Ranking Methodology
Criteria & scoring.
To rank the adventure travel companies on our list we used 5 main criteria, as follows:
We researched the web traffic statistics as measured by SimilarWeb.com and social media audiences as measured by followers on Facebook and Instagram, and subscribers on Youtube. We created a popularity score for 1. Web Traffic and 2. Social Media presence on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 6. Weighting: 5%
Review Profile
We analysed the public review profiles of each of the travel companies focusing on the major independent 3rd party review platforms like Trustpilot, Tourradar, Stride, Tripadvisor, Feefo and Facebook. We divided our review score into two parts: 1. Size of Review Profile, and 2. Overall Quality of Reviews. Each part was scored on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 6. Weighting: 80%
Responsible Travel Practices
We reviewed each travel operator's website and read their statements about responsible travel / ethics / sustainability. We then scored each operator on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 3. Weighting: 5%
Awards and Accreditations
We explored each travel operator's website to uncover evidence of accreditations like ABTA, ATOL, ATTA and AITO (among others), and official awards / recognitions from the travel industry. We then scored each operator on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 3. Weighting: 5%
Breadth of Offering
We analysed the breadth and scale of each operator's tour offerings, focusing on the number of tours offered, countries covered and number of activities. We then scored each operator on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 3. Weighting: 5%
We recognise that smaller travel companies would struggle to compete on some of the criteria above.
For example, a small tour operator would most likely have significantly less web traffic and a smaller social presence than a big travel operator. Equally, they would likely have a smaller scale and breadth of offering.
To provide a level playing field, we therefore weighted our overall score heavily towards 3rd party reviews - a criteria that all operators can fairly compete on.
The total review score counts 80% towards the overall score, with the rest of the criteria accounting for 20%.
Table of Adventure Travel Company Data
Below is the raw data we captured for each adventure travel company during our analysis. Please note, metrics like traffic, social media followers and reviews are dynamic and change overtime. The data below is a snapshot of these metrics as of April / May 2019.
We will revise these numbers annually.

9 Best Travel Companies for Walking Tours and Hiking Tours in 2024
Enjoy some of the world's most beautiful landscapes at the speed of your own two feet..
Review: EF Go Ahead’s Food & Wine: Piedmont & Tuscany with America’s Test Kitchen
There’s something extra special about seeing someplace on foot the way you do on a walking tour, hiking tour, or guided trek. Maybe it’s the slower pace and the ability to actually admire sights you might just zip by in a car, bus, or train. Maybe it’s the easy opportunity for connections and conversations with local people. Or maybe it’s being out in the fresh air, enjoying and appreciating the natural setting of the location you’re visiting.
It’s probably some combination of all three that make walking tours, trekking tours, and hiking tours a popular way to travel. Whether you prefer an easygoing amble, a moderate hike, or a challenging summit, there are some great foot-fueled tours from hiking tour companies that explore famous locales and off-the-beaten-path spots all over the world. Here are my picks for the nine best travel companies offering walking tours and guided hiking trips.

