.

*Note: We collected the above quotes from each company’s website in May 2023. Plans include coverage for trip cancellation, trip interruption, medical emergencies and baggage delay or loss.

How Do I Get Travel Insurance for Singapore?

There are a few things to consider before purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Singapore. First, it’s worth seeing if your current health insurance plan or credit card offers any overseas coverage. We also recommend you check to see if your health insurance extends to medical emergencies abroad.

Compare various insurance options and consider factors like COVID-19 coverage, medical expenses, emergency assistance, trip cancellation and travel delays. For example, most major airlines offer travel insurance when booking flights, but coverage may not include specific medical emergencies.

Remember, full reimbursement isn’t always guaranteed, so carefully review policy wording and disclaimers. Familiarize yourself with coverage exclusions and consider add-ons to enhance your travel insurance coverage.

Singapore Safety Tips

Singapore is considered one of the safest countries for travel . Whether you are traversing this modern, metropolitan city-state as an experienced traveler or a first-timer, here are some things to take into account:

Crime and Safety

Crime rates are relatively low in Singapore. However, petty crime can still happen in major tourist areas, hotel lobbies, airports and public transportation facilities. Keep an eye out for pickpocketing and theft and, if possible, keep your valuables stored in locked safes when not in use.

Day Trips, Tours and Excursions

There are plenty of options for travel from Singapore, whether you are planning a day trip to Malaysia or a longer stay in Indonesia or Thailand. If you’re planning an active activity, make sure your travel insurance plan covers medical expenses and emergency assistance.

As of February 2023, the Singapore government has lifted all restrictions regarding COVID-19 .

The country does not require COVID-19 coverage and vaccinations for international air travelers. You also do not need to show a vaccine passport to return to the U.S.

In case of an emergency when traveling in Singapore, call the U.S. Embassy hotline at +(65) 6476-9100.

Is Travel Insurance for a Singapore Vacation Worth It?

Although travel insurance for a Singapore vacation is not mandatory, it comes with many benefits. Standard insurance may cover you for lost baggage, medical emergencies, flight postponements or other travel inconveniences. Or you can opt for more comprehensive coverage, which could include protection for valuable items like cameras and sporting gear.

Travel insurance can also offer peace of mind if you have to cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances. Plus, there are many add-on options to improve your travel insurance coverage — like CFAR or rental car coverage.

Ultimately, it’s up to you if travel insurance is worth it for a vacation to Singapore. We recommend comparing quotes and general information from at least three travel insurance companies before purchasing a policy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance in Singapore

How can i claim flight compensation.

The U.S. does not always require airlines to compensate you for delayed or canceled flights. Most major airlines have limitations that only allow refunds if cancellations are the airline’s fault or due to overbooking. However, travel insurance offers reimbursement for nonrefundable costs, such as airline tickets, for certain trip cancellations.

Do you need travel insurance for Singapore?

You are not required to have travel insurance to enter Singapore. But purchasing travel insurance can offer policyholders peace of mind in knowing their trip is protected against unexpected events.

Do tourists get free health care in Singapore?

Travelers do not receive free health care in Singapore. But medical expenses can add up if you need treatment while abroad. Travel insurance can help cover emergency medical expenses while in Singapore. Or you can check to see if your health care extends to emergency care while traveling.

Can I buy travel insurance after I depart for Singapore?

No. To claim reimbursement, you need to purchase travel insurance before your departure date.

Your questions answered

(Applicable for Elite and Classic single trip 2-way plans and annual multi-trip plans, each trip must not exceed 90 days.)

If you are purchasing a new policy, we have extended the TravelSmart Premier policy to cover certain situations pertaining to COVID-19. This means that for some benefits, cover is expanded to include losses occurring after COVID-19 was a known event and could reasonably have been expected to lead to a claim. For a detailed summary of what is covered or not covered for COVID-19, please refer to the policy wording.

