95 most inspirational travel quotes ever penned
Our favourite inspirational travel quotes have encouraged us to travel with abandon over the years. Perhaps they will do the same for you…
For us, there is no such thing as luxury travel; travel is, by default, a luxury. It is a privilege provided by the country of our birth, a privilege that many are not as fortunate to enjoy.
Sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves at just how ridiculous our lives have become: an ex-teacher and jobbing writer travelling the world for a living. It is absurd, it is astonishing, it is luxury.
When I first went travelling at 21 years old, my father gave me this quote scrawled on a piece of card.
It infused me with wanderlust. It encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone, make the most of my time, see the world and enjoy the freedom that comes with being on the road. It remains one of the most inspirational travel quotes I’ve read (even if Twain did not actually say it).
Today, 20 years and almost 100 countries later, it’s still in my wallet. Despite its tattered and dishevelled appearance, it’s every bit as important to me now as it was then.
With that in mind, we’ve collated our most beloved inspirational travel quotes to encourage readers to “explore, dream and discover” for themselves.

No alien land in all the world has any deep strong charm for me but that one [ Hawaii ], no other land could so longingly and so beseechingly haunt me, sleeping and waking, through half a lifetime, as that one has done. Other things leave me, but it abides; other things change, but it remains the same. For me the balmy airs are always blowing, its summer seas flashing in the sun; the pulsing of its surfbeat is in my ear; I can see its garlanded crags, its leaping cascades, its plumy palms drowsing by the shore, its remote summits floating like islands above the cloud wrack; I can feel the spirit of its wildland solitudes, I can hear the splash of its brooks; in my nostrils still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago.

• Adventure Travel Quotes
Adventure is worthwhile in itself. — Amelia Earhart
If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine; it is lethal. — Paulo Coelho
Most of us abandoned the idea of a life full of adventure and travel sometime between puberty and our first job. Our dreams died under the dark weight of responsibility. Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread. — Edward Abbey
Once a journey is designed, equipped, and put in process, a new factor enters and takes over. A trip, a safari, an exploration, is an entity, different from all other journeys. It has personality, temperament, individuality, uniqueness. A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us. Tour masters, schedules, reservations, brass-bound and inevitable, dash themselves to wreckage on the personality of the trip. Only when this is recognized can the blown-in-the glass bum relax and go along with it. Only then do the frustrations fall away. In this a journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it. — John Steinbeck
What is that feeling when you’re driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? – it’s the too-huge world vaulting us, and it’s good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies. — Jack Kerouac
A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for. — J.A. Shedd
It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any. — Hugh Laurie
Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the Earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white. — Mark Jenkins
The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. — Christopher McCandless
Adventure is allowing the unexpected to happen to you. Exploration is experiencing what you have not experienced before. How can there be any adventure, any exploration, if you let somebody else – above all, a travel bureau – arrange everything before-hand? — Richard Aldington
Be careful because Cambodia is the most dangerous place you will ever visit. You will fall in love with it, and eventually it will break your heart. — Joel Brinkley
• Solo Travel Quotes
To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the most pleasant sensations in the world. — Freya Stark
Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. — Unknown
I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses. — Bill Bryson
The true fruit of travel is perhaps the feeling of being nearly everywhere at home. — Freya Stark
When you’ve managed to stumble directly into the heart of the unknown – either through the misdirection of others, or better yet, through your own creative ineptitude – there is no one there to hold your hand or tell you what to do. In those bad lost moments, in the times when we are advised not to panic, we own the unknown, and the world belongs to us. The child within has full reign. Few of us are ever so free. — Tim Cahill
No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow. — Lin Yutang
He travels the fastest who travels alone. — Rudyard Kipling
Travel can be one of the most rewarding forms of introspection. — Lawrence Durrell
When the traveler goes alone he gets acquainted with himself. — Liberty Hyde Bailey
The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready. — Henry David Thoreau
I think one travels more usefully when they travel alone, because they reflect more. — Thomas Jefferson
Loving life is easy when you are abroad. Where no one knows you and you hold your life in your hands all alone, you are more master of yourself than at any other time. — Hannah Arendt
Personally I like going places where I don’t speak the language, don’t know anybody, don’t know my way around and don’t have any delusions that I’m in control. Disoriented, even frightened, I feel alive, awake in ways I never am at home. — Michael Mewshaw
I can speak to my soul only when the two of us are off exploring deserts or cities or mountains or roads. — Paulo Coelho
Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road. Healthy, free, the world before me. The long brown path before me leading me wherever I choose. — Walt Whitman
• Anthony Bourdain Travel Quotes
If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go.
Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks — on your body or on your heart — are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.
It’s an irritating reality that many places and events defy description. Angkor Wat and Machu Picchu , for instance, seem to demand silence, like a love affair you can never talk about. For a while after, you fumble for words, trying vainly to assemble a private narrative, an explanation, a comfortable way to frame where you’ve been and what’s happened. In the end, you’re just happy you were there — with your eyes open — and lived to see it.
Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
I’m a big believer in winging it. I’m a big believer that you’re never going to find the perfect city travel experience or the perfect meal without a constant willingness to experience a bad one. Letting the happy accident happen is what a lot of vacation itineraries miss, I think, and I’m always trying to push people to allow those things to happen rather than stick to some rigid itinerary.
Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds? … I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once.
It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn. Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.
I think food, culture, people and landscape are all absolutely inseparable.
Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.
Southeast Asia has a real grip on me. From the very first time I went there, it was a fulfillment of my childhood fantasies of the way travel should be.
I wanted adventures. I wanted to go up the Nung river to the heart of darkness in Cambodia . I wanted to ride out into a desert on camelback, sand and dunes in every direction, eat whole roasted lamb with my fingers. I wanted to kick snow off my boots in a Mafiya nightclub in Russia. I wanted to play with automatic weapons in Phnom Penh, recapture the past in a small oyster village in France, step into a seedy neon-lit pulqueria in rural Mexico. I wanted to run roadblocks in the middle of the night, blowing past angry militia with a handful of hurled Marlboro packs, experience fear, excitement, wonder. I wanted kicks – the kind of melodramatic thrills and chills I’d yearned for since childhood, the kind of adventure I’d found as a little boy in the pages of my Tintin comic books. I wanted to see the world – and I wanted the world to be just like the movies.
At this point I think my body is like an old car. Another dent ain’t gonna make a whole lot of difference. At best it’s a reminder that you’re still alive and lucky as hell. Another tattoo, another thing you did, another place you’ve been.
Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive, and moribund.
If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.
Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

