A cruise ship with 800 covid cases docks in Sydney

cruise ship with covid in sydney

An earlier version of this story said the Ruby Princess cruise ship is owned by Carnival Cruise Line. The ship is owned by the Carnival Corporation. The story has been corrected.

A cruise ship carrying some 800 people who have tested positive for the coronavirus docked in downtown Sydney on Saturday, triggering memories of a deadly ship-related outbreak in Australia’s largest city in the early, pre-vaccine days of the pandemic.

The Majestic Princess, which returned from New Zealand, is carrying more than 4,000 people, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corp (ABC). Princess Cruises, the cruise line, said in a statement that all guests onboard took a rapid antigen test within 24 hours of disembarking and that passengers who had tested positive would exit separately and not take public transport. Australia no longer requires people who have tested positive for the virus to isolate, though local authorities have issued guidance that covid patients onboard ships should isolate for five days after testing positive.

“Our onboard medical team will continue to support guests until they disembark,” Princess Cruises said in a statement. It did not respond to a question about whether customers who had tested positive could isolate onboard until they recovered, though the company said it would help guests access accommodation for isolation. The Majestic Princess was scheduled to soon sail to Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city.

The health department of New South Wales, the state in which Sydney is located, said in a separate statement that patients had been isolating onboard. State authorities said that there was a “Tier 3” covid risk level aboard the Majestic Princess, indicating a “high level of transmission.”

Cruise ships have been a potent incubator for the coronavirus. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention monitored such ships for transmission at sea for about two years ; it also warned against cruise travel amid the omicron spike during last year’s holiday season. The CDC still recommends getting vaccinated and taking a coronavirus test before boarding a cruise ship.

In early 2020, Carnival Corporation’s Ruby Princess allowed thousands of passengers to disembark in Sydney, placing the cruise ship at the center of one of Australia’s largest covid outbreaks. At least 28 people died and 700 cases were linked to the ship, according to the ABC . Another Carnival ship, the Diamond Princess , also logged 12 Covid-related fatalities earlier that year, including the first Australian national to die of the virus.

But the country has since lifted coronavirus restrictions on international travel: Proof of vaccination or a negative coronavirus test are no longer required for entry, and mask-wearing on international flights is encouraged but not mandatory, according to Australia’s Department of Health and Aged Care.

The absence of restrictions is a far cry from how Australia first handled the pandemic. Sydney, the commercial capital, enacted a 106-day lockdown in 2021, while Melbourne endured the world’s longest stay-at-home lockdown. Australia also closed its borders to nearly all international travelers for nearly two years , reopening in February. It deported tennis ace Novak Djokovic for being unvaccinated, preventing him from competing in this year’s Australian Open. The country has one of the lowest covid death rates in the Western world.

One side effect of cruise covid rules: Norovirus has plummeted

Australia’s reopening came after it achieved one of the world’s highest immunization rates. As of Nov. 9, nearly 96 percent of residents older than 16 have received two doses of a coronavirus vaccine . The country of 25.7 million people reported a seven-day rolling average of 12 deaths on Friday, or about half that of a month ago.

But New South Wales authorities said this week that the state had entered a new wave of the pandemic, and some medical experts fear that the upcoming holiday season will trigger a spike in infections that could challenge the hospital system in a country that has removed virtually all curbs on the virus.

“If the major public hospitals on the east coast aren’t overwhelmed with patients and facing staff shortages over the holiday break - I’ll donate $1000 to charity,” tweeted physician Steve Robson, president of the Australian Medical Association, in response to news of infections on board the Majestic Princess. A cruise ship with around 800 cases of Covid-19 on board has docked in Sydney on Saturday morning just as the state declares a fourth wave of the virus.

The Majestic Princess pulled into Sydney’s international cruise ship passenger terminal at Circular Quay at around 6am on Saturday.

Video posted to social media captured the moment it pulled into the harbour with passengers clinging to their balcony.

Almost one in four guests on board have now been diagnosed with Covid-19 after a 12-day trip around New Zealand.

Passengers Stephen and Sharon Leslie said while they felt safe onboard the cruise, they were disappointed another outbreak had occurred.

“It’s just disappointing for the cruise industry … and towards the end it did spoil things a bit,” Mrs Leslie told the Daily Telegraph.

Danielle Whitney-Smart was forced to spend the last few days of her first-cruise experience stuck in her cabin.