Before purchasing the policy, please note that: • Your Trip is under the latest permitted travel arrangement as per Singapore Government travel advisory. • For single-trip policies and annual multi-trip policies, the extension only applies if the trip is no longer than 90 days in a row. • The extension is applicable to Elite and Classic plans only. • You are not serving stay home notice or quarantined due to COVID-19 or traveled to any countries other than the list of countries permitted as per Singapore Government travel advisory within 14 days before your trip started. • If required by authorities, you must take a COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test or any COVID-19 equivalent test approved by Singapore authorities within 72 hours before the start of your trip and you must be tested negative. Otherwise, there is no cover under section 38a - Medical expenses while overseas, section 38b - Emergency medical evacuation, section 38c - Repatriation, section 38g - Automatic extension of cover, section 38h – Overseas quarantine allowance and section 38i - Overseas hospital allowance of this extension. • We will not cover if you, a relative, or a travel companion is diagnosed (or suspected of being infected) with Covid-19 at the point of purchase of this policy or trip.

Q16: What is the difference between TravelSmart Premier Basic, Classic and Elite Plans?

For Annual Multi-Trip Policies, Family means: • An adult and/or his/her spouse and unlimited number of biological or legally adopted children; and • The insured persons under the family cover are not required to travel together on a journey. However, child insured person under the age of ten (10) years must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian for any trip made during the period of insurance.

Q18: What do I indicate as the Period of Insurance?

You will need to indicate the start date and end date of your trip for the Period of Insurance. The start and end date will be based on Singapore time. • Start date: The date you are departing from Singapore (e.g. If you are departing from Singapore on 04 Dec 2020 23:50, you should indicate the Start Date as 04 Dec 2020). • End date: The date you are arriving in Singapore (e.g. If you are arriving in Singapore on 05 Dec 2020 00:30, you should indicate the End Date as 05 Dec 2020).

Q19: Can I purchase TravelSmart Premier for my child who is traveling on a student exchange program or field trip?

Yes, child below 18 years old can apply for any plans under an individual cover, provided the proposal is made in the parent or adult guardian's name. Child below 10 years old must be accompanied by an adult (parent or guardian) for the entire trip. Please note that child benefits apply.

Q20: Can I purchase travel insurance if I am already overseas?

No, you will need to purchase your travel insurance before setting off for your overseas trip from Singapore. We strongly encourage you to purchase early before departure as our travel insurance provides pre-journey coverage as well.

Q21: If I have pre-existing illness, can I still purchase travel insurance?

Yes, you may still buy the policy. However, please note that the policy does not cover any loss, damage or liability directly or indirectly arising as a result of any pre-existing medical condition. For more information, please refer to your policy documents.

Q22: I will be travelling to more than two countries and will be back to Singapore before flying to the next country (e.g. Singapore > Bangkok > Singapore > Seoul> Singapore). Can I purchase one single trip policy for the entire journey in this case?

Sounds like a great trip! In this case, you will need to buy 2 separate single trip policies because the coverage for a single trip policy ends when you return to Singapore. Alternatively if you travel more than 3 times a year, an annual policy would be recommended as your insurance costs will be considerably cheaper compared to buying a single trip travel policy each and every time.

Q23: I’m travelling to more than one country during my trip. Can I still get a policy?

Yes, please select all destinations on your itinerary.

Q24: If I am travelling overseas to seek medical treatment, can I take up travel insurance?

Our policy covers people who are travelling overseas for business or for holiday. It is not intended to cover people who are travelling to seek medical treatment.

Q25: If I am only travelling one-way, will I be able to purchase travel insurance?

Yes, please select one-way trip. Your cover will cease when you arrive at your place of residence or workplace in the destination country within 4 days, or 3 hours after you have cleared immigration in the destination country, whichever is earlier.

Travel Insurance Singapore: Is It Necessary To Buy Travel Insurance?

joannepoh

Travel insurance sounds like something meant to fleece kiasi people of their hard-earned cash. Many of us pay for travel insurance before we get on that plane. But why don’t we buy travel insurance when we go to JB or Malaysia for a massage?

Heck, you’re more likely to get into an accident dodging angry drivers on the AYE or PIE than strolling the streets of Tokyo or Paris. In addition, if you have a medical insurance policy here in Singapore, you might recall your agent having told you something about being able to make claims for overseas medical costs.