Responsible Travel
We hold that ethical tourism can positively transform the world. It can support local communities, foster cultural interactions, and heighten social, ethical, and environmental awareness. Below are a few examples of why Backpacking Tours is a responsible, eco-friendly tour operator.
Local Tour Guides
Hiring local guides is both a legal requirement and a core principle of our responsible travel ethos. These guides, native to the areas we visit, offer unparalleled insights into local customs, history, and geography. Their deep-rooted knowledge enhances the tour experience in ways a foreign guide could not, adding a layer of authenticity that our travellers highly value.
Beyond enriching our tours, employing local guides has a direct, positive impact on the communities we visit. It provides employment opportunities and stimulates the local economy, aligning with our goal to offer mutually beneficial travel experiences. With local guides, you're not just a tourist; you're an engaged participant in sustainable tourism.
Elephant Sanctuary
During our "Backpacking Thailand" tour, a full-day visit to the Elephant sanctuary is a highlight that reflects our commitment to responsible travel. Here, elephants are no longer burdened by saddles or performance expectations; instead, they roam freely, foraging and enjoying their natural habitat. At Backpacking Tours, we offer our guests the opportunity to engage with these elephants respectfully and ethically. The funds generated from our visits are directly invested back into the well-being of these animals. This financial support aids in caring for and feeding the existing herd and enables the sanctuary to rescue and retire more elephants from less fortunate circumstances.
Local Schools
On Day 9 of our "Backpacking Thailand" tour, we have an enriching experience on the itinerary: visiting a local school. Importantly, each tour visits a different school, ensuring we spread our support across multiple communities. During these visits, we also donate to the school, which helps with educational supplies and resources.
The day's activities are not just about financial support; they're interactive and educational for all involved. We'll engage with the students, helping them with their English assignments and having conversations in English to improve their language skills. This not only aids the students academically but also provides our tourists with an invaluable cultural exchange experience.
Overall, these visits create a win-win scenario. The students receive practical help and inspiration, while our tourists walk away with a deeper understanding of the local culture and the satisfaction of making a positive impact.
Local Operators - Local Village in Hoi An
On Day 14 of our "Backpacking Vietnam" tour, we'll visit a village farm to learn about rural life and try to cook authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Fresh ingredients will come straight from the farm. This visit enriches your travel experience and directly benefits the local community.
This visit to a village farm serves a dual purpose. In addition to enriching your understanding of Vietnamese rural life, it also injects vital financial support into the community. By sourcing ingredients locally and participating in their daily activities, we contribute to the village's economic well-being.
Local Operators - Sigiriya Village
On the fourth day of our "Backpacking Sri Lanka" tour, we have a unique experience planned—a visit to a local village in Sigiriya. Not only does this excursion offer a unique and authentic glimpse into rural Sri Lankan life, but it also serves a purpose beyond tourism. You're directly contributing to the well-being and economic development of the local community, supporting the villagers in a meaningful way.

Description
Our Summer Rim to Rim Tour is a Grand Canyon legend and deservedly so! The ability to hike across the Canyon is what makes the Rim to Rim so special, as you have the unique opportunity to experience both rims and everything in between. The summer version runs from May 12 through September 15, and it’s important to be prepared (mentally and physically) to be potentially hiking in 105+ degree fahrenheit temperatures. If you’d prefer a Rim to Rim experience with cooler temperatures, check out our Autumn Rim to Rim or Winter Rim to Rim to Rim .
The Grand Canyon Rim to Rim hike begins on the cooler, shaded North Rim where we hike down the North Kaibab Trail. We then meet up with Bright Angel Creek and hike along its shores to Cottonwood Campground, a stunning desert oasis for our first night. Our second campsite is the famous Bright Angel Campground, and on the hike there we’ll traverse the amazing Bright Angel Box Canyon. During the evening of the second day, we’ll enjoy camping near Phantom Ranch and the Colorado River, before continuing our hike via the Bright Angel Trail to Havasupai Garden on the third day. We spend our last evening at the lush desert oasis of Havasupai Garden. We resume our hike and top out the fourth day at the South Rim, where a shuttle awaits us to complete our journey back to Flagstaff.
Important : It is strongly recommended to book your Grand Canyon backpacking trip 5 months in advance due to the Park’s permit system. Backpacking permits are issued on the first of the month 4+ months in advance (see deadlines for each month .) Permits for the most popular trips sell out very quickly during the initial lottery, so registering prior to the deadline of the month you’re interested in is highly beneficial. You can also pick any dates!

Permit deadlines.
Grand Canyon’s permit process is complicated, but we take care of everything so you don’t have to worry about it! Here’s what you do need to know – Grand Canyon issues backpacking permits through a lottery system 4+ months in advance ( deadlines listed below ). Permits for popular trips sell out immediately during the initial lottery, so it’s important to register before the process begins .
When you register we will ask you for backup dates and itineraries, as they are helpful if your first choice isn’t available. If a permit request is denied, pre-permit registrants have top priority for open spaces on confirmed permits, and very often get spots. Finally, we have good success rates, but your deposit is 100% refundable or transferable if we’re unsuccessful. Still have questions? Call us at 800-715-HIKE (4453)!