“It was great but definitely strange by the end,” Ms Smart told the Daily Telegraph.

She said she “couldn’t fault” the cruise company who ramped up cleaning protocols to manage the spread of rising cases.

Ambulance crews were standing by at the overseas passenger terminal as people prepared to disembark the ship.

A Princess Cruises spokesperson confirmed the outbreak and said positive cases were isolating in their rooms this morning.

“These guests are mildly symptomatic or asymptomatic and are isolating in their staterooms. All unimpacted guests are wearing masks and this will continue when they disembark in Sydney on 12 November,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

“Reflective of the increase in community transmission, we too have seen more guests test positive for Covid-19 on the current voyage of Majestic Princess.”

The outbreak is the single biggest case of cruise ship infections in Australia since the Ruby Princess docked in 2020.

There were 900 covid cases on board that ship and 28 people died during the subsequent outbreak.

NSW Health is liaising with the cruise operator in the wake of the outbreak to “monitor the health of its passengers and crew members”.

“NSW Health’s assessment is that the Covid-19 risk level for the Majestic Princess is now Tier 3, which indicates a high level of transmission,” a spokesman said in a statement.

Private transport has been arranged for guests who have tested positive to travel to isolation.

“Carnival has advised NSW Health that passengers disembarking from the ship have undertaken a rapid antigen test in the 24 hours leading up to disembarkation,” a NSW Health spokesman said.

“Carnival has advised NSW Health that they are assisting passengers with Covid-19 to make safe onward travel arrangements.”

There are currently 4600 people on-board the Majestic Princess – 3300 guests and 1300 crew.

The outbreak comes as its announced that NSW has entered a fourth wave of Covid-19, with chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant saying that current omicron variants circulating in the community are able to escape immunity.

“The wave is taking off with some trajectory, it will be quite a steep wave and hopefully the decline will be equally as steep,” she told ABC.

“That’s why it’s important the community takes these protective measures now and I can’t stress the urgency — if you’re going to get vaccinated do it immediately.”

Cruise ship docks in Sydney after 800 people on board infected by COVID outbreak

  • A cruise ship where 800 people on board have tested positive for COVID has docked in Sydney.
  • The president of the cruise operator said cases began to rise halfway through the voyage.
  •  54,661 cases of COVID were reported across Australia in the last week.

Insider Today

A cruise ship suffering a major COVID outbreak has docked in Sydney, Australia.

The BBC reports that approximately 4,600 passengers and crew were aboard the luxury Majestic Princess, and 800 people were affected by the outbreak of the viral bug.

President of the cruise operator Carnival Australia Marguerite Fitzgerald told ABC Australia that they began seeing many cases halfway through the 12-day cruise around New Zealand, with all cases either asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic.

She told the news outlet, "Reflective of the increase in community transmissions, we too have seen more guests test positive for COVID-19 on the current voyage of Majestic Princess. This is a result of mass testing of our 3,300 guests."

She added that staff would be assisting all COVID-positive guests "with accessing private transport and accommodation to complete their isolation period," according to ABC.

One passenger told ABC, per The Guardian: "It was scary because we heard about it, but of course, we tested negative, and the Majestic Princess were really good with the protocols. [We] wore masks for these last seven days, and we were very careful when we went ashore."

Carnival Australia did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

COVID cases are spiking across Australia, with 54,661 cases reported across the country in the last week, said The Guardian.

According to Reuters , Australian authorities have been working to assure the public that this ship outbreak is under control. Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil said that authorities had created "regular protocols" since the March-April 2020 Ruby Princess outbreak when hundreds caught COVID-19-linked an Australian cruise around the coast of New Zealand, and 28 people died.

O'Neil told Reuters that the authorities are determining how to get passengers off the Majestic Princess "on a case-by-case basis."

The ship will soon depart for Melbourne, Australia.

Cruise Ship With 800 Covid-Positive Passengers And Crew Docked In Sydney

After cases soared, a cruise ship with 800 Covid-positive passengers docked in Sydney , Australia. The wave of infections spread around both passengers and crew members on a cruise ship sailing from New Zealand.

The Majestic Princess cruise ship was halfway through a 12- day voyage when the outbreak happened. Cases increasingly spread which led to mass Covid-19 testing for 3,300 passengers on board. Of these passengers, 800 tested positive alongside a few crew members.