For every cautious, over-insured traveller you’ll meet, you’ll find a footloose and fancy free backpacker who “don’t believe” in insurance. So, is it necessary to buy travel insurance?

  • Travel insurance covers emergency situations
  • Travel insurance covers pre-trip emergencies
  • Regular health insurance doesn’t fully cover travels
  • Travel insurance isn’t cheap
  • I’m travelling on budget, I don’t need travel insurance
  • What could possibly happen? I don’t need travel insurance
  • I still refuse to buy travel insurance
  • Get cheaper travel insurance with promos

1. Travel insurance covers emergency situations

Most people don’t think twice about what goes into that plate of char kuay teow . Neither do they think about what they’re actually paying for when they buy travel insurance.

Here are some of the basic coverage you’ll be able get from most travel insurance plans.

Overseas emergency medical costs

One of the biggest reasons to buy travel insurance is because it protects you if you need to seek urgent medical help when on holiday.  Singaporeans seem to have the habit of getting into road accidents overseas , which is understandable considering so many of us have driver’s licences we never get to use because of COE. Then there’s the risk of getting food poisoning after stuffing your face at one too many hotel breakfast buffets, or walking into a wall and breaking a tooth.

Your medical coverage usually lets you make claims for medical or dental costs incurred, medical evacuation and/or expatriation if you need to be rushed back to Singapore, hospital cash benefits and more.

You are also usually allowed to make claims for medical expenses incurred upon your return to Singapore if they are due to an illness or accident sustained while overseas.

Personal accident and death

We’re not trying to be pessimistic, but there is always the chance your trip will end in disaster. Travel insurance policies have a personal accident component, which will offer you payouts if you get into an accident and as a result are temporarily or permanently disabled, or die (in which case the money goes to your family or whomever you’ve willed your estate to).

Your policy will indicate a lump sum to be paid out if one of the above catastrophes takes place, and the percentage of this lump sum you’ll receive.

A typical sum in a standard plan might be $150,000. If you die or are totally and permanently disabled, your or your family might receive 100% of the sum, while losing one limb might entitle you to just 50%.

Travel inconveniences

Unless you’re really unlucky, you will not exactly be using our medical or personal accident coverage on every trip. But if you’re a frequent traveller, sooner or later you’re going to have a chance to make a claim for travel-related mishaps and disruptions.

Cancellations, delays or missed connections can allow you to make claims, not only for planes but also for train and bus rides. Obviously, your alarm not going off is not a good enough excuse—you’ll have to demonstrate the disruption was caused by an illness, injury, death in the family or an event like a natural disaster or civil disturbance.

Baggage delays can also entitle you to claim money. How much you get typically depends on how many hours your baggage is delayed by.

In principle, you are also entitled to claim money for lost or damaged items. However, be warned that it can be tricky to actually get your money in such situations, as you are generally required to make a police report at your destination, and in many countries, the police might not be willing to issue reports for something as trivial as a lost iPhone.

In addition, there are pretty tight limits for each category of items. So don’t wear your diamond-encrusted Rolex watch on your trip if your limit for watches is only $200.

In a nutshell, travel insurance should cover you for…

  • medical costs incurred overseas and upon your return, including hospital stays
  • costs of evacuation and repatriation if you need to be sent back to Singapore
  • compensation for travel delays or disruptions that aren’t your fault
  • compensation for cancellation of your trip
  • compensation for delayed luggage
  • compensation for loss of personal belongings or money, including lost luggage and passports

Unfortunately, you probably won’t be allowed to make claims for millions if you decide to see some celebrity doctor. Insurance companies usually require you to seek treatment from one of their approved doctors and hospitals, and there are limits on how much you can claim. So, make sure you don’t take liberties when incurring costs.

2. Travel insurance also covers pre-trip emergencies

Most people have no idea what travel insurance actually covers when they book it, which also means they might miss out on making claims they’re actually entitled to.

You’re covered by travel insurance from the minute you book your policy until you arrive at home and have collected all your belongings.