- Hiking Mileage: 6.8 miles
- Elevation Loss: 4,161 feet
We begin our Grand Canyon Rim to Rim backpacking trip at 8,000 feet and hike downhill approximately 7 miles to our first camp at Cottonwood Campground. This is a fantastic hike for the natural history buff as we descend through a dense mixed conifer forest on the North Rim to a semi-arid High Sonoran desert environment inside the Grand Canyon. Also en route we hike through the ominous and stunning Red Wall Limestone and past Roaring Springs – a cascading stream erupting from the side of an adjacent slope.
- Hiking Mileage: 7.2 miles
- Elevation Loss: 1,600 feet
On day two we’ll break camp and hike another 7 miles down to Bright Angel Campground. En route we traverse the amazing Bright Angel Box Canyon. With sheer granite and schist walls rising hundreds of feet above us, we hike along the crystal clear, spring-fed desert oasis of Bright Angel Creek. Our camp is located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon adjacent to the Colorado River and historic Phantom Ranch.
- Hiking Mileage: 4.5 miles
- Elevation Gain: 1,500 feet
After a hearty breakfast we’ll pack up and make an early departure to take advantage of the cool hiking hours of the morning. Hiking on the Bright Angel Trail along the Colorado and up Pipe Creek we’ll arrive at Garden Creek. From here we’ll hike upstream past its junction with Pipe Creek to Havasupai Garden – a spring site that watered seasonal Havasupai garden plots for centuries. From here it’s a short final hike to our camp for the night – Havasupai Garden Campground, another enchanting camp with shade and water.
- Hiking Mileage: 4.8 miles
- Elevation Gain: 3,000 feet
- Shuttle to Flagstaff: 1.5-hour drive from the South Rim
A casual morning breakfast will precede a beautiful hike out as we continue our ascent to the rim via the Bright Angel Trail. This trail is the most hiked in the Park because of its endless views, availability of water, and its steady grade taking us out of the Grand Canyon. It’s a finish to a hike you’ll never forget!

Groome Transportation operates an Arizona Shuttle that makes 9 dependable trips daily each direction between Phoenix and Flagstaff. The duration is 2.5-3 hours. Wonderful Time
Just finished the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim. This trip exceeded our expectations. Our group had a wonderful time and our guide Karla was excellent. Will definitely do another trip with Wildland in the future.
Max was awesome! He made what seemed like a daunting trip doable and helped us easily achieve our bucket list dream! The 4 day trek was great and allowed for time to rest and recharge plus enjoy the views around.
Highly Recommend
Everything about the trip exceeded my expectations! Leading up to the trip, Wildland Trekking had top-notch communication with us. Chris was an amazing guide. The perfect amount of leadership to keep us safe and on time, knowledge to educate us about the canyon, plant life, wildlife, and hiking in general, and friendly demeaner to immediately set a team/family tone within our group of complete strangers. His rustic cooking talent was over-the-top! I have absolutely NO COMPLAINTS about our trip, and highly recommend Wildland Trekking.