According to CNN, the ship had 4,600 passengers and crew on board in total.

The uptick in cases has been linked to the rise of infections in Australia.

In a media briefing, Carnival Australia president Marguerite Fitzgerald told reporters that a large number of the cases were detected at least halfway into the voyage, adding that all cases were either asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic.

She also highlighted that all guests who tested positive will have help “with accessing private transport and accommodation to complete their isolation period”. Fitzgerald added that Carnival Australia maintains the most stringent of measures to keep all safe onboard, including requiring 95% of guests over the age of 12 to be vaccinated and testing staff and passengers for Covid before they board.

The incident is reminiscent of the outbreak on the ship Ruby Princess, which belongs to the same operator, earlier in the pandemic. When asked about the comparison, the BBC shares that Fitzgerald responded: “Since then, we as a community have learnt a lot, a lot more about Covid.”

According to reports, the Majestic Princess will soon depart for Melbourne.

Passengers must record a rapid antigen test before disembarking but crew remain onboard

A cruise ship with more than 100 Covid-19 positive people onboard has docked in Sydney.

After departing Eden on the New South Wales south coast with more than 2,300 people onboard, the Coral Princess berthed at Circular Quay just before dawn on Wednesday, where it will remain for a day before returning to its home port of Brisbane.

Passengers will have to record a negative result on a rapid antigen test before disembarking but the crew will have to remain.

The outbreak mostly involves infected crew members, with 114 in isolation on Tuesday.

Four passengers were also isolating after positive results, and 24 earlier disembarked in Brisbane , according to Queensland’s chief health officer, John Gerrard.

NSW Health said passengers who tested positive had probably taken the virus onboard with them rather than becoming infected at sea.

The ship docked in Eden on Tuesday, where about 800 passengers disembarked after returning negative tests.

The Eden-Monaro MP and NSW regional development minister, Kristy McBain, said locals had been happy to see the ship dock after bushfires and the pandemic impacted the region.

“When you’ve got towns that rely on tourism it’s been an incredibly difficult couple of years,” McBain told Sydney radio 2GB on Tuesday. “Hopefully this will be the first of many cruise ships to dock this season ... There’s been significant investment into the Port of Eden so that cruise ships could dock in town.”

A Princess Cruises spokesperson said the crew who had tested positive were asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.

At the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, another Princess cruise liner – the Ruby Princess – was briefly linked to one in eight NSW coronavirus cases.

The latest cruise ship outbreak comes as concern grows about the growing spread of the B.4 and B.5 Omicron subvariants that could reinfect people who have already had the virus.

The Australian Health Protection Principal Committee has advised shortening the period people are considered immune to the virus to four weeks, requiring people experiencing symptoms more than 28 days after they left isolation to get tested again.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia has criticised the end of free rapid antigen tests for concession card holders and called for the government to extend it beyond July.

“Case numbers and hospitalisations are still rising every single day,” said the society’s president, Fei Sim. “Governments should be encouraging more testing, not less.”

Australia recorded 41,336 new coronavirus cases and 58 related deaths on Tuesday.

COVID-hit cruise ship docks in Sydney

A cruise carrying more than 100 COVID -infected people has docked in Sydney , with passengers only allowed to disembark if they return a negative result on a rapid antigen test.

After departing Eden on the NSW south coast, the Coral Princess with more than 2300 people on board, berthed at Circular Quay just before dawn on Wednesday.

See more about the cruise ship in the video above

It will remain there for a day before returning to its home port of Brisbane.

Passengers will have to record a negative RAT result before disembarking. The crew must remain on board.

The outbreak mostly involves infected crew members, with 114 in isolation on Tuesday.

Four passengers were also isolating after returning positive tests. Some 24 people got off the ship before it left Brisbane on Monday.

NSW Health believes the passengers who tested positive probably took the virus on board with them, rather than becoming infected at sea.

“However, in any indoor space including cruise ships, there is always a risk that COVID-19 will spread,” a NSW Health spokesperson said in a statement.

“Cruise ships must inform passengers of this risk. Prompt testing, isolation of cases along with routine prevention through masks, hand hygiene and high levels of vaccination among passengers and crew remains important.

“All COVID-positive people and their close contacts are isolating and being cared for by the onboard medical team.”

A Princess Cruises spokesman said the crew members who tested positive were asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.