This means that if anything happens to prevent you from going on your trip after you’ve booked the tickets, you might be able to claim compensation.

You are obviously covered as you travel from Singapore to your destination.

But the protection continues in some ways after you land in Singapore at the end of your vacation as well. If your luggage gets lost on the way back, despite the fact that you can very easily just go back home where you have all your clothes and necessities waiting for you, you can still get compensation for the delay if it’s long enough.

3. Regular health insurance doesn’t fully cover travels

For many people, it’s the medical component of the travel insurance policy that they’re the most concerned about. Sure, it might be annoying to have to wait for a delayed flight or have your luggage delayed, but neither of them is going to bankrupt you.

And if you already spent one entire afternoon with your insurance agent trying to pick a medical insurance policy, why do you still need travel insurance?

If you have a medical insurance policy, it’s likely you’ll be able to make some claims for medical expenses incurred overseas. But you’ll have noticed that your existing policy contains some gaps that will end up in your having to fork out money.

If your medical insurance policy covers you only if you stay at least one night in a hospital, you might be out of luck if you have to see a doctor for emergency treatment that doesn’t warrant a hospital stay. For instance, while you might just stay home for a few days to recuperate back in Singapore, having a fever can wreck your entire holiday if you don’t see a doctor for medication.

Furthermore, while a visit to the polyclinic in Singapore might cost just $10, without the time to rely on an overburdened healthcare system overseas, you might find yourself paying top dollar for private healthcare.

If you are travelling to a remote area, falling sick or getting into an accident may mean being evacuated by helicopter or something similarly dramatic, or even flown back to Singapore. The cost of evacuation and repatriation is often not covered by traditional health insurance plans.

Basically, the crux is that there are certain things travel insurance covers that medical insurance doesn’t. And while the likelihood of these things happening is very remote, the costs can be insane.

4. Travel insurance isn’t cheap

Travel insurance in Singapore mostly automatically Covid-19 coverage these days. And that could only mean one thing – travel insurance is more expensive these days, post-Covid.

Here is a summary table of popular travel insurance plans’ premiums these days:

5. I’m travelling on budget, I don’t need travel insurance

When the travel bug bites but you’re so broke you need to take the MRT to Changi Airport the night before to catch your 5am flight, it’s tempting to travel in extreme budget mode.

Some of your extreme budgeting measures might include staying in hostels infested with sweaty, hormonal teenagers, treating convenience stores like restaurants, trying to trick the museum staff into thinking you’re young enough to receive the student discount and going without travel insurance.

All of the above are pretty much harmless except that last option.

The trouble is that, 9 times out of 10, skipping travel insurance seems like the easiest way to save money because, unlike swatting away a cockroach in your 1-star hotel room, you don’t actually feel any difference—until you need it and it’s too late.

6. What could possibly happen? I don’t need travel insurance

Have you ever wondered what could possibly happen if you didn’t buy travel insurance? Would you suddenly be able to see ghosts or would the world become bathed in psychedelic colours?

Well to be honest, most of the time, nothing will happen. But if you’re really unlucky, here are five situations that will have you shaking your fist at the sky:

Delayed or lost luggage

You might have painstakingly packed the chicest outfits you own for your debut on the streets of Paris, but all of that goes to the dogs if your luggage gets delayed or, worse, lost.

Sure, it’s not a life or death situation, but when you’re stuck in a foreign destination with only one set of underwear, it’s going to feel like the end of the world. Especially when you consider that insurance payouts for delayed baggage can be quite generous.

A few years back, my luggage got delayed by half a day when I was on the way back to Singapore. It was no biggie to me, since I had everything I needed at home anyway.

But thanks to my travel insurance, I got somewhere in the region of $500. I would have kicked myself for not buying insurance purely because I would have lost the chance to earn $500 for doing absolutely nothing.

Dental emergency

If you come down with the flu, a bit of downtime at the hotel can be the best cure. But when it comes to dental emergencies, whether you’re suffering from a broken tooth or a toothache, not seeing a dentist asap could either mean ruining your trip completely or looking like crap in all your holiday photos.