Choose the Right Business Travel Quote for Your Next International Trip
In an age where globalization has rendered distances moot, international travel is still more than just a luxury—it's often a necessity as the period post-Covid19 has illustrated. Whether for business, leisure, or personal reasons, crossing borders is a regular activity for many. However, with the myriad of travel options available, how does one ensure they're making the right choice? The importance of selecting the appropriate international travel package cannot be overstated.
Choosing a package solely based on price can be a perilous endeavor. While budget-friendly deals can be enticing, they might not always offer the best value. Opting for a cheaper package might mean compromising on comfort, safety, or even the overall travel experience. There's also the risk of hidden costs, which can turn a seemingly affordable trip into an expensive ordeal. Moreover, inadequate packages might not provide comprehensive insurance coverage, leaving travelers vulnerable in foreign lands. In essence, the wrong choice can transform what should be a seamless journey into a logistical nightmare.
Getting the Best Business Travel Quote: What Does a Travel Agent Need?
A business travel quote isn't just a piece of paper with numbers—it's a roadmap for your entire journey. To ensure this roadmap is accurate and tailored to your needs, business travel agencies require specific details:
- Travel Dates: Not only do these dates determine availability, but they also influence pricing. Peak seasons might be pricier, while off-peak periods could offer discounts. Flexibility around these dates can also open up more cost-effective options.
- Destination: The destination determines visa requirements, potential health risks, and local customs. Multiple destinations or layovers can complicate the itinerary, necessitating a more detailed quote.
- Accommodation Preferences: Beyond just a place to sleep, accommodations can define your travel experience. Preferences about hotel locations, amenities, and star ratings can significantly impact the overall cost and comfort of your trip. Consider the locations you need to visit as the distance from your hotel to the final destination comes at a cost.
- Transportation: Your choice of flight class, from economy to first-class, affects comfort and price. Additionally, considerations like car rentals or local transportation methods need to be factored into the quote to get the right estimate of your total trip cost.
- Additional Services: Services like travel insurance can be lifesavers in emergencies. Visa services, on the other hand, can determine the feasibility of the trip itself. Including these in your quote ensures a holistic travel experience.
- Budget: By providing a clear budget, agents can tailor options to ensure maximum value for your money.
Scrutinizing Your Quote: What to Watch Out For?
Receiving a business travel quote is just the first step. Ensuring it aligns with your expectations requires a keen eye and attention to detail:
- Hidden Fees: Some quotes might not include taxes, service charges, or other fees. These can add up, turning a seemingly affordable trip into a costly affair. Always ask for an all-inclusive quote.
- Cancellation Policies: Life is unpredictable. Understanding the terms and potential penalties for canceling or rescheduling is crucial. Some deals might be non-refundable, while others could offer partial refunds.
- Inclusions and Exclusions: A quote might list a series of services, but the devil is in the details. Does the hotel stay include breakfast? Are there baggage fees for the flight? Knowing what's included and what's not can prevent unpleasant surprises.
- Currency: Quotes in foreign currencies can be misleading due to fluctuating exchange rates. Ensure you're aware of the current rate or request a quote in your local currency.
- Reviews and Ratings: A quote might promise a five-star experience, but real-world reviews can offer a more accurate picture. Before committing, check online reviews and ratings to ensure the services align with your expectations.

Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.
For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:
- Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
- Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.
Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance
Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.
- Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
- Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
- Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
- Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.
How to find the cheapest travel insurance
The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.
“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.
Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.
- How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
- Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
- The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.
Is cheap travel insurance worth it?
Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.
“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.
Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.
“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).
A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.
Methodology
Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

- Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
- Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.
Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.
Cheapest travel insurance FAQs
When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.
Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024
According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.
A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.
The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip, according to our analysis of rates. However, you may find cheaper travel insurance if you opt for a plan with fewer benefits or lower coverage limits. How much you pay for travel insurance will also depend on the number of travelers covered, their ages, the length of the trip and any upgrades you add to your plan.
Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:
- Medical emergencies.
- Trip delays.
- Trip interruption.
- Trip cancellation.
- Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.
However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .
Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.
Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:
- Rental car damage coverage.
- Medical bundle.
- Security bundle.
- Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
- Adventure sports bundle.
- Pet bundle.
- Wedding bundle.
- “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
- “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
- “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .

Boeing is now 'No. 2' in the industry: Mike Boyd
Boyd Group International President Mike Boyd and CFRA deputy research director Stewart Glickman weigh the consumer and market implications from Boeing's recent unrelated safety incidents.
A Boeing 737 Max 8 operated by Air Canada made an emergency landing in Idaho this week after experiencing an in-flight emergency.
On Tuesday, Flight 997 diverted to Boise during its trip from Mexico City to Vancouver, Canada, after the pilots received an indicator light in the flight deck, the airline told FOX Business.
Officials later discovered that it was due to a faulty cargo hold indicator.
The flight landed at Boise Airport after the light came on as a precautionary measure. The aircraft was met by first responders at around 11 a.m. local time. There were 122 passengers and six crew members on board during the incident. All passengers were picked up by another aircraft Tuesday evening to complete their trip, the airline said.

If you're looking for pet insurance at a cheap rate, Pets Best Pet Insurance has some of the lowest prices in the industry. You can go to any licensed veterinarian. However, it should be noted that in Insider's staff experiences with Pets Best policies, the reimbursement rate is also applied to your deductible.
So if you had a $500 deductible with 90% reimbursement, a $500 claim would leave you with another $50 left on your deductible, with charges applied based on the 90% reimbursement rate. This is not unusual, but it should factor into your budget and policy choices.
Pets Best offers three types of plans: accident-only, accident and illness, and a wellness plan. With highly customizable options, you can further lower your rate. Plus, the insurer doesn't have an age gap on pet insurance.
Unfortunately, if you're looking for alternative treatments like herbal and holistic treatments, consider searching elsewhere.
- Annual coverage options: $5,000, unlimited
- Reimbursement options: 70%, 80%, 90%
- Deductible options: $50, $100, $200, $250, $500, $1,000
- Average monthly cost: Dogs - $20; Cats - $12