The Coral Princess was the first to make Brisbane’s International Cruise Terminal its home port last month.

It is the sister ship to the Ruby Princess, which was linked to 28 COVID deaths and hundreds of cases in 2020, with an inquiry laying most of the blame on health authorities for allowing infected passengers to leave the ship.

NSW sails towards normality with the lifting of COVID cruise ship protocols

Published: 28 August 2023

Released by: The Premier, Minister for Health, Minister for Tourism

The NSW Premier Chris Minns has ended COVID rules for cruising as the industry prepares for a busy summer.

Premier Minns has signed paperwork formally removing the Eastern Seaboard and Western Australian Cruise Protocols.

The cruise protocols were introduced in April 2022 to support the safe resumption of cruising following the lifting of the Commonwealth’s ban during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The participating state governments - NSW, Victoria, QLD and WA - approved the cruise protocols, which have been implemented by the cruise industry on a voluntary basis.

The protocols stated that all passengers aged 12 years and over needed to be fully-vaccinated to board a cruise ship departing or arriving at a port in these 4 states.

It also enforced mask wearing, including when embarking and disembarking, along with mandating negative COVID test results prior to departure.

Governments have agreed there is no longer a need for formal protocols with increasing community immunity to COVID-19 and lessons learned from the cruising industry since voyages resumed.

The Premier’s move follows an announcement late Friday by the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC).

The AHPPC rescinded the current Communicable Diseases Network Australia (CDNA) Cruise Guidelines and issued new advice around cruising.

The committee did note that cruise ships remain a higher risk setting for communicable disease and that cruise operators can help reduce the risk, including by managing staff health, encouraging passengers and crew to stay up to date with vaccinations and by promptly identifying and controlling outbreaks.

The NSW Government encourages the cruise industry to continue its work to reduce the risk of COVID-19 and other outbreaks on voyages, in line with the updated Australian Health Protection Principal Committee’s advice.

Premier of NSW Chris Minns said:

“We need to get life back to normal.

“We have scrapped these rules because they aren’t needed any more.

“Passengers can take their own decisions to look after their health before and during a cruise.

“Cruise companies have been looking after their guests and workers and we encourage them to continue that.

“But this change is needed – we could not remain the only country with these rules for cruising.

“These protocols were important at the time to get the cruising industry going again after COVID. They were never meant to remain forever.”

Minister for Tourism John Graham said:

"The 2023 winter cruise season in Sydney is on track to be one of the strongest on record and it is fantastic even more people can now participate.

“These protocols were important after COVID but were not intended to continue in perpetuity and I thank the sector for how they have handled the additional requirements placed upon them.

“The decision to bring the sector in line with other forms of travel is a sensible way to give visitors an unforgettable and safe experience across NSW’s beautiful coastline.”

Minister for Health Ryan Park said:

“The decision to repeal the cruise protocols is supported by NSW Health advice and NSW Health will continue to work with the cruise industry to minimise health risks to passengers as much as possible.

“The NSW Government remains committed to safeguarding public health and ensuring that policies are adapted in response to changing circumstances.

“I am confident that the cruise industry will continue to prioritise the health and safety of passengers, crew, and the broader community.”

Nearly 100 Holland America cruise passengers become ill in norovirus outbreak

cruise ship with covid in sydney

Nearly 100 Holland America Line passengers got sick in a norovirus outbreak.

Among 2,522 guests on the cruise line’s Koningsdam ship, 98 reported being ill, along with 12 crew members, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Their main symptoms were diarrhea and vomiting.

Koningsdam is currently sailing a round-trip cruise visiting Hawaii and French Polynesia that departed from San Diego on Feb. 17, according to CruiseMapper . Holland America and the ship’s crew increased cleaning and disinfection and isolated sick passengers and crew following the outbreak, among other steps, the CDC said.

“At Holland America Line, the safety and well-being of our guests and crew is our top priority. During the current voyage, a number of guests on Koningsdam reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness,” a spokesperson for the line told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. “The cases were mostly mild and quickly resolving. We initiated enhanced sanitation protocols to minimize further transmission and the incidence of cases has since declined significantly.”

The news comes after more than 125 Cunard Line passengers got sick in a gastrointestinal illness outbreak earlier this year. Norovirus cases have also risen in the U.S. in recent weeks.

The CDC logged 14 cruise ship outbreaks that met its threshold for public notification in 2023, more than any year between 2017 and 2019. Norovirus was listed as the causative agent in all but one.