Every time I fly to another country, I always buy travel insurance. Except this one time when I was in Jakarta and I walked into a glass panel and chipped a tooth (true story, unfortunately).

Don’t ask me how it’s possible but between getting my leave approved and packing for a last minute trip, I completely forgot to buy insurance That. One. Time.

It wasn’t a serious accident so I waited till I was back in Singapore two days later to visit the dentist. It cost me $200 to get the tooth filled, money that I could have claimed from the insurance company if only I’d remembered to buy insurance. I’m still kicking myself because I’ve been buying travel insurance for years but the one time I forgot I could actually have used it.

Missing your connecting flight

If you’re a frugal traveller, I’m willing to bet you’ve found yourself trying to sleep at an airport at least once in your life thanks to the inconvenient layover on the discount air ticket you booked. It’s not fun.

Miss your connecting flight due to a prior delayed flight and your holiday might turn into a nightmare at the airport.

You can get quite a generous sum of money for suffering a missed connecting flight. The travel insurance company will usually cover the cost of accommodation and meals as you await the next available flight. This can add up to a few hundred dollars.

Sure, it’s not a matter of life and death. But when your fellow passengers are checking into a cushy hotel for the night and you’re stuck trying to make a bed out of the cold, hard airport floor, don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Getting pickpocketed

If you aren’t exactly the most street-smart of travellers, you might need travel insurance in case you get robbed or pickpocketed.

About a decade ago, I went to Spain with three friends. As four clueless Singaporean teenagers running around excitedly, we were sitting ducks. One friend got pickpocketed within 5 seconds of arriving in Madrid, the other lost a few hundred Euro thanks to a wily conman masquerading as a police officer.

Travel insurance usually covers you for theft, not only of money or personal belongings but also travel documents such as passports. It’s especially important that you be insured for loss of your passport, as it can cost a lot of money and extra hotel stays to get a new one.

Medical emergency

Perhaps, the biggest “ what ifs ” of all is this – overseas medical emergency. I’ve known of a friend of friend who got diagnosed with terminal cancer while travelling abroad. She was deemed unfit to fly and was stuck overseas. The only way the hospital allowed her to fly was via emergency medical evacuation – with doctors and equipment all that brought up with her in the skies.

How I knew? The entire circle of friends were spamming crowd funding fundraiser links all over social media. Then, I got to know the quoted medical evacuation bill was $200k and upwards. If she can’t fly, she can’t afford treatment there either. She can’t even make her way back to Singapore if she (touch wood) prefers to pass on at home.

That story will forever be etched in my head. Buy travel insurance with overseas medical expenses coverage and emergency medical evacuation.

7. I still refuse to buy travel insurance, how?

It’s ok if you don’t believe in travel insurance, really. Your money is yours and no one can tell you what to do with it.

In the event if you’re travelling without travel insurance, here are some travel tips we have:

  •  Avoid check-in luggage:  Don’t pack any check-in luggage! No luggage, no stress. Instead, put everything you feel you need into your carry-on bag. Only the essentials, and never let that bag out of your sight. Buy whatever non-essentials you didn’t bring at your destination.
  • Arrive at the airport a couple of hours early before your flight:  Reach the airport early before you’re scheduled to fly off. That way, you’ll have more than enough time to book an alternative flight or consider other options as soon as you find out that your original flight is delayed or cancelled.

That’s all, really. Medical emergencies and accidents? Pray.

8. Get cheaper travel insurance with promotions

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. This means that if you don’t want to pay too much, you can opt for a more basic plan that costs less. This means the maximum amounts you can claim in each category will be lower. You also won’t receive coverage in certain areas such as pre-existing health conditions.

Otherwise, always seek out promo codes and existing travel insurance promotions before you click “Buy”. These travel insurance promos usually run throughout the year. You’ll always find a pretty good 30% or 40% discount off premiums.

Getting travel insurance for a week long trip costs the same amount as one or two touristy souvenir t-shirts. And you’ll probably look better without the t-shirts anyway.