Many pet insurance providers will only insure pets younger than 14. Insurers may put an age cap on eligibility because pets, like humans, tend to develop health conditions as they age. However, Figo Pet Insurance will insure your furry friend, regardless of age. Whatever plan you consider, understand pet insurance companies will not cover preexisting conditions . For dogs or cats with a history of allergies, cancer, diabetes, or other conditions, this would still leave pet parents on the hook for related bills if diagnosed before buying your plan.
Figo offers three plans: the Essential plan, the Preferred plan, and the Unlimited plan. This insurer provides ample coverage choices to customize your policy based on your pet's needs and your budget.
Unfortunately, Figo doesn't sell a basic, accident-only plan, which is generally cheaper than an accident-illness or wellness program. Additionally, while it reimburses you, you must pay your vet bills upfront. Many pet parents resolve this issue using services like CareCredit, which can be paid off after completing the claim. If you're interested in Figo, we recommend Costco members go through the retail giant's partnership with Figo as you get 15% off standard premiums.
- Annual coverage options: $5,000, $10,000, unlimited
- Reimbursement options: 70%, 80%, 90%, 100%
- Deductible options: $100, $250, $500, $750
- Average monthly cost: Dogs - $26; Cats - $14

With Spot Pet Insurance , you have nine annual coverage limits, three reimbursement, and five deductible options. This insurer offers an excellent range of policy coverages to mix and match as you choose. Of course, your monthly premiums will vary accordingly.
Spot pet insurance also offers an accident-only and accident-illness plan. The company as a wider range of pet coverage that many competitors lack, like prescription food and behavioral modification. Based on our research at the time of this guide, Spot doesn't sell wellness plans. However, you can add the gold and platinum preventative care plan to supplement your policy.
- Annual coverage options: $2,500, $3,000, $4,000, $5,000, $7,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, unlimited
- Deductible options: $100, $250, $500, $750, $1,000
- Average monthly cost: Dogs - $28; Cats - $14

Best for Bundling: Lemonade Pet Insurance
Lemonade Pet Insurance is a relatively new pet insurance company. Aside from pet insurance, it also offers home, car, and renters insurance (which received high marks for customer satisfaction). So you can bundle your pet insurance with other products for 10% additional savings.
If you're a tech-savvy shopper, you may appreciate Lemonade's highly-rated mobile app and user-friendly digital platform. You could purchase a policy, manage your claims, and access your insurance ID at the touch of your fingertip. Unfortunately, Lemonade is not available in all states yet. So be sure to check and see if Lemonade is available to you. But with up to $100,000 in annual coverage, Lemonade covers most significant health events for pets.
- Annual coverage options: $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, $50,000, $100,000
- Deductible options: $100, $250, $500
- Average monthly cost: Dogs - $28; Cats- $14

Unfortunately, all pet insurance providers exclude preexisting conditions from coverage. This is because pet insurance companies have to mediate risk to keep premiums low for everyone. However, several companies will cover preexisting conditions if your pet has been symptom- and treatment-free for some time. ASPCA Pet Insurance is one of those providers.
ASPCA pet insurance will cover curable preexisting conditions if your cat, dog, and even horses if your pet has been symptom-free for over 180 days (excluding ligament and knee conditions).
With ASPCA pet insurance, you choose an accident-only, accident and illness, and preventative care plan. ASPCA pet insurance's comprehensive programs cover alternative therapies, behavioral issues, and congenital and hereditary conditions. The provider even covers pet microchipping. When going through the quoting process online, we were told we must speak to a live representative to obtain a quote for unlimited annual coverage.
- Annual coverage options: $3,000, $4,000, $5,000, $7,000, $10,000
- Average monthly cost: Dogs - $33; Cats - $17