The virus is frequently associated with cruises, but Ben Lopman, a professor of epidemiology at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health, told USA TODAY last year that cruises make up a "tiny minority of norovirus outbreaks.” The majority take place in health care settings such as nursing homes.

Nathan Diller is a consumer travel reporter for USA TODAY based in Nashville. You can reach him at [email protected].

The term “long COVID” should be tossed aside like a stack of expired N95 masks — that’s according to health experts in one country, who found that symptoms of those reportedly suffering a year on weren’t any different than your typical virus, such as the flu.

Government-backed medical researchers in Australia say it’s time to stop using the fear-inducing phrase, which became popular after high volumes of people testing positive for COVID-19 led to a surge in generally non-severe “virus fatigue symptoms” that would normally have gone unnoticed, South West News Service reported.

upset blonde woman with fever and cough holding hand to her mouth, feeling weak and alone at home with bronchitis and viral infection.

“We believe it is time to stop using terms like ‘long COVID,’” said Dr. John Gerrard, Queensland’s chief health officer, who oversaw the newly released study.

“They wrongly imply there is something unique and exceptional about longer-term symptoms associated with this virus,” he explained.

“This terminology can cause unnecessary fear, and in some cases, hyper-vigilance to longer symptoms that can impede recovery,” Gerrard warned.

Researchers at Queensland Health surveyed 5,112 symptom sufferers age 18 and older to reach their conclusion.

Symptoms reported included fatigue, brain fog, cough, shortness of breath, change to smell and taste, dizziness, and rapid or irregular heartbeat.

Researchers pulled their subjects from a pool of sick Australians who’d taken COVID-19 tests — testing both positive and negative — in late spring 2022, quizzing them a year later on their symptoms and quality of life.

Sixteen percent of respondents said they were experiencing symptoms in spring 2023, while 3.6 percent reported “moderate-to-severe functional impairment” in their daily lives.

No evidence was found that adults who tested positive in 2022 were experiencing this increased level of impairment at a higher rate than those who tested negative, or those who simply had the flu.

The study noted that rates of diagnosed “long COVID” were lower than in other countries, due to tight restrictions imposed by the Australian government during the pandemic.

The finished document is due to be presented next month at 2024’s European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in Barcelona.

“In health systems with highly vaccinated populations, long COVID may have appeared to be a distinct and severe illness because of high volumes of COVID-19 cases during the pandemic,” Gerrard said.

Traveling people wearing face mask in a covid pandemic in a crowd, public or airport border with passport or travel restrictions.

“However, we found that the rates of ongoing symptoms and functional impairment are indistinguishable from other post-viral illnesses,” he continued.

“These findings underscore the importance of comparing post-COVID-19 outcomes with those following other respiratory infections, and of further research into post-viral syndromes.”

Tokyo cruise ship pier sees heavy traffic amid post-COVID tourism

An increasing number of cruise ships are visiting Tokyo as tourism rebounds to pre-pandemic levels, with a docking facility in the capital operating at full capacity after years of limited service to avoid spread of the novel coronavirus.

The Tokyo International Cruise Terminal on Tokyo Bay will have 11 visits by cruise ships, including the Queen Elizabeth of Britain, by the end of this month, up from 10 a year ago, and 13 visits in April, up from nine, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.

First opened in September 2020, the terminal in the Daiba seaside area did not host any foreign cruise ships until March 2023 due to the pandemic. Only a limited number of domestic tourism ships used the facility in 2021 and 2022.

A total of 49 cruise ship calls were logged at the pier in 2023, according to a website of the metropolitan government's port and harbor bureau, with this year's combined figures for just March and April reaching nearly half that level. It also shows seven visits planned for May, up from six a year earlier.

After the Japanese capital was selected in 2013 as the host of the Olympics and Paralympics initially planned for the summer of 2020, the city's government launched a 39 billion yen project to build a cruise ship terminal able to accommodate vessels with the world's largest displacements of over 200,000 tons.

Previously, many cruise ships went to a pier in Tokyo's Harumi area requiring passage under the Rainbow Bridge. But as the size of such vessels increased amid a global trend of carrying more passengers at lower fares, some ships became too big for the bridge's 52-meter clearance.