How a Colorado trooper saved a Dew Tour competitor off a gridlocked highway, helping him onto the podium
News News | Mar 16, 2024
Cody Jones
Responding to vehicular accidents during the winter season is a major part of the job while working for Colorado State Patrol. What troopers don’t expect, however, is to see a professional skier hiking his way through a crash scene while trying to get to Copper Mountain Resort for a competition, but that is exactly what happened on Saturday, March 9.
Colorado State Patrol Trooper Devin Sparks arrived that morning to the scene of a head-on collision between Copper and Leadville on Colorado Highway 91 and was in the process of documenting the crash and assisting the victims when he noticed a man with ski gear hiking his way north to Copper.
The skier was not an inexperienced, confused or lost. The man happened to be U.S. professional skier and three-time Olympic medalist Nick Goepper.
Goepper was stuck in traffic following the crash and was getting worried that he may not arrive to Copper in time in order to compete in the 2024 Dew Tour men’s superpipe final at 10:30 a.m.
“I immediately started my plan B and knew I needed to leave my car or I wasn’t going to make it to the mountain,” Goepper said of his thought process. “I realized I wasn’t going to make it with the traffic, so you gotta do what you gotta do.”
Support Local Journalism
Not wanting to risk how long it may take Sparks and the other Colorado State Patrol troopers to safely reopen the road, Goepper decided to ditch his truck on the shoulder, unload his ski gear and begin trekking down Highway 91 toward Copper in his black Vans and his Dew Tour start bib.
When Goepper eventually reached Sparks at the scene of the crash, the Summit County-based trooper told him to stop, causing Goepper to grow scared that he was going to get in trouble for disturbing the scene of the crash.
“He was walking through the crash scene on the inside shoulder, and as he walked past us I kind of asked him to stop,” Sparks said. “I told him to wait by my car and that I would give him a ride into Copper, knowing where he was going because of the bib he was wearing.”
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nick Goepper (@nickgoepper)
Goepper enthusiastically accepted Sparks’ offer for a ride down to Copper and promptly loaded himself into the patrol car with his Volkl halfpipe competition skis partially hanging out the driver’s side window.
Separated by the glass partition in the middle of the squad car, Sparks — who is originally from Indiana — soon realized he had a fellow Hoosier who also happens to be an accomplished skier in the back of his squad car.
“I recognized him as I got closer to him and talked to him because I am from Indiana,” Sparks said. “It just happened to be a pretty big coincidence.”
Goepper, who turned 30 on Thursday, grew up in Lawrenceburg, Indiana before going on to become a professional. He spent the first part of his professional career as a slopestyle skier, winning bronze in the event at the 2014 Olympics and silver at the 2018 and 2022 Olympics.
After three Olympic medals, Goepper decided to retire at the end of the 2022-23 season, citing burnout, but it was not long before Goepper was back on his skis chasing after more podium finishes.
At the end of 2023, Goepper made his debut in freestyle halfpipe, dropping into Copper’s superpipe and competing at the U.S. Grand Prix. In his first time competing in the event in years, Goepper placed fourth overall behind experienced halfpipe veterans Alex Ferreira of Aspen, Hunter Hess of Bend, Oregon, and Birk Irving of Winter Park.
Goepper continued to hone his craft in the superpipe throughout the season, earning third in Mammoth back in February, which was his highest finish in the halfpipe until arriving to Copper via squad car for the Dew Tour.
Despite all of the stress and unplanned events earlier in the morning, Goepper — clad in his signature competition blue jeans and bright red flames helmet — spun his way to second-place overall at the 2024 Dew Tour with a top run score of 91.
“Sometimes you have to get the job done no matter what,” Goepper said of his performance. “I was extremely thankful for the cops.”
With a second-place trophy in hand, Goepper was not only astonished to end his season with the highest finish of his rookie season in the halfpipe, but also extremely grateful for Sparks and his efforts to get him to the competition. As a gesture of his gratitude, Goepper went on to sign and send Sparks his starting bib alongside a handwritten note.
“It was that day that he helped make my dreams come true, and I wanted him to know how much it meant to me,” Goepper said.
“It was very shocking to receive it honestly because it was his highest place,” Sparks said of getting the bib. “It was a great honor to receive that for helping him out on the side of the road and doing my job.”
Although he is accustomed to having the occasional unusual encounter while out on patrol, the interaction with Goepper is one that Sparks will remember for a long time to come.
“It was just a great encounter,” Sparks said. “Very respectful guy — very nice, very kind, really down to earth. We had a great interaction, and to meet a pro skier from Indiana after growing up there was really a great coincidence on the side of the roadway on a work day.”

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