Only a few providers offer alternative medicine if you prefer to take the holistic and herbal route when seeking treatment for your pet. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance offers a comprehensive list of non-invasive forms of therapy, including acupuncture, hydrotherapy, physical therapy, laser therapy, and massage care, as long as a licensed veterinarian provides the treatment.
The trade-off, however, is Healthy Paws won't cover preventative and wellness care. Its site specifies Healthy Paws believes wellness costs can be planned for. For example, you expect to do a yearly exam and get updated vaccines, and even if you save a little bit each month, you can plan accordingly. However, accidents and severe chronic illnesses are difficult to plan for, and costs are frequently unreasonable. So Healthy Paws focuses on the most significant area of need it sees.
- Annual coverage options: Unlimited
- Reimbursement options: 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%
- Deductible options: $50, $100, $250, $500, $750, $1,000
- Average monthly cost: Dogs - $37; Cats - $18

Finding cheap pet insurance may be challenging if you have an exotic pet like a bird, rabbit, or reptile. Nationwide Pet Insurance is currently the only pet insurance company to offer wide-reaching coverage for many exotic pets. Other companies offer "discount plans," much like human prescription discount plans. However, you'd have to work with specific vets, and coverage would be specific to the treatment provided.
Nationwide pet insurance offers three pet insurance plans:
- Major Medical (accident and illness plan)
- Whole Pet (more comprehensive accident and illness plan)
- A wellness plan
Nationwide offers various conditions in its plans. However, the coverage is set. Nationwide's sample accident and illness policy broke down many potential diagnoses with primary and secondary diagnoses allowances. Ultimately, each buyer will receive a policy breakdown. However, Nationwide is a more expensive pet insurance provider with limited flexibility.
- Annual coverage options: Per condition
- Reimbursement options: 50%, 70%, 90%
- Deductible options: $250
- Average monthly cost: Dogs - $35; Cats - $14
Read our Nationwide Pet Insurance review here.
Trupanion Pet Insurance is one of the pricier insurers on this list. Also, it offers a limited selection of policy options. However, if you're looking for a plan with unlimited coverage, Trupanion may be your winner. Unfortunately, we've all heard of the unexpected accident or illness in an otherwise healthy pet calling for emergency care.
Some emergency surgeries can easily surpass $20,000, and you might be on the hook for follow-up care, rehab, and even further surgeries. These are the times when unlimited care could be the saving grace to save your furry friend.
Trupanion offers deductibles ranging from $0 to $1,000. What's unique about this insurer is you'll only have to pay the deductible once per condition. For example, say your pet develops an illness requiring ongoing treatment. While most insurers will need you to pay a deductible yearly, you'll only have to pay your deductible once when the condition appears, potentially saving you money. This is handy for chronic conditions like allergies, diabetes, and cancer.
- Reimbursement options: 90%
- Deductible options: $0 to $1000
- Average monthly cost: Dogs - $50; Cats - $22
Read our Trupanion Pet Insurance review here.
We review a company based on several benchmarks and compare it against the industry standard.
- Affordability: We consider an insurer cheap if it meets or is below the industry average premiums. We also compare the prices against its competitors.
- Policy customization: We look at the breadth of an insurer's policy options. Policy options include the number of annual coverages, deductibles, and reimbursement options. The price is not the only determining factor if you compare a $50 for unlimited coverage with 80% reimbursement with a $10 policy with a $5,000 annual cap.
- Waiting period: A waiting period is the time between purchasing a policy and when coverage kicks in. The average waiting period for accident coverage is three days, and fourteen days for illness coverage. However, waiting periods for genetic conditions and serious illnesses could last a year.
- Types of policies available: The best pet insurance companies typically offer three types of plans: accident-only, accident-illness, and wellness plans. We look through an insurer's website to determine if it sells some variation of those three plans.
- Exclusions: Pets come in all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, insurance companies will exclude some pets from coverage, like older pets or even those with curable preexisting conditions.
- Company offerings: We look at the extensiveness of a company's policies. Some insurers offer coverage for microchipping, alternative medicine, and other unique conditions.
We go into further detail in our insurance rating methodology .
Which dog breed qualifies for the cheapest pet insurance?
Small, spayed, female mixed-breed dogs are the cheapest to insure, according to North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA).
How much is a reasonable deductible for pet insurance?
Consider your needs before choosing a deductible. Choosing a high deductible may lower your monthly premiums. However, to start your coverage as soon as possible, consider choosing a low deductible, like $100 to $500.
When should you use pet insurance?
You'll decide what coverage you're willing to pay for upfront. However, whenever you have a qualifying claim, you should file a claim with your pet insurance provider. Insurance providers may have a time limit on claims, and you have to fulfill your annual deductible before full coverage will kick in.
What is the cheapest pet insurance?
Pets Best pet insurance costs an average of $20 for dogs and $12 for cats, the lowest prices among its competitors. Prices will vary based on your pet's age and breed.