Construction for the new terminal in the nearby Daiba area, accessible for ships without passing under the bridge, began in 2015 and was completed in June 2020. The facility officially opened three months later, at a time when Japanese transport authorities had already stopped accepting foreign cruise ships due to the pandemic.

The Crystal Serenity, a 740-passenger cruise ship remodeled in 2023, pictured cruising through New ... [+] York Harbor.

There’s an old joke where a travel consultant asks a customer, “Are you interested in a world cruise?” The customer responds, “No, I’d rather go someplace else.”

But if you’re interested in a five-month luxury journey that will take you to more than 27 countries, the upcoming 2026 World Cruise from Crystal may be for you.

The cruise, that will transport guests from world capitals to tropical paradises, will be open for booking on March 19, 2024. A waitlist is already available.

The Crystal Serenity will be one’s home for 135 days on the World Cruise. The 68,000-ton Serenity is 820 feet long and 105 feet wide with a maximum cruising speed of 22 knots. The ship’s 740 passengers all enjoy ocean view rooms and suites, and the ship has a guest to crew ratio of just 1.33 to 1.

The Serenity was launched in 2003, with Dame Julie Andrews named the ship’s ‘godmother.’ Serenity, which was updated last year, is similar in size and passenger capacity to the Regent Grandeur of the Seas , launched in 2023.

Crystal, formerly Crystal Cruises, was acquired by A&K Travel Group (Abercrombie & Kent) in 2022, after suffering a near-death experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. The deal included the Crystal brand and its two vessels, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony. Crystal says the ships have been “reimagined” with larger, updated suites with artisanal finishes and new wellness offerings.

The Crystal Serenity will depart on its global journey from Los Angeles on January 11, 2026. The 135-day voyage will include visits to 72 destinations in more than 27 countries, to experience their culture, cuisine and civilization.

As one might imagine, such a titanic cruise bears a similar price. Pricing for the 2026 World Cruise will start at $84,000 per person based on double occupancy. Although the departure date is more than 20 months away, this would undoubtedly be a good time to open a certificate of deposits to guarantee one’s funds for the journey.

The World Cruise 2026 destination highlights of the 2026 include:

· Bora Bora

· New Zealand

· Hong Kong

From there, the ship and its passengers will visit Australia and the iconic Sydney Opera House and sail on to the bustling city of Hong Kong. The iconic Indian city of Mumbai, the towers of Dubai and the beauty of Bali on are on the Asian itinerary.

The voyage travels on through the Mediterranean, including a visit to Athen and a stop in Monaco, just in time for the Grand Prix. It will conclude in Rome on May 26.

"Celebrating the spirit of discovery and epicurean travel, Crystal presents the 2026 World Cruise, a magnificent journey that embodies intuitive service, cultural immersion and unforgettable memories. Patients, advocates come to Washington for Long Covid Awareness Day

Millions of people in the u.s. and around the world are dealing with long-lasting effects from the covid-19 pandemic..

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - On Friday, dozens of people went to our nation’s capital to demand more action be taken to address long Covid. Patients, advocates, and activists demonstrated in front of the Lincoln Memorial for the first Long Covid Awareness Day.

“When you become a nurse, you swear to a code of ethics. This code is why I’m standing here today,” said Dara York who organized the rally.

York is a nurse and mother of three from California who is battling long Covid. She and others called on Congress and President Biden to provide more resources for prevention, research and treatment.

“You must take action now,” she shouted.

A report published by Brookings Metro in 2022 said around 16 million working-age Americans have long Covid.

“My life has been destroyed by Covid,” said 43-year-old Kate Whitley.

Whitley is a small business owner and mother from Nashville who has been living with long Covid for nearly two years. She said she has been in and out of the emergency room and takes dozens of pills a day to combat her symptoms.

“There’s no cure. There’s no treatment. Covid is thriving in my bone marrow and there’s no help for me,” Whitley said.

Dr. Angelique Corthals, who specializes in pathology, said the vaccine has been effective from preventing severe disease but not transmission. Dr. Corthals believes the lack of proper treatment is a “crisis in the making.”

“People have been calling this the pandemic in the pandemic. And I absolutely believe this is gonna be happening within the next five to 10 years,” said Corthals.

This week, The National Institute of Health began phase 2 of clinical trials for treatments for adults living with long Covid.

House Democrats introduced a bill to address Long Covid more than a year ago but it has not moved in the Republican-led chamber.