Minister Rodriguez advances Canada’s supply chain agenda at the G7 Transport Ministers’ Meeting in Italy
From: Transport Canada
News release
The Minister of Transport, the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, wrapped up a successful trip at the G7 Transport Ministers’ Meeting in Milan, Italy, from April 11 to 13, 2024.
April 13, 2024 Milan, Italy Transport Canada
Minister Rodriguez highlighted the importance that Canada places on increasing supply chain resiliency to build a stronger middle class in Canada and building a cleaner economy. He also took the opportunity to share Canada’s best practices and hear from other G7 countries on innovation, supply chain crisis management, and the energy transition.
As part of the G7 discussions, Canada proposed the creation of a new G7 Working Group on Transport Supply Chains to coordinate efforts of G7 countries. This will increase collaboration, share best practices and explore areas for cooperation to strengthen transportation resiliency and sustainability. Today, Ministers agreed to launch the Working Group.
During his visit, Minister Rodriguez met bilaterally with his counterparts from France, Germany, Italy, and the European Union, during which he discussed areas of cooperation between Canada and our allies to build resilient, secure, and sustainable supply chains for future generations across the G7, as well as the greening of the marine, air, and rail sectors.
Ministers concluded their meetings by issuing a joint declaration to reiterate the G7’s shared goal of ensuring safety across all modes of transportation as well as to reaffirm the importance of:
- improving supply chain resilience and sustainability;
- improving accessibility;
- dealing with artificial intelligence and improving cyber security;
- recognizing the role of strategic infrastructure investments;
- mitigating the impacts of global crises on maritime connectivity; and
- engaging with emerging markets and developing countries.
Additionally, Minister Rodriguez highlighted the fourth-year anniversary of the downing of flight PS752 and reiterated the need to ensure the continued safety and security of international civil aviation passengers and crew with the Safer Skies Initiative, to enhance the level of safety and security for travellers in or near conflict zones, and to prevent future tragedies.
At a dedicated session on Ukraine with Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration and Minister for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine, Oleksandr Kubrakov, G7 Ministers expressed their concerns about the global impacts of Russia’s illegal and unjustifiable war of aggression, and discussed G7 coordination on reconstruction of transportation infrastructure to help the Ukrainian people. Minister Rodriguez reiterated Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine. Canada unequivocally condemns Russia’s ongoing war of aggression and is committed to Ukraine’s recovery. As a founding member of the Common Interest Group for Ukraine (CIG4U), facilitated by the International Transport Forum (ITF), Canada helps co-ordinate support for Ukraine’s immediate transport-related needs and long-term transport infrastructure plans.
This is also why Minister Rodriguez announced a new investment of $300,000 to the ITF, under the Clean Transportation System program, to help Ukraine’s greener reconstruction of passenger road and rail transportation systems. This funding is a natural expansion of Phase 1 announced in March 2023. Phase 2 will focus on passenger road and rail inter-city and international travel. This important work will speed up recovery, giving the people of Ukraine the modern, well-connected, and sustainable rail and road infrastructure they need to secure a prosperous future.
This G7 meeting also gave Minister Rodriguez the opportunity to lay the groundwork for Canada’s G7 presidency in 2025.
“The G7 Transport Ministers’ Meeting gives us an important opportunity to exchange ideas on increasing supply chain resiliency to build a stronger middle class and cleaner economy. Having a seat at these meetings is an opportunity to develop and strengthen these relationships, and to promote Canadian priorities to advance a strong transportation sector.” The Honourable Pablo Rodriguez Minister of Transport
Quick facts
The G7 members are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union.
Canada will assume the Presidency of the G7 in 2025.
